Vote for thread closure.
If people still have reason to post in this thread and they’re not being mean towards others, then this thread should remain open. Its been a very hot thread for a while now. Closing it down prematurely may just make others create new threads to keep making sure their voice is heard. What then would you do? Lock down all threads with a mention towards the Meta? No.
So…
Players: “Curse you, Anet! Give us loot already!”
Players again: “Curse you, Anet! Stop filling my inventory already!”
Not only that, monsters just need to be smarter. If faced with 5 players with melee weapons always stacking, Monster will kite while continuously firing AE attacks at the players with a ranged weapon.
And bam, no more melee group stack.
And you think people would actually like this?
I would like it, actually.
Once you experience smooth nice runs – you’ll never turn back and realise this is how the game was meant to be played and can really enjoy the content.
Several nights a week I experience these nice smooth runs you’re talking about. The only things I can say in their favor are that 1) They’re fast, 2) They increase my gold count, and 3) They give me more time with friends. Now some may say, “Isn’t that enough?” Perhaps it should be. But it is not enough for me. There is no enjoyment out of the content whatsoever. The enemy AI is severely lacking, large portions are allowed to be completely skipped, and combat mechanics have been “streamlined” to such a degree that “combat” has long past become a joke.
When voicing my opinion during these dungeon runs, to my friends, most grudgingly agree with me. The sad truth, as I see it, is we’ve become addicted to speed clears and all that comes with it. The faster people get, the more they feel they can never go back — even if the difference is only one minute from the previous run. I do not hold to this. I would rather have new content, strong enemy AI, and far longer dungeon runs. I want to enjoy what I’m doing, when I’m doing it.
Many speed clearers would even agree to that last… but they would inevitably state that the rewards gained would have to be dramatically increased in order to make it worth it. Perhaps this is true. * shrugs * Again I’m not so certain. The enjoyment gained from a spectacular dungeon would be enough for ME.
I’m pretty sure I’m in a minority with this viewpoint. Which is totally fine… But please don’t think that everyone would enjoy dungeons the way they are just because you do.
With that said — Happy dungeon raiding.
Ascended and legendaries are luxury items. It’s supposed to be expensive, and a long-term goal. That’s the reason why anet make it time-gated.
+1
I don’t fully understand how people can whine about not being able to have everything they want — NOW. Ascended and Legendary items are supposed to take time. Its so sad that people demand every aspect of this game to be available for them today and for very little.
There are 6 people out of 150 at teq whose job isn’t DPS.
As a person that regularly volunteers for defense teams, I’d like to say “Hello”. But I imagine you’re being a smart little kitten * pets * and just boiling everything down to DPS and DPS only.
Such a cute little kitten. * pets *
I guess the op is so ignorant that he thinks that Teq isn’t a dps-fest because you can’t crit him. He has also made another post similar to this one in the guardian subforum.
At this point he’s just crying out loud how much he despises the zerker meta.To be fair compared to most fights it isn’t really a DPS-fest.
In most fights you can just stand on the enemy and hit it until it dies. With Tequatl you actually have to organize and split up in order to complete it.
In this case, Lordkrall is correct. It is not a simple “DPS-fest”. While damage is key to killing everything in this game — this boss actually requires more to it than just standing there pressing one and afking (as World Bosses are).
I enjoy the Teq fight even now.
Still wish they’d give the same sort of makeover to Jormag, Shatterer, and even Queen Karka (as I believe its still considered a “Legendary Boss” by Anet).
Yes, I would think back to that creature in the video many times. It still gives me faith that underwater combat will see a boost at some point…. some year.
Figured I’d bump this thread one last time in hopes of getting some kind of answer. I know, expecting an answer to anything on these forums is rather foolish…. but one can hope.
This is an MMO so joining a guild that shares your interests will only be a good thing for you.
I must admit that I felt the community was much better before the megaserver system was introduced. I cared for my neighbors, so to speak, but now I don’t. One of those old wounds that will not heal.
(edited by Azhure.1857)
Well high risk is subjective I guess but there’s no arguing that zerker is HIGHER risk than say, Nomads or clerics facerolling.
Personally I only see the risk to zerkers/glass players in PvP/WvW environments. PvE and dungeons? Not so much. Oh so your dungeon took 2 minutes longer than you wanted? * sad face * Oh you died 3 times at this event? * pout * That’s just horrible.
It is low-risk/high-reward and not the other way around. That is my gripe with it.
Serious question, what gear set gives a higher risk than zerker?
What are you risking when wearing zerk gear and specced towards damage? Where is this “high risk” that you speak of? It isn’t “no risk” but it IS “low risk” still.
Zerk = low risk/high reward
Most other specs = low risk/low reward
Threads like this one really amaze and annoy me. They pop up every week, rapidly explode, with a big portion of people talking past each other, throwing around the same old arguments again and again, and yet I still don´t understand why exactly some people think the established meta is supposedly bad for the game.
So, if any of those people could concisely and in a structured manner explain to me why purely offensive, high-risk/high-reward stat combinations being the core of optimized builds is wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.
Well I suppose I’m different than most of the Anti-Meta people in this thread. I’m not here for its effect on community and/or the LFG tool.
No I’m actually against the Zerk Meta because of what you have in bold. Its untrue and I think you and I know it. It is low-risk/high-reward and not the other way around. That is my gripe with it.
I’d like to see new fur and skin colors and markings/patterns/tattoos/horns/ears added. Maybe even new tails too for Charr.
I’m fine with the tail situation because they’re both nice and its one of the main ways to tell the genders apart.
I had considered adding the fur patterns for Charr, glow patterns for Sylvari, and skin markings for Asura — But I thought that may be asking for too much. Would be great though.
Yes. There are two kits. One for hairstyling and another for everything.
Just want to know if the races will have more options other than face/hair. I play a charr and would love new horn options. (Unfortunately there are few that I really like and most of my alts have the same ones.)
Would really like to know if there will ever be new options for character makeover/creation beyond that of hairstyles and faces? If so, roughly when could we expect them?
- New Horns for Charr
- New Tattoos for Norn
- New Ears for Asura
- New Ears for Sylvari

And no, this has been discussed ad nauseam and mounts are for the most part a way to flaunt a players eliteness or wealth.
giggles
Whereas the point of GW2 is to get expensive, pretty skins and AFK in DR/LA.
Not arguing in favor of mounts or directing this at you, Behellagh, I just find that reasoning to be a little silly :-)
Also, legendary weapons. giggles more
Actually it is not “the point” in my gameplay of GW2, thank you very much.
I have no legendary weapon after over two years, nor do I even use other flashy exotic skins. My armor leaves much to be desired…. though that could also be a lack of choices for my charr.
But sure – lets go with the reasoning being silly. * giggles *
Since when do they ever show care with charr skins?
I’m being totally serious in asking that question. >.<
NO. Again.
…. and again.
…….. and again.
So we’re boiling down to:
I think the argument is that, while many types of gear are viable in PvE, zerker is almost universally the correct choice, especially in older content (ie dungeons) and that’s very dull.
Active defenses are good gameplay, but they’re unrelated to stats, which is a lost opportunity for build diversity. Condition damage mechanics are also part of the problem.
Pretty much. It’s my main issue with the ‘Zerk Meta’.
Well the conclusion is clear: those that hate the meta should all form a guild designed to play with those that hate it.
I’m ready to open up my dead bank/RP guild for this purpose if I can get enough to join it.
House of Ishida [Ishi] will become such a guild for those that want to play the game the way it was meant to be played: NO ZERKER META!
Baiting remarks aside…
Speaking as a “filthy zerker elitist” (;P), this sounds like a wonderful idea. And, a much better way to approach the “problem” than complaining about the meta, like so many have done in the past and present (hell, and future).
Edit Might want to mention NA/EU (I’m guessing NA from your sig), and make a new thread about it (though it will quickly get moved out of this subforum if you make it here).
Its not the zerker gear itself that bugs me (I have it too and full set!) as much but its everything that goes with it.
The stacking in a corner and running past mobs that would normally melt anyways in 10 seconds flat no matter what you wear, just to get me killed for being the slower computer specs or class or both. It just doesn’t promote smart play and knowing your class well. Its just stack and Press 1 and sometimes use PBAOES and a heal skill!
And the “play our way or never be in a party.” cause everyone has to “Can’t beat them? Join them.” really makes it impossible to get any groups. Even for non dungeons as no one wants to do anything but beat dungeons as fast as possible over and over for money. I did find better and faster methods for making gold and not have to deal with any of this anymore.
I need achievements for stuff but nope no one wants to do that as they are stuck in this meta and only dungeons matter in GW 2. So I get kittened and rage at the meta for different reasons. And here I am, again.
Also the favoritism of certain paths over others is getting old. I’m lucky I got all 4 arah paths done. It did take me almost 2 years, however. “Sorry we only do 1 and 3 <insert dungeon here>. Path 2 is not worth doing cause money is too hard to get.” Just help the god kitten achievement hunters for once? Maybe they’ll help you in the future in return? Ever thought of that?
I watched an old vid on youtube in the early days of gw 2 with the Old AC path 2 (not the Ghost Busters crap) and it was an hour 30 minutes long run of that path, complete with a skilled and balanced group (save a lv 46 thief Asura that died to every big champ/legendary only casue of his level) that fought everything and did it well. Even Kohler which we now get behind a pillar on the opposite side and have everything on top of us, they fought beautifully in the old way he was fought!
1. they did not stack
2. they did not skip anything
3. they had fun
4. they probably didn’t care about levels or gear.
5. they still did it faster than I ever done it full clear. I took upwards 3-4 hours for me and a PUG.
6. they used every mechanic at their disposal. This shows true skill that doesn’t exist anymore, all because of a stupid meta.
+1 Thank you for your post.
This is so pathetic…
I firmly believe the crux of this issue comes from the rewards mentality, which is in part due to the lack of a unique game play environment. People are so focused on loot, that everything otherwise is either left behind or optimized & utilized to get to that reward in the quickest way possible.
If only Anet had game play that was more complex, meaningful and exciting. Then the reward aspect would be shifted to the combat itself; instead of trying to minimize combat time for shinies.
I agree with you here. Its horrible, IMO, that we’re so hyper-focused on the greatest rewards in the quickest way possible – over anything else. Don’t get me wrong… I love looting too. But I would much prefer a game that was challenging and fun, one that I felt a fair amount of pride by my growing bank account in game. But I don’t here.
“Yay. More farming.”
“Okay. Got my daily dungeons in.”
“Woot. Another WBT down.”
I mean what is the point if there isn’t at least a little bit of pride in our efforts? There is nothing to be proud of with many of the cheesy combat mechanics we take advantage of on a regular basis.
My problem with Berserker gear is not the LFG system. I don’t use it or zerker gear, myself, but I have no trouble grouping with friends and most of them have it. The problem is that a Berserker player, especially one traited towards DPS, has equal access to the rest of the new trinity as those without zerk gear do. So it makes everything else subpar in comparison, with few exceptions.
I don’t know if I’m explaining my feelings on the matter as well as I should….
If you’re using a human guardian, I suggest you do the following things:
1) Go to the trading post, and buy some blue level 0 gear. If you can find it, you want the chest, pants, boots, and gloves for the armor, and a staff. +Power on all of them. Settle for less if you can’t find them, but you’ll want to do this.
2) Get 4 different Runes for the armor, each of them being a +10 Power for the first one slotted. Put them into the armor you just got.
3) Get a Sigil of Bloodlust, and a Sigil of Speed, and put them both into the staff.
4) Put all these in the bank, and grab them out as soon as you can with a new character. They’ll see you through the personal story fairly well, just make sure to put them back into the bank when you’re ready to delete. None of these should be soulbound, just accountbound, so you can reuse them.
The staff with the two sigils is the really important part here. Building up Bloodlust stacks is a HUGE boost at the lower levels, and the speed from the Sigil of Speed can help you to cover a lot of ground when you’re out and about. If you don’t want to spend on the armor yet, at least get the staff.
You do know that you can’t do the personal story until level 10 now, right? Lvl 0-2 gear isn’t optimal anymore. Or so I don’t think it is.
Shame on you for opening a second thread on the same topic as the other “meta” thread that is not but a handful of spaces below this one.
Its as low as multiple mount threads.
Shame on you.
We don’t have guild halls because ArenaNet hasn’t created them and implemented them.
Snap.
Like I said in the last Mounts thread – why is it the same people are bumping a thread on mounts if they don’t like it?
It’s fine to not want mounts (I don’t want them either!), but don’t complain about Mount threads if you’re gunna keep bumping each one that comes!
The problem with that argument is, if you don’t declare your opposition, then those in favour of mounts will simply declare that they are the majority and should be listened to because those in the anti-mount crowd have refrained from posting a comment or making their opposition known. Unfortunately, bumping threads like this is a necessary evil when making sure that the anti-mount voice is still heard as long as these mounts threads continue to be created.
Anet need to declare once and for all what their stance on mounts is.
+1 Well said. * applauds *
Best guess about 16 to 18 hours of play with breaks.
A full work week is 38 hours for most people… then comes family/work at home and finally you have that little bit of time for yourself, unless you’re too tired at the evening to bother logging in. Happily I do not have a full time job + a family to take care of. I study at university and I still have busy weeks where I log in maybe 3 hours in a whole week.
So yeah I totally understand people who say leveling is too slow, because for them (and occasionally for me too) you don’t want to spend that 1 hour of pleasure doing something you dislike: i.e. leveling. Instead you want to get the fullest enjoyment out of your time, and then you get a hate toward leveling.
Oh yeah, not to mention: those 18 hours you speak of would take the aforementioned people close to 2 full months.
Then I would suggest not creating alts for those that are PvE oriented and to stay in HotM for those that are PvP oriented. Wanting something and expecting to get it just because you want it, and not because you worked at it, is illogical.
Again, it has nothing to do with the meta, it’s just a player and content issue.
How is it not a meta issue? Even if only indirectly?
If all that mattered was pumping out damage, without fear of failure or death, and the game was designed to reward getting “taps” — How does that not lead to players going zerk to get more DPS in? With or without regards to speed.
Also: please don’t call me a liar. I’m not in this. It may be hard for you to believe, and that’s fine, but you don’t know me or my friends.
*Mail-O-Tron
Please, for the love of all that is good in the world, NO.
Yes. Why don’t we blow up all of Tyria, Cantha, and Elona and walk away from the game. No more wars, no more fighting. World peace achieved and there is no need to play the game anymore.
Snap. * drops mic and walks away *
I believe your guildmates are just getting carried by other players, or they are just terrible liars.
I don’t believe they’re lying. However I must agree with you that they aren’t putting 100% into GW2, which doesn’t even need to be said its so obvious, but is it not more telling that they don’t have to?
Regardless, I think this is derailing.
(I have guildmates that play GW2, watch tv shows, AND play console games all at the same time — I like them but I don’t think that should be possible)
What are these guildmates of yours doing in GW2 while doing all that at the same time? Solo Lupi?
No, not solo Lupi. Er…. at least not that I’m aware of.
- Dungeons
- World Boss Train
- Guild Missions
EDIT: Let it be known that I can’t do such a thing. I just know that some of them are on a daily basis. The fact that they can, no matter their amazing multitasking prowess, is not a good thing in my book. At least not for this game.
(edited by Azhure.1857)
Well that does say that most people haven’t figured out the mechanics – and didn’t you say this game is dumbed down? Welcome to the discrepance of new and veteran players. But most people take advise actually.
BTW: I went zerkers when I was a new player as well, not because I knew of the “meta” but because the stats sounded best.
Well then let me apologize if I have ever let you die, stay dead, or will in the future.
I do believe the game has been dumbed down and fear that it will continue to be taken down that path. Regardless of how easy it is people will still continue to die. They have no reason not to. I’m not an elitist sitting back and laughing at the dead at events. I’m an old fart (aka veteran player) that has become apathetic to those dying when there is no reason to and instead of laughing at the dead, I sigh in frustration. I know the difference between someone that is glassy and someone that can take a hit before going down, or better yet knows how to dodge and use combat mechanics to stay alive. Or knows that some bosses, based on their AI and mechanics, aren’t wise to face-tank.
Am I asking too much, Jana? That people should try to succeed at an event AND stay alive at the same time? That the game be challenging enough that it requires brain function from its players? That it not be dumbed down to such a low level that people can succeed in game at many, not all I know, things by pressing one and doing other things in the background at the same time? (I have guildmates that play GW2, watch tv shows, AND play console games all at the same time — I like them but I don’t think that should be possible)
I’m not sure if this has been brought up before and if has sorry.
I’ve been doing the world event chain for months now and have noticed that some folks playing the Ranger class have been using KB as a form of trolling, by knocking back content out of the reach of other players purposely. This is doing nothing but kittening people off and causing animosity.
I don’t know if it’s possible, but could we get a range adjustment on KB applied so it’s not knocking stuff back out of the range of other classes ranged capability? I really don’t see a point in KBing mobs more than 900.
Thanks
Oh noes! You have to pay attention to what you’re hitting with Press #1 and Face-tank world zerg train tactics. The horror that it may move and players would be forced to follow and …. (wait for it) …. (its coming) …. react. * gasp * Oh no I didn’t.
Yes I realize that some rangers don’t always use the correct skills at the best of times. I do. However the long knockback also has its place. Tequatl battery defense comes to mind first.
PvE is already so disgustingly easy… please don’t whine over something like this.
(edited by Azhure.1857)
What is boring and what is not is strictly in the eyes of the beholder. I, for example, do not find levels 1-60 boring at all. I have 14 characters too, mind, so I think I have the experience and the right to speak towards this.
To Whom It May Concern,
Every time I get a Shatterered, Broken, or Bent Lockpick I feel like I’ve been kicked in the gut. Was this your intention? To laugh at us old Guild Wars veterans and the good memories we had of whole, unbroken lockpicks that could be used? To spite us with never being able to claim a lockpick from a bandit or pirate without breaking it first?
I propose that intact lockpicks become a rare drop AND that they have a low chance of opening Black Lion chests. What say you?
Not sure about lockpicks but keys drop from mobs although very rare. Levelled 6 to 80 and only got 2 keys from world drops.
Black Lion chests are common and keys very rare, for the main purpose of you buying more keys from the shop.
They have to try and generate some income somehow.
Please see my post directly above yours. I explained my argument for them. Its not defined down into percentages but its there… sorta. None of you need worry, though, as I’m not getting much in the way of support over this idea.
Any artificer worth his salt should be able to repair a broken lockpick.
You make a fair point, good sir. I tip my hat to you.
Step 1: Release new zone with few Waypoints.
Step 2: Sell Teleportation consumables in Cash Shop.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit.
Step 5: Realize that most players don’t give a kitten and don’t use them.
Step 6: Weep.
For the thousandth time: NO.
If you just try to DPS – you will be dead.
Surprise surprise – after two years we still find people dying in mass at events that are so bloody easy and predictable. What does that say about the state of the game and its current meta?
I like skilled players that wear Berserker gear and know how to fight but stay alive too. Unfortunately so many are favoring the gear type and DPS heavy builds without care. As I’ve said in previous posts — there is no fear of failure or death. Just max your DPS – get your taps in – then sit back and watch a movie.
I sound like an absolute troll these days when I express my distaste for the dead in game. I no longer go out of my way to revive people. Which is so incredibly sad…. I used to all the time. I’d drop what I was doing and rush over. Now, unless you’re a friend or guildie, I don’t give a kitten. How tired I am… I wish I could take pity on the dead or dying again. I wish I could think that they weren’t most likely glassy and not caring if they got killed… But I just can’t do that anymore.
It isn’t just a Meta: Zerk issue here. The combat mechanic and enemy AI are responsible for creating this mess.
I would very much like to see you pull that off in a lvl 50 fractal.
Or Arah, or other dungeons too, try 1111111 faceroll the spider in AC for example.
Or try 111111 faceroll the Mordrem bosses at Indigo, or or or
But of course people like to say the “1111 faceroll” argument and think it’s valid
‘Cause it is. Just because there are a few cases that you can count where a player needs to at least keep one eye on their screen doesn’t mean that “1111 faceroll”, as he calls it, doesn’t exist in the majority of PvE.
1. BLCs and BLKs are ANet’s cash cow. I seriously doubt they are going to implement anything that allows them to be opened for free.
2. If they did do so, I see it working one of two ways:
2.a. Lockpicks either fail too often for most people’s liking, which exacerbates complaints of RNG for RNG, or
2.b. Lockpicks are too rare for most people’s liking, which exacerbates complaints of RNG for RNG for RNG.
3. Making these drops with any kind of reliability would turn someplace into yet another farming plot with all the venom those seem to engender lately.
1) That’s why I would only see them as a rare drop and even then have a chance at opening a BL chest. I wouldn’t want them to replace BL keys. For all those players that don’t farm their personal story and have no map left to complete (or choose not to complete), perhaps this could be a good window to open them up more to BL chest rewards. Say they eventually get a lockpick that opens up a BL chest – perhaps that would be enough enticement to want to open more?
2) Again. I don’t see how that argument is rational in any way. Granted, human beings aren’t always rational – BUT – it is still true that A chance of opening a chest > No chance of opening a chest No matter how much you say people would rage, that statement is no less true.
3) Wouldn’t want them to drop with any reliability. Rare drop. It would be up to Anet to do the math and see how often they would need to drop and what % of them would be successful at opening BL chests…. so they could still keep BL keys high in demand.
I think you’re over-reacting.
And all the people who have used mesmer portals to finish JPs, get to difficult-to-reach locations, take a shortcut?
The mesmer is the one who opens the portal, he is helping others.
The one using the teleportation consumable isn’t helping others, he is just helping himself. Furthermore, Portals are limited by range and by playercount. I assume there will be no range limitation for the consumable. The person taking the portal is just helping himself, as well. The consumable is limited by player count (one player can teleport to one friend). Plus, the consumables are a one-time-use item, unlike the portals which can be cast every minute or whatever. I see no difference between someone asking for and taking a mesmer portal and using the teleport consumable. Both are just fine; if they want to be lazy, then they can go right ahead.
Simple: The mesmer can choose to not open a portal.
…. What exactly is the counter argument that you are making here?
As I understand it, it is also a one time use. Am I wrong?
Nothing to go crying over.
I have a human female, sylvari female and norn male ranger (was norn female).
For me it all comes down to cosmetics. However the one drawback to Norn is the slower movement animation which makes me feel like the character is moving slower and I really do not care for the female norn “Ugh” sounds (like being knocked down).
The sylvari female has some rather ridiculously overly dramatic sounds, especially with greatsword.
But what about the Death by Snu Snu?
As a veteran who played GW1 for 8 years: HELL NO!
A simple “No” or “I do not support this” would have been sufficient. Thanks for sharing though. I don’t understand the hate and opposition to this idea. Really, I’ve tried to understand it. But I just don’t.
I think we should have to combine 50 or so to make a Black Lion Key. That would make it more fun. I get these broken ones and shake my head. I think all broken items should be able to be converted into a useful item of the same type.
You’re not the first to suggest the idea of trading in intact lockpicks, which by themselves would be a rare drop, into a BL Key. Its not a bad suggestion. Yet I still think an intact lockpick is an item unto itself and should serve a function. * shrugs *
I don’t understand the level of RNG hatred here. Is it not true that…
A chance at opening a BL chest > No chance at opening a BL chest
(outside the use of Black Lion keys)
If it would upset some people so much that they’d hate to even try, they could just sell them to a merchant like a junk item then?
