Yes, it is just about glory.

2) Does rank even matter? I’ve killed lots in the 50+ and they call me a noob because I destroyed them.

Not really, as you can farm them easily in Hotjoin.

3) How do you get like full Arah armor and stuff in Spvp? Tournaments?

Armor in PvP is just cosmetic. You get new armor sets by increasing your rank (every 10 ranks) or winning Tournaments.

4) How is a ranger able to use a stealth skill and use fear when they’re downed. Are consumables REALLY allowed in Spvp, where everything is suppose to be perfectly balanced? I don’t get feared by rangers while they’re downed in WvW….

May have been the pet, they can still controll them while they are down I think. Never played ranger though.

5) Why does it seem like the teams are always improperly balanced? I played about 10 matches today. Only 10 of them were within 100 points of each other.

Join Tournaments, they have Matchmaking since the last patch. Hotjoin is never balanced.

6) Why are people so dumb in Spvp? The noobs really ruin the fun. There aren’t much problems in Spvp but there are just too many bad people that make it so the 500-80 matches happen. I can understand if you’re trying a new class, but classes like warrior aren’t really that hard to figure out…

Again, play tournaments, preferably with a premade team. Hotjoin doesn’t matter at all.

I don’t get this, why does everybody hate the Elementalist? Every other class can also use their weapons movementskills while carrying the orb, I personally find especially Rangers a lot more annoying since they also can evade all the time, it is much harder to catch a ranger carrying the orb than it is catching an ele.

Frees were just awesome to test and practice new builds before taking them into paid. Please make Frees 1 team vs. 1 team too, so we do not have wait 30 Minutes for that.

You talk about ‘upstate’ and ‘downstate skill’ all the time, but it seems to me YOU are missing the point here. To prevent others from stomping/AOEing or whatever your downed teammates you HAVE to use your ‘upstate’ skills in a strategic matter and not just spam them mindlessly around while everybody is in ‘upstate’. If someone starts to AOE your downed buddy why not just CC the spammer? If you just press your rezz-button mindlessly a good enemy team will just crush all of you, downed guy included.

I have to admit though that this may be hard to grasp for new players but once you get used to this it adds a lot of strategic depth to the game. Personally I do not like games which are to easy to get good at just by practicing your personal skill a lot. Making strategic decisions as team instead of just spamming all my damage into sombody else’s face until he is dead is what makes this game very appealing to me and many others I know. Take this away and you will loose lots of good players (I mean the really good ones to which I do not count myself) who are actually carrying the PvP at the moment.

I simply do not share your opinion and wanted to represent the part of the playerbase feeling this way here. Downstate probably will never change the way you are suggesting, so the solution is as simple as to explain to new people how important the downstate management is for winning, at least at higher skill levels. You have been able to figure this out after a few days of playing but you are obviously not liking it.

You think it is dumb, I like it a lot. All we can do is agree to disagree.

That is a pointless quote since individual player skill has nothing to do with an overpowered/underpowered game mechanic. You cant tell one way or the other whether it is the player’s fault or the game’s fault based solely on player input. You need to do some objective reasoning to find the answer.

A lot of people like to l2p spam without really taking the time to objectively consider if that mechanic is overpowered or not. Its far easier to just ignore the issue and assume someone is bad than to devote brain power to figuring out how to fix it.

I am not sure in which way the stomp mechanic is overpowered? Seems to me it is just the same for both sides though the team accepting it exists and acting accordingly wins.

I DO love downstate. It adds another layer of strategy to teamplay which I like a lot. As was already said before, there are lots of ways to prevent people from rezzing their mates or getting a stomp. Managing downstate is exactly what makes the difference between good and bad teams. You call the one the better player who bursts the health away faster, but if the enemy team focusses on getting bursted people back up, aren’t they the better players because they made you waste your cooldowns for a useless burst? I honestly think so. It is a valid strategy, obviously it is at least a valid counter to your strategy.

This is a teamgame. If you want to pwn people on your own and feel like the big hero go elsewhere. As easy as that. You can not win every fight. If you do not adapt to basic game mechanics, than this is not the game for you.

Finally I’d like to quote something for you to think about (do not remember where it comes from):

In my humble opinion nothing is wrong with portal at all. Playing as a point defender without portal is pretty boring. You can never leave the point and the enemy probably won’t attack it, because if you are not a mesmer and defending close point you are probably very tanky. So you are just standing there and nothing is gonna happen all game. As a bunker guard in mid that’s not the case, because there will always be fights in mid. So who would want to play a close point defender without portal? Another point is portals beeing used offensively, which makes a game much more interesting because it makes room for unexpected things to happen.

I think giving portal to other professions would solve multiple problems at once. The common tactic right now in paids is to send an bunker or semi-bunker ele to kill the mesmer. If some other profession which is not as easy to kill would take the mesmers role, the much complained about bunker-ele tactic would be rendered useless. If multiple professions can do portal you can never be sure which one is coming back and that’s a good thing in my opinion.

I agree with Follidus that mesmer is not mandatory but it is much easier. Hence as a new team you would probably just take the mesmer because otherwise you couldn’t stand a chance against the established teams. For new paid teams a mesmer seems mandatory because they are maybe not good enough yet to play without one. Most of the time the problem of new teams (like mine) is getting used to each other and play together well. It is not that important which classes or builds you are using once you got your synergy as team to work. To get that to work the obvious choice is to take setup that is not too hard to play, like e.g. using a portal mesmer to defend your close point.

I am excited about the upcoming patches. :-)

Not what I said. I’m quite ok with everyone having equal gear.

Give me a set of gear on my character that I can equip to PvP with and I’d be fine with it.

I actually like the seperation. PvE bores me to hell and having to farm PvE to get proper gear for PvP would repell me from any game. I hated that so much. Just because some kiddies have all day to farm stuff would mean they could kick my kitten no matter who is the better player. I do like the competetive aspect a lot, being able to take your PvE gear to PvP would ruin this.

If you would like to have nicer looking gear, do more PvP and the higher your rank the better the gear looks you can acquire.

I did not say it is useless. If the Thief is visible and casting a 1s skill he will probably aplly his Basilisk Venom, you can watch out for that and just dodge afterwards so he will miss his steal. If the steal already hit you, just use stun breaker/mist form/plague form/whatever to go out of the way and after that he can’t do kitten for 40 seconds. In a team fight this renders him basically useless for that time. Any good team just focuses the thief whenever he appears and if the target mitigates his combo somehow he is either dead or useless for 40 seconds. So tell me, what is so difficult here?

No idea if it is me you are referring to, but if it is, then you didn’t read my post properly.
And … most of us DO have a thief (and have had for a while now) and play it quite often to get good at it. You can counter-argue: Isn’t it a l2p-issue if you can’t land the combo? I can give an example: I fought someone at the gates on my necro with 2.5k-2.6k armor yesterday (yeah, I know .. should be using another build with even less armor, but whatever). After downing him I was down to 50% hp … out of the gate came a thief and did steal+bs … bam 9.5k hp gone and instead of stomping the guy I fought, I got stomped … I had 0 chance to counter that. I am used to this happening, and I have learned from this … but I don’t think it is intelligent design to allow this.

Still .. it is imo nothing compared to the cheesiness of CnD and infinite stealthing.

So, you already have beaten one enemy, used your cool downs, half your HP was gone and you expect to win vs. another one just entering the fight? I bet any other decent player no matter of what profession he played would have beaten you in this situation. The loose was just situational not thief specific in my opinion.

Change ONE number somewhere (hopefully you did your refactoring properly so it really comes down to this) and the queues won’t stop popping.

Maybe you could reconsider the rewards of free tournaments also, give two Tickets to the winner, and one to 2nd place.

What you should do is telling us what exactly you are working on at the moment, because without this information many people feel like nothing is happening at all. A simple “We are implementing matchmaking right now.” is way better than a “Stay tuned, there will me more soon.”.

Also, if you let me I will copy a post I made mathematically showing why paids dont pop. My apologies to anyone that has already read it. You can skip the following text:

8 teams join a paid tournament. Each team is made of 5 people who spend 5 tickets each.
8 teams * 5 members * 5 tickets/member = 200 tickets spent.
- One team will end 1st. That’s 120 gems each. 120*5 = 600 gems
- One team will end 2nd. That’s 80 gems each. 80*5 = 400 gems.
- Two teams will end 3rd/4rth. That’s 20 gems each. 20*(5+5)=200 gems.
- Some gems are given as lottery prize, however no one knows the exact % and it seems very random. My experience says you will get about 20-40 gems every 3 or 4 tournaments.
Total gems given as reward = 1200 gems + (low, random amount).
Conclusions:
- With 1200 gems a total of 100 tickets can be bought
maths: 1200 gems/ 360 priceof30tickets = 3,33 stacks of 30. 3,33*30 = 100 tickets.
- 200 tickets were spent to join a tournament, and only 100 were returned back. Also, a 83,3% of the tickets are given to the top/most experienced teams. The other teams are left with 16,7 tickets and that means 0,556 tickets per player.
(considering top teams the ones getting 1st and 2nd positions)
- Only 2 teams out of 8 can play paid tournaments continously. That means the 6 worse teams will have to farm 4 (2 teams) or 5 (6 teams) free tournaments to play a single paid. The average is 4,75 free tournaments to farm.
Considering each free tournament takes 45 minutes, and considering you win 100% of free tournaments (which is not mathematically true) we can calculate the amount of time an average team has to spend to play 1 paid tournament.
4,75*45 minutes = 213,75 minutes = 3,56 hours. Since i didnt count the daily ticket (yay!) we could say the time spent is from 3 to 3,5 hours.
- 75% of the teams (6/8) have to farm 3 hours to play a single paid tournament. Also, 4/8 of them (50%) can only play a single round. A single round takes 10-15 minutes.
That means 50% of the teams aiming competitive pvp in gw2 have to farm 3 hours to play 12,5 minutes of competitive pvp. Another 25% of teams (which are better) are rewarded with 25 minutes of competitive pvp every 3+ hours.
T1 teams = best teams
T2 teams = good teams
T3 teams = worst/new/50% teams
- T1 teams (that are already better) can practice paid tournaments 100% of their time.
- T2 teams (that win T3 teams but get farmed by T1) can practice paid tourments 13,8% of their time
- T3 teams (people wanting to start at competitive pvp) can practice 6,94% of their time.
—> T2 & T3 teams quit pvp or play free tournaments 86-93% of their time . Since free tournaments are pug stomping they will hardly get better.
—> T1 teams are getting better and better, while T2 and T3 teams improve very slowly
—> Only T1 teams queue paids. Since the gem rewards remain the same (even if the teams playing paid are really good), we have 3 new tiers: T1.1, T1.2, T1.3

AMAZING FACTS WE REALIZED
200 tickets are spent to join a tournament and only 100 are given back. Anet gets 50% of the entry. That’s too high. To give you an example, a casino holding a poker tournament only claims 10% of the entry price.

83% of the prize is given to the top teams
Good, average & bad teams get 0,556 tickets per player
Only best teams can practice full time.
Good, average and bad teams can practice 6,94% or 13,8% of their time
Less people is encouraged to queue, but the amount of people to make a paid pop is quite high 8*5 = 40
If you have a life and decide to spend your money, you will have to pay 10€ for 800 gems. That’s 10€ for 66,6 tickets. Considering you an average team, you will get 0,5 tickets/paid tournament. Since you will play 13 tournaments with initial tickets you will gain 0,5*13=6,5 tickets, which means an extra game. You paid 10€ to play 13+1=14 tournaments, averaging 15-30 minutes of gameplay each tournament
—> you paid 10€ to play 210-420 minutes depending on your skill.
- To practice, a new team has two options:
*> play 10 hours for every hour a top one does. If a top teams plays 4 hours every day, a new team has to play 40 hours/day.
*> pay 10€ every 3,5 hours (if they are “bad”), pay 10€ every 7 hours (if they are “better”)
This awesome system we have makes queues longer, and that means T1, T2 and T3 teams can practice even less % of their time than was calculated.

My team would definitely play more paid if it would be like that. We are stomping 95% of the teams in free tournament, but have not passed 2nd round in paid for a long time. Most of the time we are playing against teams who are much worse than us or much better, so not much to learn there. Encouraging more teams to play paid may be a solution to this problem. When the risk is not that high people might also join paids with their B-team if the A-team isn’t complete.

I would suggest the steady weapons from the pvp vendor to perform the tests on a dummy in the mists. They do the exact same damage with every hit, so you do not have to average multiple attacks and hence get a more accurate measure.

I did some intensive testing by now and can confirm Comaetilico’s answer. The 10% damage bonus does not count as attunement bonus. Seems a little weird to me, I would say this is a bug.

Hey there,

the Arcane 15 trait Lingering Elements makes attument bonuses linger for 5 seconds. When I am e.g. traiting Air X (Air Training, 10% more dmg while attuned to Air), does this count as attunement bonus and hence will last for 5 seconds on the attunement I change to next?

As a programmer I do understand indeterministic bugs are really a pain in the kitten which need a lot of effort to be reproduced and tracked down. But this one is really annoying for the players as it ruins lots of matches. And it just seems to happen to our team, never the enemies. :P

Please fix it. So far I could not figure out any correlation but I will look out for the thief-thing, as so many people mentioned it.

This obviously is a learn to play issue.

You didn’t say what class you were playing and I’m seriously considering making up a scenario that fits your attitude but I will refrain from suggesting that you got too comfortable abusing mace 3 on your guardian in a long drawn out story.

Block-Bug has been fixed with the last patch, no more 5s blockings for guardians.

I do not like that either. As a student I choose GW2 because it does not have any monthly fees. Though supporting such a nice game with a few euros would be not that bad. But the price is just to high. 1 Euro for 5 Tickets? Seriously? That’s just to much money for that. The entry fee for paids should be lowered to 1-2 Tickets, then people would consider buying them instead of stomping PUGs in Free Tourneys.

2) after matchmaking is in place we can think Ladder and how to show ladder on website (stop posting QP jokes.. please.. real ladder based on ELO)

this two points will actually make sure people stop leaving and probably players will start care ! Also the game will be sooo sooo different when you have chance to play “good games” against opponenst of same skill..

3) any other activity including custom arenas, new modes, new maps, dueling options, balance issues, bug fixes, any e-sport tournaments, spectator mode etc. etc..

point 3 here make only sense if previous two are working.. .. if point 3 is implemented without poin 1 and 2 in place, then .. i just dont care because it will not help, maybe it could be nice and fresh for first 14 days.. but then we go back to basic ! and thats – where is matchmaking? where is ladder?

This is very true. I tried League of Legends yesterday as it seems to be the current BIG THING. All I can say is that is BORING. It bored the hell out of me after a few matches.
