Will the next expansion be discounted?

Some of you need to stop begging for more freebies and discounts on a game that has $0 in monthly access fees.

If some of you want some super deal then wait a year after the next xpac launches.

It’s like nobody buys anything on the gem store to support the game, right?

The expansion should not cost the same for existing players as it does for new players if the new players get everything existing players paid for. There’s not really any ethical way around that. And yes, new customers should get LS unlocked. It’s a big part of the content.

New players do not get everything that veteran players paid for.

Thank you for sharing I was just curious about other peoples experience, and was expressing mine so far if anyone have an issue with that well maybe they should not post here.

I have not seen anyone express an issue with your decision to express your experience. They may not share that experience, may consider it to be atypical, but that is very different than suggesting that someone, “should not post here.”

The reason why SOME people are less “friendly” in HoT is because the content is harder and not everyone is good at typing and playing. It’s easy to type in core tyria, because you’re not as ;likely to die when you do. That has nothing to do with friendly. It has to do with the ability to communicate while in danger.

Plenty of friendly people in HOT who just don’t type well.

I did not say friendly I said toxic, perhaps you missed that part?

Exploring hot and helping with basic masteries? I have to be honest so far in my experience it has not been that freindly and it is hard to find a guild that will run through it with you.

“How friendly has the community been”

Actually yes, you DID say friendly. It is in both the topic title and the original post. Toxic is not used in either. As Vayne replied to the topic, by not quoting a specific subsequent post, he was on topic.

I have a few theories about why people might reply to call outs in HoT less frequently than they might in core maps.

1) increased challenge. Its hard for some people to type while fighting for their character’s lives in a zone where mobs are able to actually kill a PC. In core tyria going afk, alt tabbing, or just chatting/responding to map calls are much safer options because some mobs just can’t do much to your character even if you are not actively playing.

2) Increased mob density. Fewer spots to safely park your character where he will be safe while you are exchanging messages.

3) Distances. If someone calls out for help with an event on the other side of a HoT map there is a good chance that it will all be over and done with by the time I can get there.

4) Navigation. Really part of #3. If I am going to have difficulty even finding my way to the other guy how can I help him?

There are just some people who can’t tolerate anybody pointing out truisms from HoT.

I personally dislike HoT and tend to avoid it, but expressing a personal opinion about the expansion does not make that opinion a truism.

How many people expecting a discount on the next product release because they bought the last give their employer a payroll discount on this year’s pay because they were paid last year?

With the new expansion, will Anet avoid HoT?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

I was wondering after the HoT aftermath and the damage it did to the game and player population, will Anet have the strength to forget HoT and move on?

What went wrong with HoT, IMHO, and should never be repeated:

01. Pricing the expansion as the full game for players already owning the original game
02. DLC worth of new content, not worthy of expansion name
03. Rushed and short story mode, with a really underwhelming final battle design.
04. Questionable map design, not the beauty of HoT maps, just usability. Minimap system is not enough for HoT layout.
05. Lack of new character slot for the new profession (remedied after an outcry from players).
06. Killing the casualness of the original Guild Wars 2 in more than one way and thus making maps either extremely hard or right down impossible for solo completion.
07. Nerfing the older content, all in hope player base will be forced to buy into deeply flawed new one.
08. Essentially killing off PvP with tying it to the expansion.
09. Nearly destroying WvW which survival is still up in the air.
10. etc.

1) a company charging for the product that they spent vast sums of money producing is not a bad thing. I do have to wonder if those supporting the OPs argument give their own employer a discount on this year’s paycheck because the employer paid them last year. Do you work for free, or half wages this year because your employer paid you last?

2) seemed like a decent amount of content to me. Remember that a HoT purchase includes the LS3 zones as well.

3) the entire expansion, every zone, incljding events, meta, etc are part of the story mode.

4) yes, hard to navigate for me too. Doesnt make the design questionable, just means that you (and I) dont like it.

5) I agree, and said so at the time of release.

6) I am an extremely casual player and do not find HoT very hard, nor impossible, to solo. There is a difference between casual and unwilling to learn.

7) you have yet to demonstrate, or support, any claim that the expansion was deeply flawed, as you put it. There is a difference between, “I do not like something,” and it being truly flawed. This is especially true in the entertainment field.

8) how so?

9) how so?

10) this is the most cogent and coherent argument in the entire list.

Maybe some day people will learn that they are not the center of the universe and that them not liking something does not make it bad, flawed, or somehow universally wrong.

All of this from someone who does not like HoT either, but who recognizes that doesnt make it bad. I dont like hip hop, rap, most pop music, country music either. That doesnt mean that those artists should all stop making their prefered styles of music in order to accommodate my tastes. Nor should restaurants stop serving seafood, or using mayonnaise, or serving iced tea.

Norn aren’t exactly known for working together, either.

That seems to be a predominantly human, charr, and sylvari trait.

Norn do not need to work together. Each one, individually, can eat a lot of beer nuts.

Ive, on multiple occasions now, seen individuals and guilds doing guided tours, offering portals through jumping puzzles, etc.

Ive also seen players stop whatever they were doing to help someone who called out in map chat.

And, of course, I have seen players treat others poorly for not knowing how to run an event, meta, etc.

More good than bad in my perception.

But we already have that, its called Human

that makes no sense from a genetic point of view, especially since Norn boys look as “normal” as their girls.

It totally can make sense, puberty and other hormonal changes can theoretically cause the shape of growing bodies to change dramatically. It’s a stretch in this case, but making statements like this just makes it obvious you know jack kitten about genetics.

Look. No need to insult me for not being a biologist. The last time I was confronted with the basics of genetics, it was in high school about a quarter of a century ago.

Still, I doubt it is very “realistic” for a whole humanoid race to have males look that far off from their female counter-parts, especially when they look 100% identical before puberty. And in particular since all other humanoid races on Tyria sport similar characteristics between their two genders. (And frankly, I have traveled the real world quite a bit and have never spotted any such grave physiological differences between men and women in any of the corners of our beautiful planet, either. Characteristics like basic bone structure, height etc. are usually being shared physiological characteristics for the respective region.)

That’s apples to oranges.

You’ve traveled the real world but you’re only looking at one species. Humans. Norns may look like humans but they are not human. (Norns are native to Tyria and humans were brought over from a different planet). Norns are a separate species (humans and Norns can not interbreed) and males/females of a species can look similar as adolescents but markedly different as adults.

True, but he was responding to someone using real world justification for their views on the matter.

I think the person you quoted was less on about why you play games (or why rewards may or may not be desirable), but why you play this MMORPG.

Well… because it suits me very well, and I think it’s an awesome game. I’m not trying to salvage a game that I think is broken. I’m trying to suggest a way to make a great game even better. And it doesn’t have to be through ANY sort of an item treadmill at all. The suggestion I made in the last post was to have stats that can only go so high (and never higher). But place a tiny portion of those stats in T4 fractals and the first raid wing.

You still have your ETERNAL stat-ceiling. But you also have a small incentive to push yourself through content that requires a lot of effort. So, the example I gave was that, if the highest you can get your unbuffed power was 3027… put gear accounting for 25 points of that total in T4 fractals, and gear accounting for 25 points of that total in the first raid wing.

And, if somebody chose not to do either, they’d still be practically identical to someone who did (and capable of all the same encounters). Then, if an expansion comes out, the stat-ceiling is STILL 3027. But 25 points worth of it is found in some of the new content as well (i.e. more options to do the same thing). Hardly a “gear treadmill.”

For pete’s sake, now the post is below this one. Geez, silly forum.

Sorry, I double-posted and had to delete/repost.

What would you do after you had earned the 25 points in the first raid wing and the 25 points in fractals? How would you expect to continue to be rewarded?

If horizontal or cosmetic rewards will not mitivate you, if playing for the fun of playing is insufficient (I dont fault you for this as I like to feel rewarded for my efforts as well), in short, if only power increase however small, will make you feel rewarded for playing, and if you need to feel rewarded to have fun…then how will a one time reward, now, keep you going?

It’s kind of frustrating to see that med and light wvw armor looks better than medium and light Legendary armors.

I sincerely hope the devs revisit leg armors and make improvements with player feedback.

The thing is that not all skins will appeal to all players. While you may prefer the WvW ones, others may not. Feedback, while useful, likely wouldn’t matter as much in this case when it’s based simply on players’ differing preferences.

The devs could easily create concept drawings for us to discuss and vote on… not hard to get the playerbase involved in legendary gear and weapons matters.

And if the existing skin had won?

Answer the question, don’t ask me hypotheticals.

You, while positing a hypothetical situation, insist that others not ask you hypothetical questions?

Really?

I think all of the old Infinity Tools should also get the unbound Magic Gathering.

I just got the new set of tools and its really lovely, however i see no reason for people to buy any of the old sets now.

I have got quite a collection of tools (Trying to get all my caracthers with a diferent set of infinity tools) but i cant help to feel that feels silly the old sets not giving the unbound Magic as well.

Hope u adress this soon as there will be no reason for players to get any of the older tools and that feels like a waste to me.

I bought infinity tools (Consortium Scythe, Molten Pick, Nightmare Axe) back in season one before they introduced the watchwork axe. And I’m still somewhat miffed that they haven’t done anything retroactively to make old tools more appealing.

I did the same. It never has realy upset me, but it has made me cautious about buying things in the gemstore.

To me, it sounds a bit like cutting one’s nose off to spite one’s face. Or, perhaps, throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Then I did a horrible job of expressing my thoughts on the matter and apologize.

I suppose it really comes down to wanting the ability to hold my wallet up as an incentive for a merchant to address my desires as a consumer. If they already have my money it seems possible that they are less likely to care about those concerns. So I, generally, do not prepurchase games any more. I wait until they are released so that I can get a non-hyped sense of the game before buying.

That said, I do believe in supporting a company which produces a product I enjoy. I have spent significantly more on GW2 than I would have on a sub based game. I would probably spend more if the art direction for the gemstore weapon sets was more appealing to me.

Ok where does this say masteries will be hidden behind Mini Games?

“To train a specific Mastery track, you must first unlock it by spending Mastery points. Mastery points are awarded for completing various pieces of game content. Things like completing a chapter in your personal story, completing certain achievements, reaching hard-to-find locations, overcoming challenging encounters, excelling at adventures found within the Heart of Maguuma, or earning 100% completion for a map will award Mastery points. Each Mastery point can be earned once per account, so while Mastery points allow you to unlock Mastery tracks, they are also an indicator of how much of the game you’ve experienced. In fact, once you have unlocked the ability to train Masteries, your nameplate will display the number of Mastery points you have gained rather than your level. Mastery points can be gained at any level but cannot be spent until level 80.”

Also when I pre-purchased Heart of Thorns I’m pretty sure this wan’t available (not that I would have picked up on mini games from this description) since I ordered day 1 of being available.

Hopefully you will not prepurchase in the future. Wait, see if it matches your preferences, and then buy.

And that solves the issue regarding “Masteries” how? Whether I pre-purchase or don’t doesn’t have anything to do with Masteries hidden behind mini games.

I understand the thought behind it (don’t give them your money if you don’t like it) but I love the main theme of the game I just want to get my opinion thoughts out there so hopefully they won’t make the same mistakes (again my opinion) on the new expansion.

Thanks Ashen

You opened your post with a question about where Anet advertised masteries as being hidden behind minigames and closed with commentary about what was said when you prepurchased HoT. Everything in between was quoting someone else. My post was not intended to solve, retroactively, your issue with masteries. I responded to what you said, not to an issue perhaps raised in another post or something of the sort.

As to how my point might address similar situations in the future:

Prepurchasing insulates the company from consequences, at least in the short term, of their decisions. By giving them your money without knowing what the product will be in its release form you have financed those development decisions that you dislike (hate, despise, etc). A complaint on the forum, in hopes of change, generally, will not have the same impact as a decision to not buy until after desired changes have been made.

A player base that says, in effect, “we have given you our money up front, product sight unseen, and you have no reason to believe that we won’t do so again, but we don’t like feature X,” is likely to have less impact than a player base saying, “you have to prove that your product is worth our money before you are going to get it.”

I believe the people saying the map is dead are trying to use that to give emphasis to their own negative opinion of HOT without regard for what’s actually happening on HoT maps.

I believe that at least some of the complaints happen because ANet’s mega-server algorithms quite literally kill the map. Sometimes the closing-map experience can chain. Ironically, it’s less likely to chain when there are fewer map copies to begin with.

I don’t know how much time you spend in HOT but I literally have been in HoT for 30 hours within the past week and I have yet to find a single dead map, without using LFG at all.

I’ve been helping new guildies get their elite spec unlocked among other things.

I’m not saying there are a million people at every event, but there are very very few events where there aren’t people enough to do the events. This doesn’t equal a dead map.

I’m specifically taking note of what I’m doing and when due to the claims of certain posters. The assertion that the zones are dead are pretty much wrong. The only time I’ve encountered a dead zone recently was when I didn’t reboot right away and a bunch of other people did. Aside from that, dead zones are the exception not the rule.

Edit: As an example, right now I’ve done the entire scar lane event chain with strangers. We’re on the next to last event. There are five of us. There are a lot of events in this zone. Not sure how anyone could call this dead. No LFG, no changing maps. Just happened upon it.

Just last night I was in a VB map and got the “Map is closing” message. That’s what I mean by a map that mega-server algorithms are killing — by closing. Psychologically, that map is perceived as dead. When that experience chains, it creates a perception. If you want to counter perception, it helps to understand what is being perceived, and why.

This.

More often than not when I log into a HoT map I get that message. It does affect perception of the map.

I hope legendary armour is NEVER accessible outside of raids. It’s a proper endgame content with a proper reward. Take it out and people have no reason to improve themselves…again.

Personally, if ANet caters once again to the playerbase who refuses to improve their personal skill and wants everything handed to them by making the legendary armour available through different means, I will be quitting the game in a heartbeat.

They have been catering to these players for years now, and for once, it seems like they are taking a different approach. It’s a welcome change, and something they should continue to work towards. The playerbase will never improve if all ANet does is cater to their whining the moment they introduce something slightly difficult.

I agree. Legendary armor should be removed from raids, and deleted from raider’s accounts, and be earned solely by making top three in a spvp tournament.

We really need instanced maps to ban toxic people like in pvp.

I read the OP and the part you quote pretty clearly says that he waited until the zerg had left before doing the event himself. They had gone. They were no longer playing that event and yet wanted to control how others played it, or attack others for not playing it according to their preferences.

I mean I am not even logged into the game right now so I should be allowed to attack others for going to Orr at all while I am away right?

It might be worth noting that, in cases like this, no response is a response. The devs didnt bury the thread, the player base did. The armor is intended only for the small portion of the player base who raids. Only a portion of raiders would aim for medium armor, and only a fraction of those dislike the armor.

So, a fraction of a fraction of a small fraction of the player base wanted changes to something that took over a year to develop. Anet chose to ignore the desire.

Again, though, you’re assuming that it’s a minority of the minority that are unhappy about the medium armor.

Taking legendary out of the context, Reddit, the forums, map chat and discord channels have had thousands of people talking throughout the last couple of years about how disgusting the trench coat notion is becoming – and then we get a legendary armor that looks like the Light Masquerade armor in size, pretty disgusting that they chose to ignore 2 years worth of feedback.

Going back to the context, legendary armor as it stands, is not bad in any way, it looks great, it just needs to be fine-tuned. I personally think Medium has one of the best before and after combat animations out of all three, it’s just too clunky.

No assumption on my part.

The armor is only available via raids. Raids are intended, as stated by Anet in the past, for a minority of players. Of that minority of players not all will dislike the armor (as some stated that they like it in the original feedback thread). And that doesn’t even take into consideration that not all raiders will care about medium armor that they won’t use.

If only a fraction (however large that fraction may be) of an intended minority of the player base dislike the armor, which took more than a year to release, then Anet may decide not to invest even more resources into the set.

I don’t like the trenchcoat design…have said as much many times over the years…but that doesn’t change the facts at hand.

Plus he gearing aspect.

The ONLY viable Condition Stat combination is Viper. The ONLY one. With Zerk it was the same, but since Viper sets are HoT’s, that means you can’t just find them anywhere, buy them off the TP or Karma: You must craft them (and they are highly expensive), find them as ascended gear (and don’t go saying converting is cheap, for players who didn’t level crafting before it’s gonna be one hell of a ride anyways) OR make incredibly weird stuff like finishing HoT story on 3 characters, then farming map achievements for the rest…

So, it’s not only better than zerk, it’s also way more inaccessible to the general population.

You are mistaken regarding Viper being the only viable condi stat combo. Did you mean optimal or something of the sort rather than viable?

I’m not mixing them up. You’re focusing solely on one aspect of them, which may or may not matter to someone over the visuals, and claiming it to be better because of it.

Not claiming. It is a fact. The new tools are objectively, demonstrably, better.

When you focus solely on the bonus UM, while ignoring everything else, they are. When you include everything else, that’s not necessarily true as it’ll vary from person to person.

I have no idea how else to explain this.

They are functionally better, gathering more units in less time than the other tools
They are mathematically better, having faster animations than other tools
They are mechanically better, gathering extra materials than other tools
They are cheaper, costing overall less than other full sets of tools.

These are not opinions. These are measurable facts.

You can call the same thing however many different ways that you want but that is just one aspect to the tools which goes towards its value.

You can obfuscate as much as you like, but it is clear that a tool with a gathering buff is functionally superior to a gathering tool without. Given the choice between two similarly priced tools with the same cosmetics, one with and one without a buff, a rational consumer would choose the one with the buff. Your focus on player value finding rings hollow. You are defending a product line that makes it harder for the player base to find value.

Except neither have the same cosmetics and different cosmetics appeal to different people. There are people that hold more way to the aesthetics of an item to its functional value just as there are people that hold more value over it’s function than its aesthetics. You then have people in between.

You obviously are on the side that values functionality over aesthetics and are making a claim that other items are inferior. I’m arguing that that claim is subjective. You can take objective, subjective, or both qualities and and form a subjective opinion about the value of an item.

And the players who prefer one aesthetic option get an objectively superior item. Tbe exact situation that gw2’s wardrobe was designed to avoid.

Want the best numbers ? You’re stuck with this aesthetic.

Kind of the antithesis of what gw2’s cosmetics model was supposed to be about.

Selling cosmetic options is a core element of gw2’s business model. I get why you want the option, but not the apparent unwillingness to pay for it. It doesnt even require real world money.

What he describes are the only, other than cost, measurable, quantifiable, aspects of the tools’ value.

The game already has fishing.

Not line and pole of course, but take a spear, trident, or speargun underwater and hunt fish if you like.

If you spent a few days in pvp while your friends spent that time in pve, how would you expect to join them in Orr, or a later game dungeon, or anything of the sort?

They built it up for literally years. I think everyone hoped to be impressed, but kind of knew it would end up looking like it was designed by a committee.

It’s the sort of situation where they may have been better off spending the effort making a variety of other armour sets so players have a better chance of having a few they like, rather than one ultimate set that will be hit or miss with any given player.

This. If they were/are going to implement only one set of legendary armor they are certain to leave a signiricant portion of the player base dissatisfied.

Can we do something about mastery points?

@ Ryou.2398

Of course they have addressed these issues, it was putting a huge wall between players who play WvW- PvP and the PvE community.

Heres the thing you said it was my fault for doing PvP. When GW2 came out you could jump into any and play any at any time. If you had enough skill you could be a level 60 player in WvW who beats a level 80 player.

HOT made alot of things worse, never has anyone had a problem playing with another person. If i was in a area like ORR and my friend is level 50, we could still explore together. If i wanted to run back into PvP he could join me.

Guess what PvE has been completely separated from the PvP – WvW community. Which is why you see the threads you see in the PvP and WvW threads.

I have a ton of teleport to a friend and i used a few but guess what if i didnt have updraft, i couldnt play with them, no ley line gliding to bad you cant fight this champ with us, etc etc etc.

This was a expansion for everyone, new elite specs that were suppose to expand on PvP, a new WvW map and obviously a whole new map area and PS line.

3 things happened,

1) PvP and WvW got screwed.
Terrible metas that actually destroyed game play and build diversity.

2) You are punished for not playing PvE
Like i said the whole time, example after example. not only did Anet hide mastery points behind PvE but they also hid the new elite specs for PvE. Yes they have addressed those issues but the fact that Anet would screw over 2 groups with in there community says alot.

3) The Split of the community’s
There is a thread with a similar name which im sure we all are posting in. Once again you have people like Vayne.**** who talks about how Anet cant cater to groups and they have to play for the middle.

Yet they didnt play to the core casual player group with there 3 meta maps. Vayne talks about alot using the LFG tool and using outside resources to play the game. Which is not for the casual group at all and it takes away from just playing for fun. I now have to set up my fun, if the event isnt going on when im playing what else can i do? Join another map oh wait its another meta map and that map is full and im in the dead map.

Lets also make it so PvP and WvW players make a TON less money and have no way to the new skins in PvE. Once again they recently addressed this but man. If on Christmas me you and Tim wake up to see presents with only Ryou.2398 name on it. We are not gonna feel loved and for some reason many players just dont see that.

Anet isnt catering to the middle or trying to give everyone a little pc. We had the 4 maps only for a year. They just recently added the LS with the new maps, raids itself is like WvW and PvP in that they have there core groups who play and defend it.

Raids get way more attention then anything else right now.

WvW and PvP are dying within the game and its not some secret. Casual players are also not enjoying the game as much which is why you are seeing the questions, the core game is F2P which allows the population to still be some what good.

But the divide put on all 3 communitys come from the HOT ability to fairly reach all 3 and masterys/elite spec/ meta maps/ were all negative things that put those cracks into the game. Only now is HOT worth the price/hype it was selling nearly 2 years ago.

But all of your points come down to is this is more of a pve mmorpg then a pvp/wvw mmorpg, why should you be able to get skins that are in pve and get them in pvp hmmm? No one is being punished your just forced to do pve if you want those things, there are things pve players need to do in pvp as well and I do not see anyone complaining, There is no real division like you think, I know tons who do all kinds of content.

No one said anet needed to cater to all crowds for this expansion either.

If you dont see pve players complaining about having to venture into PvP for certain things you are not looking. Gift of Battle access has been a common complaint for years.

Team vs. Solo: Which Do You Prefer?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashen.2907

For those who don’t understand people who want to play solo in a multiplayer game……… I wouldn’t want the game to have only myself in it. That would be boring to me. I like being able to talk with people, ask questions, say hi. I like seeing others running around in the world. And yes I like grouping up to take down a world boss.

But while questing and running around leveling I like solo. I like to be able to go where I want at the pace I want without having to slow someone else down. I like not having to wonder which direction my group or partner is going. At the same time I’ll be one of the first to go help someone when they ask in chat for help. I’ll help but then go on my way solo again. ;-)

So what you want is a glorified chat room.

Grouping up to take down world bosses and assisting others who ask for help in chat doesnt sound much like a glorified chat roo as much as it does an MMORPG.

Team vs. Solo: Which Do You Prefer?

Ashen.2907

I can’t say I ‘prefer’ one over the other, honestly. It depends on what I ‘feel like’ at the time.

I do typically play “solo” though not always by choice. Sometimes I don’t have guildies or friends on that want to play what I’m playing, as such, I end up alone when I would rather have company. Conversely, there are times where I would rather be by myself, and end up with others anyway just due to how the game is set up. shrug

I do participate in things like Fractals or WvW, and I do enjoy pugging at times. Like I said, it just depends on my mood. The wonderful thing about games is that when I feel burnt out dealing with people, I can just ‘turn them off’ and satisfy the introverted need for solitude to recharge. That’s much more difficult to do (and explain) in real life situations haha.

About as perfect a description of my mindset on this as can be.

Well said.
