Now that ANet has done this twice, we’re establishing a pattern. Clearly, the pattern is that those dastardly minds at ANet occasionally give evil thank you gifts to those that have continued to support ANet NCSoft after the initial purchase. Considered yourself warned. If you don’t want the underhanded, “gifts,” you best not buy any more gems.

@Elothar, couldn’t have said it better myself.

I have my doubts about the Living Story, but here is the difference between how ArenaNet deals with content updates and how other MMOs deal with content updates:

Guild Wars 2: Every 2 weeks I can log in to the game and have something new to do. It may not be a whole lot, but it is fresh content.

Other MMOs: Once a patch hits I get a lot of new content. But after perhaps three weeks, maybe even less than two, I have already experienced all that content.
Now I have to wait about 5 months before having anything new to do.

Perhaps you don’t like how ArenaNet has dealt with the Living Story so far, but they are just getting started.
And since you aren’t paying for the game I think it is reasonable for you to be a little patient.

This almost didn’t make it into the game. The song, in particular, was a one of a few voiced-over lines that were recorded early on, before the map was fully designed. By the time I found out about it, Bloodtide Coast was already pretty far along. Needless to say, I felt it was a top-priority to get it in the game and in a place where you could definitely see it if you were paying attention. Henceforth, the friendly Penzan pirate faction was born and we designed a renown heart and a couple of events around it. Fortunately we even had a chance to have that actor come back in and deliver some additional lines to support the character.

Getting that stuff together was definitely some of the most fun I had working on the game. Devon gets a big shout out for his help there. He was building the Priory events around the same area. The tie-in with Penzan was an excellent feat of collaboration.

I tried TERA out for 3 days and came back to GW2. No shared loot, no dodging, the need to constantly turn in quests and backtrack, a vertical progression system.. All of the characteristics of a WoW clone, essentially. People claim that Guild Wars 2 has boring and stale combat, but I’d beg to disagree. Try Dark Age or GW1 out now. Both games had extremely good combat back in the day and helped pave he way for many games even now. When you go back to those games and play similar games today with similar stand-and-hack-and-slash RNG-based combat it’s boring. No fight between two people will ever be the same due to the mobility and unique situations every fight entails, yet people still complain that it’s “stale” and “bad”.

Call me a fanboy, but GW2 still outshines the majority if not allof modern MMOs of its kind.

Out of Combat - In Combat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

CMF.5461

From a design standpoint, having slower movement in combat versus out of combat creates an environment where players are encouraged to engage in the fight versus rush past everything.

Also, by limiting the speed of movement, areas designated as high combat zones (pvp maps) can be smaller while still giving the feel of distance to objectives, which creates map control.

Lastly, by creating an incombat/out of combat dynamic you create a mechanic that will cause atrophy to a large zerg group to lose numbers over time in a mobile environment where you want to weaken or delay the combat force that is marching to an objective (wvw).

The downside to these mechanics is that while you may be in combat, others may not be in combat, and they are running at full speed. This makes it feels impossible to ever run away if you have one person tagging, then the rest can catch up with ease.

Also, game play slows down making it feel sluggish as a side effect. This is good and bad, because slower combat should result in more room to make decisions for a broader demographic of people.

Is this the only mechanic that can generate these things? No, and I don’t think it is “needed” per say. I understand why they use it, but I’m sure there are better ways around it.

You guys don’t understand. You don’t want WvW to be too profitable, or it’d be filled with people that are only doing it for money, making it even harder to get together decent pugs.

Achievements are optional. You don't need it.

I like the chatter personally. Some of them make me laugh out loud every time. I can suspend my disbelief for the repatitions, maybe some of them could be put on a longer loop to reduce the chance that a character hears them more then once in the visit to the area.

Hello All

As the title says I was shocked in a good way lol. I am one of those players that just dives in and out the game. I haven’t reached max level. I really only played the game when I was bored.

I never really gave it a chance tbh because I am use to the ways of WoW

So the past couple of nights I have been logging in and trying out this living story content and I have been REALLY!!! enjoying it.

I have been playing through it and started leveling again. I am seeing the game in a whole different way. Now I am thinking “dam I missed all the other temp content” like that 8 bit world thingy, Can’t remember what it’s called.

So just wanted to post this and well done Anet. Sorry I miss judged the game.

This.

This game is potential heaven, and while they aren’t even remotely close to what they can be, they are actively striving to be the best they can (unlike most other MMO’s)!

My advice is to ignore this thread and just play the game. You really need to make up your own mind here, rather than relying on the countless conflicting opinions you’re about to receive. Fun is a subjective thing, and no one can tell you you’re having fun but you.

I just bought GW2 last week and I am absolutley nuts about it. I should’ve bought this game the day it came out! A game hasn’t enthralled me like this since WoW itself, back in 2004. Since then, WoW has been the only game that has ever held my fickle attention long enough to bring a character to max. I now intend to make GW2 my second. Thanks, ArenaNet, for making a fantastic game!

Please don’t take it away! T.T

It reminds me of the RPGs I grew up on, Legend of Zelda is a big one for this (it reminds me of Wind Waker on so many levels)

Area is designed beautifully, scavenger hunt is enjoyable, the movement abilities make everything more interesting in terms of jumping puzzles.

The freedom of movement (go where you want) is such an amazing tool to an explorer type such as myself

Please….please let it stay

Finally, a Solid Effort with this Content

The title probably sounds pretentious, but I’m being honest here. Every monthly “content” update we’ve had had no sense of wonder or discovery. (imo, mind you) It felt like nothing but a poorly made area/story just created to sell some RNG chests. But this.. this is beautiful. I haven’t even done any of the event, but I’m absorbed in the area which feels like a true “living story”, a real village/merch port. It might just be my adoration for cantha, but the landscape, NPCs, villages, stalls, everything feels crafted. It feels like they actually put effort with this one. And for that, I’m glad to be satisfied for the first time with one of their content updates. Thank you, Anet, and please stick with the team who designed this (if it’s any different), and if they’re the same, give them a big pat on the back for making some real progress in this whole “living story” thing.

Well done good design, keep thinking this way for a sucsessive game.

Too Much Temporary Content Can Only Harm GW2

Temporary content will only make GW2 refreshing, exciting, and thrive. It can’t hurt the game at all.

If this had a sub, it would be a different story.
