Engineer says hi.
Quip? It shoots confetti. Predator? yeah, a sniper rifle on a class who’s rifle is actually a shotgun. FSP? Pretty decent, but not amazing.
On top of that, our class mechanic is kits which completely cover the legendary, making it even more pointless.
It’s one of the game’s best features for me.
To OP:
This down scaling is keeping me happy and fun because i never run into some overpowered player one-shotting the monster around me. And i believe this is one of the most beautiful feature that GW2 offered.

Ahhh yeah. This was all a good read and what have you but in the end, if you’re casual, you’re not really going to care if you have best in slot. You’ll have what is best for you or what looks best. Hell, my wife saw the cat with the hat, whatever it’s called, so now when she does do her dailies (which usually takes 30 minutes at most for us) everything earned is being saved for that kitten cat.
Does she need it? Will it help her stats? No and not at all. But does she WANT it? Oh yes. Just as soon as I saw the Quaggan backpack was coming I knew she’d have it as soon as she logged in and guess what, she does. She loves it. I play every day and got my exotics and karma all very fast but I’ve yet to step into any dungeon. I was in the beta, pre-ordered the collector edition of the game for the neato stuff and still only have 99% world completion. Curse you eternal battlegrounds!
But I doubt I’ll ever have a legendary and I don’t see myself ever finishing my story as the last part, where I am, seems to need a group. Rambling here I guess but so what? My view on all this is very very simple. It’s a game. Play it for fun. If you’re hardcore stats or casual keep it simple and keep it fun. I’ve heard of people spending $100s on gems to turn to gold to help with legendary or whatever. Ok. I love the skins on them too but it’s just not worth the money or time to me. Though I would like one, I don’t play with it as a goal.
People that have the time to play all the time should get their ‘rewards’ for it. People that have less time, well, we’ll get what we get. Seems to me if you only work 1 hour, you shouldn’t expect to get the same perks as someone that works 10 or 15. Like people trying to smash to the next level cap as soon as possible. What’s the rush?
I make time for friends and family and game time and it’s all good and I don’t care who gets what faster in game. It’s fun. When it stops being fun, I’ll just be gone. No quitting post or drama. Just gone. I like the system and wish the monthlies didn’t need dungeons or WvW as they don’t get completed by me because of that, but I don’t care that others do manage it. So long as they had fun.
Does this need a TL,DR? If so… it’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun. Why suffer gear envy if you’re really a casual anyway? People that can put in many many hours will naturally have the “better” stuff. Have fun here or somewhere else and that’s all that matters. Life’s too short.
Uncle salty I hear what you are saying and please correct me if i don’t completely understand.
What you are suggesting is a system that allows people who put in 1/3 of the time to earn the same reward as those who put in 3/3 of time. Or are u sugsting a system where if an achievement takes roughly 2 hours to tackle you allow more than one day to do it. Thus time spent is the same but the time is spread out.
If you are suggesting the later I would not mind seeing a truncated monthly type achievement which we can call a “weekly”. These would be a little more difficult than a daily and provide 1 or 2 laurels.
I have written 3 posts to put here and deleted them all because I know they would have received infactions…so I will put it into 1 sentence.
The majority community here has a knee jerk reaction to anything someone can accomplish by means of skill that they could not otherwise get in a “farming” manner that takes almost no skill and can be completed solely by playing “x” hours.
I say we cannot rule out the common large events, specially in light of a bug being found with the qualifying of loot, which could of been blocking the dropping of Final Rest from its chest. Something along of the lines of “Yes you can have loot, but you do not qualify for anything more than ….”.
Yeah, which is why I decided I’ll search more once the loot bug is fixed. No one knows if it’s interfering with Final Rest or not.
Though honestly, I hope it’s because Final Rest is so rare and not because of a coding error. That’d make us all look silly, wouldn’t it? lol.
Nah not really… I wouldn’t feel silly at all. I don’t need the staff, at all… but I am enjoying the search for it immensely. Even if it turns out that it isn’t available due to a coding error… that doesn’t diminish all the fun I’ve had theory crafting and searching Tyria for hints and clues to its whereabouts. Naturally I would expect them to fix the error…. but….
This is the type of end game that is sustainable… gear treadmills suck, dungeons get old after a few dozen runs… but small things that immerse you into the world never do, because they keep you mentally engaged with the game… rather than being on auto pilot through yet another kitten speed run not talking to other players for a chance at a piece of equipment that will let you run the same content again at a higher level.
Give us more stuff like this… give us MORE ways to interact with Tyria… give us more reasons to pay attention to npcs and other objects… give us more reasons to theory craft, network, and interact with other players….
I think i’m going to mention this in the game bug forum.
That’s a nice little recounting of what happened but you left out a few points:
- Anet acknowledged the possibility of a problem.
- Anet felt the existing thread was insufficient and wanted more data. This doesn’t mean they ignored the thread they closed, more is well… more not the the same stuff they have.
- They created a stickied thread with an Anet post to start it to make it more apparent, official, and hopefully get noticed easier.
- After declaring it an “X-files level conspiracy” they kept working on it. Seriously, think about that for a moment. The problem they found didn’t jump up and slap them in the face after they gave up. No, they kept looking in to the problem.
- Once they found a problem (may or may not be ’the problem) they were big enough people to admit it publicly. Again, think about this. They created another sticky post to say “Hey, we were wrong. There is a problem. Sorry about that.”
Just the fact they made a post to say “We were wrong” is more than you ever get from most companies. Heck it is more than you get from most people.
Sorry but if you’re going to talk about what happened you have to give credit were it’s due and Anet IS due some credit here. Sure they aren’t perfect but the way you tell it it’s like they covered their ears screaming “LALALALALA” until the code jumped out and slapped them forcing them to fix it. Which is obviously impossible and it’s disrespectful to the hard working people at Anet to ignore the time they put in to checking and double checking loot tables and lines of code to hunt down what amounts to a bug.
I saw a pair of Charr working together… One was named Ihavehairballs and the other was Heymetoo.
Yes, blues are vendor trash. But what if champs would drop a yellow every time like some people here seem to want. Think for a moment beyond yourself and think how would that effect the economy.
They cannot make drastic changes like that without messing up the economy. Guaranteed blues also means higher chance of better than blue, and it’s a lot better than getting a porous bone.
In any case, let’s just wait for the patch before bringing in the pitchforks and torches again?
Well, I’m excited about it. Removing everything below blues from Champions is a huge deal. This will increase chances of getting greens, yellows, and oranges by quite a bit – it just takes a very basic understanding of odds.
It is quite frustrating killing a champ and getting a porous bone and with this patch, this shouldn’t happen.
still no reason to kill champs.
I assume you’re one of the people who do not have a basic understanding of odds?
The proof will be in the pudding, somehow I doubt that we will be satisfied.
I feel the truth is some players will simply never be satisfied with GW2 and ANets decisions – at least not vocally.
There’s a mount in the game that any player can climb on top of.
It’s called Mount Maelstrom and it’s a giant volcano in one of the zones near Orr.
The problem is, unlike WOW, you are not directed to do anything in particular. In WOW you are directed to grind dungeons. Maybe more end game direction is in order?
I’d say the opposite. More sandbox features should be put in. Less themepark, more sandbox
His methodology doesn’t prove the loot in the chest changes, but your reply doesn’t prove it doesn’t either.
There’s a simple way to test it. Loot the chest, then kill the boss, and click on the chest again, to see if any items have been added.
I’ve killed Rotbeard about a dozen times (he’s easily soloable) and:
a) If I had looted the chest before killing him, the chest remained empty after killing him, and
b) There was no significant difference in the quality of the loot, regardless of when I opened the chest (before or after killing him)So, while it is of course possible that Arena Net coded this particular chest to behave in a completely illogical way (just as it’s possible that the contents of this chest depend on what dyes players use in their armour or how many consonants are in the character’s name – after all, that can be coded), there is no evidence to support that theory. Ockham’s razor and all that.
Your “simple” test wouldn’t establish anything. Anet can easily set it so the chest can only be opened once per set time period and that the drop table that’s used for determining loot changes depending upon whether or not Rotbeard has been killed in the past x amount of time. From a programming perspective such an act is trivial. Without access to the actual code for the chest the only way to test would be to open the chest enough times to statistically determine the drop table both with and without killing Rotbeard. That would require tens of thousands of data points for both with and without killing the boss.
As I noted before, I highly doubt this is the case, I’m merely saying that you’re wrong in your claims that it’s impossible. Also, if you’re going to try use Occam’s razor, I’d recommend figuring out how it’s spelled first.
Question remains, is the achievement bad because it can be “grinded” or is it bad because it’s something that has no variety and has a huge kitten number which will take a stupid amount of time and resources, ie: a grind if you want to actually get it some time this year?
Neither.
Just because something can be used wrong it doesn’t make it “bad” in itself.
It’s like saying cars are bad because they can be used to kill.
Can’t always blame Anet for player’s exploitive usage of features, because realistically you can’t code everything in a way that it can’t be possibily used wrong.
Most times in life you’re given things you can use wrong or right, it’s up to the person to use things responsibly.
Take some freakin responsibility people, it isn’t really a bad thing to use common sense.

I don’t want a guildhall at all, I want my personal housing. Perhaps somewhat based on the home instances we have already.

Harathi Hinterlands
Before you lies a battered statue of Dwayna. The elements have not been kind to it.
Examine the area.
There are indentations in the ground before the statue. It appears to have been made by people who spent a great deal of time kneeling here.
Kneeling will start an event- has anyone tried other actions at all the other statues in one log in (as needed to complete the books) ALSO the tomb is EMPTY where is Saul D’Alessio??
It may all be in my head, or the RNG is being kind to me lately, but I swear I’ve been getting more loot. From dragon chests and from trash mobs.
Especially salvageable items, which is just in the nick of time with the Feb. monthly.
Population, I don’t know. I see players everywhere. I don’t use a lot of WP because they cost too much so I run to where I need to go and I see them in all zones. But Orr areas. I don’t hang out there much, trying to get the POI’s and vistas with the super fast respanws and mob density is just too frustrating.
More fun to hang out in the middle to low zones.
I think the laurel system is great and would love to see it expanded. I think if they are working on horizontal progression there will be long term stability. If they choose vertical progression, they will get players from other games who will play 15 hours a day for a few months and quit, never to be seen again, while having lost their loyal player base in the process.
And fishing. Seriously. The game will never survive without fishing :p
a tonic to become.. “a guild banner”. Underwhelming.
Yes, because by quoting just that you miss out entirely on the rest of the interview. Way to isolate a statement.
I think it’s amazing. I am going to use one by the fractal entrance in LA and see how many people run by and try to click me.
Dragonbrand
The temptation to sell would indeed be great, but I think if I found it I’d keep it.
It is true, these are MINOR bugs, very minor, very annoying bugs. However, even little details count towards your gaming (bad) experience. When you spent 900 hours over something that just vanishes in thin air(see hundreds of threads about the “science of 1500 rares for a precursor thread with no precursor obtained” out there, whether it lost/bugged/broken because of a bug or RNG, you did spend the time, but it is now time to give up.
I posted this before, but here goes:
I’m not sure what contributes more to my negative experience with Guild Wars 2. The part of community which seems to think I must be wrong in the head to enjoy playing the game, or the ones who tell me more-or-less to my face I shouldn’t be having fun.
I can get past the bugs, I can get past the glitches, because if it really bugs me I can put the game down and walk away for a couple days. Weeks. Months if need be. I’m not paying for it, it’s just like three of the other games I play; I paid a price for the software, and I can either play it or not as I choose.
And, being completely honest, I got bigger things to worry about in my life than anything going on in Guild Wars 2. Anything.
Dueling, more reasons to stand around in big cities instead of out in the world interacting.
Arenas, more reasons to stand around in cities waiting for your match to pop instead of out in the world interacting.
I’m fine with dueling so long as there is an option to refuse or block all dueling requests. The last thing I want is to get hit on by every Tom, Dick, and Harry that’s bored and looking for a fight.
I wonder, we’ve been told that it is an open world event with a large chest, it’s unlikely to be an orr temple, a starter meta event or a dragon due to all of them being farmed like crazy all the time
one thing that people always forget to mention:
What about Arah?
the event to take arah rarely occurs because of it’s insanely farmable nature and the fact that it’s the event to keep a dungeon open, leading to it being failed very rarely.
the thing is, the arah chain ALSO has a large chest, it’s just insanely difficult to ever see it because the chances of failing is so small, we never need to retake arah, leading to the chest being relatively unfarmed
my theory is this:
Final rest drops from the large chest at the end of the opening of Arah, however, as the event rarely happens due to not failing to defend, it leaves it as the only open world boss chest that has not yet been insanely farmed
the problem comes where if this turns out to be true, we need to convince people to not take advantage of 5 mins of ludicrous amounts of risen infinitely respawning, and block off access to arah, so we can farm the chest that may or may not contain a small chance of getting final rest.
the reason it’s rare is that the boss is nigh undefeatable, the boss… is our own greed!
so yeah, any servers volunteer to continually lose arah to farm the opening event chest?
It’s a good game, but the combat in this game is put to shame by the depth available in GW1. I know of all the myriad balancing issues the first game held, but it almost always felt really well balanced in my opinion. I think they really had a chance to do what they did in GW1, but better here by avoiding the pitfall of dual-classing, avoiding only having to work around instanced, lobby-based content, etc. Although i’m enjoying what we do have currently, i’m sad to say that the PvP just falls flat. Team structure just doesn’t seem as integral. The lack of a direct healer role only serves to homogenize most of the class designs, i feel. I just don’t feel the combat in this game. It doesn’t seem as social as an MMO should feel. Combat just doesn’t engage me and i think they could have had made one of the best MMOs to launch in history if they just had more structure to the combat roles. I still feel very strongly that removing the monk class and doing what they did with the class / skill system was a grievous mistake. The whole game just lacks a hook. There are tons of things that GW1 just does way better, including getting players to play together in meaningful ways and not splintering the story to the point of nullification and segregation of appeal.
Sure it was much more fun in Guild Wars 1 to go into random arenas, and know as soon as you saw the other side had a healer and you didn’t that the match was over. That was tons of fun.
Just because you haven’t worked out the syergy, doesn’t mean the synergy for teams isn’t there. I talk to teams that have synergy from time to time, having worked out various strategies. Different doesn’t have to mean worse.
And for all the skills in Guild Wars 1, and there were tons of them, there are four or five PvP builds used for each profession at any given time. As the meta changed the builds changed, but you knew what people were going to use in general.
Guild Wars 1 gave the illusion of depth…which is all well and nice. Guild Wars 2 does a much better job of hiding its depth, which means novices can pick it up much more easily. That doesn’t mean however that the depth isn’t there.
Some people see it, and some people refuse to see it.
So you’re attached to using a couple of weapons and ignore the rest of them on offer? I don’t get it.
I used to use the rifle on my engineer and for a long time it served me well. It was a great weapon to solo with but as I got deeper in the game I realized I wasn’t killing things fast enough with it. You get to Orr, and the game changed. Things were spawning faster than I could kill them. So I swapped to pistol and shield, Completely changed the game for me.
Then I started playing more with some of the kits.
Being attached to one weapon, saying it’s better for support but sucks when I’m alone, tranlates to me to mean it’s a support weapon. Clearly a support weapon isn’t really meant to be used solo. I mean you can, but why would you? So you switch weapons around depending on your situation. It’s part of the game.
I don’t think making every weapon viable in every situation would make this a better game. On the contrary, I think it would make the game worse.
Saw a guy yesterday, Charr Engineer named “An Asuran Mesmer”. lol’d irl
Endgame: You login to play things you enjoy.
Dungeons, fractals, WvW, sPvP, tournaments, dailies, aestethic gear chase, and soon we’ll get Guild Missions.
If you enjoy nothing of GW2 then it’s not the game for you.
I’m not sure what’s going on in people’s heads these days.
If a MMO is not based on a fake unlimited progression then “it has no endgame”.
If a MMO has a fake unlimited progression then “it’s a grindfest”.
You want continuous grind but you don’t want it. Decide yourself.
I say GW2 is perfectly fine with being a game about gaming.
Those who need to be addicted into a circular grind to have fun already have a plethora of games that offer exactly that, I don’t see why we can’t have ONE game that is not like that.
