Phoenix is far more difficult to land than grenades. Do you really believe that landing grenades is harder than ele staff AoE at those ranges?

I’m going to choose to believe that you’re just ignorant, so I will educate you.

Phoenix moves slower than grenades or even a player with swiftness. It has to be placed perfectly so that the actual phoenix passes through the target, explodes and then returns through the target or it’s damage is cut in half. Literally no intelligent person would say that grenades are more difficult to land than phoenix, unless they had no idea how the skills function.

As far as staff, eruption has a long cast time and a long delay after casting where the effect is visible on the ground with a giant red ring that warns players to move away.

Ice spike is similar. Not only do these two skills take longer to cast and have a longer delay before effect than grenades, but they’re massively telegraphed.

Gust and shockwave aren’t difficult to land on moving targets at medium+ range, they’re pretty much impossible. In order to have any chance of hitting a target moving laterally, you have to deselect them and manually aim the skills using your camera. The odds of that working are pretty much Jack and kitten, and Jack left town.

Did you make your Ele at the start of the game or recently?
Because for the first several months Ele’s were VERY strong, basically a top-tier PvP class. A well-played D/D Ele was almost unstoppable due to crazy sustain/healing, high mobility and decent damage output.

Not really. Bunker ele was basically unkillable at the beggining of the game, but only because of how many escapes it had combined with good mobility. Ele was a mediocre point holder and could be forced to run from most classes. An ele who stuck around too long would run out of escapes, get hit with CC and just instantly die. They could never kill decent players because the damage was just laughably bad. A bunker ele’s fire grab did less damage than a balanced ele’s lightning whip.

Everything other than pure bunker was below average or flat out bad.

Boon duration hasn’t been really strong since it stopped affecting aura duration and ANet went overboard with the anti-boon nerfs/counters.

It can be ok for soloing if it helps you maintain higher might stacks and fury up time, but in a group, you should always be at or near 25 with perma fury, so the 165 power and #6 rune set ability is going to be much more valuable.

What? How is thief a faceroll class?

How is Necro harder than engi? No skillshots? You call those cap-point-size marks a SKILLSHOT? Engi’s don’t have to keep track of cooldowns on weapon swap? Yeah they don’t, they have to keep track of cooldowns on kit-swap, which implies a much larger number of skills’ cooldown to track.

Basically everything you said is bullkitten.

How is thief not faceroll? I didn’t call anything on necro a skillshot and I said they were about the same with maybe necro being slightly harder because it has to manage weapon swap and deathshroud cooldowns instead of being able to pull out any tool it needs at any time. Kit swap has a 1 second cooldown, I’m not sure how effort you need to put into tracking that, but if you think thief isn’t faceroll, I’ll go ahead and assume a lot.

In my opinion, given my experience on all other classes as well, engi is the hardest to play optimally simply because of grenades being the hardest skillshot to land. This isn’t even debatable. If you disagree then I SERIOUSLY suggest that you go play a nade engi for a decent amount of time and then compare it to any other skillshot in this game. Grenades are a HUGE part of engi play in TPvP and are the most frequently used skillshot amongst any class. 1v1s are won by vast margins and lost in embarrassing fashion by grenade aim alone. If I miss all of my grenades I’m liable to turn around and start running.

Phoenix is far more difficult to land than grenades. It has to be timed and positioned perfectly or it’s damage gets cut in half or misses all together.

As far as grenades being hard to land, I disagree in pretty much any sPvP scenario. It’s almost impossible to miss a 150 radius AoE when fighting on point. If you’re trying to land them at long range, you have to compare the difficulty to other long range skills. Do you really believe that landing grenades is harder than ele staff AoE at those ranges?

More Counter Stealth Play

Stealth should work like it does in basically every other genre but for some reason MMO devs just crap all over themselves and can’t understand basic game design.

It’s not complicated:
Stealthed characters are invisible while stationary
Moving gives them either increasing levels of transparency based on speed and distance or the tried and true Predator cloaking effect.

If you’re aware of their presence, you can look for the cloaked character and spot them. It then becomes a game of the stealthed character trying to keep his presence secret for as long as possible to maximize the effectiveness of invisibility.

This simple, effective system has worked in basically every other genre, but MMO devs just can’t seem to figure it out.

It worked in AvP
It worked in Tribes

I can’t think of a single game that this simple system was used and it didn’t work perfectly.

WvW is such a diverse game mode that there isn’t one master class.

Warrior is probably the best all around if you want to zerg, GvG, duel and roam, but it’s not the best at any of them.

If all you care about is roaming, thief is your go to class.

If you just want to duel, mesmer, guardian, engi are the best (pretty much in that order).

Zerging and GvG don’t have a universal ‘best’ because of how diverse tactics can be in larger groups. One comp might make zele/zecro shine where they’re rally bait in others.

im not sure how u think thiefs are more braindead than necros? MM is pretty much one of the most braindead speccs around just sayin.

You can say that about any pet build, which I kind of figured was assumed. You didn’t see phantasm mesmer up there either.

HGH wich require alot of micro and reflexes/aiming.

HGH was never a build that took much skill. Teldo reffered to it -a-—-****—-s- —-—-**-s-o- brain dead and boring that it made him not want to play the game.

It’s in the middle. It’s not a complete faceroll class like ranger, thief and hammer warrior, but it doesn’t take much skill to play effectively. No real skillshots and mostly just spams things off cooldown. I would put it about the same as necro. Maybe a little easier because you don’t have to keep track of cooldowns on weapon swap and death shroud.

Can you please go back to the warrior forums ? If you don’t know what you’re talking about you have no business here.

If you can’t beat the average fotm summer-time Warrior on a D/D or S/D Ele you are complete and utter trash and should uninstall. A high-level Warrior should give you a run for your money but you should still be able to maintain a fairly even win-loss ratio against them.

In a Warrior/Ele fight it’s all about who makes more mistakes in a row. Both classes have the ability to recover from what should be fatal mistakes, both classes have the ability to kite and control, both classes have the ability to heal to full when they aren’t pressured. Warriors and Ele’s are like peas in a pod.

If you’re losing to eles on a warrior, it’s an L2P issue. You are bad and you should feel bad.

Warrior has more armor, health and healing when both are specced similarly. His cooldowns on powerful skills are less than half of comparable ele abilities. To say that the matchup is even and comes down to who makes more mistakes is just ignorant.

The warrior has a massive margin for error against ele, because he can use invulns and CC (doesn’t matter if they land or get dodged, you’re stopping incoming damage either way) and just regen all of the damage that you face tanked. Ele has to stop attacking to heal, during which time the warrior is also healing while attacking the ele.

The two classes are not even. They’re not close in terms of power or skill required to play.

Go back to the warrior forums and stop embarrassing yourself here.

Passive builds shouldn't be banned

The burst meta relied of faceroll easymode builds too. Thief burst was described by top thief players like Lowell as “drop mouse, punch keyboard.”

By skillshots, I mean like phoenix. The skill has a moderate-long cooldown and missing with the direct hits cuts your damage in half. That’s how all powerful abilities should be. The easier it is to land, the weaker it needs to be. Yet we have skills like backstab and eviscerate that deal almost as much damage and whether they hit or not is 99% on the opponent’s reaction instead of the skill of the attacker. Attacks don’t even have to be massive damage to be devastating. Stuns, immob, long chills, etc. can have a huge impact on fights and should be much harder to land than they are.

An engi can get away with just vomiting nades and farting bombs all over the point and he’s either going to force you off point for the cap or kill you for staying on point. None of his attacks are skill shots and it doesn’t really matter to him if he misses quite a few of his skills, because he can just spam more that are pretty much just as good by swapping to another kit. Necro is essentially the same way. There’s not a big gap between a competent player and a good player on engi/necro and most of the difference is in their ability to avoid attacks instead of the ability to land their attacks.

Instant burst is cheese, but ele is still not viable in any competitive PvP.

It’s not impossible to dodge though. 99% of the time, the ele is going to start by unleashing hurl (the rocks floating above him start flying at you), earthquake (he jumps in the air with streams of dust and rock flying around him) and then lightning flashes to his target. You have almost 1 second to react and either dodge or invuln before his burst lands.

More damaging, but much more difficult to land, starts in fire with phoenix into air/arcane burst. Moving around makes this almost impossible to land, so don’t stand still when fighting an ele.

While ele does have the highest instant burst in the game, most classes can come close. Thief and guardian are much more survivable and can pull 90% of the damage in the same timestamp. Mesmer needs a little more setup, but can still do a lot of instant burst.

They’re supposedly working on adding leagues like Starcraft II/Lego Legends. Newbs would start out in the bottom league and have to advance through intermediate and master leagues. They haven’t given any sort of timetable yet.

Passive builds shouldn't be banned

There is a place for passive builds (any ranger, phantasm mesmer, regen warrior) as a starting point for new players. It lets them concentrate on what their enemy is doing and less on managing all of their abilities. These builds should be appreciably weaker than more complex builds played at the skillcap.

Above passive builds should be spammy builds (necro, engi). They require more effort than just logging in and pressing 1, but they still let you get away with not using your abilities in an optimal way.

Then you should have the competitive builds where blowing a cooldown at the wrong time puts you at a big disadvantage, your damaging abilities are devastating skillshots that are either very difficult to land or require setup and there are a lot of cooldowns, boons and other abilities to keep track of. No build quite fits into this catagory yet. Ele is closest if you remove air/arcane instants.

Currently, this basic concept is tipped on its head and its why basically everyone is unhappy.

My initial reaction to Diamond Skin was that it was a hard counter and terrible for the game. Now I think it’s just terrible. Engi and ranger put out enough direct damage to break through it fairly easily, necro in dire gear can spam life blast for 1.4k crits and condi mesmers can die in a fire because kitten those dudes.

Other than PU mesmer, DPS guardian is probably the best 1v1 build you’ll find. Hambow on a point is pretty stupid too and S/D thief is still very strong.

The balance in this game is obnoxiously bad and it’s even worse in WvW because ANet doesn’t balance with stat inflation, food and other buffs in mind.

Every class needs nerfs, including ele instant burst.

If the best builds were not light years away from everything else, there would be a ton of viable options that every class could play. BM ranger is still fantastic, it just gets buried by the current OP cheese. Ele could be competitive with some builds if all the cheese was nerfed out of the game. Shatter mesmer would be top tier again.

Why you think protection is 800 Armor?

800 is probably a little low, but it’s not that far off as far as quick guesstimates go.

Say you were hit by an attack that does 2 million damage (pretty common). Depending on armor/protection, you would take:

Armor – damage
1836 = 1089
1836 +P = 729
2580 = 775
2580 +P = 519
3516 = 568

My warrior build has 2,872 armor with a zerker amulet on.
The old “OP” cleric’s amulet bunker ele had 2,580 armor.

Old ele was loaded with boons (protection, regen and vigor says hello) and stupidly high heal, from almost dead to full every few seconds.

Protection is equivalent to ~800 armor. A soldier/cleric/rabid warrior can have more than 1k armor more than the old cleric ele, effectively having permanent protection in comparison. The warrior also puts out a lot of damage, where a bunker ele hit for basically nothing.

And it was nerfed out of the game. Not exactly the example you want to use to try to defend your cheese.

The problem is that a hammer warrior can go for Zerker Amulet for full damage, for he gets all the armor he needs from the defense traitline, which is needed for hammer.

Wat. 300 armor from 30 pts in Defense is all armor he need? Or there is a hidden talent helping you to get x2 armor? Show me your secret build.

My warrior build has 2,872 armor with a zerker amulet on.

Every class should have easy to play builds with passives that allow newbs to get into the game and play without getting destroyed while learning. Those builds should be weaker (not completely worthless) than a build based around active abilities that need to be timed and can be interrupted.

The problem is that healing signet puts out not just more, but in some cases twice the healing per minute of other heals. All while attacking, dodging, stunned, whatever and without pushing a single button.

That’s imbalanced.
That’s bad game design.

Yes, I played warrior up until they were overbuffed and no they didn’t drop like flies unless they were just insanely bad players. Warrior was never the terrible class terrible players made it out to be. Bad players just couldn’t get over their zerker Huuurrrduuurrrr brrraaades mentality and understand that the only classes that could compete with zerker in any meta were thief and mesmer.

In WvW warrior/guardian hammer trains were meta from day one because of the amount of CC and over the top survivability they had. Warrior was very strong against power classes, but needed a few buffs to help them against conditions. Instead, they just super powered them against everything so that even bad players could face roll with them.

I 100% agree that this trait is a hard counter to rabid necro and I think it’s a terrible change to the game.

That said, I have no sympathy for you what so ever. Condi spammers have facerolled long enough and anything that makes them cry makes me happy.

It’s perfectly alright for a build to have high health, armor, healing, CC, and damage. Especially when it takes a lot of skill to play the way warrior does.

Staff zele has a lot of long range AoE, and some support but you will die a lot and be a burden to your team unless you’re a very skilled player.

Power necros put out a lot of AoE damage but it falls off once their wells are on cooldown. They’re stupidly survivable, even as a zerker and can pop plague form if they get in trouble (use blind).

Condi necro has no place in organized large scale PvP because there are going to be AoE condi removals flying around quite frequently.

So is it really that eles are weak, or are the players (including myself) not good enough yet? I lean toward the latter as I see so many flaws in my own gameplay, but still find myself winning matches because the things that I am doing are not at all weak.

I lean more toward the former. Go back and watch your broadcast after you’re done streaming and compare how many mistakes you make to your opponents. There are so many times when I can miss one dodge at full life and just say “welp, I’m dead.” That pretty much never happens when I play warrior, necro, thief, mesmer or guardian. I need to make multiple consecutive mistakes to lose a fight on other classes.

It’s not realistic to expect yourself to play perfectly to compete with other people who are mediocre or even bad. I feel like I can dodge most of my opponent’s important skills, land most of my important attacks and still lose because ele is mathematically weaker than any of the meta builds. If your burst fails to kill someone, the cooldown before you can really hurt them again is so long that pretty much any class can recover from it, while your opponent can generally try again every 10-15 seconds until you slip up or run out of escapes. Even if they only land part of their burst each time, it can quickly overwhelm an ele’s sustain over an extended fight.

I’m not agreeing with the people who say ele is garbage and can never win, but you basically have to have everything go your way to come out on top against a meta build played by a competent player. Outside of tPvP ele is in an even worse position because of all of the 5 cheese blends that don’t function properly in the conquest meta (PU mesmer, DPS guard, etc.).

It does low-mediocre damage, has poor condi removal, struggles against most burst builds and generally doesn’t excel at anything.

They care, they just have no idea what they’re doing, don’t listen to people who do and have a history of being condescending and borderline hostile toward the community.

Now they’re squandering all of their resources on EOTM and the only thing I’ve heard about it is how the PvE works and how annoying it is to fight on a giant version of skyhammer (Dear devs, EVERYONE HATES SKYHAMMER).

They should have put those resources into important things, like making use of the northern half of the BL maps, raid/warband functionality, mechanics to discourage omniblobs, quality rewards for WvW (long time sPvP players and skyhammer exploiters were just handed thousands of gold last patch), and (crazy thought) class balance specific to WvW which isn’t based around the ability to stand in circles super hard.

It works like this in WvW and it hasn’t really had the desired outcome. The losing servers have mostly shut it down by midweek. By that point, most of their activity is from diehards who only care about fights and alts running in the karma train to level up.
