I wouldn’t say no, but I’d rather other things get fixed or added first. As it is now, there’s really no room in our builds for a movement speed trait and our utilities are far too useful to give up a slot.
You mentioned runes, but they’re really not a bad option. Speed runes, traveler runes, centaur runes with mantra heal or an endless tonic. Also focus with boon duration food. There are ways for us to get 100% swiftness without having to give up a trait or utility slot.

It’s free lyssa rune within 35s cd when untraited on a class which highly counters mesmer .
why this is reasonable ?I wish people would stop saying “thief counters mesmer.” That’s simply not true. No one profession counters any other in this game. What you meant to say was “this specific thief build is very effective against this specific mesmer build.”
If you’re having problems against thieves, then consider changing your build to be effective against them. Of course that might lower your effectiveness in other areas, but that’s the trade off.
Lol. Thieves counter mesmers EASILY, and in my opinion, they’re the hard counter to them. A lot of mesmer skills require a target to be used, so many skills can’t be used while a thief is stealthed.
There are plenty of counters built into the class. If a thief runs d/d then they can just CnD on the clones. They have so many ways avoiding a mesmer’s damage too. Along with this, their short bow auto attack bounces off the clones, giving them extra hits and killing the mesmer’s shatter damage. Most good thieves can beat a mesmer by using short bow 90% of the time.
Really the only chance a GOOD mesmer has vs a GOOD thief is if they predict their backstabs/ cluster bomb bursts using distortion or blurred frenzy, or if they somehow catch a thief (who has plenty of evades) with a full shatter.
Thief in the past has PREVENTED teams from running a mesmer, because thieves counter most glass cannons, especially mes. And yes, i’m talking about glass cannon mes and glass cannon thief, because those are the only viable builds they have in high level play.
I really don’t know what to say except practice more or change your build. Consider how viable your one build really is if you’re getting shut down so easily.
both classes aren’t TPVP viable in non-glasscannon builds.
Another myth.
Just wanted to say this is a great guide and thank you for taking the time to write it up and explain it all in one place.
And somebody accusing you of plagiarism is hilarious. “Excuse me, I OWN that specific distribution of trait points.”

Ha thanks! I really like the way it turned out
I’m a huge fan of the ascended scepter model, specifically the healing stat color scheme:
Blackwater build but with scepter/pistol and sword/torch, take reduced manipulations cooldown and take arcane thievery.
I wanna try talking like this guy, it’s hilarious.
Truly the stubbornness you have shown in lending an ear to the numerous criticisms placed upon your amateurish build have caused me to regard you as a lost cause, thus I bid you adieu and pray earnestly that you never materialize on my pvp roster.
I remember watching those videos from MrPrometheus back when they first came out
Whatever happened to him? His vids were so informative.
Sorry i dont follow (clearly dont understand)what are you saying .Why you bring WvW season 2 ,ascended stuff sellable on TP ??
The irony…
I don’t have to unlock it but I want to. And what if some of the runes/traits/sigils turn out to be incredibly strong? Then I’m just weaker than everyone else because I’m poor. I would have to win ~475 games in a row just to earn enough gold for all my characters. That’s assuming I win every single one! Instead of playing the next 1000 games kitten I’m just not going to play.
If you decide you want to unlock it here’s a strategy you can use:
Step 1: Play the game. (Any mode/content you want!)
Step 2: Use the resources you’ve garnered from completing step 1 to purchase your new amulets/traits!
If step 1 doesn’t seem possible for you, then you don’t like gw2 and it doesn’t matter anyway.
So you accidentally bought one of the new amulets and the conclusion that you came to was that Anet had scammed you?
I’m not Anet, but I’ll answer this: Yes.
Nope. It’s black lion keys. Hahaha
Pretty sure they were available less than a year ago.
I run scepter/pistol and sword/torch in pvp/wvw and love it. Scepter and pistol pair really well together, as you can summon your #4, stun with #5 and then immediately begin channeling #3. It’s glorious when it works as they’ll eat a full round of bullets from the phantasm and most, if not all, of the #3 ticks will hit.
My abundance of ret loves pistol whip.
84. Great PvP community. I often think of it as a swiss knife…just that instead of adapting to whatever the circumstances are, it’s just a bunch of tools.
Quoted for brilliance.
Living Story events last for a month. The patch on March 4th will last for 2 weeks coinciding with the remainder of the original month’s Living Story update.
Why is this still a question?
Because Anet should personally call me everyday in case I have a question. Otherwise they’re not being clear and are failing to be open with their community.
I made the mistake to open up 20-30 of those freaking bags (Already have something like two stacks just wanted to give them a try >.<) all i got is my inventory full of crap worth nothing, pve gear (Like 3 silvers maybe..wow i’ll get more just going stomping random nabs in hj) unknown stuff probably needed to craft something you’ll get only going pve (ofc) and some zergs vs doors boosters…
I play pvp only..now tell me, am i supposed to be happy bout those bags? Srsly
No way these are the thoughts of a real human being. Spvp’s finest, everyone.
OP: “Be a decent human being.”
spvp Forum: “wtf who r u 2 tell me wut 2 do?!?! U work for anet, kittenwe have a RIGHT to be toxic/terrible/immature”
I wonder what the average age of this forum is.. I’m guessing somewhere around 15. A whole lot of insecure, awkward teenage angst being unleashed on Anet in these forums.
The pvp community is so toxic. Full of piranhas who want a taste of blood. The nastiness that some display clutters the truly intelligent posters attempting to communicate the needs of this community. For shame.
Quoting this because it’s true. So much entitlement. And for everyone’s information, just because Anet asks for suggestions doesn’t mean that they’re then obligated to implement your terrible ideas. I’ve seen plenty of instances where Anet has changed something based on community feedback, but they are the game designers, not you.
I play spvp and I’m still having a great time. I know changes are coming and I’ll enjoy those too when they arrive. I don’t feel personally betrayed by Anet. It’s hilarious how many threats of “I’m gonna quit I swear!” there are in this thread. Honestly we’d all be better off if those of you making those threats made good on them and went and played something else. We all know it’d be a matter of days before you’re on the forums of that new game complaining about something.
The most broken thing about spvp is it’s forum community.
Cyber systems operations. Need to test for security+ so lots of stidying for me :-(
Hey at least you’re on the cutting edge
Congrats on finishing BMT and best of luck in your AF career.
Don’t We are pretty much the worst class when it comes to S/TPvP. Go with another class if you want to play them modes.
Go away.
I also have the same question – have a 50ish ele that I’d like to get the hang of by playing pvp. Any recommendations on builds for hot join/soloQ?
Seriously, we are VERY weak in S/TPvP right now, unless you like getting melted in seconds then i would suggest not playing S/TPvP. Sure, some “okay” builds like Fresh Air or something but even with that, you will still die A LOT.
Some people enjoy playing the underdog profession. If the extent of your advice is “play something else” then thanks, noted – now please go away.
What AFSC? Just out of curiosity.
Great videos – I’m coming back to ele and these are really helpful. Thank you for sharing and please keep it up!

I may just quit and start a Mesmer. Does Elementalist become better at later levels or am I doing something wrong.
If you think ele is rough to level then you’re going to hate mesmer.
its bonus – so relax^^
Not a bonus for me. You get 40 of them per match, it fills up your inventory and fills it up even more if you open them. I seriously cba to open them, I’m just gonna destroy all of them when my inventory is getting too full.
Is this real? Do people really think this way?
So it’s ok for Mesmer clones to do all the work while the Mesmer themselves is in stealth, but its not ok for a thief to retain stealth for being blocked?
Yes.
The iWarden bug drives me absolutely insane. A skill just completely failing to work should be hotfixed almost immediately.
Lots of boons and stealth(the most kittened implementation of stealth in any game ever lol). And the now im visible for a few seconds, now im not and everyone drops target …… now im visible for a few seconds, now im not, everyone drops target.
And as an added bonus you can summon whatever phantasms you like in stealth without breaking stealth. Plus ur piling up prot, regen, aegis.
Yes I agree mesmers have stealth and it’s disorienting to fight against.
Did you have an argument somewhere in here?
…
Never said PU was OP. Go through my post history.
I’m not here to say if PU is OP or not, ‘cause I really don’t care about that. I just think that it’s a crutch build due to how brainless it is. That’s all.
And I deal with BS thieves by dodging, evading with BF, or stealth. Generally they’re dead before they get the chance.
AoE doesn’t bother my illusions since I fight up close and personal to make use of Illusionary Persona. I don’t try and shatter clones from 1200 range like you seem to assume I have to. It’s called lining them up properly.
With conditions I wait them out honestly, since I rarely get hit in the first place. I don’t run condi removal in my roaming set ups. (Decoy, blink, portal) My entire survival is based on proper positioning and evades.
Also I run Sw/T & GS, full zerker. As I said, traits are 10/20/10/0/30.Anything else? Playing the same way for a year you kinda get good at what you do.
You use stealth? I consider that a crutch.
The problem isn’t that other builds aren’t more viable. It’s that other builds aren’t as easy as PU.
Shatter is perfectly viable. Condition builds without PU are viable. The “problem” is that it’s harder and more risky to roam with this way, and people don’t like that. Players want everything handed to them easy mode, and it seems the new mesmer community is quickly going down that same mindset route.
This is why PU is a crutch. Players do well with it, think it’s because they’re a good mesmer so they try something else and fail. “Well PU is our only viable option.”
No. It’s because while you’re using a build that allows you to ignore half of the classes mechanics, and ignore basic game mechanics (map awareness, smart dodging), you progressively become more and more dependent on the build that allows you to do all of this and can’t be bothered to learn anything else.
This is why I’ve said in every thread about this topic: The type of players that this build has spawned are embarrassing to me and if/when the nerf happens I’ll be more than happy to see them drop the class.
I can see the threads now: “PU build nerf! Mesmer destroyed can’t possibly play moving to warrior.”
What a condescending point of view. You can make the “crutch” argument for any defensive ability or trait. PU really only shines in duels and WvW roaming, 90% of which is dominated by thieves and warriors. I happen to enjoy duels and roaming. Sorry, but I don’t feel like my “gw2 honor” has been compromised when I’m now able to compete with my opponents. When I play PvE, PvP or zerg WvW I don’t trait PU because it’s not useful for those game modes. If it makes you feel better about yourself to play without PU then go for it, but it’s a pretty arrogant mindset to assume PU users are inferior players. PU is a tool to be used, look at osicat – he plays PU, has superior map awareness, understands smart dodging, links weapon skills together effectively, shatters. How can you argue that he’s not using the profession to its fullest potential?
And all this talk about the glory days of when people had respect for mesmers because they played builds which required skill is nonsense. Players of other professions have always complained about mesmers because they’re inherently confusing to fight against.

Why do you care?
Let me rephrase that.. You shouldn’t care.

Can we stop the drama now please?
Considering that Temportal curtain is now getting “fixed” down to 50% (6s) I wouldn’t hold my breath.
But hey, at least now we get to feel important when a whole zerg runs across the curtain and get a whopping 6s of swiftness each, right?
No. Stop with the drama. You have no idea if temporal curtain is being changed.
The patch notes are fake. There’s a sticky in the prof balance forum.
Thanks for clearing it up, Allie.
kitten , there are some really rude people on here.
It’s pretty simple. People don’t like to lose 1v1 fights. PU builds happen to be very strong in 1v1 fights. Therefor, people love to complain about PU.
Quoting this because it’s true.
Except stealth is a main feature of the class. This post is a pretty great example of how people make arguments to nerf something that they really don’t understand.
Nonsense.
One weapon skill on base 30s CD. Two utility skills, 40/90s CD. One elite, 180s, obviously not designed for single-target. Not tied to class mechanics in any way. A single GM trait tied to stealth (The dueling stealth trait counter-acts a stealth-heavy build. It’s also broken and has a horrendous CD).
Yes, we have stealth. No, it is not in any way imaginable a main class feature.
The fact that mesmer stealth is 75% utilities and elite should tell you all you need to know.
Your argument for why it isn’t a key feature of the class is the same as my argument for why it is. Four different ways of accessing stealth, one of which should really count twice (veil) makes it seem prominent to me.
Not going to argue the semantics of “main class feature” with you so I guess we can just agree to disagree.
I think it has become common practice for some people, when they get killed 1v1, to go on forums and start a fuss about nerfing that profession. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Game developers make their own observations and assumptions, they don’t base their game on a bunch of whiners’ opinions.
This. 100% this. It’s the same reason you see people crying for a prismatic understanding nerf for mesmers. Rather than learning from a loss and doing the work to understand how a class/build/trait works, the majority of people will assume the loss was not their fault and the opponent is “op.”
What’s wrong with PU?
It’s a grandmaster trait (XII) in the arguably overall worst trait line mesmers have (chaos), yet everyone is running it. That alone should tell you that something’s wrong.
PU is a sad and continuing attempt to hide the fact that the Chaos line has bad synergy, both with itself and the rest of the lines.
PU turns stealth, a mechanic that is not a main feature of the class into a very powerful tool. When a class that’s not based around stealth suddenly gets a lot more of it combined with aegis-regen-prot spam you get a broken class.
Except stealth is a main feature of the class. This post is a pretty great example of how people make arguments to nerf something that they really don’t understand.
For years I played a game made by a company in Europe. They’d drop their updates while I was asleep, or at work. I didn’t run onto their forums moaning about how they “hate north america” or whatever.
Quoting this because it’s true.

What is the point of this thread?
Agreed, there should not be a WvW rank requirement for getting a Legendary. They need to understand that some players don’t want to WvW. And for those WvW players that complain about having to do PvE stuff to earn a Legendary, I fully support you in requesting that they add WvW-only options for getting those elements too.
Getting a Legendary should require participation in all aspects of the game.
I always knew there was something horribly wrong with Sylvari…
The requirement needs to be higher than 30.
