We hope we’ve brought each story chapter, each open-world zone, and each mount up to the level of what you experienced in the demos last month.

I seriously hope you have improved the things that people have criticized about certain map mechanics and, of course, the elite specializations (effects, balancing, and so on).

Don’t disappoint me! I would hate to take my leave from this game because of recent design disappointments and the increasingly infantile writing.

Nevertheless, good luck with the launch. I hope everything works out for both sides.

Voiceover issues

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Ashantara.8731

I’m having tons of issues with voiceovers on all my characters. It seems that I can not be directly facing an NPC who is speaking, or i can’t hear it. I also can’t hear my own voice in a lot of places. The NPCs have to be on either the left or right side of my character. ANy ideas or is this a known issue?

I believe that GW2 does not support Surround 5.1/7.1 Sound. Therefore, you can not hear certain channels.

Change to stereo (i.e., dual) channel in your Windows sound settings, and that should solve the problem.

What can we do about it as players currently? Report and hope someone does something about it.

I once reported a trio that kicked me out of a dungeon at the end, before the final reward was given, just for the sake of gloating, even when they were all laying in the dirt at the feet of the final boss and I had to save the day by myself. What a grateful behavior (they were probably mad that I didn’t help them back up, but alas, you cannot rez three people while the ceiling is collapsing on top of you!).

Nothing was done about it, or at least that’s what the support’s answer suggested. So yeah, there need to be more options for in-game reporting. You can’t always go through the pain of taking screenshots etc., then open a ticket for this sort of issue.

Reporting inappropriate guild names?

That is an excellent question. The same goes for pet names, but I was told that ANet had stated at some point to use the player name report for that. All very confusing, there should be clearer guidelines and more in-game report options.

Please let us skip Living Story Dialogue

in Living World

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

I am playing through the content for the sixth time, and now I am always continuing to explore the map (if the dialogue happens outside of an instanced story mission) while my character is still engaged in a vivid dialogue with some NPC. Since dialogues work even kilometers away, I explored all of Ember Bay that way, making use of the time so I wouldn’t have to waste my time just standing there and listening to the same blahblah.

In story instances, I tend to go watch the news, visit the bathroom, grab something to eat, or text message a friend — sometimes several of those things, because that’s how long those dialogues drag on.

It’s rather ridiculous. A skip option is mandatory!
.

P.S. Don’t ask me about some of the Season 2 story achievements. Take the “World Summit” one for instance. You have to go through the whole march and speeches and discussions again and again, because the fight is at the end of that story instance and you can’t skip forward, not even during the use of the challenge mote.

Tbh i feel angry right now. Because i need to spend another $ for living world story… i need the access to the maps and achievements..

I know i can exchange gold for gems. But this is so wrong, farming almost maybe 500gold to unlock another content while i just bought all content that anet sells on website… for new player who want catching up this is too much work, cant enjoy while im thinking im playing this way…

You got the original campaign for free, other had to buy it. Those who were not online when a Living World season’s newest episode was released, have to later buy it. That’s how things are — anyone is always going to complain, but ANet has to make money somehow, no?

Thirdly, the only time this skill is truly useful is when you’re already in combat and want to get away. As a Necromancer with bonus health (Death Shroud), I don’t think this happens very often.

You are wrong. I am constantly rotating between dagger/warhorn, staff and Death Shroud on my new vanilla condi Necromancer with viper’s armor. Skills 4 and 5 (warhorn) are extremely powerful. The Locusts’ swarm does a huge load of damage, and I use it whenever I can.

Creating content that makes paying customers want to rage quit and uninstall isn’t exactly smart. But, by all means:

  • …continue giving us UGLY (harsh, but true) costumes instead of the new armor skins we’ve all been asking for.
  • …cover up a lack of game innovation by adding increasingly complex scavenger hunts.
  • …make the game more “challenging” by making entire floors hot lava (without cleaning up the interface to compensate for hordes of player models covering up all the “tells”.)
  • …continue making adventures and jumping puzzles that have zero-tolerance for error (oh, hey, I’m floating in the air on the edge of a cliff, but can’t jump over a tree root!)
  • …continue to increase the map complexity without fixing the map overlays (or giving us a means to actually SEE the map points we’re missing without consulting external maps.)
  • …continue producing content that REQUIRES a trip to a third party info website to figure things out.
  • …continue providing shortcuts to max level a character without unlocking a waypoint in each zone (yeah, I really want to map compete Lion’s Arch AGAIN.)
  • …continue to REFUSE to fix PvP matchmaking (but gate items behind PvP success.)
  • …continue making the game a farming grind (something it wasn’t at launch, and something you said it would never be.)

Yeah, I could always quit and play something else, but I’ve invested a lot of time and money into your enterprise. It’s time you started making your customers happy. I don’t expect everything to be easy, no… but is giving us a second option to complete a collection task all that much to ask? Heck, instead of giving us redundant items for daily log-in, give us a general token that can be saved and exchanged for collection items. That would be amazing! Or, better yet, a method for exchanging all the gobs of tomes and such we’ve all accumulated.

I agree with all of this wholeheartedly.

I had to watch a YouTube video for Sanctum Scramble, too, in order to be able to reach the required level of success (and I am far beyond the age of 12, but have still good reflexes thanks to playing a lot of shooters). As you said, without third party websites, one would be completely lost in GW2 (which includes lore and many other things). No game mechanics or anything important for a beginner are explained in-game, and with more advanced content it is only getting worse.

I really hope someone will take your list of valid points of criticism to heart. It’s about time.

Story missions too unfair for solo players

Story missions, especially those with bosses, are way too hard or unfair for solo players.

I can only think of one that falls into this category, and that’s “Hearts and Minds”. Everything else can be solo’d. Some missions are harder than others, yes, but still doable once you get the hang if it. The only difficult parts are some of the story achievements that are easier done with mates.

Ivanova (Claudia Christian) voices the female norn.

Woah, seriously?! :o That’s really cool, I had no idea.

Yes, but to this day I still wonder who gave her the directional order to make her combat noises sound (wait, I don’t think using this term is allowed on here, so let me try this instead) like sounds that you are only used to hear in the bedroom. It pretty much ruined playing my female norn for me (beside the fact that they move like jogging super models instead of warriors).

The CSS is in desperate need of a complete overhaul.

People should be able to customize it to their personal needs (for instance, a person with many characters will have different priorities than one with only a handful of chars).

Also, I heavily criticize the fact that the upcoming CSS for PoF will cover my characters’ feet and also have some weird orange and purple lighting. I would like to have a choice for those settings as well.

Flashy Gliders and Auras

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

The endless amount of flashy gliders and auras is starting to get a tad ridiculous, or rather, it has been for some time now.

I just logged in to make a post on this very issue, but you spared me the work.

There are far, FAR too many gliders that are not only obnoxiously large or only offer a gimmick in their existence, but the particle effects that these new items give off are absurd.

Yes, this exactly.

While some of those gliders per se look very well designed (although I wish one could have seen the actual clef on the Sheet Music Glider rather than having tons of paper covering it, then I might have purchased it), their insane size and effects are 100% unsuitable for a glider.

Most of your own view gets blocked while using those, which is unpractical. What’s even more obnoxious, though, is how people using those monstrosities are also blocking other people’s view, who happen to fly behind them! Having someone like that gliding in front of you not only irritates the eye but also makes it feel like driving a car while wearing a blindfold.
.

I get how ANet has developed a taste for the extravagant, they seem to enjoy exaggerating their designs to a degree where they become truly absurd (or downright ugly, in case of armor for instance). But impairing other players’ gameplay (e.g., when wearing some gigantic backpack while doing a jumping puzzle, so that the person behind you will miss their target because they can’t see kitten) is a true annoyance, to say the least.
.

P.S. Also, this:

I remember a time when particle effects were getting toned down across the game, Mesmer wells were more or less deleted, Ele Auras were gutted, heck even Rev skills were toned down. And for what? Only to go back on your design philosophy and start making your game look like an off brand generic MMO?

Wheres the cohesion of the items with the in game aesthetic? […]

ANET please, PLEASE consider moving away from these design choices. People will still buy good skins from the gem store if they’re not over the top and obnoxious. And more importantly, please don’t repeat this with mounts.

I second that plea.

Playing a toon of the opposite gender?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

Does anyone else feel uneasy playing a toon of the opposite gender, I do.

No, as an old school pen&paper role-player, I have no issue with this. Why do you? What do you care what others say? And why would you look upon a woman differently than you would look upon a man? Aren’t we all human beings?

That said, you don’t know if the person behind the male toon hitting on you might not be female. I have to admit, though: ever since GW2 became f2p, the amount of immature and/or offensive kids in this game has increased immensely. I never had to report as much unpleasant behavior before.

P.S. Also, no, in GW2 male characters are more “pleasing on the eye” than their female counterparts, because they don’t run around looking like action barbies (although most other newer MMOs are much, much worse in that regard). Which is why, as a female player, the majority of my characters is male. I don’t care about the gender, I care about the coolness factor — it’s called “role-playing game” for a reason.

And remove holosmith’s fx, and berserker’s fx too..
If this actually happens it will go on and end with all classes having no fx and a stupid amount of dev time would be wasted.

There are effects that are nicely done (like the Death Shroud or Berserker’s fire), and then there are effects that are giving you a severe headache and melting down your eyeballs (like the Holosmith’s).

And then there are effects like the Soulbeast’s that are just lame.

[Feedback] Voice acting + dialogue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashantara.8731

I’d have to disagree. There’s only been one instance of earbleedingly bad dialogue in HoT […]

I never said there was “earbleedingly bad dialogue” in HoT. I said that it’s where characters started talking ridiculously slow and over-pronouncing syllables! (Like. Take. Your. Time. To. Finish. Your. Sen-. -Tence. We. Are. Not. In. A. Hurry.)

As for bad dialogue, I just stated that the contemporary awfulness that followed was being set up in HoT, but not to the extent in which we heard it in Season 3 (where it was “earbleedingly bad”, no doubt).
.

For instance, I loved the male voice acting for the human player character in the core campaign. It was still okay in the follow-up seasons. In HoT, it was like someone gave the actor the following directions: “You need to slow down so that even preschoolers can follow you!”

In Season 3, the directions were extended by: “Please try to portrait an immature adolescent with a bubblegum accent, thank you!”

[Feedback] Voice acting + dialogue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

I saw no difference between the dialogue from the personal story and the LS3 episodes. You’re putting way to much emphasis on your dislike of contractions and so forth as you have already explained several times amongst the several other threads you created about this matter over the last few months.

The reason is that I am just playing through the HoT campaign for a fifth time, and the artificially slow pace and bad pronunciation (“Whershoe partner?”) and contemporary vocabulary etc. are striking me as extremely out of place and highly unpleasant again. I can’t enjoy the content as much as I would if we still had the same quality in the aforementioned departments (see my initial post).

Everyone saying they don’t hear the difference is either not paying much attention to dialogue or completely insensitive to the matter.

The overwhelming feedback from the early years on these very forums for core and LS1 was to improve the dialogue and VA quality. The VA and dialogue from those campaigns is of distinctly lower quality

Maybe in regards of what is being said, but not in how it is being said. That is the huge difference I am talking about!

[Feedback] Voice acting + dialogue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

I loved the voice acting for the core campaign (except for Trahearne’s, but that’s a seperate topic I do not wish to discuss here, as the devs are aware of what went wrong, so it’s pointless). The parlance (tone, vocabulary), the realistic intonation — everything was on point. It made you immerse into the world that is Tyria.

Then came HoT. Don’t get me wrong, I love its story campaign (and the maps have grown on me too over time), it’s my third favorite from all the story content provided thus far, and probably the most exciting regarding the way and pace in which it’s being told! But the way characters would talk changed drastically: the pace of speech in general, but especially for your player character, suddenly dropped to an artifically slow pace with over-pronounced syllables. It also started a new trend, which only got worse with LWS3 (see next parahraph).

Then we got Living World Season 3. Oh my, where should I start? It sported the same issue regarding the pace of speech and the artificially sounding intonation. But on top of that, half of the dialogue (for the PC and his/her companions in particular) didn’t even try to hide the use of contemporary slang anymore (of which we already saw hints in HoT, but not even close to this extent). That teenage slang and the constant use of sloppy contractions on one hand (e.g., “Whershoe partner?” for “Where is your partner?”), taking turns with the fake sounding tempo and the over-emphasis of each syllable on the other (almost robotic in its artificiality), ruin the whole feeling of listening to actual people and immersing into a real world.
.

tl/dr; Could we please have the same quality of dialogue and voice acting again like we used to in the old days? Normal pace, neat enunciation, and cultivated vocabulary and parlance?

Why are melee players punished?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashantara.8731

Even solo PvE favours melee. Zipping madly around a foe so they’re rarely facing the right way to hit you is one of the best forms of defence.

My vanilla build condition necromancer with viper’s equipment and a staff begs to differ. I am constantly switching between ranged and melee, but a lot of the time the long ranged staff gets the job done nicely in no time without my character getting hit by any AoE.

Why are melee players punished?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

The curse of GW2 is that you need to be flexible. For instance, as a warrior, I play a condition viper build where I can switch to the longbow if necessary in certain situations. However, as said warrior, I am doing the quickest (melee) DPS out of any other class that I also play as melee — therefore the enemy goes down in the blink of an eye (in comparison). Also, a warrior has powerful downstate skills which get you up and running again quickly.

Everything is being compensated that way. And as Sigfodr pointed out, learning the class skills and how/when to use which skill (also skill combos) is most important.

And as for my initial statement: the curse of GW2, furthermore, is that there are no real profession characteristics anymore. It’s one big blur of so-called “balancing” where pretty much every class does the same in the end, especially with more elite specializations being released. E.g., the new ranger elite spec fulfills many duties that I would see fit for a guardian, but not a ranger, namely providing boons; before that, the druid elite spec for ranger was also used for all sorts of support, when in my eyes a ranger is a fighter, not a supporter class… But hey, what do I know, right?
