It’s not that bad of a wall, especially if you pare it back by trimming some of the sub-quotes.

Actually, I wouldn’t even call it a wall once you trim the sub-quotes. More like some shrubbery.

- Absolutely kitten poor story-telling and purpose driven gameplay from questing. Hearts and events exemplify an astounding lack of depth to their purpose (questing). I’ve been engaged, more so, by large walls of text in more traditional MMOs (not WoW) outlining a quest objective and purpose than any of the PvE questing methods this game has to offer. In the end, it leaves a very mechanical feeling and personal story does very little to relieve this. We need something that brings us together in an MMO, not stories that divide us. Give us missions in each map that we can group up for, somewhat like dungeons..this would be a step in the right direction.

I don’t know why you would discount WoW in this regard; vanilla WoW had those walls of text, and while for the most part the story wasn’t thrust onto you, there was plenty of lore to entertain.

Granted, Blizzard took WoW in the totally opposite direction, so I guess I do know why you discount WoW; while it released with such potential in this regard, it was something that fell to the wayside when picked up by replacement developers.

For example… What if I wanted to tank as an elementalist? The low health pool coupled with the stats of light armor would not even compare to that of a warrior.
This suggests that the devs still want professions to play out in a particular way.
So in the end, you wouldn’t choose to tank but instead do what an elementalist does best… Cast spells and not the the focus of enemy attacks.

You can tank, but nowhere in this game is tanking as simplistic as WoW tanking became (I assume, based on where WoW tanking was headed last I played many years ago).

That said, are you trying to tank while leveling? Or are you trying to tank at level 80 with a specialized build?

Why no story behind those legendary.

You could make up a back story to your lengendary that fits around the character who is using it.

You know, be creative, use your imagination.

Oh yes… great solution, we should all just play boring games because making up our own story is much more creative.

But it is more creative.

It’s also lame.

Lore has been seemingly completely disregarded in GW2. Nothing new that has been added to it seems to make sense.
It’s like ’Here’s some new shiny stuff, have fun waving it around like a pompous kitten
Want some sort of explanation? Tough kitten.’

Legendaries, FotM, Lost Shores, even the Elder Dragons. They just ‘are’.

Pleasing the hordes of silly kids is what has become more important.

It’s quite an interesting shift in dynamics; dumb the game down for casuals, but at the same time remove the RP/lore factor which interested them in the first place.

No wonder all these AAA titles release to much fanfare, only to die off quickly. They’re literally being designed to be marketed to everyone, even though such an approach is incapable of producing a game everyone likes.

I’m sure she will, just not with keys, or at least not with keys until the gem exchange rate no longer allows getting keys through her cheaper than through the store.

Because some recipes enabled you to get keys for half the price of the gem store, which is not the way it was intended.

So when the keys went on sale at the BLTC, were the customers exploiting by acquiring them at a lower-than-MSRP?

Knowing Anet, probably.

Leveling was part of the game, not some necessary evil to get to the real game.

Indeed it was. Now developers make games where you level every time you sneeze.

And look at all the content they basically waste. They could have launched this game with a level cap of 20, and increased it an additional 20 every few months. It would have done them good to have more time to fix all that bugged content, and it would have forced them to develop a more diverse experience with far more mini-games and mini-game style content.

There are at least as many doomsayers than fanboys on these forums. Bashing the game without constructive feedback is allowed…but ultimately won’t motivate Anet to change anything.

Nonsense. Developers don’t respond to constructive criticism; that’s just someone telling them how to do their job. What they respond to are widespread complaints.

Read the rest of the thread… you get the achievement by finding them, even if you’ve already done them before

So the achievement is, “spend X gold waypointing and then running to each of these JPs?”

Should have been retroactive, but they also should have come up with something better (for the record, I actually like JPs).

wow 100 events, that is actually quite a lot. It’s the equivalent to 20 dailies. For those who don’t play every day, it could be difficult.

There are spots you can bang out 10 DEs in 30m, and now that dungeons count as events, you’re completing events left and right in practically any content you choose.

You could go kill 100 dolyaks, for example. You’d probably get involved in some serious small scale WvW while you’re at it.

Level cap raise - legendary level raise too?

Ansultares.1567

what is the point of adding in a new level cap if a chunk of players can just bypass the content and new gear chase? No, trust me ~ expect to re-acquire higher level gear.

Exactly.

~ don’t expect your legendary items to immediately get bumped up to level 90 etc, expect to use Fine Transmutation Stones.

Two things; first, we’ll probably need a new class of transmutation stones for the new max level (fine will probably cover up to level x9, whether that’s 89 or 99 or whatever); second, Ascended gear can’t be transmuted, so no, you won’t be able to transmute your existing legendary skin onto another weapon once they’ve lived up to their promise of buffing existing legendary weapons to Ascended quality.

Level cap raise - legendary level raise too?

Ansultares.1567

The rest (like “will the legendary’s level be raised, making it so I can no longer use it?”) is more difficult to answer because we don’t know.

But that’s exactly what we’ve been discussing.

“Will the legendary’s level be raised, making it so I can no longer use it?” No, because it won’t be grandfathered into the new level cap. There will be new legendary weapons to be crafted at the new level cap. They’ll be Ascended tier quality. No one is arguing that future new legendary weapons are suddenly going to revert to exotic tier quality.

What’s being discussed here is whether existing legendary weapons will be grandfathered into the new level cap, ie “making it so I can no longer use it.” The answer is no, existing legendary weapons will remain level 80 Ascended pieces, and short of some visionary at Anet recognizing the problem beforehand, you won’t even be able to transmute them onto level cap gear.

My best guess is that they’d keep the item’s level at 80 and just hike its power to compensate for the new equipment that comes out.

That’s not even possible with their itemization system.

if new item are introduced, then they get upgraded.

When Ascended tier is released, they will be upgraded to Ascended tier. That’s all that quoted statement attests to.

If the level cap is increased, all bets are off, and there’s little reason to think existing legendary weapons will be automatically upgraded to the new level cap, while there’s plenty of reason to think that they’ll simply be supplanted by new legendary weapons at the new level cap.

And ever since then, every single post you’ve made, you’ve been rooting around for technicalities like “they never said they’d increase the level”

They didn’t say they’d increase the level. They explicitly state that they’ll increase the quality to Ascended tier. Zero mention of level increases (no surprise that alot of players aren’t even aware that they’re planning on increasing the level cap in the future).

You claimed that they never said Legendaries will always be BiS. I have proven that they did say it.

No, you didn’t. You can continue to misinterpret what they said based on what you want to believe, but that’s not relevant to literally every single other GW2 player.

This link may help: http://www.englishforeveryone.org/Topics/Reading-Comprehension.htm

We can argue all day about whether or not they’ll actually keep to that promise.

The only promise is to increase their loot quality tier, but with enough pressure from forum posters you might get one of the devs to promise that they’ll also increase levels (and possibly cost them their job when Anet fails to keep it).

But we’ve already definitively proven that the promise was made. I will not humor further discussion about the “technicalities” of a promise that was made in no uncertain terms.

What is this, an attempt to troll the thread into being locked?

Level cap raise - legendary level raise too?

All of these questions are among the reasons why a post-launch level cap raise would be a terrible decision. The only games that I’ve ever seen pull that crap off without botching it had a later level cap increase planned from the beginning, and didn’t make the mistake of positioning anything at the launch cap as “endgame” material.

AFAIK they had planned for eventual level cap increases. It’s the Ascended gear which was hastily drawn up and released. I’m not sure what FotM was originally intended for, or how long it had been in development before Lost Shores; one would think it had been in development for awhile, but all the bugs and exploits suggest that maybe it was also hastily put together.

Interesting take, though. Do you have any examples of games which did and did not succeed at level cap increases?

So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items.

I don’t see where they promise legendary weapons will be BiS in perpetuity, only where they promise that legendary weapons will be upgraded to Ascended tier, so that they’re still BiS when Ascended tier weapons are released.

They’ll remain BiS relative to the upcoming Ascended tier. Zero mention of level cap increases, and zero reason to think they’ll be grandfathered into BiS with a level cap increase (and plenty of reason to think that they won’t be).

And, quite conveniently, the cost for remaining BiS when Ascended tier releases is the price of being unable to transmute the skins at a future date, because Ascended gear cannot be transmuted.

“Legendaries will always be BiS”, they said, in no uncertain terms.

You quote it yourself; they plainly state that legendary weapons will “remain” BiS, not that they’ll always be BiS, and within the context of the statement it’s clear that “remain” refers only to the release of Ascended tier weapons.

In case it wasn’t clear enough, here’s their statement; “…all existing Legendary weapons…will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game.”

That is what they’re describing when they say, “Thus Legendaries will remain ‘best-in-slot’ items.”

If they break that promise, regardless of how they do it, they should be held accountable for it.

Grow up; they broke their promise when they released Ascended in the first place. They obviously don’t care, and no one is holding them accountable. All we as players can do is rage on the forums, or move on to another game and write this one off as the joke that is is, however promising it may have started off being.

The fact that they promised Legendaries would always be top-tier gear is pretty much the only rationale in favor of the existing mega-grind necessary to obtain them….imagine how ugly these forums would get if all of the players who dedicated months of grinding to getting their Legendaries had all of that suddenly invalidated by an expansion or content patch. There would be no end to the forum riot.

Welcome to post-Lost Shores GW2; please check your disbelief at the door.

And please provide a quote where they explicitly state that they’ll maintain legendary weapons as BiS. The quote you’re thinking of came from the AMA reddit interview, AFAIK, and they only stated there that legendary weapons will remain in the highest tier.

We’ve already pointed out that there’s no correlation between loot tiers and levels. An item can be the highest tier of loot quality without being the highest level.

But, as I said, feel free to go fish up the quotes. I think you’ll be surprised.

Oh really?

What’s this then?

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

You’ll also see more Legendary items in the future and an update to our existing Legendary weapons. Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items. So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items.

Took me all of about five seconds to find this, btw, because I knew where to look. Would be nice if people just looked up this stuff for themselves, instead of making assumptions that the person posting these things is always lying. >_>

So yes, Legendary weapons have been promised by the devs to always be BiS.

Which means that a failure to increase their stats and level to match the best gear in any future content update would be a violation of that promise.

That only says they’ll upgrade current legendary weapons to Ascended tier when they release Ascended tier weapons. That says nothing about increasing their level when that time comes.

The only thing they have to do to maintain that statement as true is release future legendary weapons as Ascended tier, and not as exotic tier. Nowhere do they mention levels or level caps.

Working as intended – it pushes people toward the cash shop to buy gold.

They’d make more if they sold precursors for $10-15 apiece.

Of course, they can’t turn to directly selling items like that because of that foolish gold->gems conversion, leaving a lack of purely RMT-based currency.

So much for that vaunted economist they have on staff.

I think that is the million dollar question for MMos, how to make the game challenging without the grind. Honestly, I can’t answer that one because very single one I’ve played since 1997 has had grind in someway, shape or form.

I think a better approach is to find ways to make the grind less pronounced; GW2 is too heavily based on very obvious grinds, and none come to mind as being entertaining.

top tier is top tier, no matter the lvl

Yes.

But that’s like saying a level 70 exotic was top tier before Lost Shores released. Technically, it comes from the top tier of loot, but no, it’s not the top tier in terms of level.

There’s no inconsistency if they leave current legendary weapons as level 80 Ascended. It’s technically still “top tier” quality loot, it’s just no longer level cap loot, or BiS, or anything but an overpriced skin.

Probably not. Wouldn’t that make new gear useless and new content pointless?

Well that’s how you know new legendary pieces are going to require new materials; so that people with thousands of gold worth of stacked mats aren’t completing them within moments of the first new precursor drops being put on the TP.

Also interesting to note that we won’t be able to transmute them, because Ascended tier is not able to be transmuted.

I’m guessing they would probably introduce some sort of upgrade path to evolve your legendary into a current one

Possibly, but tbh I get the impression they think anyone completing a legendary absolutely loved the grind, and would leave the game without it, so if they even bother to include a method for upgrading level 80 legendary weapons, I would expect it to be as expensive as crafting a fresh level 90 legendary.

I’m not convinced they’ll even include such an option, but I suppose it’s possible.

The usual what is known for ages now:
Thief class, culling, nightcapping, lack of rewards, small maps, no variety, lack of ladders etc etc…..oh most important: the developer thinks we dont exist atall.

Nice run down, though it’s missing at least one other issue, that being the lack of visible enemy names.

I’d add that the matches are either too short to generate any sort of emotional investment in beating the enemy, or too long to facilitate more casual involvement.

I know alot of players who burned out taking a match seriously for however many days they could sustain, only to watch their gains lost within a fraction of the time they invested into achieving them. These players would be better served by shorter matches which they could have a greater impact upon, while at the same time matches short enough that they can happily miss a match without feeling like they’ve lost the war.

Suffice it to say, I knew alot of WvWers who found the 24hr matches far more fun than the 7d matches.

Unfortunately, they seem to be moving towards making matches permanent at some point. That worked well back in the DAoC days, but I haven’t seen it succeed since. Feel free to show me where it has.

I know that’s the first thing asked in a Dungeon PUG or standing around in LA. Forget time sink it’s always a gold sink. There is no prestige associated with it at this point, just a monetary value which actually devalues the Legendary because the concept failed to be sold.

That actually sounds like a fun activity; gently deriding people in-game who have completed a legendary. Only problem is that almost everyone I know who has completed one has quit the game, including some with the express intent of quitting the game as soon as they finish the legendary, while others were as close as three zone completions away and still quit before finishing it.

You know it’s cute how everyone says “make it skill-based” or “challenging” but no one provides specific ideas.

As far as I’ve seen, developers are never interested in specific ideas from the community, so it’s pointless to even discuss it. All they’ll respond to is a critical mass of sentiment, and even then you’re left hoping they makes the right decisions on their own (again, because they’ll totally ignore any suggestions players make).

You CAN refuse to waste your time on making one, and it will affect you and your game ZERO. I just wish others could get around to figuring that out.

I had no intention of working on one until they introduced Ascended, and it became obvious that it’s a waste of my time to focus on anything else in the game besides a legendary.

Legendary is not ment to be crafted by every Guild Wars 2 player. Its for the most dedicated ones. So why should areanet cares if it drives off customers, its just SINGLE weapon skin, ITS NOT WHOLE END GAME OF GUILD WARS 2.

Because players aren’t buying gems if they’re not playing the game.

I hate to break it to you, but GW2 is no Bentley, more like a Toyota, and it’s not worth paying thousands of dollars to add a hood ornament to your Toyota. Maybe $40, but certainly not thousands. But $40 can’t even buy you the precursor, let alone the whole legendary.

Off topic, but I ran across a guild (I think it was on Eredon Terrace) which allegedly included or was comprised of Nvidia employees (guild name was Team Nvidia, or something like that).

The FPS issues are more due to CPU issues from optimization. I don’t think drivers will help much.

This. MMOs hit the CPU hard. At least look into that before deciding it must be some sort of GPU issue.

For anyone with a quadcore, have you tried setting GW2 to run only on cores 1-3 (ie disable it from running on core 0)?

While nvidia has always had the rep of having better drivers than AMD, I feel that the roles are reversed now. I went from an 8800gt to a 7850, and where before gw2 would black screen and tf2 would error out a lot they both run flawless now.

You sure you hadn’t just fried the 8800gt? Also, 8800gt sounds like a rather old card, even if the x800s were the higher end of the series. 7850 sounds like a newer AMD, though admittedly I know little about AMD cards.

Actually, I think people just want questing/achievements to replace most of the grind. It’s currently almost entirely a gold grind funneled through the TP, and that’s just not fun gaming for most.

Stop killing zombies in orr and learn how to play the market. When the trading post isnt busy glitching, eating your money, or just being downright stone-age garbage to interface with (always) , you can make a ton of gold barely trying.

I doubt most people bought this game with the belief that they’d be expected to play the Day Trading Post mini-game. I can’t fault people who do enjoy playing the game that way, but I’m starting to think MMOs were better off without a trading post/auction hall feature.

You mean that’s not normal? This sounds like my drop rate since release. I think you were just lucky to ever experience a better drop rate.

When hit by a catapult, players are instantly downed(not just knocked down).
When hit by a trebuchet, players are killed instantly(no downed state).

So if you are hit by a Golem do you get kicked from the game?

A boot to the face?

MF does lower stats but even with lvl 80 exotic gear players still suck so it is not a matter of player wearing MF gear or not it is a matter of PLAYER’s skill and aid in dungeons or whatever

I’d agree here. I dont use MF, but I bet i could put out more DPS with full MF gear than noobie nooberson down the road can in full Exotic gear

while you’re at it, ill play along

ill take noobie nooberson wearing full appropriate exotics than noobie nooberson on full MF gear.

thats not how it works though.

What do you mean, that’s not how it works? When you’re pugging, that’s exactly how it works.

Legendaries: Why grinding is the only option

By removing quests in favour of Dynamic events, and by ditching the Trinity system entirely, Arenanet made it impossible for players gain better loot by any means other than grind. Think about it. Arenanet can’t give you, the player, a personal quest to assemble your Legendary. They can’t put in a drop from say, Lupicus, that then begins a quest that sends you to the depths of the Citadel of Flame to talk to a Flame Legion turncoat who will help you forge the mighty dagger Incinerator.
[/quote]Why can’t they? I don’t see why they can’t do any of this, or where you make a case supporting such a claim. Maybe I just missed it in that tower of text.

They can’t just add legendries to the drop table of bosses, because that would drastically cheapen them

Cheapen them? They’re expensive as kitten, so a cheaper price is more than welcome. But cheaper in terms of quality of achievement? I think your own words speak loudly enough (bolded for clarity).

The net result of this is that when you see a legendary weapon in GW2, your first thought isn’t “Wow, that player has really accomplished something major!”. It’s “Wow, that player grinded a hell of a lot. Wonder if they bought gold to get it?” You certainly don’t automatically respect that player’s abilities, the way you would be far more likely to if you saw a Paladin sporting Sulfuron, or a Warrior with Thunderfury.

I don’t know if you can cheapen it any further than “that guy must be a no-life grinder” or “that guy must have used RMT.”

Giganticus Lupicus is widely regarded as one of the most difficult bosses in the game, and he has been soloed. Try soloing your way through Molten Core in 2006.

That one boss was solo killed, but the guy didn’t get there by himself (afaik). Yes, there were similarly ridiculous examples in WoW raiding over the years; the one which most readily comes to mind was a pre-pre-nerf reckoning bomb paladin one-shotting a raid boss, but I know hunters would routinely be asked to kite raid level mobs as part of one encounter, and presumably could solo the mob given enough time.

Actually, I recall seeing a video of a hunter kiting a world boss across half of Kalimdor back to Orgrimmar. I’d put that on par with soloing Lupicus, given that it took longer with about as low a threshold for mistake.

But there are still bosses which cannot be soloed. Are you just jelly that you can’t solo lupicus?

Easier to just farm the gold and buy it from TP.

Which is absolutely terrible design.

Don’t try and bring actual facts into the equation, people are simply being entitled when they try and gather materials for hour and hours with no return.

Sometimes, I swear that’s how fanboys and developers feel.

Just sayin, there will be another round of decrease in price after major update, I am sure about that.

I fully expect to see another round of stimulus providing a short-term dip in the price of precursors, but with nothing actually done to address the underlying dynamics the problem will just return shortly thereafter.

Stimulus doesn’t really work, here or in the real world.

So a couple days prior to the event starting an Anet member told us that Lionguard Lyns would be available throughout the wintersday event. Was this a flat out lie or will Lyns finish restocking her goods before the event is over? Can we get an official response to this please as many had stockpiled commendations that currently have no use.

Actually, they trolled and said she’d be present for Wintersday, which she has been.

Ascended gear: Thinking ahead...(1-2 yrs)

Its understandable that we’ll get new gear, obviously. What Im saying is, will we all experience the same thing we did at 80? Get the level “90 exotics”, only to be slowly replaced by ascended gear or higher level infusions?

Yes, that’s exactly what they’ll do; “easily” accessible level cap exotics, and “fill the gap” Ascended pieces with 10+ times the cost of an exotic but using the same mats as legendary pieces so they don’t so much fill the gap as they move the goal further away.

SO, with all slots being ascended in one to two years time, and a major expansion in that general time frame(good timing?), they increase the level cap.. We get to the new level cap, for arguments sake 90, and farm the highest tier gear possible. For arguements sake, level 90 exotics. Do you think we will be slapped with an ascended gear climb again? What is the reasoning this time? Arenanet cannot throw the “bridge the gap” excuse at us again.

Since Ascended grind will already be in-game, they’ll just restart the treadmill. Level 90 Ascended will take as long to get then as level 80 Ascended takes currently. They won’t need to trot out the “bridge the gap” excuse again, nor will they need to say that should have been in before the game released. Actually, I doubt you’ll hear them reference “bridge the gap” again because it’s so absurdly false.

But yeah, expect the whole thing to just start over. You might even see another event to kick off the re-introduction of Ascended gear.

Drop rates really aren't good enough

The only things with high value are things which few people are able to efficiently obtain.

What value? For me, the only value in a legendary is what I put on it. I only decided several weeks ago to start pursuing a legendary (when it became obvious it was the most future-proofed gear). After a month of what most players would consider hardcore farming (but hardcores would consider almost casual farming), I started making estimates on how long it would take me to complete. The rate I came up with didn’t sound so unreasonable, until I started factoring in the inevitable reduction in my hours played.

Suddenly, a goal 2-3 months in the distance was looking closer to a year out, except by then we’ll probably see an expansion with a level cap increase, and who knows what changes will be made to legendary weapons (we know they’ll be grandfathered into ascended tier, but level 80 legendary weapons may not be grandfathered into the increased level cap).

I don’t necessarily mind such a long term goal, but to make even that deadline will require grinding only the most profitable content, and purchasing all the necessary mats off the TP.

The TP isn’t evil because people are playing it for their own personal gain; it’s evil because it whitewashes the entire experience by funneling everything through it.

DR slows down the economy, increasing the time people spend farming for ‘stuff’.
It does in no way stop botters more than players.

Well that’s where I agree with you, but has nothing to do with what I mentioned.

I just wanted to point out that not being able to sell my drops on the TP for as much as they once were going for isn’t necessarily a bad thing, if it means I can actually farm for needed mats myself, instead of being forced to grind the most profitable content and then buying those needed mats from the TP.

Basically, gold farm+TP is not a rewarding gaming experience, and does not inspire the description “legendary,” except perhaps in regards to the waste of time that it represents.
