You can shortbow all day in PvP and WvW.
LB is just a terrible weapon. Combine that with a whole lot of selfish utilities that don’t even help us compete with “top tier” damage in ANY game mode, and it makes teams in all content not want to run rangers.
But yeah, PvP and WvW if you go shortbow and you’re actually playing a sensible build, like, a build that makes sense and isn’t just a hodge podge of random traits and utilities, you’ll be fine.
LB on the other hand has so many skill and design problems that the only reason to ever actually use it is if you like it. That’s a matter of opinion and not efficiency though.
But to clarify what’s wrong with LB:
The worst part is, that’s like, the short list of what’s wrong.
At part of mesmers, they do serious ranged spike damage.
Sunday morning in EOTM: Chased a mesmer who had ~75% HP and wanted to hide from the zergfight they lost, but when he realised he got trapped beside rocks and falling, he turned around and tried to brake out. It was like 12k HP loss in 2 sec for me.
If I weren’t at full health, it would be a one hit kill from range.
I’m lucky he didn’t spawned that GS spinner clone that usually makes ~8k dmg meanwhile I’m dodging it!!12k Hp Loss… And I’m not a glasscannon…
When will we make that dmg with our “Rapid” Fire?
After these moments; Mesmer is the superior ranged DMG.Do they sacrifice anything? Or anyone else?
Even Stealth has no rules apart from braking out of it on will.Speaking specifically for mesmers, they sacrifice virtually all of their condition removal to do those kind of numbers, and really don’t have much to begin with either.
That being said, I’m not disagreeing with you, and if rangers are supposed to be the maximum single target ranged damage relative to mesmers being the runner up competitor, than I sincerely believe ANet has a lot of work to do, and not just on the longbows skillset, but on the fundamental idea that there is a huge efficiency disparity between trying to operate a pet at melee/skirmish range versus 1200/1500 range that needs significant addressing.
Aah the truth. We have all heard that the ranger is a mash together of 2-3 different class concepts ANet had, and this is where is really shows the most. They continually tell us 2 things about rangers.. We should have the best and longest range DPS, and that 30% of our DPS is from the pet. They just don’t seem to realise that these 2 ideas do not work together in any way at the moment. With nearly all pets being melee, and certain all the DPS pets being melee there is just no chance a ranger is going to seriously complete with a mesmer, or heck even a rifle warrior at longrange combat.
Ranger and Mesmer are the 2 classes I play.. And while ranger is still my main and favourite, if I want to go pick people off at range, be it solo, small scale or in zergs, GS mesmer is my choice every day of the week. It has more damage, more survivability and more utility.

Yes I too am tired of seeing 8k-12K spikes at 1200 range from a few pets. They also fire around corners, through any wall or obstruction and continue to damage and lengthy cripple at this range.
Condi removal isn’t a huge sacrifice on a stealth based class. If they can’t land attacks to apply conditions in the first place…yeah.
Mesmer is the real ranged winner in GW2, not ranger.

5000 gold and a few precursors pls
also free ascended pls
maybe throw in 3000 gems too while we’re at it
Your vision is not big enough.
All mats kitten t6 to the max possible (with expanded storage), every skin unlocked to date, enough gems to crash the price down to 10s each.
If you repeat it often enough you can then say the company lied when these things don’t show up.
EDIT: I am going to leave the kitten in the above, it is just so cute.
The difference between a Charr engineer and an Asuran engineer?
When a Charr engi blows something up, he meant to do it.
We need reasonbly priced gems. They’re more than double of what they were a year ago.
You guys now,,, that the half of this “no ranger” “meta” is because of the kitten longbow…?
If the LB could do the same DPS as a GS in MELEE than nobody would say a thing… The most popular ranger hate thread would be about the pets….. Oh this is the problem…
A ranger cannot be a ranged damage dealer ’cos the Ele is better at this.
It cannot be a melee damage dealer ’cos the warrior or the guardian or the ele or the necro or the thief or the engineer is better.
Anyways: I would like a patch note:
“If the elementalist gets hit cannot swap attunement for 30 sec”
“If an engineer gets hit cannot swap kits for 30 sec”
“If a warrior gets hit cannot uses Adrenaline for 30 sec”
“If a thief gets hit in stealth cannot use Steal for 30 sec”
“If a necro gets hit cannot enter Death Shroud for 30 sec”
“If a Guadian gets hit cannot uses the Virtue for 30 sec”
Reasonable (I Know, L2P…)
A loot monkey/skritt.
Double click to deploy for XX minutes.
Loots everything around you, even when defeated.
Retreats into its own little instance afterwards, unless caught again beforehand, making you capture it to retrieve your loot.
Imagine the monkeys/skritt running around at massive WvW captures.
lol
Im sure this has been brought up before, but Ive been pouring through videos and forums trying to come up with a creative build that my ranger can use…which actually incorporates pet abilities into it to some degree.
Ive read repeatedly that PVE bosses of all types are basically the same “dead-pet” syndrome, but for this post Im speaking in terms of WvW.
What Ive found in GW2 concerning pets is that they are actually helpful in world roaming or in PVP to some extent.
Meaning that in those situations, pets are about as helpful as they “should” be in all situations across the game.
Problem is… they just aren’t.
Bigger problem is that when the devs created the ranger prof they nerfed ranger abilities to account for the abilities of the ranger pet.. and that’s exactly how it should have been done so that the ranger class wasn’t OP.
Great. Fine. Wonderful.
However, there seems to have been no accounting for situations (such as WvW) where the ranger pet is subjected to siege, and zerg AOE damage etc… and the ranger pet is F4’d (swapped) every time the swap CD is up.
This results in 2 things, as follows:
Rangers as a prof are literally operating at a disadvantage (whatever % advantage the devs decided that the pet gave the ranger) when their pet is continuously dead.
So if the devs decided that overall a ranger with an active pet had a 7% advantage over other profs… then they logically nerfed ranger by that same 7% in the name of prof balance.
OK.. but there seems to have been little to no accounting for scenarios where pets are continually dead due to their lack of survivability (in WvW and perhaps boss fights).
Thats a pretty big disadvantage for a ranger to operate under.
The 2nd result is that this disadvantage severely limits the builds (types of builds) available to rangers.
Why? …because rangers (in WvW) simply have to consider their pets useless.
Thats right.
When planning the build a ranger has to disregard the pet with the understanding that when the rubber meets the road and you’re taking a defended tower or pushing against an enemy zerg… when the pet is needed most (not so much against a tower lol), that pet will be dead. Thus useless.
Is this true for every single scenario in WvW? No.
5 man roaming is OK. Solo roaming is OK.
So, my suggestion is that the devs simply add some of the benefits available in WvW rank to pets survivability… such as siege bunker. So that (for example) when a pet is running around in a hail of AC fire they aren’t dead before the ranger can pull them out of it. That would be a great start!
So this post is simply about pet survivability when its in conditions that it would not normally encounter in “the world”.
Not getting into more numbers, stats, and math speculation.
We understand that the wheel is round and that it rolls… without the need to explore geometry. :>
Thanks
Kudos to everyone with their positive views on success versus thieves.
However, I feel that we need to be more realistic, because success depends on several factors— none of which are a guaranteed—and even if they were, the Ranger player needs to have a specific build(s) catered to thieves, which render the ranger less effective in many other situations.
The problem, is that the thief is able to achieve effectiveness (against most classes with ease) with a single build, but the Ranger needs a specific build(s) and needs to expend great effort to survive—let alone defeat—a thief. Balance issue!
The Sic ’em skill is a step in the right direction, but four seconds is ridiculous—it needs to be six to eight seconds.

Rapid Fire should have double as many arrows in the same amount of time. Same dmg too, warriors can burst hard with 100b so rapid fire should be ours.
we need dogged march, idk why we don’t have it, of all classes, I think ranger would be better at recovering from things like cripple and chill from dealing with the elements (nature) often
hilt bash needs 650 range.
either remove the kick on gs4, or make it so we have invulnerability frames while channeling it
and lb needs cripple… like on rapid fire or something… half a second to a second of cripple each shot would be great
now, all of this is fantastic but let’s wait 6 months for a new healing skill and our class will be great.
/sarcasm
I’ll keep it short and simple.
Some of the most expensive armour skins on the tp, for example, the monocle or the deathly shoulder skins (ranging from around 100g to nearly 300g), only unlocks that specific weight class. For this type of price it should be ALL WEIGHTS UNLOCKED. Skins like the fused gauntlets unlock all weights so why not these?
A while ago I decided to get the deathly shoulderpads (medium) for my thief since I didn’t see many people running around with them and its nice to look different >_> but recently I’ve been thinking why cant this skin be unlocked for all weights.
Anyway feel free to give you own opinions on this matter, im sure loads of people are in the same bout feeling that they have an expensive skin but can only use for one weight class, Hopefully this might change in the future.
The invincibility build. (WvW)
You’ve all seen them; the Warriors, Guardians and Mesmers that simultaneously take on two or more opponents—and walk away victorious like it was a stroll in the park.
Please post the Ranger version.
>
>
Bonus issue;
Unless you run with the Zerg 100% of the time, what is the point in gearing up with a build that doesn’t grant permanent invincibility?
Looking over the LS season 2 blurb I spotted this “Past episodes will be available for purchase for 200 gems”
Does this mean if we want to reply any LS content we need to pay for it in gems? Is it an unlock a chapter forever fee for every account or is it character bound? If we pay for a chapter can we team with people who haven’t?
Personally, not sure how I feel about this move. To me it seems to step over the ‘morality line’ and move GW2 to a payment model I don’t really like..
Hmm
If you log in during the release window of an episode (e.g. two weeks) you unlock the episode for your account. You can replay it as many times as you want for free. If you miss the release window and you want to play an episode that you didn’t unlock, you can purchase it.
It’s a lot like watching television in that you can watch (and record) an episode for free when it airs. If you miss it, you can buy the episode off iTunes later. Does that make sense?
Will we be able to buy the “DVD” season at a later date? :P
Although the OP’s reasoning is wrong, I think his premise is valid. Some items in the gem store are completely overpriced no matter how you look at it.
The one that comes to mind is the upgrade extractor. You are looking at nearly 2000 gems to extract an entire set for of upgrades. That is $30 just to switch upgrades. I can buy an entire expansion for most MMO’s for that price. Imo they should either drop a 0 off of the price or make it 2000 gems for an unlimited use one.
@jcbroe: Yeah, we derailed a bit, but I think we’re fine now. The red lines have been drawed..
So going through the livestream step by step:
1) Rangers excel at ranged single target damage, on par with the mesmer:
I thought mesmers are the illusionists. So why are they on par with us, the “unparalleled archers”, in terms of long range damage?
Furthermore, eles can deal even more damage at range, and that even as AoE.
2) Sustainability through melee evasion:
Yes rangers have many melee evasions. However the melee part is not what suffers the most.
3) The ability to skirmish:
Longbow says hello.
4) Melee AoE (57:40):
They talk about something related to the GS. I have no clue what they meant with melee AoE.
5) Axe is an AoE hybrid weakness:
Yeah, probably the reason why it’s so bad in PvE.
6) Weakness: no boonrip:
Nothing new.
7) Rangers currently lack of stunbreakers:
I’m curious what they plan to do.
The next thing they say is that as ranger you should evade those stuns instead of breaking them.
That’s flawed since we only excel at melee evasion. So this is a nono with ranged weapons.
7) Rangers are pet reliant:
The greatest reason why the ranger is bad at the moment. They say the pet has utility. Other classes get utility through their mechanic without losing DPS.
They say we have many pet options. Nope, we haven’t. Half of the pets are useless.
8) They look at the usefulness of the pet:
Better do that!
9) The pet does have some issues:
The pet does have some more issues.
10) Weakness: Grouputility:
Spirits still die. Other than that, I can’t complain too much. And Search and Rescue is way to unreliable.
11) Good mobility, not as good as other classes at disengaging:
They clearly speaking about the warrior here.
12) More sustaineble evasion as the thief:
Hmmm, I doubt that but ok.

I will say it once again:
Because BM condibunker works, it doesn’t mean that entire profession does.
My Opinion on the Live stream on Friday :::
LOL…..WHAT?….. Here are all the problems I had with the Stream :::
Finally, I want to say something about a question I asked for the stream. I asked this ::
Is there any relation between a profession’s base health/armor weight and their DPS potential?
They answered yes to the question, and described a few of the professions and how that fits. The problem is that this means that Warriors should have the lowest DPS potential out of any other profession because of their high armor/health. That is not at all true, since Warriors deal quite a bit of damage compared to professions that should obviously deal more damage, such as Rangers.
See? Even I, one of Anet’s Godly Awesome White Knights, can disagree from time to time too!(sarcasm)
(edited by Moderator)
No idea what the devs meant by “Sustained melee AoE”.
We have GS and Sword as melee, neither have an AoE skill that doesn’t rely just on cleave, even our AoE utilities (traps) only hit 3 targets … I’m really confused.
Also … highest ranged DPS? Only against stationary golems, w/o buffs using auto-attack as parameter, right?
I want the NoPet! The NoPet has 100000000000000000000000000000000000 HP, 0 damage and gives an everlasting damage buff to the ranger, which makes up for his initial loss to justify the pets.
Are there any thoughts on how this could be run? After seeing the pvp one… I feel like we should show Anet how one could be handled (ie, we run one ourself). Maybe something combined with gwscr or something?
Looking for ideas and some brainstorming.
DnT invitational info:
Death and Taxes [DnT] is proud to announce The Death and Taxes Invitational, the first competitive PvE tournament. Eight teams of five will compete for the fastest, smoothest dungeon runs in a competitive environment on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at a time convenient for both NA and EU players.
First prize will be 500 Gold to the winning team and additional prize support will be announced moving forward.
The Format
The teams will be paired up before each round for a best of three path contest, and one randomly selected team will have the right to pick which path is run first. Their opponents will pick which path is run second. If a third path is required, Death and Taxes [DnT] will pick a dungeon path. The two teams will begin their dungeon runs simultaneously at an appointed server time, which the runs broadcast live on Twitch.tv. At least one member of each team must be able to live stream the run in order to participate.
The dungeon runs themselves will be regulated and timed according to the http://gwscr.com restricted rule set.
In addition to the Guild Wars Speed Clear Rules, a defeated player may not resurrect at a waypoint, and may not be resurrected by his teammates. Should a player be defeated, the remaining 4 must complete the dungeon. Should the last member of the team be defeated, or point in the dungeon be reached that cannot be completed with the remaining members of a team (i.e. only two members alive for Shaggoth in Arah Path 1 or the Brazier puzzle in Citadel of Flame Path 1) that will be considered a “Wipe.”
As long as the team that is still alive is able to finish the path without wiping, the finishing team will be given the win regardless of time. Should both teams wipe, the game will be considered a draw and will move onto the next path. If both teams wipe in the third path of the match, the team furthest into the dungeon will be considered the winner.
The Teams
Teams will register with 5 members and one optional alternate. The registration will list the account name of each player and the profession that player will be playing. Players must run the same profession they register with throughout the entire course of the tournament. The alternate player can fill in for any player on the team and may play any desired profession.
This will promote a risk reward proposition between an “all around” team composition that can tackle all paths of every dungeon and one designed to sacrifice utility for additional offense. The alternate will allow creative teams to tweak their team compositions to their advantage.
Registration
The tournament will be by invitation only, however we are soliciting for interested guilds or teams. Guilds may fill multiple teams if they have sufficient members. Any interested guilds or teams may register in the registration thread on the Death and Taxes forum. http://dtguilds.com/forum
The 8 invited teams will be announced on June 21, 2014.
Members of Death and Taxes will be excluded from participation in this tournament.
Questions or Help
Should you have any questions regarding any aspect of the tournament, please post them in the official tournament thread on the Death and Taxes forum.
If you would like to donate prize support (gems, gold, precursors, legendaries) please contact me in game, my IGN is ‘Nike’.

I wish wish wish that the Ranger and their pet naturally worked as One. In other words, any AoE boon distribution is distributed by the Ranger and pet. Also, when the pet receives boons it is transferred to the Ranger. That way in dungeons Rangers can stand back and pew pew and everything is as if they were within melee range, sharing and receiving buffs.
Edit: They should change Strider Defense to Strider’s Companionship.

If you actually look into it a bit more the ranger was initially meant to be two separate classes, not this archer you still cling to. The beast master and the warden/ranger were the two different classes that were merged into one last minute, the result is the current ranger. You will find that regardless of the ranger’s description, rangers excel with melee weapons and conditions, compared to long range power.
I would presume that considering the two classes were merged last minute they also needed a description for the class, which was apparently also made last minute. I suppose you could say that we are unparalleled archers simply because we are the only class with access to both bows. However, as stated previously, we excel with melee and conditions more than ranged DPS, so overall the statement that rangers are indeed the best archers in the game is void, because we aren’t, and we don’t need to be.
Now to actually address your other notes. First and foremost, the longbow isn’t low DPS if you trait right, and is only possibly beaten by warrior LB because warrior LB has access to damaging conditions which add to the over all damage. However talking about straight direct damage, ranger longbow wins that one. Shortbow on the other hand isn’t really meant for the big numbers. It’s more of a hybrid weapon, hence the reason it has access to the conditions and offers more utility than the LB.
You can take advantage of the SB’s speed by taking the Sharpened edges trait which gives you a 66% chance to bleed on crit. Even with moderate condition damage using that combined with poison volley and the bleeds built into the AA itself you can do some nice condi damage. I wouldn’t recommend trying to get ultra high numbers with the shortbow though, like I said it’s a hybrid weapon, not only power.
Now for the pets. Pets used to be borderline useless, but they have come a long way with recent patches. Always make sure you are using the right pet for the right job. Don’t try and get a bear to do some super combo and 1 shot your enemies. I wouldn’t suggest taking a cat to try and soak up some damage either. I would also suggest keeping an eye on your pet’s HP bar (it’s there for a reason) because if your pet dies the CD for swapping increases from 25 seconds to a minute. Ranger’s total damage is shared with the pet, so neglecting it to try and do things quicker, will only slow you down and hurt you more. Learn how to use the pet effectively and you can and will blow through things with ease.
If you came to GW2 looking for an archer, you’re out of luck. You CAN play an archer, but most melee builds will outshine you, that’s simply how the game has been designed. For all classes their melee builds can generally out DPS their ranged builds.
That was a nice and informative post! In your honor, I will start calling the Ranger Profession… Miolm for “merged into one last minute”!
Which still has misinformation in it. For example, the Ranger wasn’t merged together from 2 different professions. It was actually 3 different professions (Marksman, Warden, Beastmaster), and apparently other elements of the Ranger were further split into yet more professions originally, and I am going to guess that one of them was a Druid/Nature-y type profession.
So hey, guess what, there is a level of truth surrounding everyone’s problem with the Ranger not bring the best at range. Its just 5 years out of date.
I have no specific love for WvWvW players, but it’s one of the last explorations of the game (after literally doing everything else).
With the recent lamentation in the forums over precursors, why aren’t WvW vendor items included in the mystic forge? A dedicated WvW player is husk of an economic representation of the player base. The spark in a WvWvW’s player’s eyes in receiving a donation of a stack of flame rams……..makes me feel guilty.
These guys are like South Park Kenny poor.
Badge of Honour weapons should not only be salvageable, but forgeable. They should apply to precursor opportunities. This would moderately drop the TP prices that have the PvE crowd QQing over, and provide a much needed validation to PvP player’s bank accounts.
Feed a broke PvPer today!

Combat Mode does much, much more than 1:1 keypress and is allowed to be used.
ArenaNet does not and has not ever reviewed or approved any third-party applications. Combat Mode, as are all other third-party tools, is very much “use at your own risk”.
And to further clarify my reply from earlier, from the Guild Wars 2 Rules of Conduct (emphasis mine):
20. You may not use any third-party program (such as a “bot”) in order to automate gameplay functions, including playing, chatting, interacting, or gathering gold or items within Guild Wars 2. You may not assist, relay, or store gold or items for other players who are using these processes.
Using AutoHotKey to map multiple key functions to a single keypress, regardless of the intended use or outcome, is a violation of the above rule.
That means that users who play the game using the official The SteelSeries Guild Wars 2 Gaming Keyboard violate your own rules.
Or is in game advantage only reserved for players who pay you for the privilige?

The WvW Season 2 has been going on for 2 months, and because you don’t figure out that you have no clue how to do the rewards until a couple days before the end the rest of us get screwed? GG
