Karma Changes: Temporary Rollback

in News and Announcements

Hi everybody,

Today we made adjustments to karma where the amount of karma granted from consumable karma items was increased and karma boosts no longer affected the amount of karma gained from consumable items.

We intended to message this change ahead of time to be fair to everyone, however this did not happen, and we apologize for not giving you advance notice.

The lack of advance warning resulted in some people losing out on karma that they would have otherwise gained by using boosts with the karma they’d saved up.

We will be temporarily rolling back the karma change in a hotfix to allow people the opportunity to turn in their karma with any buffs they intended to use. This temporary rollback will be in effect until the game update on September 3.

  • Please note, while this temporary rollback is in effect: the in-game text for the karma consumables booster found on the Gem Store will incorrectly state that it does not affect karma gained from consumable items.

We will also be reimbursing the people who used their karma during the period when the initial change was in effect with as close to the correct amount of karma as possible.

We’re really sorry about the frustration this caused and we will make every effort in the future to make you aware of changes like this ahead of time.

It’s easy to tell that people haven’t even tried the new content out when they say that “it’s just another zergfest.” If you had tried, you would know the mechanics of the new events are anti-zerg. If you attempt to zerg this event, you WILL fail. Period. Please play through content before posting negative comments about content you have not tried.

This is also important. There’s a time limit and a large number of different events in need of completion. If you ball into one giant zerg, you WILL fail. Multiple bodies across the zone are NEEDED.

I’ve seen an entire server fail a zone because the commanders balled up and failed to spread out. The zerg wasn’t able to cover ground fast enough to succeed, and the entire operation fell apart. This isn’t a zergfest, it requires coordination.

In one event, this game is now ruined for me. I am a PVE player and I love the events and living world (up until now). I have spent an entire day trying out this content and have failed to complete it once due to not being able to get into the event. Due to the fact that I cannot reenter the invasion events if i get disconnected, this content is essentially blocked to me. Game over. Very disappointed. I will watch to see if this gets fixed, but have my doubts since I am but a lonely individual. I am so mad right now.

You’ve spent an entire day trying to play in an update that’s been released 5 hours ago huh? Hrm, okay, seems legit, anyways, it’ll cool down in a few days, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do your things.

I don’t understand why you’d get mad 5 hours in after it’s released when you have 2 weeks to do it.
And even if you don’t get the achievements, the update states invasions will still happen after the update, so.. Yeah.

I just finished my first Scarlet attack on an overflow.

It was epic in every sense.

When the event first started, no one had any idea as to what was going on. Commanders were shouting on the map giving contradictory orders, and we were just all confused, and just tried to do my own thing. I picked a direction, saw the first event, and went along with it. It was me and just one other guard trying to fight off an entire portal’s worth of enemies. We were getting pulverized until the nearby NPCs from the town swarmed out to help us …

Only to be crushed by Scarlet’s minions (normal NPCs against vets and champions… they didn’t have much of a chance). There were so many downed Charr, it was almost cinematic. In hindsight, I don’t think your portals would have spawned so closely to a town, but it definitely added something to the moment to see the NPCs respond in a way I would expect them to do so: defending their “homes” from hostile invaders.

That’s when the story started coming alive. The whole thing felt H.G.Well-esque. There’s something about witnessing these events showing up that made it better. In one instance, the small zerg I had following suddenly had a huge shadow over us. I think half of us stopped to look up – saw the airship – and then literally got parachuted on by what felt like a bajillion Aetherblades. We ambushed NPC bosses, fought from event to event, and all the while, the clock WAS ticking – as we’re reminded by the little thing in the UI. I normally hated timers, but somehow, this one wasn’t that bad.

Close to the end, a particularly nasty spawn with AR and Scarlet minions overlapped with each other (yet another unintended thing?). We had like four minutes left on the timer. The big zerg was coming back, but there were too many for the ~10 of us to handle. Out of nowhere, I saw in /say something along the lines of “Warband, roll out!” and suddenly an entire legion of color-coordinated Charr PLAYERS (I’m guessing an RP warband guild – a lot of their characters had some kind of lock in their name) showed up blasting their way through the mob. At that moment I sort of understood why RPers enjoy RPing – that was probably a big kitten heroes moment – the sort of things that makes stories come alive.

And then as if on cue, the Ascalonian Ghosts in the zone swarmed in, too. It was one thing to see players fight swarm with swarm or adding to the immersion, but to see the ghosts of Ascalon rise up from the ground, “FOR ASCALON”, and start “helping” us – that, was something else.

Three minutes later we got Scarlet. /cheers erupted around the map. And, as suddenly as they had came, the zone was silent again. I haven’t even finished looting before I realized that it was all over. :P

I’ve done most of the “hard content” of the game – AR achievements, high-level fractals, Arah, whatever you might want to consider hard. But I think to date, this is my fondest memory of GW2.

I get that it was sheer coincidence that the event just happened to trigger, and I just happened to have landed in overflow with an RP guild who somehow managed to load in sizable numbers at the same time. I recognize that yes, mechanically, we’re still moving around and killing stuff, but something happened. Something made the story come alive. It wasn’t the writing. It was the game itself.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Anet, is that my sense of wonder have been rekindled by the random way in which your events have interacted. I don’t think I’ve changed much since last August, but I felt like that level 8 mesmer seeing Shadow Behemoth spawn for the first time in Queensdale again, and it’s a good feeling – one that I haven’t felt for quite some time playing any game, period.

Thank you.

What a blast. These are some pretty intense events. We completed the invasion with only 3 minutes to spare on the timer.

You really have to complete events and move, don’t stick around to kill what is left over.

Have your commanders split up the group. You need map wide coverage to get this done, you can’t go around as one big Zerg.

What a crazy ride.

First impressions.

I am amazed by the new monster’s models, really I don’t even want to think how much work you guys had to put in these but the LOD of them is amazing!

So I guess this is the first big livng story patch we have seen. I just got back from the massive event in fireheart rise. We had about 8 commander pins on the map, each with about 30 peopel easily on them. I have a pic of what is undoubtedly 80 people, and it runs so smooth. We acc failed the event. We had 30 secs left on it and 5 percent on the last wave. It was fun though. Thanx Anet this is a hundred times better than last shores. Its seriously impressive in terms of capability. All the different factions, the massive amounts of DE’s. This is exactly what I wanted to see happen with DE’s and the Living Story.

I played two quite unknown MMORPGs for a long time quite intensely: Dekaron for 3 years and Atlantica Online for nearly 4 years. Both are typical Korean ftp games, with the one great exception that Atlantica Online is turn-based. Both games had great concepts but what drove me away was the gear progression (roughly the same OP experienced in WoW) – and the outright rogueish behaviour of the publisher regarding the item mall.

GW2 avoids both pitfalls. Especially the item shop is very decent. They go to every length to prevent pay to win, making best in slot gear easily available in game.

That alone would hold me here. Add to that the beauty of the graphics and the amount of labour ArenaNet invests in new content (even though I don’t like everything about it), and for me the result is a great package of entertainment for my money.

I will stay for a long time if ArenaNet continues to perform like this.

Nooooot really.

I believe you’ll find that Ebonhawk was the last outpost being held against the Char by the Krytans before the dragons awoke. It IS a “Krytan” outpost that happens to reside on Ascalonian soil.

I, for one, am really excited for tomorrow when everything for the past 8 months finally comes to a head. If this pulls through the expectations and the hype, it will show the true strength of the Living World and really shine as something ANet is dedicated to: always pursuing new methods of being awesome. Either way, the Living World has a lot of potential going forward; and for this I say

Great Game, Anet! You’ve put your money behind risks, you’ve had (and will continue to get) your ups and downs, and you’ll pull through with the Living Story soon, if not tomorrow. Call it fanboying, but at least it’s for leading the way into paths previously unexplored and untamed.

Lol fanboys i see. It’s ok once a new game comes out this one is gone. I am sick of getting suspensions for say kittento people who are utterly rude and disrespectful even if they don’t cure. So what i have a mouth, comes from 11yrs in the military. You don’t like it turn on you Fn filter!

My father joined the Air Force at age 18 back when it was the Army Air Corps.

He was a career military officer. One of the most decorated officers in Air Force history.

He served in World War II, The Korean War, Viet Nam (twice) among other activities.

Do NOT use the military as an excuse for swearing. Not in public.

Unless you are saying you were never officer material.

First let me say I am a casual gamer, I play MMOs casually, and for me personally this sort of thing is a big deal since it’s how I give myself a goal in GW2.
Finally, after months of RNG (claim ticket) weapon skins, we have Sovereign Weapon Skins that you can BUY, with stuff RELATED TO THE RELEASE CONTENT
True you can buy the currency on the TP but you still have to spend real money/ put in the time to get the gold to buy the stuff, that’s miles better than wasting time/money on the chance to get them
Thank you ANet, please keep this method of obtaining weapon skins, if you find it unprofitable I suggest posting them on the gem store or making the currency account-bound so ppl can’t buy their way, but plz don’t go back to the RNG claim ticket crap, you’ve proven now that you’re better than that.

Can we stop hating on the dev team?

in WvW

Posted by: Ynot.8397

Ynot.8397

Everyone constantly whines about the dev team. They post things on the forums and all they receive is kittening afterwards. Oh, you are removing the quaggans? Shouldn’t have been pve in the first place. Come on people. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. This is especially true when we don’t even know what they are going to be doing in a bunch of their changes. You can be mad at them not caring about wvw or w/e, but when the devs do talk to us at least try to be courteous. The devs talk in the spvp forums a lot more than over here. Guess how most of the replies to the devs sounds over there, oh yeah, NICE.

So can we stop our collective kittening at least when devs respond? Make your case for them not caring, or kitten about something(maybe have a little less rng in our matchups please?) but for god’s sake be respectful people.

I love seeing the Sky Pirates ships flying over head attacking the balloons. It makes the shy in the open world feel more alive.

Can we have more but rare spontaneous permanent events like this everywhere. Events with hard champions that take place like once a week. That could span an entire zone at times. But don’t put them on a predictable timer (RNG timer).

I particularly love the fact that all of it is centered around a capital city that isn’t LA.

Imo the next one should take place in Hoelbrak or Iron Citadel, given the Braham/Rox connection, or perhaps the Grove (perhaps the Pale Tree has foreseen new events that may unfold?).

Can I be blunt on this forum? Both genders can be cynically boiled down to two equally insulting gender roles. Men are inherently disposable drones used for anything that involves dying, especially while they’re young. Women are inherently precious drones used for making babies, especially while they’re young.

It’s true that gender stereotypes and bias go both ways. People of either gender benefit from some and are put at disadvantages by others. Logically, in a species with (for the most part) binary gender, inequality affects everybody.

But that doesn’t mean that we should stop talking about gender issues or stop trying to work towards equality. On the contrary. I have heard one time too many that “it happens to men, too, so shut up”. Gender bias and inequality harm everybody.

As such, this discussion is a good one. Many good and valid points were raised, on both “sides”.
And many other people are not firmly taking sides, and don’t have to, and yet contribute valuable thoughts to this.

Please keep the discussion going, and keep open minds. I dream of one day living in a society where people don’t give a skritt about gender roles at all anymore, and no one will be pre-judged; if we continue to talk about this in a mature way, one day I might.
