WvW needs defence improvements

TLDR: WvW needs significant improvements to castle/tower defence to make it interesting again (suggestions at end).

Heroic castle battles used to involve small numbers of beleaguered defenders holding their castles against overwhelming numbers. That’s what those huge battlements were for. To take a castle, an attacking army had to go into the field, exposing themselves to counter attacks by the defending garrison and relieving armies. Meanwhile, a much smaller number of defenders could hold the much larger force at bay until overwhelmed, relief arrived or the attackers gave up. The result was a rich combination of siege and open field warfare.

But design problems and recent changes have dismantled what little of this there remains in WvW, and in doing so have made WvW even more of a mindless zerg v zerg environment.

Specific problems:

  • Rewards for defending are so low that it’s far more lucrative to be outside attacking than inside defending.
  • Castles/towers that previously could only be attacked from the field can now be attacked from the safety of other castles/towers.
    (In history, castles/towers that became vulnerable to this sort of attack were scrapped and rebuilt in locations without this fundamental weakness.)
  • Castles walls do not give an effective combat advantage to defenders (killing a single target on the ground from a castle wall currently requires multiple coordinated defenders).
  • GW2 combat mechanics mean that Zergs can be effectively immune to damage directed at them from castles/towers.
  • Defenders have only two effective tactics: counter zerging and arrow-carting choke points (all except the front of gates which often can’t be reached – another fundamental design flaw).
  • Running through enemies and dodging over wards means attacking forces must zerg to have any hope of blockading the gate when besieging a tower.
  • Being able to WP in to defend a besieged castle removes the value of divide attacking forces to cover multiple gates and concentrates attackers back into a single zerg.

And now it looks like trebuchets may also drain supply in attacked towers/castles, trivialising defence even further.

Instead of driving rich combinations of field and siege warfare, WvW’s towers and castles now act merely as pause and choke points for zergs. The result is that WvW has deteriorated to . There’s negligible incentive for intelligent battles in the field and little to no opportunity or value in intelligent siege or defence (except perhaps for SMC).

If we want WvW to be more than zerg v zerg with objective flipping then we need to recreate the value of tower and castle defence. In particular:

  1. Provide meaningful rewards to players who defend a tower/castle against attack (the defend event you get if someone smacks the gate as they run past doesn’t cut it).
  2. Fix trebuchet range so that towers/castles can be attacked only from the field.
  3. Give defenders on a wall bonuses when attacking enemies on the ground.
  4. Redesign gate entrances so that defenders can cover them effectively from relative safety.
  5. Upgrade corner towers to better cover of walls and better protect defenders/siege in those towers. (For balance, upgraded towers could be beaten down again by siege.)
  6. Implement double gates where those are part of the design (e.g. Bay north gate) and make double gates an upgrade option.
  7. Remove castle WPs or block them properly so that defenders cannot WP in to a castle under attack.
  8. Provide traps that make gates unusable for a fixed period.
  9. Provide unblockable knockback attacks on defensive siege to break up attacking zergs.

Wauw, even after giving an honest and mature explanation and announcing to stop, you guys start to flame me? tbh the difference in mature attitude between ÄÄ and u guys is relatively big. We started quite unmature but soon adapted because we care about respect from other guilds. Sadly you guys showed yourself this way w/o shame and I really do not hope you are proud of that.

ÄÄ being nothing? Well as a proud guildy+commander of ÄÄ, I can not let this insult be unanswered. ÄÄ can fight on its own and I think all guilds except yours can vouch for that. Ask TEO, WBC, RAGE, HT, CHvc, these guilds all fought ÄÄ when we were with guild group. Try to think why we did faced those guilds who are in theory better then you are but that we did not faced you..? Be aware of what your saying to that because u might insult any of those guilds.

ÄÄ is a WvW focussed guild that focussus on the purpose of the game in perticular. We are focussing on taking/defending stuff and if that includes killing zergs then thats the case. We also use whatever we have to assure we are winnig. If there arent many options left, then we will fight outnumbered and try to make best possible. ÄÄ tags up aswell because we want the pugs to experience WvW like we do. Stimulate TS usage and learn them new stuff.

IF ANY1 OF GH CAN VOUCH FOR LION DOING ALL THESE THINGS ASWELL, MAIL ME!

(think again before you call ÄÄ not a WvW guild because we mean more to UW then u will do for GH, this is my last post for now untill you guys flame ÄÄ again on a unacceptable way)

there is a problem that every weapon set has and it is called “downed state”
i can down someone in a 1 v 5 fight, without a d/p build but i won’t perform the stomp.

And yeah, I find D/D as a broken weaponset as well it’s limited to #1 #2 and #5 and 4 way too situational. It requires a bit more skill than D/P but at the same time there are situations where D/D perform better than D/P.

I think it’s not amusing. It’s just sad that people nowadays can’t think with their heads.

But yes, unfortunatelly I’ve been called names and whatnot, just because people are too danm dumb to step out of black powder OR knock me out of shadow refuge OR immobilize me OR dodge my heart seeker OR dodge unload OR spread if I’m using short bow OR …

People need to either create more alts and try classes out more or go to PvP and at least play a few matches with classes they’re having problems with. Mostly it’s a l2p issue as I see it.

I admit I was steam rolled a few times by a warrior using GS whirlwind on me. But hey, that’s my fault if I don’t have the reflexes to dodge.

People need to scuk it up and do a little research and l2p.

NA servers should get points from a 8-10 hour window and EU servers should get points in a 8-10 hour window. When they finally get Asian servers, open a 8-10 hour window for them. All off-hour fighting should be pooled into off-hour servers.

What an incredibly bad and poorly thought out suggestion. Or… do you actually think everyone that lives in your timezone works the same hours you do?

This thread implies that a Tier 5 Server is “losing” to a Tier 1 server. This is not true at all. Quite a few low ranked and mid ranked servers win every week. They get the same weekly bonuses a Tier 1 server gets too. And many of them don’t want to rise up in the tiers, because then they run the risk of turning into a Tier 1 server.

Trust me, none of us in the middle of pack want that. Then we would have the skill lag and long ques people on Tier 1 servers are constantly complaining about. Trust me when I say we have abokittenely zero desire to either play your servers, or be like your servers. That just would not be any fun at all

The problem is not that it’s too hard.
The problem is that it’s too much at once:

  • Difficult (two different instantkill mechanics, with the hardest to spot AoE circles in the game and an abysmal camera)
  • Punishing (~1 silver for repairs, ~1 silver for a waypoint, ~7 silver for a Ticket)
  • Time consuming (walk all the way back/wait for a res after every attempt. Then wait for other people until its your turn)

And worst of all:

  • Temporary (if you don’t finish in two weeks, you won’t be able to try again for another year. if the same enemies even return…)

There has been a lot of confusion among some players as to what the Queen’s Gauntlet is. This is content that was intended to be hard and challenging, meaning that not everyone will be able to complete it. Are there flaws? Sure, I can name a few bugs that I’ve seen pop up. But overall, these fights are not “freebie achievement points”, especially Liadri. If you want to win, learn the mechanics of each boss.

Now, regarding the term “challenge”. In simple terms, it means a task that is difficult. In the real world, people will have their own definition of what is or is not difficult. To me, the Clocktower JP was pure bliss. To others, it was like scraping the bottom of your feet with sandpaper, then jumping into a pool of salt. In the game however, it applies the term “challenge” in the purest sense. The design of the Queen’s Gauntlet is to have each player use game mechanics to how they should be used. Movement to control enemies’ paths. Dodge to avoid strong hits. Tells like red circles or movements that show an attack is incoming.

While the content’s bosses have set mechanics, players are able to adjust their builds to counter them. Trait for more mobility, damage, or conditions. Weapon sets provide a variety of skills that you can combine with your Utility skills for combinations. Food buffs that supplement your stats. All this can help reduce the level of challenge, or increase it if doesn’t compliment the target boss mechanics.

Again I bring up the fact that not all players will be able to complete this challenge. Because one player may find it impossible to do doesn’t mean it’s broken (yes I know there are random bugs here and there). Patches and bug fixes aside, the main mechanics are still punishing for some. But remember, this is a challenge. A very kittene. Don’t expect Anet to lower the level of difficulty so that the Queen’s Gauntlet (or any other hard content) is less of a challenge. For full disclosure, I have yet to beat Liadri. I reserve the right to scream at my monitor if it’s hard, but I refuse to ask for an “easy button”. If I want my win, I’m going to earn it. So should everyone else.

This is a great match up so far and let’s keep up the great work. RoF, we are way ahead of where we were the last time we met the Dzags.

I would like to apologize for my ROAR in the RoF TS. Yeah, for those of you who don’t know, I’m Tiggy, and I can not stand and will not put up with babbletalk when we’re playing a game. It’s reset night. I don’t care how much you Swedish players don’t like German tourists, just because we’re matched up against a German server.

I’m certain there are Swedish Nationalist Groups with their own chat groups, and you could vent your problems there. The rest of us here are trying to play a game.

Let’s get on with playing a game.

I see so much complaining, some legitimate (sync q), others just very predictable ones IMO. Just wanted to state that despite what the topic page in pvp forum may look like, a lot of us are actually having fun right now in Solo Arena, I just had some exciting matches and match making is already getting better.

Anyone else feeling the same? I don’t want ArenaNet to get the wrong message, I’m thinking a lot of us are actually in-game playing right now when others are filling the forum with complaints that could have been easily foreseen (matchmaking needs to get better, leavers, leaderboard concerns, hotjoin invaders, random maps etc).

Nope, I’ve very sure they knew what to do if he won. As for it being stacked against him? All they needed to do was one sentence, and it would have been stacked in his favor irrepairably:

Achievements are the new "!"

I didn’t even notice it really until recently, that I am treating the achievements as quests….yep….quests.

You open your Achievement panel and look up the ones you have/want to do just like a quest log. They pile up with every update and need to be done to get certain rewards just like a quest log, and the actual achievements themselves are just like “!” Quests!

These are very cleverly designed exclamation point quests! the only real difference is you don’t need to visit an NPC to have it added to your hero page/quest log, it just does that automatically.

Quest: Convert 200 Quartz Crystals into Charged Quartz! (sounds exciting! oh my!)

Quest: Complete 20 Events while supporting (insert random name here) (I’ll get right on that!)

Quest: Arrive at The Bazaar of the Four Winds by taking a ship from Sanctum Harbor. (whoa now, this one sounds tough!)

If I had listed these to someone who has never played this game before, this would look like the most boring, mundane, run-of-the-mill content. These are just the “living story” ones, but even the base achievements are just “hunt for X area” or “kill a bazillion creatures”

These…are…NOT….achievements! THESE ARE QUESTS! (and boring crappy ones to boot)

Achievements should be a BRANCH off of a quest, not be one itself.

Complete a path of Arah without your party stepping on a corpse.

Win an sPvP match without being defeated and have a score of at least 100.

Complete CoF1 in under 8 minutes! (lololol)

Defeat “Insert specific boss here” without wearing any armor

Capture and defend a single camp in WvW 3 times consecutively. (defend event status completed 3 times)

These types of things are things you can do PARALLEL to the content you are doing….they aren’t the direct cause or result of the content, whereas every new Achievement I see added during the Living World….IS JUST ANOTHER QUEST!

Agreed. The staff skins in this game are one of the worst designed collections of skins. It’s either go for Bifrost (assuming you’re into rainbows) or choose from a million different boring designs.

When I logged into the game today, I was horrified to find out that the shrine of Balthazar had just been deleted from the engine to be replaced with the Royal Terrace.

As an RP player, I am just shocked by the complete lack of explanation for this, lore-wise. The shrine has been an important hot-spot for roleplay on Drakkar Lake, and I think on the other inofficial RP-servers as well.

I know that RPers only form a very minor part of the community and that we are not lucrative. But I just don’t understand the reasons for this change, and I hope that some devs can explain the following things to me:

- why has the Royal Terrace been put in this place and not on the other side of the former Great Collapse? There’s literally nothing there, except for a vista at the side.
- what is the explanation for a queen wiping a sacred place from a city called Divinity’s Reach? That could be considered blasphemy.
- what do the priests of Balthazar and the practising soldiers say to this, lore-wise? The Crown Pavillon is an arena, and Balthazar is the god of fighting, but there is not a single connection to him in this new patch, so it’s no replacement for the shrine.
- will the shrine come back or will it be permanently gone?

I hope that there are answers for this, thanks in advance.

Any content which could possibly be too hard for a majority of the player base to complete should NOT have any achievement points tied to it. A title/skin/mini or other item, sure… but not achievement points. Nor should it count for any meta achievement unless there are other choices to complete instead of it. (like how the Dragon Ball pvp achievements during dragon bash didn’t count for the meta)

It absolutely should.

That is what an achievement is.
