Um, you keep saying that a trinity is what’s optimal or what’s most used. This is false. A trinity (When used in gaming conversations) is specifically the Tank/Heal/DPS setup that is necessary to succeed in other games. You can run 5DPS, 4DPS/anchor, 3DPS/anchor/support, or any wild party composition you want, and still finish content. There is no trinity because it isn’t required to have the tank/heal/dps elements to finish content. Emulating the trinity may be possible, but it isn’t mandatory.
You are correct in how I am using the term. I am not using it to indicate ‘mandatory’, simply optimal and most desired. GW2 does have a trinity in terms of what is most sought out and most used.
Except that’s not what a trinity means. In every other context, a trinity is used to refer to a mandatory setup. You can say that you “define it differently”, but then I could just say pink bunny tree grass and say that with my definitions, it’s a valid sentence.
I learned in my first philosophy class in college that it was fine to use a word differently, or even invent a word, as long as you gave it a definition. I am using the term trinity to mean actually having a trinity as opposed to a game that designs in and mandates a trinity.
My God that’s asinine. This isn’t freshmen philosophy, it’s a discussion, which means you use the definition of the term that’s actually correct.
Great! Please give me the correct definition and source.
Sylentir has been spelling it out slowly for you for a while now, read up. Source? Common sense from general gaming knowledge.
You must be new, to life and gaming.
You’re welcome.
So, you are saying you don’t have a source. Got it.
I get it, alright? You’re new to gaming, you said something that didn’t make sense, something anybody with any knowledge of MMOs knows, and it made you look like.. Exactly what you are.
There’s no shame in it, everybody started somewhere, you can’t be expected to know general terms that come with MMO gaming. You can stop trying to make it into a philosophical conversation.
Part of growing up means being able to admit when you’re wrong, you’ll learn that too some day.

@Colesy, could it possibly be because hundred blades comes back in a few seconds and can be repeated over and over, also coupled with swapping weapons during its down time to increase the overall damage from a player?
Not to mention that the kind of damage you’re listing from fiery rush comes from an enemy positioning.
You can’t simply say one is better than the other because you’re choosing to leave out all associated facts. The fact that one has a lengthy recast, requires positioning that’s not always available, and you’re unable to swap weapons to increase your dps via any other means.

As a long time tank, yes, I miss the pressure, it was incredibly fun compared to this all dps nonsense. However, that style looks like it’s going away from MMOs. Oh well, gotta adapt and try to have fun.
I’ll go a while without spending anything, then eventually need to get another 10 bucks of transmutation stones or something. Probably averages out to a standard monthly payment for a p2p MMO.
Awesome changes all around, since you’re looking a guardian meditations, my request would be to make merciful intervention ground targetable to make it viable.
Oh my god, so we can’t use it anyway..
Thought we would be able to use the lfg tool on tuesday but NOPE. We have to wait some more. Couldn’t you have had a beta before you announce its release? everyones hopes just got crushed. Bad advertising for your game, just saying.
Jesus Christ, are you a child? This isnt an insult, its an actual question. There are plenty of valid complaints about this game but this? They’re polishing one of the most requested features and you throw a tantrum because you’ll have to wait a bit longer?
Grow up and focus on real life for a while because you need some perspective, just saying.
Then dont do it, dont get Ascended Gear, and dont think you need it. Cause you dont. Most of my crafting is not very high.
So intelligent! So insightful! Yes! Simply don’t progress in the game! They added this for game progression, their entire “end game” is based on these items. The end game of a company that decided their slogan should be to play the way you want, but ignore that, simply don’t do it!
With this incredible way of thinking, perhaps we’ll never need to implement content again in a way that multiple types of players can access it. Just think of how easy that will make things.
Perhaps next time, the new items can come from Liadri style fights. I’d like that personally, I know I could beat the content. Who cares if a large portion of the player base most likely wouldn’t be able to, right? That’s fair eh?
Refusing to think sure makes things easy.
My point is, people are acting like you NEED these items to succeed in the game, but you dont. People are putting themself though more stress over it instead of enjoying the game and having fun. Having fun is more important than anything in this, a game. I enjoy this game alot more by not fretting over having the best possible gear with the best possible little stat for each thing. I seem to be doing fine enough. Maybe I die a couple more times than others, but its no huge loss.
I understand that. What you need to understand is, not everyone is like you. A lot of people don’t enjoy being sub par players. Many are competitive and wish to progress in the game, which is why this set of gear was put in by the way.
I don’t blame you for not being able to understand that. You’re just a player and by your own admission, not a very good one. I expect developers to know better. The same way they refuse to force PvE players to PvP, they shouldn’t force any player to craft.
One. Stop attacking me as a player. Its dumb. Second, my POINT is do what YOU want to do. Dont do what you dont want to. I do craft sometimes. But I get distracted by doing everything else. The person was complaining of HAVING to craft, but they dont HAVE to. Just like you dont have to attack me personally like you have been.
I don’t believe I’ve attacked you at all? I made an honest assessment of your skill as a player, based on the information you yourself provided. That’s neither here nor there though.
You don’t seem to be understanding, so I’m going to try one last time, to explain it to you.
1. Ascended is a tier of gear added to the game, specifically for progression of your character. This is not opinion, this is fact, from the mouth of the devs.
2. Currently, the only sure-fire way of obtaining an ascended of your choosing, aka, a weapon you would actually need/want, is via crafting.
3. Conclusion: this means, if players want to progress their characters, they are being forced into crafting.
Saying not to do so, is as asinine as saying not to play. The players want to play, they simply don’t want to be forced into a single type of gameplay, in order to progress.
My earlier comment stands. I stood and watched players endlessly fail to Liadri during the last living story. What if the next tier of gear required players to beat opponents of that quality to obtain them?
You know what you’d have? A back lash of complaints because there is a large part of the player base that wouldn’t be able or willing to do that in order to progress.
Or what if the components for the gear only dropped in WvW? Can you even imagine the river of tears that would erupt? The PvE players would riot at being forced into a type of gameplay, in order to progress.
Your argument is flawed. People want to progress. They shouldn’t be forced to perform the menial tasks of crafting, a game aspect many do not enjoy at all, to do so.

GW2 does not have any in-game voice chat like EQ2. You’ll need to use vent or ts.
Anet is afraid that players will gain ascended too quickly. To stop this, their only solution has been to time gate and force crafting. This is also what they’re doing for the new method of obtaining precursors.
They’re alienating a huge part of their player base that does not craft. It’s ridiculous. I haven’t crafted in a single MMO for over a decade, it’s not a game aspect I enjoy at all.
I’ve loved GW2. I enjoy the combat and different classes. I have 8 characters, 5 of which are 80. Sure, nothing is really a challenge, but it’s fun. Looks like crafting will be what defeats me in GW2, and why ill be moving to another MMO that doesn’t require crafting for progression.
@Xae, I’d be fine with some type of currency needed to make ascended tiers of weapons through this system. Perhaps something that has to be purchased via money/karma/one of our other 13 currencies.
Edit PS: thank you for contributing to the thread in a helpful manner. Even know you’re against my idea, I am glad you took the time to come up with an actual issue instead of foaming at the mouth and spewing asinine comments.
(edited by Araris.7839)
Sigh… Let me explain it again to you. You… Pay… The… Crafter… To… Make…the…item…you…want…., also, you… Still… Gather… All…required… Materials…yourself.
I can’t slow it down any more, so I hope you can understand that. It’s not asking for something for free, it’s paying for it with your own money, to the crafter. This gives crafting a purpose in the game, which people have been complaining about since launch.
It rewards them for their efforts by allowing them to gain money from their fellow players, to use the skill they took the time to level.
It also gives players another method of gaining ascended weapons besides crafting. You know, the way they gave them a means of attaining other ascended besides laurels or fractals?
Now.. Please read this post very carefully and stop trying to derail my thread into your rant on how an item should only come from 1 method primarily. Which goes against every system in the game.
@Fortus, what you may have missed during your rambling comments and half formed ideas, is that this thread is not a complaint, it’s a way for Anet to give crafters a place in the community, while also taking the obnoxious requirement of crafting out of the equation for people that do not enjoy it.
They have implemented several ways to attain gear so that multiple play styles can access the same items. This is the reason that people are upset. Because the current situation is an A or B problem.
A. Craft
B. RNG
Nobody is whining and complaining… Except possibly yourself. Nobody is saying that crafting is difficult, the very idea that it would be is laughable. They’re saying that the core principle of the game is to play how you want.
As to your other nonsensical comments, farming is dead? L2p bud, not only is farming not dead, it’s being developed and facilitated by Anet.
Hope that helps clear it up for you. Next time, take the time to actually read the OP, before making comments.
(edited by Araris.7839)
This is actually a great idea. Too bad they’ll probably never listen to your idea.
Well, you never know. They had to have been expecting backlash from this, so I’d hope at least some devs would be trolling the forums and they just might stumble across this and say… Oh yeah, I remember that system, sounds good.
Unlikely perhaps… But possible.
Although I don’t agree with the conspiracy theory part, the point that crafting for progression is bad rings true.
There is a very large portion of the player base that hates crafting. Although there is a “rare” chance for the weapons to drop, it’s a bit unreasonable to implement a system that allows only one type of gameplay to guarantee a weapon.
We have so many currencies, how is it that they can’t figure out a way for people to work towards ascended weapons via other sources?
crafting is a form of progression.
every other MMO out there has great icentives for lvling up crafting
WoW for example lets u craft gear that is the same tier as the current raid. and lets u sell to players.
its about time u had crafting so you can be self sufficant and start learning how mmos work.
Crafting is not progression, it’s a style of gameplay. A style that only a section of the player base in each MMO take part in.
You know nothing about MMOs.
Hello. I am one of those many players that has yet to craft in any MMO for over a decade now. It’s just not something I enjoy, at all. Now, I’m not going to go into a rant on the new system for ascended items, it’s bad, we all know its bad, even the devs who created it probably know it’s bad for a game where you can “play how you want.”
That said, I believe the solution can be found in an old system used back in EQ2. If you brought the materials, you could open a special window with a crafting friend, and using your materials, they could craft an item that would appear in your inventory.
I believe this is the ideal solution to the crafting progression problem. It still forces players to collect the materials, you just have to interact with the crafting community in order to get the item. Add a small box on the UI so that people can put cash in, that automatically transfers to the crafter upon item completion.
Crafter makes money for crafting, fighter gets the item, it’s win win.
TL:DR – Let us pay crafters to make the items for us, with our materials.
That’s it. Just go for the achievement, dodge roll towards the food when he throws it, you don’t even need to CC chomper.
I did it, and after telling my friend to do it (an Ele) they instantly won also. Yes.. You may get bad luck with a meat throw or something but it’ll work.
(edited by Araris.7839)
Agreed.. It’s pretty ridiculous.
I’m sorry… Really? This game is as casual as it can possibly be. I think Liadri may be the most difficult PvE element they’ve added and even that just takes a little practice, a little effort.
I had no idea people were complaining about personal story but having solo’d my personal story up until the final mission on several classes, I can safely say it’s doable for virtually any class. (Personally done it on Guardian, Warrior, elementalist, Mesmer, and thief.)
It may just be that you’re too casual… For even the casuals. There are a mere handful of challenging fights in this game.
Learn to play, the game was made for casual play, and apparently some can’t even manage that. It’s sad.
You obviously have no clue what casual means in gaming terms.
You appear to be confused, let me help.
A word can have multiple meanings, and in this case, it especially does. While the word casual in gaming terms began as a term to describe how much or how often a player played said game, it slowly became something else.
Over time, the term took on other meanings, lack of skill, desiring easy content, etc.
I simply used the latter since the OP was referring to game difficulty in several areas of his post, comparing the features of “hardcore” vs “casual”.
I hope that clears it up for you, feel free to message me if you need help with any other words.
WvW is a large part of the game, refusing to take part in it, at all, is your choice, and you’re not punished for it, but you’re not rewarded either.
But that’s just it, players who just want 100% world completion are not contributing. They don’t want to be in WvW at all. They are just taking up space in WvW.
Ah… But are they? Lets say a small squad spots them and gives chase, they run of course, the time they’re being chased, is time that that particular group or player isn’t taking a supply camp, or killing reinforcements trying to reach a keep.
Lets say they spot for fellow player trying to solo cap a supply camp and they help, and why not? It’s free exp and karma right? And they’re contributing.
The point is, whether they want to or not, whether they’re helping take a camp, defend a keep, or just fodder for the wolves, they’ll assist in some small way most likely.
And if they manage to avoid all that? Well, I promise you, there are plenty of other useless people in WvW, so no hard feelings.
Looks like the usual issue with snow and anything that provides light.
Yup
Every single player that refuses to participate in some portion of the game, at all, fails to gain some reward.
Want dungeon skins? Gotta do dungeons.
Want a legendary? Gotta visit the entire game, not just PvE zones.
Want the cool living story items? Gotta do living story content.
WvW is a large part of the game, refusing to take part in it, at all, is your choice, and you’re not punished for it, but you’re not rewarded either.
Before you say that not being able to attain 100% map completion is a punishment. No, that’s not something you’re entitled to, it’s something you earn, that’s why there’s a reward at the end.
Use another skin. I enjoy that it acts as a light source. There are actually several items with this, like the sylvari t3 cultural torch.
It’s not a bug, or something to be removed, it’s a preference.
I must have missed those zones. Odd. :P
No, my comment toward exploration and mob cc is because while it is casual, the constant hindrance from speed reduction/cc can frustrate players to the point where it ruins the ’’fun’’. I find that content personally pretty casual and yet I despise exploration due to those factors. Now put a casual in the same shoes having to deal with those.
I’m so sorry that the highest level zone in the game, considered the hardest open world zone, can be frustrating for them because of all those pesky risen hindering their progress.
Perhaps Hello Kitty Island would be a more appropriate MMO for them.
Before you get too aggressive with your ’’I’m so pro while you’re so casual’’ I already finished darkness achievement so your l2p comment is pointless, now that is sad! Also, who are you to judge who is casual and who isn’t? If I was a casual doing something like exploration, it would be annoying as heck because the mobs do their best to slow you down ,immobilize or simply CC. That’s the kind of proof that says the devs aren’t quite sure the direction they are going in
No, you’re not understanding. I’m not saying I’m pro, whether I’m incredible or have trouble tying my shoes has no relevance here. I’m saying that you obviously have no grasp of what “hardcore” is if you think the items you listed are “hardcore” and really? Now you bring up exploration and mob CC as a point of hardcore?
What you consider “hardcore” is obviously the inability to drool your way through content. Just because a game element requires a small amount of focus and tactic, does not mean it’s “hardcore”
My L2p comment wasn’t necessarily just for you, it’s for anybody with the audacity to say the game is hardcore because they can’t trim their toe nails while doing their personal story.
I’m sorry… Really? This game is as casual as it can possibly be. I think Liadri may be the most difficult PvE element they’ve added and even that just takes a little practice, a little effort.

8 characters. One of each race and class. 1300 hours played, started pre-launch.
80 Sylvari Guardian
80 Sylvari Mesmer
80 Sylvari Ranger
80 Human Warrior
80 Human Thief
80 Asura Elementalist
42 Charr Engineer
32 Norn Necromancer
I despise crafting in any MMO, so leveling the good ol’ fashioned way. I paired my least favorite races with my least favorite classes.. Which is why those 2 are still lowbies.
Each class plays so differently, it’s fun to try them all. I don’t quite understand you people with more than 1 of each class though.
Pet’s need the ability to evade when the master dodge rolls.
This again… no. Just no. IF pets ever get some form of evade or dodge mechanic, it should NOT be linked to our dodge. I can’t stand this idea that pops up a couple of times per month. It would be a worthless implementation, and it needs to be a lot better than that to be even remotely useful.
Keep the ideas flowing, but PLEASE don’t ask for a mechanic that forces us to dodge to save our pets – we need our dodges for ourselves.
I’ll never understand some people. You do understand that 99.99% of the time if you need your pet to dodge, you should be dodging also, right?
Perhaps you’d prefer an auto dodge for pets, while you keep all your endurance stored for dps?
Listen carefully, the devs are not going to implement something that gives without taking. This is by far the best option to all PvE pet damage issues.
Yes, one day you may need to dodge in order to save your pet while you’re standing in the back spamming range auto attacks, but that’s the price you’ll pay to keep the pet alive.
@Morrigan, no ganking or open world pvp. They’re saying duels. So, I send you a request to duel, you accept or decline. That’s it.
@wolfheart, they won’t say it out loud because that would mean admitting it, which also makes them uncomfortable.
Let me help explain it to some people here, the people opposed to dueling don’t want to look bad or like a coward when someone asks them to duel and they decline. That’s it, there’s no other real reason, simply put, they don’t want the feature implemented because it makes them uncomfortable.
+1 for dueling. It’s fun.
The pet controls in this game are the same controls that have been in effect for pet classes in a number of MMOs over the years. The difference is, our combat requires a different mechanic and thus the Pet should have been modified to suit the new system.
You keep on defending a broken system. Micro managing does work to an extent but it also severely limits certain types of gameplay in high dps scenarios, such as melee.
Your comment on mesmers shows me that you’re not logically thinking this out, the two things are completely different, beginning with the basic concept and recast times. As no other person would usually make that connection, I can only assume you’re attempting to troll and derail this thread.
Won’t be replying to you further. Enjoy.
This game utilizes the dodge/evade mechanic in all combat scenarios. Because our pet can not utilize this mechanic, they often become fodder for high damage abilitys, often killing them in a single hit.
Just a note for any new players to the game.
What a truly asinine statement. Obviously you don’t do high level fractals, or you’d know that protection doesn’t mean crap when the bosses can 1 shot. Trolls..

TL:DR
It should have been implemented at the start based on the basic mechanics of combat in this game, but I’d settle for it being a trait choice at this point..

Vit lets take you big hits and condition dmg
Toughness lets you shed light but rapid hits. Also once you hit lvl 40+ fractals, you start seeing lvl 83 mobs which quite frankly cannot be tanked.
Would Toughness not take those big hits…and make them smaller hits? As long as you have effective condition removal, condition damage really isn’t an issue either. Also…those big hits should be dodged or blocked anyhow.
However, perhaps you’re right, my group’s just been farming fractal 36 for a while now, I guess I’ll see post 40.
Oh boy..
Well, I don’t care about leaderboards personally, and as such, this change doesn’t effect me.
I will say…If I was someone who “competed” on the leaderboards, I’d be pretty kitten ed that people were above me for playing another game.
The HoM skins were reward enough for playing an entirely different game. This seems like overkill and people are rightfully angry.
Like I said though, doesn’t effect me, so sucks for you guys :P
My 2 copper~
L2P, I don’t think I’ve ever been taken down by a meteor storm lol. 1 dodge = safety. So difficult, how will we manage?
Actually, I’ve found that toughness is king personally. Our entire class is built on it. We have high sustained healing, which means all we need to do is slow down the damage that’s coming in to compliment that. Adding more HP makes no sense in that equation except if you’re taking massive condition damage. However, condition damage is mostly prevented due to the ability to shed conditions easily.
I’ve never understood why people think VIT means anything for a Guardian.
I personally don’t feel that you can truly know the feel of a class until post level 30. Getting that first elite and all your utility slots, not to mention a lot of the utility’s themselves have finally been unlocked to try out.
Edit: I say this as someone that has 8 characters as well. 5 level 80’s so far, the rest are 50, 42, and 34.
In each case I really felt I got a true feel for how the class played only post 30. In some cases, the play style of a class can completely change in the higher levels. Like level 60 with full arcane traits for a d/d ele. That was a ton of fun.
What’s odd is with Elder Scrolls, FFXIV, The Division, Destiny, and even possibly EQN coming to the PS4, I’d wonder if they’ve relaxed their policies on things like this, which would make it possible for GW2.
Oh well, pipe dreams atm.
Well, had been searching when I got frustrated and finally posted, but now I’ve finally found a quote from a dev on Gaming Blend.
So..due to restrictions with patches when dealing with Sony and Microsoft, GW2 won’t be coming to consoles.
Bah.
Did a search and didn’t see any topic related to this. I’m wondering if anybody has ever seen a dev quote referring to the topic of the game going multi-platform?
With more and more MMO’s being announced or at least hinting at coming out on the PS4, I’m wondering if GW2 will follow suit.
Would you play on the PS4?
Discuss
PS: Please don’t use the “I don’t want the CoD crowd in my MMO” bs; the secret is out…they’re already here. (No, I don’t play CoD)
I play Guardian because I’ve been a Paladin since EQ1 and this is a Paladin.
Edited for additional info: The reason to be a Paladin is to be in the middle of the battle, while taking care of your team via small heals/buffs. It’s just what I enjoy.
Alturistic… (buff others), healing (heals you).
Seems pretty easy to understand, its almost like a sentence. Be alturistic and gain healing!
