[Suggestion] Friends Categories

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashantara.8731

Hello all,

I was just going through my friends list and realized that in some cases I couldn’t recall who that person was. I sometimes add players that I grouped with in PvP, but then I don’t see them online in a while and forget who they are.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to put people into (self-created or predefined) categories, so that you remember in which game mode you added them or who they are in general?

I mean, close friends (RL) you’d remember of course, also guildmates (as you can see them in the Guild panel), but in cases of random players you encountered or people who have been absent for a while it is really hard. Friends categories would make it a lot easier to organize your friends list (PvE, PvP, WvW etc.).

Just a thought.

[PoF] New Elite Specs & core traits: Logic?!?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

And here is another reason why Elite Specs are problematic:

I am just skilling a Necromancer, and there are so many trait lines from the core traits that make zero sense to be used with Scourge, because they apply boni to Shrouds. Unless you change them all to “Shroud and Shade”, they will become redundant for new builds.

Note: I am aware that there is a shroud skill, but it’s not working like the old shrouds, so traits that give a bonus to “Shroud Skill 1” or “4” or whatever won’t work, because your skill bar does not change into new shroud skills.

So, dear devs, what are you planning to do about it? I’m curious.

P.S. How about you change/adjust core trait lines depending on the elite spec that has been selected? That would be a nice solution and make builds more diverse and interesting.

LW Season 1 had the best story

in Living World

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

Well, big mistake or not, you need to take responsibility for it and correct that mistake.

There are so many areas on core Tyrian maps that make zero sense if you haven’t played LWS1!

For instance, the poisonous field in Kessex Hill (Greyhoof Meadows) along with all the dead Seraph plasterted all over the place. Not to mention the many other poisonous spawns/events all across central Tyrian maps.

They leave that content in there without any explanation whatsoever. It’s just sad and IMO bad for the game as story continuity has been broken that way.

Equipment isn’t the key factor that makes HoT (and later content) easier to master. You need an efficient build and to train your player skill more than in the core campaign.

I remember entering HoT for the first time — I wouldn’t touch it for another six or seven months. Then, after I had played more frequently and improved my own skill at the game, I managed a lot better. By now, I regard the HoT maps easy to navigate and enemies just as easy to fight on my own, some with caution, of course. It really just takes getting used to.

I wish there were more body types in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

It would be nice, but I think Anet is unlikely to do that for a cost vs benefit reason. It would mean modifying every single piece of armor and outfit. And Anet doesn’t have the greatest track record in the armor department.

ESO can do it because it has similarly proportioned humanoid races, whereas GW2’s Asura and Charr would require very extreme sliders. And probably result in even more Charr clipping complaints.

The “cost vs. benefit” argument/excuse by Anet is getting real old.

For instance, they already have male human bodies they could scale and add to the Norn body options, so not all male Norn must look like misshaped orangutans with tiny heads, while their female counterparts all look like supermodels with flawless bodies (even the heavier ones).

I agree with the OP that there should be a wider variety of options, and it would be more desirabe new content than most of the kitten they have added in the past year.

No more kiddy dialogue, please!

That’s exactly what you’re suggesting and thank you for re-quoting the post so I didn’t have to.

Obviously, you only see what you want to see, not what was actually said. I said that the aspect of telling things in a way so that even kids (or people of low IQ) would be able to follow the story was one thing I am critizing. That has nothing to do with the use of contemporary language, which is another thing I criticize.

I don’t know how much clearer I can make this for you to understand, but I am getting the feeling that, no matter in how many different ways I am trying to explain this to you, you will always read it the way you want it so you can keep on arguing. And that is something I am not getting further into. Good luck.

Skimpy armor for male characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

As someone who plays heavy armor I wish there was skimpy armor for females.

Oh, gimme a break! There are enough “tiddy holder” sets.

Wow I thought this thread was a joke the first time I saw it.

How old are you to not understand the issue and the wish for equality?

A woman, or even some women, wanting something does not prevent it from being sexist. There are women who believe, or at least state that they believe, that women should be subbordinate to men. Sexist even if the person stating the belief is female.

Thank you. This is exactly the case.

So, as the OP already stated in their initial post, there are two options: Either stop creating armor sets where the female version does not equal the male one and is skimpy (thus sexist) in comparison (while the male couterpart fully covers the body), or start creating an equal amount of skimpy armor sets for male characters.

Hopefully mounts will make the dearth of waypoints less of a pain.

You got it all wrong: they decreased the amount of waypoints in PoF even further so you will have to use mounts, whether you like it or not.

I, too, am an advocate for bringing more waypoints back into the game, and hope there will be more in PoF than what we got to see during the demo.

Game-Breaking Bug: Bria (Iron Marches)

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

This is a game-breaking bug!

Note: Occured on EU/German server

The LWS2 story is stuck at “Plan of Attack”, which leads you into the Iron Marches, because the event (killing Bria) is currently undoable!

The Bria event is 100% bugged. (For attachments, check second reply.)

Two Shadow Fiends remain which are invulnerable to attacks. You can bring Bria down to 1% health, but she refuses to die. She just stands in front of her mansion and nothing happens. Her two remaining Shadow Fiends don’t attack, either.

P.S. People who need this event for certain legendary collections are screwed, too.

Skimpy armor for male characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

I’ve a question for those of you that are saying that the game is sexist for having some ‘skimpy’ armors for females: what do you say to female players, regardless of their own real life proclivity, that want there to be these types of armors for their female characters?

That is not the point here. The point is (a) to have alternatives, and (b) to have equality by providing the same amount of skimpy armor sets for male characters.

Which part of what the OP explained clearly did you not understand?

The armor choices for females are just awfully sexist or overly “femme” (which doesn’t fit an adventurer)!

Sorry, but, who are you to decide who or what fits an ‘adventurer’?

I did not “decide” anything, I voiced my opinion as a woman and as someone who has played a lot of RPGs (not just electronic ones).

[Spoiler] Lazarus' identity a poor plot twist

in Living World

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

That truly was the silliest idea they could come up with.

  • First they destroy classic Guild Wars by implementing gliding into basically everything (remember the days when characters used to walk?). Even story missions are now increasingly build around gliding.
  • Then they turn Guild Wars more and more into a sci-fi high-tech world (if I ever hear the words “magic” and “machine” combined again, I am going to explode like Taimi’s device).
  • And now, on top of all that, they also turn the Six, the Pantheon of Tyrian Gods, into magic-hungry jokes. For real? You could have done it the classy way, have them return to Tyria in the wake of upcoming events instead of this embarrassing interlude featuring the once proud God of War.

I am so miffed right now. What a huge disappointment, ArenaNet. (Of course, your ugly Legendary Armors and even uglier new Legendary Weapons are more important to you, as well as creating maps that have the sole purpose of farming instead of story-telling. Yes, this episode’s story didn’t do it for me at all. GG.)

Future of Guild Wars 2

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

Gee, I thought their original concept was to be innovative. I mean, that’s what they said even before the game launched. (It’s even in the Manifesto.)

They promised the personality choice you make during character creation to be developed further and become more important in future content, but instead it was canned.

They promised personalized content based on choices your character makes (and on race, which by now has been reduced to mere cosmetics), but instead they changed the direction into a one-way path for all that makes for flat boring story-telling and lacks replayability.

They introduced swimming and diving in GW2, but none of it is of importance anymore. It has become an abandoned child. Instead, they introduced a crazy amount of movement and traveling mechanics (with even more to come in the next expac) that have become the number 1 priority of “innovative” content now, when they are fitting in a 3D action platformer but certainly not in a RPG (which should have rich story-telling, well written character involvement and dialogue, and personal choices as its no.1 priority, not this kitten).

That is a pretty selfish way to look upon the problem. Just because you play this way doesn’t mean everybody else does.

I know enough people who do not do farm trains etc., because it’s repetitive, boring content (if you can call it that to begin with). For instance, I have a RL friend who is a casual player, for whom a silver coin does have value — and gold sinks make him play the game even less.

Trahearne voice actor (possible spoilers)

Ashantara.8731

I created a new character only two weeks ago and am currently playing through the original campaign again. And like all the times before, I still can’t get over the fact what an insufficient job the actor voicing Trahearne did.

I mean, he is a core character in GW2, even the most important one in the original campaign. So how come they couldn’t find a different actor or tell this guy to try express emotions? It’s the worst professional voice acting I have heard ever.

Trahearne was supposed to be an inspiring figure, motivating his troups and being looked upon as the hero he never wanted to be. Instead he is sounding like an unemotional robot, plain boring. So boring in fact that I didn’t even care much when he died.

I just checked the Wiki entry, and the actor also voiced several Asuran NPCs in the game. I can’t remember any Asuran NPC sounding like that, though (i.e., emotionless and boring).

What are your toughts on this? Do you agree or disagree, and if the latter then how come?

Legendary Armor

I was total blown away by this and wanted to ask, what did everyone else think?

I think that, instead of having animated armor (which I am certain the younger players or anime lovers will die for), I would prefer it to have the ability to apply any skin we want to it (and change it at any time) without having to waste Transmutation Charges — because I don’t want the same armor look on each character and have no use for animated armor, either (I believe that the game already has enough gimmicks that make you look “cool” and “special”, like the Nightwing shoulder skin, for instance).

An engine of existing character names in Gw2?

I wonder if there is a real money market for popular character names already. Character name grabbing exists. I actually met people who create free accounts in newly released games just to secure the name, in case they want to play it at some point.

That’s terrible. But then again, it is always more fun to use your own creations than “widely popular” names. I don’t have (and never had) a single character whom I would name after existing characters from novels, movies etc., or after real people (I was accused of being a Draco Malfoy fan, because my Ranger’s first name is Draco, but that character’s complete name I came up with in a pen & paper RPG back in 1992, which was long before Harry Potter).

Even solo PvE favours melee. Zipping madly around a foe so they’re rarely facing the right way to hit you is one of the best forms of defence.

My vanilla build condition necromancer with viper’s equipment and a staff begs to differ. I am constantly switching between ranged and melee, but a lot of the time the long ranged staff gets the job done nicely in no time without my character getting hit by any AoE.

A stress test is how well servers can handle the load of players in connection to whatever might be causing server-sided lag on the maps as well (environmental effects, skill effects and what not). In that case, maps or skill effects and the like will need to get optimized, maybe server resources need to be adjusted or upgraded etc.

How far back are we talking? WoW? EQ? UO? Muds? Most of the early games designed around quest line adventures, and you could beat content above your level if you were smart about it. Sometimes you had to farm, but usually in the context of affording an item, or finding something specific out in the field. Now days the design norm is that of a constant deficit; no matter what you are tasked with, you start at zero, and have to fight every system to make progress.

Its almost ironic that WoW not only broke the trend of how content was done, but also reestablished it in a more diabolical form. Lazy MMOs, and now lazy RPGs, use grinds as a game play element…. not a side effect of choices leading up to that point. The fact you think the two are fundamentally synonymous only shows you don’t seem to understand what any of these terms actually mean.

Thank you for this eloquent response.

I, too, find the statement “That’s what MMOs are about, so if you don’t like it, don’t play them!” rather ridiculous. An MMORPG should have the same qualities as good off-line RPGs, with the only difference being that the former is multiplayer. I had more fun playing Neverwinter Nights 1 in co-op mode with with my RL buddy than playing GW2.

An engine of existing character names in Gw2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

If they insist on everyone having unique names, I think they should add a system in which any character that has been off-line for X amount of time (a year?) has their name up for grabs, and if the name’s been taken by someone else when/if they come back online, they have to choose a new name.

That would be unacceptable. First come, first served. Not my fault if real life is keeping me away from the game for a while, why would that make me lose my name?

I haven’t had trouble so far finding suitable names, and eight of my ten characters are “newish” by GW2 standards (also, only three use names from GW1 which were reserved for me).

Alternate keyboard symbols such as ä, ü, and ö are your friends

Not a good idea, because Americans believe that doesn’t change the pronunciation, when it does, and greatly so.

As for the Pale Tree keeping the secret: had she been conscious at the time that Mordremoth’s power grew to such destructive potential, she probably would have done something about it. But being as it is, her “children” were weakened by her unconscious state. Was it wise to keep this a secret? Hard to say, but she did tell it at least one Firstborn, who unfortunately was murdered. While many of the responses have valid points of criticizing the OP, I have to agree that the OP was right on spot when they wrote:

the reason people play gw2 instead of 1 is because gw1 is ancient and is not getting updates

This.

If GW1 still continued on, I would rather be playing that at the moment, seeing as how boring GW2’s story has become, how repetitive its missions (with their “need” to provide even “more action”, like that would make them more exciting and increase quality), and how little variety the skill system allows (because it is bound to weapons, and because of the meta).

While GW2 did start out as an MMO_*RPG* (and I dearly missed the RPG aspect in GW1), it quickly turned more and more into a mere action game/hackfest with only a few bits of good story content here and there (I can count the good story content and enjoyable missions of HoT and S3 on one hand).

GW1 had the better lore, and before its release I had hoped GW2 would be an advanced GW1: more mobilty (jumping and swimming), but remaining the same at its core regarding the skill system and story-telling. And while it started out as a promising RPG, with personal story options, cinematic dialogue, and story missions that had more to offer than just fighting, it changed drastically over time. Now it truly is just action and very little fun/RPG.

Therefore, I can relate to the OP’s sentiment of missing the feeling of playing GW1, which also was an online action game, but — as stated before — with much more enjoyable content in many regards. So if I wanted action, I’d be playing GW1 — only I already played through all of its content tons of times.
