How do you take on D/P thief?

S/d CAN to an extent use 2 on the weaponset to try and avoid that atack incoming form stealth.

While the first part of 2 will not port, it does set a spot for a return port. If fighting d/p wherein he stealths up for his attack you can use #2 run across the map in some weaving way and direction and try and time another use of #2 just when he expected to attack. This can save you on dodges and generally if using this and a mix of dodges you will win the INI war.

Easier said then done and the higher access to stealth via DE might work to address this disadvantage.

I was thinking the same thing when DE becomes available I feel it would work really well with S/D and P/P even Rifle might work when everyone gets use to the fact that its suppose to feel a little slower but harder hitting from the other weapons. so far i changed the build to add the condi removal signet but i don’t really like shadowstep I get the ground target but I like the condi removal to be instant not waste a dang 50 sec cooldown on 3 condi. That’s just me though as I’ve seen other people use the skill with amazing success.

My current set up is S/D P/P and was wondering if someone can give me tips on how to take on D/P thief? the fight for me is pretty hard and i get rolled almost in seconds and i know there is something im not understanding about the match up and and getting out played like crazy thanks in advance. Good amount of Power for S/D?

Hello just a quick question on the power stat. I was wonder what is a good amount of Power to have on a S/D thief? What should i be aiming for? I’m trying to get that amount for PvE and WvW that i need to do some decent damage but yet keep good amount of bulk to not get 2 shot by anything that moves. what wondering if someone could help me out or point me to a direction to find the information since i really could find anything looking it up on google.

What weapons will you use with Deadeye?

I currently have a s/d build with SB off hand that is designed around Boon theft via both Bountiful theft and RS. Yes it is rather oddball and I have been trying to make it work with exisitng traits and utilities. I think I can get this to work better by replacing the DrD line with DE.

And how do you propose to do that when you lose the steal ability with Deadeye? I don’t think you’ve thought this through. Bountiful theft is useless on DE.

I think the traits that effect steal also work with the new mark so its a range steal basically from what im understanding. and like someone said with sword we have a gap closer anyway so its not like it will be missed to much. Plus the extra damage from the mark over time looks pretty good.

I hope the stealth options with deadeye bring in more ways to play with the sword. I know the pistol will take huge advantage of it especially the mark to once full stacks are up or if you increase it to 7 stacks with trait unloads are going to melt. Well even more than it already does anyway. The only thing i wished for was deaths retreat was either a utility skill or the morphed it to the heal skill instead of rifle since i don’t really have an interest in the weapon but will still try it out since the gameplay might change my mind.

This is mainly a discussion thread about some of the weapons you are looking forward to use. I for one i’m looking forward to see how S/D P/P work with deadeye. I know its not really thought of much but i want to get my hands on shadowmeld and the new malice mechanic with S/D. I think it will bring some more damage while give the set so stealth options as well for insane burst for P/P. Im still getting the handle of PvP and i know D/P being meta as all hell might do better with the spec more so that S/D but I don’t like that playstyle and want to figure out what makes the spec tick outside of rifle. Also what the utilities will have to offer to other sets so some crazy shenanigans hopefully.

Thanks for the reply! I noticed Fist Flurry is kinda weird sometimes to land so i try to land it after I immobilize the target or lock it down some sort of way since at least I believe when it hits it does good burst but i’ll try the signet and test that out too since I think im lacking condition removal.

My next question is about stats I was wondering what a good soft cap for power is? or if there really is one? I have normally 56% crit so I think thats decent enough for damage but i could be wrong but I wanted to see what the power stat cap is to make sure if im doing enough damage or not. I currently sit witht he power signet at 2403- 2500 some where.

Hello all I just came back to the game after a few years and decided to dust off my thief. Im currently using S/D and P/P and having a blast even though last time i played P/P wasn’t really used because of the lack of utility. Hey all,

I took a break from this game for a bit and now im back and i made a new thief. I played a dps guardian but wanted something more “in your face”. I am playing a S/D build since it feels more thief-ish to me and i was wondering what crit% should i be aiming for to do damage without sacrificing to much in other important areas? Im looking for a sweet spot to start out and ill adjust to fit my play style and to how comfortable i get with the class as i go. I looking to mainly WvW this is character if that helps out at all.

No there is no need to defend them about the patch if this was a year ago then OK thus would be fine. We are a year and some months in being last on the list to changes isnt acceptable anymore. They need to take a risk with something in their game that goes more than the class change because everything they are doing is lackluster, flavorless, and safe again nothing attractive about these patch except for the heal and its barely worth looking at on paper after a thread 10 pages worth of suggestions

Honestly devs do us a favor don’t even come into the forums and read or ask for feedback. Quit pretending you care about our input this right here shows you don’t I already don’t look forward to any patch they put out knowing they just mess with numbers to see how it works. No testing is involved with anything you put out and you throw it at us and expect us to be OK and pat you on the head like you did something great. Granted some of these changes are nice nun of the feedback given was even thought about. But its OK you know what’s best for the game. You know how to build a community of good feedback to keep the game going strong. But I still haven’t seen any wow factor from this game. Nothing that makes me want to say “guild wars 2 is better than the original!” But that doesn’t matter this like every other post by the community will be in heard and I again won’t be surprised

I say try out out I mean it might work. Remember though what doesn’t work for some might actually work for you. So be afraid to try a new thing, I was thinking about making a build with celestial gear myself after looking up how the stats would be and how much health I would have and what traits id have it seems pretty good to me. Be also its mainly skill > gear when you play with this class from what I’ve noticed. I’ve seen some cool builds from people that seem strange but work for them. Good luck

I made my guardian because it was the closest thing to a dervish I could get. Then I read the story about them a bit and I got into it and realized I like him more and more with every piece of armor I saw. Guardians defend the people and things that are important, I made him a char because what better way to defend something than being a giant fur ball of fury to viciously attack all who threaten the things you are sworn to defend.

So just coming back from a 2 month break from the game and after reading some of the patch notes it got me excited a bit to test some new things out. And with a return to a fun game nothing makes it complete than customizing your characters look to something exciting and new. So my question is even knowing some of the armours on a male char look weird what are some good ones people notice that make them stand out. I’m looking at the tier 3 helm and chest and they look good. Also the tier 2 helm too. Any suggestions would be great

Hello everyone I took a break from this game due to joining the army and having to go through basic training now that that’s over with and I’m in a setting were I can play a bit in my personal time I was wondering how things are looking for the guardian? I’ve read the patch notes but nothing can quite tell you how something is unless you test it yourself. I have a build I would like to try out that uses bane signet mainly its for playing small group fights with friends in wvw while we cap supply points and the like and I would also like to know with the buff to bane signet is it worth having around now for the passive on a more offensive build? I know might be a dumb question but just have to ask.

I like some of these skills for classes id use mighty landing in a heartbeat maybe add a 3 sec burning effect but thats just me asking for alot in a skill. If not these skills maybe sometime down the line they can give us some new toys to play with to keep things fresh.

I have a char guardian and I think he looks fantastic. Granted I didn’t make him look much like a guardian and the helms are lame on char. Obviously the dev team literally stretched out the helm to barely fit not caring what it looks like. I suggest if you go with your char save up for the cultural helms they look pretty good. My personal favorite and the one I’m currently wearing is the legion helm. Idk about the norn racials but the only racial worth anything to a char guardian is battle roar for the fury and might boons. Otherwise your actually class utility skills will be better for you.

The problem with Guardians right now is their “full potential” is in support / healing builds in WvW. Pure DPS Guardian’s aren’t anymore special than Thiefs or Warriors in terms of front lining, but Support Guardian’s bring a powerful package to the battlefield.

Support Guardians = Boons, lots of group healing, “frontliner”, WoR, Sanctuary/Wall of Lining, and Tome of Courage. <- Huge group support capabilities in WvW.

DPS Guardian = Boons, no group healing, “frontliner”, pulls, and AOE damage. <- No different than any other DPS class.

You are right and that alone make people kind of upset with the guardian most people (namely the ones who play the support end of the guardian) are some what fine with the class and push all the dps aside and tell other to just roll warrior or thief for damage. Guardian should bring something more to the table than just want everyone else in dps does. I mean we have a group wide or more might buff (VoJ traited or EM) but that really doesnt get us anywhere since we still get blown up if we are in a big group of enemies since no matter how “tanky” you are 20+ people will still kill you in 5 seconds.

Zealot's Defense is just to clumsy

I just started using the sword and ZD is ok but you have to set it up to be worth much. I run in small group in WvW with a couple of friends and capturing sentry and supply camps is easy with S/GS combo but I do feel it need to be a bit more reliable maybe make it so we can move while we are doing it maybe at reduced speed like Whirling Wrath but stationary skills that are single target are that effective in a game like this.

Otherwise i just slap a bane signet on my bar or wait until my warrior friend snares them and i just blink and pop f1 and watch the numbers fly.

This whole review of the guardian was needed and I enjoyed reading it hopefully some dev will see this or we can get it sticky to the top so a moderator can see it and maybe pass this along to a dev so they can discuss. The fourth virtue idea is great and the changes to zeal would make me happy since im currently using only 10 points in it for the 10% to burning foes I also would love a 1h build for wvw since recently I started using the sword and greatsword combo for it and I love it to death.

Like I said, you don’t see the sense in it because you don’t know the plans for the class. It doesn’t need to make sense to a player that has no insight to how the game will evolve. Maybe if we had a roadmap, we could make some more intelligent discussion about the change but we don’t. Somethings need to be broken down before you can make them into something better. That’s not irrelevant where testing and code are concerned.

I can see where you are coming from and i agree with you we don’t know how things will change or how the class is going to end up down the line but the only thing we have to go off of is the devs description of the class. So far the description isn’t anywhere near where our class is now. Since the first patch we have been seeing questionable changes and almost the entire time we have had that mentality “trust the dev team they know best” and even though like this most of the changes weren’t game breaking for us even if some made us angry we stuck by that motto. Now is different they are fixing and changing things that dont even need to be changed and neglecting the things that do thats whats worrying most of us. We cant trust something if there is nothing really there to place trust into.

One of the only set of Guardian utilities that actually played like utilities…The bow is pretty much a cast-use, the shield may still be viable against ranged if it can even stay up long enough…Wow, i just don’t get what direction they’re taking with this game. Why did they need to do this? The combat in this game is so braindead casual. No roles, spec doesn’t really matter to teamplay, homogeneous buffing and combo system. It’s just really weak. A step backwards from GW1 combat, why arenanet, WHY?

Its never going to be like GW1 sadly this game is something new they just need to actually look at the problems this game has and read the forums for once to see whats going on and stop add new content for 2 seconds and fix issues the correct way. I think they are afraid of fixing things due to thier fear of breaking more stuff but hopefully im wrong because if they have that mentality then this game wont make it. Not saying its heading that way since the game is still pretty new and the first year of a mmo is usually pretty rough. But they need to really sit down and look at what they have and ways to fix things from classes to content that are already in the game.

Sadly as of right now this is the only game when patch notes come out I dont get excited more so worried.

Eh trust me with the patch that just came out thats not even a big deal what really worries me is that they really didnt change anything. I mean Zeal is still lackluster with traits like Zealous Blade (Greatsword attacks heal for 25 hp) there is not point to put in any points past 10 unless you want to get the power from it then by all means. Also some of our other traits arnt working as intended I say a spirit weapon nerf isnt anything to be bothered with since they were bad anyway.

I think its great that they want to wait until they are sure the patch is ready I don’t know how many games I’ve played that didn’t practice this and received more complaints than the devs here are getting now. I rather have a finished product than a half baked one. I say just get up go out of the house maybe go see a movie, go to the mall, got to the park or to a friends house and wait for it to come out later that way you are distracted from the wait. If you have smart phones or access the the internet through some sort of phone or tablet just check back on the forum later as you are having a good time doing something else. Give the devs a break.

Charr armor design

Its because all they did with the armor for the char is stretched it out to fit the char frame. A lazy way out and it shows but the legion helm looks amazing on the char but that’s because its cultural armor. I wonder what happened to the char armor artwork we saw before release I want some of those cool looking armor skins instead of the stuff we have now. Also want them to actually look at the char and find a way to make them look good in the armor the whole stretch to fit thing they did with them is very lazy and sloppy.

Is a guardian worth making?

This class can support and be extremely offensive at the same time. It has a low hp pool but thats somewhat a godsend due to the fact you can heal pretty well back up to full at times while dishing out damage and mitigating damage or avoiding it all together with blocks and blinds which we have a lot of. Not to mention with some weapons and skills we have protection on for a long time (hammer, Save Yourselves utility skill, inspired virtues) so taking damage with low health isnt to much of a big deal unless you are dealing with super burst focus fire stuff.

In WvW our support and group importance is second to nun with our shouts and light combo fields for condition removal and blast finishers for area might and retaliation and regen with traits to whole party we can bring alot to the table.

In PvE we can support our allies with boons to keep them going and dish out alot of damage and heal ourselves all at once pretty simply and you will always have a place there.
For a more a lesser note lets put it this way. mesmers have clones and teleports we have spirit weapons and teleports, warriors have heavy armor and high burst while we have heavy armor and great sustained damage so we wont have to worry about damage drop off after a burst attack. WE DO NOT BURST LIKE MESMERS AND WARRIORS….. i put that in caps as a note we can do burst damage and its been shown and proven to be great burst but we cant drop a guy for 17k damage with our greatsword its just not going to happen.

All in all this class is a jack of all trades so picking up guardian you wont be making a mistake unless you like to be at ranged then idk maybe you might want to wait for the patch to see if they gave us something in the range department otherwise I think one of the best classes in the game. =]

Hammer vs GS

Personally I like Greatsword it has great mobility, a blind, great damage, retaliation and condition removal with light fields, and 2 gap closers. i use it with a sword an focus secondary since my build is pretty aggressive and i need the movement from both and they compliment well with my play style WvW or PvE.

The hammer has its uses though and does hit pretty hard and the auto attack chain procs a protection symbol which is good for defense thanks to the 33% damage reduction it provides. the other skills with the hammer are situational though i mean you can use skill #5 to block a door or trap someone so your team can focus fire and skill #3 to immobilize someone so the CC is great but I feel greatsword does so much more for me then the hammer.

I say go to loj and help them rebuild their numbers. It’s a shame what happened to them with all the server hopper poopooheads. Bring some friends too and help out a server that got screwed by the free xfer/paid announcement bullkitten.

Going to talk to my guild about transferring their. its only 5 of us and we all started on maguuma since launch and we loved it ive been torn between yaks bend and IoJ since everytime we face yaks bend they are all good sports and ive had some good fights 1v1 or 5v5 small groups, but maybe IoJ I want to help them rebuild because thats just messed up. I love maguuma and even said in a post I planned on staying there to stick it out from all the free transfers but after sitting for about a good 2hrs waiting for the queue to pop i just want my old wvw back with close fights and good people and less zerg balling.

Its not that no one form IoJ is playing its just that from what i heard most WvW guilds and other people jumped ship and server transferred to either one of the top servers (good luck to them with all the inflation of people heading to those) or other mid servers due to them not wanting to lose. Im from Maguuma myself started there and will continue to stay there but i noticed we have gotten alot of new faces to the server as well

Since coming from gw1 to this game I do miss this kind of thing a lot but the way the game is made that wouldn’t work because now all the professions are really unique as it is. I believe they just need to add more weapon skills to the weapons we have like each weapon gets 5 new skills to mess with that way we can start sloting new moves and not being so much the same. Then maybe start merging over the underwater weapons like spear and trident and bring them to land or make some of their abilities work with weapons that we already have that to me would be the best bet.

I’m using knights gear and a berzerkers chest and runes of soldier and OK cool I dropped my hammer for a bit but I always have one in my bag so I’ll give it a shot and I’m simple things or I feel as simple is theifs and other players who seem to not really be trying much. And if 3000 is baseline armour I’ll try to mess around with my armour again and bring it back up I don’t think I need all the crit damage anyway 80 crit damage seems a little too high

Hey everyone ive trying to come up with a build that has the best of both worlds of survival and damage I feel like im on to something but I just keep dying from the simplest of things. Maybe its a skill issue on my part and maybe I need to learn to play but maybe someone can help me out it will help if i have other minds helping me work on this so I can hear different opinions to help me make this build work.

Here are my stats and i have with a 78 crit dmg rating and both weapons with sigil of accuracy to help pump out more damage

current traits Blind Exposure, Purity, Ret Armor, AH, Superior Aria, Empowering Might, Inspired Virtues

Maybe I need to take some crit damage out inplace of toughness or vitality idk but any help will be greatly appreciated its just getting super frustrating trying to figure this out.

Hammer builds still viable?

AH is still good and if you use hammer and empowering might with it the change isn’t to bad. We are all just upset to the fact it was a change that fixed nothing of our problems and only dampened our class mechanic with boons a bit. Hammer + AH+ light and fire fields is still a good source of healing put out to you and others around you. With the change you can Dodge more so there is something to look at and with selfless dareing you can get heals from it more.

After my little rant on the forum I took some time to testing things I still love AH and I run with a group of friends in wvw and pve so it helps with the healing even after the nerf I found the using a symbol to heal plus AH and dodges I can get some healing out of it to keep me up a bit even running solo and with the spread of boons to allies im still great. Just wish they actual test stuff before nerfing or at least have a test server so we can test it for them before putting the patch live. With that and maybe adding the addition of dev notes explaining things it will calm the community down for every class with the active communication and help make sure bugs and changes are fixed accordingly relating to skills and traits.

We’re nowhere near pidgen-holed. I honestly do not understand where all of this nerf QQing is coming from. We’ve hardly changed.

Did you read what the post said? it isnt QQ its an observation now look at the build that you have been using is it a Monks Focus or an AH build? those right now are the best 2 traits we have and in almost every single build I have seen one of those traits are the main focus in both PvE and PvP. Im saying we need more choice and like someone said earlier in the thread maybe its me wanting the game to progress faster to my liking but the lack of customization i had back in the first concerns me. We do need a test server for new updates so we can see what works and what doesnt that will also help to devs fix traits that are bugged and not working as intended and with our class tree we know there are a few that are messed up atm.

Really guys? You maybe lost a few hundred HP in heals. If you can’t survive without depending on that – you need to roll a new class anyway. It’s really not a big deal. Still able to play a front-line guard in WvW without noticing any difference -.-

Thats not the point at all the point is it was changed for no reason we get it we can survive without it and we will adapt but the few points of healing we lost isnt what this whole thread is about

I get what you are saying but I just feel that with the changes made even though we are i guess still the same it feels like nothing is given back as an alternative and the customization is lacking a bit you listed 4 pretty good ways to go about it but but still from the first game i am use to the endless possibilities that made guild wars unique. I still love this game dearly but just the changes without explanation is what im worried about and the lack of use from some if not half of the traits is concerning. I want every option that my class has open for me not just a few to make one out of the 4 builds that are good.

And the traits that effect downstate and fall damage im not going to take because of more useful ones in the tree and me dying and respawning with full health is more benificail than being downed and coming back with 10% health (i mainly play with some co workers so thats the reasoning)

OK so the patch notes have dropped and there are some interesting and some heart breaking changes made to us as a class but this is me venting a bit to the community so please humor me for a second (beware might be a wall of text since I’m on my phone posting). I came from guild wars 1 like most of you all and I played a dervish and loved it the class mechanics in the game were great and cross class combos to cover up the weaknesses of your primary class was great it was new and different and exciting and made making builds that were viable in pve and pvp possible and endless with all the customization and creativity a person can have to fit how THEY played. It required you to think a little more on choices since you had so many and it broke away from the cookie cutter mmo that was out. When things were nerfed and buffed no one really complained they adapted thanks to all the choices you had at your finger tips your mind went back to work finding a new way to play how you wish and it was and still is a great game.

Now guild wars 2 was announced and we were all excited to seeing our old love come back new and fresh and again like most people here we pre purchased it and beta tested the heck out of it so we can get a taste of the new new that’s coming for us. I picked a guardian due to the fact that I played a dervish in the first game and knowing that it wasn’t coming back in this one and that this game is different that the first I made a guardian due to it being the closest thing to my old class that I had and I was not disappointed at all I found another class I love. Beta had its ups and downs and since it was beta it had a ton of fixes but I still loved the guardian and still do and still remembering guild wars 1 I was excited to seeing how many different builds I can make with this new character especially when I saw the zeal line for the first time the last trait with great sword attacks healing me reminded me of my dervish since it use to do that too I was stoked.

Launch came and now we are here after a few patches and weird changes though not build breaking or classes ruining I realize there arnt as many options as I thought there were. This isn’t just for guardian but for every class between lack of interchangeable weapon skills(not utilities), weapons that don’t see a fix (scepter 1 skill, ring of warding not being used while moving slowly, torch in general ect), and traits or whole trait lines not being useful at all ( zeal line almost as a whole, zealous blade healing for 25 lol, and fall damage and down state reduction traits ect) we are pigeon hold it seems to follow a fotm build to be viable sometimes and maybe I’m over reacting a bit and please correct me if I am but that worries me the constant stream of fixes that anet does and nerfs and changes that they do don’t seem to have any reason behind them. They change and don’t give any other option they just change and then move on saying good luck. They need to seriously look at this class and every other class and look at the traits we all have and give us more things to play with and get rid of the uselessness in the traits. I’m not going to be falling or jumping off cliffs all the time, if I’m downed I want to die so I can respawn and com back to the fight, I want all the trait trees to have appeal so I can seriously look at and make a good choice on what is right for me. I don’t is that to much to ask for in a game the is all about play style choice? I get giving up something to do something else but how can I give up something if you didn’t give me anything to begin with?

Again sorry needed to vent a bit and again correct me if I’m over reacting or coming off as chicken little screaming sky fall but that’s just how I feel at the moment. Thanks for reading my little rant.

AH build or Monks Focus build?

What's a Good Amount of Armor

From what I’ve seen other guardians have is around 2800-3000 armor as the middle ground I’m shooting for 3000 myself since I feel I’ll be able to not fold like a wet napkin but not hit like a wet noodle. As you gain toughness with traits you can increase your crit% and armor killing 2 birds with one stone

Healing power and AH

I was just wondering how much healing power is needed to make AH worth while? Im starting to try out the build after reading so much about it and currently have 300 healing power thanks to traits and the 73 healing I get for each boon is nice but feel I’m doing something wrong.I want to make is so I can have the heals keep coming in and keep me up even when I’m by myself and the 73 heals arnt doing that. Maybe I’m playing it wrong but help will be greatly appreciated from the people who know a lot more about this than I do

Only a few viable builds... lacking variety?

I agree this game compared to gw1 is lacking a lot of viable build options. I think they need to change some of our more useless traits and skills not just for this class but for all classes and later in the future and some new skills to the weapons so we can swap those out so when a guardian runs into another guardian and they both have a great sword they aren’t the same. Also let us use the racial abilities in pvp I mean they are meant to add flavor to a race so why don’t they just let them? I don’t want them to tell me its a balance thing cuz then that seems like a lazy answer to a simple question.
