So I tried Wildstar and I missed playing GW2

Really? I’ve had the exact opposite experience. Never have I seen a game rip you off more than GW2. I mean $100 a month on average to access all the games content… I’d gladly pay a pitiful $15 a month for the same privilege with the added bonus of the devs not purposefully designing inconveniences into the game to sell you stuff.

I’m inclined to agree. GW2, from day one, has always made me conscious of how little gold I have, how few goodies I can afford, and how I continuously need to pay for “convenience” items that usually come standard with a P2P MMO (like sufficient character slots & inventory space).

If I had purchased everything I wanted just to feel like I had an adequate account that alone would equate to $15/mo. over the past year not even including any vanity items.

I honestly thought I was done with the subscription model, but GW2 changed my mind. I’d rather pay the $15/mo. and save myself the anxiety. I miss actually being able to enjoy the game I’m playing without constantly worrying about whether or not the way I’m playing is making enough gold per hour.

I’m glad to see there are so many people who apparently never spend a dime on GW2. If I bought all the character slots and inventory space I get standard with a subscription game that alone would equate to $15/mo. in the gem store. Thank god I’m not a mini collector.

Also, nobody said ESO is the next big thing. They said they’re bored with GW2 and at this point other games are looking tempting. Anet’s frankly been really lucky throughout 2013 because they didn’t have any real competition, but this year they have ESO, Wildstar, and WoD. Even if those all have subs, they still offer a completely new gaming experience (less so for WoD). New races, new classes, new zones, everything you’re not getting with GW2 right now.

ESO has had kitten impressions since the first day of beta and its only been getting worse, God knows what people will be saying a month after it comes out.

Quite the opposite, actually. Soon as the NDA lifted people were actually able to voice their positive feedback as opposed to all the people saying it was trash who’d never even played it (many of whom I see in this thread).

Anyway, 10 days? There’s the WvW ‘tournament’, the feature patch isn’t out until April 15th, and then I’m guessing it’ll be another 2 weeks after that for any new PvE content. So, we’re looking at potentially May. Sounds like a lot more than 10 days of nothing to me.

ESO’s actually a really good game. I went in expecting to hate it thanks to comments like the ones in this thread only to be pleasantly surprised. Most of the ‘hate’ is purely subjective. Frankly, anyone who’s satisfied with let alone enjoyed the past year of GW2 I can understand not liking ESO. Different tastes.

Personally, I have hated almost every single aspect of the LS and having done basically everything else in the game I wanted to do I am bored. I see no expansion on the horizon, so I’ve been shopping around for other games for awhile. ESO’s basically offering me everything I’ve been missing out on in GW2 (not the least of which is decent writing), so I’m sold.

Not leagues better, but definitely better than Twilight. It’s no Silmarillion, but neither is it as much trash as people want to claim.

It still beats Factions.

Never played Factions. Agree to disagree about the rest though. I’d actually place LS around the same level as reality TV. A loose script, a contrived coupling for drama, an over the top ‘villain’ everyone’s supposed to hate, and a ton of filler to extend each ‘episode’.

Frankly, I found most of it insulting. It’s insulting that someone was actually paid (and not fired) for this writing. It’s insulting that Anet hyped up every release as if it was going to be something mind blowing (when it was shallow and predictable).

That about sums up how I feel about the LS: a year-long, bi-monthly offense to both my intelligence and my cultural taste level. It was so profoundly bad I still find myself in disbelief that TPTB thought even presenting this tripe to the audience was acceptable. Other than that, there’s not much I can say that hasn’t already been said.

The only exceptions were SAB, Zephyr Sanctum, and elements of Queen’s Pavilion.

Marjory being killed would have been a minor saving grace so of course they scrapped the idea.

Not only is the Marjory + Kasmeer “relationship” completely contrived, but Marjory is arguably the weakest written character out of all of them — and I only say that because Kasmeer seemed like she could have been interesting back in her Southsun days before they dumbed her down to being ’Jory’s trophy girlfriend.

Don’t get me wrong, Scarlet was the worst villain I have ever seen in a game. But a bit more knowledge of her motivation might have been the saving grace for her existence.

Now this ending is just bad. She could have been devoured by the dragon she released. Or burned trapped in her ship (my hope for the final really), but no, she get’s a mercyful instagib without story.

That is not how a good story is told or ends. This is just lazy.

Agreed. So far the best explanation I’ve been given is ‘dragon made me do it’, which is the shallowest route they could have gone with the writing.

Character and story development were sorely lacking throughout this entire ‘season’. I foolishly hoped for some actual depth with the finale.

Secondly, Scarlet offers up a reason. Granted it might not have been a good one, but who knows. We’ll never know because Bro-ham tells her to shut-up. Well guess what Bro-ham? I wanted to know her reason.

Ditto. -_-

You know what might have been more interesting? Jory’s death. Kasmeer is already sheltered enough as it is, that she has a hard time dealing with her fathers death. This might have pushed her over the edge, made her a darker character. Set her on a path of vengeance. Something.

Yes. Normally I’m not an advocate for NPC deaths, but in this case I felt like one was needed to give one or the other of those characters some much needed depth. I preferred Marjory to die simply because prior to meeting her Kasmeer actually seemed like a character with potential.

I could have done without the Kasmeer & Marjory “romance”. Not only was it forced it frankly felt wrong and, oddly enough, I think that would have been more obvious if the Marjory character had been male. I still feel like Marjory basically took advantage of Kasmeer’s desperation and emotional vulnerability. Sorry, that’s not “romantic” to me.

The fact that we don’t learn anything new since the snippets we read from Scarlet’s journal a few updates ago was extremely disappointing. Her journal was not all telling and her motivations are still largely based in speculation. I was really looking for some more clarification, explanation, something, and instead we get Braham saying “it doesn’t matter” and that’s it. Seriously?

I’m not holding out any hope for the epilogue. I should have just accepted a long time ago that Scarlet is a shallowly written character and not expected anything more.

I really don’t like the Marjory + Kasmeer pairing. The fact that vocally Marjory sounds much older than Kasmeer, Marjory is Kasmeer’s employer, Kasmeer was in a desperate/vulnerable position when she came to Marjory, etc. It kind of seems like Marjory is taking advantage and that Kasmeer’s not really in a good emotional position (loss of father & home) to be making relationship decisions. (And yes, I’m probably adding a lot more depth to this than there actually is.) I would feel the same way if they’d made the Marjory character male, in fact, I think it would be a lot more obvious if that were the case.

Needless to say, I’m not feeling any great love here.

I’m glad you mention Tolkien with his evil overlord, who’s almost indefeatable, except for the fact that he wears his one ring of power over, instead of under his armor. And the giant, quasi-omniscient eye that this evil overlord later becomes, which has the capability to command giant orc-armies, yet for some reason leaves the only path to its destruction, that is the way up to Mount Doom, where the one ring was forged, completely ungarded.

Ugh, sorry, but this is going to bug me.

Sauron’s actually been defeated multiple times. By the time of Lord of the Rings he didn’t even have a corporeal form thanks to his previous defeat and (kind of like Voldemort now that I think about it) existed mostly because so much of his essence had been transferred into the One Ring. That’s the reason why the ring itself had to be destroyed because as long as it existed Sauron could never really die.

Also, the finger the ring was on was cut from Sauron’s hand, so even if he’d worn it under the armor he still would have lost it.

Others already addressed the Mount Doom part. :P I’ll only add that if Sauron hadn’t fallen for Gandalf & Aragorn’s ruse that Frodo never would have made it to the mountain top.

Side note: Sauron also started out as an Ainur, which is basically Tolkien’s equivalent of an angel. Last I checked, Scarlet is not supposed to be above the mortal races of Tyria.

Point being, if you actually know your Tolkien lore a great deal of suspension of disbelief was not necessary for the character of Sauron.

If even a fraction of Sauron’s story existed for Scarlet she might not suck so much. -_-

I just wish we could get some metrics on how many people are actually enjoying ( not just playing, but actually enjoying) Living Story. If Living Story is such a success, then prove it to us. Show us the overwhelming support for it. If not — and the majority of players do not want Living Story — then admit you made a mistake and put an end to it. Stop trying to shove it at us whether we want it or not.

I won’t hold my breath, though. ANet loves to seek feedback, but seldom admits to making mistakes and rarely changes direction once they’ve committed to a course of action, no matter what their customers say. Sure, they will incorporate player suggestions whenever possible, but not to the point of reversing something they had already planned.

They seem to be pretty convinced that Living Story is what the players want. For their sake, I hope they’re right. Because I’m sure I’m not the only one who never looks back after they’ve decided to leave a game for good.

Agreed.

Living Story was a good idea, just very poorly executed. There isn’t enough variety in it. SAB and two holiday patches are really the only breaks we’ve gotten from the main story arc (which has been very poor). The 2-week schedule, the temporary content, the shallowness of each update, etc. it’s finally gotten to me.

LS is not what has kept me playing. The fact that I am an altoholic who loves map completion has. (Though admittedly I have participated in almost every LS update solely for the achievement points.) But now I have an 80 of every class, multiple characters with 100% map completion, got my 10k achievement chest (so the ‘carrot on a stick’ to even do LS for achievement points is gone) and since then I’ve found myself to be very bored.

GW2 didn’t have much competition in 2013, but 2014 has at least 3 MMOs I’m interested in and with only these paltry LS updates and no expansion planned I can’t see GW2 holding my interest much longer. Like you, once I quit an MMO I don’t go back either.

They completely failed from my POV. I feel totally apathetic towards whatever happens with Scarlet, I just don’t want to have to deal with her anymore. We kill her or she joins us, I don’t care as long as we move on from this atrocity.

Emotionally, I have not been moved by a character within a game. If, in fact, they were trying to get the players to hate Scarlet based on poor writing and presentation then that is absolutely terrible and means their writing is even worse than anyone should even have to comprehend. Although, yes, I suppose they succeeded at that.

Yeah, this is the same for me. However I’m getting close to zero willpower even when it comes to that. I logged on today, got the patch mail. Just felt like “good thing I have time to deal with this later”… Not exactly what one foresaw when looking forward to playing GW2 for such a long time.

Same. The 10k achievement chest was the ‘carrot on a stick’ for me and since I’ve gotten that I’ve lost most of my motivation to continue.

I had zero plans to participate in this patch until I noticed they annoyingly made the meta reward another instance node, so now I’m torn since I’m guessing this is a ‘one time only’ thing. Meh. I think they did that on purpose to get more people to play bad content. :P

Give LS Finale a Chance

It was packed for the wrong reasons. The majority of the player base, even mildly interested in AP accumulation, were forced to go in there and participate. I hardly enjoyed it, but considering the truckload of achievement points I would’ve otherwise missed, it would put my other efforts related to AP accumulation to shame. It’s sad when a game starts to become about achievements, but let’s face it, most of the LS zerging was sadly only about just that…

Not to mention that, at the time, no one knew what the chest reward for completing the S1 WvW meta achievement was. I highly suspect if people had known that not so many would have bothered, achievement points or not.

Regardless, LS is the single best method of acquiring achievement points, which is the main reason I participate in it. It’s certainly not because I enjoy the content. The writing is atrocious and the activities are not even remotely quantifiable as “fun” for the most part.

Unfortunately, I’m betting for every player like myself with 100% LS participation Anet sees a success and thus no reason to change the status quo.

in Living World

I’m convinced Anet only looks at their metrics and not the reasons behind them. Take me, for example. I have 100% completion for nearly every LS update released, so I’m sure on paper it looks like I enjoy them. The reality is I have disliked the vast majority of the LS updates. (The writing is terrible, the objectives aren’t fun, etc.) I do it because it’s the single best way to grind achievement points (they’re like bi-monthly dailies), which in turn earn my account nice bonuses. Were it not for that (coupled with there being nothing else new to do), I honestly would not participate in at least 75% of what they’ve released.

There are always those that say they can’t stand the chatter (too dumb to use volume adjust or mute) or that you should be able to lead with just map chat (because fighting and typing 60 wpm is normal for commanders, right?)

‘Stack on me’, or ‘zerg going to Hills wurm gate’ doesn’t exactly require 60wpm.

It’s not “dumb”, it’s tedious. Personally speaking, I do not have a set schedule. Sometimes I log in NA prime time, sometimes EU, sometimes SEA, sometimes Oceanic, it varies. So, we’re talking about potentially an entirely new group of people in TS every time I play. I will then more than likely (at least based on previous experiences) spend the next hour or two of my gaming time frequently alt+tabbing to hunt and peck for every person who is a problem, whether their mic is too loud, if I want to mute them, etc.

Turning WvW into a minigame of alt+tabbing to play whack-a-mole on TS is not a reasonable expectation.

I also think it’s a lot to ask of a “casual” to d/l & install a program for one aspect of one game when they may not be that serious about WvW or have any use for TS outside of WvW.

My server has a commander who insists on using TS to the extent of not relaying any information in map/team chat. The result is every time he decides to fall back, WP, switch maps, etc. half the zerg is lost. I don’t see how that helps anything either.

Sure, I could spend a several hours with a small group flipping those, but for what purpose? Those camps are only helpful in battle in certain situations. I’d rather actually be playing WvW, not fighting NPCs.

I learned the hard way that you can’t easily flip the merc camps. Since I never usually bother with them I didn’t realize each one had an event to complete before you could work on being friendly with them.

Even then, a few of us on my server yesterday were talking about trying to get as many done as possible before reset, but after the 3 of them were capped neither of our opponents ever tried to take them so what could we do?

Also, words cannot express my abject hatred of the toxic alliance BS being put in the middle of all this for basically the entire season. Way to make an already ridiculous achievement “hard mode” by littering the area with tightly packed veterans, elites, semi-permanent DoT damage, etc.

Not to mention all of the yaks the toxics they placed along the roads killed, making that achievement all the more tedious than it already was.

I don’t run with zergs, so getting the rank up achievement was all reliant on me getting kills/taking camps/sentries/etc. by myself. That’s why most roamers don’t even have guard stacks yet. That achievement is really hard to get the real way for somebody who doesn’t zerg. That one was one of those I feel like if I didn’t play as often as I did, I may not have gotten it.

I had the opposite problem. I almost predominantly zerg, I don’t enjoy roaming at all. Unfortunately, to complete this meta I had to do quite a bit of roaming because getting yaks and sentries, in particular, are extremely difficult in a zerg if you straggle behind even a little bit (not hard to do if you don’t have perma-swiftness).

I also never do ruins, so I had to solo all 50 of those during off-peak times. While not particularly difficult (at least I rarely ran into anyone else), it was not fun at all and completely unrewarding outside of the achievement itself.

The only reason I got Demolition Expert is because my server’s been awesome about letting people who didn’t have the achievement on siege, normally I don’t man siege at all.

It’s actually harder for the stacked winning server to complete the meta, than it is for the underdogs. Especially, since the underdogs will have a couple slightly more balanced matches, while the winning server will only have blowouts.

Granted, yes, on my server we did have at least 2 weeks of matchups where we were able to accomplish something other than being camped at our spawn. However, that also meant having to complete a meta achievement in 1/3 of the intended time frame, which is partially why you see a lot of people complaining about the high values associated with those achievements.

I am not against these avhievs. I am against the number of targets. An average player who plays in the evenings have no time to do it all “in the process.” He forced to focus specifically on this to complete. This imposing of play style allready.

And yet someone that actually plays WvW more than for just the season one achievements would have done more than enough of those to have completed the meta in the 7 weeks it was possible without even trying.

I disagree. I spend what I consider a decent amount of time in WvW, at least ~20 hours a week usually, and I’m 5/50 on merc camps, am only halfway through sentries, had to actively spend a few hours literally doing nothing but farming dolyaks, and begrudgingly had to join the ranks of those who “wasted” supply for the repair achievement.

These things are highly dependent on your playstyle, the servers you’re matched against, and the times of day you play. Personally, I found there were only about 3 weeks out of the 7 where I was able to accomplish very much. It really made me wish those achievement values were halved at the least.

However, I think even knowing what we knew then, having 4 leagues in NA consisting of BG/JQ/SoR in their own league. (May have prevented SoR falling the way they have.) Then:

TC, SoS, Mag, FA, SBI, DB
Yaks, BP, Ebay, CD, IoJ, NSP
HoD, Kain, SF, FC, DH, ET, DR, GoM, AR

would have been better than what we got.

Well, I think there should have been 4 leagues, but those are not quite the servers I would have matched. I suppose I can still agree that it would be better than what actually happened though.

Obviously, people have had a different experience playing CD, IoJ, and NSP than I have in Silver league during this season. Honestly, I would have put all 3 of those in the ‘Bronze’ league. I really don’t think any of them are on par with the population/coverage of BP, EB, and definitely not YB, but I do think against DH, HoD, and possibly SF there could have been some very interesting matches.

My pick would be something like:

1: SoR, BG, JQ, TC, FA, Mag
2: SBI, YB, BP, EB, SoS, DB
3: CD, IoJ, NSP, HoD, DH, SF
4: Kain, FC, ET, DR, GoM, AR

And here’s the bottomline: “The Season 1 is a failure overall”. Do you agree?

Yes.

The league/matchmaking system was/is extremely flawed. I can only hope that next time they’ll increase the leagues to 4 and use the data from this season to better match the servers in season 2.

That said, I think the next league should be involve four leagues:
Platinum – BG, JQ, SoR
Gold: TC, SoS, Mag, FA, SBI, YB
Silver: DB, BP, EB, CD, and two of NSP, IoJ, HoD depending on their rating post-season 1
Bronze: Everyone not listed above

This would probably lead to a more balanced experience for all parties involved.

Everyone else is relatively close in coverage, or close enough so as to prevent the kind of obscene blowouts that destroy morale and stop people from playing matchups.

While I agree there should be 4 leagues, I don’t agree (based both on experiences and overall matchup results for the season) that CD, NSP, or IoJ belong in the same league as the others you have listed for silver.

If I were going to do leagues it’d be more like:

League 1:

Blackgate
Jade Quarry
Sanctum of Rall
Tarnished Coast
Fort Aspenwood
Maguuma

League 2:

Dragonbrand
Sea of Sorrows
Stormbluff Isle
Borlis Pass
Emhry Bay
Yak’s Bend

League 3:

Henge of Denravi
Darkhaven
Crystal Desert
Isle of Janthir
Northern Shiverpeaks
Sorrow’s Furnace

League 4:

Ferguson’s Crossing
Gates of Madness
Kaineng
Anvil Rock
Devona’s Rest
Eredon Terrace

Even that is not going to guarantee ideally balanced matchups, but it would certainly be a lot better than what’s occurred thus far in S1, IMO.

How would you rate this update?

0/10 because I don’t like fractals and won’t be doing any of it.

This. Plus the fact that the one fractal I was looking forward to due to lore they used as another Scarlet vessel, which makes it even more fail.

League: Silver
Enjoyed Season 1: No.
Should we have a Season 2: Not without changes.

First of all, I fully believe there should be a 4th league where each league is divided by 6 servers. I do not feel that (no offense, but…) NSP, IoJ, or CD really belonged in Silver, not against servers like SBI and DB, etc. (FA should have been in Gold, IMO.) Near as I can tell, all of those servers have struggled if not outright been decimated in more than half of their matchups this season. However, I also don’t believe the bottom 6 servers would stand much of a chance against the 3 I’d knock down to Bronze, hence a 4th league.

Some other comments I agreed with:

“If anything that does more harm than good to communities and promotes the “Why should I go out and play if I’m only going ot get face rolled” mentality. I’d imagine this is even worse for the low ranked siver and bronze servers that have yet to win a match.”

This is what happened to my server. Contrary to the belief that the season brought more people to WvW, we lost a lot of participation because we were being crushed so badly by opponents that should have been out of our league. It’s been very demoralizing and has really hurt our already fragile WvW population.

“One good example of this was in week 2 I think, when we were trying to hold garrison and we had solo players robbing the place of supply just to get the achievment.”

The repair achievement was the most self-detrimental one in the bunch. Upgrading SMC in particular was an exercise in frustration because people would drain the supply repairing walls that were continuously taking treb damage. I would rather not see this achievement next time.

“Sentry and yak ones were way too many and too dependent on the other side. I think those ones, especially the yak killer one encouraged bad behavior.
You would be better off to not flip a camp back and lurk around to wait for yaks to spawn.”

I surprisingly thought most of the achievements were set to reasonable amounts, but sentries, yaks, and mercenary camps seemed very unrealistic, especially if you don’t solo roam or run havoc groups getting those achievements would be approaching the impossible.

The only way I got the yak achievement was by camping enemy camps, which meant not flipping them, which also seems counterproductive to the overall WvW effort. I was lucky in that due to being on a bottom of the totem pole server the enemy BL camps were rarely ever flipped and didn’t pay attention to their dolyaks.

Sentries & merc camps are just not happening. Those amounts should be readjusted, IMO.
