No. Your Character never left its order. Otherwise you wouldnt have access to the inner sanctum of your orders headquarters.

Exactly. We only resigned from our post as Pact Commander.

Because getting that little extra information for my lightbringer from other agents was a really cool part of the world building, if that will be gone in future because Anet cant handle a customizable protagonist ….. is kind of sad……

I would prefer to have a bit less story but small bits depending on your choices then having completly the same story with every character, where none of your decisions matters.

Amen to that.

Must you use a new jump mechanic every map?

Ashantara.8731

I don’t really care whether we get mounts or not, but if getting around looks like this:
1. get on fast mount for 10 seconds
2. get off mount – combat with my actual class abilities
3. get on climbing mount to get up a hill
4. now get on ravine jumping mount to glide over
5. get back on fast mount to get a little further
6. more combat…etc
It’s gonna get real old, real fast and people will just move on to another game.

Or are already moving on, because they know it’s going to be just like that.

The sheer amount of means of traversing areas has become ridiculous. Like many here, I don’t think mounts will fix the problem but rather add to it.

On the other hand, I can imagine the new target audience, kids and teens, having a blast with the direction Guild Wars 2: The Platformer Simulator is taking.

If the story telling needs you to go and read 10 articles on wiki to get the point of the plot, that story telling is a piece of crap.

I never said it was a good solution, I just said it was the only solution that we are left with. I will leave it to people to use their own judgment in evaluating that status quo.

Ashantara.8731

The problem is how do PvE players find out this info in-game (not in a raid which not everyone plays):

-Who is the White Mantle?
-Who are the Mursaat?
-Who is Lazarus?
Etc.

By doing lots of online research — the GW1 and GW2 wikis should be of help here.

Don’t get me wrong – I think that the basic LW concept is great as a way to keep an ageing game fresh – far better than only giving people new bits of map to go to and do more of the same. But it needs a coherent story plotted way ahead, that doesn’t just drop major threads with no more than a whimper because they’re “done with” and it’s time to move on to the next one.

I believe this paragraph sums it up nicely. The writing has grown increasingly amateurish, in coherence of content and quality of wording, and I think it is time for ArenaNet to hire a professional writer to fix this mess.

I do not like the so called comedy element, has it worked well for wildstar? GW2 was never silly, childish, stupid, daft … GW was serious with a little sarcasm, there is a line and i feel it has been crossed

…several episodes ago (but they still manange to beat their own record, which does deserve at least some respect ).

Yes, it’s pretty bad. Like I stated earlier (and was scolded for), the dialogue has reached a level suited for children (or people with very low demands).

Edit:

More stupid puzzles.

Actually, to me the puzzles were the only bright side to the whole ordeal.
__________________________________________________________

This episode:

  • I join a group I couldn’t care less about (which was decided in a matter of seconds) only so I could learn about what Livia is up to? Sure, that was very convincing, didn’t come across as forced at all. (Since Anet prefers explanation of the obvious: yes, I was being sarcastic).
  • Childish humor, bad dialogue — again. What a surprise! (Actually, it’s gotten worse, which I did not think possible, so maybe that was the surprise.)
  • Everything left open, no conclusion to the current story whatsoever. But let’s just cover up that fact by having yet another historical figure suddenly appear to “enrich” the story. (That worked, I didn’t even notice Braham et al weren’t present in this episode!)
  • So, apparently, you now need ley-line energy for everything in Tyria: powering waypoints, Asuran computers, Exhalted computers, even Gods, or cleaning up random toxic clouds (conveniently floating in a field of updrafts), and feeding the poor. Anet should start selling t-shirts stating “Ley-Line Energy = Life”, I am certain they would become a big seller.

So, the next expansion:

  • More Braham tantrums, yay!
  • More Balthazar. Yay?
  • More Taimi technology lectures and turning ancient myth into futuristic content.
  • More crazy maps cramped with updrafts, mushrooms, mounts (!) and a vast variety of parallel tasks that don’t make any sense other than filling the void of non-existent story-telling.
  • More references to player complaints by openly making fun of them, and of course ignoring people’s criticism.

“Tune in on August 1st!” — I don’t think so.

The only time I achieved to have all five songs active in that icon indicator above my character’s head was in the tutor area. And it did nothing special. So what is the point of that idicator exactly?

Then, these collectible music pieces seem to occur randomly all over the map. Why? How? What triggers them?

I am majorly confused about the functionality and actual point of these instrumental pieces.

I don’t have the time to read through five pages, so I am just going to say this: In WvW, it can get a bit frustrating when you can’t pick up your loot upon dying, especially when your squad goes down as well and then doesn’t return to the location (so you can’t pick it up afterwards, either). • no limited content for buyers (nothing needs to be unlocked via store)
  • pretty nice graphics (environment, characters, vivid colors)
  • okay character editor (wouldn’t mind it being upgraded, though)
  • handy LFG system

Game Mechanics

  • accurate movement

  • relatively few glitches
  • decent character animations
  • good ragdolls
  • easy grouping system (parties, squads)
  • great dye system

  • convenient death system
  • very good in-game service accessibility (storage etc.)

Game Support

  • excellent support team (best I have seen for any online game)
    __________________

CONS

General

  • no tutorial, new players are forced to do extensive research by consulting various websites and asking other players
  • inconsistencies (especially regarding shop item unlocks, ascended and legendary crafting, and other stuff)
  • breaking the game’s style by adding more and more futuristic designs (weapon sets, armor sets, outfits, story gadgets)

Game Mechanics

  • weapons undyeable
  • very bad terrain meshing (i.e., walkable spaces/paths)
  • many of the new travel methods (gliding, mushrooms, Oakheart essence) still have glitches, some more severe than others
  • boring skill system (individualization very limited)
  • extremely rigid meta

Gameplay

  • constantly new bugs
  • story 100% monotonous (“Just follow your log.”), no choices given
  • no personalized quests (race, personality or profession don’t provide any individualized content)
  • low replayability (due to the two aforementioned factors)
  • constant additions of new means of travel are getting out of hand
  • bad implementation of PvP (fairplay nearly impossible)
  • bad WvW system (boring, because “Don’t think, just follow your Commander!”, and unlike PvP requires extra equipment)
  • dungeons not made to scale with group size
  • no new dungeons
  • raids also quickly become repetitive
  • game has become too grindy (especially with newer content)

Game Support

  • very slow bug-fixing (only majorly game-breaking ones seem to be addressed at all)

There is no "living world" in GW2

in Living World

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

Your choices don’t matter

Race, profession, personal background, and personality choice don’t matter.

Profession only matters in combat, everything else is merely cosmetic and/or an abandoned child. We have two full-fledged campaigns and three so-called “living world” seasons, and yet those choices only matter in a very small portion of that overall content.

Once you step out into the world to fight dragons, you are as replaceable as the tires on your car. It doesn’t matter who you are and where you come from, the dialogue and storyline remain 99.99% the same for everyone. Neither does the story and the dialogue vary depending on your race, nor are there any more racial-specific quests, let alone profession-specific ones. And don’t even mention personality-specific paths that could make for a unique experience in this game.

All that minimized the replayability enormously. The first time is exciting, the second time might be fun, too, but then it becomes 100% repetitive.

That said, they could have just left it like it was in GW1, where you could only play humans, it wouldn’t make a difference in GW2. The dialogue fits only human characters anyway, and maybe asuran too to a certain extent, but it absolutely doesn’t fit a norn, charr, or sylvari outside of their initial racial storyline.

-

Everything is frozen in time

Your character’s progress doesn’t matter at all when you roam the lands of Tyria. Everything remains always the same as the last time you passed through that township or desert or jungle. NPCs won’t react differently to you. Things you have already accomplished don’t seem to affect any areas in the slightest.

You cleansed Orr, defeated two elder dragons, yet people on these maps are still terrified of the undead and of Zhaitan, and there are still Mordrem worshipping a still very alive Mordremoth. Who cares? — You saved Logan from a terrible fate and helped him move on and away from his Queen, but he is still residing in Divinity’s Reach the next time you enter the building and doesn’t recall any of this? Of course!

There is nothing “living” about this world.

-

Even festivals are 100% frozen in time

I don’t think I must explain much about festivals. We only have a handful, and those are repeated over and over again, year after year.

They were fun and exciting the first time around, but then they become boring like the rest of the content. “Been there, done that.” — This title reflects all you need to know about GW2 in its current state.

Instead of developing new festivals each year, or at least a nice variation of the existing ones to bring some diversity into the picture, we have exactly the same problem as in GW1: everything remains the same, always.

-

GW2 is no RPG

In most MMOs, the label “RPG” is falsely used to describe the fact that you have characters you can level, that you have a crafting system, and the likes.

That is not what RPGs are about. If you have ever played pen & paper RPGs, or great, classy computer RPGs like the Elder Scrolls or the Dragon Age series, you know the difference.

In a RPG, you have interaction with characters, you make choices, and those choices matter and shape the progress of your story. You don’t have that in GW2, and in that regard it is exactly the same as GW1: an online multiplayer action game, nothing more, nothing less.

-

Contemporary language

In the past couple of years, GW2 has moved away from coming accross as a serious fantasy setting with fitting designs and dialogue; instead it has developed a tone that makes it sound more and more like you were wandering the halls of a junior highschool.

Go into the Divinity’s Reach home instance and compare the NPC chatter there with recent dialogue. ’Nuff said.

-

PVP is no fun, because…

The whole skill concept of GW2 has flaws. The way elite specializations have been implemented did not help and has been a hot topic ever since, because of the imbalance and the very rigid meta that resulted from it.

Now, I love the concept of PvP, but the rank system is a joke, because in your (higher) rank you will often find people who still play like this was the first time they ever entered a ranked match. Add the imbalance caused by the completely random composition of teams and the resulting unfair advantage for one side (as you can’t even decide with whom you want to team up before a match), and you can forget about PvP.

It really is no wonder that there is such a high toxicity to be found in PvP.

More story paths would cost more than fewer story paths. Seems pretty logical to me that X * 5 > X (where x is tbe cost of one story path).

Okay, now think for a second. If you cut the overall content in order to produce more variety in the existent content, that evens it out. How hard is it to understand that? I’m really beginning to wonder here…

Killing Jennah isnt the first time and wont be the last one we’ll see. Jennah needs a king in order to the Krytan Royal blood line will move on.

Yes, this has become quite a running joke. Anet seems to love the infinite repetition of things — they go on and on and on… until it gets so annoying that you stop taking them seriously.

So, to answer your question: At some point there must be a revelation of some sort, otherwise it would just add to the many things on Anet’s plate that never get taken anywhere and just die in the process.

All legendaries are “timegated”, if you don’t produce the four ascended ingredients daily by default. That’s why they are legendaries, they aren’t easy to get and cost a lot of materials. That’s the challenge and fun part about them (although I would argue that the actual fun part are the two scavenger hunts included in the “legendary journey”).

Which leads me to the topic of boredom again, because people are shifting their focus to all sorts of stuff in this game to do instead of playing the game, because its replayability isn’t too thrilling (and that’s putting it mildly). Focusing on the market (and playing it as an ecomony simulator) is just one of the things you can do instead. Others focus on collecting legendaries or creating more characters in order to experience the first part of the game (the personal story) in a new way.

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

One thing I bothers me is that unlike the personal story and season 2, this story did not feel epic. It felt out of proportion to the threat Mordremoth posed. Also, I understand that with deaths that occurred during the story it ended on a somewhat solemn note, but defeating Mordremoth should have felt at least a little victorific.

That’s because the actual fight in the physical realm is taking place in the Dragon’s Stand map’s meta event, where you have a more epic experience of defeating Mordremoth.

In Hearts and Minds you only break the power Mordremoth has over his subjects (Sylvari for most part).

You have yet failed to explain how a change of racial skills would improve story telling.

You are hung up on that strawman of yours… NO ONE has made any such claim that changing racial skills would improve story telling. The suggestions to improve racial skills and to improve story telling by making your race, background, class, etc… matter are TWO ENTIRELY SEPARATE CONCEPTS.

1) Improving racial skills and making a racial skill slot makes your choice of race feel more impactful and meaningful in general content as you can actually make use of your racial skills without sacrificing build performance.

2) Improving story telling by making your race, background, class, etc… have meaning in the story again (how it was in the early part of the vanilla story)… would have a profound impact on the quality of the story. Our “personal story” would actually be personal again.

Two related but separate ideas. There is ZERO need to “explain how a change of racial skills would improve story telling,” because that was NEVER a part of the suggestion to begin with. You called it out as a strawman when you brought it up in the first place, but the truth is, you created the strawman with that very same breath.

Thank you, Panda, you spared me the typing.

On the one hand I think that a greater personalization of the story could be fun.

On the other hand I am firmly of the belief that the increased costs of essentially writing multiple variations of the story, at least one per race (and why not per class or temperment?) would lead to a massive reduction of storytelling in the game.

You are confusing “content” with “story-telling”. I’d gladly have “less content” if it meant that the content I got had more diversity and was replayable without causing boredom.

Dragon's Stand lane balancing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashantara.8731

Ashantara.8731

I’ve seen both mid and north go fastest. My experience says north is faster most of the time

I am usually commanding mid, and we are always first.

But it really doesn’t matter, because the point being:

South is always far behind.

This.

South is also almost always the last to down their boss in the tower as well due to Axemaster being so much tougher than the others, adding insult to injury.

(I also find the entire blighted tower fight “run your zerg in a continual circle for 10-15min” to be horrible design, but that is another topic)

The blighted tower doesn’t take long, really, if only the newbies would learn to read the chat! The problem is (besides the fact that the person commanding south doesn’t have any time to properly explain that part of the event!) that there are many players (mostly kids) who refuse to join the squad (and keep insulting Commanders and other players when they urge them to join), hence can’t read the squad chat — and when the event fails, it’s of course the Commanders’ fault.

  1. In the tower’s circle, Preservers spawn (and some newer Commanders miss to mark their location) who heal the Collector sacks. The Collectors, when alive, are healing the boss.
  2. Subgroup 1 needs to stack up close on the Commander, circle with her/him and kill the Presevers, while Subgroup 2 circles and kills the Collectors in the first run, then goes to the center in order to kill the boss.

Now, this event often fails because

  • Subgroup 2 either runs center right away and attacks the boss without having killed all the Collectors first,
  • Subgroup 2 doesn’t feel responsible for killing the Collectors again should they respawn,
  • Subgroup 1 fails to stack up close, scatters, then dies, because no one has speed boosts for the group equipped.

As a Commander you simply can’t get those things under control when there are people ignoring the chat/unable to read the chat and you don’t have enough time to explain those things to the new players. Therefore, instead of just “balancing” the lanes, they need to add an additional ready check for all lanes before the gates open for the Commanders to have time to explain said details.

Glad to see some people agree. It shows that there are people who prefer good story-telling and variety to boring linearity and simplicity.

Let me quote myself from another thread:

Another problem is the boredom that derives of the fact that things that were initially in the game, and that represented a great foundation for diverse, personalized story-telling, were completely abandoned in future content: the choice of race and character background, the implementation of “personality” — they were all there, but instead of expanding on that, everything was linearized, thus simplified, and the focus was put on other things that just can’t make up for the lack of variety (bouncing mushrooms, grinding maps,…).

Even the nay-sayers here can’t deny that race (like every other choice that initially made your character unique) has zero influence on anything anymore these days.

You know what I did these past couple of months out of sheer boredom? I started collecting legendary weapons I don’t need to feel like I was playing some “unique” content, and making new characters I don’t need of professions I already have only so I could play through different personal story options in order to experience that thrill of feeling like my choices during character creation somehow matter.

I believe many people have more than nine characters (one for each profession) for that very reason. It is the only part of the whole story (from two campaigns and three LW seasons!) that actually makes you feel like your race etc. matters. What a waste of potential in this game!

Race should matter! A short rant.

Where does anyone say “force” you to use racial skills? I must have missed that part.

Mid is actually fastest. But yes, you have a point there regarding a certain imbalance.

As a Commander, I prefer being at the gate first, because that leaves me with enough time to instruct the newbies about the tower event. Unfortunately, if you are commanding the south lane and happen to have a lot of newbies in your squad, it makes for a very stressful experience.

The game doesn’t make you feel, it doesn’t truly touch you and excite you (not anymore). It’s just fighting one big bad after another….

I wonder though if part of the problem with an unexciting story line lies with the original choice of antagonist. Which is elder dragons that are portrayed more like forces of nature than thinking, scheming creatures. There’s only so much one can do with a story about battling a force of nature. By itself the plot is going to be linear and simplistic, since a dragon has limited ways to twist and turn the plot. That’s maybe why they brought in the White Mantle so there can be betrayal and human motives, but that’s only part of the main, linear plot. imo they’d be better off getting rid of the ‘elder dragons eating magic’ plot line as soon as possible and bring in plot lines that can have more depth.

Well said. I 100% agree with your sentiment.

Quoting myself from another thread:

You know what I did these past couple of months out of sheer boredom? I started collecting legendary weapons I don’t need to feel like I was playing some “unique” content, and making new characters I don’t need of professions I already have only so I could play through different personal story options in order to experience that thrill of feeling like my choices during character creation somehow matter.

I believe many people have more than nine characters (one for each profession) for that very reason. It is the only part of the whole story (from two campaigns and three LW seasons!) that actually makes you feel like your race etc. matters. What a waste of potential in this game!

When they said they would stop producing content for GW1 (which was never an MMORPG but an action online multiplayer game) because they came to realize its limitations as to what they can do, therefore had decided to start working on GW2 instead, most players were thrilled over the prospect of playing a real Guild Wars MMORPG in the future.

Then they basically did the same to GW2 after its release: they stopped developing the aspects that make for a great MMORPG and started focusing on action aspects only — the only difference between GW1 and GW2 currently being that now we can jump, glide and fly, and soon even ride through the mobs.

Would you buy it if you haven’t? Do you like items like these?

No, and no.

Outfits that aren’t some robotic freak of nature.
How do you feel about fashion wars 2?

The same.

I agree with you on – I think GW2 has long since lost its sense of identity when it comes to aesthetics and has succumbed to a much more wacky and cartoony style than even its predecssor.

This is especially true. I have criticized it myself for a long time. Either we get completely silly items (like the legendary candelabra or those “hats”) that fit the increasingly childish tone of the game (dialogue etc.), or we get armor and weapon sets that look like out of some sci-fi movie, but certainly don’t fit a classic fantasy setting. Awful.

The last really good item in the Gem Store was the Mercenary Backpack, the last good armor or weapon set… well, I don’t even recall.

The slot now says “((691522))”

Perhaps a partial fix from today’s text-only update? -

Yes, saw that last night and had a laugh. Someone must have really screwed up the database entry.

The new 'Victory' screen is a step back

I do not enjoy humiliating the enemies (because frankly that is what new victory screen as) more than we already do.

If they simply removed the dead bodies of the defeated team, that would solve the issue. The important thing is that now you can look at your stats at the end of a match without being attacked all the time.

New victory screen is terrible.

Agree it does not send a good message. I love the idea of a victory/defeat screen with some statistics about the match, Firstblood, first cap, least deaths, dps, heals, etc…
But this ‘celebration screen’ was poorly designed..

You are force to look at them BM..
I like to check my stats at end of game, seeing my dps/kills/revives/etc and the victory screen only adds to the toxicity of PvP.

Okay, from that angle I do agree. But it’s still a lot better than before, where you couldn’t look at the final stats in peace because of aggressive monkey attacks.

Founder Mike O’Brien did not leave.

Yes, my bad. The others did, making him the only original founder left. Maybe that’s part of the problem?

I don’t know, it’s just that I feel that the game has nothing more to give, while it could have been so much more. It’s one big “same old, same old” with no variety whatsoever.

For some reason, the devs believe that adding jumping mushrooms and oakheart essences makes for variety, but it does not. The game doesn’t make you feel, it doesn’t truly touch you and excite you (not anymore). It’s just fighting one big bad after another, with no real personal involvement in the story, no personalized content based on race and background story, no nothing that makes for an exciting RPG experience.
