Defend Your Back
I understand you guys are passionate, as am I. Oh God. I am.
But lets turn this frustration that leads to infractions, and potential bans, into something useful for the dev’s to read.
We want them to look at our posts, and communicate, acting like barbarians, and doing irrational things, will only make them shy away from us even more, lessening the chance of us even getting any sort of savings grace.
Shoot i thought after 3 it was a ban :p, but i still wouldn’t go to those lengths. I just really hope we get some sort of communication, or sign okittennowledgement that this thread was read by a dev.
I would, but I have 2 infractions already lol…
Grow a set. I have 4 :P
I got like a 2 week ban or something, for calling Karl out. On top of that, I can post like once an hour or something, getting an overflow 3600 second message.
Not really a big deal. There’s more cancer in these forums than information, so if I got perma-banned, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.
To kind of get back on track, I expect whatever weapon/sepc we get in HoT is going to suck and be woefully underpowered (at least compared to every other profession). I don’t think it will be because they don’t know how to balance thieves insomuch as they are just apathetic when it comes to this one profession. The dev in charge really doesn’t seem to be even mildly enthusiastic about the profession, given how he can’t even remember trait names or what they do.
Edit: I’d go so far to bet that thieves will have their spec revealed last or second to last, and if the datamined info is accurate, it will have the second lamest specialization name, Dare Devil. (Dragon Hunter being the first)
It’s almost like the Mesmer spec will bring more stealth to mesmers and the thief’s spec will bring less. Go figure.
And we’re supposed to be the master of staying in the shadows, and acrobatics. I really believe that the Dev’s are intimidated to come to the Thief section, because 1 we’re an Elitest profession. If you are going to play a Thief, and think you can just be casual with it, and stay in the background, while other’s are up top fighting in the main lines than switch profession. We are elitest, and with that comes kitteniness, arrogance, and condescension. Anet doesn’t want to be constantly reminded that they can’t play their class, let alone fix, or remember traits for the class. They don’t have the time to play Thief like most of us on these forums do, which is high tier game play. So in anticipation of getting verbally annihilated, counter argumented or corrected, they shy away from the Thief community. (But that’s just my opinion)
It says “Thieves have an affinity for setting traps, and using venoms” yet both are very weak, and the builds that we are forced to play have been nerfed.
Hey speak for yourself, I’m using a trapper backstab build and it kittenin rocks. But I agree with everything else you’ve stated.
I used to run traps I started hating it because I had to rely on a rune if played properly it can compare to d/p since CiS is no longer mandatory but you could just just run traditional d/p and be more effective. The stealth on trap should have been a trait this shows how sorry they actually and how bad they are supported by their own ckass. Even if the runes come to PvP I doubt I would go back to traps.
I agree we should’ve had a trait that gave Thieves stealth with traps. I totally agree. and thats actually a great suggestion!

Yeah, well all power to you. You are 1 in a million. A thief that can successfully run a trapper spec. I would be interested in seeing a montage video, but thank you.

I made my Thread before even reading this one, but basically you asked the same thing, and your concerns were spot on with mine, and I made my thread before even reading any of this.
Communication is what we need. If Anet is facing problems developing the Thief, they can atleast let us know that they’re having issues, and even go as far as ask the community for some input. (Goes for all classes not just Thief) communication is key. Thieves are being left out in the dark in game, and in real life.
-Anet said they are releasing elite specs in terms of when they’re ready.
“There are people looking forward to every reveal–they’re out in the order in which they’re ready. Nobody is being ignored. ~RB2” -Twitter
So has the Thief really been challenging to fix, test, and balance? If so let us know that, let us give you our ideas, and let us brainstorm.
lol, we’ve given them tons of feedback and probably their jaws are sore from chewing on each of them. I’m sure that each Thief ideas are scrutinized and objected on and the back and forth is not looking pretty. But that’s what I think they are doing. In reality, they might have the ideas pile up in the corner gathering dust until crunch time where they pull any random ideas and implement it to the Thief without iteration…like what we’ve seen so far. Some of the changes to the Thief doesn’t even makes sense.
I just wish and want more communication.. There should be 2 staff for each class. Have 1 person be Thief designer, and the other Thief coordinator and communications and be on forums. So that they can relay some if any information about future class changes, or implications.
As far as I know there is alway at least two person looking at each profession. One is the head of the balance team (coordinator) and the other is the one who is actually making the changes (designer). Then I would think that they will have all the team together eventually during the development to throw ideas and feedback at each other as part of the iteration process, where some of the good ideas for the Thief are shut down and burned to never be brought up again.
Well that’s depressing. Because that goes to show the lack of communication from the Thief forum coordinator. I didn’t know there was one. And yes those lost and burned ideas sigh.. that the public will never know about. Should atleast be written down and posted to a thread so we could see what we could’ve had and QQ about not having it.
My hope is the new spec,if it fails it is safe to say, after 3.7k hours on thief im gonna reroll.
Would hate to see you reroll. Lets just see what this elite spec brings for us.

They are not going to answer you: reality is, too many players rolled thief (for RP purposes/pve mainly) and this class will continue get nerfed to garbage tier for the sake of:
- reducing numbers of thieves in game to improve statistics
- to please QQing massesOh and obviously they will never admit that none of them ever touched thief or they would know about backstab bug for example or wouldn’t embrass themself so badly on POI stream by not knowing neither trait names nor what they do.
Yeah it really pained me seeing that Karl couldn’t remember trait names, and he is in charge of Thief, but I know he has a lot of other things to do other than Thief, but it just hurt.
Sorry, people were talking about potential steal changes and new buttons… and that came into my head and was too good to let slide.
Thats quite okay., and you are free to express your questions to Anet in this thread too.
Best Elite spec would be the Capt. Ginyu move from DBZ. Switch classes with your opponent then murder them because thief is so badly outclassed.
Hey I don’t want them to feel insulted and then lock this thread. I am really earnestly looking for answers from them.
It says “Thieves have an affinity for setting traps, and using venoms” yet both are very weak, and the builds that we are forced to play have been nerfed.
a scapegoat for all qq, that what we are
Not to mention our Might boon has been stripped from us, and given to Shiro, Vigor cut in half, and Stability limited.
So I would like to know from you Arenanet, with your own words, and no quotes from GW2 Wiki either (Experts at stealth and surprise, thieves can move through the shadows, vanish into thin air, or steal items from their opponents and use them as weapons. Thieves practice an agile, acrobatic fighting style, which can make them very hard to hit.) , because that definition has become obsolete it seems.
1. We currently can get outstealthed by mesmers
2. Our burst damage has been cut in half numerous times, with little to no compensation
3. Steal Bundles like (Ice Shard, or throw gunk) are borderline useless, and produce a fraction of damage towards an enemy.
I only hope the revenant steal skill will be something useful, Or maybe even get a different steal bundle on different legend changes, same goes for elementalist. I wish we got different steal bundles that related to their element attunement, which would force Thieves to think a lot more about when to engage.
4. There is a lot more counter play towards stealth (And i’m not knocking it, because i think it’s a great idea), but when a Thief gets perma revealed with reveal stacking that’s when it becomes a problem.
5. Shiro now has access to a blink with an evasion frame, have we become outclassed in blinking as well? not to mention the CnD- like skill #5 on Sword/Sword that rides the mist backwards, but also pulls, and the Unrelenting Assault going through and following portal teleports. (But I digress)
—Anyway I can go on and on, but i would really like these questions to be answered.
1. How do you define the Thief class?
2. What our role is to offer?
3. What differentiates us from the other classes?
4. What are our pro’s and con’s?
EDIT: I have 5.4k Hours on this class, and this class alone. (All I’ve played since beta) so I apologize if I seem a little ill mannered in anything. I’m just frustrated with the constant threads I see popping up about how Thief has no role in this game anymore, and no where to be, how many threads need to be made by different players about the same feeling about being outclassed until someone listens and hears us? I just wanted those questions answered, and any additional information if possible.
(edited by AikijinX.6258)
Well yet another week of a let down. Thieves still can’t steal off a revebant, and no elite spec reveal. But I’m over it at this point.
If CnD had a shadowstep than we’d be a stealthed Shiro. Currently shiro’s #5 ability does just that. CnD’s animation, shadowstep, and pull.
Only time will tell. Tomorrow moment of truth. And honestly i wont be surprised if we don’t see a teaser video. They didn’t do it for Elementalist, so they are staying consistent with their inconsistency. Hats off to them. But i’m sure the go to excuse will be they’re working really kitten HoT and have no room for anything else.
~Won’t be surprised if this thread gets locked either.
Lets pray for staff and rifle off hand set.
Yeah it’s unfortunate, but at this point I just want to be able to know the elite spec, I’ve waited enough.
And until it’s actually shown in a stream, I’m still taking Rubi’s confirmation with a grain of salt.

So in regards to Mesmer burst, I just have a suggestion that can be discussed and will be open for feedback
So currently mesmers have a trait that allows err.. I can’t remember i think 30% extra damage to foes not using a skill, and basically when caught off guard, or interrupted/stunned(not able to use skills) you can get 1 shot bursted.
So my suggestion to tone down this incredible burst that Mesmers have right now, would simply be, do what you did to Thieve’s “Mug” Trait, don’t let the trait Crit, Other wise give us back Crit on Mug(steal).
I would even go as far as not letting mind wrack Crit, but that’s me personally
Also if this trait is adept, or base, then feel free to tell me.
I don’t think fury is supposed to go down from 56seconds-32-12-6 but thats just me. Maybe i was lagging or something.
wot m8?

About Flanking Strike, maybe thrill of crime? Or where do you get Fury for No quarter?I´m not happy with that development though :/
I will miss the condiremove in stealth, but I just don´t want full kitten SA to be meta. -_-
I’ve been playing this build for a long time now, over 9 months respectively. So a side of me is kinda happy that the acrobatics line isn’t as strong.

Executioner and Improvisation will be a definite tough choice, because as it is we have the: Ferocious Strikes: Critical damage is increased by 10% to foes above the 50% health threshold, and then when enemies get below 25% We also get Executioner: Executioner: Deal 20% extra damage when your target is below the health threshold. (Formerly Critical Strikes)
So we get extra damage for targets above 50% threshhold, and below 25% threshhold, But having that compete with being able to use your steal skills twice via Improv.. Hmm… Improvisation: One random skill category is immediate recharged when you steal. You can use stolen items twice. 2 Ectoplasms anyone?
Executioner threshold is 50% not 25%
Mehh.. That’s even better lmaoooo. So we get 10% extra critical damage against foes above 50% of their health, and then an EXTRA 20% damage to foes below 50% of their health. I call it a win win for builds that revolve around high crit chance. A.K.A mine.
I Hope the CnD change is not affected in WvW. Cloak An Dagger: This ability has been un-split and its damage normalized. Damage of this ability has decreased by ~17% in PvE and increased by 25% in PvP.
What does unsplit mean in that context?
Who knows
There is No ICD Skill fact for Haste on Thief, am I to believe there is no ICD on Flanking Strikes trait?
Flanking Strike: Gain haste when attacking a foe from behind or the side
Haste: This ability no longer removes endurance. Gain Fury in addition to Quickness when activating this ability
And Is the Cloak and Dagger change affected in WvW as well?
Cloak An Dagger: This ability has been un-split and its damage normalized. Damage of this ability has decreased by ~17% in PvE and increased by 25% in PvP.
Although I’m going to miss my Long reach (1500 range Steals), 1200 base is alright, I suppose.
They really did a number on critical strikes, Overrall I like the buffs, it actually made CS very appealing. All these extra damage boosters are incredible, and quite honestly i’m wondering why we are getting so much, but i’m not complaining.
I’m glad they removed the Endurance loss on Haste, I didn’t see an ICD skill fact though. So hmm.. Perma Quickness. lulz..
Flanking Strike: Gain haste when attacking a foe from behind or the side
Haste: This ability no longer removes endurance. Gain Fury in addition to Quickness when activating this ability
I will miss the old Practiced tolerance, but maybe our base vitality will be increased. I even got my Huntsman up to make that Vitality—>Ferocity food. lul.
No more Richochet— Good.
No base range increase, still we have lackluster 900 range, only range we have is our 1200 steal, and our underwater weapons lul. (By the way I hope the tow Line pull for our Spear was fixed so we don’t get dazed while we pull our self to the person)
They finally answered eveyrone’s QQ about Last refuge. It is now optional, and in the Adept Line.

Pretty Impressive.
I’m really not advocating for this new engi skill, nor do I like the idea of it, but this will also give Thieves practice with using different utilities, other than Shadows refuge, and yes I know it is stealth in general, but shadow refuge is just a big “everyone i’m right here, please AoE for 10secs”
Since I heard about that displacement skill that the revenant will obtain to teleport someone else to a random position, I put refuge on the shelf, and decided shadow trap is much more valuable to me. (But that’s just me)
What is the question
now SR and blast is working as in the past
How so?
I wouldn’t be surprised if they wait until next week during the elite- specialization stream to “fix” this, and reintroduce the stealth fix as a “buff”. They just want to use this time now and the feedback from the general population to see whether or not to actually go through with this. So it’s a (trial and error) sort of deal. But hey that’s my opinion.
None the less if you’re a t1 skilled Thief Fix or no fix you’ll be able to adapt, thus still being able to kill.
Edit: I also won’t be surprised if they magically revert the 4s pvp reveal back to its normal 3s with the upcoming fixes and elite specialization introductions

The patch that just occurred, changed nothing about this stealth bug.
Lets keep this thread healthy, I don’t want it removed like the other stealth bug related threads.
I can only imagine how bad “last refuge” is.
Confirmed.
And already made a post on Thief Thread as well.
As of now, after a Thief has dropped stealth (without attacking anything) right afterwards there is a 2sec reveal debuff.

Rifle- Applies [X] Condition to.., As soon as I see something like that in the skill description I am deleting my game and retiring. over 5.1k hours, over 2 years, and only class I’ve bothered to make and play. If they make the mistake of making rifle more useless than P/P, I’m done.
I’m pretty sure a range weapon has to get a condition type actually pretty much any weapon, if you mean damage condition then yes I understand but I’m pretty you would want some cripple, vul etc in there.
I’m talking in terms of bleeds/torments, etc

I’ve enjoyed the trap, but it definitely is rare that I actually choose the skill. I’d think the most natural use of it would be to place it on a road near a tower, then head to the other end of the tower to take care of other things, but it simply does not work this way. If it were a pure teleport I’d carry it far more often.
I would like to hear some of your suggestions to make this skill better. Or do you agree with my stated suggestions above?
As someone who would love to run this but due to the stated problems will not, I wholeheartedly agree.
Thank you for hearing me out, and Feedback.
-I really actually feel like the trap would be perfect if it had a 3/4 cast time. But a guy can dream.. And on gw2 wiki, it states the cast time is 1/2 not 1 1/2. Honestly I just miss the old OP shadow trap. :p
I love this trap, as it can get you out of a serious bind when played right. My main gripe is that it’s unreliable unless you plan to port along a road or a location you’ve already tested and proven to work. That’s more of a shadowstep issue in general though.
Yeah I agree sometimes just 1 hair to the left or 1 small incline or decline is enough to throw it off. But I still run it to this day, because it saved me more than its killed me 1, and 2 when fighting other thieves with refuge this trap can provide for some good counter play. You can’t rely on shadow refuge to get you out of all situations. And if you know how to use it, shadow trap has the ability to counter a refuge users (sometimes) It’s done simply by placing the trap inside the refuge, waiting about 2-3 seconds (Shave off some refuge time) then trigger shadow pursuit to disappear, and then you’ll be behind the back of your foe, (stealth or not). I feel as though if thieves don’t rely on refuge, and SA trait line, it’ll challenge their skill, and in time increase their skill level. (My opinion)
I still run it sometimes, like when my guild trebs hills from the wall outside the bottom right camp, I leave the trap on the wall so I can port up from the tunnel by the tower or just outside the camp. I’d love it to be more reliable tho, the other changes you suggest would be icing on the cake.
Where is that location you are talking about ?0_o I really only am in Eternal Battlegrounds
(edited by AikijinX.6258)
Shadow Trap – Set a trap. The first enemy to trigger this trap becomes marked. You may activate Shadow Pursuit to shadowstep to the marked enemy.
Duration: Duration: 120s
Range: Range:10,000
Miscellaneous effect: Unblockable
I currently am unhappy with how this trap works. Besides the obvious (Gets obstructed, by any rock, pebble, feather, etc) in your way.
But what really makes me unhappy is the ICD. I don’t know, but I feel as though this trap should work similar to how our Ambush trap works, (Where you can lay down the trap, and the ICD will renew in the background). So when you’re ready to lay down another trap after destroying your previous one you are able to, but if triggered goes on full CD. I don’t like the fact that when you destroy the trap you have to wait the 45 secs to place it down again, then when you don’t successfully port back and it gets obstructed same long CD occurs.
I also feel as though the cast time is a bit lengthy, and easily telegraphed (Although to be fair many other class skills are easily telegraphed). But the 1.5 cast time to actually destroy the trap is too long, and can be interrupted easily. What I would suggest should happen is change the cast time to 1s, which would make it worth while taking, the trap.(Although I main it already)
And Lastly I feel as though when the trap gets interrupted or when there is no path to port back and it is obstructed when you try to cast “Destroy Trap” it should not go on CD. Just like how our initiative doesn’t get drained when we use Infiltrator’s arrow on terrain that we can’t get to or when infiltrator’s signet doesn’t go on CD when something cannot be ported to,the same concept should be applied to shadow trap. Make the fail-safe teleport fix that you applied to our porting abilities universal
Suggestions
1. Have an ICD running in the background after trap is placed down. (Similar to Ambush Trap)
2. Reduce Cast time from 1.5-1s
3. Don’t let Interrupts or Obstructed/Unavailable Paths put trap on CD
4. And for Godsake, I don’t want to trip over pebbles
Feel free to make suggestions or discuss. Thank you for hearing me out.
Hopefully these suggestions will make it to Anets ears.

Sigh, posts like these are what kill Thief class, Thief Survival strategies, and Abilities
I liked the video edits, Can do a much better job than I can.
In therms of the video content, There really wasn’t much to go off of. There really wasn’t a “Wow” moment. (In my opinion) and I am not saying anything to attack you or your skill, I just didn’t find anything that awed me. Kind of a normal Thief video.
I would like to see you roam in WvW, there you can get much better footage, since you like to explain your decisions of gameplay. I feel like telling us what you do and why, in pvp is kind of pointless.
But none the less keep up the good work, I hope to see more, thumbs up
So what will come of Long Reach 1500 range steal enhance trait? Which currently is an adept tiered skill. Was there an explanation to why it was taken out?
That was quite saddening to see.
