its probably coming out with expansion #2

I think that got cancelled years ago.

Anet has spent considerable time and resources creating a bunch of new maps that are leading the story to face off against Jormag and Primordius. You KNOW this setup is to sell more boxes of the next expansion: GW2 Of Fire and Ice or something.

That’s what people expect, but I’m not betting on it.

I know nothing. They’ve said nothing. Expect to get… NOTHING. Unless information to the contrary comes forth, I expect an eternity of small content patches until the game folds.

Economy Statistics

Svarty.8019

I don’t know why people here think they know more about the economy than an economist.

A couple reasons, but the main reason is that the study of economics is the study of human behavior and psychology and as such, it is imperfect, incomplete and subject to very different interpretations and perspectives.

It’s the voodoo witch doctor profession of our age.

This is very far from the truth.
Even more so inside of MMOs where there is complete data.

This claim, despite a strong effort to assert authority as a developer, is wrong.

As someone who worked in the financial sector, I will give you this example: I’ve spoken with technical analysts from the top banks and the whole profession is basically nonsense. In one breath the banks tell us that “past performance is no guarantee of future results” and in the other they claim that market “trends” are predictable – Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci_retracement. Technical analysts regularly conjure new mathematical formulae and tools (e.g. candlesticks/clouds) to give themselves the appearance of magicians and keep their profession alive. It’s absolute claptrap.

The only way in which trends are predictable is that all of the technical analysts are working from the same text books.

Let’s Talk Scoring…

in WvW

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

Ah yes, you’re right. Skirmishes help reduce the impact nightcapping.

Sadly, the score disparity is not often enough impacted by nightcapping anymore. This appears to have clarified that many matchups are blowouts due to across-the-board dominance via map coverage/overall population thanks to server stacking.

Despite my many criticisms, I appreciate that Arenanet have made efforts towards solving these issues.

I am inclined to agree with one commentator who suggested blowing up WvW. Even Arenanet suggested doing so: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/New-Worlds/first

Only Siege Should Damage Walls/Doors

in WvW

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

WvW is having issues with the damage creep.

Even tier3 doors and walls can’t prevent a determined group from standing in a safe-spot and using weapon skills to destroy a door.

This is a problem because THERE IS NO COUNTERPLAY.

There are many ways this issue can be solved. One solution might be to redesign every objective so that it is much easier to hit people using siege without the siege being killed by Meteor Shower.

The solution I propose is to have only siege damage the doors and walls. This way we can play the siege/countersiege game instead of having to endure balling up target-cap exploits.

As a member of a small guild who does 99.9% wvw activites, we would like to thank Arena Net for giving us a reason to try and defend towers/keeps/forts. As previous DaoC players we appreciate what Epic wvw battles can be, and watching zergballs take keeps in under a minute is NOT it. Im sure there will be a vocal minority desperate for wvw exp who can only think of how they are inconvenienced by having to think, or use counter siege. But on behalf of the silent majority, I would like to say…. suck it up princess.
I would like to see the carts damage become immune on a keep door however as it seems silly that AC’s should take place of rams.

I’m very disappointed that a guild who claims to do so much WvW had trouble defending before as most guilds find it easy. It was very easy and if you really need these new arrowcarts to do it, I suggest you take a look at your tactics.

Is it just me, or have VoTF complained more vocally than anybody else about this change? I believe the OP has a very strong point, and to see a quality guild (effectively) telling him to L2P seems to tarnish their image somewhat in my mind.

Are Anet trying to destroy WvW for good?

in WvW

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

Hi Tich

I don’t have solutions, I wish I did which is a shame for a game with so much potential and as I will be the last to leave the server as far as WvW is concerned, I will make sure to turn the light off

  • It’s not your job to have solutions, it’s Arenanet’s responsibility to NC Soft.

Spin off WvW into a separate game and take on the likes of CU, you have more than a head start on the competition and there are still plenty of people who would buy the game. If CU can raise over $3 million for a concept there must be something in the format.

  • I don’t think CU is seen by Anet as a competitor for GW2. It’s my assertion that Mike O’Brien thinks that because the payment models are different, the player bases will be. I think he will be surprised when a lot of the WvW guilds (emphasis on “whole guilds full of players”) show him that they are willing to pay a subscription fee and move over to (at least try) CU.
  • I believe the reason Mike thinks WvW players like PvE is because they do it to suppliment their WvW play – for example, players might do PvE to get cool-looking gear to take into WvW, or to craft-up some food pots for WvW, or simply to earn gold to spend in WvW. Of course, there are some players who simply like to WvW because it adds variety to their PvE lives, but I consider them to be the minority (of WvW players), not the other way around.
  • Having said all of this, it’s clear that the WvW population is considerably smaller than the PvE population – you only need to look at the number of players on each map. You’re looking at what… 100-200 players in total per server at prime time? So although we consider ourselves to be quite a considerable number, we are like the GW2 of NCSoft’s income. Tiny.

I believe that Stealth is a huge issue for video games. It causes more aggravation, frustration and disappointment than any other power – in ALL games, and understandably so.

It is very rare to find a thief so skilled as to shun Stealth entirely. I have heard tell of such amazing players, but that when they were threatened by a large group of players, they resorted to Stealth to escape. Which illustrates how ridiculously powerful Stealth is.

Counterplay is vital to making games fun. Stealth takes away counterplay, therefore Stealth is the opposite of fun.

I like 211, but in many matches the disparity in manpower between first and second seems so great that second and third will never win a skirmish except, perhaps, in a nightcap.

This is a direct result of server stacking and can only be resolved by a solution which addresses it.

  • I fear that many good scoring ideas will go by the wayside because they won’t work while server stacking/population/coverage (call it what you will) exists, no scoring system can overcome it.

WvW - Squad Improvement

in Suggestions

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

Here are my three ideas for improving Squads

1. Each commander is allocated a unique colour for their icon randomly on flag-up.

2. Squad Campaign Icon – Commander chooses from a pallet of mini-icons. This icon floats near each person in the squad like the Ellen Kiel/Evon Gnashblade supporter icon. Everybody can see people in other squads’ icons. This icon is the same colour as the commander tag.

3. Minimap dots for ONLY people in a squad are the same colour as the commander tag. (make commander icons always appear above normal dots, maybe put a border around the icon to make it stand out).
This doesn’t result in rainbow map as there are only ever two colours – the colour of the commander, and all the normal pale greens.

Changes wvw needs - let's be constructive

in WvW

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

There is a lot of ideas on the forums for changes wvw needs (and some that it doesn’t need) and I think we should get a bit more constructive if we want to be heard.

Many, me included, don’t believe Anet will ever hear the wvw players, but we can at least try and see for ourselves. So, let’s do this.

Everyone feel free to add some points you think are necessary to make wvw a better game mode

General changes:
- the algorithm Anet uses to determine which server is full and what servers get links
- a transfer lock after recent transfers
- loyalty bonus for staying on servers

Changes on the mechanics:
- lower siege cap
- lines of sight

Quality of Life changes:
- templates to load for switching gear and builds

Balancing for wvw:
- stealth rework in wvw or reworked revealed buff
- deathly chill internal cd?
- condition apply from mesmer rework
- defender runes, perplexity runes rework

Any other ideas? Feel free to post them, I’ll add everything to the list and feel free to discuss it – in a friendly manner

IMO:

  • transfer windows -you can only transfer server in the second half of a link-period -this prevents the gaming of the link system, where bandwagoners move to the low-ranking partners to play in top tier after links are announced, ruining the good intentions of the matchup system
  • rework/removal of Immobilise - this condition should be removed or replaced. It is the total opposite of fun
  • reduction in all damage numbers across the board;
    • People are dying far, far, far, far, too quickly (when not immune). Combat is a case of frantic button mashing, and simply isn’t as prolonged or as fun as it should be.
    • People aren’t dying fast enough! Some classes (hello Berserker) have too many immunities. These should be normalised.
  • deletion of The Thief. You know it’s necessary, don’t even try to defend this perversion!
  • Towering towers. A spiral staircase upgrade for towers that has a platform on top. This can then have siege built upon it (nice for ACing from high up or trebbing hills -or the keeps on Desert Borderland map (I know I keep suggesting this, but it still seems like a cool idea to me. Make towers great again!
  • Golem Garage. Customise golems with various weapons, flamethrower, chainsaw etc -give it custom paint job, a name – recover scraps of destroyed golem to rebuild it using crafting. Can be quite an expensive exercise because customising is FUN.

Please stop crying about 'impossibru dungeons'

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Svarty.8019

Svarty.8019

I see both sides of this coin.

I will compare these dungeons with raiding in WoW, which had the following characteristics;

  • Required preparation. Such as;
    • reading about the encounter on the internet,
    • gathering of +resist gear,
    • running Onyxia for the key to BWL,
    • potions.
  • Had to work out a strategy,
  • Had to learn to do the strategy,
  • Wipe-nights were regular (if one person messed up once, it was often a wipe),
  • Painful, dull and work-like.

Back in the present, and while many of these elements are gone, reading about the encounter on the internet is still the best preparation you can do. Even if you are going to ignore the advice that someone else has written, amend it, or append it, it is still a good source of information, such as;

  • what the encounter does,
  • what elements are there in the room,
  • what should be avoided (and what happens if you don’t).

Ultimately, I think runs such as Arah are simply too much for the humble PUG at the moment. In time, and without nerfs, the Giganticus Lupicus strategy will become well known and well practiced, and he will bend to our will, but for the moment, the immediately-after-launch moment, when all else is crumbling before us, he rules supreme!

Those who have mastered Arah have won the (PvE) game. Congratulations, now go and play WvW because that’s where the end-game is!

There should be more incentive for WvW.

in WvW

Maybe make the Dolyaks move faster per nearby ally, increased by up to ten allies. There would be incentive to guard them since it is helping your team overall even if you are not participating in big fights/being in other areas.

Conversely there would be more incentive for the other team to split up into small teams to stop these faster dolyaks

The issue is not about an in-game reason to defend them, it is about the way we actually determine who has defended them. Currently, you can get credit by standing near them when they finish. That is clearly not a good platform for delivering rewards.

Checkpoints? Small reward per checkpoint… adds up to big reward overall, standing at one point gives only 1 small reward, so… no biggie, right?

Does it take the resources of an expansion budget to totally rework an ability?

Irenio CalmonHuang

We’re able, but it is a question of time tradeoffs.
- Tweaking something requires quite a bit of testing to see that it will not have dangerous consequences.
- Re-working something entirely requires even more testing for those dangerous consequences as well as functionality and potential bugs.
If it is needed and we have the time resource then we’ll do a re-work, but we’ll use tweaks when they’re deemed sufficient.

Personally, I’m super super disappointed in Arenanet after so many years of failing to address huge problems with the combat system and touting it around as the best in the genre. I find it laughable that they even host tournaments of this rubbish!

What Na said. Producing new content for a once a year festival is a wasteful use of resources, considering they have LS3 and an expansion to work on.

I disagree. If Anet put more festivals together, it wouldn’t have to pour so much effort into getting The (IMO tedious, one-dimensional and confusing, now that lots of it is hidden away in Raids) Living Story out so often.

I remember vanilla WoW had festivals very often and they repeated them each year. It worked brilliantly and kept people interested because although the content was the same every year, it was different every few weeks.

Regarding this year’s new stuff, I’m actually impressed that there’s so much. IMO the cost of some items is extortionate, however.

Who romps through the woods and ranges across open lands in a coat that gets caught on every passing branch and stick?

And who the heck tinkers around in a workshop in a coat that’ll get stuck in a turret gear and pull you into the machinery?

And who the heck tries to break into places with a big ruffly coat that makes noise and restricts stealthy movement?

Heck, the tattered long coats seems to fit a trapper/hunter/mountain main kind of look more than anything else, seems like they’re meant for rangers.

In other words, the coats fit NO class, knock it off, art team!

Are you guys trying to apply logic to a FANTASY game?

Let me remind you of this female armour that leaves exposed some of the most vulnerable parts of the body.

I’m not defending the proliferation of one type of armour, but if you are suggesting that it should be changed on the grounds of REALITY, you should consider thinking of a another reason.

Curious why more people don't PvP or WvW

WvW has been and will be dead for a looooooooong time until the devs decide to actually take some initiative and redesign how worlds work and what they actually want it to be useful for.

If I read the post from Stephen Clarke-Willson (11 mothns ago, it’s now 1st Feb 2017) correctly, they’ve redesigned the whole of WvW, but gave up implementing it after a few small patches:

SCWPhD

We got into a pattern where we wanted the WvW update to be super awesome, a “2.0” version, and it kept growing in size and complexity, which took longer, and fans were waiting, and so we wanted it to be more awesome, and rinse, repeat… As Mo said, we need to clear out the log jam, so we’re going to focus on ship-able pieces, even if that means we do some rework later. And we’ll get each piece onto the Live servers as soon as possible.

Q:

Maybe it’s just me but with the increased loot drop, I’m afraid globs of ectoplasm are going to start dropping in price what do you guys think?

A: Supply & Demand.

Please proceed to close this thread, thanks.

If you closed every thread that could be explained away with “Supply and demand”, half the forum would be empty.

Let’s speculate:

  • I think ectos should be super-cheap because they drop all the time from world bosses now. Supply increased.
  • I think ectos should be expensive because they are required in nearly every top-tier recipe. Demand increased.
  • I think ectos should be expensive because people are going for more than one Legendary/demi-Legendary weapon now. Demand increased.
  • I think ectos should be cheaper because people are giving up on Legendary weapons because of other difficult-to-acquire components. Demand lessened.

We could go on and on. Let’s!

Why is silk going up in price?

You don’t micromanage markets to maintain equilibrium.

Do you think the alteration of the number of silk scraps required per bolt could be perceived as micromanagement?

Rifle Thief: how does it make you feel?

Again SR will not break a Rifle on Thief especially since Any good player can force reveal a Thief in SR with any number of Cc affects or Reveal skills.

It’s telling, in itself, that you feel a need to churn out such a high volume of posts claiming that the thief is actually vulnerable after all. That says everything really.

WvW won't become what we hoped it would

Dear Eclipses.7152,

I took the liberty of rewriting your post with a more positive spin. I hope this meets with your approval.

WARNING: LONG POST, but worth it. see TL;DR for major points
TL;DR:
1. Commander needs improvement (I believe some is in the works).
2. The roles/rewards/recognition of Guilds in a game called ‘Guild Wars’ is in need of a buff.
3. There need to be more (a LOT, LOT LOT more) advantages for running in smaller groups.
4. Implement more Rewards/Progression/Depth/Consequence (I believe this is being worked on so I will skip it and reassess it after it’s patch is done).
5. We humnbly request some WvW dev interaction with the community.

Hey all,
1. Commander needs improvement (I believe this is being worked on so I will skip it and reassess it after it’s patch is done).

2. The roles/rewards/recognition of Guilds in a game called ‘Guild Wars’ is in need of a buff.
The buffs and the siege weapons you can get from the guild upgrades are great, truly they are, but we could have MORE! BETTER!
If we take bay, garri, sm or what have you – it would be good if it would have something to do with our guild as well as our banner hanging from some parapets. We would like others to be able to see whose banner that is! The NPCs should be named after us! Maybe we should get influence or gold or karma over time for holding onto an objective! Perhaps it should announce in map chat that xxx guild has captured and claimed xxx objective! We should have a system that allows us to form groups larger than 5 or at the very least see all guildies on the map! There could be a mechanic that recognizes guild achievements in WvW! There should be something that truly benefits WvW guilds and significantly encourages guilds in this gameplay!

3. There need to be more (a LOT, LOT LOT more) advantages for running in smaller groups.
Zergs are a valid tatic – they shouldn’t just be the ONLY tactic. AoE limit needs to be lifted/increased and some other mechanics need to go into place to dull the power of zergs and ecourage more tactical play.

4. Implement more Rewards/Progression/Depth/Consequence (I believe this is being worked on so I will skip it and reassess it after it’s patch is done).

5. We humnbly request some WvW dev interaction with the community.
Mike Ferguson and his team now know how popular WvW is. Now would be a good time to appear more committed to Wvw. We see lots of stuff about PvE and sPvP, please can we have some about WvW?

-Thanks for implementing paid transfers. We are looking forward to seeing how the ladder settles.
-Thanks for working on culling. We really appreciate that this is a very difficult bottom-up process and that you guys are -working your kitten off on it.
-Thanks for fixing the Dolyak exploit.
-Thanks for removing the Orb exploit. It would be great to see them back and working again someday.
-It would be great if WvWers could earn ascended gear (I believe this is being worked on so thanks in giddy anticipation).
-The effectiveness of non-zergs needs to be improved. Improved AoEs for outnumbered groups/sides might be one avenue for you to consider.

It would be great if Arenanet might consider new/different maps/mechanics that would not benefit the one-big-zerg strategy.
Please make some lore up to explain World vs World and connect it story-wise to PvE.
