They’re targeting the super casual players. Did you expect to find something here that requires actual dedication, and preparation?

That’s why there’s no sub.

that is so wrong – or maybe we have a different concept of casual. In standard mmorpg, the dedication is in the preparation: character build and equipment. Powergaming there is to grind for the best gear and min/max your character traits (which everyone can do by checking builds on the internet). The playing itself is easy, everyone follows a strict pattern sometimes for half an hour. In GW2, the skill is more in the action itself and on the fly changing of skill setups/strategies.

I am not saying former MMORPGs required no skill or that they are not good games, it is just different here – and dedication has its reward, like improving the guy in front of the screen – and that is a good thing.

crafting is really a fun activity for me, especially for the effort of getting the right materials. Do you use the filters/search option at the crafting table? They e.g. speed up the process of identifying what you have “invented” allready and what you would need for further inventions a LOT.

I can understand your issues, not sharing all of your views, but some of your points I do not consider that bad. First, multiple guilds are not a problem at all imo, you will identify your favorite guild no matter how many resting memberships you have, and form your bonds there. When it comes to bigger teams, especially in WvW: i imagine most dedicated players will use a voice tool anway, so you can coordinate more than one party – not the best, but still a solution for now. The real downer is the ridiculous queue to enter WvW together.

"Tanks" needed for dungeons?

in Players Helping Players

Algreg.3629

Ok, so I have been watching videos and reading stuff from ANet for a long time as GW2 was being developed. One of the ideas I liked best was that they were trying to get away from the so called “holy trinity” of MMO’s (ie. tank, healer, dps). So I’m leveling away, enjoying my ranger, my guardian, etc, and then I hit the level where I can enter Ascalonian Catacombs. I have now had 4 groups in which the group was dedicated to getting through the instance, they were patient, they were planning stuff out ahead of time, they were communicating, and they all were willing to stay through wipes and wipes and wipes and wipes and….

So I ask my guild, what is going on? And I get the response “well the tank needs to do… whatever.” So, what? Did ANet move away from the idea that we weren’t supposed to require a tank? Several times on their site, even to this day, after they’ve changed the site so much, they still talk about how it shouldn’t matter who’s present in the battlefield, that everyone should be able to contribute and with good communication and planning, be able to win an encounter.

So if I get into a group where no one is able to switch to “tank gear” and “tank spec” (because ANet has been busy assuring people its not needed) how on earth are we supposed to beat some of these encounters? If tanks are required, then fine, tanks are required for this game. But don’t go telling people that you don’t want dedicated tanks and then build encounters where you have to have them!

I just spent the last 3 hours working with this group, who for all their passion, could not get past Vassar and Ralena. And this is the 4th time I’ve spent about that much time to only have everyone finally give up. Am I just stupid for assuming that ANet meant exactly what they said?

I think you need to think outside the box more. Those two are “the lovers”, right? I cannot possibly think how a tank would greatly contribute to the mechanic of this battle. But that people may have suggested that the lack of a “tank” in your party had been your problem displays the underlying issue. As long as someone will think along the lines and in the categories of other games, they will neither enjoy GW2 fully nor improve in any way. The reaction to your problems with the lovers should be “what are we doing wrong”, “what alternate strategies could we try to apply” – but you stick to the knowledge based on other games and automatically conclude, well, sure we cannot do it, we have no tanks.

while one-shots maybe a bit harsh (maybe 2 attacks would be better?), I like the idea. I find the standard Trinity approach silly, you have a human sized character being pounded by monsters the size of houses chipping away 5 percent health? No. I like how monstrous enemies are as deadly as they are supposed to be. There are a lot of strategies you can apply, maybe it IS a good idea to attack certain monsters with ranged weapons – you rarely see marines attacking tanks with knives. For your information, you can get oneshotted in ranged just as often depending on the specific enemy. Also the class thief doesn´t really strike me as the major contestant for being the Sigfried type, going toe-on-toe with giants. Warriors and Guardians are a bit more sturdy. To sum up, I think melee vs. dangerous monsters is fine the way it is, it requires a lot of the player and that is a good thing in my view.

You know those ads that say “one weird little trick”? Guess what? Open Hero dialog, click on the PvP tab, click on “Go to the Heart of the Mists”, walk through the portal to LA, you are now at the hub of the game for FREE! Yes, Virginia, you do have a hearth stone, to LA, so stop paying to jump back to LA.

Afaik it is now free to move about inside of a main town even at 80, so there’s that problem solved. Here’s my suggestion on how to reduce WP costs. Continue to vary it according to level, but cut it 50% if your character is standing within the range that originally opened the WP you are near, maybe change some existing WPs to special WPs in each zone that act this way. For example, if you are at a range of 600 or whatever it is from a WP any other WP you jump to costs you 50% less than jumping while not near another WP, or just do this for the special ones like the WP nearest Claypool or Mabon Market, the places that have the crafting stations would be ideal for this. Expanding on the auto-hearth stone idea, just make it free for each race to jump back to their respective home city from anywhere on the map.

Btw, death penalty is death penalty, get used to it or stop dying, it appears as if it’s nothing like what WoW has (had) with massive costs for armor repair if it’s heavy armor and a pitance if it’s cloth, but I haven’t played WoW in years so they may have changed that.

wow, didn´t know that as I was only interested in WvW pvp for now and didn´t even check the mists – thanks a ton!

may I ask what level you are? Good items sell for a lot, but personally, I didn´t check the TP for items before I reached 80. With the speed of leveling, it wasn´t worth bothering with items being outdated in one hour of playtime. I can imagine many players think like that, so low demand on items below endgame levels.

there are hundreds of games out there that still work exactly in this way. Play them, just play them and revel in Trinity glory. Stop trying to grind one of the very few MMORPG that are currently different into the mashed potato mass that the MMORPG market is.

GW2 is awesome. It’s just the group content that’s not so good. Really, talking about requiring more skill seeing how events work, makes no sense to me. There’s 0 skill in events. Much much less than having a tank and a healer.

And inside instances, the bosses arent smart, or use cool tactics. The difficulty comes exclusively from having a lot of hp and damage. That’s the cheapest and worst difficulty games can create

Ok. Yes, but it is allready changing now that people are more spread out. You are right, when we all started, the maps sure looked like ant-farms, 50 players turning event enemies into kepab in seconds. But now with less players at events it became harder and requires more thought – and more entertaining imo (and guess what, people are allready starting to complain about this).

There may be a way to make a better system than holy trinity. But gw2 system sure isn’t. It’s too random. Random is the oposite of skill.

no, it is not, even if it were real chaos – which it is not. unpredictable situations force you to adapt on the fly – certainly more skill than having a dedicated player standing in front of a 2 screen high monster for 15 minutes, being targeted by another guy hitting keys 1-4 for 15 minutes, and having a row of various casters, backstabbers and what not standing behind the monster for, you guessed it, 15 minutes. Seriously, I do not intend this to be a personal attack, an insult or whatever and I also do not want to lose anet customers, but there are hundreds of games out there that still work exactly in this way. Play them, just play them and revel in Trinity glory. Stop trying to grind one of the very few MMORPG that are currently different into the mashed potato mass that the MMORPG market is.

I failed a mission, cannot remember which and why. But I don´t see your problem as a big issue. those storyline missions are, well, mainly for the story and they bring you to new areas somewhat related to your character level. overall they are such a little part (in terms of gaming time, I sure like to see the story) that I don´t see the need for big adjustments here.

some heart challenges give very little “bar” for some tasks, a lot more for others. Killing monsters isn´t always the best way to fill the heart e.g. Talk to the heart guys, read what he has to say, check the area. It makes me cry a little when I see people killing monsters you are supposed to test a new asura weapon on for example. There are really just very few annoyingly slow hearts in the game. Some areas have DEs you can start which will fill the hears as you go with the event and raising fallen NPCs in the area allways gives a considerable boost (as far as I know).

2 millions bought the game, a lot of them improving their crafting skills. Of cause prices for crafted products are ridiculously low while materials are high. That is VERY basic economical knowledge. TP charge is fine as it is, we do not need to “wake up”. With lower charges, daytrading will start. While that is not a bad thing per se, for me it does not feel right in the GW environment.

The costs of traveling to WP really have to be looked into, it severly affects variety in the game. When you have to ponder if you really want to join someone on an older map, check traders there, farm some specific material, or rather continue running between Orr events for a few more hours, something seems to be wrong. While I understand gold sinks are needed, the teleport price is really off the mark. They should be lowered or the fine people of Rata-Sum have to place a few Asura Gates strategically across the maps.

Could you go back to a "standard" MMO?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I could easily go back to WoW the way it was before the expansions. I loved how difficult it was, I loved how each new area was very different to the last like one was just a regular grassland with forests, the next was a very dark forest with fog and broken old houses, the next a tropical rainforest or a caribean(sp) style port, a ghost town, a volcano and so on. The music was amazing and fitted each area perfectly. I loved the random PvP when you’d be doing a quest and you’d see horde/alliance and in place like Stranglethorn there’d be constant tension because of it. I loved how almost every area had its own instance you could do as you leveled up and I loved that reaching level 40 was a milestone because you got your mount, and level 60 was only the beginning. If you wanted to you could really perfect your character through hard work by doing the level 60 raids which were extremely challenging.

Most of that is gone now and that’s why I don’t play it anymore, but in many ways it was even better than GW2 is, especially the stark difference in each new area as opposed to GW2 where I’ve done 4 areas now up to level 37 and each one is identical to the last. It also had an atmosphere that GW2 can’t match and I don’t think the music is quite as good.

Yeah, I could go back to that easy.

GW2 age – 2 weeks
WoW age – like, hm, a hundred years?

this is the first package of GW2, it is rather unfair comparing the variety of content with games that have been releasing new zones for years. When you look at the GW1 expansions, I expect great things to come.

Level 80 Player's Problems With the Undead (Orr/Risen) Zones

Just one comment about your complaints…

Orr was sunk in a great cataclysm and was under the ocean for a couple centuries. Then Zhaitan rose it. So all that coral and stuff that seems just “Attached”? That really WAS just “attached”. Sure stuff may have grown around some of it, but still, most of the oceanic stuff grew on top of things.

It wasn’t meant to be underwater… it WAS underwater. It’s just not anymore.

I think they made the zone to be underwater, then decided that since no one likes underwater content, they made it land level, and then wrote the lore around that

the Orr mythology is as old as GW1 and the Rise of Orr along with Zhaitan is actually what the campaign story is all about – so no, you are off the mark.

simple answer: when the occasion arises. Ranged weapons till the distance closes and switching to your melee weapon in, well, melee seems like a reasonable system. I´d say having 5 skills bound to the weapons you use seems like a strong indicator for a more situational kind of play than in other games…

But the way you apply wow-terminology (it is dungeon, not raid or instance) seems to imply you are turned off because it is a different game than the one you are used to. I consider this strange, because when I buy a new game, I actually want it to be different from the ones I allready play. Luckily for you, experts estimate there are about 354789 clones of EQ, probably the predecessor of your beloved game mechanics, on the market. And only one GW2, which makes me rather happy with it. It is somewhat true though. English is quite a mess when it comes to pronounciation, and it not always obvious how to speak when it comes to certain words even because of the lack of accent marks. :| It’s especially annoying for non-native speakers.

english is comparatively easy in this regard. But every written language is “a mess” if I may use your term. There is no real connection between sign and sound, every language uses a different system of arbitrary representation.

Not very true at all. I know Portuguese, Spanish and some German and pretty much everything is straight-forward read as it is written, unlike in English. Few exceptions are French-borrowed words in German, but it’s quite eaay to know how to pronounce nonetheless.

No, letters represent arbitrary sounds. I am German myself and there is no metaphysical connection between the letter and the sound or rather sounds in different contexts in that language. I know what you mean, in e.g. German, context does not change the sound a letter represents as much as in english or “worse” french, but still the connection between the written system of signs and the sounds are arbitrary, but agreed upon by the collective. Trust me on this as a M.A. in philologies, this may sound really abstract, but it is basic linguistical knowledge (not trying to belittle your opinion in any way).

Yes, I understand that the written language is an arbitrary construction to make everything ‘roughly’ covered through the same rules previously agreed upon in order to have intelligible written communication. And it may indeed not be quite possible in some situations. It just seems like a sloppy work when I come to English (there seems to be more exceptions than rules) and get to words such as “quay”. Surely it may be something easy for people who live and breathe that language everyday to understand, but for foreigners to learn it is quite annoying.

My first point was, why can’t there be accentuation marks in English? Where in “police” is it implied that it must be pronounced as “poleeeeeece”? Surely it might be my own lack of knowledge on the language, and I really am no expert on linguistics, but the world would be a better place if they had something pointing out where the accentuation goes. It just seemed practically a lot easier to learn how to pronounce words in German than in English.

Then we have a gazillion words in which they can’t possibly expect everyone to be an expert on etymology to know how to pronounce.

Oh, I am with you there, if I had my way, we would just forget about the traditional alphabets and write in ipa (an international linguistic sign system that denotates the actual voiced sound). It is as easy to learn as the alphabets and much easier to use. But I doubt we will see that happen for generations, if ever Most weird pronounciations like “quay” usually have some historical component to them, that goes for the whole french language where at some point the development of written signs and voiced language divided a lot – things like that usually happen when authorities dictate a strict system for written language or “official language” while the spoken language follows the normal rules of organic development – but enough of this, have fun playing!

after the initial millions of players zerg through the same zones-starting weeks it is natural that we will have less and less players on maps. But I think this is a good thing. Atm, DE are really, really easy (apart from the giant zone monster events which probably require rather a lot of partakers), so I´d say having only a few people working really hard – even playing in a group/party – for DE completion is the way these events are actually intended to be. Instead of 300 people bashing 1-5 wildly.

So by this train of thought as the game ages it’s going to be harder and harder for people to level as quickly as previous generations.

Also, many of the Champs require more than 5 people at level.

And as you pointed out….just forget the zone end boss.

yes, probably, but there are a lot of sources for xp. As for the rest, I think you are wrong, champs are beatable with 3 players, maybe less – still, are you telling me you do not expect to get 5 people together to play with? The game will change to a more organized form of grouping for sure, but the day you cannot find 5 people willing to partake in these events will be quite some time away – and that will be a day to worry about. But in the next months or even 2 years, I doubt that, given the obvious success just now.

There is so much to disagree with, I do not know where to start, let´s try.

- events: yes, there are stale and also silly events, but most are dynamic in a way they draw several players in, a lot are chained and there is a really wide variety.
- event rewards void, because gear does not matter in this game? Are you kidding me? Are you actually trying to try different builds with different traits? Cause then you would see aquiring specific items is very useful.
- crafting and selling for very low prices in TP: well, I suggest you read a bit about something called economy. Of cause the prices for crafted goods are outrageously low just now, with hundredthousands of players training their craft skills in the first game weeks. Supply and demand, ever heard of those? Trying to profit from market in such an enviroment is a whole game in itself that requires quite some dedication, in Eve online, I sure do this, but certainly not in a start the fun game like this.
- I really do not share your boss fight experiences.

the anti-farming method is not only great at removing boters with farming macro but also increases gameplay as always moving on will get new you mining ores and challenges to prevent the game getting stale

This. Without the anti-farm mechanic, soon the sweet spots will be identified, then the first farm-bat (or whatever monster) build will appear, then it will become mandatory to copy them in order to keep up with the economy. So no, please stick to the current method anet. I had my fill of W/MO troll and minotaur farming for 2 livetimes.

Please no, do not start to seperate pvp and pve mechanics allready. the weekly adjustment in gw was a nightmare imo.

Is it my server or are people extremely silent?

The dynamic world of GW2 doesn´t leave much room for standing around and pondering what to do, whenever I pause on the map, some event starts nearby – hence less boredom time to fill with chats.

Actually, I am quite happy map chat isn´t filled with the usual religious, political and game vs game fights as in other games. You have enough of that in safe zones, the cities.

The term social is not restricted to written communication btw, the events bring people together in an interesting way.

What do you guys do after 80?

When I hit 80 I had barely seen 50 % of the maps, so there is a lot to do still. The scaling mechanics make it possible to join events on all maps. There is WvW too, which is great fun, crafting, farming for crafting and finally actually getting the equipment worthy of lvl 80 – and I am not even speaking of legendary sets. Starting a new character was allready mentioned. The game is very rich. I think your point is less “what to do” but how to progress in terms of power – probably not much to do in these terms if you allready have the legendary equipment you like (which I doubt at this point).

Thank you!

Totally agree with OP. You guys rock! Please resist the allready happening onslaught on your game design by people who just want yet another WoW or an autowin game were everyone is able to accomplish everything without bothering to improve their in game skills.

I Wish Vistas Were Not Needed for Zone Completion

i am not a big fan of Vistas. i dont mind having to get them but ones requiring “jumping” or other wise “skill” with extremely poor camera angels and large norn characters is obsurb. the one in question, is in “tribulation rift” as it requires “near” perfect keyboard movement and good field of vision to execute properly. but, what i also didnt read, is that some players, such as myself, are hindered by disablitlies and some actions are not possible or make certain “motions” difficult and that, detracts from the game, period. it forces a person to stop playing because of a limitation, of no fault of their own, but a design flaw, intended or not. and “Yeah” if i want to complete a map, well thats “my” choice, not anyone elses and i dont think i should be chastised for “not” being able to “complete” a vista due to difficulty level involving a “puzzle” . …………………..as far as puzzles, go, i am glad they are there for those who enjoy them, i , do not . IMHO

There are people with better reaction time because they are younger than myself or with more experience in competitive computer gaming – they will certainly beat the living daylights out off me in pvp. Hence, I am clearly disadvantaged compared to them. I did not choose to grow older or start out with a worse reaction time than others. So, remove the need for fast reactions in pvp? I think not.

Edit-PS: If graphic problems are really the issue (haven´t encountered any personally), than the solution is not remove the game mechanic, but fix the issues.

There are only a few vistas that are hard to get to. Noone requires you to go for the zone completions, you could as well argue remove this or that hard to reach POI or difficult “hearts”. Leave the people who enjoy exploring their reward, I cannot see an entitlement to rewards other people like to work hard for. And the random rewards are not even staggering.
