Daily reminder, things Thief has wrong

in Thief

I could add some:

-Poisons and traps still not worth using in any gametype (since release)
-Pistol/Dagger combo still not worth using in any situation
-Thief seems to be a dragon bc dragonhunters b-line me as soon I appear on the screen

And to the people asking for protection, stability, burning ect… it’s actually the wrong approach to give every class access to everything. The problem isn’t that thief has no access to those certain things, the problem is that too many classes have access to too much stuff. The result is that thief for example has no real place in any gametype bc you can just replace him with class x who does the same stuff thief can do but also brings a lot of other benefits.

The only thing I don’t get is swiftness. Why do thiefs have no easy access to swiftness? It seems a no-brainer to me if you just look at the archetype alone. Same goes for the +25% movement speed, which thief has the hardest time to get without gimping his build- Chronos for example get the passive effect of signet of shadows + “Don’t Stop” (acrobatics grandmaster trait) with just a minor trait……
As a thief, either you go runes or waste 1 passive slot or run around like a snail. Easiest way to solve this would be to make the +25% movement speed baseline for all classes and give the corresponding signets some actual uses.

Thief and sPvP Leagues ?

in Thief

I feel ya. When I play spvp I play 99% thief only. I’ve never had anything to complain about since the original release of gw2, bc thiefs were always in a decent state if you know what you’re doing (I know there were some minor issues throughout the years, but they were just that: minor).

But now, when I struggle against mediocre players or even bad players (hi dragonhunters!) bc I feel like they have an advantage just by picking the right class, things get annoying.

I know in conquest every class has their role and you’re not meant to 1v1 every class/build or be viable in every scenario, but when I have to run away from almost everything and struggle to survive in teamfights were I am not the focus (bc no one really cares about me being there) it is just depressing.

And what about our new elite specc? It’s so nice on paper and I was excited as hell about playing a staff-wielding monkeyking style melee brawler. But after trying almost everything to make staff work, it’s just not playable at all, despite the high spike dmg potential it has.

I play a condi DD/SB (deadly arts/acrobatics/daredevil) for now, which is sort of playable, bc of all the evades and condi removal (through acrobatics) and gives you some sort of suprise advantage since nobody really knows how to deal with it. But pick whatever class and its better at what I do just from the get go.

So now there is leagues and I really think about to learn to play my mesmer or necro in spvp just to save me the frustration from playing thief. Just like I decided to do for pve… I boosted a mesmer who’s getting ready for 50+ fractals bc guess what…

From my experience what many people don’t realize is that most of the times when the event fails it’s not caused by inexperienced players, it mostly happens on overflows, where players are not distributed over all lanes so that some lanes inevitably fail at their champions bc they don’t have enough players to face each champion.
The most common scenario is you go into the energy field and start fighting your champion, but it takes a long time until enough players entered to even have a chance to succeed, if even. When like half of the group enters way too late and then you have maybe 1-2 inexperienced players on top of that, you obviously fail. That’s how it should be.

I think most of the concerns with difficulty could be eliminated just by improving how the server/overflow system works.

@crysto

you are 100% right. I don’t expect people to ignore the fact that this is possible. players always use the most effective way to do something in games, you can’t blame him for that. but this does not change that fact that it’s a broken mechanic and needs to be fixed.

It literally takes a few seconds to fill a group. Make a post yourself don’t just wait for someone else to make one.

There is nothing wrong with path selling either, if there’s demand for it then there will also be a supply.

if that was the case, I wouldn’t complain. But as described before, the lfg tool is litered with spam by sellers and finding decent players has always been a drag for arah, bc many just fail in this instance. But the very fact that they can circumvent it buy buying the gear keeps them being bad at the dungeon and makes finding good players worse.

furthermore, there is no logic behind your last statement. obviously there is a demand for the tokes, bc the skins are very neat and there is a reason that they are in an endgame dungeon, that is harder than the other ones. buying them lowers the dungeon to cof1 level difficulty-wise.

I don’t see this as a game breaking issue. It’s no different from any game where people get carried through content.

ok so you say, other games are broken too, bc players can skip content there, so there is no problem with gw2 being broken? that logic.
Being carried through it dungeon without it being broken would usualy be like taking 3 to 4 experienced players carrying 1 inexperienced player through the dungeon and doing it how it’s supposed to be done, which is totaly fine. But in gw2 you just come in to loot tokens.

cmon arenanet, this has been around for ages now and it’s a gamebreaking issue. yet we have received no fix and not even a word on it.

the problem why it’s gamebreaking is that is very hard to find people who want to do arah legitemately and if you do, many are inexperienced bc they don’t do the instance that often the way it’s supposed to be done.
let alone the spam in the lfg tool, which couldn’t be more annoying.
it also devalues the arah armor/weapon skins, bc there used to be some effort required to get them. now every noob can buy them without being able to do arah properly.

Make the Elder Dragon Champions Instanced

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: kiyue.5817

kiyue.5817

It shouldn’t be instanced. Instancing stuff is the thing you want to avoid the most when you want an mmo that has a living world, which gw2 is set to do. Ofc instancing stuff has it’s advantages but it also locks away players, which is why it isn’t a good solution.

What’s the minimum amount of players you need to beat Tequatl? Basicaly, when does it stop to scale down? Does it even scale at all like other events do, bc it seems you always need 100+ people.

LFG Tool dissapointment

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: kiyue.5817

kiyue.5817

First of all, I like the overall implementation very much. It’s clear and easy to use.

But it has some major issues imo. Most of all the utility is too limitied.
Why can’t I look for people for regular group events on the map? This was the most important thing gw2 needed to make open world areas more populated.
For example, when I want to farm champions on a particular map the lfg tool does nothing for me.
Or take Southsun Cove, the karka queen event rewards have been improved so that it makes sense to do this on a daily basis, but the zone is empty 24/7, I have no means to look for people except spamming chat in populated zones (Lions Arch), which doesn’t lead to anything.
Same for other big world events, like dragons, temples or all the bosses that have been improved… this is the most exciting content for me, but I rarely get to it, bc I am on a low pop server, so most of the time no one is around.
This is where the lfg tool could have stepped in perfectly.

So here is my suggestion how this could work:
There should be a specific tab for the map you are currently in. Once a group event starts it is automaticly listed. you can click something like “join event” and it will either: create a new group (if there is none) or join an open group that has free slots. this should work cross servers (this is the most important thing on this point) to give higher chances of finding people (even better if there was a checkbox, where you can enable/disable cross server matchmaking)
additionaly, the 2nd button should be someting like “create custom event”. this is for people who want to build a group (or look for one) that wants to do other content that is not tied to specific events, like farming champions, leveling groups ect.
Overall this would not add much complexity but ALOT more utility and make certain content way more accessible for many people.

Deathmatch. I like DM, but I’m much more interested in objective based DM. “Go in a room and kill a dude” was fun when I was playing Doom/Quake/Unreal, but even those, as simple games, still had map control and buff/armor control. Just giving two players the same guns/armors, putting them in a room, and saying “Ok go” just isn’t as fun to play. Those other elements add a lot to the game. The most competitive/successful games in recent history all share these “secondary” objectives as well (they aren’t STRICTLY Deathmatch):

  • In CS, that was the bomb/hostages. CoD (and similar games) still retain similar objectives to this day. Killing your opponent is still integral, but the secondary objectives “force” action.
  • In RTS, it’s the resources (micro arena is fun, but it’s not nearly as fun to play or watch as having to also manage resources/scout/build the right tech, etc.). The resources force action.
  • In Mobas, it’s all about controlling lanes, pushing towers, and controlling the jungle. It’s not just “go in a room and shoot a dude with your skills”. That’s fun, but I think the other elements add more strategy and tactics to the game, and make them more fun to play.

So for us, when we’re designing game types, we’re thinking about these things. DM is still a fun and exciting part of conquest, but I know you guys want more – we’re working on it.

Yes, I think most players (incl. myself) who repeatedly request a DM mode subconciously do want secondary objectives in a DM mode. I think no one realy wants a pure DM mode in the style of Quake or UT, bc it just doesn’t fit.
I think what we want is a mode that has more focus on killing than conquest does. Bc even conquest in gw2 is so different than it was in WoW for example.
You can’t just hotjoin and run around the map and focus on killing people as much (as you easily could in WoW, no matter what battleground you play) The reason for one part is that maps are “small” (for lack of a better word). I don’t mean they are too small, I mean the time it takes for you to move from A to B, while A being the point where you are engaged in a fight and B the point where an objective is at. So you are drawn to the objectives and automaticly focused on the conquest gametype. The gameplay feels like it wants you to avoid fights unless they are forced on a mid point or in a 1v1/2v1 home point or far point situation. The other reason is that obviously the meta adapts to the conquest mode only, so there are bunker builds that basically can make just running around and trying to kill stuff frustrating bc there are certain combinations you just can’t kill, so what do you do? you focus on the objectives again.
This concept is ok for conquest for the most part. But the result is that the gameplay can feel dull after a while and more gamemodes are even more needed.

So what we need is a mode, where killing people has a meaning and is encouraged alongside a secondary objective. And preferably it should keep a balance between teamfights and 1v1 situations making both meaningful so that they mostly aren’t being avoided.

And why no real arena mode, with 2v2, 3v3, 5v5 matchups on specifially designed maps?

And why is splitting up the playerbase a bad thing? As far as I can see it’s only bad if you have a small playerbase, but if it is large enough it shouldn’t be a problem. Many players just have different tastes. So why not let everyone focus on what they want? The fear might be that too few people play conquest anymore if there is another mode, but this might only be a problem in the short term. If sPvP offers a broader experience overall with a variety of different modes then things will even out on the long term imo.

I don’t know what to do anymore…

Edit: oh and ofc I used the repair function several times.. after that I can play for I while but the client crashes sooner or later.

does it make any difference if I run gw2 from a different partition/hdd? (that’s the one thing I could try)

so here is the latest crashlog.

sPvP orrian weapons icon vs PvE equivalent

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Ok I got my first pvp orrian weapon today… and I was pleasently surprised: what a cool icon! the pve equivalent from arah has only the default weapon icon. why is that? I have the pve version for a very long time and it’s always been this way.. is this intended? looks too me like it’s a mistake that is easy to fix. the game somehow cannot find the real icon and just uses the default placeholder.
If it’s intended, then it’s just a shame bc arah weapons are quite hard to get and I often find myself confusing them when selling stuff with greens and blues

Ok how exactly are the votes counted?

I turn in the support tickets for tokens for the guy I wanna support. But appearently I can support both. So I assume many players will do both achievement categories just for the achievement points.
But how do I support the candidate I actualy want after I got all the achievements?
Is it enough to trade tickets for tokens or do I have to constantly use them and keep support active and do stuff even after I have the achievements? Or does my support stop after I have the achievements and I shouldn’t even do the ones for the candidate I don’t want?

The Chatbox should not be part of a bossfight

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: kiyue.5817

kiyue.5817

I do agree. Prelaunch they advertised a lot that they put a lot of effort into the combat visuals to make sure that the player does not play with the UI (bc they learned from that mistake from gw1) and rather can always pay attention to what actualy is going on.
I can imagine many ways how they could have made it visualy clear that the boss is detonating the mines without resorting to a plain text in the chat. that’s just boring and actualy the fight (5-man) is very frustrating. Not bc it’s hard, it’s exactly bc you can’t really recognize what the boss is actualy doing at all time and when you look at the chat you find yourself easily walking into a mine.

Arenanet.. I don’t know how you got on that train to rush out content so frequently. But I’d rather wait 1-2 months longer and have higher quality stuff.

Cooking vs other proffessions

in Crafting

Posted by: kiyue.5817

kiyue.5817

I think this might have come up before, but why is cooking so different to other proffessions? I mean, in a good way.

I remember cooking was there first proffession I was testing in beta and I was like wow, the crafting system is amazing. It is non linear, almost all recipes have to be found or you have to figure them out yourself.

But when I saw the other proffessions on release I was kinda dissapointed. They are linear and on the whole just slightly better than in your average mmo. But why?

I imagine having them setup the same way as cooking wouldn’t hurt the game at all and make them alot more interresting. You could add hidden recipes with a low drop chance for rare items, which you can either find or figure out yourself.
That would make those items alot more valuable and crafting more fun.
ofc you could look them up after a while, but the proccess of discovering all hidden recipes for the community as a whole is still better as having them simply in a list right from the start. Also there could be more recipes added over time just like it happened for cooking.

Some combat sound effects don't play?

this is happening for me since closed beta. It seems like in certain situations the client takes forever to load combat soundfiles or doesn’t load them at all, especially when you rapidly jump from mob to mob with shadowstep or something.

I played around with the soundquality settings or mixing buffer size setting but it doesn’t seem to have any effect on this issue.

it’s not game breaking, but a very annonying issue. I quite like the sounds in gw2 and this kills the immersion very often.

I was looking around the web for a fix but not much luck there.
