ye so lame that we get free content to keep us going in between expansions instead of waiting ~2 years without getting anything.

/sarcasm

Now take that same mentality and apply it to your favorite tv show. Why should a network give you the final season for free? It should go direct to DVD on a per episode basis for $20 a pop! Best way to milk your loyal fans.

maybe they should begin to place commercials in the game to earn money, or a subscription like pay-tv

Will specialisations backfire?

He explicitly claimed they were not meant to be a subclass to add extra customization, but rather a niche tool you swap into under specific circumstances.
Like a Thief taking Smoke Screen against a heavily ranged boss.

But that is how it’s going to work, you can swap the specialisations out when you’re not in combat. Say you play a ranger, having terrible condition cleanse, if you’ve been fighting condition heavy opponents, you can leave combat and swap your specialisation to Druid which could theoretically have better condition cleanse so you can better combat that type of attack. It won’t give you extras per se, more like giving you a different way to fight.

thx, thats exactly the point

lions arch would be the only possible thing to add something new till the release of the expansion

it’s not the only thing, you know…

i said the possibility of something new sab will be the return of something existing with a new level (maybe)

and LA would be redoing an existing city for the third time :P

but it would be a new event, or did you rebuild something destroyed in gw2 in the past? :P and i’m pretty sure they would not be so lazy to rebuild it to the exact copy of the existing la

i’m pretty sure this is the third time lion’s arch is being repaired. first the lion statue, then the lighthouse, and now this :P

but in nothing of this the players were involved, it just happened. so it would be a new event and new content. sab is not

you can switch specializations out of combat, so basically limiting your gameplay is not possible. what they do is they give you an additional alternative to react on special circumstances. a specialization will not be a subclass, its an addition to play your existing class.

my bet is the rebuilding of lions arch before the expansion

As nice as that would be, lore wise it wouldn’t work since they’ve stated that the expansion is set hours after the finale of season 2.

and because of that lions arch would be the only possible thing to add something new till the release of the expansion (maybe for the next 7+ month). its not connected to the story and timeline of living story 2 in a meaningful way, it would be a seperate event like wintersday or the bazaar. additional they could do it with little effort, for example collecting mats for rebuilding, a little like collecting the tokens for the election in cutthroat politics and they could stretch it over weeks.

For you maybe. If we count feature packs ‘anticipation’ moments, Anet sometimes gave us no living story (at all) for 2,5 months. If we remove ‘event’ living stories from the list (like gold pavilion, wintersday, halloween, wvw season), then it has been 4 months or more we didn’t get living story ‘episodes’.

Given the expansion hype is there now and sticky, I think Anet wouldn’t mind risking a 5 month period downtime. They will however probably add some mini living stories. Perhaps the Ls team will keep us busy with a stand alone LS that doens’t impact mordremoth. After all LS is seperate team. Maybe SAB will see it’s comeback.

Launch, feature pack, all were released near augustus. It’s a date Anet likes.

my bet is the rebuilding of lions arch before the expansion

"No-grind philosophy"

BammBamm.6719

Equipping yourself in this game to be competitive has no grind. You don’t need BiS gear or Ascended to complete any of the content or compete in WvW. This is what I believe Anet is saying.

This has always been my take on the “no grind”, debate in this game.

No place in the game requires anything beyond EXOTIC equipment (really you can do it all with RARE gear). (EDIT: Ok, you need Ascended in some form for Fractals) The number of methods to obtain these tier of equipment is quite wide and requires NO GRIND at all.

Ascended and Legendary gear is completely optional (sans mid to high level Fractals) despite what some players want to claim.

basically you can experience every fractal without any resistance. so even for this exotic is enough.

Is the NPE worth no new races?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I really don’t understand this infatuation with new races. You do realize that one new class is worth an infinite number of cosmetic-only races, right?

Different things have different value to different people.

I mean, it’s not a difficult concept to grasp that people are different and want/like different things. Are we all suppose to value things the same? People don’t even value money the same, which is probably the most controversially controlled system of value.

its not a matter of personal value, its a matter of production cost and benefits for the game.

i really dont get what people expect from HoT

-new race
a new race would mean a new town, a new personal story segment and an overhaul for every armorpiece in the game (at least for tengu or kodan). and what you get for this? a new experience in personal story till level 20 and a few race elites. nothing else would change. but a new profession and the new specialization add so much more for the whole gameplay with much lesser effort.
and for the people that like to compare gw1 and gw2, gw1 had ONE kittening race

-regions/maps
you complain about numbers and not about content. it doesnt matter if a gw1 expansion had 10 more maps, what matters is the content of it. you can have one big map with 3 levels and still more content than 10 maps somewhere else. and no its not a new continent and its logical because there are things to be done here first.

-mastery
masteries are a clever way to add contentblockers (and hell contentblockers are necessary for mmo players or you will have a week after release the same complains about not to know what to do as after release from gw2). its not the stupid “your equip is to bad” kind of blocker, its a kind of blocker that fits in the story and char development.

-wvw
yeah they could add 10 maps with the same boring mechanics and people would praise it (and it would be advertised much better). but no, they add one new map and overhaul the existing ones with new mechanics to change the often boring and repetitive gameplay. thats the best what they could do

-skills
you get one new class, at least 8 new specialisations, maybe new weapons for existing classes, skills from mastery. when you do the math you will be close for 100 new skills for sure.

-pvp
yeah sure, they add a new mode and support it with only one map for sure. some people really just WANNA hate

everything they do with this expansion were wishes of the players. but you keep complaining about to late, to less, and not adding really everything what was wished. hell your lifes must be so miserable and dark when you cant even see now the light, when you are unable to be happy about good things and unable to ignore some minor bad things, i really feel sorry for you guys.

Arenanet is not Blizzard who is the only company that has the resources to add a new class and a new race and a new area for it and new skills and new stories and another area besides that in one expansion. It sucks but when you are small you do small things.

As a matter of fact ANet was not only capable of adding new zones to the game but it used to be able to add whole new continents with every GW1 expansion. Elona and Cantha were huge while still providing access to a bunch of new skills, two new professions for every campaign (four in total), vast number of new PvP modes (Fort Aspenwood) and elite dungeons etc. etc.

So you see ANet used to be way above everything Blizzard ever did. What happened, well… I don’t think that’s something we will ever find out.

what happened is the future. more details = more work. adding movement in the height = more work. no more instanced gameplay and a real mmo = more work. scaling events instead of static quests = more work. etc etc etc

And that’s what MMO devs want, to keep you playing. So yea, it is possible, they just won’t do it.

Which, ironically, came from the days of P2P games. Without that model, having players coming and going as new (paid) content is released could work. But developers are too used to the old mentality, and grind is just too easy to make, that grind is what we get.

not only the devs fault, the mindset of many players too. people think a mmo have to keep them busy over thousands of hours and that doesnt work without timesink through grind. look what happens after every living story update, complains about just a few hours content.
never felt forced to grind in gw2, never found content hidden behind grind. the grind is in the head of the players

I see BammBamm, thanks for the tips! So I could convert gold in-game to get these extra bank spaces and inventory slots? I got the deluxe edition. Is there a lot of content to get through by buying it or whatever?

no not a lot. it works this way, when you log in while a living story chapter is active you get it for free and can replay it when you want. if you missed it you have to buy the chapter for 200(?) gems each to unlock it. living story develops the changing world and gives background information about it, new enemies arise, lorestuff etc a living story chapter is between one and three hours of instanced content. there can be things changed by the living story in the open world and that is avaiable for everybody for free (f.e. new events or new maps). the chapters of the living story are for max level chars.

Wow, thank you all for the quick responses! I’ll be playing the game with a totally different mindset from my past experience in WoW. I played it for about 7 years on and off so this will be refreshing!

thats a good attitude. you can see gw2 as a mmo for players that dont like mmos or are bored of them.

oh and be prepared to invest a few bucks in the game (shouldnt be a big deal after 7 years of subscription), there are a few quality of life features that are totally worth it (for example enhancing bank space and inventory) or a bit of content that shows you what is happening after the main story and prepares you for the addon (living story 2 chapters). theoretically you can buy all of this with ingame gold, but because the game is 2 years old there is a lot of gold in the game you would have to grind A LOT of gold to effort these things.

first: get rid of the idea of endgame content^^ you have to play for the sake of playing the game and not reaching predetemined goals. the game is the most fun if you dont play “effectiv” and just do what you want to do.

second: for leveling the best way is to complete maps to 100%. after a while you have to do special tasks to unlock trait abilities, try level your crafting skills while leveling (the best equip can be crafted)

third: after leveling you have to make your own goals. a good thing is to have a look at the wardrobe, choose the equip you like and look how you get it, another goal would be to master crafting, play all dungeon paths, world vs world pvp, pvp, discover the whole world etc etc.

dont forget, you (have to) make your endgame by yourself. look for a nice relaxed guild which are doing guildmissions regularly will help to find goals and keep you busy

wrong thinking, they shouldnt balance bosses for people which only use certain weapons.

Is the maize balm rat farm an exploit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BammBamm.6719

BammBamm.6719

In a player driven economy, the demand of an item surpassing the supply generated by the playerbase will increase the value of it. While there are some items in these bags that are not based around cosmetics (the low drop rate of T6 mats), the price of these bags is directly relative to the cosmetic value that is being placed on them. While currently profitable, that profit is derived directly from other players and their willingness to play a higher price. In essence, this is a transfer of wealth not wealth generation.

As far as this specific spawn of ambients is concerned, it’s defiantly one of the faster ones to farm. As long as the playerbase is willing to pay for that item, and the demand remains higher than the supply, it will be profitable. This is not an exploit, it’s the playerbase saying “thank you for farming this, because we didn’t want to”.

so now i understand why there is no dhuum in gw2 sacrifice every fairplay and loot balance for the greater good of economy and wonder why the community became a really toxic one. extreme farming, dont play as intended but effectiv as possible, skipping as much as possible, more more more is anets vision of the next step of mmos. maybe you should give us loot at the log in, so you are not forced to develop content and we not to play the game. hail the economy

Similarities between GW2 and GW1

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BammBamm.6719

BammBamm.6719

I hope you realize that Eye of the North was supposed to be the prequel to GW2. Primordus was introduced to show what you would be doing in GW2 = hunting the Elder Dragons. That was not stealing, it was paving the way as an introduction to GW2. Get your facts straight.

I guess you missed the point of repeating the same story over and over again.
They can have 2567 Dragons in GW2 announced by GW1.
I really don’t care.
The sad thing is the story repeating.

Obviously not a fan of fantasy or science fiction or you’d know this. There are only so many plots. That’s it.

So we knew there were six elder dragons. We knew they were awakening. Logic would then dictate that we have to kill six elder dragons.

It’s not much different from most fantasy and science fiction. The difference is we also had some some plots here that are interesting, including the much maligned Scarlet. The Zephyrites and their connection to Glint. There’s been a lot of side stuff that’s pretty interesting, down to the ley lines.

Way to trivialize a plot and try to say that it’s copied from Guild Wars 1. In fact, the only dragons I remember facing in Guild Wars 1 were Glint, who was an allie, and the Kunnevang who was an ally.

Almost every plot can be boiled down to one of seven things (some people claim 14). There are more than 14 games, hence plots have to get reused.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Basic_Plots

Well GW1 had tons of Dragons around and still had descent plots without them.
-Rurik was entertaining because it led to an epic journey.
-Shiro wasn’t really the bad guys he was just influenced by the crystal ball lady. Also connected to a journey.
-Abadon was my least favorite but mostly because i didn’t like the nightmare lands.
The story itself was enjoyable.
In all these story i couldn’t find a single “let’s get a group”, “they don’t want to”,
“we make them”, “group defeats” cliche stuff

Shiro Tagachi is pretty mean and evil.
We need help. What about them Kurzicks and Luxons? They’re pretty powerful.
But they hate each other :o
Oh, let’s help them and get them to work together.
Now we’re all friendly, let’s go kill Shiro.

Oh noes! Varesh beat the Sunspears and is awaking Abaddon!
We need help. What about them Vabbians? They might be useful.
But they’re lazy and complacent.
Let’s show them the error of their ways and get them to help us.
Oh look! That enemy general and those centaurs. They want to help us too? Sweet.
Now we’re all friendly, let’s go re-imprison Abaddon.

Yeah… none of that ever happened…

Well all of that is by miles better than:

-Text Box Queen Jennah:
What about my people ???
Text Box you:
But Dragons are bad
Text Box Jennah:
Thats true, lets fight them

-Text Box Norn Guy
“We have to much to do with Svanir’s guys
Text Box You:
“But Dragons are bad”
Text Box Norn Guy:
Right, let’s fight them
ect.etc. ….

wow…………….. epic gaming experience

Do you really compare that to Rurik, Shiro and Abadon ????
And i guess we ignore that Luxon and Kurzick was a story about their sacred items…

congratulations, you found the worst part in LS2 but it was so bad i have to grin a bit (and the rest of the story is way better)

Why improvements for vets trumps new players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s simple.

The veterans, with thousands of hours on their accounts, are your good will ambassadors. If we are happy with the game, we will spread joy to the new players, and we’ll continue to stick around in game.

You know what else we do?

We help the new players learn the game in a way that is much more rewarding than a more spoon fed leveling process.

Challenge is an important part of the reward process.

Meeting people is what an MMO is all about.

I am absolutely certain that the time I spend sharing tips and tricks, in a friendly and supportive way, is golden for retention.

Now, that said, I do like hunting for traits, it makes the process more interesting and doesn’t align with “spoon feeding”

Still love the game… thanks for all the efforts you are putting in. I know you mean well.
