PoF specs could end up overtuned to encourage people to play them, although given that each expansion is being sold separately rather than all being bundled together, maybe PoF elites will be on par with HoT elites because one way or another you’ll need to pay for at least one of the expansions to get access to the elite(s) you want.

Wait, what? As far as I know, new players who buy PoF additionally get the core campaign as well as HoT for free.

Dragon Stand empty?

Ashantara.8731

I have been to Dragon Stand on and off this entire week and yet every time I arrive the maps are empty and nobody is even there […]

Uhm, you do know that the event takes place on a meta map? So no wonder the normal map is empty.

You need to check the LFG and join an event squad minutes before the map event starts, then you will (most likely) be transferred to the same map as the rest of the people who are going to do the event.

The event takes place every two hours and is always well populated (most of the time, it’s full).

I believe you are mistaken. What was promised about choices was delivered. There was nothing about not innovating (changing) the way Stories functioned in the future.

Come on now, stop defending the fact that they have abandoned many great and promising game mechanics that would have made for a lot more variety and fun.

We have new Diving content with every Release. If you didn’t take advantage of swimming in Bitterfrost, that was your loss.

I did not miss out on anything, but that was one tiny bit in a long time. I am talking about real underwater adventures, not some boring diving and collecting of orbs.

I believe you stated another game was going to be your focus; but you were only gone a week. Did it not work out for you?

Best of luck on your gaming adventures.

I never stated anything like that, I merely said I would go look into other options. I never said I wouldn’t check out the last episode of LWS3. Also, I don’t recall being accountable to you about my abscence times from GW. What I criticized back then I still criticize (and am glad that many others do, too) and can only hope that future content will make up for it.

Class identity...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

I believe that many of the classes have lost much of their identity, as is typical of growing moms. Heavy armor means nothing, the typical tank these days is a mesmer. Guardians guard abilities mean nothing and are stripped instantly by a piddly Condi. Rangers pets are basically meaningless and rangers age forced into healing roles that were supposed to be covered by each classes personal healing ability. Many more examples exist that I’m not going to list…
I think elite specs are nice and all, but they really should enhance the core of a class or give an alternative method to the same core of the class. My question really is how do we get back to where we need to go from the chaos that we’re at? And what do people believe is at the core if each class in their mind?

I believe the problem are elite specs. They should rather have introduced new professions, like they did in GW1, then pervert the existing ones and ripping them of their identity.

Variations for existing professions could still have been established in other ways, but now it’s too late to do anything about it.

No one is going to force you to anything. All builds are and will be available at all times. Which ones will make it to the very top of the meta, however, is a different story.

I am currently enjoying my vanilla Necro build, because I have grown so tired of the Reaper. Also, the condition damage skills on vanilla Necs (Death Shroud, elite skill) are so much more fun when running a condi build!

Positive:

  • Riding the Raptor was a lot of fun (I think the attack range for its tail attack is bugged, btw).
  • Helping the Sous-Chef for a Mastery Point was a lot of fun. More content that doesn’t involve fighting is welcome.
  • Bounties: Great idea, but often interfere with other quests (see below).
  • Very nice designs, but the map’s layout is lacking something. I can’t put my finger on it right now.
  • Nice animations.
  • Enjoyable soundtrack.

Negative:

  • Not enough waypoints again. How about implementing the LWS3 Ep.6 mechanic?
  • Too much action (events, enemies, tasks) cramped into small areas. It results in a rather stressful gaming experience. Also, it often leads to tasks overlapping, getting into each others’ way, making it impossible to finish them properly (like collecting fish carcasses and fighting a champ at the same time?). Blitz events are not helping the matter, either. You just can’t enjoy the view or take proper screenshots, it’s almost entirely impossible.
  • Too many currencies and other means to acquire/unlock equipment again (caches, unidentified gear, map currency, etc.). Enough already!
  • Too many movement requirements also cramped into small areas, in terms of jumping puzzles: catching casino coins, trying to get to a vista, trying to unlock a POI, and so on. Stop it, please.
  • Got stuck in a wall again, this time when I used my S/A Revenant’s skill #4. Fix this annoying bug already, Anet!
  • So much this.

During the preview weekend, I did a hero point challenge to see how many points you will get, but they had deactivated the points being shown in the hero panel.

So, will it be handled like in HoT, with 10-15 points per? I assume that is very likely, as an approach similiar to the core game would require more maps…

Has anyone dig up some information on this?

POF and character slots

PoF standard does not come with a character slot. The HoT standard character slot was only for pre-purchases as a bonus and due to complaints at the time.

Also, keep in mind that HoT came with a new profession. PoF does not come with any new professions, hence for most people there is no need to add another character to the pool.

Well, your perception is your perception. I don’t doubt that you get stuck often, but outside of Oakheart’s Reach, I rarely see it happen (and most of those inside instances, where /stuck works like you’d like: it moves you).

When I got stuck during the LWS3 Ep. 6 story mission, after the Self-Doubt pushed me into a wall, /stuck did nothing for me. I had to start the whole mission over.

I don’t agree that the game needs more waypoints, especially if this is the only reason. I’d rather they do a better job of collision detection generally then apply any band-aids…

That’s what I would like to see, too, but then you argued that it would be too much work. Or maybe I misunderstood the intention of your response.

I wish there were more body types in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

It would be nice, but I think Anet is unlikely to do that for a cost vs benefit reason. It would mean modifying every single piece of armor and outfit. And Anet doesn’t have the greatest track record in the armor department.

ESO can do it because it has similarly proportioned humanoid races, whereas GW2’s Asura and Charr would require very extreme sliders. And probably result in even more Charr clipping complaints.

The “cost vs. benefit” argument/excuse by Anet is getting real old.

For instance, they already have male human bodies they could scale and add to the Norn body options, so not all male Norn must look like misshaped orangutans with tiny heads, while their female counterparts all look like supermodels with flawless bodies (even the heavier ones).

I agree with the OP that there should be a wider variety of options, and it would be more desirabe new content than most of the kitten they have added in the past year.

I really hope A.net adds to it or at least makes it less cramped before release. I’m already seeing people upset at what they’re seeing and feeling like this is an afterthought compared to the previous exclusive areas they’ve put out.

I couldn’t agree more, my thoughts exactly when I passed by that… flat wooden construct (a houseboat?) the other day. Very disappointing considering the price for the “Deluxe” content.

I do report using /stuck, but frustration has truly reached a level where I needed to vent.

You are right that there is no “one cause”, but at least they could introduce an unstuck function that allows you to port anywhere in a certain (not too large) radius in order to free yourself. Listing the level of difficulty to solve the issue in my honest opinon is only an excuse. This has happened far too often to me, in the past two weeks alone, to call it an unlucky conincidence.

P.S. If they are too busy to introduce a proper unstuck mechanic then they need to create far more waypoints in the new maps.

Unintentionally funny NPC names

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

It’s a fact that ArenaNet never checks whether specific names (like most of the Norn names, for instance) are spelled and pronounced correctly in the original English version. But I have also noticed that they seem to have a tendency not to check whether made-up names might actually have a (funny) meaning in other languages.

I have come across quite a few throughout the history of GW that made me crack up, because — pronounced in German — they actually had a certainly unintended meaning.

Here are my five favorites from GW2:

  • Eitel: eitel = vain
  • Geileis: geil = h*rny, Eis = ice
  • Harschaf: Haar = hair, Schaf = sheep; haarscharf = by a hair’s breadth
  • Kakifein: Kaki = khaki, fein = elegant; kackfein = (vulgar expression for) posh
  • Kakkilak: Kacke = poo, Lack = varnish

Have you encountered any in your language?

So, yesterday I got stuck in a wall once more, this time in the PoF demo using Frigid Blitz.

This is happening way too often, on all sorts of maps, using all sorts of mechanics that catapult your character forward — and seeing how the new PoF map has only one waypoint, I had to travel a looooong way to get back to the spot (it was during the HP fight in the northwest).

Can you please finally fix this issue? The game has been out for five years, it’s about time you invest resources into fixing bugs instead of introducing new things nobody needs (like unidentified drops and identification kits).

[Suggestion] Rangers need fitting armor!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

That’s sort of the thing. Thief gets all the design love for medium sets, generally.

They just don’t seem to know what to do with engineer or ranger, which is strange, because they have a whole previous game to draw upon.

I really hope PoF will have some fitting armor sets for those classes. I am sick and tired of either thiefish skins, some truly ugly ones, or futuristic ones that couldn’t be further off from the design of the game.

And just the other day, I was roaming Lake Doric when I saw a female NPC in one of the fighting rings to the southeast wearing a similar outfit (with pants) like the NPC in my link above.

I want those skins become available for my characters!

It really makes no sense to include an old GW1 mechanic in GW2 five (!) years after release. There were many great things about GW1 that deserve inclusion, this isn’t one of them. Why? Because we have the already expensive salvage kits (those from the store eat up my coin too), so introducing something that additionally drains my coin purse is a huge no-no.

Tip: If you don’t want to lose more players, do better with the story writing and personalized content. More requirements to grind won’t keep people in the game. A happy customer is a loyal customer.

Major Concern- Mounts and "motion sickness"

Then you should try some first person shooters that have head bobbing. Pure evil! At least, most let you deativate that game mechanic. Ack…

but I’m feeling a bit “off” when I use mounts.

How can something where you are zoomed out from your character give your motion sickness?

I’m fine with the mounts. The only annoying thing is the constant mounting and dismounting. But we’ll see how that works out.

The PoF Beta... what do you think so far?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

Got in… did the first part of the story on it… then found “mastery point”. Yay a mastery point, right there in the city. Oh wait… it’s more like a “heart”…. and super pain in the butt exercise that I finally gave up on. I’m not sure why this was implemented this way but I finally gave up on it… went out into the desert for a few minutes… and I haven’t been back.

Probably won’t be back until the update comes out. For me at this point, I’m not seeing a compelling reason to go back there. I spent a bundle on it so I suppose I’ll have to go there when it comes out just to try that Mastery Point again and ride some mounts. But for now, it’s back to the ‘old world’ and WvW for me.

Same for me. I was so bored yesterday that I have not bothered to return to the PoF preview today.

That was the lamest, least compelling introduction into a strory line I have seen in a computer game so far. But since Ellen Kiel’s office will open at release, I assume there will be more story to it. I also hope that what we have seen so far was not the introduction into the Crystal Desert, because it felt like, “So, we got you here, now see if you can find something interesting to do by yourself.” Yawn…

By the way, blitz events are not the way to make a map and story more compelling, either.

Character Name cleanup?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

The devs of City of Heroes did this twice. They sent out emails to all players a couple weeks before hand saying that all characters on accounts that had not logged in in over a certain amount of time (I believe it was something like accounts that were inactive over 2 years) would have their character names up for grabs. This way, if a player wanted to keep their names, they could log in in the weeks before the “names release” happened.

There is a huge difference between superhero names and normal (fantasy) names, with GW2 using the latter (except for some kids who think superhero or other comic-y names were “funny” or “cool”). I have 12 characters and never once had trouble naming one properly (only two of them use my old, reserved GW1 names, the rest I made up from scratch or used variations of fantasy character names I had made up before).

I don’t really see where the problem is. Maybe you need to start using your imagination instead of stealing names from famous novel, tv and movie, and even GW non-player characters? Just a thought.

now that we finally have an option to turn special weapon sounds off (or limit them), can we please get a similar feature for gliders to toggle?

I can’t stand the annoying SAB glider sound from people around me. Also, not a fan of some of my own glider sounds — for instance, the bat wings glider always gives me a major headache, because it sounds like a mix of a canvas in a storm and a freight train rolling, and it’s way too loud and hurting my hearing.

Hopefully,

@OP: First of all, everything you are praising about HoT is what made many players leave GW2. Not everyone is into verticality and constant bombardment with meta events.

That said, I find the first map plain boring as there is nothing to do but to explore and kill. Some excitement other than unnerving blitz events would have been nice, like investigating ancient tombs full of traps, puzzles, treasure and wonder.

P.S. I actually like the mount functionality, hope they are not going to exeggerate the whole thing like they did with travel mechanics in HoT and S3. Gliding and riding is enough for me, this game does not need more unnecessary platformer action.

Could one of the devs please respond to this?

I just used a make-over kit on my Revenant, who was originally of Canthanese heritage, to become a person with Elonian roots instead.

Now, I recall being asked during my personal story where my character’s roots lie, and I remember answering “My family is from Cantha, and proud of it” (or something along the lines).

I would like to know whether this choice was saved for this character in the database, making for possible consequences/choices in the future? If so, can the DB entry be altered?
