I’m not getting why this bothers people. Maybe it’s because I live near a reservation and know about how missionaries stomped in and forced the natives to convert using fear and brainwashing – and when that didn’t work, violence was acceptable. Anything to get the ‘heathens’ to serve their god. The zealots are scary and disturbing and they SHOULD be. You don’t force your religion on others to use them for your own gain.
This is also a MMO, if someone isn’t on your side then you have to defeat them in classic game fashion. Again, I know in RL there is no talking to a zealot or a ‘separatist’ to get them all to miraculously see the light and change their ways, gaming takes that to a fight to resolve the conflict. And don’t forget – when you foil their plan to convert itzel by talking to the itzel or throwing rotten food (peaceful/non violent), the zealots are the ones who order an attack to stop you.

The Lore Keeper has you hide the eggs in the Hylek camp then to give them a taste of their own medicine which they deserve.
To be honest, I saw the Hylek being pretty nasty religious freaks throughout the whole thing. You don’t go into another land and try to convert the natives through force and fear and that is what I heard during their ‘sermon’.

Going to do this now since I’ll likely be in bed before the next test time is done.
Revenant feels unpolished. This could be because we’re all being jumped in at level 80 with little time to understand how skill sets work but it doesn’t play like the grand summoner of champions I was expecting. Range hammer is nice, heavy torment inflict is nice, but it feels like the class is lacking in something. The dwarf stance is infinitely more useful than the demon which is disappointing. I still haven’t figured out all the mechanics of the class but I’m guessing the jumped to 80 and time limit has a lot to do with that. There’s a skill lag that could be a bug but also, in character creation, the Revenant is giant on the screen. I had to take mine down to minimum height to see her head.
Cinematics are bugged. The opening to HoT has almost inaudible audio and the scene where Rytlock appears had no audio at all. I can’t imagine these are intentional features. The opening story was impressive – I enjoyed hearing my character talk more and having a lot of spoken dialogue tossed out there. That’s probably why it was a huge let down when the Verdant Brink section began.
Now before I go into this, I want to say that I like the new map. It’s beautiful. It’s got a great feel to it. I had zero lag and no issues with performance. What I wasn’t fond of was how repetitive the events are. Constantly mowing down enemies to protect the Pact wears thin on about the 3rd time, especially at night. It feels like a grind without much challenge or element of chance involved. You know what’s going to happen, you stand around and press 1. I’m guessing they’ll be more added to this and more randomized events closer to release but as it stands, it’s really boring. Compared to the story bit before, it’s a drop in mood and quality. Add to this I’m fairly certain the event with the Sylvari shooting at the champion Mordrem was hopelessly bugged unless it was intended to run ten+ minutes with nothing on the side bar and no progress.
I do want to say that the wyvern event chain is great though. Not a fan of the egg gathering but I see how this could become easier once gliding is involved. Is this the world boss of the map? Because if so, I really like it, I was hoping for something dragon-ish.
Another thing I want to point out is what a pain it is getting around. Based on how this changes once you have a glider, I’m guessing it’s intentional. You can even sail into the middle of the map and walk on the vines once you have one though I think that’s not supposed to happen, haha. This forces the player to have to grind those Pact events to get points.. which stinks. Again, I’m really really hoping for more of a variety of events and randomized events or this will get boring quick.
Little bugs I saw – vendors without names, just numbers. POIs with just numbers. Missing items. Dialogue getting cut off (during the wyvern chain in one section, the frog would just shut up mid sentence). Possible bugged event. Possible bug that you can fall through the map by walking on vines in the middle (I got warned I was leaving the demo area). Events need balance polishing – when a bunch of heavies are all falling over, it might need a little work.
All in all, I’m happy to have had the experience of betaing this section of Heart of Thorns and I look forward to the finished product.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
Do… do people not get that a closed beta isn’t a chance for you to kitten around and get a solid preview of a finished game? Did they think they were getting a pony, 1000 gems, and a free level 80 Revenant for the weekend? Did they think if they couldn’t make it they’d get a free legendary as compensation for portal farming? The amount of QQ on the forums is staggering, especially since this is the only place I’m seeing it.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
When you and I and everyone else farmed for that portal, we had no idea when the beta would be. It could have been on the Wednesday when I won’t be home. It could have been the weekend I’m scheduled to work at a local festival. It could have been in the middle of the night because of EU players. It could have been any time Arenanet decided it was going to be and when it was convenient for them.
You and I and everyone else accepted that fact when we farmed for that portal.
It’s okay to be disappointed but I don’t understand how this wasn’t considered before. I knew there was a chance it’d be at a time I couldn’t participate, why didn’t the rest of you?

To the OP: No. No. No. No. No. NO.
I don’t know how many toons you have, OP, but I have 20 and I’ve done World Completion and Personal Story multiple times. Like so many times that when I get to some maps, it’s muscle memory on auto-pilot. Please don’t suggest that I have to do it all over or I will eat your face. I’ll already be starting two new toons for HoT because of the new class so I’ll get that ‘starting from scratch in old Tyria’ experience but I wholly expect to be rewarded retroactively for all the things I accomplished in the base game, as I should be and as ANET feels I should be.
Obviously if I have 20 toons, I’m not getting bored with the game or a ‘lack’ of things to do in it and I VERY much think from all that I’ve heard that HoT is meant to be experienced as a level 80 character who has finished most of the base game content and is ready for more.

Crafting Mawdrey is worth it more so you can say “I crafted Mawdrey” than anything else. It’s a very long chain of events and lots of time gated crafting – it took me six months to finish but doing that final step had me cheering. I do use Mawdrey II quite a bit because I have 192 Bloodstone bricks, no need to craft more from dust, so I suppose that’s a nice reward. Oh and the backpiece but the sylvari it’s for isn’t level 80 yet.

I was disappointed when I put the shoulders on my male sylvari and BOOM, no butterflies. Butterflies are a female gendered thing now? There was absolutely no way to incorporate butterflies into the male version and it instead gets to be generic? It’s also irritating that the male versions of many armors are dull and bland and wholly covering when compared to the female ones. Also, because that’s all Charr and Asura get. When you have a race with interesting body markings like Charr it’d be nice to have options that show that off.
Also I wanted a girly asura mesmer to show those bookah how dumb and untalented they are in style – thank goodness some of the outfits AREN’T unisex on asura.

Here’s the thing: I would have set foot into WvW completely on my own even if it wasn’t required for map completion. Who knows, I may have found it fun, I may have learned how to play, and I may have considered it a fun distraction from PvE.
Instead, all I remember is a place of utter frustration and players who killed a wandering lone naked unarmed player again and again and again. Heck, when I ran with a group, I watched them slay people there for map completion. Oh and the whining about PvErs there for map completion not helping the server and could they please leave so real WvWers could get in.
Maybe I’ll get over my irritation with it, I did with PvP, maybe I won’t but this is a big change for the better.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
Ah the whining.
I did full map completion on one out of 20 toons and I did it back when armor cost money to repair. Think I asked for compensation when they took away armor repair costs? Nah, I was glad I wouldn’t have to deal with it again.
Now I’ll have three toons who will get map completion when this goes live without me having to deal with gankers, trolls, or other types. When I go into WvW, it can be because I actually want to play WvW, not because I want a POI I’ve been trying to get for two weeks.
Oh but wait, should I demand compensation because I already did it once when it was ‘hard’? Nope. My compensation is never having to do it again and getting to say I completed it once when it was a butt pain.

Magic Learner said: “Anyone preventing you from starting your own non zerk group/guild? I guess not except you, so no it’s not an issue, it’s only matter of you not using available tools to find players who are similar to you and who want to play game in manner you do.”
There a reason you’re picking on me specifically and justifying some toxic behavior?
I have a small guild. I spend 90% of my time with people who aren’t elitists. They don’t always want or have time to do dungeon/fract content. That leads me to the LFG tab. Enter the problem with some people who view this game as an extension of their penii (which might get changed to ‘kitten’ because of the forum filter).
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
Mn-kay, on a Fractal that high it’s pretty reasonable to expect people wanting specific builds because of the difficulty involved. I only do scales 1-9 for that reason. I’m not skilled enough for 40+ and I will never be. For truly over the top content, you do have to expect people wanting the most game-breaking and effective stats and they should advertise in LFG as such to keep others out. You sure don’t ever see me joining a group that says “zerk only” or “no r**ards” or “speed clear” because I know it’s going to be toxic and for a build I can’t manage.
That said – all this elitism is kinda gross. Zerk warriors don’t matter in the reactor fractal if none of them learn how to deal with the disappearing floors and fall to their deaths in the first minute. Hilarious when the condi-thief has to solo the fight because she’s the only one who learned how to navigate. I hate that fractal, I take back my vote – team Gnashblade now.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
Which content is affected?
All of PvE but very specifically dungeons and fractals.
What is the problem?
Honestly? Zerk elitists are the only issue – i.e. those who insist everyone be zerk, learn zerk, and not be “kittens and scrubs”. This leads to exclusion in guilds, in dungeons, and in fractals by zerk elitists. Pretty frustrating when the LFG tool for the thing you want to do is full of ‘zerk only’.
The lesser problem this causes is that it completely washes diversity out of a game which encourages exploration of builds, eliminates challenge by zerk builds breaking content which should be difficult, sucks the fun right out of dungeons, and discriminates against those who have reaction time difficulties or IRL disabilities which will not “get gud” with practice and make zerk not a viable play style.
Personally, I’ve not had an issue with feeling “less viable” because my builds do what I expect them to. I don’t expect to break the game and down enemies in a single swipe though either.
How does it negatively impact your game experience?
It sure is super fun to be called r*kitten and have a group of aholes punt you from a dungeon even though you’re doing a stellar job and they’re the ones dying. Sure is great to need to run a fractal and have to take a group of complete newbies because the others are all “ZERK or GTFO”. What happened to actually enjoying the game and setting challenges for yourself? What happened to the diversity of a group contributing to completing content? I’m scared to PUG for dungeons because I don’t need the added negativity – I have tried zerk, I have a few partial zerk, it is extremely hard for me to play because I have reaction and depth perception issues.

I did try again after I’d calmed and after 30 minutes of failures and waiting, the RNG luck gods blessed me with knocking out Vorpp’s shielding a second time. I moved behind Vorpp to knock him out… and no action ever appeared, pressing F did nothing, no option to knock him out!
I had that twice. Kept going and finally succeeded – with every bit of my armour, but for one piece, broken.
I had a panic attack because my nerves cannot take unfair garbage like that =/
Not trying to be insensitive, but if a game gives you a panic attack (any game) maybe you should not be playing it/them.
Maybe anet should have a game that works then and isn’t a bug fest? An unfair, buggy mission is crap.
I don’t agree with the bug fest statement. They are usually really quick about getting a fix out for bugs. So let’s hear your example of what a non-buggy fair mission is.
I enjoyed the new mechanics/tactics and I hope there are more to come. Just because a player can’t make it through a mission doesn’t mean the mission is bugged or unfair, perhaps it is an indicator that player needs more practice. Just a thought, and again not trying to be insensitive in any way.
No Refuge. Which wasn’t easy but it was do-able. I didn’t encounter mission breaking bugs and mechanics worked as described. It was a challenge for me but one that I could adapt and succeed at. I actually enjoyed it so that’s what I’d call fair and not bugged.
So, the fact the “Knock Out” option didn’t appear for me near Vorpp when his shield was down was NOT a bug despite the fact it should have and hasn’t popped up for others when it should? The people who got stuck in stealth after being spotted were not experiencing a bug? The Golem AOEs being bigger than they appear isn’t slightly unfair? The fact there’s been a fix for one of those since this post says that yes, that mission had bugs. I haven’t tried it since the fixes though.
Also, I said before, I’m disabled – “get better scrub” doesn’t work in some situations. No amount of practice is going to fix my damaged reflexes. Having bugs on top of an impairment is insult to injury. I had to be carried through that mission. Usually I only have to resort to that in jps =/

“Because I had to do it the hard way” isn’t a reason to refuse a change in gameplay that’s beneficial or better, sorry. I completed Personal Story twice before nerfs, the new system, and new rewards were added. Do you see me protesting constantly because I did it “hard mode”?
I’ve done map completion once out of the twenty toons I have. Once. Between the constant costs of repairing broken armor (yes, I know that was eliminated in future patches), the frustration of some jerk killing me two feet from a POI when I was naked and unarmed and KNEELING in an attempt to convey that I was just MCing, camping for hours and hours and hours waiting for a camp to turn my server’s color for more than a minute, and just the general BS from my own server for being there not to help fight but to do MC – I swore I’d NEVER do it again. It wasn’t worth it, it’s not like a Legendary just falls in your hands if you do MC. No, you still have all the crafting and dungeoning and other things to do first not to mention the luck of either finding a precursor or grinding enough gold to buy one. NO idea where this “easy mode” crap is coming from. Removing WvW completion isn’t putting a dent in the crafting of a Legendary or making it super easy at all.
It’s frustrating, boring, and forced to have to toddle into WvW for MC. It would be great to have it split, I’d be happy with just PVE completion myself.

“I am tired of people using expressionism to tell a story, did Guild Wars one need lesbians, dumb teenage men or disabled kids to make a good plot? No.”
So basically, you want all characters to be the same and not possess the individual quirks and traits that shape and even define the unique personalities every person has?
Sorry but from this disabled person, it sounds like you want able bodied straight smart men to tell all your stories and take any other portrayal way too seriously. No, GW2 doesn’t “need” lesbians, dumb teenagers, and disabled kids but they sure do add some much needed diversity. I happen to like a disabled female character who isn’t treated as worthless, unlike the way I’m treated in RL. It’s a nice fantasy. I like Braham for the dumb teen Norn that he is and, even as a feminist, I know that isn’t how men are. He has to grow as a person and I’m waiting to see that happen through the LS. And seriously? You know, goodness forbid Anet actually realize there are more than just heterosexuals in the world and that maybe they deserve a place in a fantasy world too. I can’t say I think Jory and Kas’ relationship will work out past the honeymoon stage but the fact that it’s there and not treated any differently than a straight romance is pretty cool. Gives me hope maybe I’ll see myself represented someday.
