So a couple days ago my account was hacked. Some thief stole around ~200 gold worth of stuff from my toons and pretty much had me questioning why continue to play this game if it’s that easy for someone to steal my account and my time.

Still, I thought that Arena Net would be able to restore my account and while I might lose a day or two of progress….perhaps even a week if I was unlucky…. that things would still work out.

Turns out that Arena Net has failed us all, however. The best they are current able to support, at least in my case, was a back up that would cause me to lose more than 2 MONTHS of progress, gold, items, etc which is almost as bad – and in some ways worse – than what the thief did.

Competing products like WoW can roll you back to within a last login/logout and the best that Arena Net can offer is to lose literally moths of progress? Am I crazy or does that seem completely unacceptable?

Could I get that ticket number? It would be extremely unusual for us to say, in response to a days’ old hack, that we need to pull a restoration from two months ago. I mean, I’ve never heard of such a thing! Ticket number, please.

Every time (except for this one) I’ve read about someone getting a rollback due to account compromise, the player always seemed happy with the time at which the account was rolled back. I’ve seen days mentioned as the time frame but never months.

Exactly! Thank you — that IS the norm. A few days is common. Sometimes even a day. But not months unless something really odd has happened with an individual account!

How many people honestly do not know they swore, insulted, or engaged in the use of bad language? Hi Dyze – Sounds like you’ve about run the gamut as far as troubleshooting this issue goes. At this time I would like you to delete the Temporary Cache for Guild Wars 2. Generally this is done to troubleshoot issues with the Black Lion Trading Post but I’ve seen this actually resolve black screen issues as well. To do this:

1. In Windows, press the “Start” button and locate the “Search programs and files” bar at the bottom of the start menu.

2. Type in the word “temp” with a percent sign in the beginning and the end of the word without any spaces.

3. Press “Enter” and a new window should appear with the location of “C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp”

4. Locate the folder labeled "gw2cache-{RANDOM NUMBERS} and delete it.

After doing this, please try running Guild Wars 2 again.

Josh is mixing up prestige with rarity. Prestigious items are of a certain quality, and say a certain thing about the person who wields them.

Well, I’m speaking colloquially here, because I’m not an expert nor a designer of virtual economies. I just find the subject interesting. In the real world you can buy all sorts of ‘prestigious’ things. Cars, homes, thousand dollar purses, etc. There are other things like prizes and metals you can win for feats of heroism or intellect or skill that you can not buy. It sounds like you want THOSE kinds of prestigious things. That’s cool.

You knew when you looked at a person the feats he had accomplished to get what he was wearing.

Ok. I acknowledge that is not what SAB skins are. So according to your definition of prestige, they are not prestigious. I’m ok with that. Regardless of my definition or your definition, a lot of people get happy feelings from them. THAT is really all I personally care about. Not the nomenclature.

One of the things I really hate in MMOs is looking at items that no matter what I do, I will never be able to get them again.

Hm. I suppose I view it like real life. I see cars and houses and cool leather jackets etc. that I can never have. I’ve learned to accept that. I suppose it’s a certain expectation one brings into a game that will determine how they feel about this issue.

It baffles me that this idea of prestige has more value to developers than allowing players more robust character customisation options.

Well we succeed or fail based on pleasing our player base. WE aren’t the ones value the idea of prestige. It’s the human brain that values the idea of prestige. (at least in the aggregate.) And 98% of our players are human, so we kinda have to work within that framework as far as I can tell.

Questions:
1. You said that the other super skins will be added at a later date. But you also said that next time there will be probably a whole new set of SAB skins. So will we have the missing Super skins and the new set next time? Will the new set also have the weapons that were missing this time? Or will we only have a completely new set next time, without any of the missing Super skins?

2. Are you planning on limiting the farming? With the team points? If so, will you increase the drop chance or make the drop chance increase with the team score? Cause completing the whole dungeon as good as possible, with a drop chest of 1 skin in 50 chests will make the new skins extremly rare.
Especially if they can also drop the missing super skins, since that would increase the Itempool way higher than the current SAB chest pool is.

1. We did about half the weapon set with W1. We’ll do the other half with W2.
2. We haven’t hashed out any of the details about that yet. Our team is currently spread around other teams for a bit before we get back onto SAB. (Several of us are working on game wide bugs.) I personally want to tie points into drop rate, but we will have to weigh all the pros and cons of whatever system we go with.

Hi hitsugaya,

I would like to rule out the possibility that there is another program interfering with the game connection. To do this, we use a Windows command called “MSCONFIG.”

Please note, this command will not uninstall any applications from your computer. All MSCONFIG does is prevent these applications from automatically starting when Windows boots up.

To do this:

1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.

2. Type “MSCONFIG” without the quotes, and click “OK.” This should open the System Configuration Utility.

3. Click on the “Services” tab and check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” check box near the bottom, then click the “Disable All” button. (You MUST click “Hide all Microsoft Services”)

4. Next go to the “Startup” tab and click the “Disable All” button.

5. Once these items are all disabled, click the “OK” button and you will get a prompt to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

6. Once you return to Windows, please try connecting to the game again.

To reverse these settings, simply run MSCONFIG again and click “Normal Startup” on the first window labeled “General.”

Note: If you need a specific application to run with Windows but still want to use MSCONFIG, just follow the above instructions and on step 4, re-check any application you feel needs to start with Windows. Examples would be wireless connection software, mouse or keyboard applications or even security applications. Please note that security applications can often be a contributing factor to such issues. If you haven’t done so already, please also disable any Anti-virus, Firewall or other security applications for testing purposes. While we do not recommend running your machine without a security application, should disabling the software help resolve your issue we can reinstall it and work to configure the application so it doesn’t cause this issue.

This is correct. If someone on Anvil Rock hosts a custom arena, it will display for everyone.

It’s not a literal item. There were some issues with players dropping/losing the scabbard, so it was changed to a “virtual item”. Interacting with it so it disappears is enough to allow you to exit.

I think that being special is an inherent quality to the item and has nothing to do with it being limited.

I like to pretend that I’m a purist like this. But then I think about my Dinotopia book and Virgin Black poster that are signed by the artists. The signature adds nothing significant aesthetically to the items, but I value them more as a result. I also have my original Jetfire Transformer from when I was a kid, and the fact that they aren’t made any more does seem to imbue that hunk of metal (back then they used METAL in toys!) and plastic with more value. People will pay more for an old broken down ‘67 Mustang than than a new car. I think that ’being special’ is indeed an inherent quality, but that PART of the inherent quality is its context in the world. A ’67 Mustang is inherently more valuable because it is scarce, like my Transformer and Virgin Black poster.

Or perhaps we’re looking at it the wrong way. Maybe the premise that ‘inherent value’ is a tenable concept is wrong. After all, value is a human-derived concept. ‘Things’ are just different combinations of chemicals after all. Nothing HAS value in and of itself. So if we can agree that value is composed of -and for- humans, and only perceived by them, than the full gamut of human psychology must inform that valuation. And having something that others do not is, like it or not, an unavoidable component of human psychology. It may be a part that the more self-examining among us tend to loathe, and would like to grow out of. But it’s there none-the-less. The impulse to escape it is perhaps the impulse behind asceticism? I don’t know. It’s interesting to ponder.

It’s like a concert t-shirt. It’s proof you were there. This can be seen negatively (ie, it’s cool because you don’t have it) or positively (it’s cool because it shows I was there). I think the later is what Anet is shooting for.

I can’t speak for the people who design and maintain our economy, but I know they aren’t elitists, and they are honestly trying to create the most positive experience for the most people possible. I really like this analogy, and I take some amount of pleasure from having limited edition concert tshirts because it is a small way of recording a small part of my life experiences. I would hope that in 3 years, some guy with his SAB scepter is feeling that way about it.

That’s a perfectly valid perception. But as stated above, I think value is derived from personal opinion, not intrinsic or inherent attributes. I’m sure my signed Virgin Black poster is worthless to you, but that doesn’t make it worth less to me.

@Deified – I’m so glad you linked that post. I was getting ready to go digging around in the forums for that. To boost these difficult events, is a great step in the direction of spreading people out into the world.

We’re working on trying to make the ones we’ve already got more exciting encounters, so I can’t promise we’ll change any of the ones on that list immediately unless they are involved enough already to warrant it. We’ll make sure to scrub the list and add them to our polish/clean-up list where it makes sense as well.

As for the late reply, I’ve been in China and missed the earlier thread, but thank you very much for linking it! Better late than never, blame it on the Great Wall, it’s terribly distracting.

Hi Inculpatus cedo – Thanks for pointing this out to me because I had no idea the percent signs were being omitted! I’ll have to re-word this step for future posts to avoid any confusion in the future.

@ Nighthawk – There’s a few different things that you can try as BLT issues tend to have a variety of resolutions to the same issue. If deleting the Gw2cache folder doesn’t resolve the issue for you, this may be caused by outdated Root Certificates on your machine. In an effort to update these I would like for you to follow the steps below:

1. Close out of Guild Wars 2 if you have it running and go to your Documents folder. In the Guild Wars 2 folder you should have a file called Local.dat, delete this file.

2. Download the program from the link below:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe

3. Run the program. You will probably have to click ‘run’ or ‘allow’ a couple times, but after that, nothing will appear.

If you run the program and nothing happens that’s ok, it is as it should be.

4. Open the Game Client and try to access the trading post.

All thats going to do is feed the elitest mentalities, which is not good for any game.

Perhaps you are conflating two things into one. Do you think that elitist attitudes are the same thing as whatever it is that drives the desire to have prestige gear? Do you think one causes the other? Or are they only sometimes correlative? I don’t have any final answers to these questions. Like I said, personally I don’t find a lot of satisfaction in prestige gear. But I understand why it exists. And I’m not convinced that it’s unhealthy for a community like you are.

Hey guys,

I just want to mention that we have attempted to design this dungeon in a manner that, in a way, makes it very difficult to skip much of anything. We have done extensive internal testing and the general consensus is that trying to skip most of the content ends up being more trouble than it is worth, and the fastest way through is essentially to play through the content as intended.

I know that there will still be doubters, but hopefully the work we have put in towards this goal will contribute to providing the story experience you are hoping for.

You can limit items by making the amount of time/resources required to get them very large, or you can limit them having them in for a limited time only. We could make every item easy to attain and permanently available, but then we lose the prestige factor. If you don’t value the prestige factor, then no arguments are going to make you understand. It would be like arguing someone into liking heavy metal or kimchi. Personally, I don’t particularly value the prestige factor, but I understand that it is a HUGE motivating force that drives the engine of the economy.

In the case that AC was made harder, that’s a matter of opinion. Having personally reduced numbers like HP and damage, and modifying the skills used to not do more devastating things, I know for certain that it is numerically easier than it was before, and more forgiving to mistakes.
However we increased team based difficulty. We designed things to require players to coordinate and work together more than before, since that is our original goal: To create challenging content build for 5 coordinated players. This is why we’re not allowing it to scale like the rest of the game does. It’s set and built for 5, so it doesn’t need scaling.

You are allowed to upgrade your account. As the Collector’s Edition is just a DDE version with non-virtual goodies, I don’t see why not. But, to be sure, create a ticket and ask support. Then, you will be sure.

Yeah, this. We will re-balance our reward structure for the next release so hopefully we don’t have a situation where people are doing ‘work’ to get something they want. I know the problem is impossible to solve completely, and there is some sort of side-door enjoyment SOME people derive from grinding a path over and over in pursuit of a distant reward. But it’s not our vision for SAB.

Hi michaelspotti,
I would like to rule out the possibility that there is another program interfering with the game connection. To do this, we use a Windows command called “MSCONFIG.”

Please note, this command will not uninstall any applications from your computer. All MSCONFIG does is prevent these applications from automatically starting when Windows boots up.

To do this:

1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.

2. Type “MSCONFIG” without the quotes, and click “OK.” This should open the System Configuration Utility.

3. Click on the “Services” tab and check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” check box near the bottom, then click the “Disable All” button. (You MUST click “Hide all Microsoft Services”)

4. Next go to the “Startup” tab and click the “Disable All” button.

5. Once these items are all disabled, click the “OK” button and you will get a prompt to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

6. Once you return to Windows, please try connecting to the game again.

To reverse these settings, simply run MSCONFIG again and click “Normal Startup” on the first window labeled “General.”

Note: If you need a specific application to run with Windows but still want to use MSCONFIG, just follow the above instructions and on step 4, re-check any application you feel needs to start with Windows. Examples would be wireless connection software, mouse or keyboard applications or even security applications. Please note that security applications can often be a contributing factor to such issues. If you haven’t done so already, please also disable any Anti-virus, Firewall or other security applications for testing purposes. While we do not recommend running your machine without a security application, should disabling the software help resolve your issue we can reinstall it and work to configure the application so it doesn’t cause this issue.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue for you, could you please attach a crashlog to the thread? You can find this by navigating to Documents\Guild Wars 2 and it will be the ArenaNet.log file.

Dear Arena Net,

I attempted to log into my account yesterday and it wasn’t letting me in. I registered a support ticket once I found there was no real time support. I wasn’t overly happy that there was no phone or even live/chat support that allowed me to either talk with a service rep,. however, I thought I’d give your system a shot and see how your reps responded. Within a couple hours I had a link sent to me that allowed me to reset my password and get back my account so all things considered I was mostly pleased despite no real time support exists.

However, once I logged into my account, I found that some thief had stolen everything I had (gold/mats/et al) from all my toons which represented hundreds of gold loss. I reported this to Arena Net in my ticket so they could roll my account back and allow me to get back to playing the game. So far, so good at that point. However, since I have reported that my account was hacked and stolen, I have not even received a reply(from a person), much less a resolution to the problem and we’re at 24 hours of not being able to use the product I paid for.

I began to wonder what the delay was in getting me back into the game and after doing some reading on the forums I found that this may take ANet days or for some weeks to correct while I essentially can’t play the game which I find wholly and completely unacceptable for a company of Arena Net’s size.

I write software for a living, like yourselves, and we have client service reps who can’t always respond in real time but get placed in a queue and get service as soon as possible. That being said, if we took days or weeks to respond client’s being essentially down we’d out of business in a week. There’s a line of what should be acceptable levels of service to your customers when they’re down and what’s not and I strongly feel like not resolving serious issues that basically prohibit me from playing for days or longer is well beyond that line.

So, I sincerely doubt that this will merit any sort of response from anyone, but I’m very frustrated at the experience and the apparent lack of ANet in getting me back into the game in any sort of reasonable time frame and needed to express these frustrations where hopefully someone will consider the position they’re putting their “current” customers in.

Account compromise issues are delicate. And as you have been informed, your account was compromised, and not through ArenaNet or NCSOFT. Someone apparently gained your credentials through an external source and accessed your account. They also used the account for gold sales, so there was an overlap of account actions, but the account is secured now.

This did not take, as you rather dramatically said, “days or weeks to respond.” The entire process took less than one- day. In that time, the compromise was identified, and then the account was locked, the appeal was reviewed, and access was reinstated to you. That is, to my mind’s eye and that of most players, an entirely “reasonable time frame.”
