I still despise the mix of divine powers and technology

Agree 110%. Gods don’t/shouldn’t need technology to get stuff done. It undermines the value and meaning of divinity.

Except the human gods aren’t divine, they are aliens from another planet. Therefore using technology isn’t a problem.

Where did you get that idea? Just because their avatars walked the earth doesn’t make them flesh and blood.

Also, aren’t most deities “alien” by concept?

I am not sure. Balthazar used different sword in final instance and he sent his hounds to kill us

I had the same thought, but maybe those hounds were illusions, too? After all, they were too weak to be a God’s pets.

[…]3 teams are totally unnecessary if they are doing everything in the same ways.

Can you see that there are 3 teams? Can you feel differences? I can’t, everything works in the same way, that’s really disappointing.

In defense of some of the devs, I need to point out that not everything was done the same way and that some episodes displayed a lot more talent in story-telling (plot) and quality writing (dialogue) than others.

I think the writing for Ep. 2 (humor) and 4 (characters, events) was a lot better than 1 (boring altogether), 3 (childish dialogue) and 5 (bad plot twist + awful dialogue). It differs in regard of the maps and their content however, which would require a separate rating.

We can agree that, if nothing else, consistency in not a thing this season.

An engine of existing character names in Gw2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashantara.8731

I wonder if there is a real money market for popular character names already. Character name grabbing exists. I actually met people who create free accounts in newly released games just to secure the name, in case they want to play it at some point.

That’s terrible. But then again, it is always more fun to use your own creations than “widely popular” names. I don’t have (and never had) a single character whom I would name after existing characters from novels, movies etc., or after real people (I was accused of being a Draco Malfoy fan, because my Ranger’s first name is Draco, but that character’s complete name I came up with in a pen & paper RPG back in 1992, which was long before Harry Potter).

Masteries per se were a great invention, if they hadn’t been so tightly locked to story progress in HoT. That ruined it for many, and calling people “lazy” because they have better things to do with their time than grinding XP and Mastery Points is quite impertinent. Furthermore, the fact that you won’t gain any more non-mastery XP unless you have all Masteries maxed is also an outrage, therefore I do understand people complaining about the status quo (even though Anet seems to have understood their own mistake and handled things better post-HoT).

P.S. I have all Masteries maxed, so you can’t say I was trying to “defend” a certain point of view because I was having trouble with the issue myself.

It does not ruin anything, it is all perspective, no mmorpg should he a cakewalk. If you want super easy there are always phone games. I understand why people are complaining but it does not justify it. They are far from being half as grind as other mmorpgs and if people do not wish to invest the effort and time they should not be playing an mmorpg at all.

I can’t say anything about other MMOs as I’ve never played any (except DDO, but that was different in pretty much every aspect).

I didn’t say that people shouldn’t be investing time if they want something. What I wrote was that the game is literally limiting their basic content access by locking Masteries to story content (you can’t proceed with HoT if you don’t have certain Masteries) and cutting their XP gain (for Spirit Shards) if they don’t grind all Masteries (including Raid Masteries).

btw, taxis are not explained in the game either, they are not kind of the lore.

I only figured out what a taxi is because I asked someone when I read about it in map chat. And then, only after I participated in a gw2community organized Triple Trouble event, I really figured out how the map instances work and how and why people use taxis.

Welcome to the club, as we say in German. We’ve all been in that boat when we started out, and I agree, it is a drag.

Like I said many times before, the game needs a solid tutorial, GW2 Wiki etc. just doesn’t do. It is too much for any beginner and many feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff they need to google in order to understand all the game mechanics.

Now, I don’t even need an LFG to get to a good map instance because I can guess who will command and just /sqjoin. I’m pretty sure there are casual players who played for a year or more and have no clue how map instances and taxis work.

Well, you can’t always rely on specific people being online when you are. It will force you to only do events at given times, which is a shame as there are constantly event squads outside of gw2community.

It’s not your language….

Hoelbrak, Gretchen etc… doesn’t matter that words you know may have a real world origin, this is a fantasy world with its own language and script that has different pronunciations than you’re used too.

The linguist in me disagrees. Just like in real life, people should strife for an authentic pronunciation (e.g., names like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Dirk Nowitzki are not being pronounced correctly overseas, and that is plain ignorant IMO).

While in RL nobody speaks every existing language, at least in a production that does use several languages (the game has character and location names in French, German, several Skandinavian languages, Japanese, Chinese) one could educate people by being as authentic as possible. I believe that to be something of importance, but maybe that is just me.

Well when I say I think 9 classes would be enough, it will only be enough if they can get Elite Specs going nicely =-)

I don’t disagree, that, more would be good to be honest =-)

+1

As for Ranger as a Derv look at my Elite Avatar skill that I posted above. It would definitely work for Ranger and not so much for other classes, Avatars are fairly important to the Dervish setup. And really Ranger could do with a proper melee build.

True, but I wouldn’t call it “Dervish” then, as that is truly something I cannot associate with the concept of the Ranger profession (as it has a more “religious” spiritual background).

I am TOTALLY with you on the Druid front! I made a Ranger so I would never have to heal anything. LOL and what did Anet do! Made a heal Spec for Ranger LOL.

Indeed. That’s why I think that a separate Healer profession is in order (instead of “perverting” other professions for that purpose). The Guardian is heavy-armored, so they can’t give that profession a Monk elite spec.

Petition: Bring the Monk back! (Monk love, heartbroken) Monks were the poster boys & girls of GW1, they do belong in the GW universe and are dearly missed in GW2.

Maybe the people who keep saying the maps aren’t dead know how to find full maps! Maybe the people who say the maps are dead don’t know how to find full maps because it isn’t told anywhere in-game.

Yes. It is called the LFG (Looking For Group) tool that should always be used to either find an event map or initiate one by taxiing people in.

I see the OP being criticized because he doesn’t know how the DS meta works. Where is it explained in-game?

I absolutely agree with that kind of criticism.

The game, in general, is in no way self-explanatory. The fact that none of the events (especially Dragon’s Stand) is explained, is only one of the many things that cause newbies a severe headache (and understandably so). You do have to ask in order to learn, or else you are lost.

As for the LFG tool, took me a while myself to figure it out (I think it was updated since then to increase its usability).

We know it changes the pronunciation, we just don’t give a skritt.

That is pretty sad (because it is ignorant), but also typical.

I play the game in English, and most of the Skandinavian and German names (which there are plenty of among the Norn characters and locations) are pronounced inaccurately as kitten. From cities like “Hoelbrak” to names like “Gretchen” (will never understand why it is such a popular name in the U.S., when it means “Little Margarete” and is merely a nick name, as in term of endearment, and never used as an actual first name), everything is pronounced wrong.

I wonder why American game developers, once they decide to implement foreign language into their products, never bother to look things up before they hand the script to the voice actors.

If they insist on everyone having unique names, I think they should add a system in which any character that has been off-line for X amount of time (a year?) has their name up for grabs, and if the name’s been taken by someone else when/if they come back online, they have to choose a new name.

That would be unacceptable. First come, first served. Not my fault if real life is keeping me away from the game for a while, why would that make me lose my name?

I haven’t had trouble so far finding suitable names, and eight of my ten characters are “newish” by GW2 standards (also, only three use names from GW1 which were reserved for me).

Alternate keyboard symbols such as ä, ü, and ö are your friends

Not a good idea, because Americans believe that doesn’t change the pronunciation, when it does, and greatly so.

Don’t you think that, if they kept an eye on people’s perception of their latest releases (not in hindsight but just in time), that everyone would benefit from it in the long run, though?

P.S. Indeed, HoT was not newbie-friendly and I personally know several people who quit when it was released. Unfortunately, they continued down the road of making things as difficult for people as possible — not all of the devs, mind you, but certain design teams (there are several teams, right?).

I don’t think it will ever be enough.

I still think Dervish would be best suited to Ranger with animal class Avatars like I posted up a little higher in this posts page.

Ashantara.8731

Since there has been a lot of criticism lately as for the quality, consistency and credibility of the current season’s developments, I would suggest that ArenaNet implemented a quick survey at the end of each story mission (past and future) to get a better picture of what the players liked and what they disliked.

This doesn’t have to be too complicated and it should run only for a limited amount of time (2-3 months?).

I am picturing a pop-up (like the mission reward window) where you can rate the following categories

  • Plot (consistency, story credibility)
  • Dialogue (character credibility, quality of writing)
  • Fun (difficulty/challenge level, innovation)
    … with three possible ratings:
    [ _ ] Liked
    [ _ ] Indifferent
    [ _ ] Disliked

I think this could be helpful for both sides, as players would feel like they can contribute to the future quality of content and devs would get an instant feedback rather than reading through tons of posts.

Note: Participation should be optional, i.e. once the survey goes online, people have to confirm or decline participation (e.g., by checking the option at game launch in their login screen).

Thoughts?

P.S. Perhaps they could also add an option where you can select your age category (<21, 21-35, 36-45, 46+) to see how every age group responds differently or if the tenor is equal across all groups.

I don’t know, lore wise, and as a roleplayer, I just like the feel of norn and their shapeshifting shamanic roots more than humans.

The problem is that — like the Asura with their golems — the Norn’s shapeshifting ability (honestly, I had totally forgotten about that!) has been reduced to skills nobody uses, because they are not strong enough build-wise.

This is a huge shame. They could have made it so that Norn automatically shape-shift under certain conditions. That would have made them more interesting and reminded players of their supposedly unique background.
