DD adds greatly to Thief builds. It is one of my favorite trait lines. It well designed offering valid options to every weaponset. Too many are fixated on their single favorite build from thepast which was leading to “Must play d/p and nothing else”.

In spite of some who do not think a thief should be able to defend themself or use the tools that are given to do so, it makes other condition builds other then p/d and its stealth and fire work. Unlike some who thing smoke field then a heartseeker through it to stealth as the height of “skilled gameplay” just because it takes a few buttons DD gives ways to play both with and without stealth.

DD in no way shape or form made the thief “worse”. The issue is with the nature of the enhancements made to other classes realtive to the thief. The measure of its success is not the few faces of people who refer to themselves as the old guard that hate it , but the number of thieves that are in game that use it and there a whole pile of those.

This hardly means “thief” in a great place but the issue not DD.

As example the fact Engineers have sneak Gyro has NOTHING to do with DD.

I agree Thief is still not in a great place, and thats due to unfixed core issues. Now as DD comes along the developers sweep all those issues under the rug and hope DD blankets and dazes everyone’s eyes from the “slightly” wider range of Thief mechanics and builds. And in time hopefully everyone will forget and will be so content with DD that there will be little to no complaints about Core Thief.

As I can agree that DD relative to other class specializations is at the bottom of the barrel, with probably the least amount of time put in trying to develop “New Mechanics” (Recycled Acro-like traits), I still wont shy away from the fact that core Thief had and still have unaddressed issues.

And for the scrappers, with their sneak gyro, No that in no way effects a DD in the slightest, but line them up now to a Core Thief in which we specialize in Stealth, Agility, Shadowstepping, “Evasion”. You’ll be pretty uphappy about the scrapper’s ability to practically walking mass invis indefinitely. (I know it’s not indefinitely, but just needed to emphasize the point.). EDIT: I mean for goodness sake we use Shadow refuge which leaves the biggest indication of where anyone is. It’s Aoe Food. But a scrapper can go invis with out any telegraph indication. Generally you know where a scrapper is because of the gyro, but the point is, (Sitting ducks, vs Flying Geese) -Stagnant Shadow refuge vs mobile Sneak gyro.

We Get Stealth Debuffed by almost everyclass
We can be outstealthed (When not using D/P)
Our shadowstep ability can be done better by a Rev
Our might gain was stripped
Traits were switched around which killed Dagger/Dagger builds.. The list goes on..

-How do you feel Thief matches up to Daredevil?

Daredevil is a testament to ArenaNet’s hypocrisy. They first gutted Acrobatics based on the reason that Thief evades too much only to give us Staff Daredevil who can dodge/evade 24/7. The extra dodge bar beats Core Thief hands down. I can’t even see myself playing my Thief without the extra bar…that’s how inferior the Core currently is to me.

I’ve seen many Core D/P in unranked who tries to make it work only to be outplayed by a DD because they can break from BV and counter attack with Bandit’s Defense, which is at a lower CD than BV. DD has better mobility than Core since DD can have swiftness 24/7 (Dash+Acro) while Core lost the pre-HoT Feline Grace. Staff skill #5, Vault, deals more damage than Backstab which is both an evade and an AoE without the stealth requirement. Some evidence also shows that Staff’s AA is better than Dagger AA…and the list goes on.

How do you like Daredevil, and do you play it often?

I play DD for the reasons I said above, but I don’t like it one bit only because now there are two mandatory trait lines (DD, Trick) and only leaves one line for something else. The choice between DA, CS, and Acro has not been easy since I personally need both CS and Acro so my choice becomes between DD and Trick and obviously DD wins because of the extra dodge. But it’s not a choice without regret since Trick increases initiative pool, initiative on steal and lowers steal CD that my build also benefits from.

I don’t play Core build anymore and I worry of what kind of future Elite spec can come after DD seeing that the extra dodge is something that the Thief needs regardless of the Elite spec. I think that if ArenaNet make the extra dodge a Thief’s innate ability that players will never play DD unless they want to use Staff and I would be one of those players who won’t be playing DD.

So thieves are forced into a mandatory Trickery, and Daredevil right off the bat. I agree with you, I feel as though 3 evasion bars should be innate, but I also believe if we wanted to increase abit more build variety, shy down on the mandatory trait lines like trickery. We should have the extra 3 or 5 initiative that trickery offers innately. That way we actually can choose freely with out having to worry about the small initiative pool.

I also feel as though the the trait rework has to revert back to how it was before. A player shouldn’t be locked to just 1 trait tree each. Where’s the diversity in that?

I’m confused. If one Thief is DD and the other is using a core build, their builds would not be mirror. If you’re asking who generally wins in a 1v1 between a meta DD build and a pre-HoT meta Thief build, the DD would usually win because, among other reasons, the damage modifiers in DD are better than the ones in CS and Bound is just that good whether it’s used for its damage or for additional, uninterruptable stealth.

Apologies, Mirror in the sense armor, weapon, sigils, trinkets were all the same. But yes of course one would be DD and other would be Core Thief.

I believe the DD wins, all things being equal.

That said, I still think D/P is superior to any other option, thief vs thief, so if you’re coming up against staff, s/p, s/d who do not off-set D/P that’s a major factor in victory.

DD DP wins vs CS DP (assuming DA/Tr/X build) if equal skill, just due to the battle of cooldowns/resources and the edge DD gets by packing Pulmonary Impact, Bound, and Bandits Defense.

And where would S/D lye? Nice hearing from you Kole. Been a while.

There are still old names that I still hope to see in this feedback. But all of your points are on point and I agree with you all. I just feel as though DD needs a complete rework. The effort and time it takes to copy and brainstorm off an existing traitline (Acro) isn’t very thoughtful at all, and stripping our traits down so that our “might” gain, 1500 steal range, HP conversion (Practiced tolerance), Etc, isn’t very thoughtful at all either. I could go on and on, Thief is the only class I have and bothered to make, in my 3 years of playing this game for 5.5k hours alone. There are still core Thief issues that need to be addressed. The communication from Arena’s team has slowed down concerning Thief forums.

- Although I’ll still play this game regardless, I am very concerned about the future of our place in this game. We are slowly but surly losing our roles, because other classes can simply do it better than us:
-i.e: Scrappers stealth is pretty much a moving shadow refuge.

I liked my build before HoT better, but that was before they nerfed condi clear, removed the precision to vitality trait, jumbled the rest of the traits into terrible places and finally removed guard stacks from wvw. After that pile of nerfs daredevil became the better option the second HoT hit stores. With all the new reveals dumped on top of the nerfs to baseline endurance, the added mobility of daredevil tops anything on base class now. But like I said, if I could choose between my build today and my build 8 months ago, my old build would win hands down.

Yes I must agree. Although it wasn’t a direct nerf to Thieves, Indirectly they nerfed our HP pool Gain, by removing Guard stacks. Which to this day still don’t really know why. Does anyone know why? I don’t really understand why the majority of all classes have a reveal debuff either. My build 2 years 8months to 2 years ago still works pretty well with no complaints from me. “lightning Blade”. But I guess i am just used to playing the High risk/Reward spec.

I still stick close to my Core Thief.

Haven’t made a forum presence in a while, but I just have a little question. It will actually be nice to hear from other old high skilled Thieves out there. I know since expansion there has been many new Thieves (Daredevils) on the come up, and I always love running into “new gens”when logged on roaming Sea of Sorrows EB. But anyways as I said before I would love to hear from some oldies, because I don’t want a bias from all the DD new gens that really haven’t delved into core Thief yet.

-How do you feel Thief matches up to Daredevil?

I must say I’ve run into some pretty nicely skilled DD’s while roaming. Though I don’t really particularly like Daredevil, I will forever be a Critical Strikes core Thief guy. For my oldies.

How do you like Daredevil, and do you play it often?

Although I’m still really rusty, and not really at my prime anymore due to my extensive break from this game, I don’t really face too many problems when fighting Daredevils.

Hi,

I just want to throw in my 2 cents. I would definitely stand behind your build idea if this was 1-2 year ago. But simply things have changed, and condi Meta has gotten ludicrous.

I am not really too precise or sure what your actual build setup is, due to the fact that I believe gw2buildcalculator server is down, because the page is not showing up for me, but I have a general idea of what you intend to do, because I myself have mained this build for over 2 years, (Full Assassins gear, Knights trinkets with Precision being main focused stat instead of toughness, Rage sigil with critical haste via critical strikes, etc.) Since I can’t show you my exact build setup, I’ll show you the video that I had made back in the day.

This build shined due to me taking advantage of the Trait: Long Reach(1500 steal range), which we are no longer able to possess. Getting the jump on someone before they get within range was a Thief’s greatest asset.

-If you have any questions feel free to ask. I’ll try to answer to the best of my knowledge.

I really didn’t finish the video, because i got extremely annoyed that you didn’t once, from when i stopped viewing which was about 4 mins in, use your steal skill. I saw many opportunities where your steal skill from Thief could’ve come in handy, but you didn’t use that extra stealth, you instead shortbow 5’d away. I am definitely not hating on you man, just try to be more aware of everything you have, and use them to their full potential. You are a condi spec, and P/D at that. Which thrive from stealth upkeep. So just alittle friendly heads up from an old Thief

I was dash trolling all over WvW today. It was fun. We’re the new run away warriors.

Though the bug where you have to /dance to get unstuck was very common.

Nicely said. We’re the new “Nike Warriors” of Gw2. Instead of us resetting fights, and hiding in stealth, we can make like warriors and do it visibly, which would make enemies QQ even more, since now you can see how fast we can engage and disengage, it’s not all just hidden anymore.

Dash does make me pretty happy.

I was being chased by a 5man Scrapper Fort Aspenwood (The Aids and HIV of Gw2) group in WvW, and they couldn’t keep up.

Dash along with teleports of course, and mobilization hindering debuffs didn’t affect me at all. And I am definitely a FAN of the immob loss on dodge. So if you’re in the air and get immob’d (That annoying bug where you cant use any skills or heal) then you can cleanse immediately.

RE: Vault.There was a data-mined target option that will make ground-target skills center on your highlighted target, so don’t worry about that. Don’t make it a mechanic when it will be a choice.

I have to agree that it definitely needs evade frames, but going up to 6 Initiative again will be FAR too expensive.

I agree.

The same reasoning behind why Roy listened to the Rev community feedback in regards to unrelenting assault and it’s evasion frames. The same issue applies here. You’re not in control of your character, thus indicating the high risk/high reward nature.

Revenant Steal Skill

I honestly thought we’d get a steal skill that had something to do with riding the mists like a 1.5 sec mist form or 2sec unrelenting strikes (As OP as that sounds w/ the DA GM Improvisation).

The fact that we get a 2-3 second slow. (Tool tip is incorrect which says 1 sec), is beyond me, and I really don’t understand the reasoning behind getting the slow.
-My only gripe with this thrown projectile or glob or what ever it is, would be that the slow needs to have a velocity increase. Likewise with our dagger projectiles, 1 or 2 strafes to the right or left from the target you’re trying to hit, and that slow would be wasted.

Would much rather it be an instant slow that the target gets on them opposed to having to throw it at them, with a .5 sec cast time

LOL.. jeez. I love coming to the forums and viewing this comedy. Very entertaining. But on a serious note, if anyone delete’s their Thief, that’s time, and money invested wasted. And fks that Anet doesn’t give.

But this demonstration does give proof that Thieves can band together on a single issue. So I applaud you for that, But quite frankly I’ve been off and on lately not playing as much, racked up 5.4k hours, (Only class and character i have), I’ll be d*mned if I delete my Thief.

So, I noticed something in the preview for the Engineer elite specialization:

“The Purge gyro will zip around with you cleansing yours and your allies’ conditions every so often. The team designed this one as means to give the Engineer some much needed defense against conditions.

Why is condition cleansing “much needed” for the Engineer but “situational” for the Thief? Thief has the worst condition cleansing and overall core durability in the game.

Escapist’s Absolution is already being vastly overestimated by players and developers alike. On average, a Thief is not going to be evading once per second or even once every few seconds. In real PvP, successful dodges often don’t even count as evades due to evading past the hitbox of an attack. Please, please, PLEASE reconsider adding Escapist’s Absolution to the Driven Fortitude minor. We need it to survive.

I believe that the condition removal on evade should be in acrobatics, and just removing a condition with a dodge (Meaning not needing to dodge any attack to activate trait) should be granted to daredevil, but meh.

I would like to see Impairing Daggers velocity bumped up.

These daggers shouldn’t get obstructed by air either, and definitely shouldn’t miss all 3 daggers if the target strafes to the left or right a centimeter.

I also found myself seeing that only 1 dagger actually hit, when target did no dodging or blocking involved.

P.S bring back 1500 range steal.

Once Pulmonary is on your target, it will ignore blind, evade, block, even range. The ways to really not take the hit will be through invulnerability, damage inversion (ala Defiant Stance), or damage reduction (protection, Endure Pain).
You could technically land a Pulmonary and if you’re quick enough, activate Basilisk Venom for an unblockable/evadeable stun when it pops… Or use your dodge with Evasive Empowerment to increase the damage.

So headshot will be pretty overpowered with this trait huh?

As always, things are open to change. If this playstyle is too strong, we’ll have to adjust it. There’s a possibility that it shouldn’t stack intensity, or maybe its damage is too high, or a variety of other ways that it could be adjusted. We want it to have strong play and also feel rewarding, while not being the ‘only’ thing that you seek to do in order to deal damage. We’re looking forward to seeing how it works for you during the beta weekend.

But all I can say is S/P meta will be strong
S/P Engagement:HeadShot> Black Powder>Bounding Dodge>Proc bassi venom within Stealth>Tactical strike> 2nd rotation: Black Powder> Bounding dodge> Steal+Tactical strike. By then your initiative pool would already be ready for another black powder dodge. So S/P new D/P.

But people need to remember it still does root you, so it’s not all that great.

But will the evades from pistol whip cleanse the 1 condi with escapist absolutionist Karl?

After watching that video, it actually inspired me to play that game. I wish I had the same feeling with DD.

LOOOOOOOOL so true, Monks are so trash in skyforge. But nice to look at if you want to see some nice staff acrobatics. I’m a slayer, because it plays like a Thief in gw2. Can’t get away from gw2 in any other game I play.

I am going to try that game. But I would love to see similar animation for thief.

It’s a great game, I would definitely recommend.

But Thief staff animation can definitely be enhanced with some sort of skyforge’s Monk inspiration.

I think staff has alot of capability, and potential. The animations are what kill it for me.

Karl if you could look at this video from another game called Skyforge and their Staff wielding “Monk” class, I believe you’ll be able to pull some staff animation with of course an Anet twist so it’s not completely identical and then legal issues may occur.

P.S: Watch in 1080p (You’ll feel like you yourself are playing the game)

wait for wednesday – we need to know if we’ve been blessed or cursed.

Anet knows they’re standing on a thin line with the Thief community, so they already know that if they don’t make this other option (elite spec) viable then a majority of thief population will either quit or switch toons, which is not what they need for their game.

Based on their forums the ignored feedback will be the worst part or maybe it’s because he’s on vacation or something.

Vacation. Is that a surprise to anyone? How long do you estimate this one? Sorry im digressing.

I have no idea it’s a different dev that gave out the DH and tempest changes so at least we know Karl is not in the building and thief elite spec is not ready yet. I expect us to go before ranger who are obviously last for unfortunately obvious reasons hopefully he’s back before they announce engi.

Well lets all get our hopes up for tomorrow’s reveal!

Only to be let down because all these Thief threads to try to get a dev to communicate with us is annoying them, thus bumping engi or ranger next in the rotation for reveals.
