GW 2's Emptiness.

Totally agree with OP. The world is empty. And seeing a few people in a zone doesn’t change that either. The world is down right empty. The most people i ever see are in LA. I’VE never played an mmo that was like this. Its all down to the way the game was designed. 25-70 area’s give no reason to go back when your done. To me this is what Arena net should be working on instead of adding temp.content. The world feels like a wasteland.

I call BS. Most MMORPG have even more vacated areas below max level. At least, GW2 has some incentive running below level maps with downscaling.

The problem with the current game/gear progression: you can progress in gear, but it does not “unlock” any new content for you. I am close to getting the new tier, but then what? Farm cof 5% more effectively? I really enjoy the game still, but I just cannot see what I will be doing in GW2 in half a year from now – and no, the answer isn´t farm champs for ascended armor.

Fractals took WAY too long

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

The problem with fractals isn´t really the time it takes to complete a single one, even the more annoying ones. The thing is, once you enter a fractal group, you are possibly “stuck” for a long time, which really take them out of the picture during work week evenings. Maybe a fractal session should consist of a lesser number of fractals with an adjustment/splitting of rewards. Not talking about a reward nerf here. Just divide the fractal runs and split the end rewards proportionally (including of cause an adjustment of the time gating etc).

Farming makes you Stronger

Algreg.3629

One other thing that is really desmotivating, is that at the end of all of this, the players that purely focus on farming and faming only, will once again end up richer.

Let me make sure I understand your argument. The players that focus on making gold the fastest way possible, will get gold faster than the players who wait for gold to come to them? It kind of sounds like real life. The guy that works 2 jobs to put himself through college and then works 100hrs a week as a lawyer will make more money than the guy who works 20hrs a week at a party time cushy job.

Yes I understand you want to play the game a certain way. However, don’t complain that it will take you too long to get an ascended weapon playing it the way you like it. It’s still 100% possible for you to get an ascended playing the game your way, it will just take a lot longer and you don’t have the patience. At least you have the option that, if you don’t want to wait, you can go farm up some mats or gold.

What is the alternative? Anet just gives away ascended weapons to anyone who walks up to an asceneded vending machine in LA? People want to work towards something so that when they finally get it, they feel a sense of achievement. This is what MMO’s strive for. Not just making people grind. The ultimate key is they want people to feel a sense of accomplishment, then set another goal post that people work towards to get that feeling again.

Either you did not read anything here or you just do not understand. Yes, other MMOs have gear you have to work for, work for hard in many cases. Yes, that creates a feeling of achievement, one which I enjoy myself by the way. But there it is usually part of the normal gameplay, farm this quest or that raid for x kind of item – when I feel like running that special quest, maybe today I´d rather go for another item or xp farm or whatever. GW2 continues to force you into tighter and tighter schedules the game dictates. And yes, it is “optional”, that is not the point. Call it a personal flaw of mine, but I do not want to be a mediocre player. And I want to work towards my gratification. I don´t want games to be easy. But I do not want a game that offers me less freedom of choices than my kitten normal job.

Brace yourselves! Anet Reply Incoming

Farming makes you Stronger

It is not even the farming per se. I liked games with a lot of farming in the past. I even ran raids below my powerlevel solo to aquire some twink gear. I don´t mind raiding, repeating content and all those things that usually come with vertical progression. But GW2, it just shoves a million choires into your face at their schedule. Now I have to level crafting, oh, wood ran out, where were those nodes again, ah, off to orr, farm, come back, refine, oh, need more globs, what´s the world boss timer, done, oh, it´s past midnight, I haven´t done all dailies. And don´t forget that character you parked in front of the home instance. I mean, those celestial items are rubbish now, but who knows what they could be good for in the future? At some point, that is just too much for me (and yes, I had a full set of ascended jewelery and full exotic sets of armor/weapons, so not a casual gamer I guess).

What has this game turned into?

The game has turned into something that is not meant for you.

Have you played the original Guild Wars? I did. Once in a while, a new player would appear in one of the GW1 forums saying, “Why is the level cap so low? Why can’t we keep grinding for better gear? Why aren’t there mounts?”, and we would reply telling the player that Guild Wars was not the kind of game he was asking for.

Now, the table has turned. ArenaNet realized that, whatever definition of “success” they have, it’s easier to be successful through the farmers than through other players, like you and me.

So they have changed Guild Wars 2. You are not its target audience anymore. Neither am I. GW2’s target audience are the farmers, grinders, addicts and exploiters who want every new content to be almost intolerable, so they can be one of the few who can endure going through it, in order to get some kind of reward and then try to show off; those players call this “dedication and effort”.

Other players are not really wanted; the kind of content they want is far more expensive and harder to make than easy mindless grind.

till yesterday, your adamant anti-farmer posts were kind of annoying to me, not untrue, but always with too much fanaticsm for my taste. This patch has changed that somewhat. It almost seems we had two insane farm LS events just to get on track with enough ressources to enter a new rat race for ascended gear. You run out of mats/money for your next exotic item to level up crafting, well, join the champion train. Or do the Scarlet dance once more, the event is still happening. I am still not convinced GW2 is a bad game, but personally, I notice unhealthy tendency in myself. I do no longer care what content I want to play, I can postpone that, farming i need NOW, I have to finish this, and this, and that. Admittingly, this is largely a fault of my personality, but I guess that kind of behaviour is found in many MMORPG players. At the moment, GW2 feels like a second job with a lot of meetings to prepare and attend to and quite frankly, I am wondering if my life would be a lot less stressful if I just gave up the game. And no, you can´t haz my stuff, not gone yet and much of it is account bound anyway.

You’re absolutely right. Sometimes I ask myself why I even bother but there is always that hope that presented with logical arguments perhaps a few people will realise things arent all bad like they imagine.

I dont expect people who hate time-gating to love them just cause they’re keeping far away that next tier of gear they hate more. But I would hope some might come to see it as a necessary evil that isnt all bad… nothing else. We’ll see. Hope is last to die after all.

So why bother? And: giving xp for crafting was a major design flaw to start with imo, it made crafted goods cheaper than the materials you needed for them as everyone is flooding the market with them.

Its outcome is completely meaningless and unrewarding, a major design flaw. Blame the game, not the player. This is not CS2 where anyone´s progress is hindered in any way by farmers, you are just displaying the usual case of “people need to play the way the game should be = as I say”.

the major problem is the inconsistency when it comes to dramatic/sad/epic moments. Just yesterday I progressed in the Sylvari storyline and was actually surprised by the moving story of the first death in the species and the tale of betrayal. Then you seek out the grown up squire who betrayed the firstborn, seems to have become a vile brooding drunkard. Then suddenly the whole encounter is about an illusion potion making me see blobs and colours and some funny Asuran announcer. Mood set and destroyed by an overuse of comic relief. Happens quite often in this game.

The tone should be darker.

Guild Wars 2 and the Gear Escalator

Algreg.3629

Since the game has launched, in a single year, we’ve had exactly the addition of one tier of gear, which isn’t even finished rolling out yet. This is all a single tier.

In a traditional MMO, you’d have had three tiers by now. We’re only just getting weapons in a few days. All we’ve had is trinkets so far.

A single tier of gear does not a treadmill make.

You can’t go and say oh we have a necklace rings and a back piece and then count a weapon from the same tier as a new tier.

I don’t really think Anet wants to go down the gear grind route, and there is circumstantial evidence to back this up. They’re continuing ascended gear because they started ascended gear, but they’re also looking at horizontal progression through skills.

I’m not thinking Anet wants to keep coming out with new tiers of gear after ascended.

I´d say you are grossly exaggerating gear progression in other mmorpg. And still I do not understand your reasons for trusting Ascended will be the final tier. Can you name me one single good reason why this tier had to be introduced into the game past exotics beside the usual reasons mmorpg introduce new gear tiers? And please do not cite AR. That could have been a simple addition to other armors and jewelery just like the seer mechanic in GW1. Again, I am not bashing the game for having gear progression now, but I do not see any reason why not call a thing what it is.

it is a treadmill, you constantly have to put in major effort into aquiring newly available items (yes, I know, it is a choice, still, the process is in the game). Legendaries do not change that. Before, you could just ignore legendaries as fluffy beauties, now you can decide whether you want to grind for those (and be possibly set in the future on the weapon slot) or the new ascended weapons. The debate is not whether we have a gear treadmill, we clearly have it. Question is: Is this good, bad or nothing to bother with. Personally I came to the conclusion a mmorpg simply needs some sorts artificial goals to go after (at least for me), so I am fine with the new gear tier. It still is a treadmill. Other games do this with rather easy to aquire gear tiers that become obsolete quite quickly, GW2 gives us a few items that are attainable with a lot of effort. It is basically still the same approach – keep players occupied with some gratification here and then.

A treadmill implies something that never ends. If there is a top tier, it’s not a treadmill.

What happens when you go on a treadmill. You walk and walk and walk and get no where and that’s how most games are.

Until we actually know there isn’t a top tier of gear (and I suspect legendary is the top tier), then you can’t call it a treadmill…well you can call it a treadmill but the analogy is no longer appropriate or particularly effective. That’s what I’m saying.

What Guild Wars 2 is doing is not what other games have done. And if you think it is, you need to spend some time in those other games. This is very different.

And because it is different it needs a new name. Calling something different by using an old name can only lead to confusion.

I understand your point of view, but I do not think this is the way the game will take. Since launch, we had additions and additions of higher stat items. Now weapons are there, then possibly/probably armors. Then we will be in the same spot we were with exotics, a single highest tier of all items. You seem to be quite confident they will stop there, me, not so much. And don´t forget the time aspect. It is not like you run some raid a few (or a lot) of times to aquire new gear, those ascended items/legendaries keep you occupied for months with no end yet and no certainty they will actually be the last step in gear tiers. That is a treadmill for me.

I didn’t buy other games. I bought Guild Wars 2. (Ok, I have bought other games, but stopped playing them when they became more like jobs.) I bought GW2 because “You shouldn’t have to grind to get to the fun reward.” New gear tiers screw up WvW, especially when acquisition of said gear is so heavily slanted toward PvE. May I remind everyone that EQ Next isn’t even going to have levels, I think GW2 could survive just fine with its initially stated grind free gear system.

people buy a ticket for the event, attend the anet set there and get a “reward” for that. How is that unfair to anyone who did neither of these things? And how exactly does that hurt you? Seems like some case of “I don´t have it and so noone should have it” scenario to me.

The problem is that in this case the reward is part of a set. And for many people the main appeal of these otherwise useless cosmetic (and frankly awkward to display) items is to try and complete that set.

Restricting this to only people who came to one particular event (and not promoting this fact beforehand) ruins the chance anyone else had of completing the set and therefore kills a large part of the appeal of the whole group of items.

Imagine this happening with any other kind of collectable. What if a company started a new set of football stickers for example and most of them were available with magazines or from any newsagent and then, after the launch they announced that actually one of them was only available by coming to the factory on the day of release and no one else would ever be able to get it and would have a big hole in the middle of their book forever.

It’d be ridiculous. All they’d achieve is a lot of people deciding there’s no point starting a collection they can’t complete and not bothering to buy the magazines in the first place. Same thing here.

Not that I support this nonsense but you do realize this is exactly what the makers of real world collectables end up doing, right? Collect those new Jem dolls? Well you better have been at Comic Con for the two only sold there in limited supply and you better be a member of the special club that few people knew about to buy the limited edition one there. If you weren’t.. well here’s hoping you have a couple of thousand bucks and the endless patience to fight for one on ebay. Maybe you like My Little Pony instead.. well each MLP fair had it’s own custom pony and there were ones only released overseas and ones only handed out at Toy Fair and Comic Con and ones that maybe only 2 or 3 at most exist of. Good luck filling those holes in your collection. Oh, like Monster High? Did you know there are dolls that only ONE exists of? Forget ever completing that collection…

Anet just did what every other company does – they gave the big middle finger to collectors with an exclusive. Do you want it? Get on ebay, empty your wallet, and prepare to fight. This is why I never touched mini collecting because I just knew this would happen eventually, it’s the bane of collectors and every company does it.

well, then you have to decide whether that thing you crave for is worth that kind of ressources or not. period.

I like the game too…and I’ve been playing since the first beta. It’s taken some unexpected twists in how they present the game, which some people haven’t liked, but it suits me perfectly.

My biggest advice to you is don’t let the forums get you down. The game is way fun for me…the forums…not so much. lol

No offense, but you spend more time on the forums than you do actually playing the game… so what does that tell you? You enjoy playing the forums more than playing GW2. You consistently complain about how bad the forums are, yet come here to tell people how “good” the game is….. okay.

Anyway, once you get bored, then you will stay bored until you finally decide to quit. I enjoyed the leveling process and I also enjoyed about two weeks after I hit level 80, then things went downhill from there. Utterly boring content, no bug fixes, unbalanced classes, and a ton of other glitches and things of the sort just ruined the game for me, and I’m really patient with content that needs to be fixed.

congratulations, you get the spoilsport award. And yer funny too. Attacking someone who likes the game for posting around here while declaring the game sucks but still sticking around the forum. Who is the bigger fool I ask you?

again, how is that any news? ascended gear was announced as far back as last year and we all knew what would come of it. I acutaly quit over it back then temporarily. No, exotics are not pointless, they are now transitional gear, just like masterworks and rare are for exotics. That is the nature of gear progression. Some people love it, some people hate it, but I am quite puzzled about people being surprised now. Anyone who played this game long enough to acquire said gear should have known.
