I actually like some of the ideas I have seen about getting rid of servers and making WvW a more Guild/alliance style game. I think that would fix a large part of the problem we are having with server issues and population balance.

Continuing this thread in that direction will just get the thread closed. Has been suggested many times, its not happening. Still need a realistic solution to the hibernators though.

What different does it make when you too are just merely revitalising an idea that already suggested?

Go ahead and link me threads. If they haven’t closed, and the problem has clearly not been solved, then do I have to explain how it’s different?

How often are they evaluated? I’ve been trying to transfer for weeks now and nothing is working

I feel like the only server that should be truly ranked full, is BG. Everything else should be open.

Then JQ and Mag would get flooded with transfers until they were as big as BG. None of the top 6 servers should be opened, they can be linked to make them competitive in tier 1/2 (other than with BG obviously since they got stacked so much not even linked servers can compete).

At this point I’d be willing to argue that if its too big for a link it should be broken up into more servers..

Just go the free market approach and let the queue times deter people from transferring. Less management too.

Completely agree. Higher queue times -> unhappy guilds -> natural transfers.

They’re not taking up a slot if they’re gone, since they’re not counted towards the activity check which dictates if a server opens or not, not how many are actually on the server.

IF population is counted that way still.

No. GW2 was advertised as a game geared equally towards hardcore players and casual players. Lots of my WvW guildmates are casual players and will go play something else for a few months, then return and enjoy WvW for a while, rinse repeat. This would not be fair to them. And if you don’t like playing against stacked servers, just transfer off of the stacked one you are most likely on (in order to be facing the others) and to a lower tier. The fights are better outside T1, the lag is less prevalent outside T1, and from what I’ve seen, the individual player skill is far better outside of T1.

I would agree, but to many posters here, BG is the devil incarnate. Part of their success is getting guilds to cover certain time zones. They would organize a hibernation until the server opened, then have the guild transfer in. This was a way to reduce it.

Personally, I don’t care if T-1 stays like it is. People blame BG for most of the population issues.

I am happy playing with my guild regardless of where. We will continue to havoc vs small/large servers, and continue to be steamrolled by blobs that we pull to other maps so our server can be successful.

But people need to stop using a single server as the reason why they can’t have fun or can’t be successful.

People alter their play to avoid being matched against BG, because BG is simply not fun to play against. They roll in giant zergballs nearly around the clock. They “roam” in groups of 8-10, and their “havoc” groups are 15+. When YB is matched with BG I play just long enough to max my tickets, and then go farm.

They have stockpiled players throughout their history, and have a vast playerbase that no other server can match. The other issue is the linking does not take into account timezones or coverage, and so very often you will get two or more strong NA servers linked against BG, which does absolutely NOTHING to counter BGs timezone advantages, and with map caps in place the NA advantage cannot be used decisively.

Long story short. BG is the last true T1 server. It has retained most of its identity through the ups and downs of the game. It’s inability to adapt to the new reality is causing other servers to flounder, and eventually that will catch up to BG.

Interesting perspective, albeit somewhat inaccurate. BG is indeed the last true T1 server, although JQ comes very close; they’re probably one guild away from being on even footing.

BG was really forged during the 2v1 back in Seasons. There is a lot of pride there and a core group of Militia and Guilds that will likely never leave. We do have guilds come and go, but the core remains the same.

BG certainly doesn’t have “giant zergballs nearly around the clock”.

For coverage, BG queues all maps on reset, most maps on Saturday, and EBG (pugs) plus maybe one other map most of the week during NA prime.

During off hours there is usually one typemander float squad that bounces around maps defending, and no maps are queued. Probably 10-20 people. I know because I often log in during the day and NEVER see a map queued, and TS is usually dead. This coverage in and of itself isn’t the issue, as it is usually counterbalanced by equal sized opponents. Nothing like the coverage we had a few years ago.

So your perceptions may be a bit skewed, just like many people in our NA squads always think we’re outnumbered 2-1 in fights. In fact, many BG commanders complain that they can’t get 30 people in squad, yet the map is queued with green dots doing who knows what.

What may be the real issue of late is that BG has a very sizable PVE population. As in really huge group of PUGS that have now decided that they want the new WvW shiny. So they log in and bounce around maps to keep their pips up. Usually an unorganized group about the size of a traditional havok squad. When I roam on my thief to cap camps I almost always see 3 or 4 BG’ers already there just waiting for the timer to expire.

While this may seem like a concerted effort by BG to stack, it’s probably really just a bunch of PVE’ers tying to keep up their pips to get their latest shiny. Not sure why this is unique to BG, but it may be that our already sizable WvW population which was #1 prior to the updates (although nowhere near what it was a couple years ago), combined with the new people entering WvW, has tipped the balance.

I was on BG for over 2 years, this guy nailed what I saw there perfectly. BG is just a kitten ton of hibernators and casuals that peek in WvW when news or updates arrive.

Plus no one remembers when BG is losing…we were pretty consistently getting 3rd place for like 6 months a while ago? All you ever hear is BG stacking like winning even has any good rewards to it.

Because it’s more expensive to move more people? Because they are worried they won’t get back to BG (my situation)?

People take breaks from the game for various reasons, and once they return, it would be pretty annyoing to find you can not play with your guild in your own server anymore.

Personally I do not see any reason people would want to transfer into full server since the time you spend waiting in queue is not worth the potential benefits. But if someone is really very determined, and manages to get into full server eventually, let them.

If I don’t log in for 2 months, I miss a chunk of living story and all that it entails (new gear? new stats? new food? new trinkets? wouldn’t know I don’t have access!).

Why isn’t WvW this way? Living story is something that does not need a resource to give to players and has this strict use it or lose it strategy, meanwhile WvW server spots are a finite resource and can be kept indefinitely by playing 1 mintue of WvW every month.

There are limited WvW spots per server. Use it or lose it.

Now, them not logging in does not take up a space nor count towards full status, BUT it does allow them to hibernate and jump in later causing a server to be greatly over stacked compared to other servers.

If they log in once a month into a WvW map they count towards the full status I believe. Although I think it was changed to count server player hours instead?

Wouldn’t it be nice to get communication from ArenaNet on this issue that affects many WvW players and would result in more transfer $$$ flowing if they solve it.

This would cause a LOT of healthier population movement from “stacked” servers that have large numbers of low turnout players. I know for a fact that Blackgate is mostly hibergaters that come to play when WvW “news” arrives, then PvE the rest of the year.

To your point about getting into a full server if you’re determined enough, how determined is reasonably determined? Some of us have been trying to autoclick transfers into full servers for weeks or even months? Is this reasonable??

I’m not saying that is where the OP wants to go, but its the way the population is shifting.

It actually is where I want to go. The population happens to be shifting this way, but I just want to play with my friends lol…

I’d be OK lifting all server transfer limits and letting the population naturally balance out through higher queue times. I would rather face possible 100 man queues (been there done that for a few months, was like only on reset night…) than just never being able to transfer to Blackgate.

BG is probably the most populated server at the moment.

Given that we have many full servers who are clearly below BG’s level of population. I don’t see it magically open in near future.

And it shouldn’t open for a while.

I would also like the accounts that haven’t been active in WvW for more than 6 weeks to be put into a pool of non affiliated accounts which would require them to choose a new open server them next time they want to log into WvW. Would help reduce hibernation.

I second that. Having servers stay full because some PvE casual does dailies in WvW once a month is kitten.

Lack of variety in roaming roles

- The most potent and most-common small-scale classes aside from cases where things end up totally overpowered tend to be ones which are absolutely useless in zerg fights. When was the last time you saw a commander ask for rangers, thieves, or mesmers (outside of a veil/portal/blur bot)? They’re basically useless in big-scale encounters, unfortunately by design.

To give a little bit to the mesmer class here.
I’ve never been turned away from an organized group for playing a support chrono.

Boon sharing resistance is still pretty important, especially since everyone’s boons end up corrupted most of the time anyway.

Not to mention dropping gravity wells deep on a group’s back line can flat out stop small organized groups from standing a chance against your larger, less organized zerg.

That last sentence just lol. Bring Mesmer so your giant zerg can flatten a smaller zerg, gotcha.

If my havoc group sees duelers and we realize they are duelers, we’ll give them a wide berth. I’m not out to spoil anyone’s fun. But it is a war zone; sometimes spells will fly, mistakes will be made, and I expect everyone involved to realize dueling in a warzone isn’t … uh…. ‘safe’ seems like the wrong word.

No dueler has made a thread complaining about being killed as far as I can remember. There are many threads complaining about duelers just for existing however.

Can people just kittening stop making threads complaining about this? It’s a waste of time and energy. You’re not going to stop duelers. No one is overstepping their rights as per the ToS. Get over it.

On the other side of the coin, I will argue that you zergers destroy ping and lag all 4 maps constantly, hindering everyone’s ability to play. I can’t recall a dueling circle spiking my ping to 2k ever. Maybe zerging is a problem we should solve to improve combat quality all over WvW, add build diversity, and emphasize skill level in fights? But nah it’s the duelers.

Power rev and condi removal

I almost completely retired my revenant for solo and most roaming. Unless you have the party comp, its always an uphill battle as 90% of the solo roaming fights you face are either power thief or some condition build, both hard countering revenant. Revenant has to rely on allies to overcome those weaknesses, and when you’re pugging or solo it just doesn’t pan out great.

Since S/D thief was brought back last patch, I’ve switched mains back to that. Better tactics with the repeat engagements thanks to sword 2, better condition clear even without escapists absolution, less obvious and more flexible play style, more mobility, and boon rip.

Fun power roaming spec?

Druid – effective and durable if built well, strong 1v1 weak 1vX strong team support with heals and peels, flexible between support and DPS without tweaking traits, only stats and weapon sets.

Daredevil – best solo class. Strong 1v1 strong 1vX weak team support, you can only blast stealth for allies or gank the enemy pressuring your allies. Options between D/P Dash Pulm or D/P Staff Acro Bound. Pretty much the perfect roamer, either abuse stealth or Dash to survive, if you know how to play the build your enemy has equiped, regardless of class, a Daredevil has winning odds since it can kite and abuse openings with strong consistent burst and sustained damage.

Herald – one of the worst solo classes. Boons they share go to waste. Very high damage that provides counterplay to high durability builds, choices between hammer and sword/shield. High evade and block uptime, low condition cleanses. 1v1 and 1vX advantage almost entirely revolves around if your enemy is condition damage or not if you both have equal skill. Strong team support in terms of hard CC, enough damage to deny 2 revivers, offensive boon sharing, strong revive trait, and unique traits like Assassin’s Presence and Versed in Stone. As a solo roamer, you’ll have a bad time if you’re new, but in a small roaming party the Herald shines.

Stopped Caring About Tickets

I haven’t once checked how many tickets I have. There was a time where I felt compelled to WvW as much as possible for things like server pride and the war effort and, looking back, it wasn’t worth it. So when I saw something else that suggested I put in extra hours, I didn’t think twice about turning it down.

Also can we ever get a kitten patch that adds more than updates to score and rewards? Anet can go around saying they spent so much time on WvW. But we’re still playing the same game as 2 years ago, only the numbers and blinking screen text has changed. Give us some kittening balance while you’re at it.

Why do people think I died to a Oakheart lol… it clearly says it rally’s people, it doesn’t say it rallied me… It’s a bug that exist in the game which rally’s people if they kill the entangling vines. That’s it.

This has been an issue forever. Go down next to an oak heart, let it vine immobilize you and then kill the vine in downed state. You should rally unless they patched it.

Hammer Rev Damage Needs Nerf

I’ve got 2500 power before might, 83 crit chance and 237 crit damage. Even then, while running invocation and devastation with swift termination and elder force, I hit no more than 10k CoRs in a blob fight, usually 5k. If that’s OP then gunflame warrior is God mode.

Also I can take a little trick from thieves/druids whining on the forums, “power rev is a kitten roamer, all they can do in the WvW is Voltron blob, and you want to nerf them???”

I use Glint shiro, basically the PvP build on metabattle for traits weapons.

Durability runes are popular. I personally use Leadership for the extra clears. I also use cleansing sigil on my sword.

I don’t recommend wasting time with minus condition duration food, I felt no difference. Really just have to dodge or block everything and save your cleanses while you can. There’s also infuse light, staff 4, and some logic, like if a condition Mesmer bombs you with torment and confusion, you can mitigate the damage by waiting it out in shield 5 and not moving.

Personally I find pure Marauder to have kitten damage while still being glassy, so I’d rather mix stats since Marauder’s got too much h precision. My mix of stats gets me 228% crit damage, 85% crit chance with fury, 2.6k armor, 20k health, and 2500 power with no might. That’s with (if I remember correctly) zerk armor, Marauder weapons, cavalier rings, and rest of trinkets are Marauder. I use roasted cactus for food and furious sharpening stones for utility.

Going sword/shield and staff is the most fun to me, but substituting sword for hammer is often a good choice depending on the fight (usually more people = hammer better). I’d recommend using staff a lot, it gives 2 more clears and small heal, one of the lowest CD blocks in the game, and burst damage/CC with Surge of the Mist.

This is not a bug, they are behaving exactly as programmed and they are not hitting you through evades.

And we never said that they hit through evades. But you still get hit (after dodging) even though you evaded with UC because you were like 2 pixels off or some stupid kitten.

Come on, how is this not unintended behavior? One particular trait acts up when under very specific circumstances? You think a tester from Anet actually ran into this and was like “hey I wrote that requirement!”

I’m actually with Cynz on this one for once, this is very comparable to defending DHs pulling people into walls lol. Neither side did it on purpose (kinda like how I can dodge your shatter but they accidentally still hit me! outplayed, right?), but one side still gets kittened for what would 9/10 times under different circumstances (different dodge trait, different class) times be a solid play.

Hi everyone, thanks for the highly interesting topic – I am atm mainly playing my power rev as WvW solo roamer, since the patch it goes pretty well but heavy condi players are still a challenge so 1) any tips on how to fight necros and mesmers? I have tried a couple of times with hammer and combined to riposting shadows I can defeat some of them 2) when it comes to the rune I have actually chosen Rune of Lyssa "when you use an elite skill, convert up to 5 conditions into boons (CD: 45 secs), is this crazy compared to rune of leadership or durability? Not sure if this is a bug but it seems that Jade Winds does not work with this rune, has someone experienced the same?

Lyssa is an available and cheap alternative, but unfortunately the stats on them suck.

When you used Jade Winds, the rune effect might have been on CD, or you did not finish casting the skill.

The only issue i have with mes atm is that chrono allows AI run at light speed which results in them ignoring dodge even if you dodge into shatter making dodge obsolete in such scenario.

We’ve been over this many times, it’s not an issue born from superspeed on shatter it’s from the increased dodge range on UC. Even then with proper timing you don’t get hit by the shatter, it doesn’t make dodging obsolete it just means you need better timing.

Haha if the l2timing argument failed to defend acro staff and condi thieves from nerfs, I guess it’s totally viable for mesmers! Btw this is not only with UC, this also affects roll-away skills like withdraw and riposting shadows.

Remember when landing shatters was actually skillful and not just press your f buttons? Then again I also remember when thief’s best PvP DPS rotation wasn’t shadowshot autos. Games just kittened.

Mesmers one shotting people

Yes that that is why PvP will never be popular in GW2. Such huge burst builds just wreck the low-level game. As for counters the trend now is for one-shots to tag-team up and blow player after player away, irrespective of player skill etc. Players leave PvP faster than the one-shooters rank up, low-rank Qs get longer and long because of the low-pop of low-level players.

The solution is to regressively cap burst damage by rank. That way high burst / glass cannon would not be an option at low levels, and consequently more players would have the time to learn – rather that merely grab there profession one-shot build from a web page – and progress up ranks.

As is, broken, with no evidence of any learning whatsoever from the devs over the last four or so years. The only thing keeping PvP afloat are the quick dailies, sans these. PvP is wasted pixels.

I’m a revenant main. Revenant is a viable roamer, but you have to be extremely aware of your surroundings for stealth ganks, spec for maximum conditions clears (cleansing sigil and leadership), and dodge nearly every attack that you can. TBH, it is probably one of the hardest classes to roam with. Engi might be the only one harder because everyone just walks away from E-gun auto.

Revenant has the damage to roam, but the survivability is based on how well you can dodge/block attacks and outplay the enemy. 1vX is a major kitten because of how sword damage gets split, but in a small party revenant brings a lot of boons and damage.

If you’re playing sPvP then I can give you help. Boop’s advice is technically correct but not actually helpful. I’m NA and I’ll be on around 5:30pm east coast time.

Basically you need to know your matchups perfectly before engaging them, you have high sustain against power builds and low sustain against condi builds. Pick your 1v1s carefully, condi mes is a bad matchup for you.

So essentially learn the other classes so you can avoid getting hit lol. Totes different

Don’t get hit. No really, that’s all there is, other than Infuse Light. Dodge and block everything. You can put on Leadership runes for 2 extra clears every 45s and cleansing sigil, but the big thing is don’t get hit.

If I’m solo or small party roaming on rev, I’m most likely using sword. I’m open to hammer and have no problems stopping a fight and going out of combat for 5 seconds to swap if I feel hammer is better for that fight, but that usually comes hand in hand with fights getting fatter and turning into zerg fights. Hammer is handy when you can hide in a cloud of players, but the smaller the number on your side, the slower and more vulnerable that hammer looks. That said, it can work for roaming (I’ve found it great for chasing down thieves, use Impossible Odds on shiro with hammer auto lol 5k 5k 5k), I just really prefer the style of sword compared to hammer’s simple pew pew.

To prevent being disadvantaged at range I do a few things. I’ll swap to shiro and kite with LoS to build up energy for a phase traversal → burst. Remember that 4 sigil swap I mentioned? If you do it right every time, and have an energy sigil, that’s an extra dodge every 10s which is equivalent to a third dodge; abuse this

You’re right, revs can instantly use elite effects on runes just by upkeeping facet of chaos (Glint elite). Note that even if you don’t use chaotic release to put the facet on CD, you still get the rune effect CD so the next time you swap to Glint you won’t get the rune effect until the 45s CD is up. To help me with this, I often use chaotic release anyway even if to just give superspeed to allies; keeping the CDs synced is more valuable to me.

Another trick you might not be aware of, if you swap your legend first, then your weapon, you can get all 4 sigil swap effects. Example, I have energy sigil on sword, I swap legends and get the energy sigil effect. Immediately after, I swap my weapon to staff (which has a hydromancy sigil) and gain the swap effects of that weapon set.

Surging is decent but IMO loses out to durability and leadership in WvW. Random protection procs and condition clears are just more likely to save your life in WvW than shocking aura.

Don’t bother with celestial. I use a mix of zerk Marauder and cavalier for both roaming and zerging.

Another nice thing, you can easily turn any roaming power rev build into a zerging rev build by changing foods, putting on hammer instead of sword shield, swapping out shiro for mallyx, and maybe changing some traits/traitlines if you’re picky.

Are you talking about roaming guilds or 4-5 man teams consisting of cancer thiefs with engi /ranger support insta-downing solo people as they try to make their way back to the fight?

I tend to find those an annoyance and just avoid them, tell other people not to feed them and they will get bored and move.

Roaming guilds, on the other hand, are great. As long as they are not just running thiefs with support and actually want to engage other roaming guilds. Small scale fights are great fun.

? So it’s only a roaming guild if they’re not thieves lol. Totally makes sense.

As someone who plays neither warrior nor revenant. Dodging Warrior attacks is significantly easier than rev attacks.

Also Necro probably has bigger telegraphs, but most people forget necro is even a class these days.

Can’t tell if serious lol. Revenant has the most obvious rotation in the game. Being able to dodge attacks is different from knowing what attack is coming. Just because I don’t have the resources to dodge or block UA doesn’t mean it’s not the most obvious skill ever.

Necro has telegraphs? Where lol? From range in the back with the minions and Mesmer clones and other AoE graphic spam, I can totally see the corrupt boon being cast! Marks are like so obvious how does anyone get hit! /s

Invocation sword/shield staff revenant. It has a higher burst potential than thief (maybe not as high as Mesmer) without any stealth carry. The reliance on active evasion and blocks brings me back to old sword dagger thief.

Another thing is I really like the attitude you need on revenant when facing all the condi kitten in WvW (thanks dire and trailblazer!). You can hardly outright cleanse: you need to think of other ways to handle condis, whether it be infuse light, waiting out confusion and torment stacks using shield 5, etc.

And you need to play aggressive as hell which is the primary reason I love power revenant. Kill the kitten out of them or be killed, that’s how I play.

Interesting, I did not know one could enjoy Rev so much after the nerfs (you must be quite dedicated!). I’ve been thinking of taking up the class for a while now and I’d love to know how you feel it fairs against the other classes.

Funny enough, most of the big nerfs didn’t hit WvW Rev for the raoaming build, most of the nerfs only ht PvP for power Rev. Power Rev is still formidable in Roaming.

Yep you’re right. Equilibrium and SotM nerfs were the big ones that didn’t make it out of PvP. I think of it as levelling the playing field since most roamers are d/p thieves (my OG main!) or condition builds. They can pulm me 4k, burn me 5k a tick. But I’ll land a 6k legend swap and 8k SotM on them.

Wow, you seriously think DH traps and Headbutt did more damage than SotM before the nerf?

Too bad revs now have to play well to be effective, just like every profession should be. Eles were nerfed before you, but we’re doing just fine with our one viable spec, which can be difficult to play at times as well.

Point? Learn to play or reroll DH if you think it’s so godly compared to pre nerf rev.

My goodness, I’m so sick of revs complaining about nerfs. You were OP. Now you’re more balanced and have to play well. This isn’t a problem with revs being weak. It’s a problem with everything else being too OP.

Perfect example of people still salty about the time rev was viable lol

And to your point of rerolling, yes I have and am having far easier face rolls using DH thief ele and druid this season lol.

Because conditions totally haven’t changed since 4 years ago

Remove downstate then. Epi will be nerfed that way and gameplay improved
