How to Agony?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

Just start putting agony resistance in your items. There is an agony extractor available for 24 silver from a fractal merchant, so its not like your going to lose that infusion.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Infusion_Extraction_Device

So whatever i do, no harm done? I can just put in the minimum required AR into my gear until i need more?

Yes. As long as you don’t override infusions with oneanother you can extract and reuse them infinitely.

Hi folks,

In exitement for the upcoming expansion I have extracted a few interesting statistics about the Elites and their base classes. Enjoy.

Utility skills (excluding Revenant, as it defys all core game rules about utilities):

  • Across both expansions only 4 new unique utility types have been introduced to the game:
    • Gyros (Scrapper)
    • Exceeds (Holosmith)
    • Punishments (Scourge)
    • Rages (Berserker)
  • Engineer is the only class with exclusively unique skill types, even when including Elite specs.
    • Elemntalist had 4 unique skill types, like Engineer, but shared Signtes as 5th with other classes and has gained Shouts and Stances as shared types since HoT.
  • Engineer and Ranger are the only two professions who have not “lost” a unique skill type to an elite yet.
  • Since PoF, Thief is the class with the least amount of unique skill types of just 1. (Tricks)
  • Each expansion has a pair of elite specializations that share a skill type
    • Tempest – Reaper (Shout)
    • Weaver – Soulbeast (Stance)
  • Even with many elites sharing skill types with other classes, Signets are still the most commmon utility; available to 7 professions.

Weapons:

  • Since PoF, the most used Wepon across all classes is the sword, being usable by 8 different professions, dethroning staff from HoT with 7.
    • Therefore Necromancer is the only class that can’t use a sword.
    • Across all base classes (including base Revenant) Sword was the most used with 6 users.
  • The Weaponsmith is the most useful Weapon-craftsmanship, being able to craft 37 profession weapons. (e.g. Guardian counts for 6 in this number, carrying Mace, Axe (as FB), GS, Hammer, Shield and Sowrd; Engineer for 3: Shield, Hammer (as Scr), Sword (as Holo); and so on)
    • The Hunstman can craft 21 profession weapons, the Artificer 15.
  • No PoF Elite specialization wields an Artificer weapon.
  • The Soulbeast is the first Elite spec to gain a weapon the base class can already use.

Hope you have a little fun with this.
If you know additional senseless trivia about Elite specs feel free to add it to the thread.

Cheers

If you buy the Permanent Portable Provisioner for 1 gold off the spawn-vendor on a map you can even do Big Spender without entering WvW (if e.g. you can’t enter it because of queues or too hard lag) just buy a few consumables, those work really well in PvE as well.

Like Cedo siad you gain Reward track progression by doing dailies. It’s slow but it will get you there.

Played Holosmith and (to a lesser extend) Weaver over the weekend, which are my 2nd main and main classes respectively.

In general:
I can see that most Gen2 Elites have gotten notably more dev-time and polish and they all look very interesting in at least a few aspects.
However some effect animations are a little too offset from the usual theme of the class (purely visually) making them feel a little disconnected. (e.g. Axe-Symbol on Firebrand)

Specifics:
Weaver: A very interesting idea; embraced to the limit of what a human mind can bear. Weaver is a riddiculously complicated class with an exponentially high skill ceiling. Basically it’s Elementalist².
While that is cool, new and shiny at first glance it’s also its biggest downside:
It’s Just. Too. Much.
I have near 3000 hours in ele and I gave up after 3.5 hours on the golem just reading tooltips. I predict even qT taking a few weeks until all synergies are discovered on all weapons and all are wieghted against each other.
I can’t even begin to fathom where this Elite is going. Is it FL support because of some water synergies? Will scepter take a DPS role? Will it be a duelist?
While Tempest was “abused” as a DPS spec (because of literally a singular trait) it was clearly designed with defensive support in mind. That said: Weaver is just this Quantum particle that’s neither 1 nor 0 but every proportion inbetween.

Holosmith: In regards to Skill impact feels a lot like the HoT-Launch-Version of Scrapper to me. It has a lot of control, nice sustain while hitting quite hard.
That in mind it feels extremely satsifying as a Frontline brawler and an exceptional duelist, just like launch scrapper did.
On the same note I have the fear of the story repeating itself. Scrapper might still be a very viable class for PvP scenarios, but even in Open PvE I have ultimately switched to a Core spec, because Scrapper felt more and more underwhelming over time.
I feel that the Heat mechanic is a big enough layer to allow for the Forge to hit as hard as it does (ok maybe a little lower, but not too much.) the fact that you actually damage yourself if you misplay it is incredibly punishing (in a good way), imo enough to give the Forge this power.
Just like with Scrapper I feel this is the clear Power Engie that I wanted, because I don’t really dig Condi on Engineer.

I expect it to pan out just like the HoT beta-weekends (which was almost exactly the same as this one now)
You will gain 2 Demo slots again and your account will be cloned. You will again get the polymorphous demo gear. On top the new elite will be unlocked on that char.
The main difference from last week is that you will be able to play along in the live game, including WvW and PvP.
So everything will be almost normal except you see Weavers Scourges and Firebrands running around for 3 days

Conditions and "Damage Increase: n%"

In general “Increased Damage by X%” only includes Physical damage, not conditions unless otherwise stated.

Example:
Runes of the Scholar, Bonus 6:

  • +10% Damage while above 90% health
    (is only Physical damage)

opposed to

Runes of the Berserker, Bonus 6:

  • +5% Damage, +5% Condition Damage
    (which is both)

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

All you say is pretty much normal to me. My specs are almost identical to yours. As you mentioned: it depends on how much is going on on screen. When it depends on the direction your looking in it’s tied to the render distance of that map. Sometimes the game calculates the map state if you merely look into the direction of a crowd of people. Tequatl can lag your Frames even if you are on the other side of the hill behind the laser if you just look at him, just because there are so many people.

LA is particularly bad, because it’s generally extremely high populated.
VB is wonky because of a lot of smoke and particle effects.
And WvW/World Bosses: Well… Anyone who tried spawn 1000 zombies in Minecraft at once knows what to expect.

Hope this explains a few things.
Cheers

questions about demo items

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

The Boxes you start with are so you can get a comfortable build for your Demo. Because it’s all unlinked ANet can give this away for free because it’s impossible to get anything out of the demo to real accounts.

questions about demo items

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

Once you create the first DEMO-Character the Game creates a copy of your entire account, then unlinks the copy and unlocks the PoF-DEMO on it. That way they keep the two seperate.

However if you have the time and inventory space you can exploit this and make your time easier in the Demo:
Creating a copy of your account means also copying your account storage including your bank and material storage. If you deposit some gear and utilities, Armor Boxes or other goodies in the bank before you create a DEMO-Char, you will copy all of it and will be able to use it in the Crystal oasis. E.g. I twinked over my Scholar gear and my legendaries as well as some boosters and BL QoL consumables.
Because the Accs are unlinked after copying, you can freely use all those resources without the fear of losing them on your main Acc.

Heck: You can even Ecto-Gamble for free in the demo this way

Once the Demo is over the Copy of your account is deleted, hence everything on it is “lost”. (but it’s only a copy, so your main acc doesn’t change)

Perhaps it’d be better in new fractal was in category of its own? T5. And move CM versions and further new fractals there too?

We don’t want to make a Tier 5. Players historically all try to concentrate in the highest tier, and adding another one just means further spreading out the player base,. Eventually they will all end up in Tier 5 anyways, it just requires even more progression and hard work to get to the end. We feel like T4 is good for “max difficulty” and CM’s allow us to add another layer of challenge for hardcore players without requiring us to make T5 versions of every fractal.

Hi Benjamin,
on more of a sidenote of expanding fractals: Does the fractal team already have a plan on how to handle more than 25 different fractals? Is it intended to eliminate duplicate islands from each tier? Because I find it interesting that you have a choice among certain instabilities, depending on what build you run. Will you then expand he system beyond Scale 100?

We will cross that bridge if and when we come to it. I don’t think we would want more than 100 scales, but we might alter the system such that more than one fractal can exist at one scale. It would involve heavy UI and systems changes for sure. We have plenty of time to come up with solutions.

Well said! I also like the idea of having multiples on the same scale (almost like when it was random like in the very beginning)
Thanks for the super-quick answer.

Some questions before I play ele.

in Elementalist

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

Hi,

Currently Ele is in a rather comfortable spot for viability.

In all aspects of PvE (Open world, Raids and Fractals alike) Ele is one among the Top-DPS classes and is highly sought after for all sorts of content. If you want to play a little off-meta you can also do heal and support for your group.

In WvW Eles make for potent healers and even stronger boon support, keeping their allies alive with strong heal spikes and condition clear.

In PvP Ele is more of a bunker class with strong support and healing capabilities and is able to fend off a node even from multiple opponents until reinforcements arrive.

I hope you’ll have fun with one of the most intricate classes in the game. Eles are a lot of fun to play with, even more fun to play as but can also be a pain to play against.

Good Luck

hornswroggle.8023

I have not as bad if an experience when I heal PUGs on T4. Usually we do it 1st try, sometimes a Vet slips though and we pull back to recover.

Bear in mind that Sub 6’s 2 unique debuffs (corrode armor & corrode weapon) are technically conditions, that can be removed and transferred, so clearing them can make your time easier.
I once gave him 19 Stacks of corrode weapon… his bounce only did 23 damage to me.

Also try to time your DPS spike on the vets with the CC break to use the most out of that sweet 50% bonus. You only get one of it because CC usually doesn’t recover in time for a second one.

You randomly get the potions from rank up chests……. they auto consume

Also drops from players, being added to your wxp bar right away.

They don’t drop from players anymore, they where all removed, this is why im saying they need put back into the game mode.

They do drop!
They just are auto-consumed and instantly added to your WXP Bar. And yes: that includes Kegs of WXP, so you can kill a random dude and rank up 5 times at once (I’ve had it happen myself). I also get thimbles from ranking up every once in a while.

Edit: Also you can still actually gain WXP without ever playing:

Very first one I ever did (waaaaay back when it was 4 random ones at a time) also one of the few I successfully soloed. finally I really like the mystery surrounding it.

2. Thaumanova
Since I was late for the LWS1 party this one really helped me understand the ins and outs of Scarlet and her armies. Also as an Asura main I enjoyed getting the backstory for the ruins in Metrica and since the rework the mechanics are amazing.

3. Nightmare
As many would agree this is one of, if not the best fractal in existence today (though Benjamin already teased that this spot is not unrivaled ) It proves how much the team has improved on encounter design and even if the Fractal and the Raid team don’t work together directly one can definitely see that they are learning from one another and don’t make the mistakes the other one has encountered.

Also be on the lookout in the new LWS3 maps. they also have quite a lot of MP that are relatively easy to claim.

Help Understanding Elementalists (Solo PvE)

in Elementalist

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

Hi there fellow Elementalist. I hope I can answer your questions

1. What is weapon swap for other classes is Attunement swap for Ele (quite literally). How ever due to it still being the same weapon type a lot of the skills are similar across all 4 attunements.
Usually the ranged weapon the Ele has is the staff. Maybe it just requires you getting used to it, because I feel it being useful against single and multiple targets alike.

2. While not being as strong as Daredevil and Revenant at destroying defiance, Ele is very much up there for CC-Bars. Especially Focus and offhand Dagger have quite a few options with strong knockdowns, but also chills cripples and immobilizes in Air Water and Earth. Also The Frostbow 5 is a very strong stun. Usually Eles rotate once across all attunements to tag all CCs they have and then return to their main damage attunement, in most cases Air, because Fresh Air has killed the CD by then.

3. While missing a definitive direction for PvE (as elaborately described by Wooden Potatoes) Tempest is very useful at least for the overloads alone. Usually Tempests run a Zerker Set with Harmonious Conduit for the extra damage. But also a few bunker/healer builds have risen yet they are mostly used for group content or PvP.

4. As you already noticed Cloth armor makes ele fragile. In fact: being Light Armor, Low Vitality it is the squishiest class in the game. Usually Eles rely on Dodges and positioning alone to survive. But on top they have a handful of utilities and traits that get them through hairy situations. Arcane Shield, Flash and Mistform come to mind. Again getting used to the staff as ranged weapon might help as well.

5. The usual Damage build runs Fire/Air/Tempest and goes full ham damage. However there are condition builds, but they require a lot more from the player to execute. I’d say for solo open PvE run whatever you feel like. Experiment with stats and Traits, how they synergize and interact.

Cheers

This question is odd…
Usually you Pick a class first, then decide which build to run and then pick the stat set that fits it best.
Example:
I want a Necro, and I want to run a condi build. So I choose something like Viper or Sinister as stats.
Or I want a guardian, and I want him to be super Tanky. So I pick something akin to Nomads Stats, because it supports that build.

You should never craft towards a stat-set, letalone an ascended one, without knowing what build or playstyle you want to support with it. To build a class around a stat set is the tail wagging the dog.

Good suggestion. Has been brought up several times before.
Would not only improve raiding experience (especially the VG example you bring)
but also in many other places in the game, like World boss-Events, where not only 10 but 100 players’ effects are firing. It could also improve the experience of players on low-spec machines as it would take pressure from their hardware.
But I’d like to add, that I would want my own effects to be always visible to myself, because it is the only feedback I get if the skill has properly fired or not.

Question about unlocking masteries

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

I wouldn’t worry about unlocking gliding yet, play through LWS2. Torn from the Sky picks up where LWS2 ends, and gliding requires you to play HoT content to learn. So if you don’t want spoilers, just keep on with LWS2. HoT will be there when you get to it (and so will gliding).

Thanks for quick reply
I just wanted to unlock gliding a.s.a.p. because I like doing jumping puzzles and from what I’ve heard gliding helps a lot

Also, do my levels (after 80) still count even if masteries aren’t unlocked?

Gliding is Disabled in most JPs, at least in Core Tyria, they even have a “No-Fly-Debuff”.

Assuming “still count” means you still get XP for spirit shards: I think so (?). But once you started you won’t get Spirit shards in Core Tyria or Maguuma until you have all masteries of the respective area unlocked and activated.

• Crafting proffessions at 500 (weaponsmith and armorsmith/ taloring/ leatherwork)
• 130 Mastery points (Mixed HoT and Maguuma- missing 2 last masteries from HoT which require 12 points each i think)
• I have completed the very first Astralaria colletion and got the recipe for “The Device”, but im afraid to start it.
• I don’t have that many T6 mats, cuz i usually sell them, but i started gathering them once again..

Apart from that,

- i could do T3 fractals for now, still working on AR on my accessories. Trying to get accessories with viper stats atm.
- i can run SW maps, i quiet like it so i dont mind staying there for hours.
- i can run DS meta or any other meta on HoT maps

i’m gonna try to do what @Khisanth suggested.. I just got back to the game, so ill have to work on my income a bit, but apart from the ways above, im not sure what else i can do to make good amount of money.

I wanted to try TP flipping, but i guess im too dumb for it.. i’ve no clue what to flip, especially after taking a break. ^.^

If you are looking for viper jewelry I recommend the LWS3 maps as they porvide (more than) a full set of fully stat selectable accessories; including backpiece

Raid Flexibility

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

1. Actually there is a LOT of leeway outside of the Meta if you have the Boss Mechanics and your class mastered. There are many viable builds for all 9 professions that can comfortably complete the content when played well. Meta builds are just the best among them. Differences from the meta mostly fall within +/- 5%.
2. Same goes for the “Super-Comp”. There’s more than one viable comp, the Meta-Comp is just the one very best. Again assuming that your team knows their role, task and the mechanics, deviations from the meta are usually negligible.
3. Yes Raid encounters can very much be cleared with <10 players. in fact off the top of my head I can recall a 3-man Vale Guard kill and 2 Solo Cairn-Kills. This is also the reason why most groups tend to proceed when only one member is defeated, rather than resetting the encounter immediately. However: The more ppl you remove from the equation the less room for error you have and the longer the encounter will take.

Good Luck in your endeavors

I like Zojja for multiple reasons:
1) She’s an asura (like my main)
2) She’s an Ele (like my main)
3) She’s a Synergetics Student (like my main)
4) In the personal Story she is by far the best written Mentor character among all races, and the german VA Stephanie Kindermann (I’m not native; I play with german VO) did her very best to underline that. I’ve had so many laughs just when she dropped a line.

Sadly in Season 2 the German VA changed to a person with a much higher voice making Zojja sound more like a 12-year-old rather than an experienced war veteran who faced down an elder dragon.

I’d love to hear something from Zojja. Much like with the announcement from the Queen when Logan was hospitalized they don’t actually need a VA to keep a character alive. A blog post can do a lot of work. It’s kinda sad that they basically doubled up on Logan (Blog Post & Live Episode Entrance), yet Zojja still got nothing. I just hope they don’t have to kill one of their best Characters just because there’s noone willing to voice her.

Sure. Double uptime from half the sources evens out.
Still Soothing Power is very much inferior to both other grandmaster options.
I see this build exceed in Afflicted-Fractals with Cleansing Waters, since staff can give regen a little better with Water-Projectiles and Water 5. But furter than that it’s more of a support build rather than a healer as long as you avoid Powerful Aura.

Healing ele

in Elementalist

Posted by: hornswroggle.8023

hornswroggle.8023

Sadly Soothing Power is never worth it over Powerful Aura. Elemental Bastion is just too powerful (I tried). On top: you miss out on a lot of Auras when you take staff. WH has a better version of magnet aura with a blast and boon extension added to it. Also dagger has a leap finisher and more blasts which also lets you share fire and frost aura given the Combo fields. Even further: your auras carry regen which stacks with soothing mists to make for 800HP/s regeneration intensity; you share Vigor which can save your allies a lot of trouble and if that’s not enough you give Protection which also stacks with frost aura netting 43% reduced incoming damage (50% for Tempests). You gave yourself 80% boon duration yet you don’t share half of them to your allies ultimatively wasting a lot of your potential.
Just my two cents.

Where I see the problem: All methods of acquisition of these boxes are timegated and random to prevent people basically buying the mission reward for a few badges (which is good; it keeps the value of Guild commendations high)

Having the certainty that when I come out of “Self-Regulating Defenses” i’ll have my main weapon equiped is actually pretty sweet, that way I know which buttons to press when I come out of it (eg. >dodge>toolkit>block). I think it’s easy to miss which kit you were in when the trait proc’ed.

Exactly. Plus: even if you still want your previous kit back it has no CD. You are one button press away from restoring the former situation.
@OP: I know it’s annoying at times, but it’s part of playing the engineer. Be happy that they aren’t conjured weapons with 30s+ CD.

Sigil of Malice + Sigil of Agony

Any condition can be extended independently as well as the overall condition duration.

Malice and Agony stack as follows:
Agony increases the Duration of all bleeds you apply by 20%
Independently from that Malice increases all conditions you apply by 10%
netting 30% bleed duration. The tooltip of your Condition duration gives you a nice overview. For individual conditions it shows the combined duration, e.g. in our example it will show 10% in the hero panel and 30% bleed (10+20) in the tooltip.

Now if you already have 75% bleed duration, agony will increase it to 95%, then malice will increase it to 100%, “overcapping” the remaining 5%.

Some classes have a potent way of “breaking” this cap however:
Whenever a Trait extends the condition duration of a particular weapon (like Lingering Curse (Necro) or Chemical rounds (Engi) ) It will increase the Base duration of the skill before your own duration is applied, making for effectively 150% duration in the end.

What I also find is that dungeons in the mentioned level ranges (like CM, TA or FC) also tend to drop a fair amount of gear salvageable for these materials.

A friend of mine also liked to do a tour in Sparkfly fenn and time it in such a way, that it usually ends on the beach right when Tequatl spwans. This can also net you a reasonable amount of Platinum and Hard wood and there’s always the candy (teq) waiting at the end.

Dungeons and fractals are fine without HoT, although you won’t be able to play the highest level fractals as you’ll be missing out on max agony resist without HoT/masteries.

You can stack infusions high enough even without attuning rings. you just have to put +10 infusions on all slots rather than +9.

is this only an issue in bloodstone fen or are you talking about other maps as well

It’s everywhere, not just BF. It’s with EVERY environmental pickup, transformation or tech-imposed weapon swap.
It’s between “annoying” and “very annoying”, but since Kits don’t have a CD (unlike Conjured weapons) a practised engineer will get used to constantly re-equipping them manually.
Yes it would be awesome if it got fixed, but if not it’s not the end of the World.

Thanks for the great advice! I’m going to have to wait until I am a Reaper to use a GS but look forward to trying it. I will try Sc/Da or WH. I tried googling what Marks don’t work against but couldn’t find anything. Is that at higher levels?

I’m going to eventually have to take a break from playing and watch some Beginner Necromancer videos like I did for Mesmer. I can see myself improving a little every day but this is going to be a slow steady climb no matter what I play.

I’m glad there are so many options for professions. If I start struggling really bad with Necromancer, like I did with Mesmer, my next try will be Warrior.

In general marks don’t work against inanimate objects like Structures or rare occasions of bosses, which are implemented in a similar fashion (very technical)
If a mark does not go off on a target try luring another enemy into it because in most cases that will also put the effects on the first one.

Sc/Da or Wh are very good choices for you. It’s very Condition-Heavy and let’s you stay your distance to get used to the movement and helps you stay alive, while your conditions do the work even if you can’t keep up the pressure very well.

Experiment with the classes! If you don’t feel one – scrap it. If you need help – ask.
I wish you a very enjoyable time in Tyria.
Cheers

Fractals as a Stepping Stone to Raids

Where is this imaginary increase in difficulty?

True. There are so many people in GW2 who confuse mechanical depth with difficulty.

In an encounter every good mechanic is a tool the devs give the players to work with. If used wrong a tool won’t do its job and may very well even harm you. However when used correctly the task becomes almost trivial.

That is why expierienced and skillful players precieve the new T4 fractals as “so easy” because they use the full toolbox of mechanics to their advantage to go smoothly throuh the content.

However someone not using the mechanics (out of inexpierience or ignorance) will have a really rough time because the tools turn on them.

The Bitterfrost Iceblock debuff switches you out of your kit because it is technically an environmental package with the breakout skill on 1. The game doesn’t “remember” that you were on FT and instead swaps you back to your real weapons.
Same is true for Bloodstone Fenn where you equip the aerial skills whenever you glide. Whenever you pick a bundle up you have to re equip any kit you had in hand.

You’re likely to fall shorter than 10 day per weapon since you can drop golden relics and even full golden weapons from dailies, which you then can also salvage for additional golden relics

Yes it should only be on the Lifetime tab and yes that is misleading.

on edit: Sadly no. You have to go to each one or keep track of it otherwise. There are mutliple community websites that offer tools for that.
