I can only judge it as a guild member and I have to say, the UI is horrible. I do not need an explanation “what is a guild” whenever I open the window and the research tab is full of confusing stuff like greyed boosts * X and the like. Yes, I could read up on those and yes, these things are probably not my business as a member anyway, but then there is no need to throw them at me.

What is the point of amassing virtual currency when – as you said yourself – you easily get enough gold to buy any items you need? Do people want to build a pool of gold to dive into (which, as Peter Griffin demonstrated, does not work).? The only reason for wanting large amounts of gold would be buying gems and I doubt anet will cut themselves from that source of income.

That’s exactly what they are doing controlling the gem to gold exchange!

- What’s wrong with a ranger calling their pet shadow? The truth is a shadow would do more damage to a moving target than a pet does at the moment!

Yes, I have a ranger with a jaguar pet named shadow!

I should say, namewise “Shadow” plays in the same league as certain scimitar dual-wielding copycats of a certain rather tan elf You gotta love GW2 though, I haven´t come across even one “XXX Dri…. XXX” in this game yet.

I liked GW1, like MMORPGs in general and need some new game from time to time, 40 bucks or whatever the normal version costs in dollars isn´t much money – bought. I do not regret it the least, as I imensely enjoy the game and didn´t expect it to completely rock my world – which apparently a lot of people expected from a computer game. The only downer for me was the release date because I just discovered Secret world and was eager to try it out.

@Shroom Mage: Yes, I didn´t think of that. Giving extra incentives for people who are usually not into it or even making it mandatory in the case of legendaries was a bad move that ruins the whole part of the game for “real crafters”. You can basically buy xp for crafting ingredients – if plumbing would make you charismatic, strong and sexy everyone would be plumbing in their spare time and even pay for it, ruining the market for professional plumbers (to throw in another analogy).

Unlike other games (including WoW), GW2 is one of the very rare MMORPG where crafting permits to create the best gear of the game (exotics). Just for that, crafting deserves at least 5/10.

I agree on the economy, it’s quite bad (and ruined by farmers and bots too), but the crafting is quite good in itself. Don’t blame crafting for the stupidity or greed of people on the auction house.

greed drives an economy. And what do you mean with “stupiditiy” – trading with your own ends in mind certainly isn´t? And, if anything, farmers and bots should make crafting more profitable, as they generate a surplus on ingredients.

By stupidity, I mean people selling items a couple of copper more than they would sell at any NPC merchant. I’ve only seen it happen to that bad extent in GW2 so far, even in WoW it never was so bad.

ah, I see. Well, there are two scenarios I guess:
a) not understanding the costs extracted by the TP and hence selling below vendor price => stupid, unless they have an immensely cunning great market scheme in mind:)
b) still selling for more than at vendor, even with TP fees => smart

In any case, an active market accomodates to that: low ingredient prices, greater profit on crafted items (yes, crafted items with a good profit actually do exist, it just needs some time to identify them). So withhold your ingredients till their market price rises again or check if there are any profitable goods you can craft with them.

you can earn money through crafting, but noone can do the brainwork for you, like checking for daily niches in the market. I make a fortune on low level wares, even with buying the ingredients from TP. And, as was allready mentioned, the market works, if a surplus on crafted items ruins the profit, you check your opportunities on the ingredients´ side. Again, all doable AND profitable, but you cannot expect to have loads of gold handed to you without investing a bit of time and wit.

GW2, misunderstood game

The problem is though that there are people who shrug, say, well, let´s look for another game I might enjoin more, and people who just cannot stand that a lot of people actually enjoy it. They turn this forum into a snakepit and will not be happy before anyone agrees how much this game sucks. But I took the liberty to look at a few forums of other games. WoW, Secret World, DDO, you name it, everywhere you have the same bile being spewed by the same personality type. I guess that is just the concomitant of the internet.

why do you feel t6 materials are too cheap? There is no “too cheap”, prices are adjusted by demand and supply. Of cause they do not cost a lot. people stay lvl 80 infinitely and gather high tier materials, people only level for a while and gather lower level materials. And no, they “should” not be as expensive as orichalcum, they should be as expensive as anyone is willing to pay for them.

If someone “poor” wants to make money, he should act smart and farm lower level areas. Problem solved. What happens when higher authorities meddle in markets can be observed in recent years. Also, why should we reward “poor” players, it is not like it needs higher education or special skills to make some money in the game. I got enough socialism in the country I live in, I do not really need it in GW2.

yes, but in all fairness, casual has adopted that meaning sadly.

Casual A: not spending endless hours of your life in front of the screen, plays when life allows and feels like it. Playskill can still range from absolutely abysmal to pro.
Casual B: does not read any info about the game, does not think about character builds, does not experiment with in game mechanics, reiterates the same mistakes over and over without trying to alter approach, then complains about difficulty.

Actually, I am thinking of myself as a fairly casual player (A) and am somewhat surprised by the notion that I should obviously fail at the story dungeons.

actually, Vzur, I think you are on to something, one big problem of the game (and many mmorpg in general) is a lack of randomness. GW2 wants to roll the scene with freshness, then why stick with fixed encounters and placements even outside of events? When you kill a monster, a short time later the exact monster spawns at its location. There is no reason why there shouldn´t be something like an old school “encounter roll”. Type x monster lives in type y habitat and can spawn there. And do not stop with the enemies, have resources spawn randomly after every server reset, not just orichalcum ore. Yes, that would lead to individual “unfair” situations probably, but would also really spice things up.

@Hellmood – yes, it sucks you cannot use the terrain as your weapon very well, but I think that is also due to AI limits. The monsters are actively chasing you even while climbing steps, trees and the like, but once they have to move around large objects to get to you, they reach their area of action limit. I don´t know if such restrictions are still needed today to reduce lag and what not, but understanding that makes it easier to avoid the dreaded “invulnerable!”.

Algreg: “we shouldn´t bring up Wow here as a comparison though. It is a totally different game, even with the common game tag “MMORPG”. I never played it (well, 2 days when a friend send me a trial invite), but a lot of games with a similiar mechanic. And let´s be honest, many of us MMORPG veterans are far inferior in action game play compared to the enthusiasts of different genres. Also, anet is really trying something new here, I am eager to see how it will develop.”

(my responce)
I’m not sure why you can suggest not to compare this game to easily the closest comparison you can make that most people would recognize WoW is the most successfull mmo to date. It main streamed mmo playing to the point its become part of pop culture. Your comman man who doesnt even play video games knows what it is. Also, most people playing gw2 played an mmo before, and most likely WoW was one of em.

Anyway, end point….dont tell people what they can and cant compare something to. Just because you dont eat Lemons, doesnt mean i cant compare the flavor of an orange to lemons instead of a banana.

Also, gw2 made a lot of changes to the way your typical mmo works “just like wow did”. They tried once again to solve issues people didnt like about present mmos with new features to make the game even MORE casual and main stream than WoW was to the mmo’s before it (like ultima or EQ for examp). Just like WoW though some things worked…some things were turn offs. Though in their case more things worked and they are now the standard most people go by for what an MMO is. If something that worked in it is not present in this one, people will notice and complain. Just like i was upset when WoW felt too easy and death didnt feel impactful it was like ez-mode, still the pvp was new and fun and more of my friends could get into it without feeling like they had to sign their life away. However gw2 leaves a lot of my friends feeling unsatisfied and bored. The lack of e-sport features, the lack of many guild activities outside of WvW, the grind and absent feeling of accomplishment for world bosses are all things a large population of people were let down on.

Do you have any anger issues? I didn´t tell people what to do, just bringing up a suggestion and pointing out some basic differences between the usual MMORPG and GW2 without attacking anyone. But I guess once people have gone into the “everything sucks”-mode, decency has to fly into the bin, right?

and to correct your quirky analogy, yes, you can compare the taste of those fruits, but you cannot compare categories of fruits that do not a apply to one of them, you cannot compare the peel of a banana to that of a strawberry as it has none.

actualy, after the rereading, you did not even understand what this thread is about, jumping into a discussion about combat mechanics of the game to vent your overall dissatisfaction. Yes, we get it, you do not like the game, can I haz your stuff?

dungeons in story mode are not hard. You say neither one of your team has MMORPG experience, but that hardly is an argument to lower the difficulty even further. What is more fun: winning even with 0 skill and game experience or improving your skills till you are able to overcome the challenge? If a game like GW2 would set the bar at 0 skill, there was no reason to play it at all – or at least I do not want a game where I autosucceed whatever I do.

Also, GW2 is not very MMORPGish, if you come from different, more action oriented gaming backgrounds, it should in fact be easier for you to adopt.

@LordByron: this is simply false, I did all dungeons I did without team speak (or a comparable tool), in PUGs and without reading up on them. And I see a lot of people doing likewise – with a job and approaching 40, so I do not stay at the game 10 hours a day.

I could agree that some improvements could be made to the game but what I can’t understand is how anyone can say that wows skill curve is higher than this? I left wow because it was way too easy lol, I could tank and have dinner at the same time and for dps all you do is just stand there and do a rotation. Played wow since beta and just recently left, I feel this game takes far more skill especially in the dungeons.. Could you imagine being grouped in a dungeon in gw2 with the scrubs in wow that are a dps class and want to pull everything and expect a tank to save them all the time? They wouldn’t last a second in the dungeons here and right away they would be saying this game needs tanks and heals..

I agree in part. yes some 5 man dungeons in wow where pretty easy. But some 5 mans and lots of raids had fun mechanics. I feel like GW2 dungeons have a huge lack of mechanics and environmental play most is just kite boss/adds and switch aggro if in trouble. Thats like 90% of the EM mode fights

ok I can agree that mechanics can be buffed up a bit but as far as the skill curve with the classes go gw2 hands down takes more skill than wow, you dont just stand there and do a boring rotation. I just know for a fact that those scrubs in wow, “you know what Im talking about” would be frustrated in the dungeons here because there is no tank or heals that going to save them from the dumb mistakes they make.

It doesn’t take much to say that, but GW1 also takes more skill than GW2. You can’t make a game for everyone but that is what ANET tried to do and a lot of players are getting burnt out and leaving, because the mechanics aren’t there, and the depth was sacrificed to make it easier for the casual gamer.

I am not convinced that is actually the reason – they build a new type of game from scratch and I expect a lot of experimentation to add depth in this environment.

Algreg.3629

IMO; the most dynamic system I’ve seen in play was in Tabula Rasa. AI would attack player outposts in attempts to take and control them. Players would take to the walls, the gates, etc to defend these places. If players failed, the AI would boot the players out of the area.
Players would lose access to rez points, merchants, and even mission hubs. AI population in the surrounding area would also increase till the outpost would be re-taken (although that seemed to not always be the case in all zones).
These outposts would remain in AI control until players united to eject the AI.

It was a bit like WvW; but a lot more interesting. How so? Imagine Orr and the outposts there. Now throw the Giants and wave after wave of AI veterans and champions at the players. So, it wasn’t just “balanced” players attacking and retreating; it was AI relentlessly attacking with the biggest and baddest the area could throw at the players.

This resulted in a much more dynamic ebb and flow to the zones. We never knew when the AI would attack as it was completely random. There were times we would take an outpost and within five minutes the AI would try to take it back. There were times the AI would attack, fail and then attack again instantly.

This simple ebb and flow gave the world just enough to make it feel like players were making a real difference. And in all honesty; When I first heard about Orr, I assumed something like this would be in play.

that sounds very interesting, why did the game fail though – no, seriously, I do not want to argue against you, I am just curious. Was it the weird rpg/fps hybridization or something within the system you described?
