Will using the Sword/Dagger combo seriously hinder me in normal PvE activities? I really like the thematics of that style, and want to use it.
And by normal I mean pretty much just wandering the world, exploring, questing, eventing, generic stuff like that. Dungeoning isn’t high on my to-do list right now.
Yeah, they’re not too bad, might buy a couple when I save up enough coin for a big gem buy. But still, gotta work with what I have right now.
PvE is definitely my main focus, I indulge in sPvP only when my fancy really desires it, and WvW when I’m in a fun mood. No Heart of Thorns yet either, I’m kinda waiting ’till I actually have a capped character before getting it, experience the game “properly” first, ya know?
So I’ve just started to play this game after a two and some change years of forgetting I had it. (Hey, don’t look at me, it’s easy to do so when a game’s not a constant drain on your funds!)
Since I wasn’t too high up in level (20-ish) I cleaned out my characters and started fresh. Well, as fresh as a shared bank / currency system allows. Anyhoo, so far I’ve bounced around a few characters and have had a lot of fun.
Asura Ranger – Chapter One Complete
Charr Necromancer – Chapter One Complete
Human Engineer – Chapter Two Complete
Sylvari Warrior – Chapter One Complete
That leaves my last slot for a Norn character, and for the life of me, I can’t decide between Elementalist or Mesmer. Why one of them? I absolutely LOVE Norn cutural light armor. Even if it’s not the best statted set, it’s the best looking for me for transmogging.
So, what should I put in the last slot and why?
The time has come for another Asura character. Nothing wrong with my little Ozwikk, he kicks tail as a Guardian. But I love the little Asura, and being tied to just one story is frustrating.
So I’m planning out my next little guy. Ozwikk is a Statics, and proud of it, he has faith in tried and true methods, which help lend him his Guardian powers. Since I don’t want to follow the same story, my soon to be new ranger will have to be a Dynamic or a Synergist… Synergeticist… whatever. What school do you think would be more fitting for a ranger? I’m leaning slightly more towards Dynamics, but I’m still not entirely sure.
I’m asking you for your opinions while I tackle an equally difficult decision, his name.
I actually have to agree that for surprised and sleep charr wins. Asura wins on cry. Can’t really say for other emotes than that.
When you get a moment, use the Laugh emote on an Asura. Trust me, they’ll win in that department too.
Well, it is no longer than three syllables, and it ends in a consonant, which is fitting for male Asura… as an RP name, 3/10, as a threat, 10/10.
My current Asura is a decent sized Statics Guardian with small ears called Ozwikk. He’s a little embarrassed by his small ears, so makes up for it with guts.
Have you ever used it before? If not, I dare you. Use it. And if you don’t feel like a total jerk afterwards…
You know, for Asura, no matter the gender, they love large ears.
That said, I tend to make my ears thicker, for some reason, they always seem to look better that way, more organic and less stiff.
There’s so many reasons that I chose the Asura. Their attitude, their cute evilness, the maniacal laugh, the animations, their constant curiosity and thirst for more knowledge… I could go all night.
So I just started up a Necromancer, a Sylvari, if you’re that curious. And for some reason, I got the oddest desire to mainly use an Axe. One doesn’t question these kind of things, they just go with it.
That said, I’m curious as to which off-hand weapon would best compliment the skills of an Axe. Right now, I have a Focus, and I love the amount of Vulnerability I can put on someone, and the Chill power lets me circle-strafe so easy, but how’s a Horn’s skills or a Dagger’s skills work with an Axe?
And what would you recommend for an off-set? Scepter and Off? Double Dagger for melee craziness? Staff for support?
Thanks in advance.
but from the LOOKS of them…. they are just tall humans right…
They have different body shape as well… you can find skinny humans but never a skinny norn
A skinny Norn is like a sober Norn, a crime against nature.
And here I was just thinking of staring up a Charr Engineer since I just came back to the game. Wouldn’t mind having him in a themed guild. I’d prolly play him more on the PvE end, with occasional bouts into WvW whenever the fancy gets me. I’ll edit this post when I get him made, so you know when to send me an invite.
Oh, I’m on Devona’s Rest, by the way.
In WvW I literally always target another engi first. I know how much effect a good one can cause, and I know how to kill one better than most of my team-mates. kitten yes I target them first. I think its also a “i’m a better engi” haha
Something along the lines of “My turret may look the same, but it’s barrel is 0.01mm longer than yours” ne?
I can see techies and geeks targeting each other first, bragging about their toys. Makes for good fun.
Not just a Dandelion, but a DAHN-delion.
Definitely some good chuckles in this list.
You’ll have to forgive me here, it’s been AGES since I played last. Just got back into the game, started fresh, and I can’t believe I ever left it, I don’t no why it’s so entertaining right now, but it is.
So, with the fresh restart, I made a human ranger. I’ve been playing a lot of human-based characters in Skyrim of late, so it kinda dragged over here. And I’ve been feeling like my pet isn’t this flimsy little thing like it used to be. It seems sturdier now, and a whole lot better at attacking enemies than it used to be. Heck, it can actually keep a mob’s attention now!
Or maybe that’s just me. Am I imagining things here?
Hah! That was very cute.
Male Char: http://www.gw2armor.com/charr/male/heavy_list.php
Female Char: http://www.gw2armor.com/charr/female/heavy_list.php
It’s because char are demon-cats. Notice how demon comes first. The cat part is relegated as secondary. And as we all know, demons don’t land on their paws when you push them off a cliff.
Besides, all char have a hidden charzooka and pistol somewhere on their body, that really messes up their balance. Kinda hard to land properly when your… “big gun” is pulling you around.
This thread is pure gold. Keep the ahem lols coming, and soon we can start our own site, lolchar.
My very first character I ever made in Guild Wars 2 was an Asura. I’m a former-ish WoW Player (only taking a break because of money issues,) and I have always enjoyed the smaller races, which is an odd thing, considering how tall I am in the real world. When deciding what to make, I noticed how much smaller the Asura were compared to the others in the character select screen, and the rest is history.
While I have come to enjoy the other races, especially the Silvari, the Asura will always hold a special place in my heart for their egotistic and energetic personalities, along with their diminutive size.
Maybe it’s time I got back into one. Hmm… what to make…
Topic title asks it all. I’m planning on starting up an Elementalist soon, and for some odd reason that I can’t explain, I want him to be a Charr. Now a LONG time ago, I asked your opinions on which Legion a Guardian Charr would belong to, but as I cleaned my slate completely after coming back to the game from a LONG time of not playing, I have next-to-no characters now.
So tell me, which of the playable Legions do you believe an Elementalist would belong to?
Blood Legion – Especially a Dual-Dagger Elementalist, up-close and personal.
Ash Legion – Where magical subterfuge seems to be a little more welcomed.
Iron Legion – Where my flames temper steel and the very earth hammers it down.
Personally, I’m leaning towards Blood, whether or not I main dual Daggers, but I’m curious to see your opinions and ideas.
If she wasn’t Egotistical, she wouldn’t be an Asura, now would she?
Any bookah could have ascertained such a infinitesimally intellectual inference and needed to squander precious seconds with the self-evident. exasperated exhalation
That has to be the BEST insult someone has ever slung my way. It was so good, that I couldn’t feel angry at it. Well done.
Long time no see, a-net forums.
So I just got back into the game after canceling a lot of my other subscription based things (like Xbox Live Gold and WoW,) and I decided to start fresh. Completely. Even meant cleaning out my bank and wiping my characters. Every now and then you gotta do something like that.
So I decided to start up a Sylvari, the race I was probably most attracted to the last time I played. I went chose Warrior, since I’ve grown used to melee combat in various other games, but I had to stop and think about what birth cycle I wanted, even though it has so little impact on one’s character.
In the end, I decided to go with the Noon cycle. While I personally may be more secretive and lonely, I do prefer to face down any challenge I see and attack it head-on. Figuratively, of course, they kinda frown upon beating someone over the head with a book when they do something stupid. Plus, there’s nothing in the Noon’s description that says a Sylvari born then can’t be a bit more solitary. I think it’s a perfect fit for me.
So, what’s your Sylvari’s birth cycle? Did you choose it because of your class, your class because of it, or was there a deeper meaning? Lemme know.
I’m no expert, but I’ll gladly throw in my two-cents as well for a new player, especially since I was one not that long ago, so I know how it feels!
This game is based on avoiding attacks more often than straight-out absorbing them, yes, that means even as a heavy-armored Warrior. Sure, you can get a few more hits in, but you’ll also take a few, don’t forget to stay on your toes, especially in melee combat.
Almost all professions can hold two weapon sets, and switch between them in combat. As a Warrior though, you have access to a LOT of weapons. You’ll always want a high-damage weapon set (like the brutal Axe-Axe or powerful Greatsword,) a defensive set (Mace & Shield is my favorite,) on your quick-switch, unless the situation ahead calls for something different. For said situations, you should keep a ranged weapon (Long Bow or Rifle, or both!) in your inventory, and a Warhorn for some extra group utility as well. Make sure you get as much practice with EVERY weapon combo, find a few that work best for you, but don’t forget about the rest!
While crafting may not be 100% useful as you level, don’t over-look gathering. You can gather from all resource nodes (plants, trees and ores,) as well as use Salvage Kits on equipment whether or not you have a crafting trade. And you can easily store them in a special part of your personal bank called “Collectibles,” so even if you don’t end up making use of what you just hunted down on that character whenever you get around to crafting, it’ll still be there for any future alts! Account-based banking is super handy.
I’ll call it it for now, a lot of this game comes to you simply as you play, so fart around some (yes, that’s a technical term,) and enjoy yourself. Having fun is the point of a video game, after all.
If she wasn’t Egotistical, she wouldn’t be an Asura, now would she?
So I was reading the Asura forums, and they had a little topic about an Asura only guild, and Tarnished Coast came up as a place full of racially themed guilds and role play.
Now I’ve been on Devrona’s Rest since the start, chose the name completely at random, and I haven’t moved once yet. But the RPer in me from some of the other MMOs I’ve played is starting to kick in, and I’m looking for a place that has some decent Role Play going on. Anyone care to help?
You can still be a thief and be ranged in this game, either with a short bow or dual pistols. And if you don’t like ranged combat, a quick switch to double daggers or sword/daggers and you have a very powerful, if fragile, melee character.
We really don’t have much of a “Holy Trinity” here in this game, a character, no matter the profession, and be pretty much built however you want it. Sure it might be a bit of a long stretch for some, but it can be done.
Here’s my latest Asura, Quzzil. I’m quite proud of him. He’ll make it to the level cap.
He’s a Guardian. Decided to take a screen in his town clothes, there was some clipping issues with his helmet.
Doesn’t he look so cute?
Sounds like someone I don’t want to get mad. Might bend me and half.
My Norn Elementalist is Rodmar Toffasson. I went with the “child of -” last name for my Norn. Just seemed more fitting.
Decided in the end to go with an Elementalist, mostly due to the fact it’s a more “active” class, with all the “stance dancing” you have to do. Also easier to keep track of your stances and effect without having to worry about clones.
Their attitude mostly. It’s not about HOW you did something, only that you DID do it. That appeals to me. Combine that with the cold of their native lands (I’m a freak, I love snow and winter,) their large size (not just muscular, but large,) and some of the most epic beards available in a video game short of a Dwarf’s, and they are quite appealing to me.
Plus, I also find their whole Animal Spirit worship to be quite interesting.
I’d give it a 9.5 outta 10, Weindrasi. Good little story there too.
I have a Charr Warrior with the name Glork Snowlicker, which apparently fooled a couple of people, they thought I was an NPC, heh…
No big story on his last name. When younger, and out on a training mission with his fahrar, he was thirsty, and randomly decided to lick up some snow to clench his thirst. He was picked on for a while because of this, and given Snowlicker as a nickname. As he got older, he took it as a thing of pride.
So I’ve been playing around some more, and have started getting into World vs. World. I wanna make a character that I can focus on it with, both to keep my characters SOMEWHAT separated, and for RP Story reasons. Decided to go with one of the casters, Elementalist, Necromancer or Mesmer, but haven’t quite figured out which.
Which would you recommend? I’m would rather be a bit more supportive, either through booning or conditioning, though I won’t say no to just killing things. Me dying every few minutes wouldn’t phase me either, I find WvW oddly enjoyable, no matter how badly I’m doing at the moment.
Are Asura evil? They’re small, cute, and “harmless looking.” Of course they’re evil, and they know it too.
Is it wrong that I'm considering deleting all of my characters

Nothing wrong with it at all.
After all, we will all serve the Asura, in the end.
I’ve had mine scream as he’s jumped over an object. I think the “fall height” detector that starts your character screaming when he reaches the point of death from falling is bugged.
Did you maybe accidentally turn on the Quick Ground Targeting option, where your current mouse pointer location is where the AoE effect is launch, which may be pointing at a spot that is too far away to successfully fire the skill?
I’ve done that a few times on some characters.
Thanks for the first post Magoslich. That was rather deep and thought provoking. Gonna have to give this a tad more think-time.
Title says it all. Which Legion do you think a Guardian fits best into?
- The Blood Legion: Because they’re at the front lines, always. (Figuratively, of course.)
- The Ash Legion: Because they need to keep their faith secret?
- The Iron Legion: Because their faith is in technology.
What do you think? Going to be starting up a Charr Guardian soon, so would like the forumites input.
I personally think that Charr Guardian Retreat needs changing

“Strategic advance to the rear!”
I prefer “Strategic advance towards future victory!”
Now I know, some people have a tendency to get foul. And yes, we do have some younger players who may read these forums. But I have to ask, why do you think “kitten” was chosen to bleep out the words?
Not complaining, really. In fact, the way kitten pops in now and then actually makes the sentence quite funny.
So… any clue anyone? Or any particular reason Anet people?
Hmm… I might have to give this a look. I’ll admit, circle strafing would be so much easier if I wasn’t lifting the mouse and moving it every few seconds. That get’s hard on my poor little mouse after a few PvP matches.
1) This is a mobile game. Nearly everything (note: I said NEARLY,) can be cast/swung/shot on the run. While there are times you can stand there and attack like crazy (either do to your strong gear, your super health pool, or you have some poor meat bag being spanked in front of you,) you should always be ready to dodge.
***1a)Circle Strafing is your friend. This technique is about running a circle around your preferred target, constantly being able to attack them, but yet remain outside of their attack capabilities. This is more effective in PvE, as the monster will always go the same direction. Human controlled characters can switch up on you, so make sure you’re ready to throw in a dodge or change directions yourself.
2)THERE IS NO KILL STEALING! Lemme say that again. THERE. IS. NO. KILL. STEALING!!!!! You see a mob you need to kill? Kill it! Someone else already spanked it? KILL IT ANYWAYS! You’ll still get the Experience and quest credit for killing it.
3)THERE IS NO LOOT-NINJAING! All looting, including crafting material gathering, is done on a CLIENT SIDE basis, not a server side. If you see something loot-able, it’s for you and you alone, though naturally, you can trade or sell it on the trading market, if you so desire.
4)This game rewards team play. See someone killed? If the mob is still agroing, kill it, then REVIVE the other player/npc. Every class can revive another character, whether in combat or out, WITH NO COOLDOWN. You even get some nice, tasty experience for helping out the poor sod.
5)Weapon skills are your primary form of killing something. Weapon skills are learned as you kill something. So don’t waste your time learning weapon skills on something that takes a while to kill, find weaker mobs and slaughter them. Also note, even though many weapons are shared among the professions, NO TWO PROFESSIONS USE WEAPONS IN THE SAME WAY.
6)While we’re on skills, no you don’t need to go to a trainer every x levels to learn new skills. You learn them yourself, wherever you are. Weapon skills are free, but you cannot change them without switching to another weapon all together. Your “Slot Skills”, by default, numbers 6 through 0, require the use of Skill Points you gain as you level, and as you complete certain challenges. You can learn these whenever you have a moment to stop and catch your breath. I wouldn’t recommend opening the Hero window to learn a new skill when you’re in the middle of an attacking horde.
7)Just because you’re 80 doesn’t mean you can go into a newbie zone and start causing Grief for other players. Why? You are DYNAMICALLY LEVELED DOWN based on the area you are in. So if you step into an area generally meant for people around level 4, you get zapped down to level 5. Sure, you’ll still have all your delicious gear, skills and traits, but you won’t just one-shot everything. This is actually a good thing, as it lets you experience other areas that you may have missed while not being COMPLETELY over-powered.
8)The reverse is also true. Don’t rush to 80 and go expected to dominate people in PvP. Why? Everyone is DYNAMICALLY LEVELED UP to 80 in “Structured PvP” or sPvP for short. And everyone gets gear a special set of gear they can use there. Sure, the starting gear is free and isn’t the greatest, but it lets one start on somewhat more equal footing.
9)World vs. World vs. World, or WvWvW or WvW is somewhat different than sPvP. While everyone is still level 80, they can gain experience to level up some more if they haven’t capped yet, but they retain whatever gear they walked in with. You’ll still be much more powerful here than they would, but you won’t get the satisfaction of ganking low-level characters. Tsk tsk… going and getting your hopes up like that.
…Okay, that’s it for me at the moment. I need to eat breakfast… then log into the game myself. Time for some more fun.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice knowing the exact damage you’re doing, but I always prefer to hide it when I can. I can immerse myself in the world a whole lot better without numbers jumping around. I can feel more a part of the story if I’m not constantly being reminded that this is, yes, a video game. Look at the pretty numbers.
And I have that big red-ish bar at the top of the screen to see how close the target is to dying anyhoo. That, at least, I can morbidly change in my head. (“Oh, looks like they’ve bled out a lot so far…”)
So, any way to hide them? If not, I’ll manage. Mostly just curious.
The imagery in some of these posts… hilarious.
But yeah, Norn have a different sense of honor and glory than most races do. It’s more personal rather than societal. Sweet jelly beans, societal is apparently a word. So a Norn Thief is perfectly acceptable, along as its a glorious occupation.
And yeah, no need to be a sneak thief. Just stab the guy, take the goods off his corpse. It still counts as stealing.
I ended up making a warrior as per random toss of the die. I’ve enjoyed it greatly so far, the weapon attacks feel powerful and the survivability is excellent.
This is why I spent like 15-20 minutes clicking that lil’ light bulb during character creation to get my glow just right. Thankfully, I have. A nice, bright green apple color that counters my nice darker, red apple color body.
And it’s also why I will always have my helm hidden.
What about “elvish” names? Sylvari are pretty much the “elves” of this game, so wouldn’t those type of names be somewhat fitting for them as well?
