Thief main here. If you play thief in ranked, get on the other team. I know exactly what odds this class is against with the current meta. While its not as bad as last season (NOTHING could be that bad), it is still foolish, selfish, and arrogant to roll thief in ranked unless you are in a premade that is OK with it.
It is NOT a class to solo with as pugs will often not know how to play with a thief and dealing with aspects such as dealing with an outnumbered team fight while you decap.

IMO Resistance is just stripped too easy now. I would rather rely on Glint heal + more power damage against a necro than conditions (which will be transferred back) and resistance.

Seriously, if even for just a week event. Watch the flood of people as this game mode becomes playable again. Yesterday, I tried to do guild missions on a desert BL, and it is hilarious how long it can take to go from Point A to Point B because of all the STUPID and CONFUSING vertical paths designed. Each BL is literally bigger than EBG in terms of walkable space.
I’m amazed that this idiotic design even made it to production, even more that we’re still forced to “play” EotM part 2 as our BLs. “Play” as in “players completely ignore the BLs, and as a result EBG has been a crowded hot mess for months.”
Edit: And this is a solution that would cost NOTHING. You literally have the asset of Alpine Borderlands parked for no reason other than force feeding Desert BL to us. Did an executive’s spouse design that kitten Desert BL or something? Is that why you won’t even give us the FREE fix of the old BLs back? Because it has been long enough that its safe to say: Players and player adoption is not the problem. kittenty map design and lack of communication is.

You’re all missing my point. I will be the first to admit that it was a good move and I plain missed it. I’m not running a full zerker build, I have 2450 armor which isn’t max but it isn’t paper either. My point is once a week a thief will come in and moan about how op necros are. When you’re hitting for 14k with a single hit you have nothing to complain about.
If you want to use this edge case to represent the state of thief fine. Then let’s consider ENTIRE EotM zergs being wiped by a single wall of fear. You see how idiotic this is?

1. Backstab has not been changed in a long time, calling for a nerf to it now in the ‘meh’ state thief has been for like 8 months makes everyone question your skill and setup.
2. This is only possible in a situation where the thief is full glass and sacrificed all defenses to burst down someone else full glass. Solution: add some toughness, silly.
3. Repeating what others have said, but WvW is an imbalanced place. I get hit with 15k AoE Gunflames from 1200 with quickness all the time. This game is balanced on the PvP mode, and anything ridiculous that happens in WvW is swept under the rug.

S/D does fine damage. It’s just got weird casting time issues on its damage and a crappy 4’th slot ability.

Agree. When steal is down, S/D is hard to burst with vs a good player because of the predictable nature of FS LS compared to D/P which can burst easier without any cooldowns and only initiative.

It just seems to me you dont really have dmg on him as s/d like on d/p and I know d/p does more dmg but the gap in dmg is not like when I play for example.
It’s a Scrapper. My backstab normally hits 8 to 9k on thieves. On him without protection we see 5k in the video. My 2k crits on sword are easily 4k on thieves. I hit 5-6k larc strikes on thieves typically. I don’t think there gap in damage shown in the video is atypical for any thief at all. I wasn’t even hitting that hard on dagger, highest auto I saw was 2.4k.
Other sources of extra damage on D/P is more consistent burst with backstab vs LS, and bound instead of dash. To be fair, I mostly run that S/D build in groups for giggles and its uncatchable. I probably would have switched to bound if I knew how the fight would go.

- So we had threads crying for thief nerfs for 3 years.
- Thieves got gradually reduced to junk tier (mostly because not a single dev has any experience with the class besides Ruby spamming random spells on passive golems in HotM).
- So we had threads upon threads asking to remove thieves from ranked/delete the class because it supposedly caused loses during season 1 not to mention that everyone and their mother was consistently harassing thieves in matches calling them names, telling them to reroll, uninstall, kill themself while customer support did absolutely nothing about such player griefing.
- Thieves got slight buff after season 1 (which still don’t put them anywhere close to certain elites/classes…cough scrappers… cough druid….). Thief is still only class that has to run from most 1v1.
- Now we have people like OP crying for thief nerfs.There is just not enough facepalms for this.

An increase to autoattack is an increase to thief burst as well as sustain. The difference between it taking two hits or three from the AA after backstab to down someone is win or lose. There’s an enormous difference between “low hp with heal skill available” and “downed”. The autoattack buff pushed thief damage over that threshold in many situations.
Whether or not a thief can do something defensive during autoattack is irrelevant when the next autoattack that lands will end the fight. A good thief will cover the auto with a blind anyway.

Idk why you don’t understand that thief cannot rely solely on stealth attacks and initiative consuming skills for damage anymore. We have a global CD that affects our weapon sets equally no matter if we swap. Prepatch every class would laugh in my face as I would hit 1k AAs that crit. If that extra 1k every 3 seconds in melee is downing you that many times, idk what to say.
Source: thief main that has almost zero problems with thieves on core Mesmer.

Seriously, theres not a problem with a thief having some sustained damage to use when they’re out of initiative. Again, there are higher AA’s on other classes, go complain on their forums.
Show us the OP autoattacks of other professions, please.
Keep in mind that when you’re deciding which ones are OP, that other classes do not have backstab burst damage which counts toward total DPS. Thief auto should be the weakest auto in the game to allow for thief burst to be the highest in the game. That is balance.

A ranger who complains about AA of a thief – really makes sense as rangers absolutely have no weapons like a LB or ever evading GS and S/D to evade auto attacks.

If you don’t know how to avoid melee auto attack, then I’m not equipped to deal with that. Kiting from melee in this game is as easy as moving a step to the left and then keep going. Thieves don’t have super speed and limited quickness.

Forward run speed is higher than strafing speed. Quickness doesn’t even affect run speed. Thief gets super speed (equivalent) from Hidden Thief while stealthed (formerly an effect from Acrobatics, was changed in patch).

And your last point, so just because a thief is pressured he shouldn’t be able to do damage without wasting defensive options like initiative? This is not sustainable. We don’t get initiative back on swap, and don’t even go there with Quick Pockets. We can’t just swap weapons and spam cooldowns like other classes. We don’t have passive AoEs that do damage while we go do something else, we don’t have good reliable invulns, we don’t have offensive cooldowns to swap to and spam. All we have is an autoattacks buff to keep up with everyone else, but I guess that’s too much to ask for.

You cannot walk away from warrior autoattack. You cannot walk away from any melee attack that allows the attacker to continue moving during the animation, because they can simply keep walking toward you while you walk away.

Backstab is fine. This is about auto attack.
This is about MELEE auto attack. That you can walk out of or counterpressure since the thief can’t do anything defensive while auto attacking. I still have zero problems on thief even on Mesmer. Because I know how to prevent myself from being hit by MELEE auto attack. That you can walk out of. Or counterpressure against.
With all the passives and AoEs in this game (btw that thief has minimal access to), a MELEE auto attack buff should be the last of your complaints. Sorry but if you’re letting someone dagger you in the face, you deserve big damage. Bigger than vs an AoE or passive attack. Passive like 10k ranger pet attacks.
No ranger pet hits passively for 10k damage. A remorseless tiger on a stupidly squishy target with double signet buff might get that high on an F2 active pounce, if the ranger dumps all cooldowns in a one trick pony spec into one shamefully obvious attack that you can literally walk away from because of pet AI problems.
You cannot “walk” away from a thief. Since when are thieves rooted during melee autoattack like certain other leather-wearing professions and their pets? They are completely free to pursue you with more mobility than any other profession in the game. The only counter to a thief is pressure, and a good thief will handle the pressure by spending initiative. Pre-patch a thief with a weak auto and no initiative was no longer a serious threat. Post-patch a pressured thief is far more adept at killing you.

Either WvW ranks (very slow) or PVE hero points (faster but not fun for all). I was a little kittened when I found out I paid for HoT and Anet essentially said I have to play their kitten expansion to enjoy the content outside of PVE.
On the plus side, as you get masteries, each successive elite spec for your other toons gets faster and easier. You need masteries for a lot of the HP in HoT zones, which by the way are worth 10x more than HP in other maps.

Backstab is fine. This is about auto attack.
This is about MELEE auto attack. That you can walk out of or counterpressure since the thief can’t do anything defensive while auto attacking. I still have zero problems on thief even on Mesmer. Because I know how to prevent myself from being hit by MELEE auto attack. That you can walk out of. Or counterpressure against.
With all the passives and AoEs in this game (btw that thief has minimal access to), a MELEE auto attack buff should be the last of your complaints. Sorry but if you’re letting someone dagger you in the face, you deserve big damage. Bigger than vs an AoE or passive attack. Passive like 10k ranger pet attacks.

We won’t get SoloQ back. Fine. But you can’t just let it slide how unenjoyable matches vs premade teams are.
If we are going to have 1 queue for everyone, either SoloQers get an automatic dip in MMR or premades get an automatic bump up in MMR. It does not have to be a major difference, it can be fine tuned to see how much is enough, but I think something to level the playing field in this area is needed. Without some kind of compromise to SoloQers, PVP loses credibility and appears to rewards veterans stacking vs soloers and newcomers. PVP, especially a mode like Conquest, is impacted HEAVILY by tools like Teamspeak for VASTLY better team communication than chat.

Oh yeah..i completely forgot that riposting shadows cost next to 0 energy and that we swap to new legend with 100% energy. Keep acting like revs has everything for free and always available. Not. And riposting shadows wont let me get away from mobile class btw. the only way i can escape from fight is when i am not focused.
I believe his point was more so that the impacting cost of revenant utilities/skills are far less than the cost of thief utilities/skills.
1. Riposting Shadows = essentially soft CC immunity while in shiro and has way less of a CD than anything on thief with those effects. AND returns 50 endurance. New acro thief LOL
2. Anything gets focused, a thief has a life span of about .5 seconds when focused if you wanna trade.
3. At least revs swap with the baseline amount of energy available. I’d say thats pretty free compared to what thieves get with intiative.

No one implied that, you just need to learn to play rofl.
Between timing dodges (which give STABILITY), sig of energy and Riposting Shadows, you should have absolutely no problem getting the hell away from a fight. If you’re lucky, there’s another fight the next node over and you can even Phase Traversal away. In WvW is where it gets problematic escaping, but off topic.

On the player side, there is rampant dissatisfaction. The player base nearly unanimously would rather have Alpine back and Desert gone, as is the case since HoT release to date. As a result, many players have quit to the point that several previously full servers are now all open. Meanwhile, since players sticking around either hate the new maps or find them too empty to use, they have all crowded to EBG and create server lag (a problem with this game mode that goes farther than maps and more about infrastructure quality). That’s right, those of us left can barely play in slideshow mode half the time, even when roaming away from blobs.
On top of all this, the automatic nature of WvW actions since HoT has diminished the value of individual player participation. Anet literally diminished player percepted importance, viable playing space, and service reliability all at once, all to defend a broken map that was wrongly designed to begin with.
Get a team capable of better extracting requirements and preferences from end users, admit you don’t care about what users think due to ego, or end the mode already so your users that play solely for WvW can log out permanently.

Sometimes I am the troll and just quit, seeing that my team mates from solo queue are St- id.
Except you are ruining the experience for other people. Which Anet should not be okay with. Go hot join if you feel like you should be able to quit at any time, scrub.
