BWE 3 Dragonhunter Specialization Changes

Would be nice if Karl would actually respond. He has taken the time to interact with the two other professions he is managing (Ele/Tempest, and Thief/Daredevil). Yet the guard thread is left silent… As usual.

tink i mentioned this before, they held off dragonhunter changes from BWE2 until BWE3 so essentially wat u saw in BWE2 was already old DH stuff.

they said sumthing like “it was too late to submit all the changes in time for BWE2 but we’ll see them in BWE3”

in reality, they wanted to work on the other profs, ignore guards for a bit under the guise of “well u haven’t rally seen the latest DH, so just wait until after that before we talk DH again”

conspiracy theory frum me? sure. too far from the truth? nah

That being said the one thing we could provide feedback on last Beta and now is Traps. I understand Karl wanting us to wait and try the new changes regarding everything else, but Traps remain untouched.

Considering this is the last Beta weekend i hope Karl can push through a Trap revamp in time for testing, THIS is what he should be talking to us about now.

Either Karl is keeping quite because the devs have no idea what to do to fix Traps, or they are still working hard to change them and their not ready for us to test it yet.

I still want this question awenserd from Karl:

What role will the Dragon Hunter play in raids? Will they be a viable option?

I don’t think Traps should get condi cleanse or any supportive features. We already have access to plenty of that in our other skills, Traps are meant to be different, offer something different.

Whats the one thing Guardians lack? Conditions.

This quote taken from the Dragonhunter reveal post… “the new elite specialization gives them access to some conditions and functionality normally reserved for professions of a more physical nature.”

I think Traps should be our most superior damage skill option with lots of bleed, burning, cripple and other condis mixed in.

Traps need a major rework, similar to how Tempest Rebound just got a revamp, but i think it would be a mistake to offer us even more support on top of our already impressive supportive core skills

(i still think traps should be changed to marks, or symbols, or wells, or wards)

The Scrapper gets Reveal on a 19 second cooldown as there F5, meanwhile Dragonhunters have to sacrifice a crucial skill slot for disgustingly bad Trap on a 45 second cooldown to gain access to reveal.

The Scrapper also gets a AOE bubble reflecting projectiles that is move-able as there F3 on a 24 second cooldown, while Wall of Reflection is on a 40 second cooldown and only reflects from one direction. Our Shield weapon bubble absorbs not reflects not move-able and its on a 24 second cooldown.

Whats the point in playing the Guardian or the Dragonhunter in HoT?

Every other profession can now do everything we can do but 10000% better.

What role does the Guardian/Dragonhunter play in raids? There is no reason to bring us anymore with all the overpowerd elite specs coming.

These changes only confirm my suspicions; DH is a ranged spec and it’s intent is to enhance that kind of play. So many comments would not exist here if people could wrap their heads around that fact.

If only the devs would wrap their heads around that fact and give us a set of skills that are not melee focused.

All this trap hate…

The game is releasing in a month, a week, and a day. This is not enough time to replace the traps with something different even if they wanted to.

And as for wanting to: It’s fairly clear that dragonhunter is guardian/ranger, likely intended at least in part as something for people who like ranger gameplay but don’t want a pet. Guardian utilities already have many of the functionalities of non-pet-based ranger utilities, with traps being the ranger functionality that guardians don’t have, so that’s what the dragonhunter gets.

If you don’t like the traps, there’s nothing forcing you to use them. Guardian has plenty of other utilities to choose from even if you choose to go dragonhunter, and vanilla guardian is still an option.

I can understand that for many guardian players, it’s disappointing that the elite specialisation they get is essentially a secondary profession rather than a direct expansion of the core guardian playstyle, like chronomancer is an expansion of the mesmer playstyle. I was disappointed too, until I recognised that what we have is in fact a secondary profession.

Personally, I’d rather look forward to a future elite specialisation that is more to our tastes than to gripe about the one that’s been designed. If you really hate the idea of traps that you feel you’ll never ever use them, this may not be the specialisation for you… but other people will enjoy it. The next one may be what you’re waiting for.

They completely reworked the Tempest skill Rebound so they can do the same for Traps.

Traps in there current form are 100% completely unquestionably useless. Fact.

Can Guardians get some sort of intervention with Spirit Weapons plssssss? How about Anet gets rid of traps and turns spirit weapons into engi kits for more active game play : D

nope.

Kits thematically do not fit the guardians at all. Engie have it for very good reasons (they have no weapon swap, and they have limited weapon options).

Kits are coming in our second elite spec so get use to it.

Spirit Weapons desperately need help. They have been broken since game launch and the devs have failed to even acknowledge there’s a problem.

Shield, Spirit Weapons and now Traps. The Guardian is the trash can of professions.

Traps:
We’re continuing to work on trap usability, functionality and improve visual effects. There’s not a whole lot in this update, but we continue to appreciate your feedback on these abilities.

This worries me.

If i am correct this is the last Beta weekend before launch, this was your last chance to rework Traps and allow us to test them.

Traps need a complete redesign or replacement. You have no other option.

“There’s not a whole lot in this update” – Implying what? That you are secretly working on redesigning Traps in the background but those changes wont be ready in time for BW3? I hope so.

“usability, functionality and improve visual effects” – Visual effects should be the last thing you worry about. You could make Traps instant cast and ground-targetable and they still wouldn’t be viable. No logical thinking intelligent person is going to sacrifice a skill slot for a Trap. You would be giving up so much reliable support. If you want us to take Traps you need to make them reliable and not dependent on the enemy playing badly.

“we continue to appreciate your feedback on these abilities.” – Yet the past two Beta tests weren’t enough feedback for you to realize Traps suck? The last three years of Traps sucking across the game wasn’t enough feedback?

It is looking likely that Traps won’t be touched before launch, if at all. Every other profession gets a set of shiny new toys to play with we get nothing.

Symbol of Energy: Increased missile velocity by 60%. Increased symbol damage by 10%. The initial burning impact now inflicts two stacks of burning, up from one. This skill can now be fired behind you.

I’m so confused. From Aug 26:

  • Symbol of Energy: Removed the burning on impact (no other symbol has an additional effect, so this felt weird). Increased damage dealt by 10%.

I noticed that too, i am hoping that maybe they decided to keep the burning because many people complained about its removal. This makes my condi guard happy!

Now i hope they bring back bleed in some form.

Remake the traps to be marks and.....

in Guardian

Arnath.2319

Marks would be superior to Traps in every way and would offer us a new unique play-style. Sadly i think the devs are committed to Traps, but we can try and change their minds.

Traps do not work with GW2 combat system, they are an extremely slow game-play style and requires the enemies to be bad for them to be successful.

Marks still offer the strategic placement/trigger that Traps offer, however we swap the invisible nature of Traps for much shorter cooldown, blast radius and condi play that Marks offer.

Not all of our traps need to be ground targeted. I would love to see greater diversity with traps, some ranged, some trigger off friends, some enemies.

For example ‘Procession of Blades’ should be a ground target-able Whirl Finisher that bleeds enemies because it is competing with ‘Purging Flames’.

But ‘Fragments of Faith’ should be like ‘Healing Spring’ where it is placed under our feet, the fragments scatter around us and we receive some kind of positive effect for standing in the circular area. (I still think Fragments of Faith should be our heal).

Defender's Dogma - Why?

in Guardian

Posted by: Arnath.2319

Arnath.2319

I have mentioned this before, it is a serious issue. Here are the Traits that buff the active F1 effect and the passive F1 effect.

Active

  • Justice Is blind
  • Renewed Justice
  • Wrath of Justice
  • Inspired Virtues
  • Virtue of Retribution
  • Supreme Justice
  • Big Game Hunter

Passive

  • Supreme Justice
  • Permeating Wrath
  • Defenders Dogma
  • Zealot’s Aggression

They designed our virtues to be used. Yet four of our traits encourage us to never use.
This is strongly shown in the current condi burn guard build were you must never active F1 in order to stack burning quicker with ‘Supreme Justice’ and to spread the burning in a AOE with ‘Permeating Wrath’.

I see two possible solutions, change the traits that buff the passive effect to buff the active.
OR.
Allow the passive to permanently stay even if F1 is on cool-down.

BWE 2 Dragonhunter feedback thread:

The first change i would make to Traps is this:

Delete ‘Purification’.

Fragments of FaithHeal yourself and imbue the light into the ground unleashing multiple fragments into the area. Each fragment grants aegis to allies, as long as they don’t already have aegis. Each fragment whether taken by yourself or an ally heals you. Allies standing in the trap have plus boon duration.

Reason: Trap heal is competing with ‘Shelter’ and ‘Litany of Wrath’. The current Trap heal ‘Purification’ is worthless in comparison. Making ‘Fragments of Faith’ the heal would give us the options of ‘Shelter- selfish defensive heal’, ‘Litany of Wrath- DPS heal’ and ‘Fragments of Faith- non selfish defensive heal’.

It also adds diversity to the traps, Rangers have ‘Healing Spring’, a trap that doesn’t need activation, so why cant Dragonhunters have Traps like that.

BWE 2 Dragonhunter feedback thread:

Arnath.2319

Traps, lets break it down so we can all see how bad they currently are.

Purification – competing with ‘Shelter’ and ‘Litany of Wrath’. Might as well delete this Trap from the game since no one will take it over our current two king heals.

Test of Faith – garbage. completely worthless. provides a short cripple to those who cross the outer ring of the circle. for those standing in the circle nothing happens. Since we have cripple on Longbow AND cripple on F1 passive with the new trait there is no logical reason to take this disgustingly bad clunky horrible Trap.

Procession of Blades – whirling wrath clone, except it’s not a Whirl Finisher, can’t be moved, and on a stupidly long cool-down. The only half decent thing about this trap was the old trait that applied bleed on hit, now that’s gone. Why would any logical thinking person take this Trap when you could take ‘Purging Flames’ – shorter cooldown, does damage, remove conditions / shortens condi duration and it can be ground targeted.

Fragments of Faith – perhaps the only decent Trap. Despite its long cool-down and long cast-time and short Aegis duration. Wall of Reflection or Sanctuary are more reliable group support.

Light’s Judgement – PVP only Trap. Only worth using in niche circumstances for the Reveal. Worthless in PVE. Far easier to stack vulnerability other ways.

Dragon’s Maw – okay for niche circumstances. but with Longbow and Scepter offering CC i would rather take one of our other group supportive elites.

I am not expecting Traps to be overpowered, but i expect them to be an option.

I am in shock that there are a small minority of people saying Traps are good. What?!

Traps are pure 100% garbage. There is not a single redeemable thing about those poorly designed train wreck set of skills.

Worthless in PVE.
Worthless in PVP.

Why would a logical thinking person ever waste a skill slot with a Trap? When we have access to so many superior options, condi cleanse, dps, stability, group support, projectile reflect/destroy. Traps offer NOTHING.

Not only do they offer nothing but they are on a ridiculous super long cooldown, they rely on the enemy being stupid, they can easily be dodged or moved out of, they have a ridiculously long cast time, and even if luck is on your side and the enemie triggers the trap and dosent move they are still SUPER weak.

It is hard not to feel personally insulted that we received a set of skills worse then spirit weapons, worse then signets, worse then Shield weapon.

Since the new changes wont come in until next Beta the only thing we can adequately provide feedback on is Traps.

That being said, with the upcoming changes Longbow will be in a okay spot for launch. Still needs small changes but the overall desighn of the weapon is fine.

My biggest issue with the new Virtues is Spear of Justice and how half our talents encourage us to never use it, the other half encourage us to use it on cooldown. We now have two talents in Dragonhunter that buffs the passive effect, and one that buffs the active effect.

Would it be too overpowered if they made our F1 passive stay even when on cooldown? This would make all the F1 talents not only in Dragonhunter but across the core traits viable again.

Traits still need heaps of work. Largely because our core traits are so superior in every way Dragonhunter is a direct nerf to spec into too, even with the upcoming changes.

The biggest most disturbing problem with Dragonhunter is our Traps. Never did i think we would see a set of skills more useless then Spirit Weapons but Traps have taken the cake.

Traps desperately need a mega massive overhaul.

Dragonhunter Changes for Next BWE!

in Guardian

Arnath.2319

We should collectively work together to address the biggest problem facing Dragonhunters: Traps.

Karl has acknowledged Longbow, Virtues and Traits, and while those things are not perfect they have the basic ground works in place.

Traps on the other-hand are in a desperate need for a redesign. They are the most useless skills in the game and we must now amp up the pressure to see these skills changed before launch.

For example, ‘Test of Faith’ is currently the worst trap, now with the recent changes giving us access to even more cripple this Trap is significantly worse. Who would ever sacrifice a skill slot for a horribly gimmicky cripple when we can get cripples from Justice passive.

‘Procession of Blades’ is just a slightly higher dps ‘Whirling Wrath’ except it’s on a much higher cool-down, can’t be moved, and isn’t a Whirl Finisher.

‘Purification’, No one will ever use this. Shelter and Littany of Wrath for Medi guards is just to strong. I suggest making ‘Fragments of Faith’ the heal. Shelter being our selfish defensive heal, and Fragments being a group defensive heal.

’Light’s Judgement’ will have it’s situational use in PVP for the reveal but stacking Vulnerability is far easier with Spear of Justice + Scepter Smite. Other classes bring better Vulnerability, why would we ever sacrifice a skill slot for this trap?

Traps in there current form are garbage.
There is no +healing +damage that will fix them.
they need a complete total redesign from the ground up.

Dragonhunter, Lost All Vision

in Guardian

Posted by: Arnath.2319

Arnath.2319

The Dragonhunter has struggled with a solid vision since day one. Firstly we were described as “big-game hunters”, then “witch hunters”, and slowly different aspects of this elite specialization were stripped away.

I went back to the Dragonhunter announcement post to remind myself of what the developers original hide in mind:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/meet-the-dragonhunter-guardians-elite-specialization/

Specializes in ranged combat and back-line support. This weapon set will focus less on engaging enemies at close range.

Then why traps? Traps that we either run into melee to place then run back out, or let the enemies run toward us (if they are stupid non range NPC’s) and trigger in our melee.
Traps completely counter “ranged combat” design goal and clash horribly with the Longbow.

Focus on firing massive, single projectiles at a ferocious velocity.

Gladly this is now being addressed with ‘Spear of Justice’ getting a 100% velocity increase, ‘Puncture Shot’ 66% increase, and ‘Symbol of Energy’ 60% increase.

Gives them access to some conditions and functionality normally reserved for professions of a more physical nature.

Karl announced recently that bleed on trap trait will be replaced.
No more access to bleed.
Plus the burning was removed from Symbol of Energy.

“Condi Guardian, it’s a thing, prepare yourself.” – Joshua Davis, Dragonhunter POI.

What changed? While i agree that trait was weak it was largely because our traps are weak.
Our only source of condi damage is now Spear of Justice, and half our traits encourage us never to use it!
If the original goal was to give Guardians access to new conditions then please keep to that goal.
With the recent changes Dragonhunter has slowly become yet another ranged zerker spec. A Zeal clone but Longbow instead of Greatsword.

Please reconsider re-adding bleed to the Dragonhunter, perhaps via Longbow crits, or Spear of Justice?

They’ll gain a bit of innate mobility.

Is this reference to ‘Wings of Resolve’? With our Longbow skills rooting us in place and F2’s short range, i struggle to see where this “innate mobility” was implemented.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

I greatly appreciate that Karl is listening to our feedback and making improvements, but i am alarmed at how chaotic the design of the Dragonhunter is.
Are we a condi spec? Another zerker clone? Ranger clone? PvP only? Do we range dps or melee? Are we a supportive spec or pure dps?

I feel like i’m having an identity crisis.

Please clarify, do you want us to use Spear of Justice or not?

Half our traits encourage F1 use.
Half encourage us to never use it and rely on the passive.

Change all the traits that improve the passive effect to improve the active effect.
Or allow the passive effect to stay even after activation.

Also I hate how Dragon Hunter is no longer condi friendly, it’s just another Zeal clone now. No more bleeds, no more burning, I thought one of the goals of the Dragonhunter was to make condi guards viable? This trait line is loosing its unique flavour.

I also hate how all our traits are designed for PVP. Where is the PVE love?

The Deflecting Shot changes are perfect, Longbow is almost perfect now.

Traps are still garbage tho.

(Warning: Fun is subjective, below is my own opinion on fun.)

I have been playing the Guardian since the beta weekends before GW2 launch. Over the years this profession has gotten rusty, i started to not have fun.

Then the core trait revamp patch hit and everything changed when the fire nation attacked! We received the trait…

Radiant Fire: this trait gave new life to my Guardian. I equipped a Torch for the first time since launch and started throwing blue fireballs all over the place.

This got me thinking, why doesn’t the Dragonhunter have fun traits like this?

So i got creative and made some up, add yours below!

  • Cleansing ArrowsDeflecting Shot has %chance of summoning Bow of Truth. (20s icd)
(Dragonhunter lacks condi cleanse, this helps without taking away from other more reliable condi cleanse traits/skills. Plus if you have the Bow of Truth as one of your skills you can spam use it’s active effect.)
  • Binding ArrowsLongbow critical hits place the Binding Blade debuff on the enemy.
(Have Greatsword in your weapon swap? Mark the enemies up then pull them all in towards you. Pull them into your traps or just to melee them down)
  • Holt RetreatIf Spear of Justices tether is broken before time expires you are granted Swiftness and Quickness for Xseconds.
(The tether breaks if the enemie runs away, this will help us stop their retreat and hunt them down!)
  • Trap WardAll traps, once triggered, create a Ring of Warding for Xseconds.
(Traps are easy to dodge out off… not anymore)

Dragon Hunter, Traps Into Wells.

in Guardian

Posted by: Arnath.2319

Arnath.2319

How would others feel if Traps were changed into Wells?

Traps are currently the worst set of skills in game, disliked by many even before the Dragon Hunter was announced. After testing the Traps in the recent Beta weekend the majority of players agree that Traps are not only terrible but work against ranged Longbow play.

Our Elite Specialization weapon should work with our Elite Specialization skills. A ranged weapon requires a ranged set of skills.

I attempted to convert the Dragon Hunter Traps into Wells below:

  • PurificationCreate a Well of light healing yourself initially, enemies are damaged and blinded. When it expires, the light returns to you for a second heal.
  • Fragments of FaithCreate a Well that deals damage and pulses aegis to allies, as long as they don’t already have aegis. When it expires, unleashes multiple fragments into the area. Each fragment grants aegis.
  • Test of FaithCreate a Well that initially pushes enemies out of it crippling them, any enemies that reenter the well is punished severely. When it expires, it leaves behind a Ring of Warding.
  • Procession of BladesCreate a Well that summons magical blades, whirling around damaging enemies. Combo Finisher: Whirl. When it expires, the blades fire in all directions piercing and burning.
  • Dragon’s MawCreate a Well that pulls enemies in damaging and slowing them. When it expires, creates a barrier which holds them.

The only trap i struggle to convert is Light’s Judgement because of how Reveal works.

Devs Goals With Elite Specs

in Guardian

Posted by: Arnath.2319

Arnath.2319

Something Colin said in POI Ep.28 before the beta weekend started has been repeating in my mind.
He said this on elite specialization feedback:

“cause they should feel like something brand new for your profession, you know in a lot of ways we like to call them almost a new sub profession, and ideally that’s part of the feedback we wanna get, do they feel that way? do they stand out? do they feel unique?”

Should elite specs be unique compared to our other core traits? Or compared to all other professions?

When Dragon Hunter was announced i kept an open mind. I always wanted the Longbow but traps scared me considering there bad reputation currently in game.
There have been many discussions on the Dragon Hunter, but the one thing that keeps coming back to haunt me is what Colin said above.

How does the Dragon Hunter differ from Rangers?

Longbow and traps. It is a copy-paste Ranger wannabee but significantly weaker with horrible gimmicks.
Was this ArenaNets intention? Sure Dragon Hunter is unique in comparison to our other core traits, but in comparison to other professions in game it looks and plays just like a trap Ranger.

So to answer Colins questions:

Does the Dragon Hunter feel like a new sub profession? NO.
Does the Dragon Hunter stand out? NO.
Does the Dragon Hunter feel unique? NO.

I am concerned because this feedback has been given to ArenaNet already, yet the devs have so far failed to acknowledge this core problem. I am worried that the developers are being rushed to get the expansion finished as quickly as possible.

What changes can the devs make to give the Dragon Hunter uniqueness and differ itself from Rangers so it achieves the core goals Colin himself laid out?

Whats the point in providing feedback?

What is the point in having a beta weekend if all our feedback is deliberately ignored?

Like many i eagerly awaited the devs post regarding Dragon Hunter feedback and the changes that we would see next beta weekend. Only to find that the devs did not listen to any of our feedback. Not a single issue that was raised in these forums was addressed.

Slapping +damage on random things is not a fix!

Tempests are equally upset with the devs deliberate attempt to muzzle us by hoping bigger numbers would shut us up.

What was the point in having a beta weekend if they do not care about what we have to say?

Why do the devs always ignore these forums? Have they lost there passion in this game? Do they hate Guardians?

Are there greater powers at work forcing the devs to rush development and get the game out as fast as possible thus leaving Dragon Hunters in a terrible state?

I shouldn’t be surprised, three years and shield/spirit weapons are still garbage.

I pray to all the gods, i will sacrifice a thousand baby quaggans, i will fast (in game) for one hundred days, i will do all this just so Robert Gee can take control of this class.

Please save us Robert Gee, you are our only hope!

bump*
because we’re still kicking rocks here…

And then kicked IN the rocks when they finally post the changes. v_v

I said it would happen. A part of me hoped it wouldn’t, a part of me hoped ArenaNet would actually care about this game and about this class.

Sadly Dragon Hunter will continue to suck, they did not read any of our feedback.

I hope i can still get a refund.

Dragonhunter Changes for Next BWE!

I don’t know if i should laugh or cry.

You obviously did not read any of the feedback given over the beta weekend!

These changes are pointless and do not address any of the core issues raised numerous times!

Traps are still garbage.
Traits are still garbage.
Virtues still have a cast time.
Deflecting Shot and Auto Attack are still garbage.
Virtue trait line is useless with Dragon Hunter.

Honestly what is happening at ArenaNet? Do they hate Guardians that much that they would deliberately insult us with these “changes”?

Dragon Hunter doesn’t need an overhaul and neither does shield.

Please tell me you are trolling. Or at the very least brand new to this class and have no idea what you are talking about.

Sorry guys! This one is taking a little longer to get written up, but we are working on it!

I hope the reason it’s taking longer is because Dragon Hunter needs significant drastic overwhelming changes to make it fun and viable.

Fix the new Virtues, fix Longbow, scrap the traps and traits and start from scratch.

I would also like to hear something about shield.

Sadly i bet all we will read is “Dragon Hunters are in a good place right now, we will lower the cooldown on shield skills by one second. You’re welcome, see you in another three years.”

Which bow (skin) will you use?

Assuming they make the Longbow viable, and make Dragon Hunter viable, and our traits, virtues, traps viable…

I will most likely be very unoriginal and use Wings of Dwayna XD

Herald

The Revenant elite specialization Herald will become better stronger Guardians.

Plus there weapon, SHIELD, is everything we Guardians have been begging the devs the last three years for.

Envoy of Exuberance: Dragon energy cascades from the shield to protect and heal your allies, then comes back to you. As it’s a ground-targeted skill, you can position this one strategically to maximise its usefulness.

Crystal Hibernation: A crystal energy shield prevents damage after this skill has been channelled, and it also quickly tops up your health pool. Your character gains a defiance bar when this skill is used, and the risk of using it will need to be considered carefully.

For three years we have been begging the devs to rework shield (amongst other things -spirit weapons) and we consistently get ignored.

Now we receive the worst elite specialization (thus far) Dragon Hunter, with the worst skills in the game (Traps) with a Longbow that is weaker then Scepter and Virtues that are weaker then the current Virtues.

Anyone else regretting pre-purchasing Heart of Thorns?
Do the devs even read these forums?
Is all our feedback ignored?

(sorry for the rant but after three years i am beyond frustrated)

Keep Virtues as they are.

Add new F4, passive is weaker swiftness, active is the wings of the turkey leap that triggers fields and gives swiftness when land.

Spear of Justice replaces Deflecting Shot.

Traps removed, we receive a set of skills that are actually useful.

Shield of Courage is worked into one of those new skills.

At least that’s what i would do to make the Dragon Hunter viable… one can dream.
