This is just another jab at the Queensdale train posing as some argument for “the greater good”. At least be honest. I am not a big fan of the champ train, but only because I consider it incredibly boring, not because I am concerned with the way other people play. What is this recent obsession in here with Queensdale? How those players play is neither your business nor mine.

a) completely wrong premises, nothing is changed by the megaserver in regards to this
b) proposed system heavily abusable – no
c) we have a blocking tool and I don´t need other players deciding for me what I want to see and what not, I am quite confident I can manage that myself
A real good addition to the block feature would be autodecline to lfg groups if you are creator and someone you blocked tries to apply.

I rather enjoyed pnp rpg in the past (and on private persistent NWN servers for that matter), though I never understood how you could do it properly in MMORPG, but well, to each their own and I can see your current concerns. But what puzzles me: Are those two “unofficial RP servers” really that different from the others? In my experience, rp communities are really miniscule in MMORPG, have you really turned the atmosphere rp friendly on those servers? Cause I cannot see how the new map distribution affects you – you probably were among a huge majority of non rp players before, so what changes are you expecting now?

Great news! Just one minor concern or rather a question: As language is a criterion for map selection, how does it work: selected language in game, geographical region or former home world? I´d really rather play in an english/international environment than in my “native” environment.

Good luck with TESO! See you back in a month.

If someone leaves TESO, they don’t necessarily come back to a lesser game. They just find a third game to replace the prior.

Yeah, fanboys… They think if they don’t like other game, then no one else should or will.
I like gw2 and i’m not really excited for TESO so far, but i still find those comments ridiculous.

funny thing it is exactly the same the other way around.

PvP rewards in PvE?

pvp is the hardest mode in any MMORPG. Any dedicated pvp player will destroy any pve content. Seems legit to give out easy mode rewards optionally in the hardest mode. If you feel this is in any way unfair for you, go play pvp and see how you do… Hint: autoattack 1 isn´t too successfull.

you can level very easily “on the side”. Grab your leveling alt and do the dailies. In mass events like LS content, try to tag as many events as possible (you don´t need to do a lot of killing as those xp are rather meagre). If your path leads you close to some vista, WP, easy heart quest, well, good for you, grab that one, move on. You will level in no time without even noticing (if you do just dailies, it doesn´t even add more “duty” playtime).

GW2 and Wildstar will not be allowed by NCsoft to directly compete and in theory destroy each other. That would mean a weaker bottom line. They are targeted at different crowds they are set-up with different players in mind.

hmm, possibly, but I cannot really see how that is to be prevented if things go that way. Anyway, if that talk from Wildstar marketing is true, it will be a great opportunity for a lot of dissatisfied “noncasuals” to jump wagon and a very smart move by NCSoft – though I doubt this is really a corporate strategy.

Even with a founder and boss that has been a gamer, multicorporate enterprises are rather clunky and somewhat clueless when it comes down to micromanaging the products of their various corporations. I simply cannot see a board of executives understand e.g. what a raid is and how it appeals to different audiences :P

Anyway, I as player can only wait and see if there is really some substance behind Wildstar´s “challenging content” marketing. Could as well end up in WP on death without any penalty-land again.

Could work but would need constant updating from the company which I don’t think would be sustainable. Look at the random tele things that came out with the aetherblades during the queens jubilee, they are not used because they go no-where, cost a lot to make and have not had any input from ANET since they where released.
What you are asking for requires a huge input of developer time, if they have the time go for it, if not this a a very back-burner thing.

I don´t think it has to be like that. Part one of a map drops, chest location is set randomly. You could go there already if you can identify the area. Following pieces only complete the map. Certainly, this is a gross oversimplification in regards to coding, but it certainly doesn´t need a lot of maintaining once implemented.

People always want new shinnies.

there never has been and never will be a free market without competitors, so how exactly is this a special situation?

In other news: WoW Killers are unicorns.

It is just, that GW2 had like how many competitors since release? FFIX reloaded was the only true MMO release, and that has failed before.

So there was none, and ANet was lucky. These days are over. We have two big MMO releases right around the corner, and some very potential multi-player titels.

There will be pressure, I for one would like to see ANets answer on this challenge. Silence is for sure the worst approach.

sure, sure, in 2012 and 2013 there were no good game releases. And all already existing MMORPGs had shut down for GW2.

Of cause they have to keep fighting for their market share, either with product quality or marketing. Still, that is the same way it ever was and ever will be.

Yeah, I just fear, that ANet might have gotten too used to the absence of competitors. Hell, even the new WoW expansion will release this year. I am guessing that this will take its toll on the game too.

Meanwhile, ANet is like: Nah, no need to show our players which direction we are going, they luv us so much anyways.

I don´t think you should fear anything, because we, the players, can only win. Either one of the upcoming games (let´s stick with MMO here, I don´t know any MMO player who doesn´t play single player games on the side) is really a lot better or more appealing to you or me and we just go there – or the competition pushes GW2 to new limits. Either way, win-win for us.

I do see that with the Scarlet battle, they have once again tried to blend a learning process into the actual battle.

  • First players fight the knights, where they are required to watch their conditions, and attune to specific colors.
  • Next players must attune to all three colors, to enter the teleporter.
  • During the battle with the hologram, the players must repeat this mechanic that they should now be familiar with.
  • When the hologram splits up, players should now remember the strategy that they used at the knights, and attune to the correct color for each hologram.

I have never seen this encounter fail, but I doubt that is due to a learning experience. The Knights simply sort the wheat from the chaff, groups with an abundance of bad players don´t make it into the instance (yes, I know, an oversimplification seeing the way those instances are probably populated with players, but I guess a tendency is there).

you offer a solution to something that isn´t a problem at all. What do you care about other people skipping or selling? It is not those people´s fault there are barely any other LFMs up. If people are looking for a party to do dungeons “the proper way”, they can form a party themselves and look for players. What keeps them from doing that and complain instead about the way other people play eludes me though.

zerging will prevail in any content and can only be fought by two additions that will never make it into GW2:

a) body blocking – the engine is huffing und puffing already, the additional load would bring it to its knees.
b) friendly fire, but that would effectively turn GW2 into a free for all open world pvp, only a few niche developers dare to go this way, our little fluffy paradise here certainly never would in a million years (and personally I wouldn´t want it to do, I´d rather play one real pvp sandbox MMO on the side for that kind of thrill).

The biggest problem about magic find is Anet never officially mentioned how it genuinely works.
By the way if I’m wrong and they have in the meanwhile please post a link.

So basically what you have is some people that did a little math, made some assumptions and BAAM, that’s how MF “works”, and the community has been rolling with it as fact because some say, or the wiki says.

This. So many different explanations. I’d love it if we could get a nice little red post detailing how exactly MF works. At the very least I’d be able to tell if it’s actually worth going for full MF or should I just sell all my greens and blues.

actually it has been explained and it is widely known. The shadow of doubt cast around here is people not understanding randomness – man, I didn´t get a precursor yet again, Anet must be lying to us.

And it does exactly what the % implies – improving your chances by x % .., of what I leave up to your google skills.

This thread sure did do a good job of validating the previous one. Oh, the irony…

People who are better than noobs are not elitists. They are simply better. Some better players would like for noobs to join the ranks of good players. Some don’t care and would rather see you leave their game space.

THAT is the difference between the threads. Your post only validates this one more…

No hes pointing out that the OP pretty much proved he’s an elitists at the point where he suggested Anet force players learn to play the game in a certain way, and punish them if they didn’t. I think we should probably go the next step and have Anet implement guides that lead you to a zerk build and take you through tutorials that show you have to use a FGS on a mob stuck in a corner. Sounds quite good actually.

there is a wide range between stack behind pillar X and asking yourself if you are doing something wrong after being pulled in by a Legendary Knight the 20th time.

If you review my post history you’ll notice that I made a thread about “What happened with party play?” and quite frankly that’s the only thing that Gw2 is missing. You can’t possibly organize 100+ people with different mindsets to do the same thing

It’s much better to make party play, “force” people to party with other like-minded people that they like to play and finish this bloody conversations.

mmm I really see your point.

I am a casual player but the average player skill in this game boggles my mind.
People do not swap weapons, use consumables, use utilities properly- heck people don’t even use their weapon skills properly.

I have lost count on how many times I have seen Mesmers facehugging a boss twanging away on GS 1- or casting feedback on the one melee mob in a battle.

And make no mistake it is not new players- because in my experience at least genuinely new people ask questions and are eager to learn.

I hear Anet developed more comprehensive tutorials for the China release- I have good hope we will see those implemented.

I still don’t think that it is really an Anet problem though- the game is easy to pick up- you don’t have to master it to play most content – the skrit hits the fan when those same people show up at a fight that at least requires you to read map chat- never mind actually pay attention

The problem is really the term casual here and specifically the go to defense “but I am a casual player” in the GW2 community. MMORPG do not mainly require special hand coordination skills or insane reaction times. The thing they really require is the ability to perceive a given challenge/situation, apply your mind to it and find a solution. This is basic human nature (or at least one would think).

Casual players, the real ones, not the ones who equate “casual” with “very bad” as an act of self defense, may not have ascended gear, maybe not even full exotics, maybe they don´t have a special food buff in their inventory, but they still have their working mind. And even if one was really not able to put his mind to work on a given challenge, it takes like 2 minutes of google searching to find a page that explains a build, class, skill, strategy, whatever.

But that is the thing- I call myself casual because I do not research builds for hours, have Ascended gear or do Dungeons much at all- to me that is a casual player.

I do however have a mind- and I use it to the best of my ability.
I do my best and I learn from my mistakes.
I am by no means a good player

What I see though is players not even bothering on reading the description on their skill bar- that is lazy.
There is no other word for it.

In big fights you at least have to have some situational awareness, read map chat and pay attention to what is happening around you.

Thing is people don’t and they don’t care and I don’t think Anet can really force them because they will say- play how I want or leave

yes, that´s what I implied – you are playing casually – and not badly :P

The issue here isn’t bad players – it’s bad design. If they started designing content which was more than zerg fests and DPS races this issue would resolve itself. I’d love a return to Guild Wars with companions, hardmode zones and all that good kitten but that isn’t very likely to happen anymore now is it?

And why would you support blatant gold sinks like foods and vendor buffs? If anything you should be calling for them to removed so ANet won’t balance the game around them anymore. Maybe then we’d see a bit more balance in WvWvW. The casuals aren’t going to pay up anyway so why even bother? There is no skill involved in passive buffs.

no, it is not. If people cannot even grasp concepts of zerg fest and DPS race, how do you expect them to perform with more complex game mechanics and roles?

first of all, you are in no position to call players of a different playstyle “pig-headed” nor are you entitled to get into their groups. That being said, albeit harshly, I am rather sympathetic to your problem. Even a lot of the better players don´t like those “speedzerk, exp. only, 5k+ ap” groups as they are often not populated by the, hm, let´s say, most pleasant people. And there is always the very real threat of being kicked for some guild member or to “sell a path” in parties of people you don´t know. If you look often, you will be able to find the occasional friendly group that couldn´t care less about your gear and class. Lvl 80 is usually still a standard though – but the game really, really favors downscaled, geared lvl 80s. But that is a task easy to accomplish. Best advice: Start your own party or venture into dungeons with guildies.

Thanks Anchoku. I will try some of the examples you gave. To put it in context = when I’m feeling “in the zone”, i.e. had a good day’s session, I do try the daily dodger, but I have trouble against the Ettins in Queensdale.

I have trouble against the Ettins… I know right?

I’ll totally admit, I have the PEBKAC problem. It’s not the hardware, but the brain.

I do have a better shot at dodging when it’s me, and the one mob.

But, to exaggerate, when it’s an event, usually a massive one, where…

Oh my God, gotta keep up, run run run, ok it’s melee time, omg, red rings on the ground everywhere, people are scattering, going ranged, ok, I’m shooting, trying to shoot, CRAP, I clicked swap weapon twice, and I’m back to melee, there’s blue smoke everywhere, is that bad, wham, dead, what do you mean “How could you not dodge the huge boulder coming your way?” Ummm… what boulder? Who threw it? I didn’t even see the throw…

That’s what I’m working with here.

But when I talk to people, many comment on how “Everything is so telegraphed and easy, it’s like playing chess…” I don’t know what to say except, holy crap, must be nice to have reflexes like that, heh.

Anyways, hopefully soon, I’ll have Ettins down, then I can move up to the other examples you gave.

Sidebar = In the Knights fight, when I’m sucked in to their vortex, I frantically tap Dodge right after I notice I’ve been drawn in. My success rate is 50-50, heh. Forgettaboutit if I had to do a timed Dodge, at least with the “event panic” going on.

But thanks again for the examples, I’ll try them.

EDIT Addendum = What is hard for me is that I don’t have to dodge the shot, I have to dodge the projectile. In some mobs, I see the huge “power up” effect, I dodge, and then the mob corrects it’s aim, and hits me anyways. I’d have less trouble if the “window” was bigger i.e. if dodging would “count” if I dodge during the “wind up” phase, I’d be hit less.

For example, I’ve tried dodging worms. They wind up, I dodge, they toss the boulder, I’m hit. That TINY (for me) time span between when they release the rock and it hits me is the dodge window, and, well, I’m not that good to be able to dodge mid rock “flight” if that makes sense.

I really don´t understand this. I am middle aged now and probably my reflexes are nowhere near they were when I started playing computer games – it is very, very easy, a lot easier than dodging in most parts of the game. The circle appears, a huge knight leaps into the air, which is impossible to miss, there are no particle effects blocking this sight, he rises, pauses a short time when he reaches highest point and then slams down. When he reaches maximum height, you can dodge, easily, within a rather wide frame of time.

I was recently considering coming back to GW2 since I heard there was going to be no more living story. I’ve since learnt that we can expect more Living story in the upcoming updates and all the thing you outlined here are still an issue.
Your post all comes down to Risk vs. Reward, Something Anet seems to have no idea how to manage. Odd because they seemed to have it worked out to an extent in GW1.
If you are interested Dino I went into this 9 months ago here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/suggestions/Risk-Vs-Reward-in-GW2-The-Underworld/first#post2170821

their problem is their “include all types of players”-approach. If they give reasonable rewards for harder content, they will exclude a big part of their playerbase. “Casual players” will play their “I have a job and a familiy” routine (because better players simply cannot have that too as everybody knows…) and demand the same rewards regardless of skill/dedication – massive uproar expected. When GW1 was released, there barely was a casual MMORPG playerbase, so it didn´t matter there.
