There is a whole lot of negativity floating around these forums right now. And those folks are welcome to their opinion of course.

But let me add a positive voice to the mix. I think the WvW changes in the latest patch are a step in the right direction.

I am sceptical about your use of a positive post to ask for your own changes.

I think that rams do NOT need to do more damage. They are fine. If anything, it should be HARDER to get into an objective – at the moment it is far too easy.

I think catapults are FINE. I can’t understand your bizarre, unfounded requests with no “because” attached to them, zero reasoning whatsoever.

The rest of your post I do agree with and I, too, would like to congratulate and applaud the efforts of the Arenanet staff in tackling the problems of WvW with professionalism and courageousness in the face of a hostile playerbase.

Thief stealth mechanics are getting old

No class should be able to attack, stealth when you attack them back, heal and clease while stealthed, then come out of steath and reattack you, rinse, repeat until you are dead.

I have no problem with thieves having escapability, none at all. My problem is in and out of stealth fighting bullspit. Enough, peroid. I don’t know of any other game that allows such crap. They should hit like a truck, they should be able to sneak around, they should be able to poof and escape AFTER their kill or to get out of a tough fight….but they should not be able to repeatedly re-stealth in the middle of a fight to heal and cleanse over and over, it is absolutely absurd.

/rant off….let the flaming begin

How would you feel if they left all the mechanics the same except you don’t lose target when they go in stealth?
(technically this would be an auto-reacquire of target after leaving stealth, so (like now) you can’t fire directly at stealthed target).

Collaborative Development: Commander System

Seems like people really enjoy answering questions so I’ll throw out a few more.

How big do you expect a squad to be?
What kind of content is a PvE commander most useful?
Is money a good enough gate for commander tags?

  1. 80ish is estimated to be the biggest blob I’ve seen.
  2. Community events like mining runs (daily at 7pm UK time this week starting from Paggas Waypoint – see you there!), raiding southsun Karka Queen, multiple-map epic exploration zergs, Scarlet Invasions, Living World events, etc etc.
  3. Well, Badges of Honour make more sense, as you would have to have done some WvW before becoming a commander… but IMO it’s too late to change that now.

With the last 2 in mind, it may be wise to split the commander tag for PvE from the tag for WvW.

Stunlock Needs to Go

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Svarty.8019

Stunlock is a term well known in the MMORPG communities I suggest google.

It’s been a long standing issue, it’s even a problem in PVP like why is there not a stun immunity for 5 seconds once a stun breaker is issued? Every other major mmo has put this out in their combat in PVP because some classes can chainlock players into a down position where they absolutely can’t do anything.

HoT made CC horrible in both competitive modes. I’m really surprised that the balance team has failed to correct these errors. It is the balance team which is responsible for the horrible gameplay of one player being unable to act while another whittles them down. That’s the worst kind of gameplay possible, but never seems to be addressed.

@BlaqueFyre.5678 “Quit crying and move on, WvW get more attention” WvW will not get more attention when you only have like two devs working on it which is part time and their main focus in PvE. So please hush.

You are just whining and lying when saying and I quote "while its been years WvW has barely gotten that level attention. " when the past year WvW has. Web receiving a lot of attention/overhauls/additions. And WvW will get more attention so don’t worry quit whining.

It’s undeniable that WvW has had developer attention this year, but I question developer focus when;

  1. didn’t provide features that increase a team’s ability to recover from large point disparities, and instead do the opposite (see #2).
  2. they implement things that only 13.7% of those polled requested.
  3. out off the blue they suggest open field cannons

I was encouraged when developers made the proposal for, “New Worlds”. This gave me the impression that they were trying. I was instantly discouraged when they just dismissed the whole idea after people suggested that there were problems with it, rather than discussing those problems and solutions to them.

So DPS spike classes (thief, mesmer, warrior, and some eles) prosper why classes that can’t do the massive spike as efficiently suffer.

  • Zerker specs have become the norm in PvE.
  • PvPers have gone with this concept, too, since some classes can’t effectively go to a hybrid, they have to be either tank or zerk (guardian, for example).
  • PvPers have a place doing small ganksquads and soloing tanky builds in WvW (it’s easier than fighting other PvP builds in PvP).
  • These vulture roles are perfectly valid, but IMHO the builds shouldn’t have such a dramatic effect as they do in determining whether a player lives or dies.
  • I think it should be more down to the skill of the player and not their build.

Omega golems have no place in wvw

Omegas need rebalancing, but on the evidence I’ve seen since launch, the development leadership are interested in implementing new things but not fixing broken stuff.

Well, the problem, as I see it, is when you do as you are here, and confuse your subjective opinion, with that of objective fact.

Simply because you, personally think something is broken, doesn’t make it true. Simply because they do not change the game around your personal judgments, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t implement new ideas.

While I agree that evidence is the key element here, I believe that the vast experience of the OP with Omega golems qualifies them (as most WvW regulars) as an “expert witness”. As such their opinion should carry considerable weight. Frankly, dismissing them as “subjective opinions” is both unfortunate and insulting, to me.

Should there be a season 2?

in WvW

Svarty.8019

Server: GH
League: Silver / EU
Enjoyed Season 1: No
Should we have season 2?: After a LOT of work

Unlike many respondents in this thread I remember the awful matchups before the league, where we were demolished by the #3 and #2 servers in successive weeks (we’re around #15). So the old system is a huge no-no for me. Leagues are the way to go, but need a LOT of work. Are you reading this, Arenanet? a LOT of work.

Also;

  • We were blue for 6/7 weeks.
  • We faced one of the top servers in every matchup – meaning that one of the best aspects of leagues (reduced range of servers you will face) was wasted, we never experienced it.

Things we need:

  1. Fix for nightcapping issue
  2. Fix for blobbing issue – incentivise smaller groups – (not like bloodlust, that was a huge “how not to do it”)
  3. Fix for WXP ability & Ascended powercreep (toughen walls/doors – why does Watergate inner on Garrison never upgrade? Where are the T3 doors?)
  4. Something for the lower servers in a league. Why play when you will come near the bottom? I personally believe that the lower a team comes, the better it’s reward should be.

Would the commander system be functional enough with more markers, guild only tags, less suppression, better supplyinfo, and possibly additional marker shapes?

’we can do quick fixes and then take an extended break from the topic or we can do major overhaul[..]
Pick One

I want to say quick fixes, but the (awesome) quick fixes suggested by Devon above don’t address the tag visibility functionality problem which is at the heart of the matter, for me.

I have to, therefore, reluctantly say, “major change over long time, please”.

Our guild groups want to run tags, but we’re running with targets because tags are borked. One fix for this might be the ability to assign a tag on an ally like a target marker. This seems relatively quick and easy and shouldn’t take up huge resources (right guys?).

If this happens to be easy, then I change my opinion to fully quick fixes, please.

Collaborative Development- Request for Topics

Svarty.8019

WvW:

  1. Dynamic incentive for the two “losing” sides to gang up on whoever is leading at any one time (e.g. double reward for capping things which belong to that world). And/or making life more difficult when you are leading, examples: fewer guards, shorter timers on siege, disabled waypoints (this should vary depending on how much % you are leading by, so if you are leading by a little, life should be a little more difficult, when leading by a lot, life should be a lot more difficult – as you get reigned in, life becomes less difficult).
  2. Balance between;
    a. Slowing down the highly mobile megablobs – (for example, disable waypoints if you are leading) and,
    b. Making it possible to get people to objectives in order to man siege before the door is gone.
  3. Make objectives more interesting. Give the Lord some character (a name, perhaps with a random buff which that Lord always gives), perhaps change the models. Perhaps give each world a unique Keep skin (perhaps asking for a too many Anet resources), or give each of the three borderlands different terrain textures. Maybe give us keeps that get taller when upgraded. Maybe add unique things that each objective can do, for example, upgrade an aspect of a golem (could be anything; more DPS, longer shield/shield that works against carts, etc etc – to stop it being OP give it an “upgrade golem over time” element). Also, what happened to tier 3 doors?

Here's how to fix WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

I disagree with all of the suggestions on the OP’s post. Every single one.

  • I believe there should be an allegiance system.
  • I think there should be better and more interesting upgrades available at a keep, things that make you want to keep it. This way servers can say “we concentrate on keeping this keep, and the others can be wooden” etc. Perhaps make it so that only certain keeps can get certain upgrades to encourage this “choice” aspect [edit: on second thoughts, this is an awful idea]. One example: Golem repair/upgrade workshop.
  • It’s my opinion that there should be a set number of guards for each realm and that number should get recalculated at tick depending on the following rule: The number of guards you have should be spread across your currently held objectives. This will make it less likely that one side will be focused down to nothing, and much more difficult for the enemy to do so.

Ive spent a long time hoping GW2 would bring a challenge. Two years of playing and the main reason im still here isnt that im having the time of my life, no. Its that im keeping the story fresh in my mind, participating in events that ANET throws at me in the hope that sometime in the not so distant future ANET will bring content that isnt just handed to us on a plate, with a side order of gem store.

I disagree. While the reward is great, I think the Crown Pavillion stuff is TOO much effort. You have to learn the individual tactics of approx 8 bosses, then grind some zerker gear and make a DPS spec to beat the timer. While certainly challenging, this isn’t my idea of fun.

Relinking "every two months"

But I think the largest problem here is one of perception. Our Fair Weathers stop playing the moment it looks like a match is going against them, thus drying out the numbers. While the fair weathers of the winning side obviously keeps going.

I would propose that the solution should be to again modify the scoring system. If it were possible to recover a losing game or to gain some kind of benefit when there is one dominating force, then I believe people might be more keen to stick around.

This solution would ideally apply not only to the whole one-week span of a match, but also moment-by-moment. HOW this happens is a matter for the developers to achieve, but the problem of, “oh we’re wiping over and over? I won’t bother then”, is ubiquitous.

Defensive Siege is the ONLY game-changer.

in WvW

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

I began thinking about what the point of a keep was in GW2.

There seem to be only two advantages of a keep (aside from scoring):
1) To gather otherwise scattered people in a known area to combat an enemy force (or zerg, if you must). A counter-zerg.
2) To be able to predict that the enemy force will do a specific thing (i.e. we know that their objective is to attack the Keep Lord) and by knowing this set up siege against it.

If your gathered people[sup]1[/sup] are significantly outnumbered, you tend to lose, regardless of which side of the wall you are on.

This is where siege comes in. Defensive siege is the game-changer, but the surrounding circumstances often mean that it is not constructed (lack of supply camps, lack of carried supply, lack of willingness to “waste” blueprints, lack of faith in your already mentally-battered comrades).

When defensive siege is not built, it is the case that in the words of the famous meme: stronger side is stronger. This is very much a case of snowballing, the rich becoming ever richer, trickle-up economics, a self-fulfilling prophecy, take your pick.

The ONLY way to flip the odds is with defensive siege (mainly ballistas). Learn it, use it, always and often.

I wonder, though, whether it is too expensive in terms of supply requirements or too rare in it’s drop-rate that people cling onto it as though it is precious – more so on the servers who lose a lot because they get destroyed in the jumping puzzle.

[sup]1[/sup]I am aware that some teams can beat “zergs” with their “l33tskills”[sup]2[/sup], but these tend to be in the minority and that’s fine.

I was on a tanky reaper, so I didn’t die instantly.
And it was 52 stacks.

Did you get enough time to send them to an enemy, though?

No, I only had time to lose 2 health bar and die.

I wasn’t even using plague singet, so it’s not like I was drawing all the condi on to me

That’s my point.
The whole of competitive play in GW2 looks like it was supposed to be about dodging well telegraphed attacks, with lots of counter play and long fights.

Sadly the system has failed since day one because players learned to eliminate the counter-play aspect via spike/burst rotations. This includes Condition damage, which is now just another form of spike/burst damage.

I wanted to add my voice to the concerns of other members of the community. Something feels… off.

I hate Hodgins more than Trahearne. Please swap him with a clone of Detha so she can BUILD the scepters herself and kick kitten with them in his place.

This sort of nonsense makes players look silly. “Hate”? Really? How can you have so much bile for simple, friendly NPCs? Maybe you should go for a walk.

Why does WvW feel bad?

i.e. Forget what exists and make a new system. That’s how development goes with Guild Wars 2, if you hadn’t noticed.

Development by accretion its a clear philosophy from anet and a poor one. There’s a good extra credits episode on it.

Googled it, thanks.

Solution to fix the population imbalance

I believe this idea would go a long way towards making the game fun again:

  • Incentivise two losers to attacking whoever is leading at any one time. It must be possible
  • replace the ability to build waypoints with something else – golem siegeworks or something. Big blob thrive on mobility
  • give each server a set number of guards at any one time. This number should be as it is now- BUT when a side captures another objective, they have to lose some guards from other objectives to guard the new one. This way, the more things you have, the fewer guards at each thing. The fewer things you have, the more guards at each thing. This makes it more and more difficult for enemies to capture objectives — The point I would make is that we haven’t seen how effective guards can be in massive numbers.

Why do you think there are three sides instead of two? It’s not random.

Working as intended, nothing to see here. Move on, move on.

This seems like an idea for a completely new game. Good luck with it.

No.

Because rewarding map blobbing, coverage and transfers is wrong.

I think the vision/intent for WvW was somewhat different.

Issue with GW2 is CC’s last a split second, but can be cast one after the other in a split second too.
So, with your resistance thing, you won’t be victim of… what ? 1/3 of CC’s cast at you ? That leaves you vulnerable for the rest of time.

So, I join my voice to Solstace’s : CC should be strategic, and not spammable. CC should disrupt the fight pace, and not forbid the fight.

I agree with your overall sentiment, but even if one only resists 1/3 of CCs, that’s far better than what we have now (i.e. a CC dump then a huge damage spike while you can’t dodge).
