Playing against better players and a lot of perserverance to take a beating, reflect on your mistakes and get back out there.

Theorycrafting like felixdacat stated but without radically changing your general build with every unsuccessful situation. You may tweak a trait here, an utility there but overall finding a general build and sitcking to it. Execution takes a while to sink in and become muscle memory.

If a particular profession seems to be getting the best of you, leave at least one character slot open, running that troublesome profession for some time so you better understand how it works and more importantly how to counter it. If by any chance you fell in love with said profession during that recon… hey that’s part of the game too. Although if your intention is to poke holes on the profession that is giving you a hardtime, your mind will be set to improve your counterplay anyway.

Watch some other ppl playing and listen to advice from other players, but don’t follow it blindly, instead try to merge some ideas into your own playstyle. I’ve particulary been following Faux Sheaux, Xsoros and a few others to improve my own.

I’d say having a dev discussing it is pretty close for it to happen. At least it’s on their radar. Although it’s not even on the preview of next big patch, then again it it were closer to going live, the tone of the discussion would be different.

For that reason i still think it’s a pertinent thread, even if i did bloated it a little.

So if removing evade on 3rd really needs to happen for it to have a WW finisher, would it be balanced to have maul same cooldown (6sekittenraited), applying same vulnerability but added protection for say 3sec (you know there’s a bear animation so protect from the bear spirit)?

I don’t know i keep getting back to adding a defensive aspect to Maul being interesting…

Exchanging shorter cooldowns on bombs and vulnerability for condition removal on elixir usage looks good.

The elixir swap seems… situational, even though all around stronger i mean, no stunbreaker is like going out in the rain without an umbrella.

Now please, why medpack over Elixir H?

Ok that’s interesting… Why are elixirs unrelible?

Looking at U for example it guarentees quickness, the added effect might be a pain to deal with but the quickness will always be there i think. On the other hand its toolbelt is all random, from my experience you either get a Wall of Reflection or a Smoke Screen, even so the reflection of projectiles seems reliable, only unprectiable aspect is wheather you get a light or smoke field…

@ Nica please dial down the toxicity. We’re trying to have a dicussion here.

Come to think of it, leaving the chain as is and just adding on-demand evade on swoop, doesn’t sound imbalanced at all. I mean we already have a weapon set (sword/dagger) with 3 evades as is.

The idea to give it to Maul instead isn’t too shabby either, although an evade seems… unfit (I mean with the bear animation and the overall feel of the skill not being acrobatic, does that make sense?), which could’ve been worked around with a sec of distortion or block.

That actually sounds fun, making Maul an ability that isn’t just pressed for the damage and vulnerability. With the added defensive aspect, it would add another layer of tactical usage. “Should i use it now or is he gonna throw a something nasty, should i save it a couple more seconds?”. That duality in my head sounds fun!

Ok, then we’re playing different games, other than that i don’t know what else to say.

I won’t argue that that’s not what you perceive the profession to be. I’m sure you believe it with all of your conviction. Although like dozens of other threads like this in which i have given my happy two cents about it, i truly feel very much in love with most aspects of my ranger gameplay.

Dungeon running? Dude no adept of min/maxing can trully be efficient without Frost Spirit and Spotter. Why don’t you look at that? Something unique only the profession you relentelessly thow in the gutter can bring.

About PVP? Oh please, i’ll use a quote out of context to answear you: “I would look up on various Ranger threads and see that ppl dont have any problems.” I know it’s not polite to quote mine, but i just couldn’t pass on the oportunity. Although at least one single thing we can agree: Thieves are a pain. Although i’m sure some other rangers out there would read this and go: “nah man, i mop the floor with thieves”. Because unlike you, i’ll be the first to admit that there’s much for me to learn.

Not a math guy but i’ve seen ppl doing the math and stating that the nerf to the vigor trait represents about 3 sec longer between total number of evades… All that grief for.. 3seconds? But i’ll make you even more mad, that trait is not too much of a corner stone for me, i’ll grab if there’s other stuff i need in the Wilderness Survival trait line, so there you go: a detail.

Pets? Oh man… They were the reason i picked ranger to start (with a little help of having played ranger in GW). I love hybrids and jack-of-all-trades characters, pets are amazing, although making them work took some effort and headbanging… for the first couple of months…

I love the decision making, i love to look at my trait lines and see that i can’t catch’em all, i really need to make cuts and give up or take key traits to make my builds worthwhile and the constant “what if i took the other one” feeling is adictive and is what keeps me going.

There’s a sentence from some dude i can’t name that states: “The secret of being happy is not having everything that you want”. Somehow you take this core human “hunger” and turn it into misery and grief.

To end this whole mess of a meaningless thread:
Thank you Anet for all to work and effort you put in this game. Thank you for re-igniting my MMORPG spark into a whole new level. Thank you for the countless hours you’ve given me even though my wife hates your guts for giving me this reason to strap myself into a chair almost daily.
Enough with the Scarlet business, work in-game systems to break the zerg meta and give us more than control points in SPVP so i can file my divorce

It’s not the profession, it’s you. Me and many people have a blast with the Ranger. Is it perfect? hell no, thankfully no! That’s why even after a year of playing, ideas keep boucing in my head, i keep trying new stuff, trying to master some other stuff but in the end it’s just a blast.

I just don’t know the gain in posting something like that, then again don’t know what i get from responding to such a clearly toxic whinney post.

Still if it brings you any peace or calming all that frustration, answear is ranger is not for you, i’m sure there’s plenty to be achieved with your beloved warrior and/thief?

Come to think of it… you’re probably trolling, but considering the effort of spending all characters in the post window, thought i’d drop a line.

Hi there

Daydreaming about the engineer again. Mine is only 36 atm with a FT/EG build for lvling in dungeons and WvW.

Although my mind drifts to something like this to use mainly on dungeons/fractls with a side of WvW:

Seems ok in paper although:
Main purpose of the build is to dish out on par (or close enough not to drag down) damage while providing amazing support from the healing on bombs and boons/reflect from elixirs

Am i missing much for not going into Firearms and its stats, considering the armor is full zerk?

Does the trait points + runes make the healing from bombs meaningfull for the frontline?

What about the elixirs?

Do i need to charge up the sigil with rifle kills or does it trigger by simply having it equipped?

Thought there was a place to dicuss the idea of removing the Evade from Powerstab (Greatsword 3rd ability from #1 chain) and move it to swoop. The idea as state is to give Rangers a more controlled and reactive on-demand dodge. This is a change very likely to go live.

Well, i think this change would give a “usability overload”. Don’t worry, i don’t know what it means either since i’ve just invented it. My point is, gap closer, leap finisher, all into one would limit my usage in a way.

As it is, i have a choice in spending my gap closer to trigger a combo field, or ignore that field for now because the mobility will be priceless shortly. Add-in the Evade factor and now i’m seeing a tri-factor of regret as in using swoop for one purpose will have me lament losing access to its other two important aspects of the same skill.

TLDR: A combo finisher, gap closer and evade are three too much important moves to be combined into a single ability. Leads to more frustration in a sense of loss, instead of fun decision making gameplay.

I never thought of it that way, but i guess DS works kind of like another weapon set… always view it as a way of increasing survivability (after pvping against necros).

Hi there,

Long time Ranger player, Necro always kept a sweet spot in my liking.

Concerning though about the Necro in melee range, i’ve read dagger MH is pretty much the only viable melee weapon, although that 600 range on axe seems weird… if you know where i’m getting at?
How does the Necro fairs in melee?
How’s it survivability concerning dungeons?
As a side note, does the necro offer anything in terms of support in a party?

Melee Staff comes first. Not even to cast magical stuff, just a straight martial package bundle with some utility. Come to think of it, that deserves a thread of its own, problem is: plenty have been opened i believe.

First thing about a build is the purpose of it. In what gametype, scenario and function it should have. Since nothing is stated, here’s a tip on a build i used to run:

It relies on steady focus, hunter tactics and peak strength to add up a handsome amount of damage. I left the last 10 points up to you since it is a really tough call between 10 points in Nature to grab the 70% proc in spirits or you go +10 in beastmaster and grab spotter. Advantage for the latter since you’d also get eagle eye choice for the sweet range on longbow, again it depends on the purpose and circumstance.

edit; forgot to add my choice in utility skills, pets it’s really up to you, they are the icing on the cake, although Feline or Bird along with Drake or Devour are encouraged duos for this build, one sturdier and another more dpser.

This i can agree completely. Having to pick up the item that the boar salvaged with forage, makes little sense and a pain to pull off mid-combat. I can see it being able to be used by another character nearby but…. can you see another character expecting a forage activation so he/she can use the item it procs…

Following Guard with a instant F1/F3, depending on the situation, helps a lot, even though it breaks the pet effect, but since you’re using it for the r
egen+swift, still evens the tradeoff. Also keybinding those commands to more accessible keys helps.

Your protect me idea sounds ok and here’s a suggestion for further optimization: run the 20% shout reduction thus making your pet and regen a bit stronger grab the 33% increase in regen and add sic’em. That way you bring that much burst and another source of regen. That way your regen would be close to permanent. You’d be changing guard to two other shouts that can directly help you more both defensively (added stunbreaker) and offensively (burst from the pet).

There’s a new build posted on the sticky 4 days ago. I just seen a jaw dropping video about rangers potential less than a week ago and you sound like everything about the ranger is done and discovered.
Well i feel sorry for you mate, as i’m still having a blast and still perfecting and tweaking stuff daily.

I can’t seem to erase the picture an old grumpy person complaining about the government…

Yes, but i fail. to see the point where more or less people using it would affect my enjoyment with the weapon.

Yes. I believe they are buffing the 1st and 2nd distance treshold, i guess that will penalize less ppl shooting below the 900 range mark. On the other hand, can’t seem to understand why can’t i do barrage while moving.

You get Signet of the beastmarter and signet of renewal clears your conditions regardless of your pet status.
With 6 superior runes of the soldier, you remove a condition everytime you shout. I know this one kind of relates to the pet, but then again, it works regardless of pet status

Well regardless of what the game means to one person in specific this shouldn’t be. Systems should be in place to prevent this. Meanwhile browse the web or pay attention to map chat so you can find a guild where you can run arah and feel safe.

Melee vs ranged ! Soldier vs Adventurer (PVE)

I play a sick minigame of wanting to melee most if not all of the content… with pugs!

Currently fractals (lvl22) is where it’s at. Problem is i end up going ranged most of it after being down a few times so ppl don’t kick me for being a total scrub. I’ve even gone 6xRunes of Vampirism on my zerk set to serve as training wheels, but that bonus 6 never triggers unless i’m 1v1 against a mob to test it.

I find it hard to notice some telegraphs because there’s so much particule effects around…

Anyway i digress. I’m devoted to a Ranger atm but my lvl80 Guardian is benched till he gets a shot… guess what my second spare ring just dropped…

What you thing does it make a difference one profession over the other? Bear in mind i dislike both Staff and Scepter (will use it where absolutely have to) so Guardian would be a complete All-in as melee, or should i just improve on the basic survivability of the game while profession being secondary/mere flavour?

Hi,
I just got to lvl22 but one thing is bugging me: i only have 15 AR and no accessible way of getting more soon.

On the other hand i just got my second ascended ring from the random drop (this time at least it’s infused) but the overall stats are not interesting, besides i already have rings for the longest time (i know, made a mistake with the laurels, should’ve gone for the trinkets if only i knew i’d be having these many surplus of rings).

Now, besides these 2 rings sitting at the bank (i have very little interest in going all the way up again on an alt) i also have already 11 Pristine Fractal Relics for yet another ring.

On to the real frustrating part: if at least i wanted to infused my current rings for the extra 10 AR, i only have 3 vials of condensed mists essence and 1 single glob of coagulated mists essence.

Sure i can aim to get the 40 laurel +50 ecto acessories and eventually get more essence drops, but i’m sort of a casual, my schedule doesn’t allow me a consistent gameplay time to hit all dailies, sadly but true – sometimes i struggle to complete the monthly… So the laurel road may be lenghtier than it may seem…

Any shortcut route for me? You can see the frustration of having good enough drops for an alt, but not for my main character.

Not really. Besides i gave it a whril in pve dungeon only, plus with all the boons around, but eventually my current build stepped away from that trait. Guess it’s worth a shot even in its current form, disregard my comment then.

Quick disclaimer: the thread got to a point where it’s hard to go through the entire thread and check if this has been addressed.

Beastmaster bond i honestly don’t feel the reduction on the cooldown is enough. It still feels like an ability one can’t rely and manage in a practical sense. I mean if the cooldown was let’s say 20sec i would be able to tactically aim to trigger it on every pet swap, whereas on a 60sec cd i will eventually forget about that and just consider it to be a buff that “happens” as a still nice colateral buff, don’t know if i’m making my point clear.

Obviously asking to cut a cooldown to a third, sounds too radical and too much powerful so we could reduce its duration accordingly but at least it would be on a time frame that we could juggle in pratical terms and be rewarding for those able to track their pet’s management in order to make the most out of this trait, does that make sense?

What poses as worthless to me is the general concensus established that the forums serve as a place where i can ask the company that created the game you play to change the very rules of it’s mechanics to best suit your bloated egotistic style of play. When instead you could be adressing the community to help in findings ways to overcome the difficulties that the game provides you. While tomorrow you could be offering your own ideas to overcome their personal adversities. This give and take is what communities are all about.

Taking further on that printer analogy: you are constantly filing reports to microsoft constantly demanding they fix the problem your specific printer is having with your specific pc setup. I’m the kind of bloke reaching Out for the community, trying to find others with similiar issue, installing different drivers and software other cables and connections.

But if you wish to label this workarounds while you keep your arms crossed, wainting for a fix while you keep dusting your demands to the wind suit yourself. Trust me it’s much more rewarding to be in this side of the fence and i’d be glad you joined us, since i’m sure you have something to offer the community if only you channel your energies in something within your reach and control.

With that… er… “problem” i’m able to glue to my enemies with constant cripple and leap leaving them with slim chances for kiting.

Both #2 #3 ability allows you to escape add in a dagger and that’s a third ability,

any other ability with a cast time interrupts the chain so you can dodge without even spending the ability,

then you have lightning reflexes for a quick get away,

you can also turn the camera over 90degree angle and slightly tap a movement key to drop your target thus interrupting the chain,

you’ve also read about the autoattack off trick…

After all of this plus over a year of release, how much more time do you need to truly realize where the problem really lies.

snake trap some ppl claim it’s limited to 3 targets cap, regardless of the usual 5 target cap for AoE’s, in a related note:

barrage is an easier skill to spot its effect and i can swear it doesn’t have a limit, i’m pretty sure i can cripple a swarm of enemies (and rightfully so, it feels great to slow down a mass of enemies). Therefor i bet this is working as intended.
Although could you elaborate on these AoE variations on target cap and clarify so we better make use of such abilities?
