The flaw of Ascended Weapon Boxes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Honestly, I prefer the set stat boxes. At least then you can use the weapon. The ~5% (or whatever it is) damage increase is still noticeable even if you don’t get a weapon you want.

I got a cleric weapon the other day. Do I need those stats, not particularity, but I’d rather be able to use a weapon now, and have one less weapon to craft immediately.

You say you want a random weapon with pickable stats. I’d argue that it is worse. If I get a trident, I don’t care what the stats are, that weapon will be useless to me. If I get a warhorn/great sword/axe/hammer/mace/staff/scepter/focus those weapons will be useless to me (and most of them also useless to the alts I hardly play).

This is their token-like system. And I’d say it’s a great improvement from just a random drop. It’s the same thing as gearing your first character in exotics. If you didn’t have enough money/karma/mats to buy/craft it you got by on random drops until you could, how is this any different (other than the crafting process being much more expensive and time consuming :/ ).

I have a cleric longbow now, that just means that if I manage to not get another drop for 1+ month, but am able to keep up with the mats/can spend all the gold/ectos to get myself to 500 crafting I can craft my other weapon set with stats that I want. If ascended armor comes out by then, I can still choose to go for a weapon with better stats or I can focus on the armor instead.

To you Cleric’s might be useful, but to me, I’d still rather take a rare or an exotic Berserker weapon over any of the other stats, meaning that to me, anything but a Berserker box is quite literally useless.

And I’m not the only person that has the same problem.

I’d say that’s one of the things anet did right from the start.

If the champions and other mobs that spawn by the truck load had good drops with recent trends Claw of Jormag would never finish.

It’s been that way for as long as I can remember and that’s how it should be. Reward completion not failure.

These are all great ideas! They are very much inline with our direction for the game. The one thing I have to disagree with as-stated is #1: “Remove hot join.” Removing hot join means removing all custom arenas, which we will not do as they have many benefits. I understand why the community wants this; to have the majority of the player base shift to a more structured format like an unrated solo arena. The best middle ground I can see is removing all ArenaNet custom arenas.

If what I’m reading is that the only hot-joinable arenas left would be player controlled custom arenas, and players unable to enter those would be filtered into a structured solo/team, then that’s awesome. Not only would it help to unite the player base a little, but it would give owning a custom arena a much higher level of importance.

It’s a long term goal. It’s not like people ran around with 300% magic find normally anyway. 100 isn’t that bad…and it’s account wide. It’s great for people like me, with tons of alts.

"Error" when selling too many items?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Vick.6805

Vick.6805

As to why it’s there, IIRC, a dev posted a while back saying that it is to prevent TP bots from spamming sales, so if you make ~10 sales in less than a minute, it gives your account a cooldown on making further sales. It can be annoying, but at least the cooldown is only about 30 seconds. Honestly, I don’t mind the limitation if it somehow prevents gold sellers from abusing the TP.

It’d be nice if the error message was clearer and actually told you that you had exceeded the 10 sale/minute limit, or if the sell button just had a cooldown timer on it.

So......where's the grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vayne.8563

So ever since Ascended stuff came out everyone’s been screaming that the game turned into a huge grind. So…… where is that grind?

On paper, Ascended stuff looks like a hugeass list of mats to put on your to-grind list but if you just look at what it actually is, it’s basically stuff you get from playing any of the major contents of the game. Comparing it to a grind is like saying every Zelda game is a grind for pieces of the Triforce/whatever else is in its place.

There is a very subtle difference between a grind and not giving it to you on a silver platter.

You have to look at the bigger picture .. not only ONE Weapon, but maybe 3 weapons and 6 pieces of armor in the next future. Oh and don’t forget people who have a lot alts and/or use more weapons and armorsets with different stats.

I am looking at the big picture. You don’t play an MMO for 2 weeks. You play it for months, maybe years. The whole idea is to give people stuff to do. You may not personally need that but a whole lot of people seem to.

So......where's the grind?

But people want to play the way they want…meaning doing the absolutely minimum they can to get the absolute best pay off. What’s the point of even playing at all.

There is definitely an element of grind in the new weapons, OP, but like everything else in this game, just by playing you’ll eventually get it.

The grind is only a grind people people want stuff now.

You get all you need by playing the game, not sure how that’s a grind. 500 Dragonite ore? that’s 25 Meta events, or 5 days MAX. There are cheap ways to get to 450 crafting AND you can sell the items made at that level.

I’m doing things I’ve never done before to get my Asc weapons, having a blast and have not seen this “grind” you speak of.

Not to mention, you don’t need to have these weapons. It’s a personal choice to go for them, just like Legendaries.

Plans in the future to "earn" ascended gear?

I am going to take a stab in the dark and say probably not any time soon, based on this:
http://youtu.be/Jy7CcwnfUdU?t=1m40s
Seems to me they were not happy with how “easy” exotics were to get. Doesn’t bode well for adding multiple avenues for getting these new ascended items, or if they do I am sure they will still be time gated in some way because he pretty clearly states he likes the time frames they are now using. Makes sense given what he said that they nerfed karma gain across the board back to slightly better than it was before they added karma from dailies. So I think they are still just basically trying to poke around and see the format they want to use, and it’s probably not static and will most likely change in response to player fluctuation numbers.

Welcome to FLASHBACK 2012.

This is what happens to the peeps who say “LOL you noob if you think GW2 is a grind you don’t know what a grind is”. Yeah, all that “We don’t make grindy games”, ‘we don’t have a gear treadmill’, etc. All the peeps that harped on those of us who complained when the first implementations of all this began to surface. Yeah…

To all those peeps who said it wasn’t a grindy game…LOL.

People on GW2 STILL don’t know a real grind. They’re just pampered and need some perspective.

You Pro dude! LOL, getting a Legendary weapon for most people will take about 6 months. I have played many MMO’s and I have never encounter an item that took that long to get.

One highly cosmetic item… completely unimportant to stats or game play.

That wasn’t my point was it?

Oh i’m not even paying attention to who I replied to here.

So SOAC gaming threads – which are just links to the twitch streams – should be moved out of the class subforums and into links vile? That’s just one example – the rule is too vague, and is not enforced consistently enough to justify moving helseths thread for that reason alone.

preach it brah.

Nerds will be nerds. There’s a simple-minded perception amongst all online gamers that game devs are the boogy-men silently plotting to ruin the game. They are the scape-goats, never the heroes.

I know A-net isn’t perfect. No game is perfect and so no game developer will be perfect. But this game has become better and I have full faith it’ll be even better over time. Every recent patch outside the dhuumfire patch has moved in the right direction.

And about that meta… People begged for viable builds for necros and warriors. Spirit rangers had a couple of traits amalgamated with like two buffs and suddenly they’re the most broken thing to ever exist. This kitten happens. No one knew that when you mix together two traits and increase the active radius on spirits they’d be broke as kitten. It’ll get fixed.

Everyone! why so much hate lol? I do not own a legendary, think about that. I’ve been playing since head start.

It’s like 1 year of accumulated wealth, and a lot of smart investing. I am 100% sure there are at least 1000 individuals who has more wealth than me (didn’t even show my lodestones and mini collections yet XD).

Precursors flipper, karma to gold flippers, other exploiters that didn’t get caught.

You need a job.

Have two jobs, that is why I missed all the major exploits, a blessing in disguise.

Conclusion: Circulate your money. Ex. When ectos dropped to all time low, who brought them? If you didn’t, why NOT? It is the best example to demonstrate how to get rich fast. If you invested in them, you would nearly end up with double the amount you starts with.

Simply put, you’re wrong. There are 8 dungeons in this game and every one of them can be done in rares…including every explorable path. Every boss in the open world can be done in rares. SPvP has nothing to do with your gear so that can be done. And even WvW, many people run around in rares.

And then we have the fractals. And yes, you can do the fractals up to level 20 with no agony resistance whatsoever. So if you want to see what the fractals are like you can play them. You can play them over and over again at lower levels. It’s only an issue if you want to do higher levels, but get this. The stuff you need to do level 20 fractals you can get from the fractals. It’s absolutely self-contained and doesn’t affect any other dungeon.

Now what MMRPG can you tell me is like that. Name one.

You see, your lack of experience shows. Every MMO released in last 5 years had dungeons (even raids) playable in “greens”.

Please, refrain from posting just for the sake of posting.

Slow down, cowboy. Way to miss a point.

I didn’t say that other games didn’t have dungeons you could or couldn’t do in greens. In your desire to discredit but, you didn’t understand what I said.

Try again. Other games have dungeons you can’t do without having the required gear. That’s the point. Let me give you a crystal clear example.

In Rift, in order to queue for a specific dungeon, I had to have the requisite stats. In order to get those stats I had to do OTHER DUNGEONS. And in order to raid I had to do specific dungeons to get the gear for those raids. And you couldn’t skip a raid and do the next raid.

Now I have a friend on these very forums who played Rift since launch and then had to work a lot. He couldn’t raid with his buddies. Storm Legion came out and he couldn’t be there. His guild moved on. Leveled up. Geared up. They were raiding. He comes back to the game a couple of month later and he can’t get 20 people he needs to do the old raid from his own guild. He was leveling up by himself. He couldn’t do the new content because he didn’t have the gear.

Contrast to this guy in my guild who came back after a four month break and ran Arah with us.

There aren’t many games you can do that. Sure you can sit and do old content with lower level gear, but you need to gear up to do newer content and that’s the difference.

If you can’t see this, that’s okay. I’m sure most other people have already understood what I’ve been saying.

But a treadmill, by definition, never ends. So if legendary is the final tier, then it can’t be a treadmill, because it’s final. That’s a definition.

You can call a bird a stone, but a bird isn’t a stone.

Legendary is not a gear tier. Legendary is a prestige skin. Legendary stats are not different than the stats of whatever the highest tier is. Thus, it cannot be thought of as a final tier. If ANet never adds another tier beyond Ascended, then Ascended would be the highest tier. We don’t yet know if that will or won’t be the case.

No definition of treadmill that I can find includes “never ends” as part of it. A treadmill does include an endless belt as one of its components. The belt is important to the treadmill’s function, but it is not the purpose of the treadmill.

That said, the function of a treadmill is to allow or cause the user to walk in place. However, the purpose of a treadmill is not to be “always on.” It is to power something or get health results. The purpose of a gear treadmill in an MMO is to promote the game’s longevity in the face of players who desire to play the game a lot. That is the purpose of Ascended.

Sometimes, people argue about the meaning of words to sidetrack from the real issues being discussed. I prefer to talk about purpose and intent rather than about whether a word that has been altered to fit a particular context is being used “properly” or not. The rapid evolution of words in popular culture means that their meaning cannot be set in stone. Thus, discussing the meanings of words is important in discourse so we know what each other is talking about. However, that discussion should be tangential to the real issues, rather than being used as a means to win an argument.

Legendary is a final tier, because Anet has said if you get a legendary it will be equal to the final tier of gear. I have a legendary trident on my necro and a legendary rifle on my engineer.

That means the day this new tier goes life, I have top tier gear without grinding or farming. You can say it’s not a tier all you want…but it works as a tier. And therefore, it’s not a treadmill, or wouldn’t be if ascended armor works the same way.

I see you ignored the rest of my post. Nice dodge of the real issues in favor of more arguments about semantics.

Okay I didn’t think I’d have to respond to the rest of it, because it makes no sense.

What is a treadmill? It’s something you walk on and you get nowhere. Why do you get nowhere…because it’s just the illusion of progression. This is why it’s called a treadmill. By definition it has no end, because companies keep coming out with gear. I’m pretty sure that most people understand that.

A treadmill isn’t doing something until you get to the end, because if you can get to the end, it’s not a treadmill.

I didn’t have a lot of time when I responded to the first part of your post, and I have more time now…so explain to me.

How is a treadmill something the stops. Because saying the definition doesn’t include endless blows my mind completely. That’s the whole point of using a treadmill as an analogy. If they wanted an end they’d have used an escalator.

Treadmill is used because it perfectly fits in WoW and its clones and in GW2 now.

You get a lot of crap thrown at you and you go nowhere just walking in place. But if you stop walking you fall off.

You should get a bit more experience in MMOs before trying to discuss.

But then ignorance is bliss for you.

More insults from a guy who doesn’t have a valid point to make.

I have people in my guild who aren’t on the gear treadmill. They’re not on the achievement point treadmill. They log in, they do a few things, they log out. Easy right.

Some of those people have run the occasional dungeon with me, including Arah.

I’d love to see this in other games. Someone that doesn’t log in, doesn’t gear up, and tries to run the current raid or even the current dungeon. It’s not possible in most games…it is possible here.

With the exception of high level fractals, which were designed for grinders specifically, can you explain to me what content is denied people wearing rares. I’d really like to know.

The minute I hit level 80, I instantly bought full exotics and was completely geared.

Literally, within 10 minutes…

Luckily for me, I’m an adult and can set goals for myself, so I still had plenty of things I wanted to accomplish. None of them centered around bettering my character, they were things I simply did for fun.

I’m looking forward to some new goals being introduced that are based around bettering my character, even if slightly.

It’s funny, though… people complain about a lack of progression, a lack of things to do at 80, etc… then they introduce a new tier of item and everyone complains about that.

You can’t make everyone happy, and this seems especially true in Guild Wars 2.

Except for me. I’m happy.
