There aren’t enough risk/reward mechanics in the mode. The base rewards for capping paper’d stuff should be gutted, and rewards should be doled out as a structure upgrades, with a required buy-in (say you put in 10g on a tower when it’s paper, when it upgrades to t3 you get your 10g back plus 20% for example, and a continuing reward of karma and various stuff mailed to you while the keep is owned). Enemies taking upgrading structures could plunder a portion of that investment. There could be a similar claiming mechanic for guards/camps/doylaks for solo/small group players.

Whether you agree with the idea or like/not like the examples my main point is that a lot of cool stuff could be toyed with this game mode, but according to Anet they probably look at metrics with a simple equation/mindset – Zerging/Zergers = ROI (pushing up the left pushes up the right). Anything that doesn’t fit that simple mindset and whatever design docs they have to follow just isn’t considered.

I know this might not be the best moment for this post with all the negativity around (let’s be honest, this subforum has been like that for a long time). kitten it, I’ll post it anyway.

So much potential… just left behind. It could easily have been the greatest RvR experience for years to come, with a little love and commitment. I am aware that resources are limited, but seeing what other game developers can pull off with a limited budget (both Indie and AAA) makes me wonder how disorganized ArenaNet really is.

DaoC, while outdated, just trumps WvW in so many ways, despite its terrible graphics. It was fun, incredibly rewarding and encouraged strategic play. WvW still has so much room for improvement.

I really don’t know if I should laugh or cry at this point. 2 and a half years without real communication and interaction between the devs and the wvw player base. It really feels like a hefty smack in the face.

I don’t want to play the doomsayer or anything but if WvW doesn’t get any meaningful updates this year then I don’t see a future for this game mode. Of course, it will always be filled with PVE players looking for karma but the players that love mass scale pvp will leave sooner or later.

A new map is nice and all, but we need fundamental changes like factions or alliances, immersion, real consequences, strategic play and most importantly smart avenues of communication between devs and player base.

Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. Thanks for reading.

Who plays WvW only?

I play in WvW the most, ever have since eight months into the game I finally FOUND it.

Until then I was literally and exclusively in PvP – I didn’t even understand the game had a PvE mode.

It’s Anet’s problem that they are ignoring the best of all modes in the game – they really are doing a lot of harm to individual players, tens of thousands who play in WvW and spend a LOT of gold to do so.

WvW could be the most magical part of GW2, but Anet has deemed it to be less so with the advent of dumb things like Golem wars that aren’t doing a thing to help the real and abiding issues and skills that don’t work in WvW but do work in most other modes (exceptions are noted).

WvW is team – even with the incumbent problems, WvW is a strategic starting point where anyone with imagination and determination can do wonders even with a small group and do even more amazing things with a larger group.

I like golems for the simple fact that when youre on an under populated servers you dont have enough people to actually build anything without multiple supply runs. that being said there should definitely be a cap of 2 to 3 golems per map period. 10 alphas can be through a gate on an upgraded keep before the swords even show. with a little balance they can still be impactfull and cool without being over powered. definitely not a fan of this golem event though. aside from that I agree with everything else in your posting.

Golems can be bought with badges, that are gotten from .. flipping towers/killing players.

It won’t deplete the supply.

It may get rid of long-existing dupes tho from previous patch bugs.

I’ve wanted to force off the huge names myself, to actually enable REAL STEALTH in the game, and not just this fancy "vanish magic" we currently got.

This would also get me so paranoid, I’d kitten my pants when a Yak walked up behind me.

I would start out by hooking up with the main pub squad for awhile and hang out in your servers voice comms even if you’re just following the crowd for awhile or at least read chat often enough, you’ll soak up most of the terminology and you’ll catch what commanders are asking for from different classes or different encounters. Inch by inch you’ll push your old limit a bit more and you’ll get a better idea of the stats you’ll need and what you can pull off in a fight.

I started with a ton of PVT gear for survivability and replaced at various points with knight / Valk / zerk as I got used to it. It really isn’t that expensive. Just avoid the wvw gear if you ever want the runes / sigils back.

Doesn’t hurt to use meta battle to start and tweak to your play style……

Haha, if you do that you may create bad first impressions amongst your teammates with your rallybotting. Always best to ask those around you for some help, like you’ve done here.

What I was trying to get across is that you shouldn’t be deterred by not having a “WvW set” of gear. No one likes a rallybot, but personally I’d rather have a player show up in their PvEs than not show up at all.

Just get in and start playing with your PvE gear. Repairs are free. Tweak your builds for WvW, and if it’s something you want to pursue get your self a set of WvW gear.

Decrease base healing, and increase scaling.

Why?
Because as supplementary healing mechanic it should be less useful by all these zerkers who didn’t invest single point into healing power.
It would increase viability of more healing power focused bulids. Currently healing power scales terribly with this finisher (0.2 -> worse than water blast elementalist AA), while having quite high base healing values.

“But this is nerfing healing I supposed to heal myself”
Yes. That why every class have their own healing skill, but as I stated it is supplementary mechanic, additional to core healing mechanic, so it shouldn’t be as effective for those who not sacrifice a bit for it to be powerful.

“How?
Lets say we begin with 700 healing done for 0 healing power. Lets say exotic primary healing stat set would provide this same healing as it is now (around 1250 HPow if i looked correctly, 1570 Healing)
With this we have enough data to equate scaling parameter, that would be 0.7.
Now ascended, runes, and other stuff would be “scaling benefit” for people who invested more.

For clear info it is 700 base and 0.7 healing power scaling, and it would require 886 Healing Power to produce previous effect.

No, your at a disadvantage as it is defending so making it even harder to defend is the wrong way to go.

Instead make a secret entrence so defenders can get in defend a building.

It has been a while now and let’s look at what happened after the change.

The death of WvW tank trains is the main thing I’d like to point out. Before the change, boon stripping was effective and trains had counters. Ranged and melee IMO had a balance. Tanks leap in for the tank bomb. Range use positioning and boon strips to deal with it.

Now in WvW, unless there is a very organized group with at least 2 coordinated guardians per party, tank trains are a thing of the past. Groups push and pull with a death zone between like two pirate ships circling and firing away. Often times, even an organized tank train has no chance to make it through the range-chase.

Fights more often than not end in one side simply disengaging.

Is this the kind of WvW we want?

I play ranged, I play melee. These fights are very lack luster if you’re not playing your scumbag ranger alt.

Why not a WvW Tournament?

Last year during the Living story breaks we had two WvW tournaments.
This year the LS (and the game in general) are in pretty much a stasis since HoT was announced, and yet nothing on the form of WvW tournaments, if we disregard the huge changes with LA and Specializations, which came out last week, we’ve had just about nothing added to the game in form of “living content” or otherwise.
Sure it might be me acting like a spoiled child, but then again a kitten WvW tournament wouldn’t be hard to do. Just activate the fall tournament’s code, and done.
Sure if people really hate WvW or pvp in general it will be business as usual, but for those, like me, that enjoy the occasional WvW, this could add some spice to what has been a stale game for a long time.

Why i bring this up now? Because of the golem thing. Why, instead of a silly gimmicky thing, didn’t you add a tournament?

Alright so I’m gonna give my two cents on ideas for the skills (which very clearly need a rework)
As someone pointed out, guardians are front liners, they shouldn’t be on the back protecting allies in front of them, also, guardians do not need any more protection, we already got plenty of that.
I feel like shield needs something unique to guardian, it should be our poster weapon after all. So my proposal is:

(4) Shield of Judgement: Send out a cone that summons a Fragment of Faith per foe struck.
This creates a situation where, the bigger the difference in numbers is, this skill turns more favorable to the guardian. Assuming a 1v5, it would give that same guardian 5, non overwriting blocks, giving him a better fighting chance. On the contary if only 1 target is struck, the guardian wouldn’t be able to faceroll said target since it would only gain 1 block. Or if 5 enemies are struck but you have 5 plus allies, it only gives 1 block each roughly. (This will also be affected by the trait I’ll be describing later on)

I know the fragments of faith are supposed to be a Dragonhunter trap mechanic, but I think it would really give the guardian some flavor with a unique mechanic.

(5) Shield of Absorption: Create a dome around you, absorbing projectiles and taunting foes caugh inside. Duration of 4 seconds, pulsing 1 second of taunt per second. (Still roots you)

This sinergizes with the 4 skill, as all enemies around you will be busy running towards you, giving your allies a window to run around and gather those fragments of faith. It also renders any ranged attacker useless as they’ll be wasting time attacking you with projectiles, but at the same time it has the counter of melee attackers still being able to hit you so you’re not completely invulnerable. The pulsing taunt ensures that a single stack of stab doesn’t make this skill useless, but at the same time it gives those with 3 stacks of stab (the most common application) time to move out of the bubble.

While I know many use this skill for the knockback only, knockbacks are usually frowned upon in PvE so I felt like this was a better compromise between CC and “stacking meta”.

For the trait:
Shield skills grant resistance to allies affected. Shield skill cooldowns are reduced by x% per enemy struck.
I think an “cooldown reduction per enemy struck” trype works better for this setup, as it would give the guardian a better fighting chance as I described earlier. About the resistance: it’s mostly to keep a bit of the backline spirit it originally had, allowing your allies to charge into battle even if they’re crippled or chilled, or just give them better movement speed to catch those fragments.

Cooldowns should probably be adjusted accordingly. As mentioned in many livestreams, that’s the base functionality, the numbers are just a matter of testing.

Pushing people over cliffs also is entertaining, but it is a short lived reward sacrificed for other better mechanics.

Omegas need rebalancing, but on the evidence I’ve seen since launch, the development leadership are interested in implementing new things but not fixing broken stuff.

Well, the problem, as I see it, is when you do as you are here, and confuse your subjective opinion, with that of objective fact.

Simply because you, personally think something is broken, doesn’t make it true. Simply because they do not change the game around your personal judgments, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t implement new ideas.

And yet he playes way more wvw than any dev, so I value his opinion quite a bit.

The only thing golems are useful is to help blobby servers steamrolling structures and make a perma karma train. Making the diferences between servers with diferent population even bigger and making any defence tactics useless because all the siege you have in the keep becomes useless. Only middle stairs arrocarts and inner trebs to drain the gates remain useful until they breach the gate.

Sieging structures with money, absolutely killing the smaller servers during difficult matchups because nobody is able to hold anything if a permablob of 50 players and 5 omega golems are just running in circles.

Blobbadons is just disgusting.

Since the game seems to be on its way out…and the bottom 2 or 3 servers can barely field 20 players for all of wvw…..

Can we get free transfers from these dead servers?

Oh and your game is really terrific…don’t want to be banned again…
