Super Gear Grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

People always complained about how WoW had this horrible endless gear grind that was the source of all evil in the world. However as far as I can tell GW2 has a much longer, less rewarding and more frequent gear grind then WoW ever had.

In WoW you got a new set of gear every ~6 months. It all launched at once and it came with the introduction of 1-2 new raids each containing 8-12 bosses. It took 2-3 weeks to figure out the strategies and then another 2-3 weeks to get them down pat. By that time you had about 1/3 of your new gear. Then it took another 3-4 weeks of farming the raids to complete your gear set. All told it took ~8 weeks to get the new gear but you also got dozens if not hundreds of hours of new gameplay, new story lines, and new mechanics from the raids.

Switch over to GW2… here we have released new gear every 3 months, it came with NO new content at all. Was put on a gear grind that takes 2-3 weeks PER PIECE and does not even really require playing the game, just the market, and worst of all it doesn’t even make you hardly any more powerful in PvE since the game is so poorly balanced.

So why is it that WoW’s model was the root of all evil yet GW2 is claimed to not have a gear grind? As far as I can tell GW2 is 10x more of a gear grind then WoW was and it doesn’t even come with new content to make it exciting.

We do not need a 5% boost to stats, acquired through being rich or being dedicated to grind.
Stats on all equipment should’ve stayed as exotics.
What we really need is what was promised, end game cosmetic grind.
In Guild Wars 1 we had Obsidian armour, an elite area with very nice and prestige armour for all professions that costed a hoard in comparison to other armours.
Ascended armour could’ve been the same, even if was still acquired through crafting and boxes.
A beautiful addition of new armours that shone over the rest and gave you that unmistakable look.
You wouldn’t have players feeling like they are grinding for the stats because, even though the argument that you don’t need to have it, it is still an edge (of 5%).
It’s a choice if you really like the look, and if you don’t you’re not missing out on anything.
Infusions at this stage are pointless.
What could’ve happened was to have only Agony Infusions.
Infusions that don’t give anyone a stat bonus over anyone else, just something that allowed you to progress further in fractals.
Infusing your armour, weapons, trinkets w/e could have required Fractal relics, shards, globs and mist essences. Not stacks of ecto and other t6 mats.

Put your time and efforts in to expanding the game’s beauty, tidying up combat systems and content rather than implement new problems that need balancing and upsetting the progression people had already paid/worked for and peaked at.

I won’t speak for everyone but when I gear a character I want to play it, appreciate it, and get better at playing it. I don’t want to play it spending my time trying to get more stats.

Because ANET abandoned the development of GW1 to make a better game based on the same principles – no grind for stats, cosmetic endgame, good and engaging pvp.

Instead why dont the people that want vertical progression and all that go back to WoW?

I started since head start of the game.
I used to log on every day to do the dailies.
I used to care about getting every achievement point I could.
I’ve obtained the commander feature.
I’ve hit 80 on eight characters.
I’ve crafted 5 ascended weapons for my main.
I’ve crafted a legendary for my main.
I’ve reached the top 700 in achievement points.

Then the fractal revamp hit. Then come the ascended armors.

Now I’ve stopped caring. I’m losing interest.

Because I do not want to even think of farming for different tiers of cloth from mobs for ascended armors. Because I no longer want to repeat content I’ve done a thousand times before for an insignificant reward.

This has become a Korean grinder. I’m now struggling to log in.

I understand some like the moneys, and other need their dragonite ores… But come on its being a year since ive faced challenging or “fun” pve content in this game.

I enjoy SAB and WvW till some extent, but doing the same dungeons over and over for the same crappy rewards, waiting months to see a Xmass event, just to find out everything is a copy paste from last year.

PvP is challenging and social, even if you like to run dungeons, are you suposed to have only 4 friends? because even if you run dungeons all day you can only invite this amount of people.

Im not bashing anyone here, if you manage to enjoy the pve content I envy you, people work hard for doing Arah solo runs or lvl 49 fractal, which arent not just boring but also unrewarding, why not give this people an award, instead of giving out shiny stars for completing the crappy world completion which isn´t challenging, just boring.

Get Rid of Upgrade Gold Costs

in WvW

Posted by: styx.7294

styx.7294

I’m not trying to whine here, I just wanna throw this idea out there.

I’m on a low tier server so I can only speak to my experience. Only a very small percentage of people upgrade. There’s very few upgrades to do and so only a few people pay for it. On my server there are some heroes who watch over the keeps and stuff and pay for upgrades. Usually commanders. If 99% of WvW players don’t start an upgrade durin the week, I wouldn’t be surprised.

As a result, upgrades as a gold sink is a weird gold sink:
-falls on a small subset of WvW players
-as a result only removes a small amount of gold supply from that small percentage of players (I imagine upgrade costs per week per server are a very small percentage of even the gold earned in WvW)
-which means it somehow punishes what should be a lauded gamestyle
-and ultimately, is never a factor in whether an upgrade gets started or not (it’s all a matter of supply)

If we got rid of it, I just think it would improve life. It’s not going to make anyone rich but would be one monkey off our backs.

Beyond the terrible season 1, I think a great deal of the population couldn’t handle the rewards anet gave out to everyone.

The maps have been repeating itself for 1 year with no additional strategies or items, or even unique rewards. PVE always comes first and WvW comes later. My experience with things has been mostly awful, simply because it’s either a population imbalance or zerg pvd.

Can we have better ideas and rewards to get more people to play wvw? And stop rewarding us with absolutely dismal loot, I think tons of us have made it clear into the 400+ posts topic.

I was really looking forward to this since I like to change my look and use the traveler runes. The price on this is too high. I do not know how you decide the prices to use but if it is cheaper for me to buy a new set of runes- any rune available on the tp- then to use this I do not see the purpose. Even if I where to use it to remove a sigil from a weapon for 250 gems it is still considerably more expensive than to buy any sigil on the tp. I am not sure how the prices are determined for these kinds of things but if you are wanting to get cash money from people it should be a some sort of savings.. not cost more to use it.

Just my thoughts on it.

Most of the complaints for GW2 consist of:

1. Temp content
2. Lack of character progression (horizontal or otherwise) or endgame for max level characters
3. Shallow or insubstantial lore building
4. Zerging (the ability to have open tags on mobs has been a blessing and curse for this game)
5. Lack of necessary social interaction
6. Gemstore

One change I would like. Please make it an infinitely repeating achievement! Maybe award 10 points per Gold donated?

That would just mean that the TP millionares would also have around 500.000 Achievement points without ever leaving Lion’s Arch. :P So.. No.

Achievement points are pretty much the only thing left that actually requires doing other things than playing the TP or champ train farming.

Wintersday repeat

Myst Dawnbringer.9138

I was disappointed with The whole Wintersday Event so far. And Halloween to some extent. But Halloween is a bit better because of the PvE arena which is sadly lacking in the Wintersday Event. Instead it goes back to the boring old 5 man instance.

I do enjoy the Yak Event except you have to pay for it. But you do get some nice presents.

But for the most part with these repeat events that’s what they are REPEATS. You need to build on last years event and add more to this years event. Not just add follow the yak. You seem to remove as much as you add at present. If you did all the mini’s last year you only take the deluxe Wintersday gift with 100 giant gifts in it. There is nothing special for this year.

You need to work on the idea of this is what we did this last year so how do we make it bigger and better. Instead of working on the idea that, Ok, Wintersday and Halloween are done we did most of it last year so let’s add 5 cents worth of content and move along to January 21st.

We just expect better than that from you. Also, as someone who actually buys a lot of gems. A lot of gems. I expect more of you. This game probably costs me 10 times what my monthly cost to another game is. 8000 gems is 100 dollars. A yearly subscription to the main competition was running me about 120 dollars a year.

You know.. I have a family and a full time job, and like video games. I decided to get this game cause it was supposed to be balanced. Your win/lose situation on WvWvW (I don’t play dungeons) would depend on player’s ability, not on gear.

Now all this craze about making ascended armors and weapons. I definitive DON"T have the time to farm stuff and laurels and bla bla bla don’t know what other stuff needed to make a set or a weapon. Even the hardcore gamer’s that can have the time to farm are complaining about the difficulty and the TIME to getting the mats.

Soon, lots of people that can afford to play this game all day, will have ascended stuff vs the normal players that the most they can afford is exotic.

This game is just becoming like the rest of online FARMING video games. If I wanted to do hardcore farming, I would play Farmville, for Christ’s sake.

The "Gold = Everything" Problem.

Finnway.2183

A lot of PvE players in Guild wars 2 feel like the only thing that matters is Gold. Gold can be traded in the gem shop for transmutation crystals and new skins. You need Gold to level crafting to get ascended gear, etc.

My solution to this problem is to add more Soulbound/Account-bound rewards that cannot be bought on TP with gold. (a.ka. they are RNG drops).

Of course, we already have Soulbound/Account-Bound rewards in the form of Dungeon Armor, Mystic-Forge crafts, and Cultural armor.

  • The problem with Cultural Armor is that it is bought with Gold (more of the “gold is the only thing that matters” mentality).
  • The problem with Dungeon Armor and Mystic-Forge crafts is the time-frame it takes to get these items. When the game launched it might have taken a while to get a dungeon armor-set, but now that everyone knows the dungeons you can get dungeon armor in about two weeks.
  • Mystic Forge gear, on the other hand, takes too long to get. If I played 2-3 hours a day it would take me 4-6 weeks to make the money to craft a skin in the mystic forge (and it’s more of the “gold is the only thing that matters” mentality").

My solution is to add new Soulbound/Account-bound rewards that take an “in-between” time to get. I was thinking maybe new Cultural or Class-based skins that are traded for “gift-boxes” that drop from specific events or types of content (like dungeons, fractals, or even daily activities).

This could be a method to filter people a way from gold farming by giving them a goal they cannot buy with gold. We wouldn’t feel like we have to solely focus on gold in order to progress our characters.

I was thinking maybe they could add a new armor set for each Class, and two new Cutural sets for each armor class. Once you loot a “gift box” you could take it to your race’s home-city and trade it for the skin you want.
It would take 4-6 weeks to complete a set, but it wouldn’t seems as long as a Mystic Forge skin because you’re getting it in pieces rather than all at once.

EDIT: In retrospect, this whole write up now seems pointless because this is essentially what Karma could be. Too bad they don’t have more cool things to purchase with it. And generally, things that get you Gold also earn Karma so you still have the “Gold = Everything” problem.

Like or Dislike? What’s your solution to this problem?

This game is not about out-DPSing you. It’s about out-flashing you.

Can you please turn the flag “on” for allowing them to be gifted? If people overbuy them for their friends, they can just open a support ticket. Most would look into this ahead of time anyway to make sure they’re not wasting it.

I think a lot of people need to play other MMOs to really appreciate how Anet did the Ascended and Exotic gear systems.

Not only have most of us played other MMOs, which make it very difficult for players to get “top tier” stats, a lot of us played the first Guild Wars, in which Anet wasn’t obsessed with number-chasing and made customization simple, open and accessible.

In GW1 you settled for a +29HP upgrade component if you couldn’t afford the perfect +30, and that’s if you couldn’t manage to grab a cheap unique item that came with perfect stats. You also didn’t need to carry duplicates because you didn’t need to choose between a dozen different choices of item nomenclature.

I could go on for hours, but it’s very simple: we had and loved Build Wars. Any other MMO/RPG can offer a costly game of Build Numbers.
