These are decent counterarguments, props man! But the fact remains that you have the Queen, and she has a lot of power, with a little manipulation, she could have nearly absolute power. She and her right hand lady are two of the most powerful mesmers in the world, I feel like that is something that should not be in politics, especially as the office of Queen, there is just too much going for her. A leader should never have outright control over others minds. Escalate that and an absolute leader should never have absolute power over others. Control of the mind would allow this and she is in the perfect position to use it.

I mean, she can actually influence the minds of crowds at a time, this should at least raise a little concern, even if she has a decent track record.

Some counter-counters:

You said:
“But dragon minions don’t die when their Elder Dragon dies. If you look at Arah explorable, which happens AFTER Zhaitan’s death, you’ll see the Risen are still functioning.
Also we don’t know the mechanics of the spell she cast – she may have needed a long time to prepare it, time which Logan probably brought by rallying the imprisoned Charr in Ebonhawke to fight for them. If she didn’t have that time the city might have been overrun by the Branded.”

Point taken, there are a lot of factors. But why wasn’t she using her elite guard to combat the Branded? Why didn’t she use her handmaid (who is also a powerful mesmer)? Either of these options would have bought her the same amount of time summoning Logan would have, and she would not be sacrificing the once in a lifetime chance they had to take down the dragon.

Also this:

“Considering how power hungry the Krytan Ministry is, if she died, then the nation would probably not be in a good place. I don’t know how mesmer magic works, but maybe she could only send the message, and not have a conversation with Logan about his situation. "

If the Queen needs to worry about the power hungry nature of the court she resides in, then why doesn’t she have an Heir? If she were to die without an Heir it is likely the remaining royalty will tear the country apart with the resulting power struggle. She cannot be ignorant of this, she is the Queen after all. So why no Heir? Selfishness? A more sinister agenda? Just another thing to consider.

If she needs a bodyguard, and has to go to a wandering vagrant to get one, well, she needs to prepare better.

Thanks for discussing!

The main concern here is her unrivaled power. The other stuff is kind of just theorycrafting.

I have been doing some thinking/digging on your Queen.

First of all, are you comfortable with having her in power? Have you really thought about the danger she might pose?

The queen is a mesmer of extraordinary power. That is drilled into you at every opportunity. Mesmerism is the power over others minds, and of illusion. In Destiny’s Edge, she’s able to make illusions powerful enough that the remainder of the armies of Charr and humans believed they had become branded creatures, in order to trick the actual Branded into leaving the battlefield. Also, while it’s not directly presented as her power, Logan is entranced with her the moment he sees her. This infatuation causes him to do things he would normally not do, and is the reason later he does something that is much more sinister.

Logan takes one glance at her on her balcony and then swears himself to be the queen’s personal champion, and she’s like “Okay yep, let me make a mind link in your brain so that you’ll know to come running if I’m ever in danger”. In doing so, she gains a strong and extremely loyal bodyguard, and effectively thwarts the plan to take down Kralk, which seems to work inversely in favor for her because if the dragon were to be killed, she would not have to fear, due to the fact that the minions are running off dragon power. She also could have used the mental link to communicate with Logan, however briefly, to realize that Edge of Destiny are on the brink of killing the source of their problems.
REMEMBER! She did not need Logan! She was powerful enough to turn the Charr and the Guard (Seraph, I think) into what looked like branded, causing the other branded to leave. As well as the fact that, if the dragon were to die then the branded would die as well (it’s sort of an unspoken fantasy/sci-fi rule so that you don’t have to mop up all the dragon mess afterward).

You also need to note what got EoD into the Crystal Desert in the first place.
Jennah herself had written to them (Logan) and said “turns out Glint is a dragon champion – yeah I know she’s done some really great stuff in the past, but it pains me to have to say you’re going to have to go in there and kill her, and kill her really quickly.” But as it turns out, Glint is not actually a bad dragon, the latest Living Story has proved that (as far as the tone has been set, Arena Net has basically presented her and her potential offspring as our great chance at killing Mordy.).
So this calls Jennah’s intention further into question. Did she just mistakenly call this assassination of Glint as a misplaced attempt at a good deed? I think not, just because it is too much of a deviation of tone. She has not directly acted like this before, why would she start now?

So what does this alone say about her? She is directly responsible for Logan deserting his crew and therefore the escape of Kralk. She was also nearly responsible of the elimination of Glint and the resulting unhindered rise of Kralk.

Also, while it is slightly unrelated, but certainly more of an immediate problem. Jennah is a politician who effectively has the power to control minds, as this is the base of the power of mesmers. Understand the implication of this. Can you trust her to not abuse this power? No. She is not some benevolent entity, as far as we know, she is human. Humans are all flawed, it doesn’t take a lot to see that.

Basically, keep an eye on your Queen, humans. I hope it at least concerns you that she essentially has the power over others minds. No one in a position of authority should have such power.

ps: sorry about the clickbait title, but I think this is an issue that demands attention

With the most recent update, in the hidden-ish Dormand priory library, I found a book, called Krewe Influencers. A collection of tips and tricks that helps the reader through krewe selection. Written by Florggi.

Not all tasks can be performed by krewe members. You may need “special” volunteers to further your research.
For expample, suppose your krewe has a prototype that will allow asura to fly at the speed of a Canthan firework. How are you going to test it ?
Obviously, YOU can’t test it, you are far too valuable, and krewe members can be expensive to replace. So you need a bookah.
Your average bookah (human) is very easy to manipulate with flattery and tends to enjoy going on adventures.

Well I want to rip that Florggi’s head off. In that very wrong text, there is atleast 1 right point he got, or even 2;
Asura are flattering rats.
Humans like going on adventures while asura read their books and do golems that can easyly be destroyed by a dagger.

Only a human would get upset about something like this….

Forgive me for being confused, but, it’s in the name Ranger, there should be at least one reasonable build for kiting and range, I’ll eventually end up trying melee in PvP seriously, but every time I give it a shot, I end up getting slaughtered by those classes built for melee. We might claim maneuverability, but warriors and theives can also claim that, we might claim survivability, but that is the domain of Gaurdian and Necromancers. So it’s a case of, “Anything you can do I can do better” in melee for Rangers. The only thing we have a slight advantage on is our range and speed combination, for gurella type combat. As far as I’ve seen…

I just want the Ranger’s signature weapons to work without the high skill cap they have now…

I can be viable support in a fight, and sometimes win a 1 vs 1 with varying success depending on which class I’m facing, and all of this is with me clutching my keyboard and mouse, leaning in to my screen and paying rapt attention to what’s going on around me. Usually I leave a pool of sweat below my chair and I have actually become quite toned due to my flexing and constant intense concentration. I also have burst two blood vessels in my forehead and neck respectively due to the amount of times I have been killed off hand.

An aside, I feel about three years six months younger now due to how angry I have gotten in sPvP.

So, playing Rangers, bad or good? You decide.

For heavens sake man, at least you are still a reasonably viable class with your current build! As well as quite a good class if you go with one of the others suggested here on the forum.

Please, for the sake of us all, go play a Longbow/Shortbow Ranger viably for a year and a half. Now that class, that’s the one that is complaining now, and imho, they have the right to complain.

I must put a little disclaimer, Rangers right now are really not a viable option in PvP, and hardcore PvE. They can be with a few build types, but at what should be their CPR functions (longbow/shortbow) they are rather lacking, and take a long time to learn in order to beat even casual players in many other classes. So buyer beware, in this case. Read over the Ranger profession forum and do a little research before you jump in.

This is all coming from someone who plays am Asuran Ranger from launch and i have had my moments of doubt. But to be honest, winning feels really good in sPvP because it’s really difficult, but that’s just me. I have a bit of an underdog complex and I am a slight masochist…

May I say that, as a Ranger, I rather enjoy my match ups against Thieves these days (at least the ones I see coming) and I feel that the stealth mechanic adds quite the fun “Hide and seek” aspects to the fight. I also find that these fights are an interesting see-saw of my kiting and their stealthing. So, for my two cents, I think they are quite nicely balanced.

Thank you all for some interesting and satisfying fights.

I shall also post the class sample text taken from the main website for any of you who might have forgotten.

Rangers,

Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.

Pets,

Rangers are accompanied by their pets, fierce animal companions who fight at their side. Rangers can have up to two pets at their call, and they can switch between the two animals during combat. Rangers can command their pets to attack specific targets, assign their pets a behavior mode, such as “passive” or “active,” and activate the special skill that is unique to each pet type. To recruit a pet, rangers charm juvenile animals in the wild such as giant flightless birds, loyal dogs, fierce monsters, and even undersea creatures like sharks.

Special Skills,

Traps
Rangers can punish enemies who dare to approach them with traps, skills that are placed on the ground nearby. Traps remain active as long as rangers stay nearby or until an enemy triggers it. For example, Spike Trap cripples and bleeds opponents that pass through it.

Spirits
Rangers can summon spirits of nature to their side during a battle. These powerful spirits influence the area around it. For example, Sun Spirit grants any allied attacks within range a 20% chance to cause burning.

Sounds great!

Yeah…

I must comment that the Ranger forums are the only ones on which I see complaint threads. Of that does not tell you something, well try this: only the players that care are going to be on the forums, so the excuse “Don’t be a bad Ranger” I think, wears a little thin. People are actually here because they want to be better Rangers, you will not find many of the “Bad” Rangers on the forums.

ANET, please, I just feel too powerful on the battlefields, it’s just like I go out, give my enemies that “Blue Steel” look with my longbow in hand, and all these things just start keeling over in front of me. There is no satisfactions in winning so easily all the time, how Am I supposed to win fame and glory with such an easy class?

My problem is that I go to another class and get killed right and left, and usually decide that it’s not worth it, returning to my Ranger almost immediately.

I need help.

What I think might be a little bit of a problem is, there is really no present baseline for asura faces, and how they are supposed to look. Should they look cute? Should they look old and wizened? Or something in between? Of course, thus leads to either people not caring, people looking to the NPC’s for a standard, the players setting a baseline based on personal preference, or an in-universe explanation for why the faces should look the way they do.

Regardless of how the faces “Should” look, actions speak louder than words, and what the majority ends up liking, well, that’s what is gonna end up the norm. Also, let’s be honest, the majority of players don’t read these forums, for some reason or another.

I can hold my own against many of the weaker classes, eg: eles & engies.
But, it’s rather vital that I get the drop on most others though, so I reccomend CONSTANT VIGILENCE!! In PvP, at least.

Theives/Warriors/Guardians/Necromancers/Mesmers attack first, all I really do is hit all my distance makers (dodge/shortbow 3/lightning reflexes) then I hit my longbow stealth. It usually works. Then, all I need to do is keep out of range and needle them with my longbow., hitting stealth and running when necessary, guerrilla tactics.

It works ok.

I must be honest, Rangers are completely passable in most PvE situations, in PvP, however, I have discovered that kiting with pet CC and longbow knockback, and stealth utility, including probably “Eagle Eye” for increased range to keep distance. Then use that trait that increases movement speed (which I cannot remember the name of). Along with all this, you can use your talent slots for increased damage, survivability, or increased escape options, with “Sharpening Stone”&“Quickening Zephyr”/“Signet of Toughness”&“Lightning Reflexes”/“Spike Trap”&“Frost Trap” respectively, in that order.

“Signet of the Hunt” is magnificent for kiting in general, I would reccomend it highly. Also I use the shortbow for the cripple and leap back/evade skill, as well as the stun (if you can hit the guy/gal from behind) it is really good for keeping distance. So I keep my range by dodgeing and CC’s and movement skills, as well as the longbow’s stealth skill.
