Unidentified gear - Please No, No, No, Nooooo

Unidentified gear, why, oh why? It is a redundant RNG throwback to old style action RPGs that serves no purpose in Guild Wars, just adds to tedium and annoyance. Please remove it from PoF release.

Except it was in Guild Wars since inception.

I like it, personally. Saves space.

Good luck.

but it hasn’t been in gw2 before they introduced it back again with PoF so why?

in core tyria and HoT we didn’t have it and we did just fine..

we also didn’t need to bring it back to life from gw1 imo.. and making them unidentified gear and making us identify them for coins is just no fun..

I think salvaging is enough. I don’t want to have to carry extra id kits in addition to salvage kits..

Cant you just salvage them without identifying?

You can, did it a few times today. Got a bit too much mats out of the gear.^^

Yes, You can, but You’d be wasting rare and exotic gear in the process.

I was just seeking onfirmation of what I thought I had seen during my time in the demo.

The person I quoted said that they felt salvaging was enough and that they didnt want to have to carry an Id kit. I guess it is confirmed that they do not need to carry an Id kit, and can stick to salvaging.

The PoF Beta... what do you think so far?

So far the scenery is nice, the night sky is absolutely gorgeous, the fights are fun, and mounts seem well implemented.

I am not one to try to do too much in a demo or beta, but I had decided to hold off on buying this expansion until well after release, if at all, due to my perceptions of HoT. Now I shall probably prepurchase PoF.

Why no elite spec testing I'm PvE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashen.2907

I think part of the reason is to get some beta testing done in the three main areas of the game. First weekend is the PvE beta, second is the PvP and WvW beta.

Second reason would be to keep the preview to a fairly short look. Three days is actually a lot of time to try the new area, and they don’t want people burning out on it before the expansion even goes live. Six days would be overkill.

And finally, nobody in PvP or WvW is going to be trying to unlock the elite specs, so whatever method is used won’t apply. If they did them in PvE, that might possibly be an issue, maybe? I’m not sure. But you can still just stand around in the PvP lobby and look at the options on the elite specs and think about a build you want to work towards. If nothing else, it may help me to decide what elite I’m going to work towards first.

Why wouldnt people in WvW want to unlock elite specs?

Has Anet Remembered the Casuals?

Like anet ever forget about the casual.

It did.. very much so, with HoT. Which is why I am asking if they decided to remember us with this upcoming expansion.

If you don’t think Anet forgot about the casuals when making HoT.. then.. simply put.. you’re not a casual so would not notice it. No shame in that.

I am a casual.

I dont feel that Anet forgot casuals with HoT.

I dont care for navigating the HoT maps so much, but the encounters and such are fun.

Elite Specs in Gem Store?

Elite specs in the gemstore will clearly cross the line of what constitutes p2w in a cashshop, regardless of any gold conversion.

I play GW2 because it isnt an Asian MMO.

Please dont try to make it into one. Lets stick to expansions.

I think that adding elite specs to the gemstore would be less p2w.

Currently, in order to access elite specs, a player must spend real money. Under the OP’s proposal a player could spend in game gold instead.

Seems like a short range for a supposedly ranged weapon.

I primary ran sword focus, with staff as a backup because I liked the visuals, a ranged backup weapon, and the whole battlemage theme. Not sure that I care for the change.

Note that I am not a guardian main, dont really play him that much, so may not be the best judge of balance for the profession…but this change is decidedly un-fun to me.

Ashen.2907

Insanely overpriced, look at the actual cost in money for that instant level 80 ticket. I’ll never understand why people allow themselves to be ripped off like that and then thank companies for it. People wanted at least a way to convert the nearly infinite tomes they’ve gathered into a Level 80 Tome of some sort (boost without the items from the normal one) but they said “Nah we’ll put it in the gem store instead”

I’ll just never understand it.

Those people are not being ripped off.

Choosing to buy something you want at a price you are willing to pay, with full and accurate knowledge of the product, is pretty much the opposite of being ripped off.

Gathering In Elona - All Tiers Please

I participate in events that are around me, as well, if I’m gathering. Even if L80s didn’t, it’s good for newer players to see other players around. I doubt there are ever so many gathering-only players in a lower-level map that they fill it up so much others can’t get in.

Plus, if there are veterans on the map, even if they are not actively participating in events, they might be inclined to respond to calls for help from newer players.

I often will not be actively participating in events while gathering iron, etc, but I will help anyone looking for it.

Open World and Instanced reward Tracks

PvErs asking for more ways to get stuff easily. Why am I not surprised?

Not sure why people are looking at this as an “I want more rewards” thread. This is a “PvP and WvW receive items from content they don’t want to play, why should PvE be forced to play the content we don’t want to for the same rewards”, thread.

If it’s easy for us to obtain the season 3 map items and dungeon items (which is not true for all players while being able to play what they want for the day as well [or at all in some cases]) why should PvP/WvW? Why are we the only ones who have to forgo our content to obtain rewards outside of our content while PvP and WvW can remain in theirs and receive the same rewards? Not asking for more rewards quicker; asking for ways to play the way we want while receiving rewards from areas we don’t want to play. No different from PvP and WvW.

Perhaps I have missed it, but have you suggested lowering rewards for PvE, fractals etc in particular, so that adding reward tracks for those players does not increase the already significant gap between rewards in PvE and those in WvW/Pvp?

What would you be willing to give up to get what you are asking for? You can say that your request isnt about getting more rewards, but adding rewards without taking anything away is exactly that.

Why do hammers look so small?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

Its demonstrable, in game, that under the physical (and metaphysical) laws of the setting, a larger version of the same weapon type does not do more damage than a smaller. So increasing the size of a weapon would increase its cost without benefit.

Also, as the people, in setting, developing the weapons choose not to make them larger, its arguable that they know that there would be no benefit. After all if just increasing the size of the weapon would increase success as a warrior, then it would be a simple enough thing to implement.

But, again, it is established fact in game that a larger version of the same weapon or weapon type does not do more damage.

You are comparing gameplay mechanic to lore? Like really? You know that things are simplified and balanced for gameplay purposes? I guess people of Tyria don’t need to poop, because we never see them poop, you can play forever without taking a poop.

Never seeing them defecate does not mean that they dont do so. It is, however, a demonstrable fact that larger weapons dont do more damage than smaller versions of the same.

You asked, essentially, how do we know what a warrior could do with a larger weapon. There is evjdence that the answer is, “essentially the same as what he can do with a smaller version.”

Purely from a lore/setting standpoint….weaponsmiths are capable of making larger weapons and choose not to. As this is a setting frequently embroiled in martial conflict, weapons development, within the bounds of current tech capability, will reach for the most efficient or effective application possible.

A better question than, “why are hammers so small,” would be, "why use hammers, sword, etc at all in a setting where assault rifles, flame throwers, submachine guns, gr enades, etc are fairly common?

Huh… What about when you happen to fight animals 5x your size that have thicker skin than ten of your plate armours combined. What do you use then?

Not a larger hammer at least, assuming you accept the magic behind making an animal hide withstand something made to ~easily punch straight through metal. And we do, because well, magic fantasy world.

You all keep trying to come with some logical explanations that are based on our world. How many times do I have to repeat that this is fantasy? You’re making your argument harder for yourself because you insist on using real world rules and realism.
If developer designs a toothpick that is able to kill a god, that’s how it is. It might seem kitten, but that’s the story. You are free to dislike it of course. So, obviously, you have no idea how size of the hammer works and make difference in the world of gw. It’s obvious that humans, at least certain ones like PC, are not regular humans from our world. They are capable of withstanding a lot of punishment and wield very heavy weapons and swing them without an effort. So how do you know what they are capable of doing with a bigger hammer? Maybe small hammer is a waste for them, since they are capable of wielding bigger hammers that can do a lot more damage, so why wouldn’t they? If I would find myself in Tyria and had an option to wield small or large weapon, why would i choose one that is less efficient?

But a larger hammer? Hardly helpful. Unless you mean a small point on a very very long handle, like a halberd with a point? Because otherwise you’re softening the impact quite a bit with that large impact surface.

Again, using our worlds rules. And even if you want to use our rules, you fail again. Hammers in our world didn’t need a “point”. They were made to crush the enemy with their armour along. The pressure of hammer hitting was enough to injure and kill them. No need to “pierce” armour.

Plus, erm… after I took this serious for 5 minutes and looked around… why don’t you just use one of the plethora or super comically large hammers ingame? And stop telling others that their small hammers also being on offer is such a big dealbreaker apparently? I mean it’s just common sense…

Good job on ignoring my point in order to make yours. I know you are not taking it seriously, because that would require of you to actually make a valid point. I never asked for bigger hammers. I agree with op that hammers are not large enough in comparison to other twohanders, so I wish some of them were bigger, but I never said I insist on all of them being huge. I support diversity. You are the ones coming here trying to explain pure imagination with realism that we know it.
Do you come to chinese restaurant and complain they don’t have pizza? They might have pizza, nothing stops them from having pizza and some people might be happy to have that option, but you can’t come there and insist they should have pizza on the menu. It’s chinese restaurant because they have chinese food, same as fantasy has fantasy stuff.
Here, looks like you skipped the definition in your search: Fantasy – “the faculty or activity of imagining impossible or improbable things.” Trying to craft fantasy world with realism is like trying to search for pizza in chinese restaurant. What’s the point? If you want pizza, you go to pizzeria.

Bought exp but still have to buy content?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashen.2907

I believe that content bundles like HoT + PoF should include living season chapters. Someone making such a purchase is demonstrating a desire and willingness to pay for content in quantity, and should be rewarded for it. The game needs people who see shelling out $80 all at once for a game they intend to play long term as normal.

Of course those who cannot, or choose not to, pay all out up front have the option to buy incrementally over time. They can be more cautious with their gaming budget and so buy chapters individually.

There are those who prefer to buy their games ala carte and others who prefer an all in one package. We should not be treating the latter as if they are the former.

There are various stores (including toy stores) that stock extremely realistic (far more so than one in this video game) plastic/rubber spiders/lizard/snake/rodent/scary-thing, prominently displaying said goods on their shelves and in their advertising. Some of these stores are part of far more successful businesses (we’re talking magnitudes of order here even) with even larger marketing research than Blizzard. However, both your argument and my counterargument are dependent on the same fallacy of assuming the real result of the research by interpreting the actions taken by the researchers.

To be fair, toy stores are not selling to customer A in a circumstance where customer B, who is phobic, might then be expected to be exposed to person A’s purchase on an ongoing basis.

As a side note, to no one in particular, preventing exposure to someone’s irrational fear is not helping them, you are at best maintaining the bad situation. You might actually even be making it worse. For those of you fighting irrational fear, you should really try to beat it. I know personal story/expereinces but in the case of spiders, I got my girlfriend to hold a big hairy spider in a safe environment through gentle encouragement and she is no longer afraid of them. Still doesn’t like them, but I find that healthy survival instinct myself.
Another little example, when I was a kid I was terrified of the dark. When I started getting older (but still a kid) I would stay up and stare into the dark to overcome that fear, because I found it embarrassing. I was able to figure it out as a kid how to beat my own fears, its not complex science (psychology rarely is). If a nerdy little child can do it, so can you. And you’ll probably feel really good about yourself afterwards.

This matches my own experience in dealing with a fear of heights. Keep in mind though that, for some people, your described approach can actually make matters worse. And sometimes, much, much worse.

TL:DR – Do you what you enjoy doing, and the rewards will come to you.

That’s not how it works, you either end up grinding something all over or you get nothing. Nothing comes in this game from casual play or “fun play” or those short time spans you could actually afford to grind. The usual grind that we can find in other games simply is nonexistent in gw2.

Could you please elaborate on this statement? As it stands you are implying that nothing can be obtained from casual play or “fun play”, and that is blatantly false.

My thought as well. I play casually for the most part and get a solid scattering of various rewards.

A Compromise for Others Who Don't Want Mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

Your idea sounds rather silly OP. Why would anyone want our super cool mounts to be replaced with turning our characters into The Flash, Superman or The Green Lantern?

Seriously, I don’t understand why some of you are so anti-mounts. Mounts are cool. Especially these mounts Anet has in store for us in PoF. Why would someone not want them?

Perhaps because not everyone thinks that they are cool?

Think about your favorite character.
Specifically his appearance.
How you spent hours choosing the right combination of armor pieces and dyes.
How proud you are of the results.
How much you enjoy having such a cool looking character.

Now realise that someone else thinks your character is unattractive, or otherwise visually unappealing.

You see, or perhaps you dont, we all have different opinions about what we think looks good.

Oh come on. There are 5 vastly different mounts. They are all well-designed and you can tell that the devs spend an incredibly amount of time animating them and making their movement look good, attractive and believable. You can’t tell me you think all 5 of them look ugly, that just seems dishonest to me.

Besides, how would “your character booking it at high speed through the desert” look any better? I think that would look incredibly stupid.

Clearly, there are way more people in the “mounts are cool” camp than the “mounts are lame” camp. If this wasn’t the case, Anet wouldn’t have added them in PoF. Or do you think the market researchers at Anet aren’t doing their job?

So people who dont like the same things as you are dishonest…

What looks good or attractive is subjective. One could just as easily, and accurately, say that anet spent an incredible amount of time animating them and making their movement look bad and unattractive.

This whole “everything is subjective” spiel is old, it’s not true, and needs to die.

While indeed a good portion of beauty is subjective, most of it is grounded in objective measurable reality. The ’ uncanny valley’ for example, is a real thing and almost universally applicable to all human beings, and it’s objectively measurable. The ‘golden ratio’ is also a real, objective, and universal standard for beauty. Build your composition according to the ‘golden ratio’, and your painting will look universally more professional and more attractive to 99,9% of all people. People who’s facial structure closely match the ‘golden ratio’ are universally considered more attractive than people who’s faces do not match the ‘golden ratio’. These opinions and views on beauty are universal across the whole world and independent from culture.

To say “one could just as easily, and accurately, say that anet spent an incredible amount of time animating them and making their movement look bad and unattractive” is just blatantly false, nonsensical and stupid, and you know it. Or are you saying the animators at Anet don’t know how to do their job?

Anet can’t please everybody, ‘t is true. But they can please the vast majority. And the vast majority wanted mounts, but the vast majority also didn’t just want mounts for a speed boost, they wanted them to be meaningful. And thus, Anet delivered us exactly that after 5 years of people asking for it.

As a reminder, I was responding to:

Why would anyone want our super cool mounts to be replaced

Not a question about what a majority might find appealing, but why would anyone want mounts replaced.

For what it is worth, you are incorrect about something being universally more appealing. More likely to be appealing. Yes. More appealing to more people. Sure. Universal appeal? Feel free to provide a single example of a work of art that is universally (definition: without exception, in every case) appealing.

Everyone claiming that mounts break immersion should google ‘what is game immersion?’ and read some articles and/or play LotRO. Immersion is about coherence and authenticity and mounts can increase the authenticity of a game world. If immersion is your biggest concern, then I have no idea why you are playing GW2.

It is clear to me that the declaration that ‘mounts break immersion’ is more of a slogan used to identify one’s aesthetic and group and not a reasoned argument. Imo, it is an aesthetic dominated by entitled contrarianism. You are entitled to believe that our PCs should be able to overcome any obstacle the world presents by pulling some magical ability from our kitten. You are entitled to insist that GW2 has to be contrary to every other mmo. The studio has definitely cultivated that mythos. However, you are not entitled to declare that failing to live up to your aesthetic breaks immersion. Have the dignity to declare you preference without claiming there is an existential risk in the studio’s failing to cater to your preference.

That being said, I hope mounts are restricted from certain areas like towns and open world crafting hubs. I can’t stand visual clutter and having mounts in those areas come closest to breaking immersion. It turns everything into the real world equivalent of a drive thru window (edit) and transform world elements that are important because they are areas the player shares with NPCs into areas that are just playgrounds for heroes.

Actually they are entitled to make the claim that failing to live up to their preferences breaks immersion (for them at least). Arenanet, owners of these forums, grants the entitlement to provide that feedback.

Personally I do not find mounts to be inherently immersion breaking, but others have different tolerances for different things. Something that is so aesthetically, or otherwise, distracting, or perhaps offputting as to distance one from the story and setting can interfere with one’s immersion.

Um like I won’t be buying it. Oh look more gated mastery garbage. I’ll pass. I haven’t bothered with all the HoT mastery gates already because frankly its a chore and a bore. So my toon is at +33 and maxed xp for the bar.

I simply don’t care. And the game has really poor balance where its just a face roll DPS race as the damage you receive in PVE is so out of control that nothing short of a dodge roll matters for mitigation. So Vitality and Toughness are just worthless stats overall.

Likewise to healing builds, you cant heal dead and thats what most people are if a mob so much at looks at them the wrong way. Overall this is one of the most dumbed down MMOs I have played.

Fantastic artwork, but the obvious gates on content and poor balance rob this game of what makes a MMO great.

I currently run with a little over 3200 armor on my main, with some vitality for about 3k health above base for my profession and it makes a huge difference compared to the glass builds I have also used. Dodging is important too, of course, but traditional MMO mitigation has an effective place as well.

When guild wars 2 launched it was going to step away from traditional MMOs. But in truth it’s creeped slowly to being just like every other MMO out there. I guess ANet have finally run out of imagination and has to start adding the things that will make it just the same as the rest. Oh well.

I think we are more likely to see mount skins in the gemstore than being sold at a merchant for gold.

What do you mean no progression? There is 5 new maps to explore, new mastery lines, weapons, armours, and everything to collect.

The Mastery system is progression, and the elite skill specs to unlock.

Feels like you missed half of the paragraph where i am saying “Unrewarding redundant stuff”. Not gonna play another 300 hours to be look good than get good.

“Get good,” as you put it is represented by the player increasing his skill level with a given character in the game. Its not about leaning on a crutch of power creep to pretend to be getting better. If a player spends, “300 hours,”, and doesnt, “get good,” or at least get better, at the the game then the problem might not be with the game.

5 new maps to spread us thinner.

And if they don’t make new maps? What sort of an expansion would that be?

Fine by me.
Last new map I’ve got was bloodstone fen and only been a few times.
None since.
They chasing the hardcore gamers off a cliff with all the new content that filthy casuals like me are being left behind on.

You are not being left behind, you are choosing to not participate.

Perhaps if you can figure out how to develop an expansion without spending money on it…

Mounts (both in real life and in game), create a large distance between people,

This is the exact opposite of what actually happened in the real world.

The addition of non-foot travel reduced the effective distance between people. Further innovation in the non-foot travel field, vehicles for example, continue this trend.

My grandparents live about 40 miles from me. In the days of foot travel only I would probably never have seen them again. In the modern era I can see them every day if I choose.

GL Anet with Expansion

Another grindfest expansion? Nice.

There are no MMO’s that are without time sinks. That’s the nature of the genre.

Back on topic, I too wish ANet well.

This is absolutely true. And, I love grinding in an MMO; I believe the presence of grinds does nothing but enrich the game. The only distinction I make is between optional grinds and non-optional grinds. Some non-optional grinds are necessary in your typical MMO: 1-max level anyone? It’s just that post max level I would prefer that the game would shift away from non-optional grinds to more and more optional ones. An example of a non-optional grind would be any grind that increases your power level, so vertical progression would be an example of a non-optional grind. You simply must keep up with the power curve or you eventually won’t be able to play. But basically any grind that advances the core game would be by definition non-optional.

But the options around optional grinds are endless in a modern MMO. I would like to see evidence that this is a principle at Anet. The Anet that released GW2 was principle rich. In fact, this is what caused me to purchase and play GW2 since before it was released. Currently, principles, design principles, get short shrift at Anet. Perhaps with the addition of VandenBerghe to the team there will be a return to a thoughtful design philosophy.

I’m having trouble identifying a non-optional grind in GW2. For some, Ascended will be non-optional, but actually needing Ascended as opposed to wanting it involves choosing to do high level FotM or choosing to enter PuG raid groups with gear requirements (if that’s even still a thing).

I do think though that the game development philosophy has shifted from, “Focus more on creating lots of interesting things to do, with rewards as an afterthought.” to something more like, “Add a few interesting things to do, along with a new map currency and several optional things to buy with it.” Thing is, I don’t really expect that to change, because I think that a lot of MMO fans care more about the carrot than the journey.

Well with HoT they did try to give people optional things to do. How many adventures are in HoT? They’re all optional things to do with their own leaderboards. And sometimes I’ll go and play fallen masks, just for fun because I enjoy it. Bugs in the Branches too. They’re like Sanctum Sprint was originally, except on a smaller scale.

And there are still jumping puzzles coming out. Completing new maps is also a thing to do. The leather farm is a thing to do. New Fractals are a thing to do

Saying that they were originally coming out with interesting things to do, and now they’re not doesn’t make sense. What was in the game originally? Dungeons, personal stories, minigames, open world map exploration, world bosses/metas, crafting. They’re still coming out with all of those things.

If anything, to me, the scavenger hunts and current events and quests like the calabolg quest are all new things to do. What’s really changed?

I think his last paragraph is more a reference to the post HoT LS3 maps which do seem to be shorter on interesting things to do than the HoT maps. Understandably so IMO as they are short iteration content seemingly meant to keep us occupied between expansions. Ive enjoyed them for the most part but then I also can enjoy farming.

Agreed

Obviously people asking what is recycled are trying to derail because this entire topic will be taken down if the TC mentions the actual spoilers.

When the game launched the innovation was high and welll received the issues where that some basic features from the last game were absent. Basic things like templates and the overuse of the waypoint making things just as bad as flying in other games. Since the roads aren’t full of players but rather people warping around.

The redundancies in the leaks I’ve seen expressed before at other places are redundancies seen in different aspects of the game. Which have gotten worse with the introduction of the mastery system.

I don’t know I’ve seen a lot of leaks without redudancy. But it doesn’t matter because I don’t judge games before I’ve played them. Anyone saying the expansion is redundant is making assumptions.

Some of us prefer to actually see something before we judge.

No such thing as perfection so treating the game as such gets you no where.

Some of us don’t blindly defend however how many different types of Swiftness exist in this game? How many different ways to jump? How many story arcs repeat? How many things have been abandoned? How many have been overly fixated on?

Even on this site there is a topic about Anets need to showhorn jump mechanics in with releases. During this last release the new mushroom jump is in the key line organs.

If the leaks are real the information is known and judgement has been made based on the information shown. I hate having to bring up reddit all the time but during the leaks it’s one of the places it was discussed at length. That too is a place the devs frequent. People don’t talk about the leaks much these days however because many simply don’t want to be spoiled.

First of all, saying someone defends someone blindly is a bit rich when you consider I just said I’m willing to wait and see. One of us is making a conclusion about a product that’s not out yet and the other is saying wait and see. I’m not even sure how that’s a defense. What you’re showing is a bias toward me because in your mind you’ve already labeled me a white knight. What I’m doing is being reasonable. If you feel it’s okay to draw conclusions about a product before you’ve seen it, that’s okay. I don’t think it’s okay, I’m entitled to that opinion. It’s neither unreasonable nor blind

But this other stuff you’re saying, about different ways to jump or different types of swiftness, well it’s funny but that’s the nature of fantasy and even fiction in general. There aren’t thousands of plots there are dozens. But there are millions of books.

There are only so many ways you can move. Some people look at the mechanics and see nothing but mechanics and some people look at the flavor of something and see something else. Seeing yourself launched out of a lava tube is a completely different thing than using a portal, even though for all practical purposes they act the same.

There are only so many ways you can move. There are only so many types of combat. In many games there are aoes and point blank aoes, often with different effects doing different damage. That doesn’t mean that using them is rehashing something.

At any rate, before you start bandying around words like blindly defending, maybe you should look and see if something is actually being defended.

My bais is due to your own comment about some of wanting to wait and see before coming to conclusions. If you don’t like people saying the same then I figure you shouldn’t have added such a thing to your initial reply. Furthermore your taking me as an individual a simple search will reveal I am not. Those were examples because the masteries are obvious and what you see as visual choice in masteries others simply do not. It was an example and isn’t the redundancies that people were talking about regarding the leaks.

Bad news for you….you ARE an individual. One person. No search of any sort will establish otherwise.

Also, waiting to judge a product until it is released, until the details are available to be judged, is not defending it or considering it to be perfect. Ive been arguing with Vayne on these forums for years now, but “Im going to wait and see before I judge,” is pretty much the most reasonable thing (IMO) that Ive ever seen him say.

But at least you admit to your bias.

This is absolutely true advice for the solo player. However, if you do anything group oriented, meta matters. Your idiosyncrasies will only compromise group efficiency and effectiveness—and the group will notice.

What’s it like playing to have 0 fun? I don’t know what that’s like because I don’t let other people dictate what gear I use. And I haven’t had any problems doing group content with the gear/build I use.

I play to have fun. And, for me, it’s fun to do well in combat in PvE and PvP. It’s also fun to contribute to a teams ability to do well in combat. There are many factors involved in “doing well”, e.g., player ability, experience with encounter mechanics, what you ate and drank for dinner, internet connection, gear, and builds. Objectively, gear and builds combine to set your power level in the game. And, in games where the goal is to reduce an opponents HP to zero before they reduce your HP to zero, your power level will dictate both whether you can meet the goal (gear check), how efficiently you can meet the goal, and how much you can contribute to your team.

For lots of content it’s not necessary to be playing at the top of the meta. However, in group content with any challenge your choice to perform less well in terms of your idiosyncrasies of build and gear, will mean that your team members will have to take up your slack. It’s just an objective fact that can be reduced to a set of numbers. For me, it’s not fun to play less well than I could (solo even) and not something I want to saddle my team with. And, this goes for both games and IRL.

Team members do not, necessarily, have to, “take up your slack,” as even end game content in this game has a cushion that allows for suboptimal play to still reach the goal you describe.

As I said, in trivial content it’s irrelevant how optimized you are in terms of gear/build. And you are right in non-trivial content it’s always possible to be suboptimal and be carried by your group. But, your teammates will be making up for your under-performance. For example, let’s say it takes 50k to down a boss in a 5 man group. The group succeeds with one player contributing 5,000 damage and the other four contributing 11,250 damage each. What has happened is that four people took up the slack of one sub-optimal player. Can it be done? Yes, but it’s the very essence of taking up the slack; one person under-performed and the four other team mates had to make up for the under-performance.

And, it’s important to note that this is not a matter of opinion. In any encounter it can be reduced to a set of numbers. With combat logs it’s easy to measure, without them the same thing occurs without the metrics.

If it takes 80k dps to take the foe down before the boss stomps the group and an optimal group is capable of 100kdps then the entire group can be suboptimal without anyone picking up anyone else’s slack.

Currently no encounter in the game requires the full output of fully optimal/optimized characters. Full optimization is overkill, as demonstrated by entire groups using green gear in raids, or all suboptimal build groups, etc.

Riving orbs do not exist in the lore. They are a gameplay thing. Otherwise every dead in the story would be meaningless because they could just be revived with such a orb.

Nah, most dead NPCs dont have the gems needed to buy the orbs, nor a credit cqrd to get the gems.
