Suggestion for Mesmer portals

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

My suggestion is for Mesmer portals to have a direction indicator pointing to its twin (each pointing to the other) visible to all friendly players. Enemy players will see it as they do now.

Personally, I picture it something like the ‘male’ symbol i.e. a circle with an arrow (the direction indicator) protruding from it.

So, say in WvW, if I see a portal with direction indicator pointing in the direction we’re heading, I know its probably safe to take. If its pointing behind me, then I shouldn’t take it.

(Firstly, sorry to dredge this up. I was busy over the last few days to reply)

Well, no one is forcing anyone to play at gunpoint so no one is actually forced, right?

The first line is correct. Take responsibility for your actions. You are forcing yourself to do something you don’t enjoy just for a prize.

Let’s get rid of the “nobody is forcing” argument, it’s just silly. Yes, due to the way it’s set up, ANet is forcing people to play Dragon Ball in so far as they can force anyone to do anything. It’s settled, there’s no point trying to argue otherwise.

Actually, I meant that with quite a bit of sarcasm.

Reasoning: Given that nobody is forcing anyone to play GW2, we could essentially use that “nobody is forcing you to play” argument everywhere and everyone should just “take it or leave it”. So no one should be on the forums making suggestions, complaints or asking for any change because “nobody is forcing you to play”. Not sure if that’s a healthy direction.

This being the internet, I suppose some opposition to the change could be from those making gold out of Dragonball and liking how Anet is feeding them PVP-adverse players this year i.e. defending their own interests.

Ok, with that out of the way…

Wintersday had musical games, snowball fights, a donation drive and even a jumping puzzle; in addition to Tixx’s Workshop etc. This Lunar festival practically IS Dragonball. Why? Somehow, A-net got the impression the Chinese hold gladiatorial fights during Chinese New Year? LOL. I’m ethnically Chinese and I can tell you nothing like that occurs. Anyway, what I’m basically appealing for is just to provide more activities and allow us to avoid Dragonball completely next year.

I also want to point out (again) that in Dragonball, you get nothing even when your team scores 480 when the other team wins. This feels “hardcore” and I’m sure we need no reminding how that “hardcore” game (also under NCSoft) is doing. Don’t go down that route for a seasonal activity! BTW, I understand why loser gets nothing but you shouldn’t be feeding casuals/folks like me into it.

Maybe it is more troublesome to actually implement any of the changes either I or others in this thread have suggested. So perhaps a “simple” solution is really just to have more alternatives available. Help us (folks like me) avoid this activity and the pros can battle it out themselves. Although, I do wonder without being fed and having to fight against other similarly skilled opponents only to get nothing in a 500-480 match, if they will still enjoy it so much.

Character Slot for Heart of Thorns? [Merged]

As for EOTN, even back then, A-net said it was not an expansion (in the sense Factions and Nightfall was). Crucially, it did not introduce a new class.

You got it mixed up. EotN (leaving GW Beyond out of it) were the only expansion, hence why you need one of the standalone campaigns to play it. It wasn’t a new game in the sense Nightfall and Factions were because you actually needed at least one of the three games to play it. They even sold EotN bundled with Prophecies from day one.

There aren’t really any reasons to demand a free character slot. You’re paying for content, that’s what you get.

Why not? Factions introduced 2 new classes, it provided a character slot. Same for Nightfall.

No new classes in EOTN so no character slot. Fine.

Bah humbug to being forced. It’s all voluntary. Nobody is making you chase that laurel but yourself. Do dragonball if you like it, don’t if you don’t.

Well, no one is forcing anyone to play at gunpoint so no one is actually forced, right?

But that doesn’t address my issue that the activity has such a hard edge to it. They made it so when they made it winner takes all. Please make it more casual friendly if we’re being forced to play it to get the Laurel.

Good thing that players are currently not forced to play Dragonball. Besides, the proposed changes would ruin the activity.

I believe a better approach would be to target the festival itself and how more should be added to it.

Unlike the Wintersday event where you could avoid 1 item you didn’t like (do 5 out of 6), this one essentially forces you to play Dragonball because 2 of the 4 items are Dragonball related and you need to do 3.

So you are forced if you want that Laurel. And it has such a hard edge for a seasonal game.

But I agree they should add more to the festival so that folks can avoid Dragonball altogether.

Firstly, I am disliking not being able to avoid Dragonball completely. Mercifully, its just to participate in 2 games; unfortunately it count towards character deaths which has prompted me to use my mule for Dragonball.

I hope that next year, A-net not force us to play PVP type activities. I dislike PVP activities and making me play one is not going to make me a convert. Let those who like such activities go ahead but don’t force us into the meat grinder. I’m sure you must recognize that a good portion of your player base doesn’t like PVP-type activities.

Inb4 no one is forcing you to play. Just give up the Laurel. They should not be leaving out any part of their player-base. Especially the PVE-only group.

Next section is assuming that I will be forced to play Dragonball next year.

I understand why make the losing team not get anything at all. It prevents the AFK reward farming and is successful at it. Fine, keep it. Its good.

However, since now there is such a hard edge to a seasonal game (winner takes all and even a game that ends at 500-480 results in the losers getting nothing), I hope that A-net will consider changing or removing some of the following features to make it more casual friendly (and pro-unfriendly):

Ability to call targets – I believe that the winning team is one that just stays together and calls targets. Please remove ability. Turn Dragonball into a rumble type fight and more casual friendly.

Remove the healing orbs – This will ensure that the over-aggressive will die sooner or later.

Drastically reduce the distance where a player can be targeted (and stay targeted) – the issue here is pursuit i.e. just target a player, spam 1 and follow where the shots go. I can hardly escape a pursuer because of this. They will always know where I am.

Change Dragonball’s Skill 1 to be based on firing at a reticle on screen – this is an alternative to the point directly above so jinking and running through the tunnels can throw off a pursuer.

Provide skill 2 by default – This is an important skill and all payers should be armed with it right out of the gate. It will also make spawn camping that much harder.

Players who already have a skill should not cause the corresponding orb to disappear when touching it – Again in conjunction with the point directly above, this will disable any denial or spawn camp strategy.

Of course, if everyone were not forced to play Dragonball, all that can be avoided. A-net please consider not making Dragonball a part of next year’s Lunar New Year celebrations.

Selling dungeon runs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: justkoh.4073

justkoh.4073

I tried to search for party to do a dungeon path with, and in the LFG tool everything I saw was players selling a run. Now I didn’t buy this game to have someone else play it for me, but it got me thinking is this kind of thing legal according to EULA? Can I report the sellers for scamming players?

Just a day or two ago, an AC P1 group I was with was kicked by 2 guildies just before the boss. They then proceeded to list the instance in LFG and asked for 90s per person joining. I reported them of course. First, each individual for ‘scamming’ and then to support with a screenshot.

Speaking to someone who joined them (and later left that party and joined my re-run) I was informed the scammers claimed they duo’ed the dungeon.

Before this incident I always believed that it was not wrong to sell a legit dungeon run. However, I am starting to consider that its just not possible to distinguish between the legit and scam ones and if selling dungeon runs was made bannable, then the incentive to hijack dungeon runs would also be removed.

For now, I am just gonna write off that bad experience as a one off in AC and I hope A-net will take firm action against such instance-hijackers/scammers.

My feedback for Wintersday

1) Bell Choir – Like some others, I encounter instances (say, 30% of the time) where every key I press is doing damage despite I’m certain being pressed correctly. However, nothing that relogging into the instance or waiting for a new round wouldn’t fix.

2) Winter Wonderland JP – BIG improvements on this. Last year, it was laggy and I recall falling from visible platforms for no apparent reason. In fact, in the last few days (of Wintersday 2013), I wasn’t even able to get to the halfway mark. Stability and lag is much improved this year for me. First day I fell like crazy but with practice, I was clearing this on the first attempt everyday.

3) Grawnk – I like the Star of Gratitude item obtained at the end. Prior to this, I was simply disposing of stacks of Empyreal Shards.

4) Divinity’s Reach, Ho-ho-tron/Dolyak Event – I expected more people to be screaming “let the Skritt hit the dolyak” more. How did fail farmers miss that one? It probably wasn’t worth it. LOL

Don’t like playing:

  • (Norn/Charr) ‘Lumbering’ feel. Especially without speed boosts,
  • (Norn/Charr) Terrible for jumping puzzles and dislike their jumping posture,
  • (Norn) males look terrible. Their shoulders are abnormally droopy,
  • (Norn) females in skirts all look like their wearing an adult diaper inside,

PS. I have 16x 80s total including 2 each of Norn and Charr. Just don’t like paying them as much for the reasons stated.

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: justkoh.4073

justkoh.4073

Just wanted to give my feedback on the new dailies. Hopefully A-net is still taking notes from this thread.

Firstly, I don’t mind removal of monthlies and am OK with the daily login rewards. Secondly, I only PVE and WvW – I do not PVP so no feedback on those.

WvW Dailies
I’ll start with the simple one.

Overall, I am liking them very much and hope they’re kept as is. I like the reduction in requirements and in particular, the change of Daily Invasion Defender (kill 10 players in WvW) from appearing daily to occasional and only 3 players.

As the WWF saying goes “When the achievements stops, the killing can too”. :P

I am loving the opportunity to earn a Tome of Knowledge when capturing a Keep. One feedback is I hope taking SMC will count towards Keep Capturer (it is not currently).

PVE Dailies
This one is a mixed bag. Some I like, some I really don’t care for. None are too troublesome but that could be because I am a veteran player with sufficient understanding of the game and resources.

As with WvW Dailies, I am liking the opportunities to earn a Tome of Knowledge but in PVE, I can also earn extra Pristine Fractal Relics for Fractal runs and Ectoplasm just for making Exotic Essence of Luck.

Also happy that I don’t have to look for “Mentored Events” anymore i.e. no AP opportunity cost to skip.

IMO, I think the PVE achievement items would be a lot better if they were made “region/zone-free” or taught gameplay mechanics (e.g. Daily Interruptor/Dodger). The new gathering ones are way too specific (zone + type all specified). Fractals too (drop the level specification).

Overall
As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, I too believe that Dailies should be covered naturally as you play the game. This was largely true of the “PVE” achievements of the past. As I run Ascalonian Catacombs P1 to P3 everyday, I would find that the “PVE” achievements were largely accomplished by the time I finished; typically only sans Daily Gatherer.

This is no longer the case. In fact, running AC P1 to P3 does nothing for dailies nowadays. I need to make special trips to places to finish them (I ignore the “Metrica Province events” or “Daily Frost Maw” types; going mainly for the “Shiverpeaks Gatherers” or “Ascalonian Vista” types). Does this bother me a lot? Not at all! I have 16 fully exotic-equipped level 80s stationed around Tyria and have good understanding of how to accomplish these efficiently. But it’s still a deviation from the earlier philosophy of earning dailies as you play.

Do folks on new accounts see the same things we do? I can only imagine someone with a fresh GW2 account and first character (say its a human, for example) encountering Ascalonian Vistas or Dredgehaunt Cliffs Events Completer. What the heck is that? And its so far away. If they decided to tough it out without asking they could be attempting to cross high level zones which is frustrating and also tedious if they don’t know about the Asura portal system through Lions Arch etc. Point is, not going to be a pleasant early game experience.

In summary (and IMO), the changes to the WvW dailies were very much in the right direction while PVE dailies mostly went to wrong way.

Removing White Sword : Good or Bad?

in WvW

Posted by: justkoh.4073

justkoh.4073

Has Anet hired Yak Bend to be their consultants for the direction to take WvW? The last 2 major changes (Siege Disablers and now this no-white sword thing) plays right into their play-style. I’m not commenting here if the way YB plays is correct or not – they made it to T2 after all; but stop forcing that play-style down everybody’s throat!

On the plus side, at least this time Anet had the sense to give it a trial period instead of making it permanent from the get-go or like the Siege Disablers, introduced at the start of a tournament.

Not going to repeat the sentiments already expressed in earlier posts so my input is this: Remember when there was no time limit for rezzing at a WP and some folks would choose to stay dead within an enemy’s structure sometimes for hours? This would force someone to have to watch over the corpse or risk a portal right into the structure (or other shenanigans). I always figured that the reason A-net finally decided to remove it was because it simply wasn’t fun. Especially for the ones who have to watch over a corpse.

So in the same line of thought, why force people to have to play guard duty? If its real life, guard duty is a necessity but in a game, it’s a just isn’t a fun feature.

We are being removed!

I really have no idea why you did this in this way… but sure, whatever. I’d strongly advise you to link to this post in your OP, if you don’t want to end up on a large number of block lists.

I wanted to let this simmer longer to get a reaction but it seems unanimous enough. I tried to replicate the fellow’s attitude to this in the confrontation afterwards too. OK, will take your advice.

Somehow when I decided on the approach, I imagined people telling me to “suck it up and move on”. Guess that’s from too much stalking of the Archeage forums. The replies are harsh as they should be, yet an encouraging reflection on the community.

As above you have by your wording alienated a lot of people. Don’t know why. If you are trying to deflect it was badly done, if you are trying to draw attention to the problem it was badly done.

I am unafraid of ‘alienating’ people. The world is big and people come and go.

If I’ve a concern, it is that A-net takes the OP at face value without investigation. If they investigate, then they will know if we are perpetrator or victim.

Its very heartening to hear all your comments (so far).

In reality, my brother was the victim and I really have no idea why he was kicked except it was sudden and without warning (the guy admitted as much).

I have no idea if its really because they have a guildie who has Nomads/Magi but when I thought about it, it was the only reason I could think of.

Great job souring an innocent players experience in the game while ignoring the fact that your guildie can easily switch his armor.

I fully agree with you and my thoughts exactly. My brother just joined the game 3 months ago but having played and done AC all paths everyday (literally Mon to Sun), has become very proficient at it. We’re all grown up so no crying about it but this is one of my major concern as well.

Yes. Reportable. And since there’s a pattern of you doing it, a bannable offence.

The pug will not get into trouble for abusing the report tool.

A report was made and we do not believe that we will get into any trouble either.

I agree that a pattern needed to be established so even if nothing happens this time, once there is a history, A-net would be more likely to take action.

The only way you could cover yourself in this situation is if you posted straight up in your LFG: “Looking for 5th to stack kill Spider Queen. Please leave afterwards or you will be kicked.”

And if somebody still joined your group after that, well, they deserve what they get for not reading properly.

EDIT: Also, if your guildie is too weak/unskilled to stack kill the Queen, why not just fight her in the open? It takes, what, an extra 20 – 30 seconds to kill her that way? Unless you’re trying to break a speed clear record, I highly doubt that short an amount of time matters to you and your friends.

Agree with you on pre-stated conditions in LFG. The LFG was “P1 80s only”.

As for killing the SQ, our preference is to fight her in the open. As a matter of fact, we have not found anyone (PUGs or guilds) wanting to stack for perhaps a month already. But yet, my brother was able to help kill it with Time Warp.

I apologize for presenting the scenario in this way but I felt from the victim’s perspective will make me look whiney… And, to increase awareness of establishing a pattern to combat such behavior.

So far, 8 replies and mostly that it is bannable. Good.

To the OP: I understand your technique in trying to make a point across, but I don’t think it was as good idea as you possibly thought it was, so I suggest you change it as some people are still clearly not understanding that you’re not trolling dungeon parties even after you’ve revealed you are not.

Do different races affect hitboxes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

justkoh.4073

My impression are that the hit boxes are not the same.

I do Ascalonian Catacombs on a daily basis on either my Sylvari, Human or Charr.

During the Ghost Eater fight, it releases those “hoops” which look akin to the Ele’s dagger Water 1 attack. These can be dodged but if you just stand between them, they can be simply avoided. This is true for the Sylvari and Human. However, if the “hoop” even clips the tail tip of the Charr (side facing the Ghost Eater), she gets damaged along with the accompanying conditions.

If the hit boxes are the same, I cannot imagine that it is so off-set from the Charr’s body that the tail tip would count. Certainly, when her body is hit, she still gets damaged.

I base my impression of the different hit boxes on this observation.

Do banned accounts count towards server pop?

@Astral Projections – that’s unfortunate because it seems that even now those banned account are using ‘space’ in the server which could be used for an active player. It doesn’t matter for PVE of course. But in WvW where population is, if not one of the strongest metrics for success? It matters a lot!

If these accounts are still being counted towards population, I’d like to request Anet to consider moving them out of each server’s count. Perhaps allow them to re-choose a server again if ever reinstated? Pretty sure most folks will not risk perm-ban to get a free transfer.

By the coverage YB has during tournament, I think if they swapped with Mag, Silver would be so much better. And YB might have a better chance than Mag in Gold. but no one knows this before the tournament.

I’m liking most of how S3 is being run. However, I’m really hoping that Anet removes the “league” system for future tournaments; Especially since we get our rewards weekly now. What I’d like is for servers to be free to rise and fall based on their score instead of the league lock.

The odd coincidence of server implosions, tournament timing and league locking is causing servers not being where they should be tier-wise. In turn, this massively imbalances the match.

Without the league lock, Mag could have fallen over the weeks to somewhere their current population could manage while Yak’s Bend would be fighting FA and SOS. I believe they have the population to support being in T2.

And someone seems to have taken issue unnecessarily (not in my target audience) with what I’ve said. Its not for you. You’re probably experienced and don’t need to force stealth down everybody’s throat. Shoo!

The benefit of this method is it puts the control of not bugging Detha and ensuring the last 15mins in P2 doesn’t go down the drain in the hands of a more experienced person. After all, not every group you form is full of experts.

Bug in AC P2 and a possible work-around

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: justkoh.4073

justkoh.4073

Firstly, Ascalonian Catacombs Path 2 (Detha’s path) has a big irrecoverable bug in it.

From my observation, this happens during the run from the chain trap room to the Hall of Champions. If someone gets downed or killed during the run, Detha will try to rez the person and has a chance of getting bugged. Once it happens, she will continuously follow the players around and not activate the scene where she talks to the ghost (and hence the turret defense stage) . It seems this bug is irrecoverable.

(As opposed to where the turret defense stage was activated but she did not start to set up the traps. In this case, getting her killed by the Champ graveling seems to work).

Anyway, until this get fixed. I found a way that could help us (PUGs) avoid the irrecoverable bug. Basically, it involves preventing Detha from ever trying to rez the downed/dead.

After the chain trap stage, everyone runs to the Hall of Champions from either Foefire’s Heart WP or Flooded Temple WP as normal. All except one player who will stay at the waypoint and “leash” Detha. That way, even if anyone downs, Detha will not try to rez and hence bug. The downed can either be rezzed by other players or die and try the run again. Once everyone else has made it, the leashing player can make his run. Obviously, the leashing player should have the necessary skills or experience to succeed in the run at one go.

I also note that Foefire’s Heart WP has a shorter run but IMO, is worse for light armored characters. Running from Flooded Temple WP is longer but is far less “in-your-face” and also better for leashing Detha since its considered farther back than Foefire’s Heart WP.

I’ve tried this solution a few times and has a 100% success rate in avoiding the bug. Have presented it here so that everyone hopefully has smoother AC P2 runs.

@justkoh – Your imagination when coming to people with heavy armor is very limited. Just because they have heavy armor, it doesn’t exclude them from a lot of different things.

I take offense to you saying the Guardian is “a stretch”. Have you never played a Paladin in other RPGs? That’s what a Guardian is. A holy fighter, imbued with the spirit of justice. Some people would also make the comment that he’s a Runeknight/Mageblade, which are two other fantasy trope characters that are heavy armor but deal with magic (in this case, with elemental instead of holy, usually).

There can be just as many classifications of “big armored guy slinging spells” as there can be of “weak clothy guy slinging spells”. What’s preventing us from having a variant of the heavy armored guy that does illusion-style spells like the Mesmer? The fact that we already have a mesmer, yes, but what if we didn’t have a Mesmer class already? Would you decry the fact that the illusionist had heavy armor, and why?

In the same regard, what’s wrong with having a “time mage” in heavy armor? They could very much use their time-related magic to get an edge in melee combat. Freeze your enemy for a second so you can get a lethal hit on him, speed yourself up to react faster, etc., etc…

I had to log in and LOL at someone who “takes offence” at such trivial things. What are you gonna do about me then since you take offence?

Third Soldier Class

I’m hoping that they won’t make another heavy class.

Mainly because I think that “Warrior” already covers everything and the guardian was already a stretch. IMO, guardians should have been a healing/protection based light armored class.

Now lets look at Warriors.
Armored guy with Mace —→ Warrior,
Armored Guy with Great Axe --→ Warrior,
Armored Guy with dual pistols —-→ wussy Warrior but still one
Light-armored guy with Katana? —→ Ninja but that’s not a heavy class anymore by definition.

Magic-users, on the other hand has far less limitations. For example
Time magic —→ Chronomancer (been suggested here on these forums),
Plant magic --→ Chloromancer (like from Rift),
Communer with Spirits —→ The Ritualist (from GW1)
and the list goes on limited only by imagination. These, like the Guardian, should all be light armored classes and only by some ridiculous determination not to make a monk did we get the Guardian.

Anyway, its my hope that Anet stops coming out with any more Heavy armored classes and just give us more Light armored ones. For the Warriors, just give them more weapon types to cater to more play styles.

That AP is there as a small reward for going in low level zone, ideally to Anet you should always enjoy each map no matter the level.

On the other side, why not make enemy towers valid for PvP capture? Or why not make kills in the northern half of BL counting for “Shiverpeak killer”?

There are some dailies exclusive for PvE (usually a couple), 2 for WvW, 2 for PvP and the remaining 5-6 can be done in all modes (events and gathering only in WvW and PvE).
I think it’s balanced, you want to limit yourself to a game mode? Well, you’ll get less AP.

@xGraver.4918 – this is the guy you need to tell to be gone from these forums and go back to his land of PVE.

@Dawntree.7246 – I believe A-net would like to encourage people to play more WvW. It generates little income to cause inflation and is easy to maintain (little new content for a long while); just players keeping players entertained. And that is why I believe they would like to keep the folks happy in WvW and make it more self-contained without having us to go out searching for events.

By your argument, perhaps they should also make Daily Kills only PVE kills, remove all gathering nodes in WvW etc. Not sure where this concept of balance is from. Balance with what?

This is PVE not WvW go back to your land of pve !!!

The “Event Mentor” pops-up twice a month on the 20th and 30th of every month whether you like it or not.

Why would you object to this QOL improvement? You only do the 2 WvW achievements everyday? Or has killing those things been your idea of completing events (shouldn’t be affected anyway).

Unless, you’re not even playing WvW. In which case, begone, PVE’er!

Siege Troll Discussion

Hi all,

Firstly, my concerns,
1. Play my way or else (i.e. my way is right, I am the expert, follow my direction or else I’ll report).

2. How do you tell the inexperienced or mistaken from the trolls?

IMO, the only one that is obvious is Flame Rams because they basically belong only next to doors/gates. I think those that are built in corridors with the excuse of “for fear” are definitely trolling.

For all the rest, they could be situational, something that was relevant in the past (like from pushing back an earlier attack) or even erroneous (mis-click). And I think it will be a mistake on A-net’s part to punish people over those.

There is also such a thing as building golems and taking them for a suicide run. So how do you tell the foolhardy, the inexperienced or the unskilled from the malicious? My belief is it cannot be enforced because it involves mindreading.

Anyways, I’d just like to add my own suggestion which is the concept of “Valid Deployment Areas (VDA)”. For Flame Rams for example, only the areas immediately outside an opposing structure’s gates are valid for deployment. Otherwise you get a “cannot deploy this here” error message.

Extending the above, perhaps the experts can also give input on what the VDAs are for the other sieges. I think ACs, Trebs and Golems are generally good so perhaps just the Catapults and Ballistas?

I also want to add my support for adding the deployer’s name to the siege. It should be visible for screenshot and reporting.

Thanks for reading!

Yes, why not? Some folks like to spend all their time in WvW anyway. I find myself spending more and more time there too.

This suggestion would be nothing but a boon for all WvWorlders and ensures some lesser done events get done.

siege disabilers

Firstly, it wasn’t good to release them just before the tournament without testing.

Secondly, the ground targeting is too large. One should not be able to take out sieges placed on both ends of SMC’s gate. At least 2 should be required.

Third, there should be a limit on the number which may be placed i.e. if this flame ram has already been disabled once, it should not be affected by the disabling effect for the next 2mins (for example).

How about making some of those events to kill vet creatures scattered around WvW (harpy, wurm, warg etc) a level 79 event instead? The level change is just for allowing the achievement to complete; the actual difficulty doesn’t have to change.

This is just so we can complete our Event Mentor daily achievement in WvW as well instead of having to make a trip to Butcher’s Block in Diessa Plateau.

Wait! Why stop at 79? How about uplevels? Well, IMO its no different for them than currently and they will be 80 sooner or later. XD

Solution to fix the population imbalance

in WvW

Posted by: justkoh.4073

justkoh.4073

You guys beat me to it. After last week’s positive discussion on siege trolls I wanted to bring up the topic of population imbalance and ideas that you have on it.

There are a couple of ideas already going in this thread:

  • population caps
  • merge servers
  • Battle Groups

I’d like to join in this brainstorm with some questions on these. For merging servers, how do we determine who gets merged? Where would we merge them to? How do we maintain any sort of world pride or identity they have? How do we handle potentially merging with your mortal enemies?

For population caps, how do we deal with the longer queues on the worlds that can field enough people? If it is dynamic, would players be able to manipulate it? For example, our world is ahead so we all agree to not play WvW so the other worlds are capped down and can’t counter us.

For Battle Groups, Asglarek mentioned more details are on the way. I’d love to hear more.

I’m approaching this as a brainstorm. The topic is “Approaches to correcting overall population imbalance”. I know there is a related topic of 24 hour coverage but I’d like to keep that as a separate conversation for now.

Please keep this friendly, constructive and on topic. We had a really good discussion on the siege troll thread I’m hoping we can kick around some ideas and have another great discussion here. Feel free to add additional ideas that I didn’t list out but please make sure they are on topic.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

I made a post on a similar subject several months back. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Suggestion-Server-Clusters-to-even-coverage/first#post4107787

I would propose that server ‘partnership’ pairings happen on a quarterly basis (or a fixed frequency anyway). That is, the average WvW populations of servers are determined and servers are grouped/clustered based on equalizing that number to ±20% or less. Such clusters may be comprised of more than 2 servers. Example provided in the post (note that the example was based on post-S2 standings).

To clarify: the server each individual belongs to never actually changes. The server groupings are not permanent and will change every quarter.

Such partnerships could have interesting results in terms of play-style and coverage as servers learn from each other and also to cooperate with each other (or hate each other and implode together).

It may be impossible to take player skill, tactical ability, WvW interest and coverage into account. It will never be totally fair but I think equalizing the team populations in WvW would be a great first step. I’ve seen soccer matches between teams of vastly different skill but never one where one was double the size of their opponents. Such things are often a forgone conclusion and are not fun.

I also proposed that we only have 3 tiers; Gold (1st to 3rd), Silver (4th to 6th) and Bronze (7th to 9th). After each week (of the tournament), servers may rise or drop a tier depending on their scores. That way, the rewards for coming in 3rd (3rd in Gold tier) can truly be better than coming in 4th (1st in Silver tier).

Just my suggestion. Thanks!

I don’t suggest we get into an economics discussion with would-be exploiters. That would be skirting the issue.

For those that recall, GW2 used to have a “blink-bot” gathering issue and they could argue the same thing too regarding suppressing material prices and not harming anybody but it doesn’t make it right.

But those are bots, we’re actually taking time out of our day to farm. Bots are big exploits, farming is not, please don’t destroy my favorite place to farm and have fun with people. We all have a lot of fun down there and I don’t want it to end because you all want it nerfed. There needs to be more ways to make money than just spamming dungeons :/ It’s very social and fun down there.

I agree with you that there should be more ways to earn money than spamming dungeons. To some extent, Shelter’s Gate could be an oversight on A-net’s part regarding game design too. That could be why they never banned anyone for participating in the Ember and Dolyak farms but ultimately fixed it.

But I believe my point is understood. That is, the “economic benefits” and “not harming anybody” are irrelevant. Bots are obviously against the TOS so they need to be banned. And so, this discussion is whether deliberately failing an event so that it can be repeated over and over for more loot is an exploit and/or if the event needs to be fixed.

There are play styles which I personally don’t like but would never do anything about them because although somewhat mindless, they are legit. Examples are the QD Champ Farm (gone now but OK if folks are civil and don’t cuss if anyone kills champs out of turn) and Grenth & Arah (also “zergy” but I won’t interfere as long as folks who want to do the defense aren’t harassed. To digress a little, I regard deliberately scaling up the event so that it fails as griefing).

And folks who are trying to complete an event are being cussed at. Yup, we’ve seen that before and we all know what happened in the end.

Yes, its social and fun and in a way, that’s part of the confusion. There’s a sense of camaraderie to it, events being announced, targets being called and everyone getting rich at the same time. How could something so nice be wrong? Unfortunately, its based on exploiting/breaking the game’s DE mechanics and everyone who didn’t play this way became relatively poorer. Perhaps, A-net should make a longer delay upon failure.

There are legit opportunities to zerg so I hope folks can be satisfied with those. Meanwhile, what is broken needs to be fixed.

Can CMDR Tag be passed between characters?

With the commander tags going up in price to 300g on 9/9, now seems like a good time to get one.

I know from the patch notes that it is now account bound but can I just buy one and pass and use it amongst characters in my account? How does it work?

They’re trying to keep the tag relevant as a gold sink but the way they’re implementing it really sucks.

I’m concerned that this tactic will become more widespread. Community makes a request for some feature which should have been there all along, feature is added but A-net takes the opportunity to jack prices up to “modern day levels”.

Can you not jump at the chance to tattle on everything that happens? Orr farming is unprofitable enough, if it isn’t harming you or the community in a substantial way then leave it alone :/

On the contrary, I applaud the OP for reporting this.

There are many people who are concerned the way events are being failed/“exploited” on purpose and will now intervene. Squeezing more out of an event than is intended and designed for will harm everyone else in the long run.

If you’re not doing anything wrong, don’t have to be worried. Orr farming is hardly unprofitable; but greed makes it never enough.

They didn’t ban people for Lyssa farm, Anchorage farm, Shelter and Dolyak farm.

What did they have all in common? Stalling/failing events.

You’re more likely to get banned for harrassing people completing the event than this

However, once these “exploits” came to light, the events eventually did not exist in the same form anymore. I think that is at least true of the Shelter and Dolyak farm.

I don’t think they banned anyone. Everyone has done events in earnest and failed before so the intention to fail needs to be proven.

How is this proven? Aside from reports on the forums, I imagine once people start to make such event succeed, some frustrated exploiter is bound to whisper or say some abusive thing. Screenshot that and report and that’s your proof.
