Just wanted to say that I was super stoked to hear about new legendaries that couldn’t just be bought outright with gold. I’ve been playing since beta weekends, but I mostly played WvW and by the time I could afford a legendary, they were so commonplace that it didn’t really feel worth it. They weren’t prestigious anymore.
The new greatsword / hammer would have been, though. I’d be logging in every day to complete it (whichever I thought looked better). It was a major factor for me in buying the expansion. And now to see them get scrapped…
Between this and the current state of WvW, I don’t have any incentive to log in anymore.
There was a possibility of developing it into an e-sport — 3 years ago. Way too late now.
Seriously. Shiny new game, HUGE playerbase full of competitive PvP players that crave large-scale fights, great graphics, extremely fluid combat system, player-friendly payment system (no Pay-to-win), basically the go-to RvR game with little to no competition.
Nah, screw that. Let’s just straight-up reject any sort of GvG system and instead string those players along for 3 years. We’ll focus on the extremely crowded / saturated 5v5 community instead; surely that will work out.
I wouldn’t even care that much if this game-mode didn’t have such potential.
Yeah I remember.
I also remember when hundreds of competitive WvW guilds were recruiting players prior to launch, across all servers.
Or when hundreds of players would line up at the portals in Lion’s Arch right before reset occurred, and people would curse wildly in comms if they got stuck in queue.
Or when you would have massive 3-way fights at north camp over the orb, and they’d continue along the roads all the way down to the keeps.
Or when you’d be playing on maps and it was regular to see 5-6 sets of orange swords (not sure if they changed the player req. or just more people ran in guild groups back then).
I also remember when ArenaNet had a good reputation as a developer, and players in WvW had faith that they would put resources into supporting and improving the best RvR game on the market, rather than ignore key issues for 3+ years and watch it die a painful death as it hemorrhages players and guilds.
Those were the days. I feel bad for players that missed the first year of WvW. It had a ton of issues (culling, orb hacking, glitched queues, free transfers etc) but the playerbase was passionate and the fights were intense and a ton of fun.
For anyone interested, here is “The Future of WvW”, posted by Devon Carver 2 years ago:

I’m seeing “no rally” pop-up a lot.
Thoughts?
I think this would be great. Rally mechanic has always been ‘broken’ in WvW compared to Spvp. You could down 20 enemies and have them all rally off ONE guy. It’s a crutch for large zergs and simply reinforces that playstyle.
Additionally, ‘bad’ / newbie / uplevel players are referred to as ‘rallybots’ and are dissuaded from running with certain guild groups. People get angry, insults fly around. It creates a bad experience and goes against one of the selling points of GW2, which was that you’d always be happy to see another player come help.
I’d say get rid of it for a week and see how it goes.
Due to its unintended behavior, the Symbolic Avenger trait has been temporarily disabled until the next scheduled release. If you were using this trait, we suggest you select a different one until the trait is re-enabled.
Gonna give grenadier the same treatment?
We are looking at many things. And the reports you share are extremely helpful in honing in on the most critical issues.
The correct answer was “Yes, we understand that Grenadier is literally breaking PvP in our game and are quickly working on a fix. Sorry for the huge delay in fixing near-instant 15k+ AoEs from stealth.”
Same, client crashes when trying to inspect builds
To more directly answer some of your point….We are adding a system that lets you change the stats for your ascended gear (weapons and armor) next Tuesday – which will cost a combination of 10 spirit shards, piece you don’t want anymore, 5 ectos, and an exotic insignia of the stats you want to convert to. Legendary Gear will remain the gear that can freely change stats any time.
-CJ
(Edited to clarify weapons and armor)
I literally just thought of this this morning, and typed out a thread during lunch. Thought I was such a smart guy but you guys are way ahead
FWIW, here’s what I had:
Title: Ascended weapons and armor should have mystic forge recipes that allow you to change stats
One of the biggest drawbacks of ascended weapons and armor is that, because of the large financial and time investment, you are effectively locked into stat combinations and particular builds. You can change your traits on the fly, but you are stuck with your stats. This causes issues when certain builds get buffed / nerfed, or new stats are introduced (i.e. Nomad and Sinister) and people want to switch builds.
For the over 500g required to obtain a full ascended weapon / armor set, I believe you should have some flexibility in your stat allocations. Legendary weapons allow you to switch stats on the fly, but I believe that should remain a legendary ‘perk’. Instead, I’m proposing that there be mystic forge recipes that swap out your old ascended piece with a new one. For example:
Recipe: Wupwup Masque + Zojja’s Essence (I made this up) + 2 whatevers = Zojja’s Masque,
where Essences, for each stat combination, are purchased using Spirit Shards or some other currency.
This would preserve the current system for obtaining ascended gear, but just give players a method to switch stats if they really want to. I feel like it would give players a greater incentive to work towards ascended gear and do so in a better way than simply increasing the stat differential between it and exotic.
I agree, I don’t mind paying $50 because there is no sub fee, but I find the lack of a character slot as kind of a slap in the face. Revenant is one of the key features of the expansion and yet it’s hidden behind another paywall. I’ve never seen another MMO do this, and neither has Anet because they gave you character slots for expansions in GW1.
Honestly if they just changed it to this, it would quell a lot of this ‘rage’.
-New players get base game + expansion for $50
-Vet players get expansion + 1 character slot for $50 (for Deluxe and Ultimate editions, substitute equal gems to compensate for character slot)
For those that don’t think there’s enough content to warrant the $50, that’s fine. Nobody is forcing you to buy it right now, just wait for the rest of the info to come out.
How about this?
- Shield of Absorption cooldown goes from 30s to 24s baseline.
- Shield of Judgement cooldown goes from 25s to 20s baseline.
Added to the release notes maintained in General Discussion.
Edit: For clarification, the shield recharge trait is still there on top of this. It brings the cooldowns from 24>19s, and 20>16s.
Appreciate you posting this in here. Instead of CD changes, I’d rather our shield was actually able to proc one of our plethora of “on block” traits. Because, y’know, it’s a shield. And warrior shield blocks. And engi shield blocks. Yet Guard shield doesn’t block.
Also, the shield trait is still (relatively) bad. It’s competing with another trait that gives toughness, and it’s Master-tier when Warrior and Engi shield traits are Adept-tier.
Is there anything at all you people won’t complain about? I have 9 full ascended sets, at least one of every ascended weapon, typically 2-3 of some. I’ll have to adjust my armor to make way for the new changes too, but if you farmed as hard as I had to in order to get full ascended gear, then you best believe it better be like a 10% increase. If you don’t want to farm for ascended or fight people with it, go play PvP.
This guy gets it. My question is, why stop at only 10%? If you farm much harder than everyone else, shouldn’t you be getting at least a 50% increase? I feel like if you put in the hours and 500+ gold for Ascended, you should be able to 1-shot people in Exotics. After all, that’s basically how mass pvp works in every other generic MMO, and people bought GW2 knowing it was going to follow the exact same formula. So they shouldn’t be upset.
Stalwart Defender: Gain 180 additional toughness while wielding a shield. Shield abilities have 20% reduced recharge.
This should have been changed, the devs even mentioned in the last livestream that it was lackluster and redundant. There’s still 0 reason to ever take shield, and it’s competing with another trait that gives basically the same amount of toughness to you and your entire party.
Nobody even bothered to go back and look at it.
I remember when they nerfed Shield 4 to give 3s of Prot in spvp instead of 5s. It was back when Guards were running 2x Water, 2x Monk and 2x Earth to get really high boon duration.
Well, it’s May 2015 and you can’t even run that setup anymore. Yet when the devs made the last balance pass, rather than bring the Prot back up to 5s they lowered the cooldown instead. It’s like nobody at ANet even remembers nerfing it in the first place.
Shield 5 is only good for the knockback, it offers hardly any defensive utility. Nice, an immobile bubble that roots me and merely absorbs projectiles, so that it doesn’t trigger any of our several ‘on-block’ traits. Also, none of my allies would ever want to ‘take refuge’ in my awesome shield because it offers 0 damage mitigation from melee, AoEs and anything else the game doesn’t consider a projectile, nor does it provide any useful buffs, just a crappy heal if the Guard even bothers to cancel the skill early.
I still remember when I was new to the game and I tried protecting allies in WvW with shield 5 for the first time. It was such a glorious disappointment to just watch everyone melt to AoE whilst inside my ‘protective’ shield.
It needs fixing and it’s needed it for a long time.
Doing the Frozen Maw event for the first time in beta, fell in the love with the game at that point. Shaman was really tough back then, you were pretty much fighting an open-world raid boss at level 10 and could easily wipe. Dodging out of his AoEs and ressing people was a lot of fun.
I feel bad for newer players that will never get to experience this, nor anything else even remotely challenging at the lower levels due to the NPE.
People are seriously defending Applied Fortitude / Strength? The mastery that gave you a ridiculous stat boost for what—-training down useless NPCs? And required you to grind out 230 mastery points in order to do so? You guys thought this mechanic made WvW better?
It should never have been added to the game in the first place. WvW was fine without it; I don’t ever remember anyone back then asking for an unnecessary grind in order to get a huge stat boost. Kudos to ANet for getting rid of it.
The bigger issue that nobody is talking about is that ACs are getting buffed YET AGAIN (5% damage modifier going up to 10%)
I do not like this change at all. I am discouraged to see so many players ready to just give up on Tomes.
Tomes are one of the coolest elites in the game, yet here we are talking about removing them from an expansion and replacing them with what, a signet and a shout? Those are such boring and generic skill types compared to Guardian-unique spirit weapons and consecrations.
Tomes aren’t even bad, they were widely used after launch but suffer two big problems:
1) Power creep via Renewed Focus getting 2-3 major buffs since launch; I don’t recall if it always recharged virtues, but it used to root you and was NOT considered a meditation for a while. Also I think the CD was longer.
2) The major trait that made Tomes viable (pulsing stability + longer duration) competed with one of the best Guardian traits in the game (Absolute Resolution) in the Virtue line, the same line that benefits massively from resetting your Virtues via Renewed Focus. You just had to give up too much to take it.
I vote keep Tomes, with Elite Focus built into the skills by default and offering another trait for them outside of the Virtue line. I’d much rather have that than a 3-minute (!) CD signet with a rooted 4+ second cast time that offers no intrinsic stability, no intrinsic protection, no extra 10k HP and no AoE daze. Horrible trade.
I’m also not comforted by the thought that tomes may return as a new specialization, when the current specialization and expansion is coming 3 years after launch. Rework tomes when that specialization is actually in development and not just some abstract, “that would be cool” idea jotted down on a notepad somewhere.
You’ve become Henge of Dragonbrand. Enjoy!
LOL.
True though. But most DB WvW guilds went to TC, Mag, FA or YB. Only a couple guilds went to HoD.
15min+ queues on reset night are not unusual
I’ve just learned that a TC guild went to HOD.
Would that be [STUN]? I saw one of them on our BL reset night and asked if they were coming here and was told they were scouting multiple servers. Are you sure?
No Hel.
Hel as in Helioz is moving to HoD?
No, Hel is not moving nor has even entertained the thought of transferring off TC. Just some rumor that keeps getting tossed around for some reason.
+1, this is something that needs attention and I don’t even GvG.
I’m not sure ANet realizes just how many players it attracted at launch that were seeking competitive, large-scale PvP. These players wanted to fight, they wanted to hone their skills and make a name for their guild, and most importantly they wanted to WIN.
So what happens to these competitive players when they realize that the only way to “win” in WvW is through off-hour coverage and server-stacking? They either:
A) Leave WvW
B) Leave GW2 entirely
C) Stop worrying about PPT and focus on fights / GvGs.
Just offering a basic Battle Arena in the gemstore, that is instanced and allows for up to 20v20 with just copy + pasted map assets (Windmill or OS, whatever), would do wonders for the people in C. It would probably bring back some people from A and B as well, because there is still no good alternative to GW2 large-scale PvP. Let the players worry about leaderboards and setting up tournaments.
This isn’t about adding a 4th gamemode, it’s not about sPvP and esports, it’s about recognizing an issue and providing the tools to allow players to get more out of this game. Players are already willing to pay for it.
Was looking for something else, stumbled upon this by accident: Devon Carver on the Future of World vs. World. This was posted on June 5th 2013, so almost 2 years (22 months) ago. You may want to sit down and pour a glass.
Not going to sit here and bash the WvW team, they have made some good changes since this was posted (account bound WXP, commander color change, siege build sites), but reading some of these 2 years later is pretty discouraging. Highlighting the passages that stood out to me:
Commanders are a major part of the battle, but right now their tools for commanding are few. Guilds are an important part of strategic gameplay as well, but they aren’t rewarded much for taking an active, positive role. These are things we want to improve on because we feel that not only can they increase player investment in the outcome of any particular play session or match, but they simply make the game better for everyone.
Our goal is to continue to encourage organized large groups while giving small, tactical groups the necessary tools to put a dent into larger mobs of less-skilled players. We think that it can be fun to run around in a zerg — but we also think that the game should be about tactical acumen and skill more than sheer numbers.
We’ve also been tossing around some ideas to introduce variety into the matches on a weekly basis. Just imagine the possibility of rule changes that come in for a week and then disappear into the Mists. We’ll go into more detail about this in the future, but we think it will be a big boost to players who want to see some more variety.
-Note, they did try this during the ‘Sneak Attack’ event. It’s just a far cry from rule changes on a weekly basis.
Arrow carts should be deadly for players who get caught beneath their hail of arrows, but there should be a viable way to counter them with other siege — we don’t think that “MOAR arrow carts!” should be the answer to every situation.
Thoughts? I’m cautiously optimistic that HoT will roll out with changes that address some of these, but I’m still frustrated by the fact that ANet could have made this blog post today and most of these issues would still be 100% relevant.
Even T6 was unplayable tonight, especially during 3-way fights. Others were complaining about it in map chat and coms and logging off early because of it. Fights weren’t even that big, 20v20v20 probably.
Been playing WvW since launch, I’ve seen tons of skill lag before but it’s never been as consistent as it has been since that March 16th patch.
Upscaling is a great feature that has been ruined by the rally system. Because of this, it’s generally considered bad manners to follow “hardcore” zergs or guild groups around as an uplevel. You’re more of a detriment to them than an asset. If they ask you to leave, you should just do so. There are a lot of other players and guilds that play WvW casually and will run with you no matter the level, seek them out.
Also, the NPE made uplevels even more useless because they don’t unlock grandmaster traits until level 80. You used to unlock these at level 60, but I guess it was too confusing. An extra 300 range on my grenades? I think I need another 20 levels before I am ready for that…
Yeah, I don’t like this mechanic at all. Rest of the map sounds good but not this part.
First of all, they’re advertising it as a “comeback mechanic”, where smaller forces have a good chance of winning the event over a larger server. I’m just not seeing it. It’d be one thing if the event spawned in multiple, random locations (5 groups of 5 players can cover more ground than 1 group of 50 players), but it occurs in a single location at a set time with a map-wide announcement. Even with 3 drop-off points, you can still spread people out better and have larger gank squads with a numbers advantage.
Second of all, the event itself sounds really boring. Farm PvE mobs, return an item to an npc. The major secondary objective of the new map is a glorified heart quest. In addition, it’s going to heavily favor mobility and stealth, so basically thieves, nike warriors and d/d eles; guardians and necros are screwed. I’d rather have a large boss fight in the middle with a last-hit mechanic a la Chieftan / Svanir in Forest of Niflhel / Baron Nashor in LoL. Would promote more exciting fights, wouldn’t discourage certain classes and could be a REAL comeback mechanic due to kill stealing.
Finally, I don’t think havoc groups will be able to make much progress taking towers while the enemy ‘blob’ is doing the laser event. These towers are going to be much more defensible, arrow carts are as strong as they’ve ever been thanks to the FoV change, and siege disablers are still a thing. As long as 1-2 people stay in a tower, they can buy enough time for the event to finish and for help to arrive. Shrines would be up for grabs, I suppose.
Guild Halls are likely your last hope. Instanced map, invite players from the other guild into your GH, have an option to set members from different guild as hostile, go and fight.
If they do this they can address concerns about GvGs and Dueling with very minimal effort on their part, hopefully we see something similar.
Off-topic: Go TC!
On-topic: I didn’t see them refresh any ‘illegal’ siege while I was following them but that doesn’t mean they didn’t when you saw it. I have some fancy new reporting being built by Shazbawt that will tell me more about what happened before I entered last night (~4pm Pacific).
As for the reporting abuse we’re not going to take action on an account for reporting someone we find to be innocent. The account in question did far more than that. Also, please do NOT encourage other players to join in and hit the report button based on “I saw them do it” because this will land a suspension in most cases.
And lastly; we are considering allowing video evidence to lead to account action. I will say that even if we don’t use it we always check on the accounts in question and I can assure you that the one video link I received last night is leading to two account terminations.
Again; we don’t like cheaters.
Haha yes, go TC!
Sorry about my post, it sounds a little accusatory upon re-reading it. I was just in defensive mode; I was there, I know some of the players that did the reporting and I wanted to make sure they didn’t end up in hot water because of this.
S’all good now. Thanks for clearing those things up and glad that you are getting some new toys to play with. Happy hunting!
I’m cool with most of these features but get rid of that Lich Lord and the Oasis Event, seriously. What better way to troll a zerg than simply follow them into the Lich tower and purposefully try and wipe everyone when you get the AoE damage debuff on you. Those mechanics are fine for dungeons because they are instanced and you can kick trolls; you cannot do this in WvW.
And the Oasis event sounds equally awful, but they didn’t release enough information about it. Do you have to collect cores for 3 hours before you gain control of the laser? Does it constantly destroy gates over a 3-hour timespan? I don’t like it. Let us destroy gates through force, not through some mob-farming gimmick.
I’m also going to miss the regular borderlands, I’ve been playing since beta and honestly the most fun I’ve ever had playing this game has been during 3-way garrison and orb fights. No PvE mobs there to one-shot you, no PvE sentry turrets to randomly do AoE knockbacks, just a big mass of players using tactics, positioning and siege to do battle over an objective.
I investigated this last night and the claims are false. I found the person that was placing siege and terminated that account.
Also, remember that false reporting can lead to a suspension or termination of your account.
First off, let me just say again that myself and others really appreciate the fact that you and other ANet staff are very actively policing WvW and communicating with us about it over the forums. You’re taking on extra work and voluntarily posting in this semi-toxic subforum, which isn’t always easy.
Second of all, just wanted to point out that TC folks that reported the guild in question weren’t doing so as an abuse of the report feature. They ported into TC garrison (which usually has 1650 – 1700 supply), saw that it only had <100 supply, saw a member of said guild physically take supply from a depot, and use said supply to build a 25th trebuchet while a few other members are hopping around the other 24 trebs built around the supply depot. Even if your in-game data cleared them, at least one of them was actively participating in this and got reported for it (maybe he’s the one that got caught, I don’t know).
Most TC players have just seen this way too often and are tired of it. I can see instances where abusing the report system should be punished, but having legit players just trying to play WvW normally and reporting what appears to be blatant siege griefing shouldn’t be one of them.
Always report as bot in WvW. It calls a GM to investigate.
Just wanted to thank you guys for the bans and answering this question; part of the problem is that people didn’t know how to report for siege griefing. I suggested to report for botting the other day and 2-3 people quickly said NOT to do this. So clearly there was confusion.
You guys are awesome, keep it up. None of us believe the “I’m a victim, the GMs are corrupt!” BS that always emerges after a ban wave. See it all the time.
Just be glad you’re on TC, it still has a very healthy WvW population and the people there are really nice and fun to run with. You could have come back to the game and found your server in T7 / T8, where WvW is literally dead (I have an alt account in T7). For TC try playing later than 7 EST, a lot of NA players are still at work or just getting home and settled.
As for the population dropping, I’ve been playing since beta + launch and there has been a definite drop off in WvW players across the entire game. I’ve personally seen lots of guilds disband and / or move to different games. I was on a T1 server at launch (SBI) and the difference between then and the current T1 situation is like night and day. There are still good fights, but it’s not at all like it used to be.
As for why people have left, dedicated WvW players don’t want to invest their time in a game when it’s obvious that the developers don’t want to either. If there are a lot of good changes in HoT, people will come back. If it’s more of what we’ve been getting for the last couple years, expect even more to leave.
I think the best solution / compromise would be for Stronghold to have a 15vs15 option available for custom arenas, with the option to recognize PvE equips / builds instead of PvP. This would promote gem sales and give GvG players what they want: an instanced area to do large TDM fights using WvW builds and food buffs, and it wouldn’t require very much work on ANet’s end.
This would require Stronghold to have a relatively large area that guilds could fight in without the risk of having NPCs come and interfere. No idea if that’s currently the case or not.
There was a large, ANet-initiated discussion about this a few months ago:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Siege-Troll-Discussion
The only positive change that came about was the changes to siege deployment sites, they have variable sizes and proper names (i.e. flame ram build site) so it’s harder to trick people into building the wrong siege. This was a very good change.
However, nothing has been done about the issue of people draining supply and siege-capping an objective. Same guy has been doing it on TC for well over a year now.
Would be nice if you could just right click siege trolls in WvW (on your server) → ‘Blacklist’ option, say if 100 – 250 players do this (unspecified number, variable depending on your tier), the blacklisted player cannot take supply from towers / keeps nor can they use siege equipment. They can still enter WvW, take objectives, take supply from camps, deploy siege and do everything else, they just can’t abuse those two exploitable game mechanics.
Please just let us be able to duel inside them. Or give us the option to flag ourselves for pvp. It’s ridiculous that I can’t fight a guildee using my PvE / WvW equipment in this game.
Just make it an upgrade for PvP guilds to purchase, PvE guilds can just not buy it and wouldn’t have to worry about duel-trolling or ‘toxic atmosphere’ or whatever.
Anet support got back to me, literally trying to offset all blame onto my ISP. I guess all of our ISPS are in on this together.
I have Optimum Online, does anybody without Optimum have this issue or is it really my ISP?
I’m having this issue and my ISP is not Optimum. I’ve tried clearing cache, running as admin and using different characters, nothing works. I still have a blank screen with an invisible ‘get more funds’ or something. Gem Store and TP work fine.
It’s disappointing because I was going to snag an outfit on sale before going to bed, then this happens. I only needed 125 gems. :/
I play WvW, PvE and sPvP and I enjoy the new dailies, I can hop into any game-mode that I want, earn an easy 10 AP and get better bonuses than the previous system.
However, having 2 out of 4 PvE dailies require a fractal run is dumb, I’ve always been able to complete the dailies without setting foot inside of a dungeon. I will just do the spvp daily instead but I feel today’s choices were too restrictive for the players that don’t enjoy pvp.
I like how WvW is endgame and yet gives you nothing to show for it. No exclusive skins nor (realistic) titles to strive for. Fights are fun, but at the end of the day this is still an RPG. Rewards and character progression are important.
Also, EoTM rewards need to be normalized (it’s been almost a year now) but you know they won’t be. Imagine what happens to that map if it’s no longer the optimal place to farm exp.
Custom Obsidian Sanctum, the WvW-equivalent of sPvP Custom Arenas. Good place to duel, do guild scrimms / GvGs and do JP in peace (or not). Can choose pvp rules (free-for-all, teams etc.) Initial cost + monthly renewal.
Guild Halls, same idea but a new structure that is upgradable, has a fight area for dueling / scrimms, a daily chest that drops various skins, and jumping puzzle in the basement. Same pay model as above.
I actually like the idea of going out and doing world events to unlock new traits. I was perfectly fine doing this for the new grandmaster traits.
But going back and applying this unlock system to EVERY trait in the game —- traits that were previously accessible to everyone —- was truly idiotic. It just forced an unnecessary time / gold sink on players with no real gain. I’ve heard so many people complain about this system in voice comms or in-game chat, and I’ve never heard one positive thing said about it. It is very much disliked.
If you want to give players an incentive to go out in the world and earn traits, that’s fine. Either introduce new traits and give them unique unlocks, or, if you REALLY want every trait to be earned, allow us to unlock 1 trait of our choosing whenever we complete a dungeon, mini-dungeon, large world event, jumping puzzle, 100% map complete a zone or capture a significant objective in WvW. Make it a one-time thing so you can’t just keep farming the same thing for unlocks.
On my Necro the other day, I 100% completed Snowden Drifts (it’s my favorite zone) but got no traits unlocked because it wasn’t Gendarren Fields. Or I helped capture an upgraded enemy Garrison in a WvW Borderland, but didn’t unlock anything because I didn’t karma-train Stonegaze Spire in EoTM. For crying out loud, if you’re now going to force us to “earn” our traits, at least give us some freedom in how we go about it.
Hey Fudge,
I will check with the team tomorrow and either they will post or I will report back. I know that i get quite a few /w and mails about players griefing in WvW on TC.
Chris
Thanks so much for doing this Chris, I’ve been sick all week and just seeing this acknowledged has somehow made me feel a little better. John’s been leading a nice discussion about it in the WvW forums.
Appreciate it!
I don’t have the time right now to list all of my thoughts, but I just wanted to say thank you John for taking the time to have this discussion with us. You’re actually taking the time to read though all these posts and are making a conscious effort to fix this problem. It’s honestly very refreshing to see in these forums for once.
Also wanted to reiterate that this is an issue with a very small number of players, and an even smaller subset of those players are the ones engaging in this behavior constantly. These players are like gold sellers, you can put systems in place to deter them, but they will attempt to get around them and at the end of the day need to be removed from the game.
Ideas that I like so far are a cap on the amount of supply you can take from towers / keeps in a given time interval, and a team-wide ‘report / kick from map’. Maybe instead of getting kicked, these players would just lose the ability to interact with supply and siege weapons. Make the number of reports required quite high. Even on low-pop servers everyone hates these players, they should still be able to rally the troops if needed.
I’m not sure if there is a clearcut solution to this in order to prevent people from being able to do any siege trolling, but I do know that this behavior shouldn’t be considered legitimate. Not when it’s the same exact person tournament after tournament doing the same exact things. I don’t give a kitten how much fun someone is having on a bought second account if it’s at the expense of the entire server. This should be considered harrassment on a very large scale.
There just needs to be a better report system. In addition to Spamming and Selling Gold, add a ‘Dishonorable’ report option in WvW. Part of the problem is that we don’t really know how to report these players.
For what it’s worth, I’ve linked this thread elsewhere on the forums to improve visibility, hopefully we can get a response.
Any chance the WvW forums can get some ANet love? We’re having issues with a few players creating a toxic environment in WvW, and there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it besides beg on the forums for some divine intervention. This has been an issue since at least the Spring Tournament, yet there’s been no communication between ANet and WvW players regarding this behavior.

Lack of communication and inaction on this issue have only made it worse, now players flaunt this behavior and even get paid to do it, knowing that ANet won’t do anything about it. Tarnished Coast has at least one player who did this all during the Spring WvW Tourney, was reported in droves, and yet here they are in the Fall Tourney, doing it all over again on the same account, because nobody did anything. It’s extremely discouraging.
I sincerely hope somebody sees this and we can get some sort of official stance / dialogue going. A lot of players take WvW seriously, and this is becoming a significant problem.
Thanks.
It’s clear from this thread that nobody has a definitive answer. As per Mike O’Brien’s ‘Communicating with you’ initiative, can we please get a member of the community team to outline ANet’s stance on this issue?
Our developers post on these forums on a voluntary basis, and in addition to developers, we have a community team who can clarify and be the bridge between players and developers. They’re ready to engage you on these topics.
To be clear, the player in question:
a) Moves from map to map draining strategic supply and wasting it on useless siege
b) Turns catas / trebs 180 degrees from their intended targets
c) Runs siege golems off cliffs
d) Follows commanders around and will throw ballista build sites on top of ram / cata build sites, hoping that players waste their supply building those instead
e) Anything else you can do with siege / supply in this game to grief your teammates.
f) Has been reported en masse since at least the Spring WvW Tournament, yet is still running around doing the same things for the Fall Tournament.
If ANet thinks this behavior is perfectly acceptable then PLEASE clarify your stance. Otherwise, take care of this problem and give players better tools to report these players in the future. Failure to act makes you guys look lazy, unprofessional and generally uncaring about this game mode.
P.S. – You don’t even have to ban these players, just give them a dishonorable debuff that keeps them from entering WvW matches for ten years.
Basically removing the achievement requirement during a tournament is an experimental step we took to reduce the incentive for achievement grinding.
So does that mean you guys are going to bring this design philosophy into sPvP? Imagine how great it would be if you reduced the incentive for match grinding, and players could get their full Glorious Armor sets after about 10 hotjoin matches. I’m sure dedicated sPvP players wouldn’t mind.
Honestly, you made these achievements way too easy while also more than doubling the reward vs. last tournament. Should have been 25-50 events per week, double for EoTM. At this point you may as well just give everyone a Hero’s Mistforged Weapon for hitting ‘b’.
As someone who has bannered plenty of lords, I’m glad they made this change, it was stupidly broken. No one character should be able to contest a point so long with such minimal effort.
For those complaining, you can still rez the lord, it just will take a little bit more effort than hitting a single button while running around on a bulky warrior with stability and virtual CC-immunity.
Are we seriously getting charged for a functionality improvement?
Different colors weren’t requested for cosmetic reasons, these aren’t like quaggan backpacks.
Power / Precision / Vitality
Please DO NOT add armor sets with 3 defensive stats (i.e. Toughness / Vitality / Healing Power), bunkers are already very strong in PvP settings and such a stat combo would make them ridiculous.
If ANet keeps insisting on these ‘competitions’ (leagues, tournaments), then they really should consider getting rid of these week-long matchups and going back to 24-hour ones. Back during those beta matches, people actually cared about PPT and would pull all-nighters if they had to. Now there’s no point if you’re the underdog server; your entire guild could stay up all weekend, win PPT and upgrade all of your towers / keeps to T3…it will all just get wiped out on Monday during off-peak hours and the other server will tick for 500+. Grats, you lost. Hope you can afford those weapon skins!
Coverage would still be a huge advantage in 24 hour matches, obviously. But at least they’d be a lot more competitive (isn’t that the entire point of a tournament?) and would be appropriate for the 24/7 nature of WvW.
Maybe others disagree, I don’t know. I just know that the current system isn’t really fun anymore (IMO).
I’m guessing he meant ranged auto. Glad this is getting looked at, I enjoy scepter but it’s weak atm
No, don’t buff rams or other siege.
Just make ACs have 80% damage reduction vs. siege and don’t let them shoot through the doors. They shoot arrows, they should shred other players but barely nick wooden structures and shouldn’t magically fly through a sealed door.
Make the defenders come outside if they want to destroy the ram.
First of all, there shouldn’t be an incentive for level 80s in full exotics to be farming low-level events such as Maw and Golem. Maw Shaman dies in 5 seconds yet gives you the exact same level of reward as defeating Balth / Grenth, how does that make any sense? Rewards need to scale appropriately so that high-level characters are fighting dragons / temples bosses in Orr and are not bouncing between level 1-15 areas all day.
I remember back in Beta, the first time I fought Maw Shaman it blew me away with how difficult yet fun it was, yeah he was overpowered vs. melee but during the encounter people were dying left and right, it was glorious. It’s sad that new players will never be able to experience that in the game’s current state because 50+ max-level characters jump into the zone and melt the guy in 5 seconds, being rewarded with rare loot for doing absolutely nothing but spamming 1.
Teq / Shatterer / Claw need improved scaling, Maw / Shadow / Golem just need to be fighting a reasonable force of players at an appropriate level in the zone they were designed for. If they’re still too easy, bring back beta Shaman.
