Its not so much about how many spells you have, its about how you use them.

Why do I get aggro from everything?

You probably dont have the most toughness out of every single player in the game. You certainly do not pull aggro from every player in the game.

You also dont outlive everyone’s, “precious,” berzerker against any foe either..

You are tougher than some, perhaps many, and do draw aggro, depending on mob, as a result.

You are not forced to be a tank, aggro control or not.

Well you’d be surprised to see that I pull enemies away from everyone that I run past or those that run past me. I can join group events halfway through and the boss (if possible) will target me immediately and not target anyone else.

And it sounds like you’re one of those people that thinks if you don’t have Berserker stats then you’re playing the wrong way. But yeah, I’ve outlived everyone I’ve played with. I’ve been the designated picker-upper since everyone else would go down in a couple hits because they think DPS Elementalists with daggers are the Best Thing Ever.

But you see, if I’m a tank, why don’t I have tank skills, like ones that specifically draw aggro? I don’t know if you’ve played any other MMOs, but having high armour alone doesn’t make you a tank. Tanks get skills that generate aggro, and if they don’t use those skills then someone else will start getting attacked, like a healer or something.

I currently use shortbow on my Ranger main. Not really a zerker weapon. Currently running about 2300 toughness. I have played berzerker builds, but they do not define my playstyle.

If you are outliving all zerkers that you play with then you are playing exclusively with people who are, apparently, bad at running glass builds.

I am glad that artificial taunts are not ubiquitous in gw2. To be fair, I am not fond of toughness as an aggro mechanic either. But the basic idea that mobs should be forced to ignore healers or high dps characters in favor of the nigh invulnerable guy because he shouted an insult or something is awful.

That said, you dont have skills specifically to draw aggro because, as you point out, you dont need them.

You’re the victim of artificial stupidity, so that GW2 can be like all the cool MMO kids with their stupid outdated tanking mechanics. They might as well make enemies focus their CCs on whoever has the most stab.

Hey quick question, who urinated in your breakfast this morning?

I asked for clarification (which other people gave, albeit not in the most civil way), so it’s really not necessary to be rude about it.

Anyway…. if it is about toughness, how in the world do I have the most toughness out of every single player in the game. I use Soldier’s stats for my Herald. It’s the reason why I can outlive everyone’s precious Berserkers against any enemy, but that doesn’t mean I want to be a tank. I’m there to give boons and keep everyone else alive, not be a tank. Why can’t there be a more clear aggro system. It shouldn’t be determined by 8 or more vague concepts simultaneously. If there’s no rigid party roles, why am I forced to be a tank without any actual aggro control.

You probably dont have the most toughness out of every single player in the game. You certainly do not pull aggro from every player in the game.

You also dont outlive everyone’s, “precious,” berzerker against any foe either..

In a game with submachine guns, assault rifles, grenades, flamethrowers, etc…a bent stick with a string attached and a pointed stick projectile seem thematically off.

To be fair it wasn’t until the 1800s that guns actually got better than longbows.

The reason bows where dropped for guns is because wielding a longbow requires years of training to master, while a man can be trained to use a gun in a day.

It doesnt really matter when, in the real world, guns finally outstripped bows (it happened earlier than the 1800’s) if we are referencing a setting with assault rifles, machineguns, flamethrowers, grenades, tanks, helicopters, attack submarines, etc…

dictator is a person who gets to power through sheer force, without an hereditary succession to legitimate his rule.

No.

Ok, so this is why it’s important to leave a rebuttal ONLY if you have information to back it up. Not only because it gives some credibility to your side of the argument, but also because you can avoid embarrassing situations, such as finding out that your opponent literally just posted the definition of a dictator.
From the English dictionary: “noun
1.
a person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.
2.
(in ancient Rome) a person invested with supreme authority during a crisis, the regular magistracy being subordinated to him until the crisis was met.
3.
a person who authoritatively prescribes conduct, usage, etc.:
a dictator of fashion.
4.
a person who dictates, as to a secretary.”

Also, just saying “No” with no further argument is the internet equivalent of stomping your feet and yelling “You’re wrong shut up!”

Invented, or misinterpreted/misquoted definitions do not need a rebuttal.

“The English Dictionary…”

There is only one?

Merriam Webster:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dictator

Definition of dictator
1
a : a person granted absolute emergency power; especially, history : one appointed by the senate (see senate 1a) of ancient Rome
b : one holding complete autocratic control : a person with unlimited governmental power
c : one ruling in an absolute (see absolute 2) and often oppressive way fascist dictators
2
: one who says or reads something for a person to transcribe or for a machine to record : one that dictates (see 1dictate 1)

Dictionary.com
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/dictator?s=t
noun
1.
a person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.

Note that they say especially in a government without hereditary succession, not exclusively so.

Cambridge:
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/dictator#translations

dictator
noun [ C ] US ? /?d?k·te?·t??r, d?k?te?-/
?
politics & government someone who rules a country with complete power, has complete control over the armed forces, and destroys any political opposition.

Cambridge adds the, “destroys any political opposition,” element but, again, no non-hereditary restrictions.

Oxford:
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/dictator

A ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force.

1.1 A person who behaves in an autocratic way.

Oxford adds, “typically,” regarding gaining control by force but, again, not exclusively so. As the word has its origin in an appointed position, and as the other top tier dictionaries (not that dictionary.com qualifies as such but merriam and cambridge certainly qualify) exclude even this qualified qualifier its safe to say that although a dictator may gain their authority by force, they need not do so.

Its worth noting that even your listed definition contradicts the individual I had quoted. When something is, “especially,” so, then it is, by definition, not exclusively so.

Have you mastered all of the musical instruments?

Completed every achievement?

Have every weapon and armor skin?

Done every JP, timed. Beaten your best times? Beaten your guildies’ best times?

RPed an extensive and deep character story? Done the same for friends?

I am not trying to say that you havent done everything there is to do in the game, but many people making the claim seem to have not.

Not everyone is musically gifted, I don’t care how much they practice (myself included) and bringing that understanding into game is even more bothersome.

Achievements and collecting skins, that’s time and money to be invested. Assuming the OP works 8+ hours a day, has a family, it’s easier said than done compared to someone who doesn’t work as long or is single/still schooling.
Then of course there’s an aspect of the game I and other’s detest, pvp. Someone could try and attempt to convince me to play pvp more, but for most it won’t happen. The toxicity either ruins or has ruined the experience for it. So for me, those achievements won’t be done anytime soon.

As for the JPs, I myself have done all the core JPs (not including the new ones). But with the time I have now with my current job compared to my last few, I really don’t bother with the new ones. Learning takes time and repetitions (see the line above).

And I don’t RP much. Nor does it really interest me.

Overall, the OP may also be annoyed by the time zones.
Right now (time of this post: 2:23am EST), most people east coast NA will be catching z’s or getting ready for work. So that’s just another thing to keep in mind about in-game populations.

TLDR, it’s daunting to think of attempting it all and definitely easier said than done.

(add on) All the above is simply stating why I prefer to take my time towards any of my current progress. Not to be used as excuses why there’s nothing to do.

The OP asked for non combat things to do. I mentioned a few options. Thats it really.

Mounts [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

In that case, my previously silly idea isnt that silly at all, and they will have stables where you pick up your mount.

How do you envision you will summon the mounts? With a magical whistle that makes them appear in front of you out of thin air? And how do you envision you will “dismount” from your mount? Will the mount become a pet and follow you around, or like most other mmorgps, it will magically disappear the same way it appeared?
If they follow the standard mmorpg patterns of appearing/disappearing out of thin air, then the same way can be used to make them disappear when you are in an area that doesn’t support them. Magically appear, magically disappear. No need for stables or anything of the like to store them.

It does not state that it is impossible however.

The main bottleneck with game performance is the main thread. And adding mounts, means double the characters on screen, meaning more strain on that main thread.
It’s highly unlikely that a mount would use a different thread than the rest of the game, if it was that easy to split it then they would’ve done it by now for other items and not wait for mounts.

In another game ai have played mounts replace an existing character model with a new one that is “mounted.” The portion of the new model that resembles the original character model is largely inanimate as the portion that looks like a mount is animated. The result is not twice as many characters on screen, but rather somewhat larger, but less complex in terms of animation, characters.

I imagine that the reason autoloot doesnt work when we are dead is not because of some grand idea of punishing failure, but because the system was being programmed on a time budget and time ran out.

Similarly, I imagine that the reason it hasnt been changed is time budgeting. As good a reason as any IMO. To get this changed something else would be delayed.

Remove WvW Linking - Give Us Back Our Servers

in WvW

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

The fundamental conflict here is between people who value different things in wvw: “server identity” vs competitiveness/balance. The OP and most of those arguing for breaking the links obviously care much more about server identity than competitive balance, as you can see in most of their arguments posted in favor of breaking links. For the rest of us, esp those who were on bottom-level NA servers before the linking, competitive balance is far more important than any vague sense of “server identity”.

My “server identity” before linking (when I was still on my original server) was “loser”. Our server finished 24th (that’s dead last) every single WvW season. We once got a screenshot of the ENTIRE server wvw community at reset of a whopping 17 people. You could get on and not see another soul for hours. When you got matched up with any of the top 20 or so servers, you’d get run over most of the time you tried to do anything. We got matched up with YB and another bottom-level server once and the majority of the week YB maintained a 650+ warscore (hitting 695 many times). It was a terrible situation for the bottom tier servers unless you liked solo flipping camps all day.

There are actually still imbalances even linked up, which shows you just how disparate the server levels still are. My current server gets destroyed in off hours pretty much every week even with the linkings, but at least we can get enough people to run around and do stuff most of the time. Queues are here at reset but not most of the rest of the week.

As for the notion that we can handle unlinking now because of greater population after pips/legendary was introduced…I’m pretty sure you know that argument is nonsense. You don’t make a major structure change around a temporary phenomenon. The majority of the new players who jumped on when the pip system came on don’t really care about wvw in and of itself, and many of those have already left the game mode since they don’t care to invest that much time in getting the shiny. Once those who do want to stick it out for the shiny get theirs in the next 6-8 months, many will also leave. A few who were new to the mode will stick around past that, but the idea that unlinking will be workable because of the shiny-seekers won’t hold water in the long-term.

The best idea I’ve seen is the one for adding a 5th tier, giving 3 more servers host status, and unlinking 6 servers instead of 3. That would be worth experimenting with to see if some sense of balance can be maintained.

But the absolute last thing I want to see is a repeat of the days when SF steamrolled FC+ET for 3 straight months of yawnfests.

Just out of curiosity, what server are you on?

I didnt play any differently than I normally would and didnt see a difference. For a while I kept running into gank squads, or just solo players more skilled than I, which killed me before I could score a kill of my own. Even with having to respawn and run back out to find an objective I didnt see significant, if any, decay. By actively doing things I kept my particilation up without difficulty.

Just because someone says it, doesn’t mean it’s true… works for me, and for the devs. They can say what they want.. I can go on what I see with the people I know. At the end of the day, with the new PIP system I still say the servers would do just fine. You can argue against it again and again and it still won’t change the idea that it could work.

What applied then doesn’t necessarily apply now, and so on.

Ok, so find the dev who made the quote and call him/her a liar and challenge their stats against what you “see” and what “people know”… Id love to see that interaction take place on the forums so start a thread and pm the dev…

I’m not getting angry either… You are basically saying that the devs are misleading the players, and countering that dev statement by your personal speculation.

You counter facts with facts, not assumptions. By all means, you are more than welcome to challenge the devs, but you better have all your stats in order, not just what you “see” and you think others “know”…

Do you know what the player cap per map is?

Do you know what the average amount of overall players per server, on every server, is?

Do you know the total average wvw participation rates for every month this game has been in existence?

Do you have the overall average amounts of wvw players and participation rates pre and post linking?

Do you have any stats with regard to anything wvw related that you can provide a rational counter argument with besides what you assume?

…The answers are that you don’t know any factual stats, so you’re basically calling a dev a liar. And your only argument to remove linking is that you think you, and other players, know better… That counter argument won’t win on any level and certainly won’t be strong enough to convince the devs to remove linking at this stage in the game.

Dev post from Tyler Bearce…

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Additional-World-Linking-Information/first

“We’ve also had a substantial increase in global WvW participation since reward tracks, world linking, and the return of the Alpine borderlands. On top of that, we use a fairly long historical tail on WvW activity level for world population purposes.”

From Reddit.. quote from the polling site…

“The week of April 19th we released World Linking and Reward changes in WvW. Since the release we’ve seen an increase in WvW population and participation and we believe we’re moving in the right direction. We’re here today to ask if you think that World Linking is a positive improvement to the game. As before, we’re looking for 75% of the population voting “Yes” or “No” to agree that World Linking should remain a feature.

Do you believe that the WvW World Linking should be a Guild Wars 2 feature?"

…So please challenge Tyler’s statements and get linking removed. So far you have zero rational counter arguments to remove linking, so you might want to work on that when you bring it up to him and the team.

World linking had nothing to do with participation going up, unless you count the mercenaries paid to be on larger servers – that is the only ‘uptick’ from linking and that’s heinous abuse of real WvW’ers.

Adding a Legendary, that raised the population incredibly.

World Linking is still listed as a ‘beta test’. Not my words, theirs.

Linking is a destroyer of the game.

Adding a Legendary and tickets added value.

Linking needs to GO.

Take it up with Tyler Bearce then and tell him that the team is lying… go for it!

The quotes from Tyler Bearce that you provide do not claim that linking caused an increase in participation. He stated that after implementing linking among other changes to wvw they observed an increase in wvw population and activity. He further stated that it was a belief (note that a belief in something is different than an established fact) that they were moving in the right direction.

Trotting out quotes and inaccuratelt representing what they actually say does not support your position.

And stating a belief that is contrary to someone else’s stated belief is not calling them a liar. I am firmly of the belief that our sun is not the center of the universe, that doesnt mean that I consider Copernicus to be a liar.

Yes, a statement made by an individual, as I noted previously. Without verifiable data to support it, it is just a claim. “Because I said so,” isnt really a viable argument.

By the way, I am not asking for server linkings to be undone. There are, as with many things, positive and negative aspects to linkings. How one feels about it is likely influenced by how the particular positives and negatives balance for you.

I’m not getting angry or abusive.. let’s keep this friendly.. we can debate without being nasty. They have their stats and that’s all good.. I have what I actually have seen while playing the game. If more pugs came in than xp people left then nice for ANet but not so nice for the folks that really PLAY wvw.

The dev statement is no more supported by evidence available for review than is the case for the poster you quote.

Two individuals making statements. Neither providing evidence to support their claim.

Yes, you do counter facts with facts, but so far we have only unsupported claims, not established facts from all parties.

can’t figure out how to ride a horse?

How does one figure out how to ride an animal that doesn’t exist?

Humans in the real world have produced airships, spaceships, submarines, helicopters, etc, etc, etc…

and yet have not mastered the art of riding gryphons…

Replace “horse” with “dolyak.”

I guess I can get behind that. Mounts are available but riding one involves taking a reduction in speed.

Like I said, it’s not insurmountable. I will still keep gathering and I am not annoyed by it. I just think it might be nice to get some ability to build up the same effect in PvE. You know, not leech off our WvW players’ success, but work on it ourselves. I’m not assuming ANet will implement something like that, but I would welcome it.

I would like to point out that, since I mentioned, “entitled,” previously in this thread, this is not an example of being entitled and, if this is your view on the matter, I consider your take to be quite reasonable. Do take note that others, specifically those who received the comments about entitlement, did not express views even close to your own very reasonable stance.

And yes, the WvW system before megaservers is for me a perfectly reasonable argument against the PvE effect for Power of the Mists. The fact that is was built up in WvW, however, isn’t. The fact that it was intended to bring in people to WvW but failed, also isn’t. You can intent for something, but it will usually take on a life of its own after you release it into the world. And that’s what it ultimately is: not what you intend it to be, but what it comes to mean for the people who use/are affected by it.

Of course another thing that can, and does, happen when a system does not achieve its intent is that the producer changes it to be more in line with that intent. MMOs are constantly changing in order to either adapt the vision behind the game to the realities of the market/player base, or to keep focus on that vision as the game drifts away.

Personally I think that now was the worst possible time to remove the gathering buff. At a time when PvEers are being drawn into WvW in numbers I havent seen since the first months post launch, where they would be contributing to the buff to a degree not seen in years, it gets removed?

Odd.

Te be fair, two times in ten is regular if the interval is reasonable consistent.

Once per week I eat at the same restaurant. That is one meal in twenty one. I am a regular there.

Would 1 in 100 be regular if the interval is reasonably consistent? How about 1 in 1000?

If we go under the assumption that RNG within the game is consistently applied (e.g. an item with a 10% drop rate always drops 10% of the time on average) then most things could be considered consistent.

The only other part of ‘regularly’ would be frequency which was what I was addressing. I disagreed with 2/10 being regular just as 2000/10000 wouldn’t be regular either. If we apply it to ore/wood, that’s like 7/100 or 70/1000. .

Two in ten could very well mean once every few seconds. Seems pretty frequent to me.

They could name it to refer to both the desert and dragon. For that I suggest the name Sandy Claws.

Jack Skellington might sue.

Have you heard that name used before? Because I haven’t heard it. I mean, I just . . . I came up with it a couple of days ago and I thought it was good.

:P

I’ve always thought it sounds like Buster is saying “Is that you Sandy Claws?”

Because it was always existed before, hence it’s a loss now (that applies to WvW too obviously).

As was already stated, it’s a bonus from the actions of the WvW population. With its removal, buffs were added within WvW to compensate.

So a PvE only player get only a loss from it? I mean Zaraki is right on that, it was always existed before.
It’s like someone giving you X€/month since you were born just because your neighbourg is working hard, nobody ever complained about that. Then one day it suddenly stops, wouldn’t you complain for that? I’d surely do.

That would be entitlement.

I have never agreed with you more!

The basic sentiment that one would complain for not being rewarded for someone else’s work is mind blowing to me.

I think that the word, “entitled,” is tossed around entirely too much these days, but in this case…its almost an understatement.

They increased the potential rewards for participating in WvW. Its a net buff in terms of overall yield from WvW. You don’t get compensated for an overall buff.

Why dont asuras have long hair

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

It’s weird that Asura even HAVE hair. They evolved as a subterranean race, and subterranean races generally do not need hair as insulation because a) geothermal heat keeps the underground warm to hot, and b) without inclement weather, there’s no rain or snow to pose a potential threat to body temperature.

What? Moles. Voles. Gophers. Prairie Dogs. Woodchucks. Asura are not lizards or bugs, they are mammals as stated by a developer, and nearly all subterranean mammals have hair.

Asura don’t just live slightly underground like all the mammals you quoted though. They lived DEEEEEEP underground. Like, so far underground that entire generations of Asura never saw the sun. In evolutionary terms, that’s like comparing a fish that lives in a river to one that’s lived in deep underwater caves that’s completely lost its eyes because it had no need for them.

Honest question as I am not that familiar with Asuran lore, did they live that far underground for long enough for expectations to be expressed in evolutionary terms?

Also, not needing a physical trait does not automatically mean that evolution will get rid of it. If it is not an impediment to survival then natural selection will not necessarily eliminate the trait.

Pay real money for a statistical game play advantage, even if only a, “lil bit,” over other players…

I honestly hope that mount, if they do come, max speed is limited to what characters can already achieve, and that they require the same or similar opportunity costs that such movement speed does for characters currently.

NO! Leave it alone. If you do not like it then go play another game. This is not supposed to be easy to get. If you want easy to get stuff go back to PvE!!!!!!!!!

Could you please explain how leveling up crafting demonstrates either skill in wvw or dedication to the game mode?

Leveling up a profession do 500, take few minutes, or in worst, very worst case, 1 hour.

What all u need is just the gold.

How is that a measure of one’s participation and dedication to WvW?

Gold, got it. Participation in crafting, not going to happen.

I am not making demands. Nor am I intending insult or offense to anyone else. But a reward that consists of: if you dedicate yourself to playing long enough you will eventually be allowed, not to access the reward, but to spend time and gold in some other endeavor entirely. And that, tangential at best, endeavor will be what is rewarded.

i can’t believe u guys still cry about it. Anet should rename this game to snowflake wars.

Level up is a thing u need do ONCE time in a account, i did mine Armorsmith/Weaponsmith in once day 2 years ago then bye.

Lets go to guide to fast level up.

1. Save gold til reach something 150-200g
2.Open any guide on internet.
3.Buy materials.
4.Craft and level up.
——-
2 Years is like 600 days+. i just spend a few hours of one day to do it.U Have 599 days to WvW and forget about craft.

Ahh, yes, the special, “snowflake,” and, “crying,” insults." I am sure that you can do better than those old throwaways. Perhaps there is a guide online?

To reiterate:

How is crafting a measure of one’s participation and dedication to WvW?

Gold, got it. Participation in crafting, not going to happen.

I am not making demands. Nor am I intending insult or offense to anyone else. But a reward that consists of: if you dedicate yourself to playing long enough you will eventually be allowed, not to access the reward, but to spend time and gold in some other endeavor entirely. And that, tangential at best, endeavor will be what is rewarded.

Expressing a preference is not making demands, nor is it, “crying.” It is a consumer expressing a preference to a company that wants his money. Crafting is a distinctly unpleasant, to say the least, task (to me). I do not pay entertainment providers to be allowed to perform unenjoyable tasks. Masochism is not one of my faults.

When a reward is gated behind something that I neither enjoy nor actively dislike I may seek to earn the reward because getting it is a neutral action but having it is a positive. This is a net positive for me.

If the task is something that I actively dislike, crafting for example, then the reward is unlikely to provide a net positive experience. Far more likely is that the distasteful task will taint the reward, rendering the entirety of the matter a net negative for me.

Your demand has no logical basis simply, why part of the premise that you will have to craft every day.

What I have simply explained is that during the lifespam of a typical WvW player it is insignificant time.

Not even Pve players stop to craft everyday. Only those who do this are “TP players” who make bolt of damask every day.

Theres plenty of guides how to max-craft fast, its take less than 1 hour, and once u have done, good bye to leveling up craft.

http://gw2crafts.net/weaponcraft_fast.html

Even if they removed the craft, they are not foolish about the economy, they would simply put an NPC that would require the same materials or price in gold equivalent around 50g.

They have changed the requirements of the ascedend armors of Pvp and Fractals precisely because the ascedend Armor is one of the gold-sink of the economy, and not for “Pve x Pvp discussion”.

I have made no demand. You might want to reread the post you quoted. Its pretty clear on that point.

My preference does have its basis in logic:

It would be illogical for me to pay an entertainment service provider for the opposite of entertainment.

Thank you for the link, it is irrelevant though. I do not participate in crafting in GW2.

I did not express a preference for avoiding the cost of the armor. I have stated that I would be willing to pay more than the cost to craft it.

More wvwers trying to take hard earned pvers rewards. U know how many times I had to play the tp to get those crafting ranks up? It was a lot… a big number. Now that is some pve dedication. Now I will mark my achievements and tell you wvwers off like you tell me in all the threads which I create to complain/improve wvw. Those pve rewards are my rewards….. my rewards… (obligatory hash tags) #notyourwvwcandy #stayinwvw #fightgrubmoreoften #givememorepips #lowerrankreqonrewards

Did I do it right?

I am primarily a PvEer. I think, if your previously mentioned rank gain rate has held up you are likely higher rank in WvW than I.
