no, and i’d even like the numbers to be removed from the combat log and to replaced by onomatopoeic sound effects like “slash”, “kablab” ,“boom” ,“pew pew” and so on.
If some player really like numbers there is mathematics, or wow and its wonderful playerscore.
It does not suit this game. This game is designed with the idea of brining the community closer together and not splitting it up. You can see this back with the removal of kill steals and node steals. Next to splitting up the community it would make it unable for a lot of players to play the way they want to. Because it would mostly, if not only, impact the PUG part of the game. Guilds would not even worry about it, atleast mine wouldn’t. So it would impact players who do not want to or cannot commit to a guild, but do want to do a dungeon run. Next to the requests for level and classes there will be requests for gear while they want that run to gear up. And it would become the new standard. For them it would be near impossible to create a group willing to run with them. We have seen that in the history of MMOs. Even though it is not needed, people would require it from you just because they can.
And to be honest, for this game gear is so unimportant. I always have to smile at those players who think that gear in this game is a big thing for being able to finish a dungeon succesfull. Speed runs are completed thanks to good execution, not thanks to having an exotic instead of a rare item equipped.
This should not be implemented as it will result in “elitist” behaviour with any sort of group activity and encourage discrimination against sections of the community who do not have the “expected” setup.
As an example someone might want to speed run dungeons, and have it in their mind that only people setup for DPS can do speed runs efficiently so will start inspecting anyone who wants to join the party to see if they have a class cannon build or not, and remove anyone who does not.
Also, how far do you take a system like this, just armour, jewels, weapons, what about traits and skills? Implementing a partial inspect system will result in some vocal members wanting more information from the inspection.
Guild Wars 2 is about, using ArenaNet’s own mantra, playing the game the way you want, this include armour setup, weapons, jewels, traits and skills. Allowing an inspection tool would ultimately result in a reduction of variety in player builds as people will standardise their builds to what groups expect them to have.
How about if the daily was just a heart:
“play the game by dodging, crafting and killing veterans” with a bar that filled itself.
The hearts are totally grind free because you don’t have to focus on a particular thing. Some hearts I kill and kill while others I do non-killing objectives. It all depends on what I feel like at the moment.
Delayed content is eventually good. Rushed content is eternally bad. ~ Shigeru Miyamoto
In the past, I never lasted long playing MMO’s. The reason, of course, is the grind. The Guild Wars 2 people, on the other hand, have made it their mission to eliminate grind from their game. And, so far, it’s been the most enjoyable MMO I’ve ever played. However, it hasn’t eliminated grind because it still relies too much on one game mechanic: counting your activities.
The most obvious counter is the Daily. I opened up the Daily recently and the list had things like “Kill 5 veteran monsters”, “Dodge 10 attacks”, “Gather 30 items”, etc. Easy enough to do. Problem was I had no intention of crafting that particular day. I literally started dozing off trying to get enough green logs and onions and whatnot. I didn’t care what I was gathering. Yet I felt compelled to do it because there’s a counter on the right promising me some loot if I just keep going.
The Flame and Frost prelude content is better at hiding the counter, but it still has one. At first I thought I was helping a bunch of refugees. Then I found the counter in the Achievements panel that said I needed to complete 75 refugee-related things to finish the quest. Now I’m chasing a number again.
By counting activities, the game is making the player aware of repetition. By setting a specific number of times to do something and then putting a big carrot at the end of it, the game is encouraging you to grind. The consequence is that it breaks the illusion that you’re playing a role in an actual world.
So what’s the solution? The obvious and best answer is to design quests that complete based on context, not amount. You complete the quest by “killing ALL the bandits” as opposed to “killing 10 bandits”, for example. Contextualizing every event into the overall pastiche of the game world is the most difficult thing to do and, frankly, is something the Guild Wars 2 staff do amazingly well! But they still rely on a counter or a progress bar to define “progress.”
How can you define progression without making it seem pointless and repetitive? It’s tough! A game where you’re meant to play for hundreds of hours can’t practically avoid repetition. So how do you make it less boring?
So how about this? Instead of counting UP, why not count DOWN?
Think about it. What’s more exciting, counting DOWN the seconds to New Years Day or counting UP to 100 push ups? Instead of saying “Kill 10 underwater creatures”, say “3 more underwater creatures left”. The player doesn’t have to worry about if he did X amount of anything. He only has to worry about if he’s on the last one. By doing this simple flip, you place the emphasis on the GOAL, not the amount!
This is a fundamental change in how we look at MMO game progress. Though technically it’s still a counter, people respond to countdowns totally differently. In my opinion, this would alleviate a lot of the tedium associated with completing tasks.
It’s not a complete solution, mind you. The actual solution would be to eliminate counters altogether but that is a much harder proposition. At least with this idea, what you have left to do, not what you’ve done, is placed at the forefront. That’s huge!
Still, the overall goal is context. So long as there’s a purpose to your actions, you won’t mind the doing it, even repeatedly. Does anyone complain about pressing W over and over to go forward? But aything that breaks the illusion must be eliminated or at least hidden away. The trick I’m proposing here is just another way to keep our eyes on the prize and not on the grind. It still won’t fix the exhorbitant amount of time necessary to obtain Ascended gear but that’s another issue…hahahaha!
Whatcha think?
God bless!
I would really like to see how many they actually sell – 3 mill gw2 sold and the retention rate is so so poor and so few playing now.
It would be very interesting to see the stats. There is no way I would ever give Anet another dime of my money and i know there are lots out there like me.
My server is busier now than it was two months after launch. Since you don’t like the game, you see what you want to see.
Saying stuff like this with nothing to back it up is a measure of your dislike for the game more than any objective reality.
They remind me of something else – something naughty – which I rather not say since it might get me banned or infracted.
later. It doesn’t care that I’m there.”
Why [do I think] laurel rewards [are] so lackluster?
Fixed the question you’re really posing.
As for the answer: I don’t know why you think that, I find them just a nice bonus to having fun playing the game, and since it has increased the number of peeps out in open world, they’re awesome.
The day before the patch I was playing on a lowbie warrior in metrica.
A warrior in AC gear came flying into my zone 3-shotting STRUCTURES.
From then on I got, at best, silver in all events until the guy left.
Yes, this was a necessary change.
I’ve heard of a few strange things happening at lower levels that might need a look, but it was definitely necessary.
Of course, Anet could also just give us somewhat challenging, non repetitive, non time consuming dailies.
Whilst I agree with you somewhat – the moment ArenaNet puts something even vaguely challenging in for a daily is when the entire proportion of GW2’s mouth-breathers come on the forums and complain because they can’t do it in the time it takes their moms to come back from the store with cheeto refills.
What you are saying ‘Oh I can do it, when I want to’ is a lie, you can’t, I can’t, no casual player can.
Do you actually have anything to back that up, or are you simply being defeatist and negative for the sake of it?
Here’s how I see it: There are three kinds of players in regards to Legendary progress:
1. The people who got it right. These are people who got their legendaries in the first month, and they obviously did this legitimately without buying anything, because how could you? Recipes were just being discovered! They got these legitimately by playing the game. kitten if I know how they did it, but they managed to do it, so it’s obviously possible.
2. The people who don’t really care (people like me, and many other casual players), who will get it as they get it. Maybe that’ll be years, maybe it’ll be months. We don’t really care. We’re going to play the game, and if we get it, we get it. If not, meh, whatever we’re having fun!
3. Then there’s the jealous ones. The people who are so fed up that other people have Legendaries and they don’t, they’re totally determined to ruin their gaming experience to “grind it out”. They do things like make new characters in WvW just to “easily” get the badges they need, or endlessly run dungeons and do resource node rotations just for the sake of “GOTTA GET MY LEGENDARY GRR RRAAA”.
Except that isn’t the way the game is deisgned to be played, so naturally they’re going to run into stuff like Diminishing Returns and general boredom. They then go on the forums and kitten that the game “is a grind” and “it’s impossible to get a Legendary!” when all of their problems and woes with the game have been self-inflicted. They can’t accept that they clearly are doing something wrong, other people are doing something right, and their destructive determination to cheat the system and kitten out a Legendary as fast as possible isn’t working.
The replies in this very thread are evidence of this.
“I can’t get my Legendary! I FARMED for these stones and I didn’t get enough of them!!!!”
“Getting a Legendary is impossible! My GRIND routine isn’t even close to efficient enough!”
“How are you supposed to GRIND and get as much gold as you need?!?! Inflation! I can’t get thousands of gold!!!!”
Then how about you STOP farming, STOP grinding, DON’T worry about gold, and just play the kitten game for fun. Once again, if you aren’t having fun, simply don’t play the game and go do something else. Wait for new content. Pick up a book. Idgaf, but if you are not having fun, do not play the game.
Simple as that.
Here lies Daeneth.

so when can we make “I want mounts” post a ban-able offense?
Mounts work against the core of the game which are DEs
Changing WP fees works against the core of the game DEs
what are they working on for the next six months to get folks back in the open world? DEs
Stop making posts like this and start making core DE raid group post in the DE forum
Mounts don’t have to conflict with DEs.
Mounts could be restricted to specific mount-related content. Such as, for an obvious example, a racing mini-game type thing! Players could enter (with their mounts) in cultural racing events and work their way up to World Championships. And win, I dunno, stuff. Mount enhancements! Access to more mounts! Ascended mounts! And just because your character is (by way of example) a human doesn’t mean you can’t have a (by way of example) charr-cycle.
I understand your desire here.
But again it would end up being a negitive to the core of the game. We already have too many negitives at this time.
It is great theu are reworking DEs which is what is needed since they are the core element of this game.
Again no mounts ever.

All mounts, should they ever curse us with those, should never exceed running speed and preferably be slower. You want to show off, low and slow baby. No combat or PvE advantages. Just low and slow.
Just want to step in here for a second to comment on a few speculations:
There will be no mounts, no Cantha and no dragons coming with this story arc.
Sorry if that destroyed some dreams.
So… we can rule out Dragons riding in from Cantha on the backs of unicorns then?
Again,
If you want ascended gear with built in infusion, then youre sights are aimed at high fractal levels. So go run fractals. They are making ascended gear, without built in infusions, available via laurels so people are STATTED on equal footing, even if they dont run fractals. The infusion part of ascended gear is specific to fractals ONLY. So if you want ascended with built in infusion, then that tells me you are someone who wants to run fractals because that “upgrade” is specific to fractals.
If you do not run fractals, you do not need ascended with built in infusion.
I see no problem here.
Can people please calm down about this?
you don’t seem to understand the point, this was supposed to allow players to get BIS outside of farming fractals, if it doesn’t have the inherent AR then its not BIS its that simple and creates a sub teir if it cant be upgraded, as you will still have to grind lower level fractals and fight rng to get the stats you want if you want to dip into later fractals for a challenge or because guildies need +1
it does nothing to mend the fracturing of the player base people will still have trouble finding geared players to attempt the dungeon with since there is no AR on the gear, (infusions will help to some extent) youll still only have 50% of the infusion at most as someone who farms fractals, less when higher rarity infusions are released. then you have to grind lower level fractals (if you can find anyone to play them) to get a new set of gear with 100% AR.
I still dont see the problem, but not because I am shortsighted. I just dont see it as a problem.
From your two posts I gather that you, or this hypothetical person, wants to run high end fractals where ascended with built in infusions is almost required. Yet, you dont want to run fractals to get this gear. Gear that…is only BIS for fractals/high end fractals. You do not need +10 AR and some offensive stat for anything but fractals.
So what you’re saying is, you want to be able to purchase already infused ascended gear via a nice, easy, calm, no pressure way via daily and monthlys. You want to be able to sleepwalk through these dailys, which they most likely will be if current dailys and monthlys are any indication, in order to SIDESTEP a fractal grind for infusions that are only relevant to fractals.
I dont see your logic.
All I see is:
I want to be able to get BiS gear without grinding fractals so that I can join high level fractal groups.
I dont want to fractal grind. This means, I dont want to spend 1.5 hr per day to grind out fractals against RNG. This is too hard because fractals CAN be difficult at times, and RNG does suck.
I want to walk through the green fields of Kessex hills, kill some centaurs, and complete the monthly achievement. Then I can get the infused ascended, to go do those high end fractals.
Sounds like you want the easy way out. Not trying to be rude or insulting, but that is pretty much how I see this.
Edit: added— Not to mention, the stats(power, precision, crit, vit, tough,mf) on the laurel-obtained ascended will be the same as the gear you get from inside the dungeon. Again, the only difference is the infused slot, which is only pertinent to the dungeon. Also, they are removing the fractal level barrier. So if you must grind out lower levels, it will be a little easier to find a group.
Whether or not ascended gear is a result of the treadmill-wowmachine that whines on the forums for geared progression, the gear grind has been placed into the game. So, if you or anyone else is upset about needing to grind out fractals for that just-right piece of gear, you can thank those who whined and eventually got their way. And RNG is present in all games, evenWoW. How many times have I seen other items drop from a boss, but not the one I wanted! ugh! LoL.
And I know arenanet said ascended gear has always been planned. Just making a point that the vocal minority/majority that wanted gear progression got their way, and these are now probably the same people whining that its too grindy and too RNG based.

A multi-stage narrative – excellent! I’m looking forward to seeing how ArenaNet unfolds this storyline. The dire situation starting in Wayfarers and Diessa sounds like an ominous start (The first place I’ll be checking to see if that adorable charr cub Anya Fairmind is still safe).
WvW improvements will be much appreciated as well and the new dailies sound intriguing.
And thanks to Colin for posting the clarifications.
As I read it, the Quaggan backpack will be hidden in an RNG box… please tell me it isnt true? Please?
cries
I did not get that impression from reading the summary. If you cannot simply purchase the backpack I’d take cover from the backlash. The only thing scarier than an enraged quaggen is an enraged quaggen fan.
Want to boost morale within GW2? Get Anet to drop DR and you’ll see a huge boost in morale overnight.
On the contrary, the DR is what makes me love this game even more.
I don’t feel like I’m forced to grind for hours to keep up with content.
Player since head start. Playing as much as I can each day, 8h+ like most people I know.
Not a Facebook user.
And yes, WoW probably has more facebook users and it probably still has 6mill+ subs, it has been up in 10mill subs. That doesnt mean GW2 has failed, it just means WoW is still the king of mainstream boredom.
WoW = Pop
GW2 = Heavy Metal
Tyria is an alien world with several sentient and semi-sentient species co-existing, and there is magic. It is just not possible to compare technological development with human history on our own world.
For a start – magic is integral to daily life even in the cultures that prefer not to use too much of it. Magically enhanced materials are used for armor and weapons even in the Charr culture – we know this from crafting. The Charr have magic users in all three legions of the armed forces (you can play all professions as a Charr) and are not above employing magitech weapons technology (the Mortis Verge is supposedly based on Charr technology according to the Durmand Priory).
So while the Asura have the most exuberant and advanced magitech in Tyria, all races can be seen to use magic mixed in with their technology to varying degrees. This is only logical – magic is one of the fundamental natural forces in Tyria, so any engineering and technology would develop to incorporate this to some degree. This completely changes how we would expect technology to develop. For example, many design bottlenecks in our engineering history were due to the lack of of sufficiently strong and light materials, or lack of a suitable energy source. Leonardo da Vinci and chums could probably have built the helicopter he designed if they had the energy source that runs the lathes in Lion’s Arch crafting stations, or the magitech which magically infuses and strengthens cloth in light armor.
My point is that in a world where magic is real, the kind of steampunk creations we see in the game are actually quite appropriate to the lore. Technology would just develop differently and probably more rapidly in some areas due to magically enhanced materials and energy sources.
Whether or not this is to our own personal taste or not is another matter – I love the steampunk stuff myself but respect the OP’s tastes are different.
The Path Least Travelled, Gunnar’s Hold
Hint: it’s not fun, which is why a lot of people don’t care
About it.
Without money you wouldn’t have the people to play with unfortunately.
What happens is you say “Hey this looks pretty cool!” Then after doing it a few times it’s not so cool anymore and you stop bothering. So does everyone else. Repeat for all the things to do and then months later everyone stops bothering. The new people that join the game after you had your fun have less/no people to group with, so they get bored and quit before long too.
So basically, they’re tricking people into playing. Yeah. That’s better.
Do you feel tricked playing MMOs?
That’s the reason I don’t do dungeons unless I want to anymore. I play to have fun, not work.
Message me any time in game.
As someone who almost has all 8 classes at 80 (none which are powercrafted to 80), I can say it’s a great way to learn and enjoy the game. I will share some of my experience and hopefully can help some players out there.
For me, my first 4 characters each covered a region in the game (Ascalon, Shiverpeak, Maguuma, Kryta), and all have done Orr. Spoke to all the named NPC i could find and explored as much of Personal Story as possible. These 4 characters each had different crafting professions so by the 4th character I no longer need to master other crafts unless its for leveling.
The next few you can choose to be efficient about it and here’s what I chose to do:
Play your next characters to 30, as each race’s beginning storyline varies greatly depending on your character creation choices. The path to 30 is also quite fun because of a sense of progression (unlocking utility slots, skills, and eventually elite)
After 30, you are at the midgame, personal story will begin to look familiar because it becomes streamlined, and mid level zones are usually very empty compared to top level zones and beginner level zones, so it’s a lonely road if you choose to level regularly. Thirdly, you don’t have enough trait points to come up with any fun builds so you are just kind of in limbo for awhile when it comes to character progression.
Thats when I start crafting the following 3 crafts: Chef/Artificer/Jeweler. There are guides out there to help u cost efficiently master those 3 crafts in less than an hour, getting you 30 levels. Consider the gold spent here an investment that you will be getting back real soon.
Now you are level 60, what I consider the beginning of endgame, because starting now you will see more rare drops, and guaranteed exotic items from the lvl 60+ maps upon completion. If you want some math, that’s 12 exotics guaranteed from map completion, most of these are over 1 gold each, from my experience the average is more like 2g each due to lucky sigil/runes. These final 20 levels will also gain you a lot of insight on different possible builds so you can decide what final build you want to be.
If you are really against crafting I’d suggest do some dungeons between 30 to 60, but personally I don’t like doing dungeons unless I’m on my level 80 because that way I can get better tiered loot from chests.
I hope this helped.
