Ran with Search and Rescue yesterday on the imbued shaman fight and felt glad i brought hit, got two successful uses out of it during that fight.
Any other players out there with a sweet spot for this ability?
In what other situations do you find it usefull?
In order for it not to be a bust, i usually reatreat the pet to me so it doesn’t miss the revive, any tips on how to get the most use out of it?
Well i’d argue that the virtues are simply 3 more “signet-like” abilities that a Guardian has, out of all the classes, Rangers followed by a distant second Necro, are the absolute most creative class mechanics in the game. The honorable mention goes to Elementalists that are nothing more than different “pages” of skills and the engineer being granted simply extra buttons to push.
Bottom line, a Mechanic, like trully in the sense of the word as in an integrated system that relies on the correlaction of cause and effect to spawn different options and functions, Ranger’s win hands down.
In what concerns the so-called “F2 sickness after swap”, meaning the pet’s active ability going on a short cooldown without being used, after a pet swap, i was able to get a decent improvement by adding a command in between the swap and F2:
So it goes like this:
F4 for the swap,
F1 a split second after / or F3 if the pet i’m choosing to has a buff on its F2 (stalker, moa, fernhound, bear),
F2 imediatly after.
I found that by issuing an attack or retreat command between the swap and the active ability greatly improves the F2 responsiveness.
Try it and let me know some feedback.
Still those guildies seamed to know what they were doing, i’ll give in more attempts with my guardian in knights.
After 1 and a half year the “remove the pet because i can’t handle it” posts? I can only understand if this cry is made my a continuos influx of new players. Other than that i can conclude people love to hate.
I can not articulate in any more ways, my english is limited, me and countless other ranger manage the pet just fine and don’t get that much frustrated with it, well maybe at first like two weeks i started playing the game and trust me i’m no special cookie and certantly not hardcore. The main reason i dwell in these forum it’s because don’t have the time to play longer.
Although if by this time (heck give it, i dunno, 100hours of playing ranger) you still see “the issues” And start deluting yourself with nonsense like: “Anet doesn’t like rangers, they want rangers to suffer”.
It’s you! YOU! The “fix” is for you!
Hell mate, i’ll share something to level with you: my mesmer is at lvl 50ish not going anywhere. I tryed a lot, builds, weapons you name it! I don’t know what it is but i can’t make it work. Portal blink, reflections, boon control, phantasms and clones all very appealing to me, but i just… keep dying, lose track of my ilusions, have a hard time getting 3 ilusions up even with an utility bar devoted to creating ilusions… read some guides posted some questions, but still wasn’t happy with my evolution so what did i do?
Adress the devs to change the mechanics of a profession to suit my gameplay? Hell no! Went straight back to my ranger, now i have a guardiant at 80, cool i manage. Then a Engie at 40ish and Ele at 20ish still deciding which but both make sense to me, not the mesmer though.
Now take the frickin’ hint! Most important and above all leave ranger the F! alone!
Edit: oh and for the… 5th? Time, add my name, i play EU let’s do whatever you want and i’ll show you how to manage a pet.
SPOILERK: the other 4 times nobody called my dare, i wonder why?… love to hate am i right?

I use spirits regularly. Every now and then i take a build heavy into Nature Magic. Not even then i take spirits unbound. Heck, apart from the cookie-cutter Spirit build i never found that trait appealing and even that one didn’t have much mileage with me…
See i tend to lean more to melee and even with Spiritual Knowledge trait, spirits don’t withstand much punishment in the fray of combat so being immoble is a plus. After much error eventually i got around picking them spots safe for spirits.
You should try a combo i pull all the time with a sword:
Cast spirit dive in and deliver the pain, during the fight i see the spirit cooldown about to run out i save up
Hornet sting,
Cast spirit away from the melee danger zone,
Use Monarch leap after the spirit is in safe spot.
So please don’t take this sort of tricks away from me.-
Funny you mentioned the ranger extraordinaire Robert Hrouda himself, but that’s the thing, since he left the company no really sounding voice has emerged in the dungeoning side of things.
The idea is not for Greg to fill in his shoes. Hrouda’s legacy lives on and it can be enjoyed whenever one step into the instance part of the game, instead a new era could emerge, giving gw2 that much of an edge, without really changing the course of the game’s direction. What i mean is maybe another game mode, in a sense as we can consider for example fractals and dungeons being two distintict game modes. Maybe, who knows i’m just spit balling here, a cross section between mechanics we can see in wow raids with how active gw2’s combat is…
I don’t know these are the sort of designers that can push the boundaries of what we perceive to be the mmo experience.
The following post is entirely speculative and has absolutely no grounds or any rumors to withstand itself.
That said, have you guys heard about the Lead Systems Design Greg Street leaving the giant Blizzard? I stopped playing WOW pretty much the day i saw the manifesto video prior to the release of Guild Wars 2 and haven’t been disappointed since. Only stuff i kind of miss about WOW is the Auction House balance (most of the time crafted stuff was more expensive than the mats it took to craft them at least) and a little bit of tanking (in the old trinity sense).
This post is being made on this section because obviously the point is to focus on the second part of my nostalgia. So what do you think? Do you believe that if Anet/NCsoft was to hire such an influent personality from the competition would be a blow that really bumps Guild Wars 2 to a higher degree? I can see it being offered the formerly known Ghostcrawler, to direct a division at Anet and hopefully rely on his expertise in sailing the dungeon part of GW2 to a higher degree?
Don’t mean to offend anyone currently at Anet, as i am one of the biggest fans of your entire work, just check my post history, i’m like one of the most bias people around, since you can’t imagine how the vision of this game pretty much filled all the complaints i used to have about MMO’s, that manifesto… gave the chills as i started to salivate imediatly.
Either way, keep up the astonishing work, thank you for guild wars 2.
+1 for spirit appreciation, the exception being Storm Spirits’ passive.
Hi there,
This portraits a very specific situation, although hopefully understanding this would open up other practical uses.
On the Unstable Fractal (the one where you fight a handful of golems at the end). One of the encounters put you against a Fire Shaman, an Ettin and the ocasíonal rabbit/robber.
I was running with a 4 man guild run who probably had to pick up the 5th – me. They seemed well organized, above pug degree for sure, and in that particular fight they had their Guardian fend off the Ettin to a side, while the others melted the shaman. I noticed this, proceeded to burn down the Shaman with the other 3 and would ocasionally throw CC and heals (me as a ranger) not because the Guardian was in trouble, but more in a way of telling “i see what you’re doing, great job! Here are some skills that my current weapon set has, not needed for the dps meltdown plus my healing spring as a token of my apreciation.”
Lately in pug, i keep trying to fill in the same diversion technique of holding the same Ettin… what a monumental series of fail. The Ettin would simply ignore me, kept running around the area and if anyone of those pugs i was with noticed my gameplay, that player surely thought i had parkinson syndrome.
So what am i missing? What was that guy doing that simply allowed him to keep the Ettin “on a leash”? Only thing i recall from said guardian, was that he was using staff on his set, but that means nothing, since has i have noticed not even line of warding seems to work on the Ettin…
Any help would be welcomed. Maybe throw in other situation where mob control is key and specially how to pull it off.
Read forum stickies.
I read someone saying it would apply the “draw” radius to your character aswell, i still haven’t found that to me the case.
Shameless bump. I can’t be the only one thinking this is a priority
Well… you could make the same case about rares.
The thing is that the average joe and/or new players won’t be having resources to craft all ascended. Besides even an elite player with a full ascended set may think it’s a waste to go full ascended on a second set to run in only certain situations/builds.
Still, a valid concern to some extent i guess.
Six then.
Count me in!
I kind see axe as melee with 900 cleave as it is, i even lol when i heared Brazil saying the same in his video.
On top of that i believe axe is power viable in some scenarios with its auto attack, off the top top of my hand the start of the imbued shaman fractal, like the entire CM dungeon, etc. You know, any scenario with 2+ mob that do not cluster for a cleave.
In cluster of mobs splitblade is amazing since i think, correct me if i’m wrong, the axes from the ability have an inherit pierce.
On PvP i am running condition atm.
I sort of see the point of going to a trainer to refund my points, this makes trait choosing meaningfull. Besides i’m not suggesting different point allocation, we already have the freedom to switch traits within the same attribute, i just wish we could macro it somehow.
Practical example: 20 points in Ranger’s skirmish allows me to get 20% off Bow skills. In a given situation, i find best to run with Greatsword and Axe/torch, so no bow! At least i can go to the panel and switch that now useless trait for another that grants 10% more crit damage with an axe.
Recapping i had to open the panel, replace the bow with two other weapons, switch to traits panel, and swap the trait.
Now before being called lazy, just imagine or better yet, remember other situations where you change more than one trait to accomodate a new weapon choice.
Ultimately and to overkill my post? imagine a situation where i switch not only weapons and trait but utility slots, armor and pets!
Please make it happen. I’ve even heard of ppl using advanced keyboard/mouse who can switch to a weapon, cast a swiftness ability and back to the previous weapon with a flip of a button with a macro, such hardware/software is prohibited in tournament play, but it can’t be that to build in the game can it?
Even if does cater to a very niche build or not, still feels lackluster.
I can see it being used on a build with spirits unbound trait. Other than i strongly believe it’s borderline nonsense, no offense, to have such movement buff to an imovable source plus being an on hit effect… i don’t. Just doesn’t make sense to me.
Why not Vigor? That might be worthwhile. I mean Lightning Reflexes grant vigor, storm spirit casts lightning, see where i’m going?
Ok guess it’s doable no matter what. I’ll raise the anti-flame shield and work on that muscle memory then.
Apart from dulfy and gw2dungeons am i missing out on good guides for struggling peeps? Maybe video ones?
Sign me up too. My playtime is more on the casual side, but i still hold that drive to perfect and to stay on top of my game. So add me if you want someone that can put his own wheight – EU
Ranger player here with an ocasional side order of Guardian, even more frequent now that FOTM level has become account wide.
After trying out a few sets, eventually i went full berserk, currently knights on guardian.
With that said, unless i’m at full ranged safety i get down a lot, AR aside (Ranger=20, Guardian=15 at 20ish and we can always tell if it was because of Agony). Besides there’s a happy coincidence about melee being more efficient damage wise since i enjoy melee more, hence why the guardian has knights to withstand 24/7 melee.
Although here’s where the plot thickens: i’m a very casual player and thus my guild participation is unfortunately low so i end up pugging a LOT… er, all the time.
TLDR: So even though zerk is the way, my feeling is unless your whole group is on board with the zerk “meta”, you’ll end up posing as a scrub since everyone is playing it safe while you’re wiping the floor.
So the question is:
should i be playing it safe in a nonzergy way?
is this pure learn to dodge regardless of what others are doing?
Should i be looking for like-minded zerg partners (lfg party message)?
Quick question about GS specifically concerning WW usage since my math is limited: should i be using it against single target even though i skip a beat from gaining one more stack of Might with its 3rd attack chain?
If not, how many mobs justify using WW over auto-attack chain?
Hi there, looking for an upgrade myself. That INTEL CORE I5 3570K looks a good candidate, found one around 180€ plus about 70€ for a board and it’s kept under my budget.
I really don’t think i’ll be tinkering with overclock, i really want a rig to setup and forget really.
On the other hand though, i’m worried about my GPU, how does a AMD Radeon HD 6670 fair in all of this? Can it keep up the gain in cpu (major change from a Dual-Core E5300 @ 2.6Ghz)?
Er… what exactly is those engies throwing at you? Your build seems ok to deal with conditions and it has gap closer / imobilizing potential…
I give up!
“I can only show you the door, you’re the one having to go through it”
You should check out Ranger Spirit play, it looks like exactly what you want. Although it might be dull to have the profession skills behaving the same, then again we do have signets across all of them but the enineer.
Our SoH just became sexier. Both cooldowns tie in nicely (untraited signets). As anybody have toyed with this sinergy yet? And the million dollar question being: does our pet get Aegis too?
The second part can backfire in a scenario where i’m at range and my pet is within melee range, close to my allies and i wish to activate the signet to help allies around.
Currently you still have the option to recall the pet and only after trigger the signet.
Also if i have the Beastmarter trait i probably would want the pet to stay put to get two effective radius
There’s 70 points to choose from and 30 to grab the full attribute, besides wouldn’t you think it makes it dull to have the traits fully streamlined?
I think we’re supposed to make tough choices, it’s intended for you to have the “oh! I really wanted to trait that one too! Buggers! I can’t” feeling everytime you finish the build.
That’s what keep us tweaking and trying out different choices.
Guys agility training gives 30% speed to the pet for 10 points in Skirmishing…
Can’t confirm wheather it stacks or not with SoH though.
In the thaumanova reactor the ranger pets can miraculously avoid falling through the floor when players characters would fall to instant death. I’ve seen both my story mode groups finish with 4 dead people, a ranger doing nothing more than running to keeping safe, and the ranger pet killing the boss. It’s an extreme example but things like that will happen everywhere as soon as you give ranger pets too much help in PvE.
Put Your hands where i can see them and step away from my profession
From another thread, thought it fits

Edit:btw i’m agreeing with you mate, hope that’s clear

Also pet ai sucks and there are so little options for controlling it. I wish there was a “stay back” option so it isn’t standing in the middle of aoe or being cleaved to death.
That’s called Guard, plus if you bring a Spider and/or a Devour you basically get one and/or two mobile “turrets” on a 15sec movable window.
It evens out since PBK* ai sucks too
*Person Behind the Keyboard
dat hotkey set up though o.O
I suspect he might be using combat mod. I used it myself but it gets impossible to use evasive leaps since autotargetting has to be on for combat ui to work.
Edit: thus making those two hammering abilities not tied to F11,12. They are probably mouse left and mouse right button since combat mod fixes your aim kind of like a fps game, which frees up your mouse buttons.

Why is PVT a better choice than PTH on WvW? I mean, i see guardian as a great engine of heals. Or giving up the healing power for vitality a sort of defense against conditions?
I’ll make it short this time: NO!
Check my post history, sick and tired of the discussion
I play fractals to…
Wait for it… i’m going to blow your mind:
TO PLAY FRACTALS!
The rewards are fluffy things to keep me entertained. Seriously does it ever occurs that too much min/maxing and fine tuning to get the most… reward? Gold, skill points, karma points, agony resist, tokens, glory or whatever, ends up detracting you from enjoying the game?
I know my post is boderline philosophical or how you want to label it, but some complaints are just too much sometimes…
Sure, i’ll elaborate, regardless of your sarcasm.
OP refers to dungeons, that said mobs don’t do a whole lot of kiting, which makes life so much easier for pets. Even if there are mobile mobs, by using our highest dps weapon, which is the sword by the way, you’re adding perma-cripple so our high dps pets (mostly felines and birds) can go to town on dps. The icing on the cake is your third chain attack giving them sweet might, so that ramps up.
In the so-called pets dying “issue” that is bound to surface, all i can say is that many of us rangers didn’t have survivability problems before the 71% hp buff, nowadays… come on! Pets are not a “send-in-and-forget” deal, their management is as active as gw2‘s combat itself. Pet Swap, recall and attack are there, keybind them and use them!
Sidenote: devours can withstand better than bears in plenty of situations.
Disclaimer: Current pets do not posesse opposable thumbs to pick up crystals on jade maw, a couple of other situations may have unavoidable pet downstates.
Wait a minute! I have to rephrase it to see if i understood: after December 10th, having the beastmarter sign
et trait from marksmanship on my trait, will allow me to trigger this one on my character aswell without having to slot the signet even though having a shared cooldown?
If so, bravo!
No team is maxed out, in terms of dps efficiency, without a Ranger. On top of that, Frost Spirit and Spotter are not the only useful things we bring to the table. Our particular dps can be absolutely on par with the next profession in line.
Once… one time i was picked on at the start of a lvl 20ish in regard of my profession.
I carried on under a small hint of disguised kick threat.
The proceeding silence towards my profession up untill the end (we even got a quitter after two unsuccessful imbued shaman attempts) of the full run was all i really wanted.
Got a ton of different shot’s with poses. I’ll post a few when i get home
Terrific math essay Solandri! Thank you.
It’s clear and beyond doubt that our sword is the prime contender for when i want raw dps and a permasnare.
I don’t think our GS should fill in the same shoes as the S. That would be reduntant.
What does frightens be is that in all honesty the GS maybe lacking its own niche. Even if you do look at it as a defensive option, many will say, “nah i’ll just add a dagger to my sword for a total amount of 3! ways to evade.”
And here lies the problem, besides a block and the stun/daze i don’t see much upside to losing raw damage against a Sword, on the contrary, when i do pick a S/x regardeless of off-hand choice it always feels like i chose the stronger offensive and defensive choice.
Therefor i completely disagree with increasing the GS damage, the direction is the other way around: GS needs its own setting, purpose, niche. I would give up Maul’s damage in exchange for a 1,5/2 sec block, at least during the bear animation.
Edit: or to go back to OP, an on-demand evade built in Maul.
(edited by Ariete.6509)
well, torch is if you’re running condition, but why not put axe off-hand in the equasion? Can be bretty good, specially if your team’s composition is missing vulnerability
I’ve just come across the Desert Gate. The soldier who you can speak with says that the last known survivors headed over to Divinities Reach and we have come across dark skinned npc’s from the sunny continent.
I think Anet turned the crystal desert into a meaningless wasteland and won’t revisit it never.
What about Cantha, did any of you found similar references to such abondonmand to the other continents to exalt Tyria and not turn its explorable areas into ghost towns?
Sorry to go a bit off-topic here, but i’m really wondering about GS vs Sword in damage, i know there’s some math elsewhere, i remember seeing a guy doing dps check on all weapons but the forum’s search function is… impossible.
I struggle to see how the GS goes so far behind the one handed sword. Coefficientes are nearly the same, difference being the S 3rd is higher, while on GS 1st is higher, but the other two are nearly the same damage. Now i know that the rate of fire so-to-speak of the sword far exceeds that of the GS, plus on the long run the might that S 3rd gives to the pet really adds up by your pet doing more damage, but what about Maul? The Sword has no real dps booster, it’s basically AA chain + pet increasing might, while GS has Maul for the added substantial damage + vulnerability stacking which will make your GS + pet (and everyone else) beating harder.
How does GS fall so far behind in DPS?
I don’t think it’s realistic to ask for a blast finisher on the GS, since it already have two: leap on swoop and projectile on 2nd chain of #4 Crippling Throw.
Although i do agree current Maul could as well be added on auto-cast, it’s just one of those abilities which you hammer down whenever is off cooldown… yawn
My patience is through.
My ranger name is Gume on EU. Add me to your list and i’ll show you how my pet performs, tell you what, we’ll put a marker on the pet so you can track its movements, i’ll even make it as a priority to keep replacing the mark on pet swap. Or better yet, no marking so i can perform at my best so you can track it and see that the pet is absolutely no drag at all.
Although what is a fact is that the pet management is as active as the combat itself. Take a MMO player used to “rotations” and he’ll mess up dodging at first. Bring in a player who has played other MMO’s where the pet is self suficient and it will go down. I’ve never played a class/profession with focus on pet, in GW i did play a Ranger, but rarely ran pet builds, so i didn’t have any preconceived notions to free myself from.
I’ve had problem with the pet… roughly on the first two months after release… recently there was the big hp buff to minions in PVE… imagine how troublesome is my pet now.
Anyway we can roll whatever you want, apart form a handfull of situations (bear in mind that my pets don’t have opposable thumbs to pick up crystals in Jade Maw, some boss in HotW and another in… CM? maybe? can’t recall, plus i care too much for my pet to demand it survives… you know… A ZERG!).
I don’t have absolutely no other idea to brake that denial bubble, and for your information, i can’t really stream/record because my pc lacks horse power, so considering technical issues, i can’t help any more, i’m done trying to reason and convince people that simply crawl in their own opinion.
I’ll be more than happy to show you the sweet side of having a pet.
So what’s the problem YOU been having with pet?
Can i help?
