This is a fair point when talking about world pve, it shouldn’t be really hard. I think greth is tuned properly for world events I would like all to be so hard.

But, when talking about explorable mode dungeons, the hardest thing in the game, it should be not just hard but very hard to beat. It should take 5 skilled players that are cooperating and thinking through tactics. This is just not how it is. Many explorable modes are done routinely by pugs where they just start boss fights with little to no talking. This would be fine for story mode but for explorable modes? There is nothing wrong with things for the not so skilled players, but why can’t there be hard stuff for the skilled players?

I agree, but I think it would be fair to give the game some time, GW1 didn´t start out with DoA (did it even have FoW and UW at start? cannot remember). Anet was never about make it as easy as possible for everyone, yes, the game isn´t perfect just now, but i think they really created a little diamond here and am willing to watch it grow.

It is to my great chagrin that I state: The World is Static

“Do you expect the devs to provide entirely new and fresh content on a weekly basis in every zone indefinitely?”

Yes.

“Devs” should be more like a Dungeon/Game Master. They should be “in the game” “controlling” things.

that would be the dream of any gamer, but is just that, a dream. Can you imagine how many people you´d have to hire for this? Or to watch them being fair the players. A computer game with 100 of thousands of players just cannot emulate tabletop p&p – unless you are a multibillionaire who wants to donate large amounts of money for this cause.

okay, I gave this some thought after I just was in yet another temple of Balthazar and temple of Grenth event. I do not intend to flame anyone here, but everyone who thinks the game is too easy: Please take a step back and ponder – maybe you are simply good at the game? At Balthazar, I saw 50 percent of the people being downed constantly because they didn´t bother to leave areas of incoming damage or analyze where the priest was going with his “slow” teleport. 30 % of the raisers died because they didn´t bother to watch the champion and priest closing in and breaking up raise to dodge. the event failed because people were not able to keep their dps on a single target. Then the usual Grenth experience – people plainly ignore the shadows or keep attacking them for 0 damage. Noone can expect a newbie there to know about the mechanic, but to stick to a strategy that obviously results in no damage without asking about it in chat…. All in all, I now think at least half of the players are still over their head in anything above victory by numbers (dragon events) or small groups of wolves on the normal pve map.

I think, in my opinion that GW2 has 2 major issues:

- Structure of the Personal Storyline
- Rewards after lvl 80

In GW1 we had Missions which required a 4-8 party to reach completion (either humans or henchmens, whatever). We had markers on the map which indicated in what Missions we performed well enough or completed secondary objectives to master it. In here we only follow each instance of story to it’s completion, alone OR in a party. No secondary objectives, nada!

Maybe ANet should create secondary objectives on it, or just create something alongside the Missions in GW1. Less time consuming and hard than dungeons, but that would require a party unlike the Personal Storyline. These Missions would include…maybe bits of lore!

Also, the only flaw I get from people that reached lvl 80 is the rewards. Seems like Orr is the only place that satisfies their needs on that regards. Maybe raising up the Exp and Gold gained in every area of the World Map so that people would have incentive to gather in other areas other than Orr.

the fun thing is that GW1 did not have any more “endgame” content than this game, the superhard domains weren´t there for quite a while after start, progression stopped rather early, and so on. If it would be released today people would complain about the exactly same things they do now +the game being insanely hard in DoA, FoW and UW – and where is my obisidian armor after 3 weeks of playing for kittenssake. Probably best to ignore game forums these days.

Are there any plans to improve the lfg tool.

We do not even need those fancy autogroup tools (which I do not like quite frankly), just some type of “message board”. DDO uses a rather nice social panel, you select a content you want to run and your lfg is advertised for all who open the panel, you apply to join to the party leader if interested. It has more functions like select/deselect classes, level range and the like, but we don´t really need this (well, perhaps the level range as not everyone cares to read up on dungeon level eg). We do not even need a preselection of content, a simple text line would be sufficient, like “lfg 3 people for COF story”. The advantage is that the ad is displayed continously and serverwide, no more areahopping and spamming that desperate lfg and lfm in zone chats.

they look pretty and all the chains leading up to them are fun, the additional stuff in the battles like the bone walls, lasers, corrupted ice barriers and what not are nice variations, but the enemy itself… they are soooo harmless in comparison with the rest of the monsterworld, you wonder why their throne isn´t claimed by the wolf veteran around the corner. The only dragon with even the slightest feeling of threat is Claw of Jormag mainly because that annyoing DoT ice breath. The rest of the map bosses are merely cardboard monsters that look threatening.

People need to stop being afraid of PvP. Yes, PvP isn’t designed with your victory in mind, but since when has that ever meant it’s not fun? Don’t you have fun playing a game of pickup basketball whether you win or lose? Why is that different for MMO PvP?

People approach MMO PvP like someone’s going to come and beat up their families just because they’ve entered a PvP zone. Why the fear?

The hilarious thing is, the same people have NO fear of dying repeatedly in dungeons. Why is dying repeatedly in PvP any worse?

I don’t have a fear. I just have lost the desire to do WvW. It is not that different then DAoC per my understanding. The challenge to strategise quickly and move even faster just doesn’t interest me.

well, you say you lost interest in all these things that are classified as achievements, so why do you think exactly the things you dislike should be taken out of the equation? Every aspect of the achievements will be disliked by some player, one may not like salvaging, one may not like POIs, so we take them out too? Achievements are an arbitrary assortment of requirements, you can decide if you want to fulfill them or not. What makes you think just because you do not like a single one of them exactly that aspect should be taken out?

So many issues could have been fixed before

an MMO is never completely done and I am pretty sure you know it. These “nanana, they said they only release it when it is ready”-threads are apparently the new fad in bashing the game. The game is playable and that is ready enough for me. Are there bugs? Heck yes. Does it have infinite content? Heck no, has any game? just check the WoW-thread that was linked here where you have EXACTLY the same complaints of people who rushed through the expansion in a few days. I am sure if you go this very minute to the forums of Secret World or any other recently released MMORPG, you will read the same things yet again. It gets tiresome but at least I understand now that the internetcrowd just is like that today and I am sure game developers are aware of this too, so my fear of them caving in to any disgruntled whim seems unreasonable at second glance.

I´d go even a step further and say get rid of the artificial division of pve/pvp mentality. It is the same game with the same UI, just different “monsters”. The only thing i dislike in pvp-settings are morons talking trash, insulting people etc. Just close the chat window if you feel like it, report insults and have fun.

Fair enough, but when enough people don’t find the activities in the game fun then they should change the style of the game if they want to keep their job.

That’s true, and if it comes to the point where there are more people like you and less like me, they should make the changes. My point is that a minority should not demand changes that will lessen the enjoyment of the majority.

The thing is, most people that leave a game don’t care to go to forums and voice why they’ve left. People aren’t sticking with GW2 like I thought they and I would have. http://beta.xfire.com/games/gw2

I’m not saying GW2 is a bad game or that it’s going to die. It’s just confusing and worrying that a lot of the community says “maybe this game isn’t for you”. A game should aim to be for everyone, and criticism should be taken into account no matter who the person is. Online games in the past didn’t have a “core audience” that they appealed to. They were just great games that most people could enjoy for years on end.

That said, I’m confident that this game will only get better, and to the point where there’s more content than I could hope for. I just feel like people who say that this is a perfect game in its current state are only disrespecting the professionals that work over at Anet.

you are right of cause, though pratically you cannot satisfy everyone. Anyway, what bugs me aren´t constructive posts like “maybe it would be a good idea to add this or change that” which are totally in the minority, but the whole “this game sucks in everything, wtf, it will fail, 10 people of my guild already left, change what I want or I will leave too, well, I already left, but still post here every 10 minutes how much you suck”. Also, this game is barely out a MONTH, let it develop a bit. I am far from saying everything is totally perfect, but this forum is really a cesspool of hatred against everything anet does, so excuse the people who enjoy the game despite its obvious shortcomings really getting fed up with all the bile from time to time.

“A lot of future income will (is supposed to) come from expansions. And when only a few people play the original game, not many will buy them.”

I doubt that, after years of MMORPG experience, I stopped believing most of the “I left the game weeks ago, will never touch it again, but still post” crowd and even more the “I will never return to a company xx game” people. Recent experiences: D3 “wtf, servers down, never going to play D3”, “wtf, Pandas, never going to touch WoW again”.

And thats why TOR still has a huge playerbase…
When people don’t have fun they will leave. And a lot of people don’t have fun with the GW2 “Endgame”.

or maybe TOR was just too much of a WoW copy so people found the original just was better with years of content on its back.

no, we neither need trinity nor yet another trinity thread.

There are roles in this game, in fact fluid roles any class can adapt to.
Teamwork is in the game and you see it a lot when it is needed – or the horrible results of the lack thereof. If you think trying to keep a dungeon boss off your downed mate while another player raises him is tactically inferior to a system of one guy standing still for 15 minutes while some dude hits his keybind for heal spell then well, have it your way. Support play is very effective in this game too, if you do not see this happen, I suggest you try to get into the better teams.
There is a problem with healing, mainly the lousy scaling of the healing stat. But that is not an issue with having no healer class.

they would be a fun long term motivation (yes, even months would be ok for me) with the mystic forge almost being a type of minigame if they were any better than exotic weapons imo. But as things are now: Certainly not investing that time of grind into pure cosmetics.

However, these threads appear all the time, there’s been countless threads about game difficulty, often having polar opposite opinions in them. My point was that it’s just swings and roundabouts. So if there’s a bunch of each, then the game is probably pretty well balanced…?

From all the posts I’ve read, the majority of them have been complaining about the encounters that were artificially difficult. Ie, either mobs have been spawning too quickly or that there are too many of them, or that the bosses either 1shot players or have a ridiculous amount of HP. These are the kinds of challenges that I am opposed to, they don’t appeal to any real strategy in most cases, rather just chaotic gameplay. You really don’t hear anything in the way of DEs being too difficult to complete.

It’s almost as if people were saying this nearly a month ago. At the time, those that said ANYTHING remotely negative about this game were told to go back to WoW. Most of us did.

I knew it was only a matter of time before people starting hitting 80, getting exotics and realizing they were done.

Like GW2’s bigger supporters will tell you, as they have told me weeks back " PvP is the endgame." And by Anet’s new post today, it seems thats really all they are focused on.

I’ve been one of those who’ve been knocking on these pipes since beta.

I also hear all the time those who continue to push PvP as being GW2’s exclusive endgame, and the only thing I can respond to that with is “Well then how come there’s so much PvE lore, if they were only going to ditch it at 80?”

Nah, not hitting it. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have a tremendous body of lore, as do the DoTA-clones and a million other pvp-games. Would you say the upbringing of Ryu is really a relevant part of the gameplay?

PvE is never really challenging in any MMO I know. The talk about great “tactics” is nonsense, it is always countering the limited forms of AI, which a rather an assortment of behavior routines. And yes, that also extends to GW1, the tactics in PvE was looking at the areas predominant enemies and combine your skills accordingly, in action it was just the same keys pressed in the same order over and over.

On the other hand, we had enough of complaints like dungeons too hard, cannot do champions with 3 people and the like. You just cannot find a level of difficulty that will satisfy everyone. I don´t consider PvE very challenging, but it feels like fun after years of hitting 1,1,2,3,4,4,1 and the like without having to watch anything on screen but my bars.

Does GW2 have the content to keep a large player base?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Algreg.3629

unfortuantly no.

as much as people say they hate ‘’carrots on a stick’’ dangling that infront of the player base really does keep them a reason to keep going, unfortuantly in GW2 its all self motivated, im not saying you need to be pointed to ‘’go there, do this’’ but for example the legtendary’s…stat wise are…underwhelming if you put THIS much effort into crafting something then you really need some what of a reward.

i like arenanet, there one of the few companies left that actually care, or atleast seem too though in my opinion they need to move away from NCsoft.

this is a really big issue imo. We have the grotesque situation with enough carrots in game, but none of them are tasty. Marketing messages aside, of cause there is a lot of grinding in the game allready – which is not necessarily a bad thing if it isn´t overtly mandatory – but the rewards for doing so are ridiculous. Starting with the Karma armor, plain silly: I had made enough money/gotten enough materials for a full customized set of armor and weapons (+enough to bring my alts all to high crafting levels) the time I had enough Karma for two Orr Karma pieces which aren´t even better, but possibly worse without the customization. Then we have legendary items: The elements of research, gambling and the dedication needed to craft at the mystic forge could be a really great incentive if it was really worthwhile. After I have aquired all “normal” gear I wanted, could I see myself bringing stuff to the mystic forge for months in hope to get an item that does not outshine my exotic level gear statwise? Hell. no! Would I do it if the legendary items were only 5 % better (which would seem like a reasonable improvement after putting that much effort into the gear)? You bet! Anet should really step back from the “we have no grind”-illusion, GW2 is not grind heavy now, but certainly there are things to be repeated. Dangling a real carrot will not necessarily change it.

Does GW2 have the content to keep a large player base?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

yes, the content is very big for a game at launch and the payment model makes it a go-to-game. I expect 10-15 percent of the original buyers to leave (or have left) by now, the superhardcore crowd whose days are really over in gaming industry – they will never again be happy with a new big MMO because the audience has grown a lot, mostly caused by WoWs success. Games are no longer designed for gamers who put all their spare time into their hobby, but average people who like to play. While you had endgame complaints (the issue is there, but this player type will burn through any content at an insane speed) in week ONE from that crowd, I suspect a huge percentage of the players haven´t even reached lvl 80 now. For them, GW2´s success will mainly depend on anet fixing those event bugs at last and adding new content – without the powercreep – at a reasonable pace.

What about asking the often silent majority?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

First of all, you don’t know whether you are the majority, unless you can back it up. Neither end can claim this.

Second of all, sorry, but if you don’t talk, then obviously noone will listen. If you don’t state your opinion, then obviously you can’t complain about why it wasn’t heard afterwards.

Oh, and if they are changing something, then, once again, obviously there was quite enough fuss about it. Especially when it comes to DR, something that I can’t understand why you find bad to loosen in the first place, especially since it shouldn’t be there to begin with.

If a change doesn’t affect you, then you might as well not QQ about it. If you weren’t hitting DR before the change, then you won’t be hitting it now either.

And ye, this is how human societies work. If you don’t speak, then you don’t exist as an opinion and are by default ok with what’s happening.

it is a well researched and accepted fact in communications and marketing that satisfied customers are very unlikely to voice their satisfaction compared to disgruntled customers voicing their dissatisfaction. If you do not believe this, buy some standard works on these subjects.

And no, just because you “exist as an opinion” is not enough reason to cave in to your demands, neither is it a proof your point of view is justified. Happy people do not speak up here BECAUSE they like the way things are (their silence is their statement), you demand of them they have to show up to tell how fine they are with the state of the game? No, polls are way better – in game, not in forums, as usually about 5 percent of a given playerbase partake in a forum, and make it mandatory (even if you can click "don´t care about topic x).

Complaining about lack of players...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Algreg.3629

People complain because it gives results….they complain complain complain until they change the game.
Ask Bioware on ME3…

People didn’t just complain about ME3. They started things borderline harassing developers and writers even on private level. Recently both of Bioware’s founders left. Insider informations say that they were both pretty exhausted especially over the ME3 issue and it’s insane backlash reflecting on everyone in the company.

Persistence is one thing but gamers usually do not know these days where to draw a line. Repeating the same complaint over and over does nothing but constructive criticism does.

That’s why I actually admire people like Ghostcrawler at Blizzard. He is tough as nails and doesn’t care about what people are calling him nor does he care much about the most of the inane complaints. I may not necessarily agree on every of his policies and the desaster that was Cata but he manned up to it and said it sucked.

This a hundred times over. I think the entitlement mentality, lack of basic human decency and viciousness on the internet have reached a point where companies and creators are advised not to enable public discussion of their creations and certainly not partake. Can you imagine what the Sistine Chapel would look like if there had been a Michelangelo-forum in these days? Or Shakespeare´s plays? The ME3 desaster really demonstrates how ridiculous the “democratiziation of the arts” has become allready. The endings where complete and reasonable within the context of the universe, if you liked them was really a matter of taste. Instead of accepting the creation for what it was they demanded a piece of art being changed. I cannot say I have ever seen the audience storm the stage because they thought Prospero´s decision was really “lame”. Probably it would be best if all game creators just closed their forums.

Not going to flame you I didn´t say everyone does and there are clearly shortcomings in the design that will lead to deserted areas and/or parts of the game. The majority of those “low player numbers, the game is dying”-posts are created by people who feel disappointed, angry, wronged etc. with or by the game and want to see it fail. A lot of them hate the game, even announce them leaving pompously, yet stick around to fill the forums with their all out-criticism and bile. I have yet to witness not being able to do something at any time of the day because I couldn´t get together a party.

One thing though becomes harder and harder: Dungeons in storymode. As there is no incentive at all in redoing them, it has become rather difficult for people “behind schedule” or just wanting to do them on their alts. Story mode dungeons certainly need some carrot or barely anyone will run them in a few weeks.

The problems with the Orr zones are also due to bugged events. Once an event is bugged in one of the major zone event chains, the whole zone becomes somewhat undesireable, sometimes for days. That would be a first priority to adjust the population.

But do not take my post as negative criticism of you OP in general. Though i play by its rules, I am not fond of MF either. It feels like a very artificial concept “cardboarded” over the game. Looting mechanics are always illogical to some degree as dead monsters would leave behind everything they own, including full bodies of scales instead of one meagre scale, but I do not see any reason to add up to the weirdness with magical luck boosting attributes.

@Lorrides: The progression part can be debated, but not having that trinity abomination anymore is NOT the same as removing roles and the term roleplaying is certainly older than WoW. in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

progression is part of the fun, but it has an inherent problem you just cannot solve. Either you make the end of the progession line unattainable which will put people off or the top of the scale is attainable which will cause progression players to lose interest once they achieved it. Progression players will always attain the maximum first and will always complain the loudest. Then you have to add new power related content, then adjust the game for balancing reason, then progression players reach the maximum again, then you add newer power related content… It is really a vicious cycle once you decide to go down the progression road.

Is GW2 as successful as you hoped?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

GW2 would have been #1 if it was more traditional. Too many radical changes with combat and roles. It sounded great theory, but in practice, it has been sub-par.

The elimination of Non-Trinity Roles gave us chaos in dungeons.
Target-of-target missing.
Enemy cast bars missing.
Missed skills/spells = Wasted Cooldowns.
Camera/Control mechanics sub-par and amateurish.
the list goes on.

You are listing WoW features and complaining the game doesn’t have them.

I never mentioned WoW. These are standard for more traditional MMOs.

the game does not promote chaos in dungeons – bad players do, just as in every “standard” mmo I ever played.

The mob mechanics target players randomly. What is random? Chaos. There are no threat mechanics that i know of (if anyone knows, please share). We cannot control the mobs threat. We can only “blind”, “root”, “stun”, etc. These are not control mechanics for threat, but control mechanics for movement and actions (such as skills).

It doesn’t matter if players are “dumb” or not. It only matters if they are “aware” of the next move from the boss and/or npcs. And with the exaggerated spell effects in game, it’s very hard to see what skill the boss/npc is going to do next.

then say you miss a reliable aggro control – which after 10 years of taunting/tanking stuff I am fed up with from the bottom of my heart – instead of calling it chaos. The monsters behave much more realistically in this game than in your standard MMO and I like it very much.

I think the combat in this game feels very stale.

but there is a point in laying out your concerns instead of insulting an imagined percentage of the player base per se. and if there is no point in those things you mentioned, why bother posting apart from feeling totally l337 ?

now that a few Orr events have been fixed, it feels a lot more enjoyable there – though I cannot see myself repeating those events over and over for next few months.

Probably my biggest dissapointment considering the skill creativity in GW1 was outstanding and I think should be the standard for any MMO nowadays.

But… but… noobs won’t understand a complicated skill system! What will they do?! Face it, this game wasn’t made for you or me, it was made for 8 year olds.

great, until now this was a rather mature discussion somewhat concerning the facts, congratulations to you, man.

Should GW2 have levels?

and what is different here? GW1 was an easy run to max level/max gear as is GW2 and the meat was pvp which is also in GW2. that has nothing to do with revisiting lower level areas.

I doubt any company cares about being a “wowkiller”. Companies care about profits and with the HUGE sales during the first month I am pretty sure they surpassed their break even point by far. About the players dropping after launch: Do you know any game that didn´t have that happen? a) There is a player type that simply burns through any content designed for months in days and leaves the game behind till the next expansion arrives b) people are on their fix for the first few weeks and then actually have to return to their normal living schedule.

Why are a lot of gamers unsociable?

Dumb people? Ie, people who play massively multi player games to solo aren’t that bright. There are tons of single player games out there.

so you think people who do not share your preferences are dumb? I would a) say that pretty much demonstrates why people do not want to group with strangers per se and b) I totally suggest you stick to that approach when you go to the office or wherever you work on monday. And make sure to tell everyone about it.

I think the combat in this game feels very stale.

Topics on this issue has been raised several times during the BWE’s, but were shot down by fanboys every time. Nice to see the general consensus changing. I hope ArenaNet does somehing to make the combat deeper. One of my personal favorite suggestions was having a skill tree for every weapon type, spending finite attribute points to unlock skills in a path that would fit the player’s playstyle.

please stop using this stupid word. The monicker “boy” is really flattering when you are closing in on your 4th decade, don´t get me wrong on that, but the “fan” part is just silly. Isn´t a fan just someone who enjoys something enough to stick with it? Aren´t you a fan of the game? Why are you playing it if you dislike it? Or are you just playing the forum game?

I’m sorry I got you all worked up. I agree that “fanboy” was probably not the best word choice in this situation. Maybe… “proponents of the current system”? I don’t know, I’m no good with words…

that is fine I am simply tired of people who defend something being termed “fanboy” (which really is a tautological fallacy, “oh, you like something because you like something”) – that is just as useless as people who voice their criticism being labeled “haters” or “go back to wow”-variants.

not really a stupid comment. Don´t get me wrong, I loved GW1 and played it for many years. But the very fact it is a ghost town and GW2 is not – despite all doom predictions from “professional complainers” – shows how obviously GW2 is the “right” game for this day and age. We GW1 old timers can lament that and compliment us on how we knew better what a great game is or we can just enjoy ourselves in GW2 which is also a great game.

Also, GW2 just came out… of course it’s not a ghost town. Guild Wars is 7 years old.

that is of cause true, but I wonder, is it really just the outdated visuals or GW2s marketing schtick of being new or don´t games really evolve. Even if one totally hates the new GW, one cannot deny it being different from anything in MMORPG history and even while it is casual friendly as in “jump into action immediately” it certainly isn´t casual in the play like moron-sense of the word.

Seriously, there is NO server deserted, the game is barely out a month!

But yes, I liked the district approach in GW1. I am no expert on server technology, is there any good reason for this fixed server approach GW2 took?

“The downranking system does make levels feel less rewarding, IMHO. Part of the appeal of gaining levels is feeling more powerful, but the system is kinda badly designed and a lot of people feel LESS powerful in a level 20 zone at level 80 than they did when they were ACTUALLY level 20.”

this is simply false unless you made a point not equipping any gear worthy of a lvl 80 character. And what would be the alternative? Having a lvl 80 steamroll lower level content for no reward at all, effectively deleting all content below SoF and Orr areas for maxed characters? certainly not.
