As others have said, piercing shots works with all of the skills for each weapon. The player base is sufficiently large and diverse enough where if the fact this class was terrible was all some kind of conspiracy people wouldn’t fall for it. No amount of videos is going to change this opinion of the class. Only real improvements from the developers will.
If queues were such a low priority then more effort should have been made encouraging overpopulated servers that suffer from queues nightly to have players transfer to lower populated servers. This means you open server to server transfers for a week and not just open up all servers for people to choose randomly.
I get the feeling Anet wants lb and gs to be power weapons, they just have no idea how to make them viable. They thinking nerfing our other weapons will make them stronger, hilarious.
Dat shortbow though. It’s so good.
I disagree, we just think it is good because it is our only weapon with the entire package (hard cc, soft cc, evade, condition application) and because it is mindbogglingly easy to use. If we had some weapons that were actually worth using other than in niche builds, I think we would all see how bland and normal the shortbow really is. As it stands now, it is our most basic option that works, so it appears strong.
What’s depressing is if LB was given an aimed shot skill it would probably be a complete and viable weapon.
I have a feeling the devs think a skill like that would be too hard for most players to use. That’s something that I think drags this profession down very much.
I wasn’t implying we hold down the button and the longer we hold it the more damage we do. I was saying we should just get an identical spell to the Warrior’s rifle burst skill. It can do the typical 25% less damage simply because we’re Rangers and ANet has a kitten for making us deal with a useless pet.

I think the best new pet they could add to this class is one that works.
So I’m not only flagged as a troll… I would like a Ram that can charge in a straight line and stun/knockback everything in its path like a necro pet.
The more important question is how you get 2k regen on a Ranger :/
What are you talking about?
Thief is king mobility and deserved.
Warrior comes second if he builds for it.
Proper Ele player and ranger can keep up with warriors.
Roaming guardian is very mobile aswel. So that leaves us with engineer, necro and mesmer.
-Engineer: can kite you for days, all the damage you put on him he’ll outheal. Give them more mobility and they’ll be OP.
-Necro: good one can face tank 2-3 players and often kill them aswel depending on their skill level. Dam panic button (F1)
-Mesmer: so many invulv, evades, stealth, clones and blinks. They are mobile as well, very mobile even. Just not in a straight line, only in fights. So as far as I can see, the classes that ain’t mobile have their own strong assets. Not every class is the same, that is why there are different classes to play. Another thing, mesmer, engineer and necro all have pulls. This counters mobility a bit.
If a Ranger or Ele can keep up with a Warrior they’re not spec’d in a way to actually kill the Warrior when they catch it. While the OP is probably a cleverly disguised request to nerf Warriors, their mobility is unbelievable for what the class is supposed to be.
I’d settle for any class balance though. When you can ask everyone to list the classes from most useful to least useful and the only difference in people’s list is if Engineers or Thieves should be ranked 6 or 7th ahead of Rangers it should be a clear sign something has gone wrong.
As many have said… this is a roaming class. If you enjoy playing a condi bunker/regen build you’ll be fine. If you want to play anything else, you should look anywhere else. Anyone who tells you they play full berserker in WvW should be ignored outright. It’s not a serious way to play and is only good for WvW videos where you show that 1 fight in 10 against some uplevel who didn’t crater your skull into the pavement. Don’t get me wrong… it’s fun. Rapid fire into a zerg in full zerker when you’re buffed and have signets active is insanely enjoyable. When you’re 1 shot by a thief, not so much.
A zerk ranger with a long bow is not a useless thing in a zerg. If you sit around worrying about the odd time a thief hits you you’re not playing to your strengths. There are many tools to deal with thieves burst including traited signet of stone, traps, rapid fire, fear, and lately sic’em. These are all tools a zerk ranger can employ to kill a thief that will not interfere with their ability to bring full dps to bear.
I’ll admit I’m not full zerk but a thief is generally nothing but a fun diversion from the chaos I’m causing at 1500 range. 1-1 I know there are many builds that can kill me too, but thats why I dont fight fair in those cases, I have great mobility too.
As I mentioned, it’s fun. Especially if you’re on a wall or at a choke point. The issue is things like retaliation will drop you insanely quick and when you’re downed you probably just rallyed a ton of people off you.
It’s fun. It’s awesome to down people quick. It’s just not that effective and can be a liability. I’m a firm believer in 2800 toughness at a minimum. Even that will get 2 or 3 shot by a Thief in seconds. But at least stray AE’s aren’t going to kill you and hopefully with 18-20k hp too, retaliation won’t kill you in a single barrage salvo.
I try to think if I were in a 15-20man zerg stomping group what would I bring with me. A glass ranger isn’t on the list. If I weren’t a Ranger, Ranger wouldn’t be on the list
Go Warrior and Guardian. Alone these are the 2 fastest classes to level. Together they form the backbone for all content in this game from PvE to PvP. Both classes can spec into healing builds and be nearly unkillable and still produce a surprising amount of damage in both PvE and PvP. Both classes can go all burst and deal insane damage very quickly while still being surprisingly tanky. Both classes have a large number of weapon options that are viable and while some may be better for different scenarios, nearly every weapon for each class has its use. The only drawback I see to this combo is the Guardian’s ranged option isn’t strong for real damage on moving targets, but the utility it provides is good and PvE targets don’t tend to move.
I honestly can’t think of a single drawback to playing a Warrior/Guardian pair.
I don’t think it needs to have its range restored. If they want to make the trait boost it up, that’s one thing. but the range it had invalidated the use of the longbow almost entirely. On the flip side, at 900 the shortbow feels kind of inadequate when put up against the Axe.
Change needs to happen, don’t get me wrong. But Shortbow at 900 I think I’m ok with to be honest.

Even if GS did eek out a bit ahead of the sword, a sword/warhorn ranger would probably be preferred in a group since they can give 100% fury uptime with a red moa and can help stack might since the warhorn also gives a blast finisher.
Also, you stack your pet with might and while that’s not a big benefit, it should be taken into account as well.
Now, personally, I’m not a fan of the 1h sword at all since the mechanics behind the 1h attack make me a sad panda. I think the GS has a much better feel to it, between the leap, block, and normal auto attack, but it lacks a lot of the utility that you get from bringing a warhorn. =(
Gs lacks in utility? It’s all utility. It’s a support weapon and that’s the problem. Auto really does need a dramatic increase in damage. If not, then give the class a trait to allow us to swap weapons faster so we can swap in to use maul and leave without concern much like how Warriors work.
It would be nice if we had a developer swing by and answer a few questions. We saw in the 10/15 patch preview thread that we have some weapon skill changes possibly coming in the future, but we didn’t get any substantive ones in the official patch. It would be nice to know what kind of stuff may be coming in the future.
As you mentioned with F2 skills, it would be nice to hear ANet officially comment on them. We’ve had individual players come in and try to assure us that ANet knows and is making changes from talking to them at events, but those comments don’t match up with a year’s worth of patches and red posts.
I think more than anything I want ANet to tell us what they want this class to do. Many of us don’t even know that much about this class. We’re here playing a class with no defined role or purpose in this game.
For a class with limited AE, no real burst, mostly single target condition application, split DPS with a pet that barely works, very little group utility, no WvW role, and no real power build option you’re not left with much else to fit this class into.
Some attention from ANet, even if it’s more smoke up our [censored] would be a welcome change.
I have to agree with Grieve. I honestly love the idea of this map and will probably enjoy fighting in it just for the scenery alone. But I play on FC. There already isn’t a large enough player base on that server and the ones it’s paired against to have something to do all day long. Effort MUST be taken to improve the population and coverage issues.
Since overflow now has a solution I don’t see why we can’t see lower populated servers merged in WvW. Especially since it’s quite rare indeed for the bottom tiered servers to ever see a queue on any individual map, let alone all 4 at once..
(edited by Atherakhia.4086)
I’m having trouble reading the pages at work. Does it say if players who don’t normally experience overflows will be able to play on the map? Is it also designed to host the GvG players? I believe they said the jumping puzzle thingy was a placeholder perhaps for this?
[edit…] answered above, thanks.
Just what this game needs… a third viable class to play.
Just curious… but has anyone actually tested this? Or is it just a tooltip issue?

Arrow Cart Hacks.
Class Balance (Rangers in particular).
1. Class Balance. Why do things move so slowly and why do things never seem to change for the better? Each patch we move more and more into a condition dominated meta with fewer and fewer classes capable of doing anything.
2. Game Modes. A lot of players don’t enjoy the take and hold style of map play. We’ve heard repeatedly why you’ve chosen this and we’ve mentioned repeatedly that we still don’t care and want more game modes. Ranked or not… we need CTF and DM.
3. Why is leveling so incredibly slow? While it’s great to pretend that a high rank player got there because of skill and effort, the reality is they got there through mind numbing grinding. It’s worse for people who don’t enjoy take and hold style maps. For many players they want only the finishers and there’s no way to get them other than eye bleeding torture right now.
Class Balance and why many classes don’t seem to carry their fair share of utility or damage and thus don’t get the same attention by groups looking to do PvE content.
Player/Guild housing.
Quality of life improvements such as account wide dyes, the option to buy skins for cultural/dungeon armor at a discount if you don’t want the stated gear, getting more value out of laurels, improving the loot drop rate for gear off hard encounters (like tequatl where I’ve ran him 20-30 times and have only 2 sunless runes as my reward).
(edited by Atherakhia.4086)
Can’t go wrong with Warrior or Guardian. We’ve seen these classes move steadily upward since launch with no sign of coming back down.
I duo with another ranger almost exclusively. We don’t really compliment each other in any way because the Ranger class doesn’t really synergize with anything. In fast paced combat, the class really only provides the water field to a group. Outside of that, there’s not much group utility in the class.
When we run together, our play style doesn’t change all that much from the way we play when solo roaming. He’s shortbow/greatsword with conditions (mostly celestial gear), and I’m longbow (and occasionally shortbow)/greatsword with power gear. We both run with a signet build.
If you’re up to changing classes I would suggest one that provides a lot of blast finishers and ranged CC to help her maintain a gap on the target. Thief or Engineer would be better, and the Engineer would be my preference.
It’s a technical limitation. The most you could hope for is for each class to get their own unique form of the various conditions in PvE only. May not be ideal, but you’ll never get more than 25 stacks. It’s the same reason AE cap will never be raised. It’s the same reason pets will forever be useless.
Technical limitation? Really? You have no idea about programming, do you? That’s not even a tiny little problem. Programmers literally are gods :P
I probably have a better grasp of computer programming than you do. But this is a server side latency issue, not a client side display issue. It can’t be resolved. They’ve said as much.
I used it for about half an hour yesterday. I felt it didn’t add anything to my playstyle at all. All I was using it for was to pick off Thieves after a zerg was wiped to ensure they couldn’t stealth. Worse still is I wasn’t even the one killing them. It was just my job to make sure the 1 guy didn’t stealth so everyone else could finish them off.
While it’s great that this class has a reveal now, I’m not sure it has any legitimate value. It felt more like trolling :/
I just don’t get the F2 animations and cast times. When I hit a button, I expect an action. Sometimes they don’t do it still. It should be an instant action.
They should have some kind of uniform cast time. This way the pet remains balanced to opposing players as they’ll be able to dodge or counter the pet if they want/need to.
It should only be about .5 second though. Certainly not the 1, 2, or even 3 seconds we have now. But you’re right.. when we push the button, the pet should use these abilities right then and there without any delay.
For as ‘difficult’ as Teq is, the rewards hardly seem worth it. I’ve done it about 20-30 times. I’ve managed to get nothing of value except 2 sunless runes for my efforts (so yea, nothing of value). Obviously a 100% chance to drop an ascended item is a bit excessive, but I’m tired of running the encounter for a bunch of greens that I’ll just salvage when I can get about the same amount of loot elsewhere. This is how most players feel and why they’ve stopped showing up.
ANet needs to expand on their token system some. Introduce a ‘master token’. Players can turn in 1 laurel, 100 dungeon tokens, 250 badges of honor, 1 guild emblem to get a ‘master token’. These master tokens can then be used to buy things of higher value. Say 50 toeksn to get an ascended weapon. 1 token to get a dungeon skin as opposed to the item. 1/2/3 tokens to get a cultural skin.
this way, regardless of what a player does, they’re awarded for their efforts. the player knows going in what amount of work is needed to get what they’re after. They can do whatever they want to get it.
Once you have a proper reward system in place, then you roll out the unique skins and such that have a stupidly rare chance to drop.
If certain content (like Tequatl) doesn’t get enough attention under this system then it means it’s too difficult and needs to be toned down.
It’s a technical limitation. The most you could hope for is for each class to get their own unique form of the various conditions in PvE only. May not be ideal, but you’ll never get more than 25 stacks. It’s the same reason AE cap will never be raised. It’s the same reason pets will forever be useless.
Not making a Warrior or Guardian at this point in the game would be suicide. No other class gets the same level of attention from the developers, no other class is as in high demand despite being the most common classes you run accross, and both are top of the line in WvW and sPvP.
The last classes you’ll ever want to consider are Ranger, Engineer, or Thief for the exact opposite of the above.
You guys are not the mesmer or ele, so stop the QQ.
Check this graph out.
http://www.chartgo.com/share.do?id=05adfec8aa
You had the HIGHEST representation at the latest MLG tourney
Done, do not complain anymore. My main class had about 5%, and eles were not harmed in the making of that tourney.
Stop the QQ.
Are you somehow under the impression that a class can have problems and also do well? This class is a strong roaming/1v1 class. Go read the WvW forums for a change and see how well the class does there.
ANet makes all balance changes with strictly sPvP in mind. They’ve probably already come to the conclusion that this WvW league will be an utter disaster and will never hold such an event again.
That said, if ANet is capable of putting in logic like this I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t put in similar logic where if there were 6 people under an AE and 1 was blocking it would choose the 5 unblocking ones first. Baby steps I guess…
I don’t play a ranger, but just out of curiosity, whats the problem with Rangers?
To me they seem really useful and powerful…[I do agree with the Axe thing though… why give Ranger an Axe anyway? Thats just stupid]
All boils down to the pet. They don’t work well. The class’ damage is handicapped because of them and they don’t work properly. Haven’t worked properly since the game has come out a year ago. ANet doesn’t even acknowledge the class has issues publicly.
Outside of the pet, the class doesn’t have a role to fill in WvW. It offers no valuable group utility other than a water field that just had its duration reduced. It offers no real burst. It has very poor AE. Its damage is much lower than other classes. It just doesn’t do anything, and this is the opinion of the WvW community at large and not just the Rangers.
The class is a passable roamer, but doesn’t work well when dealing with more than 1v1 odds. This is why it does well in sPvP where most of the time the combat is even numbered and equally skilled. sPvP also has the luxury of having much less stray damage flying around so pets actually survive longer.
PvE/Dungeons has a lot of everything mentioned above. The pet utility isn’t useful. The damage is below that of other classes to the point where the benefits of taking a Ranger are questionable at best. Often times you’d be better taking another DPS class and losing out on the limited utility the class brings simply because of the damage deficit. Pets are destroyed by AE (this is why their health was improved).
Really aside from dueling and leveling the Ranger doesn’t do much else.
I think what annoyed me more than anything was how the focus of this patch was supposedly to increase the group utility of various classes. The Ranger class is probably the least useful group oriented class in this game and we received no real bonus whatsoever?
We got pet improvements for group utility but if you compare the utility the pets provide against how other classes provide the same thing I assure you they aren’t on a 40 second cooldown with a 3 second cast time and a 10 second duration.
ANet has proven patch after patch, month after month, that they haven’t a clue what they want to do with this class. It has no direction and no real worth whatsoever. At this point I think we need ANet to come around and tell us what they want this class to do so we can at least focus our feedback on that. Us wishing this class was something that clearly ANet doesn’t want it to be has clearly been a complete waste of time.
Either ANet doesn’t know what they want to do with this class or they simply don’t care about this class. This forum has put forth thousands upon thousands of ideas, suggestions, and complaints and there is absolutely ZERO proof ANet has read any of it.
After a year of nothing going on how can we honestly think anything but ANet simply doesn’t care?
ANet either doesn’t know the sad state power based rangers are in or they simply don’t care. Given how so little has been done in a year it’s hard to imagine anything but the latter.
I still think the biggest problem is unresponsive pets and F2 abilitiies, but a total lack of real burst, poor weapon scaling, and a lack of onUse skills to add damage is a major let down with this class.
Roll for Initiative and Withdraw both cleanse immobalize. Since Lightning Reflexes doesn’t, why would you expect to go anywhere?
The issue they were talking about was how half of the roll was spent rolling place even though it was suppose to cleanse movement impairing effects. So you spent half the time rolling in place and then finally rolled about 300-600 yards backward.
Now the real question is if Lightning Reflexes needs a buff or not. The obvious answer is yes.
It was a change for mesmers a ways back. It was probably the percentage needed to increase them to some magic number (10k hp or something).
I would love nothing more than the pet’s F2 abilities to work and for the pet to be a benefit to the class instead of a hindrance. But at some point you have to ask yourself why things haven’t been fixed? The game has been out a year and these are issues leftover from beta. Is it too complicated to fix? Does ANet simply not care? Do they not know? These are the questions the players are asking given how little improvement the class has seen over the past year. If the core mechanic of the class can’t work then it’s time to redesign it.
There’s just no real direction or focus for the class. Players have asked for months what ANet wants the class to do and still no one knows.
This is a problem with the whole class though. This class just doesn’t offer much group support or utility. It has been complained about for months. This is why the class gets [censored] on so much in WvW and GvG threads.
While group buffs on shouts would be a welcome change, they need to do this in many other areas too.
I think we’re missing the reason for this. Consider the following:
When new people join the game this late, they are not the die-hard GW1 people or even the people tempted over from WoW, they are the newer, casual gamers.
What do these gamers play? Why they play the likes of Ranger, Warrior and Elementalist as stylised on TV and films.
Ranger gets a buff to the one thing these casual gamers will need in the first few levels, a really tanky pet. Game seems easy, appealing and as such, they stay. Warrior is already renown for easy-mode and Elementalist – well most new people to the game will go straight for that staff which also got a buff.
They didn’t balance any class for fairness, they balanced ranger as ANET consider it a newbies class. This is why they buffed the pets in PvE only and also why nobody there plays as a ranger or represents the class effectively – newbies don’t watch that kind of stuff and the rest are just the silent majority
If this concept were correct, they’d have changed Sword attack to not leap. It’s also complete BS that the Ranger style classes draw newbies. If anything, Thief classes draw more newer players to them. Or Mages. Things with flashy numbers and edgy gameplay.
But even if they do attract new players, and new players want a jack of all trades class, it’s the developers responsibility as game designers to ensure their product is both balanced and rewarding. Something this class most certainly is not.
There are ways to make a skill floor low and a skill ceiling high to entice in new players but reward those that stick with the class. They’ve failed in this regard and in many other ways with this class.
Wow, 2 red posts?! That’s officially more than we’ve received in a year I think?!
It’s time for ANet to step up. If it’s a problem they simply can’t resolve the pets need to be removed. It’s that simple. The game has been out for a year and the core mechanic this class is designed around has never worked properly. Why should players be penalized any longer if the problem is simply too much to fix?
Make all the pets do the same damage, reduce that damage to a miniscule fraction of what it’s capable of now, and buff all ranger coefficients and base skills to be in line with other classes.
I’d love for nothing more than the pets to work… but it has been a year. Stop wasting our time.
I still think they should just limit us to 1 pet (no swapping between 2 pet nonsense) that we summon for Xs or until it dies, are balanced around the pet just being extra damage instead of using it all the time (like how they’d balance phantasms or burst skills etc), BM could make the pet last longer, or hell even just leaving it as is…
Problem solved, and people could then play with or without the pet if they choose…
Pretty much… it’s effectively a unique DOT for the Ranger class. Since it has been a year with such little progress the least they could do is fit them with explosive collars.

Unresponsive pets has to be the single biggest problem with this class. It has been a problem since day one and has little/no improvement since. The very core mechanic this whole class is designed around doesn’t work ANet… for a year! And people honestly question why we have people making threads on a daily basis for the pets to be removed completely and our damage increased by 27%?
ANet has made a pretty desperate push over the past week trying to convince players they read these forums and take player input seriously. How do issues like this go unfixed for so long? If it can’t be fixed, then get rid of it!
Oh god…
Can’t they get anything right?
Don’t see warriors or guardians complaining…
so we got gs nerf ..seriously 7% more dmg for 2 longer cd is that a bad joke right ? warriors became walking jaggernauts and they give to ranger this crap …
I imagine it’s the vulnerability duration and not the skill cooldown. At work so can’t verify. But when I read it, that’s the impression I got.
Has anyone confirmed the pet hp increase works in WvW? Couple threads on general saying it isn’t increased in WvW.
Of course not. They just stated “PVE maps only” in the patch notes. First thing I did when I logged on was go into WvW. Pet still died easily. ROFL
…
Unbelievable. I mean seriously… this is completely unbelievable.

Pet Survivability: While it’s great this patch is improving pet health by nearly 72%, a pet engaged in WvW lasts on average about 8 seconds. And that’s doing nothing with the pet but having it sit next to you, on passive, unengaged and waiting to use a Howl to fear someone off me. A 72% increase on this is only 14 seconds. Not even enough time to use a second F2 ability. On the plus side, and in a strictly roaming capacity, it actually has helped with things like Protect Me and using the pet overall. But the failing of this class is group engagement, not dueling and roaming.
Solution: The easiest solution to this problem is to simply provide Aegis for the pet whenever the Ranger uses a dodge or a skill that also evades. There should be an internal cooldown of 4 seconds placed on this so a Ranger with #1 set to autocast on Greatsword will only get an aegis every other rotation.
Pet Responsiveness: This has been an issue brought up pretty much nonstop since the game has come out. It has had absolutely 0 improvements in a year. We’ve occasionally heard Dev’s comment ‘they’d like to improve it’ and yet here we are, a class mechanic that can’t even be said to work 50% of the time even if the pet were alive.
Solution: F2 abilities need to fire off instantly. If this means to stop attacking and interrupt any other active ability the pet is currently using, so be it. But F2 abilities need to activate the moment F2 is pressed. Not 2 seconds later, not 5 seconds later. This doesn’t mean they should be instant however. They should still have kitten cast time to ensure some level of balance is maintained.
Burst: With the addition of Remorseless I was starting to think the class would start to get some burst options now. Unfortunately, nothing has come of it. The only reasonable use of the Remorseless trait is to stealth and then Maul someone. Just like the only reasonable option for Moment of Clarity is the typical Swoop+Hilt+Maul combo. The reason for this is because Maul is really the only heavy hitting skill this class has.
Solution: Remove Spike Trap. Make Barrage a skill. Barrage will now immobilize all targets on the first wave and also apply bleeding for each wave of arrows. It is now effectively a ranged Spike trap that does more damage and doesn’t need 30pts to work. Replace Barrage with an Aimed Shot on the longbow.
At this point they should give up with it. The game isn’t even balanced at the core. If the classes themselves aren’t balanced how could we possibly improve upon sPvP, WvW, or Dungeons?
They need to post a thread on each class forum and take the time to actually read what is being discussed by the players for a change. We’ve waited months for today’s balance patch and unless you play a Warrior or Guardian, most classes are considering it a miss.
The canned response is of course ’it’s been life for 5mins… how could you form an opinion’. But with how little has changed for a lot of classes, there’s really no excuse for this anymore.
Can the idea of WvW, sPvP, and Dungeon threads and get your classes in order.
So it’s safe to say ANet didn’t read this thread I guess?
So it turns out the sneak peak was all the Ranger class was going to get with the exception of a handful of mediocre pet enhancements that don’t address the problems with the pet.
3 months of nothing for…nothing. Oh well, always next month. When’s the next MMO come out with a Ranger class? ESO should be out soon, right?
