Time sinks & MMOs just go hand in hand. Sure, quality can be improved but the quantity will always be there.
Hearts are not timesink since you cant repeat them. The timesink zones (orr, silverwaste, etc) doesnt even have hearts.
Of course not all are going to be high quality but Anet managed to keep them quite diverse compared to many random quests in MMO that seem like the mobs are placed there to kill, rather than the quest being there because of the mobs.
A time sink is simply an activity that consumes time. It does not need to be a repeatable event to qualify. Hearts require repetition of the same actions for no other reason than the sake of delaying completion. Hence, time sink.

People that claim PvE is broken because Zerker is meta don’t seem to get that nothing is really broken – it’s just human nature.
People will always look for the most efficient way to do something. You can take away Berzerker gear and something else will just take it’s place. Unless you can design a system where absolutely everything is 100% equally effective, there will always be a “meta”. There will always be people who crunch the numbers & seek to min/max their efficiency even if it’s by just a slight margin.

Preferbaly buy ascended trinkets (rings and amulet) with laurels in LA. You can make exotic backpieces and then choose what stats it should have, but if you have guild commmondations then you can buy beserker backpieces at LA at the guild mercant if your guild has unlocked it. Ask if you need more directions.
That’s pretty much what I’m doing, got all the other trinkets in ascended, just short 1 ring + backpiece, so I’m just looking for a temp filler item that I could get with karma so I don’t waste gold.

My main is an Engi because I love the versatility the class offers me and the wider arrange of abilitise you gain access to through kits. Playing one to it’s fullest potential is always a lot of fun. But ever since I came back from my break I’ve honestly gotten lazy. While catching up on LS I tend to camp FT or Bomb kit and just spam 1 while specing for survivability. It’s completely sub-par for groups but let’s me solo faceroll through the content.
So I figured it’s time to roll a new class, and the only other one that really catches my eye is the Ele due to the same versatility and variety of choices in 1 setup.
Now I’m a total scrub with Eles so bear with me on this. Been reading a few threads to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t, I saw several variations on the 6/6/0/0/2 build and took a stab at making one myself, ended up with a build that looks like this:
A few questions regarding the build:
1. Is Fire VIII overkill/underwhelming considering the condition removal of Ether Renewal?
2. Does the Fury from Fire XI stack with consecutive blasts?
3. If yes, does it make Air I redundant or does the swiftness make it worth keeping?
4. Is the extra damage from Air XIII worth it considering I have several KD/Stuns I can use or should I swap it out for a trait with more utility?
5. I only have the two stun breaks on irkingly long CDs. Considering their survival utility, are they worth keeping or are there better options?
6. Are any of the elites considerably better than the other or do they come down to personal preference?
For now I’m just looking at solo play to get a hang of the class. I know pretty much anything works for solo, but I’d rather learn there and later I can fine-tune my builds for dungeons/WvW after getting to know the class better.
Also I haven’t really stretched my mind to what is a decent armor/rune/sigil setup, so any suggestions their are welcome.
Any suggestions for good rotations? I’m looking at starting a rotation along the lines of
Ring of Fire->W->Frozen Burst->E->Earthquake->Churning Earth
which should give me Fury & couple stacks of Might. Still looking at the rest of the skills to determine what works with what.
Cheers for any & all feedback!

I don’t know why… but these new maps and mobs DO make me think of how frustrating a time I had when I was in Orr. I get the impression That we wont be able to walk 10 feet without bumping into a crowd of Mobs that use CCs every half-second and chase you for 500 miles before disengaging. Agreed.
People seem to forget how tiresome undead became after completing the Personal Story and 3 maps consisting of only undead.
Orr was raised from the depths when Zaitan awoke. What exactly did you expect to be there? Of course it was all undead. That’s because Zaitan corrupted every available corpse in those areas.
I understand why there was undead. That doesn’t change that killing wave after wave after wave of undead started getting old fast. I’m hoping they don’t make the same mistake and at least add some variety in the expansion

Which is pretty much how every single world boss, dungeon & fractals work. It all requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelieve, I don’t see why a new boss would be any different
The world bosses are not unique though. Most of them are either a rank or just a random extra strong enemy.
Dungeons are locked in time. What happens in the Dungeons happens once. Not every time you do them.
Fractals takes place in the Mists, the rules of the Mists are mysterious and thus standard logic does not apply to them.
Getting to kill one of the Elder Dragons in a open world zone on the other hand would be rather impossible to explain. Especially considering the fact that it would have to respawn more or less on-demand so that people could finish it whenever they felt like it, rather than having to wait on a schedule.
It is also the fact that they are massive and performance as mentioned in the second part of my post.
Let’s talk specifically about the three lieutenants then: Claw, Shatt & Teq. Very repeatable and are on a schedule.
Claiming dungeons are locked in time and logic doesn’t apply to Fractals is simply suspension of disbelief. The truth is that because of the mechanics of the game those events are repeated over and over and over ad nauseam.
Why is it now impossible to apply that same suspension of disbelief to another major event?
As for performance related issues, they have already proven it’s not plausible to make the dragons in the size they should be according to lore. Zhaitan was already greatly downscaled in the dungeon instance. So whether it’s in an instance or open world, they won’t be able to make it even closely up to scale, so the performance won’t be much worse than the average world boss fight (although I’ll agree that’s not saying much).
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
I’ll be getting to 80 with tomes.
How your char plays at 1-60 is completely different to how it plays at 80. Certain traits can completely change a playstyle, so what you learn on the way to 80 could potentially be useless once you get there because the options you have available to you changed.
I’d rather have all my options available and from there experiment and learn how the class works at it’s full potential.
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
I’m curious as to why you think a map-wide event wouldn’t work? Killing the dandelion in Silverwastes is a pretty good example of map-wide efforts culminating into a big boss fight.
But yeah, anything other than a repeat of Zhaitan
Because defeating a massive unique boss just to have it respawn 10 minutes later is rather silly?

Them talking about challenging raid content, them hiring a raid designer and them having a CDI to talk instanced raids leads me to believe we will be seeing instanced raiding in HoT.
Open world content is flawed.
It is flawed because it must be toned for simplistic minded people. Otherwise you get simplistic minded people screwing up the event for everyone else because they cannot figure out how to do an event or even learn via watching a youtube video on it.
Short version:
You end up with the kitten that happens in Silverwastes

Sorry if my op wasn’t getting across what I meant. I’m not saying the game has a trinity right now in any way.
What I’m saying is at least in my server the lfg is nothing except warriors, guardians, eles, and sometimes a mesmer. I try joining as a s/d ranger I got booted. I tried going in on my d/p thief I get booted. My main suggestion was an actual dungeon queue for people who experience this issue and don’t care who they play with they just want to play. But just not on a specific wanted class just to get into groups.
That has more to do with the meta than a trinity. Warrior, Guardian and Ele together make the most effective dungeon running team. Mesmers get added because they can also speed things up. So many people only want those classes, and only with certain gear and certain specs so runs go as fast and efficient as possible
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
The “trinity” system is an archaic system that needs to go away.
So you are saying something is bad just because it is old? Democracy is old too and I dont see people questioning that just because it is old.
Lots of new games are releasing with trinity system or some variation of it. Also the most successful games have it.
To be fair, GW2 did try to take a bit of a newer approach to MMOs, so even though being old doesn’t make a concept bad, it does mean it might not have a place in the game

I love that moment when “Scrubs” pwn “Elitists”.
The “scrubs” obliviously believe that they pwned “elitists” when they enter the “elitist” groups and make them fail because their ignorance ruins the synergies and strategies which are required by “elitists” to be so efficient.
That’s a rather condescending view-point. It’s not unheard of for a scrub to end up out-performing elitist that were not as skilled and finely tuned as they thought they were. Hardly means the scrub made them fail or ruined there synergies.
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
It’s a pain to read this thread as it seems that many can’t think out of the box: why the hell do do they think that a new level cap would destroy balance, other content etc. MMOs are constantly in a flow of change. Old content can be rescaled, changed, deleted, altered whatever. There are a lot of concepts if they really go for a higher level cap (which I don’t think they’ll do).
Arguments are null and void – do not judge a priori if you don’t even know the concent of a new level cap. Maybe they have a different approach.
Well since you’re able to think outside the box, answer me this:
What would 10 or 20 more levels add to the longevity of the game that just the addition of new content would not?
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
The “Zerker Problem” is the result of two choices made by ArenaNet:
1. Having Active Defense (dodging).
2. Having all offensive and all defensive stat allocations.Choice 1 is one that I agree with, as it makes the game more fun.
Choice 2 is the problem. When you make a game that allows a large difference between the best and worst in terms of DPS, the percentage of “unacceptable” builds is also larger. This leads to a playerbase split between those who demand the most efficient runs (and those who blindly think they are following the most efficient runs just because they copy their build) and those who don’t care that much about efficiency and are just playing to have fun. Once those two groups meet up, the terms “elitists” and “scrubs” show up almost instantly.Ideally, there would be no gear sets that have only offensive or only defensive stats as this would squish the possible DPS range and increase the number of “acceptable” gear sets which would then make both groups less hostile to each other. Obviously, there would still be the actual “elitists” who only want the meta in their group because they are doing speed runs (which, let’s be honest here, don’t have a problem with scrubs because they aren’t using the LFG tool, they have a whole guild dedicated to excluding non-meta players which keeps them out of the fray) and the actual “scrubs”, but they will have less of an impact.
Unfortunately, it’s probably too late to delete people’s gear and force them into a narrower band of DPS possibilities (remember all that ruckus over the Magic Find removal? and that wasn’t even a helpful stat at all!), so we are stuck with the current toxic environment where the two sides throw stones and hurt everyone in the middle.
As stalker-ish as this might sound, I enjoy reading your posts
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
I don’t think anyone asking for something at this point realistically hopes the devs will suddenly add it. At this point it’s more a collection of what people hope will be happening than a request for it to happen
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
So I’ve read a lot of posts about how this game doesn’t have the trinity in the game which is a great thing. However it seems the players themselves made a trinity. Warrior, guardian, elementalist.
Often times other classes such as ranger are simply just ignored. Because of this instead of a tank, dps, and healer role shouldn’t we try something else?
Why not enter a queue that needs 2 heavy armors, 2 medium and 1 light(just an example)
Why make a game with no trinity that still has a trinity player made that shuts out so many people.
I remember when the game came out no one cared what class you were making the game fun. But those days are gone now. The queue was only a suggestion to. Premade parties of 5 warriors can still be made for people that can’t spend an extra 5 minutes in the dungeon and a player queue could combine all servers.
Thoughts? And again yes Premade parties are fine, but a dungeon finder queue can be for everyone else.
I support 100% the trinity system. The problem is that you cant have a tank without aggro generation controlled by the player. They could create sigil/runes of aggro generation. Maybe some weapon skills could generate aggro, like a guardian/warrior mace or shield. Or give mace/shield passive aggro generation.
One problem with the lfg system you proposed is that the light/medium/heavy armor are not relater with been tankier or not.
The problem is that GW2 wasn’t designed to support a trinity system. No class can indefinitely tank, even if they can keep aggro 100%. At best they will need to constantly kite the target while the rest of the group helps with CC, and that is exactly how the current system works (the only difference being the enemy can change targets).
And only a few can constantly heal (first that comes to mind is staff Eles) but they are mediocre at best with burst of high heals. They will be more effective switching back & forth between helping with CC and doing damage, and then healing a bit (which, again, is how the game currently works).
And that’s not even mentioning things like world bosses where tanking wouldn’t achieve anything because most attacks are AoE and not focused on individuals.
To implement a Trinity would require a revamp of several classes as well as a lot of game mechanics.

I’m not using anything as an argument, I agree with Zerker being perfectly viable and doesn’t need any changes.
My post was addressing how you claim the suggestions were terrible and poorly thought out, and you then proceed to use an equally terrible and poorly thought out argument to counter the suggestion.
Basically real combat concept – video game translation. It was a tl;dr where I don’t elaborate on how close reality is a basis for active combat in VGs. It’s not a poorly thought out argument, but I did not immediately elaborate on it intentionally for obvious reasons.
I understand what you’re saying, but I think GW2 combat is much too far from being realistic for realism to be a valid reason to disregard a suggestion.
We’re just going to have to agree to disagree
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
I should’ve clarified more. It was never intended to be a meta playstyle. All playstyles were intended, but the zerker meta became the de-facto meta by the community. It was never intended by the developers, and it was also never encouraged or restricted by the devs (from what i’ve read anyway).
Damage was never supposed to take priority over anything else. The self-reliance of the individual was/is the intended playstyle. This is why all classes got a healing and dodge skill. This is why the traditional trinity playstyle doesn’t work in GW2.
Damage avoidance is only preferred because of dodge, but that doesn’t mean it was ever intended to replace damage reduction.
This just proves that gw2 needs balancing for all different playstyles, otherwise you have one role, which ironically, gives less choice than a trinity mmorpg.
Devs don’t determine what the meta is, players do. Players figure out which of the viable options is the most effective.
And damage was always suppose to take priority. Yes, all builds should be viable, but all builds have one thing in common – damage. All classes were made into DPS with different types of tanking and healing spread out over different builds. It’s why you can’t constantly heal or defend – at some point you have to stop and do damage.
So for the players looking to optimize their gameplay, it was just a matter of seeing what does the most damage. If you nerf zerker then something else will just take it’s place. As long as there are people who min/max, there will be a meta and some damage dealing build will be it. Nothing ANet does, no amount of balancing/nerfing/encouraging/restricting, will ever change that.
DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
Terrible suggestions and not well thought out.
Can any of these anti-zerker at least get some sort of real combat experience (minimum spar with someone, not booty boxing and pads) however short term it is and complain why your opponent doesn’t get hurt when his fist meets your jaw.
So you’re countering a terrible suggestion with a terrible argument? Comparing a game’s mechanics to real life?
Seeing as reflection is a terrible suggestion because that’s not how it works in real life, let’s look at a few more unrealistic features:
Buffs? No way, out.
Telegraphs on the ground telling you where not to stand? What nonsense is that? Gone
Instant healing? Regeneration? Pfft, don’t even get me started. Shift-DeleteNo seriously, I could do this all day…
Taking things too literally, lol that’s one of the worst arguments people can throw back.
3rd person action games, combat. Hand hits face. Not hard to connect the dots see where video games such as this is going towards. Element of fantasy sure, but the core of it touches upon reality. Previous generations of games are limited by technology, though sometimes results can be creatively pleasing, a lot of people like more elements of reality especially on combat; not who has the best macros. Kinect, Wii, PS Move – tries to translate real life movements to video games, technology is pushing towards reality.
Stop forcing a game to be something it’s not. Also, ground telegraphs was implemented for the less skilled. I can’t do this all day because I’m actually a busy person, but please do go on, if it entertains me it would be amusing to share some of me free time.
edit: FYI retaliation, and it’s not commonly a permanent buff for obvious reasons.
Couple of popular and recent action game examples that tries to mimic real elements of active combat while maintaining the fantasy setting. Demon/Dark Souls, Monster Hunter. Is gw2 trying to be a full on action game? no, but it seemse to be going towards a hybrid of action and moba-like (intentionally or otherwise), and in mobas full glass is perfectly viable.
I’m not using anything as an argument, I agree with Zerker being perfectly viable and doesn’t need any changes.
My post was addressing how you claim the suggestions were terrible and poorly thought out, and you then proceed to use an equally terrible and poorly thought out argument to counter the suggestion.

DODGE!!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvS6zMThiZU
I find it funny how some of you think that it’s not a problem. Yes, OP can play how he wants, but that’s just avoiding the problem altogether. The zerker playstyle was never intended. It just became the preferred de-facto meta, because it’s more efficient, and it’s borderline exploiting the A.I. mechanics. Anet just gives it a pass because they refuse to update the A.I. in old dungeons.
Stacking on a boss isn’t tactical at all, and it’s outright laughable. Any other MMO, even action-combat ones, don’t even have this. They have A.I. that responds accordingly to mindless gameplay like this.
Living story bosses are even more challenging. Anet has proved this, but they just don’t want to update the old dungeons with better A.I., as was said during that video interview during feature pack 2.
So you’re saying playing as a glass cannon was not intended? In a game where damage takes priority over defence or healing? Where damage avoidance is encouraged over damage reduction?
